Limited orange vinyl. We've all heard the axiom, "if you ignore it, maybe it'll go away." That goes double for a lot of people who wish to apply that saying to rap music. But when it comes to the West Coast "gangsta rapper" genre made popular by the likes of NWA, Eazy E, Ice-T and his Rhyme Syndicate cohort, King Tee, the truth is hard to ignore. King Tee aligns producer DJ Pooh on this Bass EP consisting of tracks recorded in 1987. They're joined by The Compton Posse that includes the late Mixmaster Spade and J-Ro from Tha Alkaholiks. This EP sharpens the skillful word play King Tee made famous on his debut album Act A Fool. From song to song, this EP has a superior sheen, a tightness and cohesiveness between rhyme and music. Born in Los Angeles and now a resident of the infamous West Coast rap capital, Compton, California, King Tee truly is a product of the streets. He openly admits to running with gangs in his youth, causing his mother endless embarrassment and frustration. So much so that, in a desperate attempt to turn his life around, she turned King Tee into the authorities when she discovered him stealing from her. Once out of jail, King Tee ran of to Houston, Texas. Trouble is that he was underage atthe time, so his mother again had King Tee locked up in a juvenile camp. When King Tee finally realized why his mother did what she did, he decided to turn his life around by dedicating himself to music. He listened obsessively to the radio and chose to become a DJ. When King Tee was released from juvenile camp he secured a mixing gig at KSU and then KYOK in Houston. Between station gigs he handled the mix at various venues and clubs. After gaining the necessary experience behind the tables, King Tee moved back to Los Angeles and hooked up with Ice-T. In rapid succession, King Tee met Du Pooh who enlisted him into his rap group (after King Tee bugged Pooh for months), then Pooh introduced Tee to DJ Unknown with whom he made several 12" records for the Techno Hop labelwhich is now released on this EP for the first time since then. Ice-T's influence brought Rhyme Syndicate Management's Jorge Hinojosa into the picture. King Tee eventually signed with Hinojosa who then secured a contract with Capitol Records for King Tee. The result was 1988's Act A Fool.

Hailing from Brittany, historical center of France's industrial scene and in close proximity to Belgium's infamous rave and EBM innovations, Ekors set out to deliberately blacken and burn the sophisticated sounds emanating from Paris. With releases on Amsterdam's harsh Leyla imprint, fellow French hardcore iconoclast Umwelt's Flesh or Die, and JoeFarr's User Experience, the trio undoubtedly made their name in their lonely redoubt in the timberland, and Rant & Rave is honored to host their theme EP, Forest Killers, as our fifth release.

'Woodchip' conjures nightmares of dead bodies run through a woodchipper rather than more pastoral scenes, its distorted kicks, bone-crushing bass and blasted-apart leads chopping air and anyone unlucky enough to stand in its way. Title track 'Forest Killers' is murderous, the lurching breakbeat and shrapnel percussion approaching like axe falls ever closer until the horror score melody enters, then accelerating frantically as the killers close in. 'Evil Sapp' only seems subdued in comparison, its hammering techno pulse providing scant breathing room as industrial machinery fells nearby trees. Self-explanatory 'Chainsaw Requiem' ups the discomfort as the titular tool buzzes overhead, more Texas Chainsaw Massacre than weekend warrior woodpile work. Amidst squalling leads, ricocheting percussion, fearful blasts of noise, and pounding bass and kicks, Ekors escort us out of the haunted wood, sighs of relief and evil laughs joining in chorus.

