One of the most expansive instrumental Hip Hop series to date, MF DOOM’s lauded Special Herbs collection assembles a mountainous collection of his beats, ranging from series exclusives to slightly reworked favorites he produced for himself and others. Released under the alias Metal Fingers, Special Herbs succeeds at capturing DOOM’s highly influential sound which continually breaks and reinterprets the rules of the game in favor of The Super-Villain. This new album you hold in your hands, Sleep Circle, is this newly recorded, abridged version of Sleep informed by those concert experiences and focusing on the movements within the composition that are more in the foreground. This way Sleep Circle becomes a hallucinatory 90-minute trip into the hypnagogic state. For Max, the approach offered new insights into his epic composition: “Some of these compositions, such as Dream 11, Moth-like Stars or Non-Eternal, are so rich in their poetic core that I wanted the music to be experienced in a more traditional way. I first wrote a structure for a concert performance. The new version we’ve recorded now is based on these performances, which also means that it has a slightly different architecture. It's like Sleep distilled.”

Flipping to the B, and the biggest thank you to Rob himself for spending weeks searching old DAT tapes in his loft to find the original pre master of the driving remix from the late Iteration X. They don’t come more heads down, and hypnotic than this. Throbbing bass stabs, luscious chords and in true Iteration X style, a roller that you could keep you shaking for days on end.

It only seems fitting to dedicate this re issue to Simon Copleston, Mr Iteration X. Thank you for the music!

With Patricio Felip collab on the keyboard, both tracks feel tactile, intentional, and refreshingly unpolished.

Dani Labb brings Resfr0m, a broken-beat track that feels like it’s breathing—loose and raw, wrapped in textures that drift between dreamy and distorted. Finally, Veloz y Raptor by Juan Proeliis & Cohema closes this first release with a bouncy, dark cut full of kinetic energy, tape color, and playful detail.

'The Reverend' has even fatter drums pumping down and guttural gospel vocals adding emotional intensity. Gledd remixes with a more light-fingered and jazzy touch and flipside cut 'Gimme Something' offers deep disco and then acid tinged house anthem 'A Little More' rounds out the package.

Parisian label Chuwanaga is thrilled to announce the upcoming release of "The Milky Way", the first EP from the dynamic Milk & Honey duo, comprised of producers Saint-James and Tour-Maubourg. Known for their raw sound reminiscent of the late nineties house sound, Milk & Honey bring a fresh yet nostalgic energy to the scene, blending vintage hardware with modern sensibilities. This EP, is a testament to their musical chemistry and shared passion for the classic deep house. Composed in just two days at Tour-Maubourg's studio in Ixelles, Belgium, "The Milky Way" captures the essence of their creative synergy.

From peak-time club heaters like "Back in the Hood", "Lost and Found" and "Sour" — the latter tinged with a darker UK sound - to deeper, more introspective cuts like "Deeper and Deeper","Venus Effect" and "City Stabs" the EP is a rich and textured journey. It's also a testament to friendship: a story told through syncopated rhythms, hypnotic melodies, and intricate drum programming.

Milk & Honey have previously challenged the deep house scene with releases on Groovence Records, drawing inspiration from legends like Glenn Underground.

Azymuth bassist Alex Malheiros doesn't remember recording this single. It's understandable—the sessions happened over forty years ago, and at the time, Malheiros, Ivan Conti and José Roberto Bertrami were backing countless MPB artists throughout the genre's golden age. As one of Brazil’s most influential groups, Azymuth's story is well known. Vocalist Luisa, however, remains something of an enigma. She recorded this, her one and only single, in 1981 for Carlos Lemos' Piramide Label.

With Luisa’s powerful yet understated vocal, Bertrami's futuristic synths and José Carlos Bigorna's brow-raising tenor sax licks, the stirring early-80s pop ballad "Romantica" should have been a radio hit. On B-side, "Lenha na Fogueira", Azymuth lock into an exceptional samba-funk groove with legendary guitarist Paulinho Guitarra. The record also features backing vocals from the lesser-known vocal group Arco Iris.

Luisa will be reissued for the first time on 7" vinyl and digital on September 5th, 2025, via Far Out Recordings.

In 2024, Kyoto Jazz Massive released their third album as a digital-only project, 30 years after their debut. It now receives the honor of a special vinyl edition, featuring brand-new exclusive mixes by Young Pulse—elevating these already great tracks to even greater heights, for both your ears and your feet.
This marks the first and exclusive collaboration between KJM and Echoes Of A New Dawn Orchestra (aka Jéroboam), the unique Parisian band that has been performing live with KJM across Europe for the past three years. On this occasion, KJM recorded four new tracks with EOANDO, including three original songs ("Power", "Love Wars", and "Impulsive Procession") and a new rendition of “Stand Up”, a previously released composition. To complete the album, you'll also find a stunning cover of KJM’s iconic track "Substream" by EOANDO, as well as their signature piece, “EOANDO's Theme”.
"Power" and "Stand Up" were recorded with Vanessa Freeman, while "Love Wars" features Bembe Segue. This London-based duo has been singing live with KJM since 2004.
"Power" is a crossover anthem, blending jazz-funk and French disco with a gospel touch. Vanessa Freeman’s uplifting lyrics call for collective awareness and energize audiences. "Love Wars" is a live-band interpretation of broken beat with a boogie spirit, enhanced by Bembe Segue’s sharp and spiritual vocals. “EOANDO’s Theme” was specially composed by Echoes Of A New Dawn Orchestra for KJM, capturing the Okino Brothers' love for boogie-funk jams with Brazilian and Balearic influences reminiscent of Azymuth.
“Impulsive Procession” fuses Afro, funk, jazz, fusion, soul, rock, house, and techno—drawing inspiration from several of KJM’s most respected musical heroes. A brand-new version of “Stand Up”, originally released in 2008, was re-recorded live in the studio with EOANDO and fresh vocals by Vanessa Freeman.
The album closes with a reimagined version of “Substream”, one of KJM’s most beloved tracks, covered by EOANDO for the official Tokyo Crossover/Jazz Festival 2023 compilation. This new version was recorded as an organic disco interpretation at Danilo Plessow’s studio in Paris.

Bad Brains is the self-titled debut studio album recorded by American hardcore punk/reggae band Bad Brains. Recorded in 1981 and released on (then) cassette-only label ROIR on February 5, 1982, many fans refer to it as "The Yellow Tape" because of it's yellow packaging. Though Bad Brains had recorded the 16 song Black Dots album in 1979 and the 5-song Omega Sessions EP in 1980, the ROIR cassette was the band's first release of anything longer than a single. The release includes the original liner notes by Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo. This reissue marks the second release in the remaster campaign on the band's own Bad Brains Records imprint with Org Music. In coordination with the band, Org Music has overseen the restoration and remastering of the iconic Bad Brains' recordings. The audio was mastered by Dave Gardner at Infrasonic Mastering.

