2024 Repress

Since their first release as Extrawelt 'Soopertrack' dropped on Border Community in 2005 Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe have had a remarkable run. They relentlessly toured the world with their highly esteemed live show and released plenty of killer releases on labels like Traum or Cocoon. Naturally, our ears were wide open when the Hamburg-based couple sent over a bunch of new productions to the KOMPAKT HQ. Announced as what they call a new, alternative path of production for them, more precisely "less computer, more hands on" we were directly intrigued by the power and rawness of their new sound.

In particular, two cuts stood out: 'PINK PANZER' is pure analog funk. A sluggish beat is paired with a highly effective synth riff. The idea is as simple as it gets but it's executed in such a masterful way. You can drop this track anywhere and anytime - it'll certainly set things on fire right away. 'ARGONAUT' follows an equally simple recipe but ups the tempo and energy levels by 100%. Heavy prime time saw tooth techno for the new generation that recall vintage Thomas P. Heckmann – perhaps if he were to wake up in a funky mood.

Ausgiebig betourten sie die Welt mit ihrer vielgelobten Live-Show und veröffentlichen zahlreiche Hit-Releases auf Traum oder Cocoon. Natürlich haben wir die Ohren gespitzt, als das Hamburger Duo uns einige neue Tracks ins Büro geschickt hat. Angesagt war ein neuer, alternativer Produktionsprozess, genauer, „weniger Computer- und mehr Handarbeit“ – von der rohen Kraft ihres neuen Sounds waren wir sofort fasziniert.

Besonders zwei Cuts stechen heraus: „PINK PANZER“ ist der reinste Analog-Funk. Ein schleppender Beat gekoppelt mit einem eindrucksvollen Synth-Riff. Die Idee ist so einfach wie genial und ausgearbeitet auf meisterlicher Art und Weise. Überall wo man den spielt –die Hütte brennt garantiert. „ARGONAUT“ folgt einem ähnlichen Prinzip, beschleunigt ist nur das Tempo und Energielevel. Schwerer Sägezahn-Techno für die Peak-Time und eine neue Generation, die sich noch an den alten Thomas P. Heckmann erinnern können – vielleicht, wenn er mal in einem funky Mood aufgewacht wäre.

Recorded by award-winning mastering engineer Kevin Gray's record label, Anthony Wilson's Hackensack West is Cohearent Records' follow-up to Kirsten Edkins' Shapes & Sound album. Produced by Joe Harley and recorded all-analogue/all-tube at Gray's studio, Cohearent Recording, the AAA vinyl release is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI and housed in a deluxe tip-on gatefold jacket.

The week before these sessions in the summer of 2023, I sat down each morning with the goal of composing one new song by day's end. I knew I'd soon be in the room with my dear friends Gerald Clayton, John Clayton, and Jeff Hamilton, three musicians whom I trust the most, and with whom I've played the most over the last couple of decades. I tried to imagine themes that would feel natural to us, the kinds of songs we could simply dive into without much thinking. When we headed to Kevin Gray's studio to record, I brought seven new songs along with me. Five are included on this album.

"Daido" is dedicated to Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama, who became known in the late 1960s for his grainy, sometimes blurry, high-contrast black and white images made throughout Japan. I love his pictures taken on the streets of various Tokyo neighbourhoods such as Shinjuku. His portrait of a menacing stray dong, from his series "A Hunter," is the kind of picture that, seen just once, is unforgettable. These days Daido is still out on the street making pictures, at the ripe young age of 85.

"Verdesse" has a sinuous, chorinho-like melody and rhythmic feel. The tune seems to weave and bob playfully in a space of brightness the way a grapevine seems to curl towards the sunlight. So I named it after a wine grape native to the pre-Alpine region of Isère, near Grenoble in eastern France, that makes a particularly delicious and drinkable white wine.

I wrote "Sunday," well...on Sunday. It unfolds slowly, like a good Sunday does when there's nothing to do, you can sleep in, you've got your person beside you, and you just relax into the day.

"The Lands" is dedicated to a family very dear to my heart: that of tenor saxophonist Harold Land. My mother met Harold when they were both teenagers growing up in San Diego, California. The two of them became lifelong friends, and a little later, Harold enjoyed a fruitful musical association and close friendship with my father, Gerald Wilson. Harold, his lovely wife Lydia, and their son Harold Jr. were extended family for us; they looked after me with love and care. Some of my first gigs ever as a young guitarist were with Harold's incredible band that included Oscar Brashear, Billy Higgins, Richard Reid, and Harold Land Jr.

