erstes Soloalbum "Invaluable" über One Little Independent auf CD und LP. Die umtriebige
Londonerin war Teil der Supergroup B.E.D. gemeinsam mit Baxter Dury und Étienne de
Crécy und bildet mit ihrer Schwester Ursula die Polit-Punk-Band Skinny Girl Diet. Nun
erscheint ihr erstes Soloalbum, auf dem sie in Skinny-Girl-Diet-Riot-Grrrl-Manier
gesellschaftliche Themen wie Sucht, Paranoia und Kapitalismus in den Mittelpunkt stellt.
Es vereint zwei in diesem Jahr digital erschienenen EPs voller
Downtempo-Electronic-Art-Pop mit Trip-Hop-Einflüssen und einem Medley aus
berauschenden Synthesizern, durchdrungen von Dancefloor-Beats.
Das Album existiert im Raum zwischen Fantasie und Realität. Delilah Holliday spricht über
Themen wie Wachstum, Heimat und Wurzeln, aber auch strukturelle Ungleichheiten und
Armut. Vor allem aber geht es um Selbstakzeptanz und Selbstliebe. Zwischen industriellen
Clubhymnen und atmosphärisch produzierten Momenten der Euphorie mischt Delilah
glitchige Elektronik mit knackigen Rhythmen, die gemeinsam mit dem Komponisten
Raphael Ninot geschrieben und produziert wurden.

The evolution of Swampmeat Family Band continues apace. When the Birmingham outfit released
their incendiary third album, Muck, three years ago, it marked the culmination of the kind of vision that
frontman Dan Finnemore had always had for them; having returned from the U.S. after a spell as a key
member of Philadelphia rockers Low Cut Connie, he was burning with ideas and inspiration,
channeling a renewed creative energy into a new-look version of the garage band he’d formed, as
simply Swampmeat, with drummer T-Bird Jones in 2006. Muck certainly felt like a family affair, one
that saw the group expand to a five-piece and broaden their musical palette, boldening their bolshier
side with brass, lending their forays into country some authenticity with the addition of pedal steel and,
by welcoming vocalist Joni Coyne into the fold, providing Finnemore with a new foil. The new
accoutrements came together to form the basis of Swampmeat 2.0, a slicker, sharper band anchored
by Finnemore’s handsome arrangements and melodic sensibilities. Polish Your Old Halo continues
Finnemore’s hot vein of songwriting form with Muck and capitalises upon that album’s creative
momentum, without being afraid to try new things and remove old ones; the brass and strings that
made it on to Muck have been left to one side, propelling Finnemore’s writing to the fore. The
freewheeling blues rock that came to define their last album is still alive and well. But there’s also
progression, something particularly evident in the album’s bookends; ‘Do It All’ brings the curtain up
with juddering, synth-led punk energy, while closer ‘Plant Your Feet Correctly’ is a swooning acoustic
cut, initially envisioned as having a string section but now presented in vulnerable, bare-bones fashion.

Die Bostoner Post-Metaller MORNE, die seit kurzem bei Metal Blade Records unter Vertrag stehen, werden am 3. November ihr gewaltiges Album Engraved With Pain veröffentlichen. Engraved With Pain ist ein Moment des düsteren Triumphs, der sowohl in Celtic Frost als auch in Ministry verwurzelt ist, aber dennoch irgendwie von den Göttern Black Sabbath inspiriert wurde und für niemanden so sehr charakteristisch ist wie für sie selbst.

Adroit jazz guitar, prog rock fantasia, and Japanese environmental music all rest comfortably behind Leo Takami's Next Door. The follow up to the acclaimed Felis Catus & Silence, Next Door finds Takami ruminating on passages—of time, seasons, consciousness. Through music, Leo contemplates daily events and finds beauty in ordinary moments. He also seems to be questioning the value of being stuck in the world, allowing his mind to wander towards something beyond it. His music is earnest, deeply personal and introspective, and is sort of akin to Rousseau’s Reveries of the Solitary Walker or Kenji Miyazawa’s Night on the Galactic Railroad. On “As If Listening” Takami takes inspiration from a Van Gogh art show organized chronologically, articulating the sense of “enlightened resignation” that is intrinsic in the act of creativity. “Beyond” is a dream of otherworldly nostalgia, a watercolor of past lives. His music is a hazy cinema of memory, the soundtrack to a cherished memory that may have never really happened, but still radiates in the mind like the sun on an unusually warm winter day.