Dario Bassolino is pianist, producer and composer born in Naples, where he currently resides. With an eclectic taste and an genre-defying musical ability, he has produced for and played alongside alt-R&B vocalist LNDFK, jazz-funk legend Nicola Conte, Early Sounds boss Pellegrino and has collaborated with Nu Genea, Kurtis Rosenwinkel and rapper Pink Siifu to name a few. Inspired by the Brazilian funk greats Hermeto Pascoal and Airto Moreira and their Italian counterparts such as Franco Califano, Lucio Battisti, Panella, Enzo di Domenico and Gennaro D'Auria. Bassolino’s live show has a very organic form and is inspired by jazz, funk and disco improvisation, having extensive experience playing to enthusiastic international audiences as a session musician at prestigious festivals Primavera Sound, Montreux Jazz festival, Dour Festival and We Out Here.

Bassolino's new release is located where the sea begins and the sky ends. Two tracks that carry the horizon drawing a straight line between Naples, Tunisi and Beirut. A thin but tangible line that unites the Mediterranean poles. Hence the concept of "Popoli del Mare", the multiform sound waves intertwine a composition with an incessant rhythm: the Afro contamination of Charif Megarbane finds a fit with the Italian and dreamy harmonies of Bassolino. Baid Alik is a song of love and hope. The sound, purely inspired by the research of Habibi Funk, evokes the memory of an ancestral past shared by Bassolino with the Tunisian singer Marzouk Mejri.
His voice, halfway between proto- rap and melodic, mix perfectly to the disco-cinematic instrumental.

When I played b2b with Sonar's Ghost on my radio show on NTS last year, he played a new tune entitled "Eggs2C" and it sounded really good, so I asked him what the deal with it was. He said that he was working on it with Outrage and that it was going to be part of an EP they were working on, with Future Retro London in mind for releasing it on. It was the first I'd heard of this EP being made for me haha, but I was curious about what the rest of the release sounded like. He sent me the rest of the tunes and I was into them, so here it is!

"Hyperglyph" is the first new album in 11 years from composer/trumpeter/synthesist Rob Mazurek and composer/percussionist Chad Taylor"s long-running Chicago Underground Duo project. Mazurek and Taylor have played music together in a multitude of formations over nearly three decades, including their ongoing partnership in Mazurek"s large-format-skyward-expressionism vehicle Exploding Star Orchestra, in the expanded Chicago Underground Trio, Quartet and Orchestra (all with guitarist Jeff Parker), as well as a plethora of other assemblages. The early albums by the Duo have proven to be embryonic blueprints for the avant-jazz / electronic / indie rock hybridizing of the time, making them majorly important moments in the articulation of the "jazz" dimensionality of the then-burgeoning "post rock" sound. That sound, of course, was being transmitted far and wide due to the success of these groups as well as the Mazurek/Parker project Isotope 217, and the Chicago Underground"s frequently-intersecting collaborators in Tortoise. Just as most of the still-working projects born of that era have evolved, reconfigured, and grown, the Chicago Underground Duo has undergone a number of musical moltings, with the project always in the background of disparate individual aural investigations. The concurrent personal evolutions of Mazurek and Taylor as the Duo project drops off and picks back up makes it a true reflection of their own lives and friendship.

It's spring of 2023 in the North Carolina Piedmont, and songwriter and singer M.C. Taylor - leader of the band Hiss Golden Messenger - is feeling alive. Joyful. Eternal, he might say. For the Grammy-nominated musician, whose albums have traced an internal path through adulthood, fatherhood, spirituality, and depression for well over a decade, this is something new. "The tunes on Jump for Joy were composed in free moments throughout 2022, a year during which Hiss was on the road more or less constantly," explains Taylor. "And perhaps because the post-pandemic energy out in the world felt so chaotic and uncertain, I found myself thinking a lot about the role that music has played in my life and how exactly I ended up in the rarefied position of leading a band and crew all over the globe through dingy graffiti-scrawled green rooms, venerated music halls, dust-blown roadside motels.

Sometimes playing in front of 5,000; sometimes 200. Sleeping sitting up. Laughing until my stomach hurts. Not being able to fall asleep at 3 a.m. in some anonymous bed because my mind is spinning with anxiety or depression or adrenaline, or because my ears are still ringing. Robbing Peter to pay Paul, then robbing Paul to pay Peter back. Over and over again. It's an outlaw life but one, I'm coming to realize, that makes me happy." The songs that make up Jump for Joy - the sharpest and most autobiographical that Taylor has written under the Hiss name - read as a sort of epistolary, postcards between the present-day songwriter and his alias Michael Crow, a teenaged dreamer very much like Taylor himself, who trips his way through the 14 tunes that make up the record. In this way, Jump for Joy is a meditation on a life lived with art, and the ways that our hopes and dreams and decisions bump up against_ and, with a little bit of luck, occasionally merge with real life. "Creating this character became the way that I could explore these vulnerable, tender moments that were so decisive in my life, even if I didn't know it at the time," explains Taylor.

Produced by Taylor and engineered by longtime Hiss compatriot Scott Hirsch over two weeks in the late fall of 2022 at the fabled Sonic Ranch studio in Tornillo, TX, just a short walk from the Mexican border, Jump for Joy dances with joyful, spontaneous energy that feels like a fresh chapter in the Hiss Golden Messenger oeuvre. Taylor is accompanied throughout the album by his crack live band: guitarist Chris Boerner, bassist Alex Bingham, keyboardist Sam Fribush, and drummer Nick Falk, a collection of musicians that have helped make Hiss Golden Messenger's live performances legendary affairs

Side A is a masterclass in breakbeat editing of a b-boy classic sample source. Yes, there are many killer JB edits out in the universe, but when you see that the legendary Black Cash & Theo AKA Thelonious Beats take a turn, you know you gotta cop this mutha on site. Here the edit master bravely returns to one of the main sources of the dawn of hip-hop — JB’s comp “In The Jungle Groove” which was released in 1986 to capitalize on it’s popularity in the genre at the time. The comp is named for a breakdown section that appears in “Give It Up Or Turnit a Loose” which is the workout we have here. JB quiets the band down to handclaps, footstomps & congas played by Johnny Griggs. After he raps a little, JB cues legendary drummer Clyde Stubblefield back in, followed by bassist Bootsy Collins & the rest of the band. JB wasn’t intentionally trying to create a perfect batch of hip-hop samples in the late 60s & early 70s, but he couldn’t have succeeded any better if he had been. This edit may enter well-worn territory but he uniquely delivers an edit that showcases why it inspired so many & still delivers the goods to help you get your party started off right & quickly.