I've loved Todd Rundgren's "Marlene" since I first heard it on his epic double-album Something/Anything. With its tender, well-contoured melody buoyed by a few special harmonic surprises, it almost seems like something from the pen of Burt Bacharach. It tells such a complete musical story. Rundgren's recorded version has a beautiful endlessly repeating tag. So we played the melody simply, and used the tag as a small staging area for a bit of improvising.

Hackensack West is our alias for engineer Kevin Gray's studio Cohearent Recording, a place inspired by Rudy Van Gelder's first studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. Located inside Van Gelder's parents' home, the musicians played in the living room! It was there, in 1954, that Thelonious Monk recorded his classic tune "Hackensack," a "contrafact" melody over the chord changes to the Gershwins' "Oh, Lady Be Good!" In contrafact-like fashion, my own bebop-spirited melody "Hackensack West" seems to nod toward the changes of a few recognizable standards, without corresponding to any particular one.

"I Oughtta Give You a Shot in the Head for Making Me Live in This Dump is the debut studio album by American alternative rock band Shivaree. The album was originally released in 1999 and featured their big hit “Goodnight Moon”, which featured in the tv-series Dawson’s Creek and the films Kill Bill: Volume 2 and Silver Linings Playbook. The album spawned a second single, “Bossa Nova”. I Oughtta Give You a Shot in the Head for Making Me Live in This Dump celebrates its 25th anniversary and is therefore available on vinyl for the first time and includes an insert. "

Thoughts will come to the 21-year-old singer-songwriter in dreams, or as she writes lyrics in studio sessions, words floating onto the page before she's really had a moment to realise what they are. "As soon as we start making the music, my brain sort of turns off," she explains. "I'll be sitting there, writing all this stuff that feels like a load of nonsense, and a month later, I'll look back and be like `oh'. It all comes from a place I didn't even realise was there." In learning how to open up to herself, gglum ended up finding a kindred spirit in producer Karma Kid (Maisie Peters, Shygirl, Connie Constance), pushing past her natural bedroom-pop introversion to find joy in the process of collaboration. Whether it's the ragged radio-rock of `SPLAT!' ("basically about realising that somebody you held up very highly is actually just a massive shambles of a person") or the riotous, industrial energy of `Easy Fun', Smoker is able to reshape her vocal around the mood, creating a record which expertly balances light and shade. "I've never really done anything in like that vocal style before," she says of `Easy Fun's near-spoken delivery. "I love that song because it's not something I would have come up with on my own, but Karma Kid was great at pushing me out of my comfort zone. I just thought like, look: I can be a little silly with this." Zwei Jahre nach ihrem letzten Album "Slave Driver" veröffentlicht das niederländische Quartett pünktlich zu ihrem 35. Geburtstag "Shadow Soul". Es ist bereits das 8. Album von Dead Head und wir sind immer noch davon überzeugt, dass die Jungs eine der am meisten unterschätzten Bands in der Geschichte des Thrash Metal sind. Sie haben nie etwas Schwaches oder Schlechtes veröffentlicht und was sie herausbringen, ist erstklassiger Metal! "Shadow Soul" knüpft nahtlos an diese Tradition an und präsentiert eine kraftvolle Fortsetzung ihres Erbes.

"Shadow Soul" ist also keine Überraschung, aber wer das mag, was Dead Head in den letzten 35 Jahren gemacht haben, der wird auch ihren neuesten Output lieben.

Zwar bleibt das Album dem für die Band typischen schnellen und aggressiven Thrash Metal treu, aber hier und da finden sich auch Death Metal und sogar Heavy Metal Arrangements. Das Album bietet größtenteils Hochgeschwindigkeits-Thrash ohne jegliche Trends oder unnötige Melodien und Tunes.

