Deerhoof haben sich schon vor langer Zeit als eine der großartigsten Rockgruppen des Planeten etabliert - wer das für übertrieben hält, hat noch nicht genug Zeit damit verbracht, Deerhoof zu hören - das wahnsinnig erfinderische Quartett behandelt jedes seiner neuen Alben als eine Gelegenheit zur kreativen Wiedergeburt. Und doch sind sie irgendwie auch zutiefst zuverlässig, eine seltsame, aber wahre Beschreibung für eine Band, die so kreativ rastlos ist. Man weiß nie, wie ein neues Deerhoof-Album klingen wird, außer dass es immer nach Deerhoof klingen wird. Die Band wird durch solche Paradoxien definiert, wie "Noble and Godlike in Ruin" erneut bestätigt. Ihr neuestes Album ist entweder ein Porträt einer Welt, die in monströsen Hass, Entmenschlichung und Dollarzeichen abgleitet, oder ein eindringliches Selbstporträt der Band als Monster: ein intelligentes, sensibles, hybrides Wesen, das unermüdlich von Liebe singt, sich aber zunehmend von dieser Welt entfremdet. Die Musik ist fröhlich und ahnungsvoll, kybernetisch und zutiefst menschlich, alles zugleich. Streicher, die an avantgardistische Kammermusik und klassische Horrorfilm-Soundtracks erinnern, prallen auf Gitarren- und Basslinien. Das Schlagzeug ist manchmal gefiltert und klingt fast elektronisch, aber kein Computer könnte einen so funkigen und dynamischen Rhythmus erzeugen, bei dem jede winzige Variation von einem Snare-Schlag zum nächsten Welten der Möglichkeiten vermittelt. An der Spitze steht die unnachahmliche Altstimme von Satomi Matsuzaki. Eine Stimme der Einsamkeit, deren schlichte Ruhe seltsam außerhalb des Mahlstroms der Band zu stehen scheint, zu dem sie mit ihren zackig-präzisen Bassläufen selbst beiträgt. Als Einwanderin der ersten Generation in den USA hat sie nie versucht, ihren japanischen Akzent oder ihre Karaoke-esken Vortrag zu verbergen. Auf "Noble und Godlike in Ruin" wirkt dies abwechselnd als Ausdruck von Einsamkeit und als kühle Provokation gegenüber Systemen der Unterdrückung und Kontrolle. ,Kindness is all I needed from you", singt sie auf dem epischen Albumabschluss ,Immigrant Songs`. ,But you think we're in your house." Nicht lange danach explodiert der Song, sein eng gewickelter Art-Pop macht Platz für mehrere Minuten heulenden Lärm. Auch wenn das Thema düster sein mag - wie könnte es anders sein - tragen die Songs trotzigen Optimismus in ihrer Weigerung, sich den Konventionen oder überlieferten Weisheiten zu beugen. Da ist diese berühmte Zeile von Dylan Thomas über das Wüten gegen das Sterben des Lichts: "Noble and Godlike in Ruin" fühlt sich ein wenig so an. Die Welt mag untergehen, aber Deerhoof gehen schwungvoll unter.

Formed in Oakland just before the pandemic's onset in late 2019, SPY has built on the foundation of bands like Bad Brains and Poison Idea rather than following the current wave of metallic hardcore. They’re set to unleash their latest EP, Seen Enough, on Closed Casket Activities, out February 21. No song on Seen Enough ever overstays its welcome, instead embodying what makes hardcore frenetic. Burning through six songs in under ten minutes, every track is a testament to the energy the band has built up through relentless touring. SPY worked with Jack Shirley at Oakland's Atomic Garden to record the EP. Shirley captured their essence by recording live to tape, eschewing the modern practice of individual tracking in favor of a more immediate, visceral approach that better represents their explosive live show. That in-room chemistry is immediately apparent – songs like "Stay In Your Lane" maintain the texture and grit you'd get at a show in between every huge riff. Seen Enough doesn't hide what it's about: society's continued descent with diminishing hope for course correction. From the jump, SPY has followed in the lineage of Bay Area punks like Dead Kennedys and Ceremony in both attitude and awareness. Their latest offering maintains the critical edge of their earlier material while expanding their lyrical scope, delivering a streamlined punch that hits hard through its runtime. By staying true to themselves, SPY has carved out their own niche in the modern hardcore landscape. After touring with legends and contemporaries alike including Gel, Full of Hell, Ceremony, Municipal Waste, Sunami and playing basically every fest worth caring about including Sound and Fury, Outbreak, Sick New World and LDB, 2025 is set to be a monstrous year for SPY.

Written and recorded in a firestorm of creativity during the mastering phase of Lukah's upcoming double LP with Real Bad Man, Permanent Blackface is a monstrous vignette displaying the true power of Lukah's songwriting and the technical brilliance of his team. The album flashes before you like a lightning strike illuminating a barren cityscape.