Few artists have done as much as Heinrich Dressel to rekindle the genre of soundtracks. Even fewer are as capable as the Italian at writing such silver screen scores. Yet, Valerio Lombardozzi is much more than just one style. He has shown this time and time again, doing so once more with The Obscure Cities. Works of fiction, rather than film, are the fount of inspiration with tracks drawing on the likes of J.G. Ballard, Francois Schuiten, Benoit Peeters and Valerio Mattioli. The listener is transported to worlds of Dressel’s own making, landscapes of melody, textures of bass punctuated by drums. “Galatograd” opens. From understated beginnings, the track expands into a symphony of strings as columns of warmth descend. Tempos rise for “Eden Olympia”. A different tone is set. Juddering arpeggios and clean snares are elevated by bright and hopeful keys that sparkle with an enthusiasm and innocence. Deep unctuous bass gives way to gliding notes for “Remoria”. A piece where melodies and memories melt in the morning dawn. “Mylos” is the last visit of the EP. Delicate, almost fragile, notes are buttressed by drum patterns in this hazy dreamlike finale.

Melvin Davis' 'Wedding Bells' 45er, erstmals 1964 auf dem Label Ke Ke in Detroit veröffentlicht, war ein frühes Dave Hamilton-Projekt, für das er mit Melvin zusammenarbeitete. Die B-Seite 'It's No News' besticht mit amüsantem Text über einem tanzfreundlichen Rhythmus.

Viktoria Tolstoys ACT-Debütalbum »Shining On You« aus dem Jahr 2004 markiert aus heutiger Sicht einen wichtigen Moment in der Erfolgsgeschichte populärer Jazzstimmen aus Skandinavien. Die Musik für die Aufnahme schrieb Esbjörn Svensson, der zusammen mit Dan Berglund und Magnus Öström die Kern-Band bindet, welche wenig später als e.s.t. weltberühmt wurde. Das von Nils Landgren produzierte Album ist auch ein Treffen vieler Mitglieder der damals noch jungen ACT Family of Artists, die als Gäste an der Session teilnahmen.

Genau 20 Jahre später hat Viktoria Tolstoy für »Stealing Moments« die Idee des »familiären« Musikzierens wieder aufgegriffen. Die Kompositionen des Albums stammen von einer ganzen Reihe aktueller ACT Künstler, von denen viele auch schon an »Shining on You« beteiligt waren. Und auch Esbjörn Svensson ist auf besondere Art am Album beteiligt: Von ihm stammt die Instrumentalkomposition »Hands Off«, für welche seine Frau Eva nun einen Text verfasst hat. Dazu kommen Kompositionen, die langjährige Freunde und Weggefährten wie Nils Landgren, Ida Sand, Wolfgang Haffner, Cæcilie Norby, Lars Danielsson, Iiro Rantala und Jan Lundgren eigens für Viktoria Tolstoy und ihre Stimme geschrieben haben.

Dazu kommt eine Mischung aus Energie und Leichtigkeit, die Viktoria Tolstoy als Person ausmacht und die sich durch die Musik auf die Zuhörer überträgt. Gwendoline werden nicht gern in Schubladen gesteckt. Wir tun es dennoch: Nu Wave with wit, Synthwave with edge, Postpunk with Pop. Als wenn Benjamin Biolay Molchat Doma vorstehen würde, ,I'm Not In Love" (Chrystal Castles) auf ,Anyway" (OTO) trifft, Ladytron mit DAF in den Urlaub fahren würden. Seit 2017 verfolgt das social medial scheue Duo Micka (a.k.a. Mikoune) und Pierre (a.k.a. Daniel) im eher verborgenen ihre Cold Wave-Vision. Das Debut wurde in reinster DIY-Manier zu Hause im Keller aufgenommen und ohne Umschweife in kurzer Zeit produziert. Lange Zeit gab es kaum was zu Gwendoline zu googlen, aber an den Kennnern ist es natürlich nicht vorbeigegangen. Das spanische Label Dead Wax Records fand das so super, veröffentlichte digital und sehr limitiert auf Vinyl, ein Reissue gab's auf bandeigenem Label 2022. Nun sind sie bei Born Bad gelandet und dabei in bester Gesellschaft mit Vox Low, Frustration und Bracco. Was macht Gwendoline einzigartig? Sicherlich ihre Wut und gleichzeitige Zurückhaltung, die sie mit Selbstkritik, Ironie und Humor vermischen, was sich in den Texten wie auch im Sound wiederspiegelt. The Total Space sees Boa Morte edge deeper into the woods of ambient, drone and synthesised sound with little to guide them but their innate melodic compass and instinct for unorthodox song. Daniel Presley, the perma-nomadic Texan producer, flew in to safeguard the Boa Morte fundamentals: emotive yet unsentimental vocals; a disquieting ease with space and silence; percussive interventions on drum-shell, tom-rim and cymbal-cup; an aversion to rhythm guitar; harmonies that add rather than dilute personality, and a bloody-minded patience when it comes to pacing.

