Mick Harris is one of the world's greatest compositional treasures. Starting his career as the energy dynamo behind the drum kit of the UK's Napalm Death, he made the term Blastbeat a household reference, wrote the band's music on his mother's one string guitar, and joined the Guinness Book of World Records for composing the world's shortest song. In the decades succeeding, he has re-inventedmusic several more times, from the wild abstract jazz of Painkiller with John Zorn and Bill Laswell, to the drowning ambience of his Lull project, all while continuing to build a world that he can truly call his own - the dark post-dub of SCORN. "Reaching 54 this year - this won't stop the challenge, driving me more so now than ever" - says Mick Harris, commenting on the recent phase in his creativity. The pandemic isolation and lockdown pushed the work of the maestro more than anything else could have. In 2021, his output is ever-increasing, releasing the newest collabs with Justin K. Broadrick and the single "Distortion", featuring one of the most outstanding voices of hip-hop - Kool Keith - his closest collaborator, Ohm Resistance founder - Submerged. Commenting on the release of "Distortion", Mick Harris said to mxdwn: "I enjoy collabs - they bring something different to the swim." Working on his own and collaborating with everyone from Sleaford Mods' James Williamson, on the previous SCORN release or with Kool Keith and Submerged on "Distortion", Mick Harris never had problems with putting energy into beats and sound landscapes, combining various surreal elements with three basic elements that always push Harris further, that are extremely crucial for both Mick Harris and SCORN as a project - frustration, anger and anxiety. Combining the signature soundscapes of Scorn with tartareous textures, the newest album "The Only Place" reaches a psychedelic groove, based on what Harris calls "Pushing an original idea further" with his own shades of light and dark and celestial electricity of what SCORN is. Introducing Jahnah Camille (pronounced Hannah), a young artist emerging from the DIY scene of Birmingham, Alabama. Camille's songs capture the rollercoaster of teenage angst, heartbreak and introspection over a well-made bed of driving guitars and catchy, compact melodies. A five-track EP infused with anxiety and grit, i tried to freeze light, but only remember a girl, is a shining introductory project smoothed over by Camille's sugar-sweet voice and cutting lyricism. Much of the EP's songs were written and recorded while Camille was still in high school, taking trips back and forth from Atlanta to record. In the time following, Camille dug into the local DIY scene, steadily gaining an impressive resume of opening slots as she cut her teeth supporting acts like Clairo, Soccer Mommy, Cryogeyser and Wednesday as they came through town. Now 19 years old, Camille delivers an excellent snapshot of those uncertain and wildly hopeful late teen years. i tried to freeze light captures Camille approaching heartbreak and self-perception from a variety of angles-each track playing slightly with genre and cadence and infused with influence from her musical heroes, like Liz Phair and Fiona Apple. The EP pulls at a range of alternative rock and pop threads, there's the 90s alternative rock opener "flesh" and the country-gaze-tinged "roadkill." Camille then softens on the swooning synth-layered ode to love lost, "elliot," before relaxing into a folksy, acoustic "paper doll."I wanna talk and not spill out carnival sounds" Camille confides on closer "carnival sounds"--a track that illuminates the singer's art-pop influences and knack for revealing tender and at times searing admissions through her lyricism. While misunderstandings color the emotional sentiment of the EP, Camille's artistry and expression come through clear as day on i tried to freeze light, presenting her as a promising young voice with real talent and a hunger for musical experimentation.

In 1980, the English rock band The Only Ones released their third and final studio album Baby’s Got A Gun. While they produced the previous two albums, for Baby’s Got A Gun they joined forces with the acclaimed producer Colin Thurston, who is best known for his work with Duran Duran, Talk Talk, and The Human League among others. The album features guest performances by lead vocalist of Penetration, Pauline Murray, on the tracks “Fools” and “Me And My Shadow”. “Fools” is the only time that the band had released a cover version, which is originally a song by American country musi- cian Johnny Duncan. Two years after the album release, The Only Ones officially disbanded.

With Toby Tobias' debut LP for Delusions Of Grandeur dropping on the 16th October we wanted to give you a little taste of what to expect with a couple of tracks plus a brilliant remix from DOG regular Franc Spangler.

Kicking things off we have the twisted machine funk of The Wonder featuring vocals from Atwell. 808 beats bringing the vintage electro vibes whilst Atwell's vocal hints at the golden era of Chicago house, adding a soulful touch to the rigid groove. Next up is Only Getting Better, diving into deeper waters with bubbling pads and pulsing bass line. Finally, we have Franc Spangler getting busy on the remix, turning in a floor focused jam which brings the vocal to the fore and a big beefy bassline to bounce to.

MEMBERS ONLY is back for 2024 with another entry in what must be one of the most creatively off-the-wall series of edits ever committed to wax. The 4 cuts on offer here deftly blur the lines between disco, house, and EBM reminiscent of The Music Box or Medusa's. "4 The Ones Who Know".