Next up on the flipside we are treated to an edit of “Web” by Hampton Hughes, from his 1974 David Axelrod produced & arranged album “Northern Windows”. Heads will recall it as the core sample for “Off the Record” by Hieroglyphics, from the 1998 LP “3rd Eye Vision”. This jazz-funk burner features a stellar line-up:

Several tracks have a submerged, barely audible layer of almost random sound that serves as a constant (and disturbing) subtext, occasionally erupting into a song. This sonic underworld is all part of Dolby's mechanical wizardry. Rolling Stone magazine awarded The Golden Age of Wireless four stars out of five, calling it ""one of the most impressive debuts"" of 1982. They compared the album's melodicism to the works of Paul McCartney and concluded that ""unlike many synthesizer bands from England, Dolby eschews morbid, droogy drones."" Musician magazine said the album was ""the best damned record to come out of Europe's current fascination with synth-pop. Period."" Theye added, ""Dolby is purely amazing. When NYC-based experimental dance punks Guerilla Toss, active since 2011, were in Vermont recording their new full-length album You're Weird Now, frontwoman Kassie Carlson would prepare what she called 'punk lunch': a communal meal made by raiding the studio fridge for whatever was left and assembling a sandwich from the most random ingredients imaginable. Regularly joining punk lunch were two legends from their own corners of the weird music world: Stephen Malkmus (Pavement, The Jicks) and Trey Anastasio, Phish guitarist and owner of The Barn; the recording studio where Guerilla Toss were making You're Weird Now, with Malkmus in the producer's seat. Engineer Bryce Goggin, who has worked with Malkmus since Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, and Ben Collette, Phish's longtime engineer at The Barn, were also part of the crew. While the idea of the guy from Phish and the guy from Pavement sitting around with Guerilla Toss, congenially assembling sandwiches from random foodstuffs dug up from the depths of a studio fridge, might seem absurd, it also makes total sense. Because really, if there's any band that serves as the natural bridge between slacker punks who saw Pavement way before you did, wild-eyed wooks who've seen Phish more times than you ever will, and even the eccentrics in '90s drip following former GT tourmates Primus-it's Guerilla Toss. A band so imaginative and unapologetically themselves, they're basically the real-life manifestation of a utopian, post-snob world where all musical ideas are worthy of expression and everyone is welcome. You're Weird Now powers this message. Guerilla Toss' fifth album and second for Sub Pop is a hugely creative and joyful statement about the joy of creativity. With You're Weird Now Guerilla Toss reclaim the word "weird" for everyone brave enough to let their freak flag fly and stay true to their artistic vision no matter what-a way riskier act than it's ever given credit for, and one that requires a certain amount of serene self-confidence that it takes time and effort to cultivate and sustain. The record's quick turns and vivid contrasts reflect White's cultural voraciousness. A writer, painter, and sculptor as well as a musician, she gathers materials constantly, always digging for new ideas in every possible form. The films of Claire Denis, the novels of Clarice Lispector, and the memoirs of Eve Babitz all funnel into White's reflection of 21st century disaster capitalism. 8 Tips is also White's first album to have been mixed outside her Providence studio; after recording it herself, she brought tracks to Seth Manchester (Lightning Bolt, Battles, The Body) who gave the album its brawny, unruly charge. "I was interested in making something that serves dually as a self-help book and a chronicle of self-destruction," says White. Overlaying autobiography onto character vignettes, 8 Tips for Full Catastrophe Living wrenches open the idea of apocalypse - an abrupt disaster rained down on uncomplicated innocents - and peers inside at its bursting, devastated particulars. Apocalypse is slow and uneven. Nations falter as do individual people, clinging fast to their old, dilapidated self-preservation strategies. What saved you in the past might destroy you in the future. Flip it around, shake yourself loose, ruin the person you've known yourself to be, and you might get the chance to become something else. "There have been so many end times, many other apocalypses." White says. "People were writing self-help tips, and people were partying." We have survived catastrophe before. Out of the ruins, people made work - art, books, culture. "I was interested in making something that sounds like a self-help book, but it's actually about self-destruction," says White. "In full catastrophe living, you just have to do a bunch of whippets. This album is mostly about doing whippets. I'm not even kidding."

They were simply the most cutting edge, futuristic band in the world, at the centre of a creative scene that defined the 1980s.

This box set features all the band's early classics including "To Cut A Long Story Short," "Chant No. 1," "Muscle Bound," "Paint Me Down," “Instinction” and "She Loved Like Diamond," and presents multiple versions of tracks that trace their development from initial demos to extended 12" club mixes.

London-based psych-folk outfit The Hanging Stars re-release their much-loved debut album Over the Silvery Lake on Crimson Crow. Blending folk pastoralism with swampy 60s Americana, they sound like the missing link between the California desert sun and the grey skies of London Town. The album was recorded between LA, Nashville and Walthamstow, with each of these vastly different places leaving an indelible mark on the songs.

Now signed to the Loose Records label and fronted by London-based songwriter, singer and guitarist Richard Olson (The See See, Eighteenth Day of May), The Hanging Stars are essentially a loose collective of people who weave together a blissed-out psychedelic tapestry. The rest of the core band is made up of Sam Ferman on bass and Paulie Cobra on drums, Horse on pedal steel and Patrick Ralla on banjo, guitar. They jam rather than write and hang out rather than rehearse, harnessing a kind of tipsy euphoria resplendent with luscious arrangements and glorious vocal harmonies.

During 2015, prior to this album’s original release the band released two critically acclaimed singles via The Great Pop Supplement (both of which also appear on the album). “Golden Vanity” was premiered by The Line of Best Fit who said; “you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd just unearthed a rare deep cut from the late 60s/early 70s boom of psychedelia infused Americana” and “The House on The Hill” was described by The Guardian as; "a hazy, desert-dream of a song, nicely sharpened with steely-eyed guitars, Mersey-laced harmonies and just a whiff of the Gun Club”.

There are a number of allusions to nature and the weather on the album, borne in part out of the contrasting surroundings in which it was produced. The band’s fascination with Americana led them to record some of the material Stateside, laying down some of the parts at Battle Tapes Studios in Nashville (Lambchop, Paperhead), as well as at Vision Quest Studios in Los Angeles with Rob Campanella. His work with The Quarter After, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Beachwood Sparks The Tyde, and GospelbeacH was a perfect match to capture their sound and they even had San Franciscan legend Chrystof Certik step in on lead guitar for a couple of tracks.

Following the LA recordings, a trip to the Californian desert provided the core notion of what they wanted to produce - a shard of light that they clung on to whilst recording the rest of the album in the significantly more rain-soaked atmosphere of Walthamstow, London, under the watchful eye of Brian O'Shaughnessy at Bark Studios (The Clientele, Comet Gain). As the band explained at the time: “Ultimately we hope you can hear both the sand and the rain in this record.”

The Hanging Stars place themselves firmly as part of a long folk tradition encompassing European and North American influences – as a continuation rather than a pastiche of these styles. This is the sound of a band really coming in to their own, fully formed and in no doubt of their vision. With Over the Silvery Lake they succeeded in producing a record, which has the country, blues and folk traditions at its heart.