Texas based producer Ben Hixon has been garnering a wide following with his clever old-skool influenced house tracks. The feature track 'ND Fresh', spreads its' wings over the entire A-side. This house builder has the ability to tear the roof of the party. A strong, tribal and urban builder that creates a scene on the dancefloor. With his background as a multi-instrumentalist and recording engineer, you get an interesting and unique approach on rhythm within the house genre. The two B-sides offer up some great material as well. 'As You' is a soulful stunner that gives off strong deep Chicago vibes. 'I Smoke!!' is the banger of the bunch that will send any party into overdrive. It's great to see and hear someone is making such strong house music from the south there in America. Top Notch!

Soul Jazz Records’ new 10th anniversary edition of their long-out-of-print Punk 45: There Is No Such Thing As Society. This is a one-off limited-edition heavyweight specialedition cyan coloured vinyl pressing + download code. The album charts the rise of underground punk and post-punk in the UK from 1977-81. This album is fully remastered and relicensed and includes five new tracks from 23 Skidoo, Notsensibles, Pretty Boy Floyd, The Astronauts and The Impossible Dreamers.

Eine Art Unbeschwertheit, allerdings mit melancholischem Rückgrat, ist die treibende Kraft hinter dem Song, auf dem Atlanta-Multikünstler Lil Yachty zu hören ist.

First vinyl edition of the album »Rhetorical Islands«, originally released in 2012 as a limited-edition CD on Ielasi's Senufo Editions label. The album’s ten tracks have neither titles nor accompanying text, standing for themselves as what Ielasi himself has called ›isolated sound worlds.‹ They are nonetheless unparalleled in their plasticity, acoustic events with a rare degree of tangibility. Ielasi evokes physical objects, some of which seem to have been constructed out of paper and cardboard, others based on a mechanics of elastic materials. Felix Machtelinckx is a singer, composer, producer and lyricist from Belgium. Featuring an array of film scores, dance soundtracks, pop, folk and electronic music, Felix's music resonates with a familiar, almost nostalgic patina, applied with a distinctly crooked touch. Through artistic collaboration, coaching and production, Felix has cut a dash in the pop and indie cult scenes of Belgium, especially with his band Tin Fingers, who are feted as one of the most promising indie acts of the moment. Night Scenes, Felix’s solo debut is, in contrast to his other work, more humble and less traditional, roughly hewn from a series of ambient soundscapes, earthy textures and playful structures. Felix’s voice, normally the flagship of his music, becomes more of a distant memory, an indistinct emotion feathered throughout the music. Many lyrics are improvised, sometimes unintelligible, conjuring haunted, uncertain undertones. Similarly, the album is innately peripatetic to the core, being created, written and recorded in Lithuania, Belgium, France, mastered in the US, and finally released in the UK. In the first instance, some of the tracks were created for the contemporary dance piece Doggy Rugburn by Brandon Lagaert of Kaiho and Peeping Tom; others were created enigmatically for a film that never surfaced; while the remainder are the product of more personal work and research. As Felix began to collect and review these disparate parts, the concept of a unified album began to evolve. With 'night' featuring as a suitably dark leitmotif, or backdrop to a series of emotionally fraught 'scenes', each track depicts a form of trauma, locked within the confines of the mind. Felix observes: "Imagine yourself in a dusty old room unable to sleep. Emotions, fears and other demons haunt your mind. This in-between state makes your mind reach for other worlds. This is Night Scenes." For the most part, Night Scenes was created using a variety of old, and rare, analogue equipment. With almost no digital editing, the record was primarily mixed through a vintage cassette desk, giving it a nostalgic character with a noisy undertone. Felix fully embraced the synergy of his emotional themes and retrograde gear, enthusing: "A lot of textures were created on an old Soviet synthesizer that causes a blackout when you hit the lowest note on the keyboard. The dysfunctionality of the synths was often used to create rhythm and texture." This unnerving ability Night Scenes has to comfort and confound the listener is summed up by Jordan Hudson, House Of Media producer, and music podcaster, when he concludes: "Some songs on the album have this sort of fleeting comfort and tonality, which dissolves into a subtle rhythmic/structural or modulated disarray the moment I settle into them - this really fits with my experience of the night .. This record is a winner, and will be something I'll listen to a lot from here on