Another great artist from the 80s back to vinyl: Roberto Buti has been involved in many important projects in the past, sometimes as a composer, sometimes as an arranger and many times by giving his voice for the project: “Xenon – Symphony”, “Next – You’re An Illusion”, “Reeds – In Your Eyes”, “Dr. Martini – You Are The One”, “Bob Robert – Storm In A Teacup”, just to name a few.

After almost 40 years, Mr. Buti is back in the 80s Italo Disco scene with a beautiful new track “You’re The Only One”. The vinyl release has an original production by Buti on the A side and as an alternative, the Flashback Remix (by Electro Potato) on the B side. Limited edition of 175 copies on the market.

The One & Only Scott H. Biram showcases the singer's signature unapologetic style. Tracks like "No Man's Land" describe the hazards of growing up poor in a small Texas town, breathing the fumes from oil wells and brush fires. "Inside a Bar" captures the feel of an empty saloon on a slow Monday night. "I was going for the sound of loneliness and alcoholism colliding."

"I view my albums as collages, combining elements from punk, metal, blues, country, and bluegrass. They reflect the diverse aspects of life - it's not a concept but an expression," explained Biram.

Funkrockfolk mit animierenden Grooves aus Berlin Bis zur Pandemie konnte sich Holler my Dear über jede Menge Resonanz und internationale Bühnenerfolge freuen. Die drei Alben des weit gereisten Berliner Sextetts erhielten auch außerhalb Deutschlands viel Lob. Bei Festivals (u.a. X-Jazz, Reeperbahn, Jazz Open Stuttgart, Jazz & the City Salzburg, Mexico City, Penang, Kairo, Teheran) und in Clubs feierte die Band rauschende Feste. Im Juni 2023 veröffentlichte Holler my Dear die EP Aftermath, deren Songs u.a. mit der (Post)-Coronastimmung abrechnen und die eine elektronischere Soundästhetik ausloten. Nun schlägt Holler my Dear das nächste Kapitel auf. Die Songsammlung An Only Me Is A Lonely You präsentiert einerseits eine Rückbesinnung auf die akustische Grandezza von jazziger Trompete und Akkordeon, neben Winklers extrem variablem Gesang von jeher Markenzeichen der Band. Andererseits wagt das Sextett neuerdings gewitzte Flirts mit rauem Funk, Soul und Rock im Stil der frühen Siebziger oder auch im Geist des unvergessenen Prince. Verglichen mit dem Vorgänger wirkt die neue Produktion etwas heller, teils geradezu uplifting. Dafür sorgen stärkere Grooves von Schlagzeug und E-Bass, prägnante Riffs und eruptive Instrumental-Einsätze sowie mehr Humor in musikalischen und textlichen Details. So unmittelbar wie nie wird die immer wieder hochgelobte Dynamik und Bühnenenergie von Holler my Dear auf Tonträger eingefangen. Die absichtsvoll "schmutzige" Ästhetik sei einerseits aus der Stilistik der Songs erwachsen, sagt Laura Winkler. Andererseits hat Produzent Dennis Rux (Angels Of Libra, Hamburg Spinners, Tetrao Urogallus) einen starken Anteil daran. Der Hamburger ist ausgewiesener Spezialist für hochkarätiges Vintage-Studioequipment, von Mikrophonen über Vorverstärker bis zu Band-Echos und anderen Effektgeräten, die er schon seit Dekaden sammelt. Während der Aufnahmen befand sich die Band größtenteils im selben Raum, was den bekannten Live-Esprit entfachte. Auf nachträgliche Korrekturen oder gar Overdubs wurde weitgehend verzichtet, das verstärkt den direkten Eindruck. Dazu passend erscheint Winklers gravitätische Stimme wendiger denn je. Neben eingängigen und fast hymnischen Melodien setzt sie verstärkt auf rhythmische Phrasierungen bis hin zu Rap-ähnlichen Passagen mit perkussivem Charakter.

40 year anniversary release of this in demand modern soul masterpiece. For their third vinyl outing, Selector Series dig into the Archives of New Jersey’s Debbie Records from 1981 to re-issue this storming boogie re interpretation of The Carpenters standard, which found itself a legion of fans in the UK thanks to Gary Dennis’s championing of it.

In a pre Discogs era, this record attracted a £400 price tag amongst serious collectors back in the late eighties, with the original pressings still going for £500+ even now. The album has been re issued by several different labels over the ensuing years, but this double header is being made available for Record Store Day on a seven inch format for the first time officially, featuring the original album sleeve artwork.

If I Could Only Remember My Name was the debut solo record from David Crosby. Recorded in 1970 after the passing of his girlfriend Christine and released in February of 1971, the album explores themes including loss and disorientation. The album features a who's who of contributors from the San Francisco Bay area including Paul Kantner and Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane, Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, and Santana, and his cohort from Los Angeles including Graham Nash, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell.