Introducing himself as Mr. Blackface, Lukah identifies the true artist's responsibility to hold a mirror to the listener in order to confront and disarm taboos. In both content and music, the record balances vulgarity and introspection, the horror of silence, and the comfort of colossal, discordant sound. Over 12 songs the celestial, often blood-soaked color palette of soul and R&B that gave emotional weight to Why Look Up and Raw Extractions has been scraped away like a charred skeleton. With a small cast of voices consisting entirely of Lukah's immediate family, and production duties handled in-house by WALZ, Deener, Hollow Sol, Cities Aviv, SB11, and Lukah himself, the record has the intimacy of a theater production. The only voices present are Lukah, joined by his mother providing scat vocals, and his grandfather discussing the Jungian self-hatred of the colonial project and its terrifying repercussions for contemporary Black Amer-icans, with a fitting invocation of Dr. Frankenstein's monster. The beats here are reminiscent of noir, 78rpm swing and big band, evoking the underlying horror of a pre-Civil Rights movement America, where segregational binaries invert-ed folk tales through the white terror of ghosts, the black "spook", and mythic themes of fate and free will. The whip-lash of shifting perspectives keeps your head on a swivel in way only Lukah's superior pen can elucidate. Will it trigger anger that first voice you hear on Permanent Blackface is Judy Garland singing "Sweet Chariot"? But isn't this just Lukah speaking through her, announcing he's got "The Southin his mouth"? As the internet endlessly debates intention and appropriation in our artistic history, the insignificance of this small sample is put into perspective: another white pebble in a black ocean of Lukah's creation. "If the sun don't shine today / pray the sun come out tomorrow...pray the sun pierce through the sorrow"

Crankers of amp, torturers of fuzzbox and denizens of small-hours salvation, Thee Alcoholics dished out a rancorous and righteous debut in their decent `Feedback' - one that filtered gnarled riffage and motorik malevolence through a uniquely debauched prism in pursuit of some extremely ill-advised audial dystopia. Thee Alcoholics may have started life as the home-birthed brainchild of Rhys Llewellyn (Hey Colossus/Acidliner/Drmcnt) yet an evolution since has proven the ultimate form of this beastly creation to be the live arena. In assembling cohorts to turn these visceral jams into something to shake rafters and rattle pint-glasses, new frontiers of ornery intensity have made themselves manifest, and such is the form of the monstrous Bear Bites Horse Sessions, a live-in-the-studio document recorded with Wayne Adams at Bear Bites Horse studio in Haggerston, London, chronicling a band breathing life into a Stoogian paradigm, and doing so apparently whilst barely breaking a sweat. Taking essential elixirs of in-the-red mania, hypnotic repetition and deathless swagger, these twelve jams walk a crooked path that neighbours the nihilistic vortex of Loop, the saturnine lurch of The Fall and the deadpan derangement of The Heads but remains possessed of a maverick charisma and mischief all its own. It has now been four years since our return to earth in "2020 back to earth". There we had found a cold and inhospitable place, humanity was inexorably channeled on the path to extinction. We therefore decided to flee immediately in search of another planet where we could dwell.
We therefore came to New Babylon, a planet inhabited by humanoids but also by monstrous and ravenous creatures. There are "giants" that march about raising immense clouds of dust, stealing and plundering everything from people. Giants much like our corporations, they know no defeat and have no weaknesses, at least apparent ones.
There are old warriors like jarek who wait for war to feel like heroes, to feel alive. They find their dimension within the battle, where the line between hero and assassin magically blurs.
There are pyramids erected by men who think they are gods and turn the things life gives them into weapons and death, changing their use and meaning. Little men who think themselves omnipotent, burying knowledge of how life works under piles of lies.
We find a myriad of slaves, surrendered to live in huge troughs. They toil at nothing and find meaning in nothing. They prefer a convenient lie to an inconvenient truth.
In short, we realize that we have arrived in a world very much like earth. We are aliens but in a certain way we feel at home. We want to know, to understand, to evolve. We don't recognize ourselves in this deceived humanity, we don't give in, we believe. Nature, life is wonderful but when one thing loses its usefulness life gently explains to it that it is time to make room for something else. This existence has already explained to the dinosaurs.