Hypnotic synths, compressed grooves and enveloping textures are the Conrad Van Orton's trademark that we find also in this release. Four tracks for vinyl and a bonus track for digital: we are proud to present the second EP of the Roman producer (based in Berlin) on Attic Music.

From out of nowhere - if nowhere is the febrile, warped and twilit imagination of Julia McFarlane - comes Whoopee, the second album by J.McFarlane’s Reality Guest. Whoopee is an esoteric, kaleidoscopic movie in music form directed by Julia McFarlane and co-conspirator Thomas Kernot. Full of life, breakbeats and smokey vignettes on the fragile nature of interpersonal relationships, Whoopee is a stylistic evolution from everything McFarlane has done before. Surreal, beautiful in parts and replete with the aching wisdom McFarlane’s songwriting has always promised, this Reality Guest pulls back the curtain on a whole scene of naked truth. Recorded in Melbourne in bursts since the release of 2019’s Ta Da, Whoopee features a new sound palette and band member in Kernot. The duo dive deep into electronic pop tropes, mining digital synths, samples, breakbeats and deep bass grooves, largely dispensing with live instrumentation. If Ta Da took twists and turns with your expectations, offering a Dada-ist, monochromatic take on pop music, Whoopee is McFarlane’s subterranean love-sick pinks, reds, greens, purples and blues. Becoming something of a tradition, the album starts with an instrumental intro pilfered from a 90s’ spy film or cinema intro music, puffing up the listener for the heart-squeezing bathos of Full Stops. Over a bleary backdrop of walking bass lines, jazz- inflected keys and smoked-out atmosphere, McFarlane’s poetry narrates the fragile state of a relationship: “You put a full stop where I thought there’d be a comma, I want the story to continue even with all the drama.” Over a palpable pain, the narrator is revelling in the drama of a relationship, addicted to tumult and heightened emotion. On Sensory, a space age bachelor lounge pad ballad, the converse state of the previous song is explored, here the narrator is battling the numbness of being out of the drama, stuck in a sensory-deprivation tank, anaesthesized and battling to emerge from the fog. Wrong Planet explores an otherworldly pop music, hewing a bright hook out of a sense of confusion. A bona-fide, sing-along chorus bursts out of the narrator musing on the absurdity of existing in this reality. It speaks of one of Julia McFarlane’s main talents, her knack of inspecting human relationships and states with a clear perspective, like an alien visiting Earth and realising everything we are is really, really strange. Whoopee is both more accessible than previous Reality Guest work and somehow more obfuscated. Where the production on Ta Da was dry, sharp and strange, this Reality Guest is blurred, almost smeared with the effluvium of 90s+00s culture and existence. Through it all, it’s hard to deny the undeniable pull of the songs. Precious Boy carries on the lounge theme with a whole sampler of cut up sounds fading in and out of the haze as McFarlane’s voice is right up to the speaker cooing and free- associating, maybe in love or maybe in confusion... maybe they’re the same thing? Sometimes the listener is invited to just bathe in the tone of the vocal, as on Apocalypse, where the texture and timbre of the vocal is luxurious, bathing in piano tinkles and double bass throb. On lead single Slinky, a cut up beat reminiscent of Washingtonian Go-Go drum patterns leads, the song slipping through your fingers, elusive and presenting sound as pure pleasure. Closer Caviar jumps back into the broken breakbeats of a surreal funk, fuelled by the sensory pleasure of the music, a hedonistic whirl in rapture, the narrator now living life to the fullest in all its giddy heights and deep troughs. This is the album’s main character fully-actualised and in the terrible, beautiful moment.