The latest album release by acclaimed Norwegian band Erlend Apneseth Trio is made in collaboration with renowned experimental composer and vocalist Maja Ratkje. Their impromptu concert together in 2022 was a glorious kick-off for a five-day festival and was luckily put on tape. After reworking and reimagining the recorded material with their steady collaborator Jorgen Træen, the result is a refreshing take on improvisations-turned-compositions. Featuring innovative soundscapes with archival material and an engaging transitory state. Listening to the album is akin to being on a voyage of discovery, in and out of the dream state. From the very beginning, the listener is met by ancient voices on tape, surrounded by distorted and dispersed sounds. Like stars on a moonless night, the sounds fall in and out of perceptibility, most twinkling, some falling. You suddenly wake up on a speeding train. As it enters a tunnel, ghostly voices sing a lullaby. The music gradually unfolds from mesmerizing melancholia to a ritualistic blowout. The music always takes the route of the unexpected and reaches momentums which shows why this is one of Norway's most unique constellations. Orbiting sounds gather around and assemble themselves into scenes, forming uncanny rooms collectively dreamed up by the artists. The album's first track Tre Vegar follows an enthralling pathway layered with field recordings and intensified by noise, suddenly plunging into a delightful stream of chords fleeting in mid-air. The variety of sounds that make up this glorious and aptly named 'Collage' is astounding. Elemental sounds range from the howling wind and soft-bright ringing of sheep-bells to the timeless trickling of a small stream of water. Strings of many timbres soar over animated croaks and quacks, assembling into a swampy symphony. The well-balanced diversity of acoustic and electric sounds has become the band's trademark. If there’s anything that defines SUDS, it’s friendship. Meeting through their love of the DIY scene currently emerging in Norwich, the band quickly found themselves gravitating towards writing songs together, and by Autumn 2021, Jack Ames (drums/vocals) joined Maisie Cater (vocals/guitar) and Dan Godfrey (guitar/vocals) to form a line-up that felt inherently natural. Stepping in on bass duties came Harry Mitchell, and things seemed to click instantaneously. Driven to keep the spark going they all upped sticks from their far flung edges of the county, pooled together to get a touring van and set to work. Just like their 2022 debut EP, In The Undergrowth, SUDS ventured down to Kent to record with producer Ian Sadler (Roam, Anavae), ready to explore the next chapter of their story. Step forth debut album The Great Overgrowth, a record brimming with addictive melodies and gorgeous moments of optimism. Their evocative and sometimes literary approach to lyrics takes inspiration from midwest emo and the 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene - Cater and Ames would regularly distract themselves while writing, gazing between the pages of books by Woody Guthrie, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan and Brontez Purnell - which appears across their songwriting and would quickly become the foundation for their sound. Finding a delicate balance of sensitive lyricism dripping in warmth and killer guitar hooks, The Great Overgrowth follows on from the EP, telling the next part of the tale, as a tight knit group of twenty-something year old friends struggling and floating through life, to becoming more confident in their everyday lives and friendships while embracing change. The band are already off to a flying start, conquering sets at 2000 Trees Festival, The Great Escape and Truck Festival, as well as sold out shows with Spanish Love Songs, Pool Kids and Martha. Their talent for achingly intelligent, relatable lyricism and a heft for devil-may-care creative output already puts them heads above the rest. Back in print - on white vinyl - for the first time since 2003, ‘The New Romance’ by Pretty Girls Make Graves, is the latest instalment of Matador’s ongoing catalogue series Revisionist History.  Pretty Girls Make Graves formed in Seattle in 2001, fused together out of the still glowing embers of nearly a dozen important groups. Andrea Zollo and Derek Fudesco had played together in Death Wish Kids and Area 51 along with Dann Gallucci, with whom Derek formed Murder City Devils. Shortly before the Murder City Devils called it quits, he and Andrea started Pretty Girls Make Graves with J. Clark (who was in Kill Sadie and Sharks Keep Moving) and Nick Dewitt and Nathan Thelen (both in Bee Hive Vaults).  Brilliantly produced by Phil Ek (Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, Les Savy Fav), ‘The New Romance’ magnifies Pretty Girls Make Graves’ songcraft and technical prowess while letting some air into their songs and keeping things in crisp focus. Every song on ‘The New Romance’ is an anthem, yet without traditional verses and choruses. Just what the doctor ordered...