Everything flows. Arutani's third album is a very personal note on change and life. The stories we see and create, the balance of hope and melancholia that accompanies every step we take. Die weibliche Stimme ist seit jeher eine Projektionsfläche sexistischer Erwartungen, deren bewusste und unbewusste Reproduktion die britische Pop-Forscherin Helen Reddington treffend als "gender ventriloquism" (die Bauchrednerei der Gender-Stereotypen) bezeichnet. Auch im 21. Jahrhundert, ein halbes Jahrhundert nach Nico, ist der Bruch dieser Erwartungen - ungeachtet aller Empowerment-Posen - immer noch eine auffällige Geste. Wie etwa im Fall der 21-jährigen, in Berlin studierenden Wienerin Edna Million. Deren tiefer, jeden Anflug von Emphase verweigernder, dunkler Gesang bettet sich auf der spröden Unterlage ihrer mit lockerer Hand angeschlagenen Halbakustischen, die klingt wie zwei, weil der übers Mikro aufgeschnappte Saitenklang sich mit dem warmen Sound von Pickup und Verstärker ergänzt. So entsteht eine eindringliche Intimität, die den narrativen Details der von Million stoisch vorgetragenen Geschichten reichlich Raum zum Nachschwingen lässt. Das Debutalbum von Edna Million erscheint am 29.3 und kann ab sofort vorbestellt werden.

Erstmals auf Vinyl - das Debütalbum der Band. Himmelblaues, 180g schweres Vinyl, Gatefold. WINTERSTORM steht für die Vereinigung von stürmischem Powermetal mit Folk- und Vikingmetal aus dem hohen Norden. Mix aus NDW, New Wave, Punk/Rock und Metal spannend wie die wilden 80er. Konkret bedeutet das: kräftige Gitarrenriffs, Ohrwurm-Hooklines sowie markanter Gesang, der zwischen kraftvoll klar und charmant ungehobelt variiert. Immer getragen von einem druckvoll- treibenden Fundament aus Bass und Drums. Die Protagonisten dieser Band sind vier alte Hasen aus Ost und West, mit musikalischer Vergangenheit in Punk, Rock und Metal (Baujahre zwischen 1969 und 1979) und eine junge Häsin (Erstzulassung 2006). Dabei bringen Mon Général Lütsch, Sir Herrle, Rob a.D. und Costja Chaos Erfahrung aus dutzenden, durchaus erfolgreichen, Veröffentlichungen und mehreren hundert Konzerten (u.a. auch in Dubai und auf Rapa Nui/ Osterinsel) mit. Das junge, selbstbewusst- kesse Frollein Pia Höhne punktet dafür mit ihrer prägnanten Stimme und ihren erstaunlichen Fähigkeiten an Gitarre und Schlagzeug. Außerdem bringt sie als Dorfkind die Zugehörigkeit zur Freiwilligen Feuerwehr und zum lokalen Angelverein mit. Dass sie bei allen Entscheidungen das letzte Wort hat, versteht sich da von selbst. Als weiteres Alleinstellungsmerk: die Wortschöpfungskreativität. ,In der Tradition der Neuen Deutschen Welle, lassen wir Wörter entstehen, die ohne Erklärung auskommen. Und so für sich allein Bestand haben." Inspiriert von Kreationen wie ,Kebabträume" oder ,Mauerstadt" erschafft PIA UNITED eigene Wortschöpfungen. Beispielhaft dafür: ,Sirenendeutschland", ,Notwehrmodus" oder ,Spiellistengeschmack-Gewinnkomposition". Ein eigener Song sowie Feeling B-Cover "Artig auf der Flip.