Obwohl "God of the Godless" mit der brachialen Kraft tosender Winterstürme und dem oft rauen Charme des Nordseewetters daherkommt, haben die Norddeutschen auch die cineastischen Aspekte ihres Sounds verfeinert, die sie auf dem Vorgängeralbum "Beyond Acheron" (2023) fest etabliert hatten. Auf einem soliden Fundament aus Brutal Death zimmern TEMPLE OF DREAD mit Hilfe von dunklen und schweren Stützbalken, Querstreben aus überraschender Melancholie und sogar einigen 12-Zoll Black Metal Nägeln ihre wuchtigen Songstrukturen. Als Zierelement dient erneut ein Gastbeitrag des INSIDIOUS DISEASE, ASINHELL und ehemaligen MORGOTH Sängers Marc Grewe. Die wuchtige Produktion von "God of the Godless" stammt wie gewohnt von Schlagzeuger Jörg Uken. In dessen renommierter Death Metal Klangschmiede, dem Soundlodge Tonstudio, wurden auch schon zahlreiche Langspieler solcher Szenegrößen wie unter anderen DEW-SCENTED, GOD DETHRONED, OBSCENITY, SUICIDAL ANGELS und WARPATH in Form gehämmert. TEMPLE OF DREAD wurden von Markus Bünnemeyer im Jahr 2017 auf Spiekeroog gegründet, als der Gitarrist den Entschluss fasste, seinen Mordshunger auf mehr Death Metal der alten Schule selbst zu stillen. Ein Jahr später stießen Sänger Jens Finger und Jörg Uken dazu, mit denen Bünnemeyer bereits bei SLAUGHTERDAY aktiv war. Dieses Dreiergespann besteht seitdem unverändert fort. Schon das erste Album "Blood Craving Mantras" (2019) schlug in Death Metal Kreisen hart ein. Die Arbeitstiere ließen in kurzer Folge zwei weitere Erfolgsalben, "World Sacrifice" (2020) und das von der Kritik in höchsten Tönen gefeierte "Hades Unleashed" (2021), auf die Welt los. Während sich das Trio für "Beyond Acheron" (2023) etwas mehr Zeit nahm, sind TEMPLE OF DREAD wieder auf der Überholspur unterwegs. Als Zierelement dient erneut ein Gastbeitrag des INSIDIOUS DISEASE, ASINHELL und ehemaligen MORGOTH Sängers Marc Grewe. Die wuchtige Produktion von "God of the Godless" stammt wie gewohnt von Schlagzeuger Jörg Uken. In dessen renommierter Death Metal Klangschmiede, dem Soundlodge Tonstudio, wurden auch schon zahlreiche Langspieler solcher Szenegrößen wie unter anderen DEW-SCENTED, GOD DETHRONED, OBSCENITY, SUICIDAL ANGELS und WARPATH in Form gehämmert. TEMPLE OF DREAD wurden von Markus Bünnemeyer im Jahr 2017 auf Spiekeroog gegründet, als der Gitarrist den Entschluss fasste, seinen Mordshunger auf mehr Death Metal der alten Schule selbst zu stillen. Ein Jahr später stießen Sänger Jens Finger und Jörg Uken dazu, mit denen Bünnemeyer bereits bei SLAUGHTERDAY aktiv war. Dieses Dreiergespann besteht seitdem unverändert fort. Schon das erste Album "Blood Craving Mantras" (2019) schlug in Death Metal Kreisen hart ein. Die Arbeitstiere ließen in kurzer Folge zwei weitere Erfolgsalben, "World Sacrifice" (2020) und das von der Kritik in höchsten Tönen gefeierte "Hades Unleashed" (2021), auf die Welt los. Während sich das Trio für "Beyond Acheron" (2023) etwas mehr Zeit nahm, sind TEMPLE OF DREAD wieder auf der Überholspur unterwegs. Noch besser: Die Ostfriesen begeistern endlich auch mit Live-Auftritten. Mit "God of the Godless" legen TEMPLE OF DREAD die Messlatte für intelligente Death Metal Brutalität wieder um einige Zentimeter höher auf!

Death metal can hardly get more dedicated and passionate about the old school Floridian sound than
TEMPLE OF DREAD on their fifth album "God of the Godless". Luckily, the East Frisians from German
island Spiekeroog are not mired in a swamp of stale nostalgia. Although "God of the Godless" comes
with the brutal power of harsh winter storms and the gritty texture of the often fierce North Sea
weather, the East Frisians have also refined the cinematic aspects of their sound that they had firmly
established on the predecessor "Beyond Acheron" (2023).

It’s 2024 and Egyptian-born artist of South Sudanese origin Sam Alfred has had a monstrous 12 months. A new year means stepping in a new zone with new tunes. This is Forward Step.

First is the title track “Forward Step (Journey Mix)”, an epic cow-bell-laden house hammer that blooms into a euphoric flower. Running with a 90’s club flavour, Sam lays airy synths over punchy piano and rave stabs while an all-powerful speech plays out, celebrating the idea that we’re all in control of writing our futures. There’s a bubbling over of excitement on this one as it builds and builds and builds!

Up next is “Care 4 U” – a crunchy drum club roller paired with fuzzy bass tones and a super hooky vocal loop. A section that’s been lodged in our brains from the moment we heard it. Toss in airy pads and a key melody that’s also impossible to forget and this track’s got you hook, line and sinker. In true Sam Alfred style, “Care 4 U” is yet more proof that this lad is a wizard at writing jacked-up club cuts, each full of fizz.

Third in line comes “Keep It” a relentless hypnotic piece of techno. Outer space synths drone while shuddering percussion rumbles beneath. It’s here where the EP takes a darker turn. The curtain closer and focus track for the EP drop is “Distance” – an acidic house track to seriously lock and load to. Characterised by sharp hi-hats and lively keys, as its name suggests this one goes and goes and goes.