Dave Saved makes his debut release on studio 33 with Passing Images, an entrancing suite of hazy dance floor mementos, infused with a characteristic chopped and screwed soul.

As if heard through the dusty circuits of an android's dying memory drive, replaying songs picked up during its lifetime and mixing them into elegiac reveries in a final flashback of its existence, the sound is glowing with a patina hued warmth that feels uncannily familiar.

It's a considerably more dance oriented work than Dave's previous output but with a distinctly textural approach to the composition as well. The result is a densely vaporous sublimation of pure emotion. All refracted through an almost ghostly view of dance music's potentially hypnagogic effect, by way of repetitive progression and dreamy abstraction.

KOOL’s clicky drum work pass the words to the floor, and the party breaks down with sudden synth and take all of us home.

On track HOMIE, Sonic Weapon shows his signature fast boogie style again in a new approach with much dubbed out, ear pleasing, filtering, minimalistic, and stylistic way. The texture keeps changing but keeping the groove.

Feels like the beauty of watching a bridge getting slowly collapsing after somehow you made it to the other side.

The duo features comfy calming ear tickling electronic sound with some kiddish, animalistic, or primitive humor in their own balance. This track Presence grooves with a leaning forward racing gamey phrase drifting around the mini synth explosion, feels like a joyful cruise during regardless the intense highway.

Classically trained cellist, composer and storyteller Lihla (Lih-Qun Wong) presents her debut album, ‘Socha’ for A Strangely Isolated Place. Combining a vast instrumental skillset of piano, cello, electronics and spoken word, she crafts intensely immersive aural-hallucinatory worlds of intricately shifting landscapes.

A deeply personal work, Socha explores the ‘diaspora of time and space, and why we all feel so displaced.' Piano chapters capture the meeting place between memory and longing, while explorational vocal and cello textures invoke and echo the ancient, the feminine, and the otherworldly.

Lihla’s voice guides us, weaving through electronics and field recordings of the ‘real-world' to set the path for a poetic and deeply haunting journey through the internal psyche that is truly transportive and escapist.

With BC001 we introduce Ṣonuga aka Femi Shinuga-Fleming. A NYC
based techno producer and DJ with Nigerian and Caribbean roots and an extensive background in live experimental electronic music.

Ṣonuga is interested in the intersections of deep textural soundscapes, layered percussion and shuffled rhythms.
His debut EP, 'Airing' explores themes of sound and space influenced by his architectural studies, while also exploring and paying homage to contemporary dub techno.