So I have a problem: I hate everyone and all music. Well, OK, not everyone. But c’mon - you know what people are like. Honestly, they’re the worst. And fair enough I might not really hate all music, but let’s be honest: have you ever actually heard any music? I mean, jeeez. If I’m gonna listen to a record, I’ll need something that matches this misanthropy; something that really gets the neurotransmitters firing on all cylinders and ready to obliterate the feelgood factor. Something like Cleveland band Cruelster, basically. Cruelster are made up of members of Knowso, Perverts Again, and a plethora of other Ohio noiseniks. If it seems like you’ve seen that name before, it’s highly probable - they released a demo back in 2012 and have been sporadically dropping bundles of rough-edged sonic snot ever since, thanks to labels like Lumpy (whose own Dumpers are at the very least sonically adjacent) and Turbine Piss. This singles collection compiles all the non-album tracks they’ve released since that early demo to make a thrillingly ‘orrible racket. Twelve years’ worth of punk rottenness and general stupidity contained in 29 tracks and 40 noisy minutes. It is, of course, fucking brilliant. From the gleefully melodic dumbness (and Booji Boy-flavoured additions) of ‘My Embarrassment’ to the malevolent rumble of ‘Double Trouble’, not to mention a fabulously energised cover of Icona Pop’s dance-pop smash ‘I Love It’, every track here is a winner. It’s the perfect tonic for your rage and the perfect foil to a cruel world where everyone else’s disdain seems more pronounced than your own. You owe it to yourself to complete your record shelves with this instantly classic comp - it’s punk rock par excellence. And as for that ‘hating all music thing’... ah, who cares, this is all gold. Kann ein Albumtitel lügen? Ja, das kann er. Die vier Mitglieder der österreichischen Band BAITS nennen ihr zweites Studioalbum "All Filler No Killer". Doch der Inhalt ist genau das Gegenteil von dem, was auf dem Cover steht. Ist der Albumtitel eine subversive Kritik am Größenwahn eines alternden Rockstars? Das ist nicht ganz klar. Aber eines ist sicher: Das Album enthält keine Füller, nur Killer. Das Quartett um die charismatische Frontfrau Sonja Maier serviert auf "All Filler No Killer" 11 absolute Hits, die zwischen Nirvana, Weezer, Hole, Ramones und Amyl and the Sniffers oszillieren und dennoch eine einzigartige, unverwechselbare Identität bewahren. Punk ist nur das Basislager. Von dort aus erklimmt die vierköpfige Band musikalische Höhen, die unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten. Ob tanzbarer Popsong, mitreißender Garagenrock oder harmoniereiche Punkhymne - all diese Songs haben eines gemeinsam: Sie graben sich erst ins Ohr und dann direkt ins Herz.

Rancid-Sänger Tim Armstrong ist auch als Chef seines Labels Hellcat immer wieder für Überraschungen gut. Bestes Beispiel: The Interrupters. Angeführt von der sehr umtriebigen Singer-Songwriterin Aimee Allen begann die Ska-Band aus Los Angeles ihre Arbeit mit Armstrong mit einer Single für dessen populäre Tim-Timebomb-Serie. Davor veröffentlichte Allen ein recht erfolgreiches Soloalbum und war als Backgroundsängerin auf dem von Armstrong produzierten und mit einem Grammy ausgezeichneten Jimmy-Cliff-Album "Rebirth" zu hören. Auf "The Interrupters" verbinden sie und ihre Kollegen Ska, Reggae und Punk, nicht ohne jedoch auf Humor zu verzichten, wie etwa in Songs wie "White Noise" und "Liberty". Für Fans von Rancid, The Distillers, Streetlight Manifesto, Sublime, Operation Ivy, Two Tone.

"Das größte Problem, das die Kunst heutzutage hat, ist, dass sie nicht mehr weh tut", sagt GHØSTKID-Sänger und Provokateur Sebastian "Sushi" Biesler. "Vor allem hier in Deutschland haben die Leute so viel Angst davor, Grenzen zu überschreiten. Kunst zu machen, die zum Nachdenken und Fühlen anregt." So ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass Sushi und Co. mit dem zweiten Album von GHØSTKID, HOLLYWOOD SUICIDE, die Grenzen ihres Heimatlandes verlassen haben, um ihren energiegeladenen, hakenreichen Nu-Metalcore weiterzuentwickeln. Das Ergebnis ist ebenso aufrichtig wie musikalisch ambitioniert und klanglich makellos. GHØSTKID liefern Goth-Nu-Rock-Core, der die ohnehin schon hohe Messlatte, die GHØSTKID 2020 mit ihrem selbstbetitelten, von Pandemie überschatteten Century Media-Debüt gelegt haben, noch höher legen wird. In Dresden begann er seine musikalische Mission, den handgemachten Rock um die Welt und ins nächste Jahrtausend zu tragen.

SOYUZ (СОЮЗ) stole our hearts back in 2022 when we released their album Force Of The Wind to critical acclaim. Here we proudly present the predecessor to that LP, the band’s sophomore long player from 2019 that was previously only available digitally. It captures a pivotal evolving period in the band's career, the recordings giving a snapshot of what would become their sound on Force Of The Wind, yet with echoes of avant-psychedelic-pop footprints from yester years.