Next up on Q1E2 Recordings - for the label's fifth release so far - is Dr Sud. He's a Rome-born, Berlin-raised producer whose music is a fusion of percussion-centric soundscapes and integrated jazz-leaning harmonies, drawing inspiration from diverse genres like electronica, funk, and house.

On 'Heading South', the broken beat don serves up his specialist percussive sound, folding all manner of drums into synth-smothered house. The EP explores the undulating cycle of morning into night, back into morning, inviting you to dance your way through it all.

'Brina', a word which in Italian refers to morning dew - perhaps found on a tent on the morning of a festival - represents the breaking of dawn with broken beats. The track breaks and squints into the start of the day with spacious kick drums leaving room for warm, almost familiar pads and keys.

Then, 'Life Itself' reflects daytime, revolving around an arpeggiating synth that soon makes way for luscious keys.

An excursion into percussive bliss concludes side A in the form of the magical, grin-inducing 'Evening Breath'. This, as you might have guessed, is where the listener cruises through smoothly into the final stages of the day. It encapsulates that last burst of light as the sun sets and a slight shiver of the evening air slivers up your spine.

Then, before you know it, the mysterious night arrives. Flip to that B side, and 'Tramontana' will greet you, inviting you to dance deep into the late hours.

When you're there, the chugging '3/4AM' will hit the spot like an unforgettable dance floor moment, bursting with low and slow Balearic tendencies.

Finally, 'Mondgesicht' - "Moonface" in German -fittingly concludes proceedings with deep lounge vibes. Mumbles of effortless trumpet manoeuvre through a swaying sea of percussion and delicious, wavering synth solo. The day is here again. The cycle is complete.

This is some seriously high-quality music on show here from Dr Sud. The EP is out on Q1E2 Recordings in October.

Drei Typen leisten mit ihrer Mischung aus Punk Rock, Hardcore und Rock'n'Roll Widerstand gegen schlechte Unterhaltung, trockene Kehlen und Intoleranz. Dreistimmiger Gesang, knackige Gitarren, saftiger Bass und ein Drumgewitter, das Nasenbeine zerbersten lässt - Garniert mit einer Prise Wortwitz und Humor." Seit Beginn der Bandgeschichte ist genau das, der Pressetext, der die Band SENDESCHLUSS aus Neunburg vorm Wald beschreibt. Warum sollte man auch verändern, was seit nunmehr 9 Jahren den metaphorischen Nagel auf den Kopf trifft? Und so bleibt die Band, bestehend aus Tom, Kiki und Tim, diesen Worten auch auf ihrer vierten Veröffentlichung mehr als treu. Die sechs Tracks der neuen EP ,Bavarian Wasted Youth" decken vom melodischen Punkrocksong bis zum Hardcoreknaller mit Metalkante wieder alle Sparten ab, die den geneigten Rockfan zum kollektiven Kopfnicken bewegen und vor allem die Band selbst nach wie vor begeistern. Diesmal jedoch mit einem Unterschied. Alle enthaltenen Texte sind in bairischem Dialekt verfasst. Natürlich ist Mundartmusik, vor allem im Bairischen, mittlerweile nichts Neues mehr, da Künstler wie Hannes Ringlstetter, Karin Rabhansl, Claudia Koreck, Dicht & Ergreifend, Bbou, Liquid oder auch die Spider Murphy Gang längst auch überregional erfolgreich sind. Aber da der Punk- und Hardcoresektor bis auf ein paar Ausnahmen hier noch echten Nachholbedarf zu vermelden hat, hat sich das Neunburger Trio einen echten Herzenswunsch erfüllt, und ,Bavarian Wasted Youth" Leben eingehaucht. Und wie könnte man echte Emotionen besser überliefern als in der Sprache, die man seit Kindertagen spricht? Doch was hat es mit diesem Titel eigentlich auf sich? Wörtlich übersetzt geht es ja um die "Bayerische verschwendete Jugend", was im ersten Moment vielleicht unpassend wirken mag, da es keineswegs darum geht, irgendwelche Jugendsünden zu bereuen, oder die Sinnlosigkeit des Lebens als junger Mensch im bairischen Raum zu beklagen. Eher soll sich von den konservativen Wertevorstellungen "der Alten" abgegrenzt und eine tolerantere Weltanschauung und ein alternativer Lebensstil zum Ausdruck gebracht werden, wobei aber auf ein gewisses Maß an "Bavarian Living" nicht verzichtet werden muss. Frischer Wind für alte Gepflogenheiten sozusagen. Wo also so mancher Stammtischbruder um die Betonpfeiler seiner heilen Welt Tränen vergießen wird und "den Jungen" mangels fehlenden Verständnisses verschwendete Lebenszeit vorwirft, da wird umso deutlicher, dass "Bavarian Wasted Youth" etwas freier übersetzt doch passt, wie die metaphorische Faust aufs Auge. Hannah White's searingly honest lyrical style and gift for adhesive melody