"One time at Kennesaw mountain in Georgia, I was climbing the mountain in the middle of June and it must have been close to 100 degrees, but in this one particular spot it was very cold. The hairs on my neck stood up and I knew something strange was happening. Then the wind whispered something like `retreat,' and I did. I later learned that the spot where I was on the battlefield was known as `the dead angle', the place where the fiercest fighting took place. The Black Angels formed in Austin, Texas, in 2004, comprising from six people (now five) from very different backgrounds. Singer/vocalist Christian Bland is the son of a Presbyterian Pastor and was raised in a devoutly religious household. Bassist / guitarist Nate Ryan was born on a cult compound and drummer Stephanie Bailey claims she's a descendent of Davy Crocket. She and Alex Maas (vocals/guitar) believe a little girl in a red linen dress haunts the group's home. The band released Passover in 2006 to critical acclaim for both the album and the song "The First Vietnamese War". Most of all, Passover established The Black Angels as a band with brains, balls and a strong message. And this time around, the message is there to read in a 16-page booklet that comes with the album. Wiederveröffentlichung des selbstbetitelten Debütalbums der texanischen Band, Teethe, die zwischen Dallas und Austin lebt. Ihr gleichnamiges Debütalbum entstand im Laufe des Jahres 2020 und ist eine Sammlung von Songs, die im Laufe der Zeit zusammengefügt wurden - eine Klangcollage aus fragmentierten Aufnahmen und halbfertigen Tracks, die inmitten der Isolation zu einem Ganzen wurden. Das Album wurde im November 2020 zunächst ohne viel Aufsehen im Eigenverlag veröffentlicht und verbreitete sich mit seiner warmen Lo-Fi Ästhetik und den langsamen, beruhigenden Songs durch Mundpropaganda. Etwa ein Jahr später, Anfang 2022, meldete sich die Band mit dem Song "Tag" zurück, einer neuen Single, die die Aufmerksamkeit der Slowcore-Fans auf sich zog und von unwahrscheinlichen Berühmtheiten gelobt wurde. Bald folgten Tourneen mit Charlie Martin von Hovvdy, Momma, Milly, Waveform und They Are Gutting A Body Of Water. Canadian bowed guitarist and multi-instrumentalist C. Diab announces his fifth album Imerro, out February 16th, and presents the trip-infused lead single 'Lunar Barge'.

(Real name) Caton Diab creates soundscapes that evoke the spectacular wilderness of his childhood home in northern Vancouver Island. Incorporating experimental textures, folk overtones and tape manipulations, C. Diab uniquely finds the unseen spaces in-between, and fittingly dubs his creations "post-classical grunge". Imerro explores new sonic realms and is the culmination of a sound world that Diab has built up since the critically acclaimed 'No Perfect Wave' (2016, Injazero) and subsequent releases 'Exit Rumination' (2018), 'White Whale' (2020) and 'In Love & Fracture' (2021). The Wire calls it "ambient music in the best sense - music for living, which can be both non-invasive and immersive...epic"

Imerro was recorded in late July and August of 2021 at Risque Disque Studio in Cedar, BC, during the summer's unprecedented second "heat dome", which saw temperatures soaring to over 40 degrees. Recorded with regular collaborator and engineer Jonathan Paul Stewart, the pair journeyed by boat to the studio to a place with minimal distraction with a plan of "simple ecstatic improvisation." Diab explains: "I wanted to place myself in a space for creation with little thematic pretence, with the belief that music 'shows its face' as you move along. I would pick up an instrument, whether I had experience playing it or not, and make a sound. If it wanted to be played, it would play."

Dicks’ debut LP has been acknowledged as a foundational statement in Punk ever since its initial 1983 release. Following their first single, 1980’s “Dicks Hate The Police,” and a live split with fellow Austinites the Big Boys, Kill From The Heart does not disappoint. Originally released on SST, the album stands apart from the mass of generic thrash-hardcore contemporaries— fueled by the manic, but controlled power of singer Gary Floyd along with the original lineup of guitarist Glen Taylor, bassist Buxf Parrot and drummer Pat Deason. Dicks were operating at an absolute peak at this point, alternating damaged workouts that suggest Flipper or No Trend on one end and highly charged tracks in the vein of Minutemen or Tales of Terror on the other. Straight out of the gate on “Anti Klan,” the band trades blues-grounded guitar with squealing feedback and intensely political lyrics. The raw emotional sincerity of Floyd, who was openly gay in Reagan-era Texas, provides unmistakeable urgency to songs such as “No Nazi’s Friend,” “Rich Daddy” and the title track, which remains one of the stone-cold classic punk anthems. Forty years on, Kill From The Heart continues to smolder—an arresting testament to the possibilities embodied in creative rage. It is no surprise that Dicks have been covered by Mudhoney, Jesus Lizard and more. Superior Viaduct is honored to present this truly essential reissue. Always timely reissue of Muqata'a's first self-released EP from 2017. After years of fertile digital existence on his own Bandcamp, 'La Lisana Lah' now gets a much deserved tactile version through Souk, the Discrepant sublabel responsible for the already classic 'Inkanakuntu'. One of the most prominent figures of the Palestinian electronic scene, Muqata'a's trajectory has been one of resistance and urgency, leaving a sonic imprint of his own from pretty much the beginning.