Was tun die Menschen um uns herum? Wie tun sie’s? „Wollen wir das nicht alle die ganze Zeit verstehen?“, fragt Alli Neumann, die mit ihrem dritten Studioalbum methaphorisch als funkelnder Stern auf hartem Asphalt landet. Als „ROQUESTAR“ muss sie sich dort erstmal orientieren. Inspiriert von David Bowies Ziggy Stardust, der fürs Seltsamsein bekannt wurde und sich was traut, auch um gesehen zu werden, blinkt Alli zwischen Auffallen und Anpassung. Die Musikerin bewegt sich längst fließend in dieser Dualität und changiert zwischen den Polen – man will ja doch von allen geliebt werden, oder?! Die Musikerin spielt mit diesem ambivalenten Gedanken, der unlösbar scheint und liefert mit ihrem Album „ROQUESTAR“ 12 Songs, die von genau diesem dringlichen Hunger nach Anerkennung getrieben sind. „Sie erzählen von dem Willen, geliebt zu werden.“ Eine Wahrheit und auch psychosoziale Utopie, vielleicht, „in der sich viele wiederfinden“, meint Alli, und ja doch schambehaftet daherkommt, weil deutlich wird: Wir sind schrecklich abhängig vom Außen, von dem wir so oft die Schnauze voll haben. Mit „Ich kann gar nichts“ schreibt Alli genau dagegen an: Eine selbstironische Hommage an die Imperfektion – wider jeder Erwartung. Geliebt werden wollen, trotz oder gerade wegen ... Rockstar sein, Alli sagt: „everybody’s favorite misfit“. Wie es geht, das mit dem Lieben, das ja auch immer damit einhergeht, wie es um die Liebe zu sich selbst steht, zeigt sich in der Gleichzeitigkeit ihrer Songs: Während Alli in „Vom anderen Stern“ zu Funk eine neue Liebe als Eskapismus zeichnet, „Baby lass dich fallen, um fliegen zu lernen“, erinnert sie in der Grungerock-Ballade „Nie wieder verlieren“ daran, wie giftig es sein kann, sich für einen Menschen aufzugeben. Auf „ROQUESTAR“ scheint alles in Bewegung. Es sind Anstöße, die die Musikerin gibt. Manchmal Anklagen, Aufforderungen, aus denen Sehnsüchte sprechen, nur nie Antworten. Auch weil das nicht zu Alli, der Artist, passen würde, die sich doch so gerne bewegt, wie die Welt, durch die sie fliegt. Durch Genres und Formate – als Musikerin, Schauspielerin, auf Bühnen, auch im Fernsehen, eine Künstlerin, die sich erfährt, (er)lebt, ein bunter Hund, Alli liebt, auch ihre Integrität. Und während die Songs in sich und auch im Miteinander organisch aufgehen, hört man mit etwas Genauigkeit zwei ungewöhnliche Instrumente spielen. Zwei barocke, die Allis „ROQUESTAR“-Modus musikalisch markieren. Zusammen mit ihrer Produzentin Novaa lässt sie Cemberlo und Fagott sich an vorherrschende Synthie- und Kraut-Pop-Sounds schmiegen, während das Fagott von den allermeisten aus der Popmusik verbannt wird. Sich wirklich zeigen, das kann Alli. „Being loved for not being loved“, beschreibt sie selbst, nur immer als Versuch. Bemerkenswert ist, dass die Musikerin bei ihrem Tempo und ihren Kurven der vergangenen Jahre nie Splitter ihres Ichs verloren hat. Während sie also 2025 zwischen den Zeilen über eine „ROQUESTAR“-Identität textet, ist sie es längst: Ein Stern, der vom Himmel auf den Boden einer steinigen Realität fällt, sich umschaut und unaufhörlich probiert. Im ewigen Gerangel zwischen laut und leise, Kraut und Folklore, Protest und Rückzug. Zwischen amüsiert und politisch, Großstadt und Landleben, 80ies und Barock. Alli und ihre Musik strahlen manchmal gleißend hell und manchmal gedimmt hinein in diese Welt, aber leuchten, das tun sie wirklich immer.

Nachdem Ritual aus dem Ruhrgebiet seit 2005 als eine der aktivsten Hardcorebands Europas in jugendlichem Wahnsinn weit über 300 Konzerte in 19 Ländern gespielt und in dieser Zeit drei Alben und 7"-Singles hinterlassen hatten, war die kultisch verehrte Band seit 2012 on hiatus. Nun haben sich Julian Laur de Manos, Deni Pavicic und Philipp Wulf, deren Freundschaft auch ohne Ritual fortbestand, 14 Jahre nach ihrem letzten Album wieder zusammengetan. Mit "Silver Lining" zeigen sie sich in einer ersten Doppelsingle melodisch wie nie zuvor. Die Palette hat sich deutlich erweitert, sind doch trotz starkem Wiedererkennungswert einige auffällige Facetten hinzugekommen. So zeigen sich Ritual hier wiedererweckt als eine Hardcore-Band, die ins Jahr 2025 zu passen scheint.

Selector Dub Narcotic hat uns beim letzten Mal gewarnt: "The Party Is Just Getting Started". Das ist OK, wir wollten nie, dass sie endet. 9 Jahre später beehrt Selector Dub Narcotic uns wieder einmal mit ihrer Präsenz und präsentiert "When Boys Cry" KLP309, eine vier Songs umfassende EP von unvergleichlicher Pracht. "When Boys Cry" ist eine echte Schnulze, die vier Taschentücher eingebracht hat - eins für die Beats, eins für die Reime, eins für die dunkle Schokoladenfrisur und eins für ich weiß nicht was, aber es bringt alle zum Tanzen. Wieder einmal arbeitet Selector Dub Narcotic mit dem Northwest Hip-Hop Produzenten Smoke M2D6 zusammen. Der Titelsong "When Boys Cry" schwebt in einem melancholischen Dunst; "Love Don't Come Around" sinniert über die Muse und alle unbeabsichtigten Konsequenzen; "Excuse Moi" ist eine freche kleine Nummer; "California Trippin'" erinnert uns daran, dass in jedem unserer Unternehmungen Freude steckt. "When Boys Cry" wird von drei digitalen Vorab-Singles begleitet, bevor es als 45rpm 12" EP in den Plattenläden des Planeten erscheint. Perfekt für die nächste gesellige Veranstaltung oder das antisoziale Grübelfest.