The last two were both recognised by the Americana Music Association UK, with
a nomination for her project with the Nordic Connections followed by a highly

Car Crash, from the About Time album. But Sweet Revolution is anything but a

Aber es ist das vergangene Jahrzehnt aufregender kreativer Begegnungen, die auf einen entscheidenden Moment für Johnny Marr im Jahr 2023 hinweisen - zehn Jahre inspiriertes Songwriting als Frontmann einer Band zu feiern.

Spirit Power wurde von Johnny Marr persönlich kuratiert und umfasst Songs aus vier britischen Top-Ten-Soloalben (The Messenger von 2013, Playland von 2014, Call The Comet von 2018, das Doppelalbum Fever Dreams Pts 1-4 von 2022), Non-Album-Single-Veröffentlichungen w, zwei brandneue Songs sowie eine Coverversion von Depeche Modes 'I Feel You', die zum Record Store Day 2015 veröffentlicht wurde. Die Deluxe-CD-Edition von Spirit Power wird fünf bisher ungehörte Demos und Raritäten enthalten: "Hi Hello" (Demo), "Somewhere" (Demo), "The Answer" (Crazy Face Version), "The Messenger" (Demo) und "Speak Out Reach Out" (Crazy Face Version).

Well, we're two full months into 2017 and the world continues to burn like an avalanche of flaming biohazard material sliding down a mountain of used needles into a canyon full of rat feces. But hey, it's not all bad: Portugal. The Man has a new album coming out called Woodstock.


PTM's last album came out over three years ago—a long gap for a band who've dropped roughly an album a year since 2006. And in true, prolific band fashion, they've spent almost every minute since 2013 working on an album called Gloomin + Doomin. They created a shit-ton of individual songs, but as a whole, none of them hung together in a way that felt right. Then John Gourley, PTM's lead singer, made a trip home to Wasilla, Alaska, (Home of Portugal. The Man's biggest fan, Sarah Palin) and two things happened that completely changed the album's trajectory.

First, John got some parental tough love from his old man, who called John on the proverbial carpet or dogsled or whatever you put people on when you want to yell at them in Alaska. What's taking so long to finish the album' John's dad said. Isn't that what bands do Write songs and then put them out' Like fathers and unlicensed therapists tend to do, John's dad cut him deep. The whole thing started John thinking about why the band seemed to be stuck on a musical elliptical machine from hell and, more importantly, about how to get off of it.

Second, fate stuck its wiener in John's ear again when he found his dad's ticket stub from the original 1969 Woodstock music festival. It seems like a small thing, but talking to his dad about Woodstock '69 knocked something loose in John's head. He realized that, in the same tradition of bands from that era, Portugal. The Man needed to speak out about the world crumbling around them. With these two ideas converging, the band made a seemingly bat-shit-crazy decision: they took all of the work they had done for the three years prior and they threw it out.

It wasn't easy and there was the constant threat that the band's record label might have them killed, but the totally insane decision paid off. With new, full-on, musical boners, the band went back to the studio—working with John Hill (In The Mountain In The Cloud), Danger Mouse (Evil Friends), Mike D (Everything Cool), and longtime collaborator Casey Bates (The one consistent producer since the first record). In this new-found creative territory, the album that became Woodstock rolled out naturally from there.

Remember that mountain of burning needles we were talking about Good. Because Woodstock is an album (Including the new single Feel It Still') that—with optimism and heart—points at the giant pile and says, Hey, this pile is fucked up!' And if you think that pile is fucked up too, you owe it to yourself—hell, to all of us—to get out there and do something about it.