Without anything tentative or vestigial about its sonic fictions, 'La Lisana Lah' deploys an arsenal of Muqata'a's traits that would be explored on subsequent releases: the glitchy thick textures verging on noise of 'Tib Al Huroof', the narcotic broken beats of 'Taqdirahu Anta' and 'Zyadet Naqs' or the alluring disruptive harmonic suspension of 'Dijla Wal Fada', everything cared for with an essential attention to space and evoking the heritage of Palestinian resistance through his use of samples and scales. A visionary from the get go.

Bereits seit 2017 warten die vier Tracks dieser Full-Length-Split LP auf eine Veröffentlichung. Es wurde also Zeit, dass sich die Geschichte einer Freundschaft zweier Bands zum Happy End wendet. Wobei, 'happy' ist hier wenig - neben der Freundschaft verbindet die beiden Bands vor allem das zähflüssige Aufschichten von Riffs: unprätentiös, negativ, kathartisch. Das Ergebnis ist monolitischer Sound und Inhalte, die mehr Fragen stellen, als dieses Leben Antworten geben kann. In den deutschen Texten von Crowskin findet diese Frustration ihre Entsprechung: ohnmächtige Wut, gepaart mit düsterer Melancholie folgen schleppenden Rhythmen und dunkler Emotionalität. Bad Luck Rides On Wheels bespielen mit einem über 15 Minuten langen Track die zweite Seite der Platte und bringen den Hörer schon mit einem repetitiven, an eine dunkle Version von Kraut erinnerndes Intro an die Grenzen, bevor sich der Track in ein von Baudelaires "Blumen des Bösen" inspiriertes groovendes Sludge-Monster steigert. BAD LUCK RIDES ON WHEELS aus Rostock gibt es ebenfalls seit 2004, gegründet als Post-Metal-Projekt voller dunkler Endlos-Prog-Jams. Die Musiker spiel(t)en u.a. auch bei WOJCZECH, CONFUSION MASTER und WHO'S MY SAVIOUR. In Jahren endloser Touren, ernsthafter mentaler Zusammenbrüche und Schwierigkeiten ist das Powertrio mittlerweile in der absoluten Finsternis angekommen, mit hypnotischen Soundschleifen, tonnenschweren Drums und undurchdringlichen Gitarren, zwischen denen von irgendwo ganz unten der Gesang hervorgurgelt. Beide Seiten der Platte wurden in Rostock im Studio von BAD LUCK RIDES ON WHEELS-Drummer Pierre aufgenommen, der es verstanden hat, das Individuelle aber auch das Verbindende beider Bands einzufangen. Wie das Titelbild des Winterbaums, das sich in den Wortmustern von Rooting For Love widerspiegelt, behauptet Laetitia, dass die Art und Weise, wie wir die kommende Welt heilen, und was wir daraus machen, eine Ko-Kreation sein wird. 1961, Port Richmond, Staten Island, NYC: Five kids stumble into a community center, sent by their parents to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. A lifelong friendship is formed over their shared love of doo-wop. The kids start learning harmony and the next thing they know they're cutting records. The group begins to gain steam as they take their act to the packed clubs around New York City. But history has other plans for the boys. First, The Beatles invade America, making doo-wop yesterday's news. Then, the United States invades Vietnam and two of the five boys are sent off to the jungle. Reintroducing: The Splendids. 61 years after their initial formation, the group has reconvened to cut two truly breathtaking records. With three of the five surviving original members weaving together heartfelt harmonies, the group has regenerated themselves and enlisted the help of multi-platinum soul singer Eamon to sing lead. Eamon is no stranger to doo-wop, as he got his start in the music business touring the Northeast as a young boy with a group his father Walter formed in the 90's. With this father and son reunion on these two tracks, the listener is taken back to a time when walking down the street you