"Songs For Other People's Weddings" ist ein Begleitalbum zum gleichnamigen Buch von Jens Lekman und dem preisgekrönten Bestsellerautor David Levithan, das am 5. August 2025 über ABRAMS erscheint. Das Projekt wurde von der überraschenden Nebenkarriere des beliebten schwedischen Künstlers als Hochzeitssänger inspiriert, die zufällig zustande kam, nachdem Fans seinen Song "If You Ever Need A Stranger (To Sing At Your Wedding)" aus dem Jahr 2004 wörtlich nahmen und ihn einluden, auf ihren Hochzeiten aufzutreten. "Songs For Other People's Weddings" ist ein fiktives Werk über J, einen unglücklich verliebten Musiker, der nebenbei als Hochzeitssänger arbeitet. J trifft sich mit Paaren vor ihrem großen Tag, um mehr über die intimen, seltsamen Dinge zu erfahren, die sie zusammengebracht haben, um einen originellen Song zu schreiben, den er ihnen auf ihrer Hochzeit vorträgt. Aber trotz Js Vorliebe, die perfekten Worte für andere zu finden, scheint er nicht in der Lage zu sein, dasselbe für seine eigene Liebe zu seiner Freundin V. zu tun. Lekman bemerkt: "Die Idee, ein erzählerisches Konzeptalbum (eine Rockoper?) zu machen, fühlte sich verboten an. Was für mich normalerweise ein Zeichen dafür ist, dass ich auf dem richtigen Weg bin. Als ich mich mit dem Genre der narrativen Konzeptalben beschäftigte, wurde mir klar, dass eines meiner Lieblingsalben, Frank Sinatras "Watertown", genau das war - eine Platte, die eine chronologische Geschichte über die Länge einer LP erzählte. Da ich nie ein Fan von Musicals oder Rockopern war, diente mir dieses Album als Inspiration. Ich schrieb das Album, während das Buch noch in Arbeit war, und an einigen Stellen begann ich mir vorzustellen, was zwischen den Kapiteln des Buches geschah. Das Buch und das Album waren schließlich miteinander verflochten, gingen aber auch ihre eigenen Wege. Das Buch gab die Struktur der Geschichte vor, aber das Album schlich sich manchmal hinter die Kulissen. Geschichten aus den Liedern fanden ihren Weg in das Buch und umgekehrt." "Songs For Other People's Weddings" folgt der Beziehung von J und V und verändert sich musikalisch, während das Paar durch die Höhen und Tiefen der Liebe navigiert - wobei jede neue Hochzeit ihren eigenen klanglichen Hintergrund bietet. Das Album ist eine orchestrale, romantische Sammlung, die sich zwischen pastoralen Streichern, verträumtem Pop, sanftem Jazz-Saxophon und traurigen House-Beats bewegt. "Die Figur des J kann seine eigenen Emotionen nicht aus seinen Liedern heraushalten, und Jens unterstreicht dies auf eine Weise, die den Hörer immer wieder überrascht", sagt Levithan. "Oft wird er von Matilda Sargren begleitet, die Vs Gefühlen und Gedanken eine Stimme gibt. Ursprünglich sollte sie nur auf den Demos singen, aber als sie anfing, V zu singen, war es keine Frage, dass sie auf dem endgültigen Album zu hören sein würde. Wenn Jens und ich unsere Arbeit getan haben, erzählen der Roman und das Album beide Seiten von Js und Vs Geschichte - und die Spannung entsteht dadurch, wie diese Seiten zusammenpassen." Lekman fügt hinzu: "Auch wenn es in dieser Geschichte um eine Beziehung geht und darum, wie sie sich in den Beziehungen und Hochzeiten anderer widerspiegelt, denke ich, dass es vor allem eine Liebesgeschichte über Musik und ihren Wert in einer Zeit ist, in der sie von Tech-Unternehmen abgewertet und in Inhalte verwandelt wird. Ihre Fähigkeit, zu beruhigen und zu verbinden und ihre Rolle in den Übergangsmomenten unseres Lebens, wie zum Beispiel bei Hochzeiten. Es ist ein Liebeslied an Liebeslieder."

Hinter dem gefeierten Indie-Folk-Künstler FRUIT BATS verbirgt sich der GRAMMY-nominierte Singer/Songwriter Eric D. Johnson aus Nashville, Tennessee. Mit "Baby Man" hat Johnson ein Album geschaffen, das sich von allen anderen FRUIT BATS-Alben abhebt. "Baby Man" setzt sich aus zehn fesselnden Solodarbietungen mit minimalistischer Instrumentierung (Gitarre, Klavier und gelegentlich Synthesizer) und maximaler Ausführung zusammen und Johnsons Raumnutzung auf dem gesamten Album ist oft ebenso bezaubernd wie die Musik und seine stets bemerkenswerte Stimme. Für die Produktion von "Baby Man" hatte sich Johnson wieder mit Thom Monahan zusammengetan. Das Ergebnis dieser Zusammenarbeit ist das intimste Werk, das FRUIT BATS bisher aufgenommen hat. "Baby Man" überrascht mit einigen der rauesten Stücke, die bisher unter dem Pseudonym FRUIT BATS entstanden sind. Monahan hat die Vocals im Mix nach vorne geschoben, was sowohl die Souveränität als auch die Verletzlichkeit jeder Darbietung hervorhebt. Zwischen der Substanz und dem Klang ist das Hören von "Baby Man" eine kraftvolle und gefühlvolle Erfahrung. Das spürt man gleich beim Album-Opener "Let You People Down" und auch beim nachdenklichen Titeltrack. Johnson ehrt den kürzlichen Verlust eines besonderen Freundes in dem wunderschönen "Creature From The Wild", einer zu Herzen gehenden Hommage, mit der sich leidenschaftliche Hundeliebhaber sofort identifizieren werden. Das philosophische "Building A Cathedral" stellt die Frage, was einem im Leben wirklich wichtig ist und was nicht, während der letzte Song "Year Of The Crow" mit einer stimmungsvollen, bluesigen Klaviereinleitung daherkommt und das Album schmerzhaft und gefühlvoll abschließt. Der Song ist ein passendes Finale eines bemerkenswerten Albums eines geliebten und verehrten Künstlers, der weiterhin Musik konzipiert, Emotionen vermittelt und Verbindungen auf sinnvolle Weise herstellt. "Baby Man" ist der Nachfolger des von der Kritik hochgelobten Albums "A River Running to Your Heart" aus dem Jahr 2023. pen·ti·men·to - eine sichtbare Spur früherer Malerei unter einer oder mehreren Farbschichten auf einer Leinwand - frühes 20. Jahrhundert: aus dem Italienischen, wörtlich "Reue". Auf ihrem ersten Album seit "Still Life" (2022) bewegt sich Carson McHone an der Grenze ihrer musikalischen Vorstellungskraft und kanalisiert so unterschiedliche und überraschende Einflüsse wie Gitarrenrock, pastoralen Folk, Poesie, Feldaufnahmen, visuelle Kunst, Erinnerung, Familie und Landschaft zu ihrem bisher tiefgründigsten Werk. "Pentimento" ist ein kühnes und lohnendes Album. Es ist auch eine Abrechnung: Wie können Liebe und Schönheit in der Gegenwart von Brutalität existieren? Beunruhigend. Dissonant. Diese "Artefakte" des Schreibens/Lebens gaben Aufschluss darüber, was schließlich zum Material für diese Aufnahmen wurde. Später, am Meer und während des ersten Schnees der Saison, kam eine besondere Gruppe von Musikern zusammen, um das Album zum Leben zu erwecken. Während die Hälfte der Songs nach einem strengen "Plan" aufgebaut wurde, kam die andere Hälfte bei dieser Gelegenheit zum ersten Mal zusammen und wurde an Ort und Stelle geprobt und live eingespielt. Über sechs Tage hinweg wurde alles auf einem 8-Spur-Bandgerät aufgenommen, einschließlich zufälliger Rückkopplungen, Bassdröhnen und spontanem Gelächter." - Carson McHone

Star Feminine Band, hardest working women in Beninese show business, are releasing their third album on Born Bad, who went all out for their first. Some get malaria at the sight of that sticky world label : rest assured, the world is all they deserve after nine years of hard work. These eight young women, from a village that even Beninese can't quite place, started out in hard mode.