Produced at a time when band leader Alex Chumak had moved from Minsk to Kyiv, torn between the need to try something new and the homesickness it brought about. Travelling back to Minsk almost weekly, Alex joined fellow band members Mikita Arlou and Stanislav Murashko to lay down II at Studio 42. The album captures these transient feelings, contextualised through the broad scope of influences the band were nourished by. From MPB to Ethio-Jazz and the Italian library soundtracks of Piero Piccioni and Piero Umiliani, the album shines with touches of joy from across the globe.

The opening track 'Verocai' is a tribute to the Brazilian maestro and 'Mirouze', whilst being named after a French favourite of the band, Jean-Pierre Mirouze, pays clear homage to Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges. A ghostly sample and invisible connection to music made miles away in a different era that has influenced and become part of the band’s lives. This is further reinforced in the album's enchanting closer, the aptly titled 'Nascimento', another nod to the great Brazilian musician and singer.

The beginnings of the cinematic, soul-laden jazz SOYUZ are now known for, are on display across the likes of ‘Lyric’ and 'Motive I'. The latter an orchestrated jazz instrumental with sensuous string sections, all of which were recorded on the warmth of a Studer reel-to-reel and waltzing Rhodes keys.

SOYUZ’s wide-ranging palate is further demonstrated in tracks like ‘Business Partners’ with its Krauty, kosmische, new wave production featuring Inturist, and the oh-too-short Anatolian-influenced interlude 'Corrida'. Elsewhere, 'Tezeta' and ‘ES-2 Jazz’ hint at the psychedelic haze of soul-funk, with the former featuring verses from Serbian rapper Petar Martic.

For this new physical and digital release, the whole album was mixed from scratch by Ryan Power before Joker worked his magic on the remaster. More excellence is to come from SOYUZ, but in the meantime, we are thrilled to present this essential recording from the band’s foundational years, mixed to a level that does it the justice it deserves.

Hold Time is M. Ward's amazing follow-up to 2006's brilliant Post-War.Available on CD and LP, Hold Time is an eloquent and startlingly beautiful album. While past critics have compared him to everyone from John Fahey to Tom Waits to his old friend Howe Gelb, with Hold Time it's clear that M. Ward, with his brilliant guitar playing and innate sense of melody, is one of those rare and special talents who defy comparisons and compartmentalization.

"Bright Future" ist das zweite Solo-Album von Adrianne Lenker, bekannt als Sängerin und Songwriterin der amerikanischen Indie-Band BIG THIEF, auf 4AD. Ihr erstes eigenes Album seit "Songs & Instrumentals" aus dem Jahr 2020 wurde von Philip Weinrobe co-produziert und enstand unter der Mitwirkung von Nick Hakim, Mat Davidson und Josefin Runsteen. Adrianne wagte sie sich ins Unbekannte, fasste sich ein Herz und schrieb ihre bis dato berührendsten Solo-Songs, die sie im Herbst 2022 mit einigen ihrer Lieblingsmenschen aufnehmen konnte. Abseits der Zivilisation und urbanen Einflüssen wagten sich Hakim, Davidson, Runsteen und Lenker ins Ungewisse. Der Co-Produzent und Tontechniker von "Bright Future", Philip Weinrobe, bereitete das Studio vor. Er war schon bei früheren Soloalben Adriannes Partner, aber dieses Mal war es etwas Neues. Adrianne hatte nicht die Absicht, ein Album zu machen. Stattdessen wollten sie die Songs ohne Erwartungen erforschen. Die Geborgenheit und Leichtigkeit des Waldes um das Double Infinity Studio ist ein prägendes Element der Aufnahmen. Das Ergebnis ist, dass "Bright Future" die besten Eigenschaften von filigranen Sounds mit der Spontanität von Field-Recordings vereint. Es gibt Details, die man erst beim zweiten oder dritten Hören entdecken wird und das macht die neuen Songs zu einem ungefilterten Erlebnis und beweist einmal mehr, dass Adrianne Lenker zu den größten Songwriterinnen ihrer Generation gehört. Das Album enthält zudem auch die Originalaufnahme des inzwischen zum modernen Klassiker gereiften Big Thief-Songs "Vampire Empire", der zuletzt sogar in der Playliste von Barack Obama auftauchte - unbewusst gibt der Albumtitel "Bright Future" einen Fingerzeig, wohin sich Adriannes Lenker Karriere als Musikerin entwickeln wird.