might come across a gang of youth singing their hearts out on a street corner, serenading the city with their souls. The Splendids hired Los Angeles based producer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Ubick to produce the records and conjure up the retro rhythm and blues sounds of the 1960's. Frequent Eamon collaborator the Oklahoman Benj Heard was then brought on to mix and produce the vocals. Both Ubick and Heard's sonic fingerprints add texture and groove to the groups legacy on 'Cry Baby Cry' and 'Blame My Heart'. Interlocked Rhythm Sample & Hold Music, this approach to sound creation weaves a mesmerizing tapestry of rhythm, texture, and sonic exploration, captivating listeners and defying traditional musical boundaries. At its core, Interlocked Rhythm Sample & Hold Music is a synthesis of technology, creativity, and a deep understanding of rhythmic intricacies. The foundation lies in the Sample & Hold circuit, a device that captures and freezes incoming voltages, creating distinct musical snapshots that evolve over time or an Linear Feedback Shift Register (eg. Rungler), a circuit used in electronic music synthesis and sound manipulation to create unique and evolving musical textures. The Rungler was created by Rob Hordijk. A more sophisticated use of a 8 bit shift register and by combining this with a typical sequencer design is the Klee Sequencer developed by Scott Stites. A cheap version of this design is the Turing Machine. Another tool is the Analog Shift Register. In the context of creating arabesque melodies, an analog shift register (invented by Fukushi Kawakami and later adapted by Serge Tcherepnin) can be a fascinating tool to generate intricate and ornamented musical patterns. Yet, it‘s the interlocking of these snapshots that sets this genre apart, infusing the compositions with an intricate dance of patterns and pulses. A fourth device is a pendulum or random addressed sequencer, that in the first case moves in a drunken unpredictable manner. Each of these devices for uncertainty becomes a rhythmic sculptor, freezing the dynamic interplay of melodies, beats, and textures. Joyce Harris was born in Kentucky in 1939 and moved to New Orleans with her family when she was 13 years old. Harris learned to play guitar, write songs and was soon performing duets with her younger sister Judy. They released three singles – ‘He’s The One’ / ‘Hey Pretty Baby’, ‘Washboard Sam’ / ‘Nursery Rock (Beedle De Bop)’ and ‘Hey Little Baby’/ ‘Rock And Roll Kittens’ – as Judy and Joyce in 1958. When her sister got married, Harris spent a year singing in restaurants in Mexico and a first solo single ‘It’s You’ / ‘The Boy In School’ was released on New York’s U.T. Records at the end of 1959. A talent spotter saw her in Mexico and was impressed enough to secure her an audition with the Austin, Texas-based Domino label. Harris was soon in the studio with Tommy Kaspar and Don Burch of Domino’s vocal quartet, the Slades, to record ‘I Cheated’ / ‘Do You Know What It’s Like To Be Lonesome?’ (R-903) in October 1960. ‘No Way Out’ / ‘Dreamer’ (R-905) followed in January 1961 and sold strongly enough to be licensed to Infinity Records. On 7 April 1961, Harris performed ‘No Way Out’ live on TV on American Bandstand. Three more singles would be issued on different labels between 1963 and 1966.

Harris’ cover version of ‘I Got My Mojo Working’ – backed by Sonny Rhodes’ group the Daylighters –was recorded at the ‘No Way Out’ session and remained unissued until Ace put it out on our “The Domino Records Story” in 1997 (CDCHD 506). With renewed interest in Harris we are delighted to pair this ‘Trailer’ version of ‘I Got My Mojo Working’ with ‘No Way Out’ as a 7” single.