They had to convince themselves that it was worth a shot, but also their family, their village and an entire continent.

André Balaguemon, composer, manager and lyricist, does a lot, while remaining in the background. He put the group together, included his three daughters, houses everyone with his wife Edwige who also manages dances and costumes. He gave them a musical training, and created the framework for them to continue school while rehearsing hard. From local heroes to UNICEF ambassadors, the group has made it. The very existence of this new album is a testament to the perseverance of Grâce, Anne, Urrice, Bénie, Angélique, Sandrine, Julienne and Ashley. The personnel of this family affair has changed a bit : two new women have joined the group, which conquered bigger stages (Glastonbury in the summer, the X-mas BBC special).



This new album brings simple joys : watching them grow from Benin's first girl band to a band in its own right. And never forgetting why they took to the stage in the first place. Star Feminine Band makes straightforward music, taking no detours to express what's missing in the country. When Grâce advocates for kids getting a chance to get to school it's because there's nothing else more important to say that day. Teachers, don’t leave the kids alone, after all.



As they said on their first album, « music is our job », let them be that : musicians having a lot of fun on this album. It wanders through the vast territory of the countless West African styles. They even make a quick foray into reggae to talk about marriage (with a little rap thrown in), and interweave their voices in multiple languages (Waama, Ditamari, Bariba, Fon, Yoruba). And boy do they have hits. To each is own, but “L'enfant c'est un don de Dieu » (Child is god’s gift) is a mighty steamroller, methodically smoothing out the ground for dancing together to its final chorus, singing « debout-les-en-fants / get up, kids ! » along.



Smoother than the first two albums, supported by fine arrangements, ambitious keyboard parts and more complex vocal harmonies without losing any of their spontaneity, this third opus quietly adds to Benin's musical heritage. As they make clear in « Jusqu'au bout du monde », clever little number that we can already hear swelling up on stage: « oui, c’est Star Feminine Band qui a gagné - o / Star Feminine Band won».

Gothenburg/Malmö-based post rock power trio Barrens return with Corpse Lights, the band's second full-length release following their critically-acclaimed 2020 debut Penumbra. Black Truffle is thrilled to present the first ever solo Donso n’goni recording from octogenarian Swedish multi-instrumentalist Christer Bothén. Active in the Swedish jazz and improvisation scene since the 1970s, often heard on bass clarinet, Bothén travelled to Mali in 1971, eventually making his way to the Wassoulou region in the country’s south where he encountered the Donso n’goni, the sacred harp of the hunter caste of Wassoulou society. Though playing the instrument has traditionally been restricted to those who belong to the hunters’ brotherhood, Bothén found an enthusiastic teacher in Brouema Dobia, who, after many months of intensive one-on-one lessons, gave Bothén his blessing to play the instrument both traditionally and in his own style. Returning to Sweden, he would go on to pass on what he had learned to Don Cherry and play the Donso n’goni in a wide variety of inventive settings, including the driving Afro-jazz-fusion of his Trancedance (reissued as BT118).

The seven pieces of Christer Bothén Donso n’goni offer up a stunning showcase of Bothén’s work on this remarkable instrument, heard entirely unaccompanied, except for the final piece where he is joined on a second Donso n’goni by his student and collaborator, the virtuoso bassist Kansan/Torbjorn Zetterberg, and Marianne N’Lemvo Linden on the metal Karanjang scraper. Recorded in three sessions in Stockholm between 2019 and 2023 in richly detailed high fidelity, the instrument’s buzzing, sonorous bass strings make an immediate, overwhelming sonic impression. Hyper-focused on hypnotically repeating pentatonic patterns, the seven pieces are at once relentlessly single-minded and endlessly rich in subtle variations. The concentrated listening environment turns small details, such as the deployment of the instrument’s segesege rattle on two of the pieces, into major events. Six of the seven pieces are traditional, with Bothén contributing the remaining ‘La Baraka’, but the line between tradition and the individual talent is imaginary here: as Bothén explained in a recent interview with The Wire’s Clive Bell, ‘I play traditional and untraditional, and I play the music forward and backward’. While the traditional Wassoulou pieces provide the rhythmic and harmonic elements, Bothén’s individuality as a performer is alive in every moment, felt acutely in boundless variations of attack, improvisational flourishes, and unexpected accelerations and decelerations. Captured entirely live and bristling with spontaneity, this music is undeniably the product of almost half a decade of Bothén’s devotion to the Donso n’goni and its traditional music.

Accompanied by detailed new liner notes by Bothén and stunning colour photos from his time in Mali, Christer Bothén Donso n’goni is a stunning document of a remarkable instrument, played with an almost spiritual intensity by one of contemporary music’s great explorers.

Teresa Rotschopf, a musician and composer from Vienna, presents her second solo album, »Currents and Orders« – a radical, delicate, yet grandiose sonic journey between experimental pop, new music, and improvised composition. The album will be presented live on August 27 as part of the »Pop-Kultur« festival (silent green, Berlin) and at the »ORF RadioKulturhaus« (Vienna) on 12 September.

»Currents and Orders« was recorded in an unusual location: a stalactite cave in Styria, Austria. Together with a small group of musicians (Maria Gstättner: bassoon, contraforte; Alex Kranabetter: tuba, trumpet, French horn; Patrick Dunst: saxophone, duduk; Florian Klinger: marimba, vibraphone, glockenspiel, cymbals, gong, stalactite; Patrick Pulsinger: gong, stalactite; Ulrich Schleicher: gong) and in co-production with Patrick Pulsinger, Rotschopf recorded the album in June 2023 – deep underground, far from daylight, but all the closer to archaic sounds and resonances.

The cave becomes not only an acoustic stage, but also a symbolic space of memory, retreat, and transformation. The album comprises four pieces – including two large-scale tracks:
- the opening, mantra-like title track »Currents and Orders« (over 10 minutes)
- the final, free-jazz, expressive »I Open My Gates (for You)« (over 20 minutes)

With a minimalist structure, choral voices, vibraphone, percussion, and wind instruments, fragile yet powerful soundscapes emerge, whose spatial depth is also palpable through the cave reverberation.

Rotschopf first developed the desire to record in a cave in the summer of 2022. What began as a visual and sonic image became a concrete project – supported by the Austrian Cave Association. In June 2023, Rotschopf and her musicians spent three days in a cave in the Styrian forest. Almost a kilometer of cable was laid, and equipment and instruments were carried deep underground. Rotschopf describes the recording situation as a kind of return to herself: »I descended into this cave, as if I could descend into myself, into my own womb ... What we did in the cave could just as easily be called ›recording music,‹ but it could also be called ›remembering‹ – remembering the earth, the cave, and humanity.«

»Currents and Orders« is an album like a ritual: haunting, atmospheric, bold in its form, and deeply rooted in both physical and emotional space. Music that takes its time, uses space, and pushes boundaries.

The pre-release single »O Please My Soul (Rest On My Back)« (release: July 17, 2025) is accompanied by a striking music video shot by Antoinette Zwirchmayr on 16mm film: Teresa Rotschopf holds a real owl in her hand – an image that is as magical as it is enigmatic.