The album has attained a cult status throughout the last 50 years, hailed for its spooky, psychedelic, and truly unique sounds.

AllMusic gave the album 4.5 stars, with reviewer Stanton Swihart writing: "With his ringing, velvety voice — the epitome of hippie crooning — and inspired songwriting, he turns If I Could Only Remember My Name into a one-shot wonder of dreamy but ominous California ambience."

All the hallmarks of a top-notch Analogue Productions reissue are here for you to savor: Mastered directly from the original master tape by Bernie Grundman and cut at 45 RPM. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, and housed in tip-on old style gatefold double pocket jackets with film lamination by Stoughton Printing.

Blizzard is an italian project well known for those who loves those 1995/1996 sounds from Italy, when Eurodance took over the european charts. Release originally on the X-Energy Records label. Produced by Francesco Alberti, also responsible for many sucessfull releases on the DWA label, teh track was sung for a young Sharon May Linn, dutch singer with a large carreer in Italian productions. It’s hard to decide which track from Blizzard is our preferred to we decided to come up with an EP including their two first singles ‘It’s Only Love' (1995) and ‘Without You’ (1996).

Dedicated to the great Binvanga Wainaina, whose July 2014 Chimurenga story the title derives from.

Fabled jazz-rock group Soft Machine present this heartfelt tribute to one of the greats of British jazz - trumpeter Harry Beckett - covering his stunning “The Dew at Dawn” on this limited edition 7” vinyl, with a cover of a classic Softs tune on the B side.

This is the second 7” in My Only Desire Records’ Brit Jazz 45s series, which sees some of their favourite contemporary jazz acts each making brand new studio recordings of two classic compositions from the golden era of ‘60s and ‘70s British jazz.

Now led by guitar master John Etheridge, an original Soft Machine member since the mid-‘70s and Canterbury scene veteran saxophonist Theo Travis, the band has undergone some recent lineup changes with bassist Fred Thelonious Baker (a former Harry Beckett bandmate) joining for 2023’s ‘Other Doors’ album. This is also the first recording with drummer Asaf Sirkis, who has replaced the late British jazz legend John Marshall.

Etheridge and Travis’ unique arrangement has upped the tempo of the “The Dew at Dawn” (originally released on Ogun Records in 1975) pushing the Caribbean-infused groove to the fore. Beckett’s joyful theme - first played on Etheridge’s guitar and then picked up by Travis’ mesmeric soprano saxophone - evokes the sun rising over the misty Hackney marshes and the hope of a better future. The track is underpinned by Baker’s nimble bass guitar and Sirkis’ scattering drums, with Etheridge’s superb soloing honed over a stellar five-decade career.

The Vinyl Only label rolls on towards its 20th release here with Mar De Novo serving up the irresistible Apericena EP. 'Quantity Check' is a low-slung funker with noodling baselines and nice loose percussive rhythms under some exotic vocals. 'Blue Eyes Clear' is a more lavish and downtempo number of chilling by the Med come sundown and then comes Ryu's Rub of 'Quantity Check' which is more funky and fat-bottomed. 'Nao Fazer Nado' rounds out an escapist EP with some dreamy melodic chill-out sounds that will have you gazing off to the stars.

Multi-instrumentalist Oscar Browne's roots lie in the foundational intricacy of golden-age songwriting A founding member of the London based folk- collective Broadside Hacks (amongst other banded- ventures), Oscar Browne's debut solo endeavour 'Never Quite Right' was released in 2022 to critical acclaim; an established inauguration which saw him eventually signing to So Young Records in the spring of 2023. Following a six-month spree in which Browne found himself tirelessly writing in order to process the changes taking place around him, the five songs which would eventually go on to form his debut EP 'If Only', are a deep- dive into the heart and soul of an artist who masterfully captures all the joys and heartaches of life in your early-twenties. Recorded over one week at Bristol's The Playpen, home to producer Ali Chant (Aldous Harding, Katy J Pearson), 'If Only' was all-in-all, a long time coming. Selfaccustomed to doubling things up and hiding imperfections, it was through the art of collaboration, and Ali's teachings in the power of emotional transparency that the pairing of Browne and Chant really shined. Sessions for the album spanned multiple non-traditional recording spaces including a storefront in Bridgeport, Chicago and a canyon in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, with an eminent cast of creative musicians including Ben LaMar Gay, Macie Stewart, Anna Butterss, Mikel Patrick Avery, and Dan Bitney of Tortoise, all of whom Burch met for the first time in the moments before they played. These moments of instant collaboration were then edited, decomposed, and recontextualized by Burch, resulting in a deeply organic, energetic-yet-patient addition to the canon of modern composition.