Label owner Martin Hossbach read a review of Rotschopf's first solo album, »Messiah,« in 2018 and contacted the artist. Joint releases followed, including a drone album on the sub-label Martin Hossbach Score and a Pet Shop Boys cover version on Martin Hossbach Cover.

Mit minimalistischer Struktur, Chorstimmen, Vibraphon, Schlag- und Blasinstrumenten entstehen fragile und zugleich mächtige Klangwelten, deren räumliche Tiefe auch durch den Höhlenhall spürbar wird.

Der Wunsch, in einer Höhle aufzunehmen, kam Rotschopf im Sommer 2022. Was als visuelles und klangliches Bild begann, wurde zu einem konkreten Vorhaben – unterstützt vom Österreichischen Höhlenverein. Im Juni 2023 begab sich Rotschopf mit ihren Musiker:innen drei Tage lang in eine Höhle im steirischen Wald. Fast ein Kilometer Kabel wurde verlegt, Equipment und Instrumente tief unter die Erde getragen. Rotschopf beschreibt die Aufnahmesituation als eine Art Rückkehr in sich selbst: »Ich stieg in diese Höhle hinab, so als ob ich in mich selbst hinabsteigen könnte, in meinen eigenen Schoß [...] Was wir in der Höhle taten, könnte man ›Musik aufnehmen‹ nennen, genauso gut aber auch ›Erinnern‹ – Erinnern von Erde, Höhle und Menschsein.«

Currents and Orders ist ein Album wie ein Ritual: eindringlich, atmosphärisch, mutig in der Form und tief verwurzelt im physischen wie emotionalen Raum. Musik, die sich Zeit nimmt, Raum nutzt und Grenzen sprengt.

Artist and multi-instrumentalist Flaer embraces the search for quiet miracles on first full-length LP Translations.

In 2023, Realf Heygate - who makes music as Flaer - released his debut mini-album Preludes, composed on his mother’s piano and his childhood cello.Returning to ODDA for his debut full-length album, Heygate is now looking in another direction. A record that embraces transition and movement, Translations is in many ways more internal, less rooted to a single place and reflective of the process of laying new foundations in Cornwall.

Like Preludes, Translations is coloured with found sounds and field recordings, from the starlings which can be heard singing through the open window of his studio, to the brittle recordings of his mother, who was a linguist, learning Spanish on a set of language tapes. In both cases, Heygate embraced the translations and memories inherent to the sounds.

“When I digitised my mother’s tapes, they warped and stuttered in a very similar way to the starling’s song,” he explains. “They had this uncanny rhythm and pulse that I couldn’t quite decode, but was saying something." These decayed transmissions hint at loss, resisting clarity in favour of the ineffable.

Translations is also a record of ambiguities and in-betweens, suggested by the double meaning of the album’s opening track ‘Entre’. At once intricate and expansive, threaded with birdsong and acoustic guitar motifs, this and ‘Starling Descends’ (a reference to Vaughan Williams’ ‘The Lark Ascending’) act as a bridge away from the pastoral themes of Preludes towards a more assertive sound. At times intimate in its textured instrumentation and at others more overtly grand in orchestration, reflecting awider palette of influences.

“Flaer began in many ways when I picked up my mother’s instruments, seeking a form of reconnection. Where words evaded me, they became the tools through which I found a language for grief – and above all, for love.”

Recorded between 2023 and 2025 – what Heygate calls “A gradual process of sowing and harvesting ideas rather than a single intense creative period” - each track follows a rhythm similar to the small maquettes and sculptures he has been working on in his visual practice, whereby structures and melodies form intuitively in moments that are as rare as they are fleeting.

“It's that feeling of searching that I really enjoy,” Heygate continues. “I never know what the destination of the composition is going to be, and I never really find what it is."

Translations is released on limited edition off-white vinyl LP (500 copies worldwide) with one of five signed and numbered handmade risograph prints. It's also available as standard black vinyl LP and digitally.

Backspin's new release comes from Obscure Shape, delivering a deep and versatile techno EP that lives up to its title: 'Zwei Gesichter' (German for 'Two Faces'). Across five tracks, the EP explores the tension between raw force and emotional depth, marrying the label's Hardgroove roots with a more introspective edge.

The A-side presents Obscure Shape's first face: It opens with 'Zwei Seiten', a no-frills banger that hits with immediacy and drive. With the 'Zwei Gesichter' EP, Obscure Shape crafts a powerful narrative through groove, form and feeling, perfectly aligned with Backspin's evolving reinterpretation of early 2000s techno.

Ofra Haza is the eponymous 1997 album by Israeli singer Ofra Haza. It was produced by Frank Peterson (Enigma, Gregorian) and features

Pino Palladino on the bass guitar. The album was recorded in Hamburg and at Abbey Road Studios in London and contains an updated version of the

hit song "Im Nin' Alu". It also features the singles "Show Me" and "Give Me a Sign".

This was Ofra Haza's final full-length studio album before her passing in 2000.

Unmistakable are the sonic experiments of Spanish alchemist ORBE; with this fresh release on Token. ORBE's iconically viscous textures and impactful percussion weasel their way into 'Ascender' for a deeper release on Kr!z's label. Thick, brooding atmospheres drive these tracks into stories of pursuit and escape throughout its four tracks.

A slick, pulsating low end in 'Flashback' stands out as a first impression for an imposing EP. Electric leads zip by for maximum psychosis; he's known for his uncompromising dissonance and drive. A staple of the Spanish scene, ORBE bites down hard on deep and hypnotic techno to resonate through concrete warehouses. This jagged edge to club music continues through 'W9Y' - a more drum-forward cut with noisy transitions and breathable synthwork. Rolling through shifting hats, the producer brings boiling tension through minimal arrangement and the weight of his sound design - a skillset only the most seasoned artists can claim. To close things out, 'Break Nation' does just that - cutting off the traditional four/four rhythm and instead presenting itself as a bass stepper. With ORBE's classic unison packed synths, this dweller presents a whole other perspective on 'Ascender'. A hybrid of influences and yet still destined for the techno dancefloor, this breath of fresh air serves as deep dive into the subconscious for an eyes-closed experience.

Legendary and pioneering Träd, Gräs och Stenar is considered Sweden's oldest rock band to introduce psychedelic underground music. This long-awaited "Green Album" from 1970 marks their very first release under the name Träd, Gräs och Stenar. Now, for the first time since its original release, it's being reissued on vinyl-complete with rare photos, an in-depth story, and a 30x60 cm poster. Decades later, the band continues to perform under the name TRÄDEN, now with only one original member. He is joined by a new generation of acclaimed musicians, who are keeping the spirit alive and carrying the sounds and legacy of Träd, Gräs och Stenar into the future.

Tender / Wading zeigt Matthew Sage, alias M. Sage, in den Ausläufern und Weiden Colorados, wo er schreibt, aufnimmt und zu einem Stück seiner Heimat und Identität zurückkehrt, wobei ein Akt der Fürsorge den nächsten nach sich zieht. Das Album, das hauptsächlich auf Klavier und Klarinette aufgebaut ist und dann mit Gitarre, modularem Synthesizer, Percussion und Feldaufnahmen aus der Umgebung seines Zuhauses verziert wurde, ist eine weitreichende, ruhige Vision von Vitalität, radikaler Sanftheit und dem beruhigenden Gefühl, nach Hause zu kommen, auch wenn sich das Zuhause verändert hat. Seit den frühen 2010er Jahren hat Sage ein eigenwilliges Musikrepertoire zusammengestellt, das sich in verschiedene Klangrichtungen erstreckt, sich in Veröffentlichungen auf Geographic North, Orange Milk und Moon Glyph manifestiert und sowohl kritische Aufmerksamkeit als auch eine treue Zuhörerschaft für jede neue Wendung erlangt hat. 2023 debütierte Sage bei RVNG Intl. mit Paradise Crick, das zeitgleich mit seiner laufenden Arbeit im improvisierten Ambient-Jazz-Quartett Fuubutsushi erschien. Nun präsentiert er sein nächstes Soloalbum und seine neue Richtung. Tender / Wading folgt auf Sages Rückkehr nach Colorado nach fast einem Jahrzehnt in Chicago, wo er nun mit seiner jungen Familie dreißig Meilen außerhalb seiner Heimatstadt ein paar Hektar verwildertes Land bewirtschaftet. In einem ganzheitlichen Kontrast zu Cricks synthetischer Klangwelt schafft Sage Kunst aus dem Akt des Pflegens neuen Wachstums, hinterfragt Konstrukte des häuslichen Lebens und versteht die Spuren seines früheren Selbst durch die schmutzverschmierte, schweißvernebelte Linse der Gegenwart. Das Ergebnis ist sein bisher autobiografischstes Material, geprägt von Zeit und Veränderungen in der Wahrnehmung sowie bedeutungsvollen Details aus Sages psychischer Suche. Sage vergleicht das Gefühl, verschiedene Versionen von sich selbst zu sehen, mit der berühmten Hase-Ente-Theorie des Philosophen Ludwig Wittgenstein. ,Es ist dieselbe Zeichnung, aber je nachdem, wer man ist, wo man ist und wann man ist, sehen manche Menschen einen Hasen und manche eine Ente oder beides", erklärt Sage. Hier sind das Subjekt und der Betrachter, zurück in vertrauten Landschaften, als Partner und Elternteil, der Gestrüpp zurückschneidet, gedemütigt von invasiven Pflanzen, Schädlingsbefall und verdichtetem Lehmboden, seine Prioritäten haben sich grundlegend geändert. Und doch ist auch dieses andere Ich da: ein gewiefter Akademiker, der oft in Memes denkt und das Ziehen seines Handys in der Hosentasche spürt. ,In diesem Album geht es darum, diese Wahrnehmungsverschiebungen zu ergründen und ihnen Raum zu geben, beides zu tun: hüpfen und quaken." Es ist ein inneres Kind, das Sages intermediale Praxis in seinem Atelier leitet, einer Scheune, die nach dem großen Umzug im Jahr 2022 im Rahmen einer hausweiten DIY-Renovierung umgebaut wurde. Im Inneren werden Gedichte zu Zeichnungen, zu Skulpturen im Hinterhof und darüber hinaus, und alberne Ausflüge in den Vogelgesang oder die Freude an der Herausforderung, Klarinette zu lernen, weichen ernsthafter Musik. ,Ich glaube, ich habe entdeckt, dass es diese Linien gibt, die alles miteinander verbinden", sagt er. ,Und dieses Album ist voller hartnäckigem Optimismus und Hoffnung, aber auch der Bewusstheit, dass wir uns in einer späten Phase befinden, und dem Versuch, mit der Rhetorik dieser Phase umzugehen." Für Tender / Wading setzt Sage einen unverwechselbaren Sound ein: eine pastorale Art von Folk Kosmiche, kontemplativer elektroakustischer Barn Jazz für die Front Range, voller blasser Puddle Blues und rostigen Oil Drum Reds. Die meisten Songs entstanden auf einem 1910er Hamilton-Klavier, das kurioserweise in Chicago gebaut, von den Vorbesitzern zurückgelassen und von Mäusen bewohnt worden war. Die zufällige Begegnung mit dem Instrument fühlte sich kosmisch an, nicht nur wegen seiner Verbindung zur Windy City, sondern auch wegen Sages sich weiterentwickelnder Herangehensweise an das Songwriting nach Fuubutsushi. Er fühlt sich hinter den Tasten wohler und kehrt zurück zum Schlagzeug (seiner Jugendliebe). In einem passenden Raum für Holzblasinstrumente umarmt er das Elementare und Absichtliche und verleiht der Musik von Anfang an mehr strukturelles Gewicht und Wärme. Tender's M. Sage verbindet die Studioexperimente und Improvisationen seiner Vergangenheit mit einem geschärften Ohr für melodische Phrasierungen und Akkordwechsel und hat seine übliche Fülle an Demos auf neun finale Stücke reduziert. Seine charakteristischen Weltbilder bleiben erhalten, von Holzhauskröten, die in statischer Elektrizität schwimmen, über raschelndes Gras und Regen, der in die Dachrinnen plätschert, bis hin zu walzenden Sternbildern im Mondlicht. Während Cricks Universum aus magischem Realismus und digitaler Fantasie entstanden ist, greift Tender / Wading direkter auf menschliche Erfahrungen zurück. Er weist schnell Vorwürfe zurück, es handele sich um ein hochkonzeptionelles Album: ,Ich mache einfach die Musik, die ich selbst gerne in meinen Kopfhörern hören würde, während ich Unkraut jäte oder so." Es könnte beides sein, wie der Hase und die Ente behaupten würden: zutiefst persönlich und abstrakt, eine faszinierende und natürliche Wendung eines experimentellen Künstlers des 21. Jahrhunderts, dessen Vermächtnis sich in Echtzeit weiterentwickelt und wächst.

Mit "Smile" liefern Rong Kong Koma ihr drittes Album, und es ist ihr kompromisslosestes. Wo die Vorgänger noch verspielte Umwege nahmen, geht es jetzt direkt durch die Wand. Der Sound ist rau, kantig und voll auf die Fresse. Mit mehr Schmutz als Glanz. Die Band stampft mal wie ein zorniges Metronom, schaltet dann in Reggaeton-Grooves oder fällt in sich zusammen, wenn sich plötzlich eine zerbrechliche Ballade in den Raum stellt. Was glauben die eigentlich, wer sie sind? Die Produktion ist trocken und aggressiv, das Songwriting unberechenbar und bissig. Auch textlich bleibt es unbequem: Absurder Humor trifft auf präzise Alltagsbeobachtungen und wütende Spitzen gegen den Rechtsruck, toxische Männlichkeit und die gepflegte Lethargie der Mitte. "Smile" ist keine einfache Platte. Aber eine zwingende. Zwischen Punk, Indie und einer gesunden Portion Wahnsinn, der große Gefühle kennt, aber keine Pose braucht.
