Digital Afrika return to the fray with this incredible EP for ASW. Featuring the original Gnawa plus it’s acoustic source recording as performed by Radouan Naim in Morocco PLUS two truly excellent remixes from the legendary Jose Marquez and Melbourne’s own TEYMORI (Amin Payne).

The original source recording for this track was laid down in Planet Essaouira and recorded by Zhonu “Nui” Moon (Digital Afrika ) on one of his many cultural trips to his ancestral home land. The studio is situated on the Moroccan coastal town of Essaouira , a cultural hub for the Berber (indigenous Moroccan) traditions.

This enigmatic town , popularised by the beatniks and bohemians of the 60ʼs, most famously by Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones , has a mystique all its own as well as a long musical history.

“Gnawa” in Berber language literally translates as “Trance“ music , and is traditionally performed in “Lilas” musical ceremonies accompanied by dance that can go on for days .. where the purpose is to produce trance-like states of being where different types of healing or catharsis can occur ..

The recording was then brought back to Melbourne, Australia. Where the Digital Africa team applied its electronic Afro-house touches , while keeping true to its original North African aesthetic.

We are excited to welcome Orestes Gomez to the Olindo ranks with his sublime remix for Raúl Monsalve y los Forajidos "Bocón",

featuring the distinctive vocals of Luzmira Zerpa, fusing neo soul, jazz and Venezuelan drums.

The final two tracks of the Blizzards Remix EP are Irène Dresel's epic warehouse belting version of Vectra and Nathan's own live version of Torchsong which melds choppy beat juggling with gorgeously glistening synths and is fresh from his recent UK tour. These follow the release of the 90s infused bass heavy Sandstone and Afrodeutsche’s rework of Cry Me A Blizzard, which stripped the original right back to its chords and added her own achingly beautiful vocals, to create a haunting choral ambient artwork. This follows last year’s new album ‘Blizzards’, which was described by The Quietus as “his best work”, and “his best LP yet” yet by Resident Advisor.

A trio of tunes from Diahgonal’s brilliant debut LP “Spiral” gets remixed by label mates for this Special 12”. We’ve packed a sonic spectrum into this release: a tech-house shaker from Adriano Mirabile,
autonomic goodness from Driftsystem, ambient soundscape from Louis Haiman, abstract IDM chillage from Maps Of Hyperspace, and tribal techno tones from Robert Roos.

"The art of the remix has been around for several decades, from the fervid imaginations of JA pioneers like Coxsone Dodd, Duke Reid or King Tubby to the disco enthusiasts of New York, such as Tom Moulton, who bequeathed us the modern iteration of the remix and provided a template from which most remixers still work. Moulton's first commercial remix, a reworking of BT Express' appropriately-named `Do It 'Till You're Satisfied', which stretched it from three minutes to a luxurious five, assisted the band in securing its first Billboard R&B Number One, as well as providing a pathway for remixers like Walter Gibbons, Larry Levan, Richie Rivera and Tee Sott, to completely reinvent the concept of a remix (and in some instances, deconstructing the idea of what comprised a song). It has subsequently been used as a marketing tool, a dancefloor-devastator, a gimmick (both cheap and expensive) or even as a way of reaching a different audience (think Tori Amos' `Professional Widow'). Khruangbin are no slouches when it comes to the remix themselves. They've been reworked before, in 2016, with the highly collectible EP on Boogiefuturo. But this time, they're taking it a step further with an album dedicated to the art. Entering the tight-knit world of a Khruangbin song can be a little daunting. They have created this entire universe in which the trio seem to function telepathically in the way the music is composed, arranged and played. To mess with their delicate eco-system can invoke feelings similar to that of an unwanted guest crashing a good-time party. "We write our music to be interpreted; this is another wonderful interpretation of the music," reassure Khruangbin. "There is something very vulnerable about letting others work on your music. But through the correspondence with the different artists, we gained a bigger connection to the songs themselves." The choice of remixers for this album is neither arbitrary nor accidental. They're not names picked randomly out of a hat or chosen via a throw of the dice. All have some connection to the band, sometimes personal friendships, musical connections, or simply mutual musical appreciation. Harvey Sutherland and Ginger Roots have both toured with the band, Kadhja Bonet and Ron Trent had their own mutual fan club going on, Knxwledge sampled `White Gloves' on a recent mixtape, Natasha Diggs and Soul Clap's Eli's are recent buddy-ups, Quantic is a mutual friend of Bonobo (crucial in the KB origin story), while I've known Laura for number of years; plus she is also godmother to one of Felix Dickinson's kids. Doesn't get much more intimate than that, right? Some of these remixes were specifically made so you can dance your ass off while getting down to the Khruangbin sound, while some might better be appreciated horizontally with headphones on, wearing fashionably loose clothes. The choice is yours. But all were made with love and respect for Khruangbin. "A good remix deconstructs, recontextualizes, or simply extends a good time," say the band. A new label from Kinfolk records founder - and a 14 of a Soft Rock - Christopher Galloway is upon us.

This first release sees the beautiful sounds of Torn Sail/Huw Costin revamped by the mighty production force that is Mark Rayner and Matt Horobin, aka Shrinkwrap.

Shrinkwrap are a production team that have been in the wilderness for a number of years but are much lauded by The Idjut Boys - amongst others - which has seen them release on Discfunction and U-Star.

Being close friends with Huw Costin, they decided to get together and re-work the track Gain On Gains that featured on Torn Sail's 2017 long player, This Short Sweet Life.

These two re-works see Shrinkwrap take the original into an extended/after-hours bliss out of epic proportions and an ambient dub.

Added to the package is an unreleased on vinyl mix of Costin's Disconnected cut from 2015. This is a more folk-infused affair that once again ventures into epic territory thanks to the production skills of Rayner and Horobin.

A lovely EP to kick off this new label.

Next release on the label is a collaboration between ISSUES x Woodland studios who run a competition with more than 100 entries on remix duties for Detlef’s “Dub Clap” and Campbell Fryer’s “MOODY”. Honcho of Woodlands Iglesias delivered a strong remix of Dub Clap with heavy basslines, rolling beats and the vocals slightly pitched to create a darker vibe. RN ISMO remix of Dub Clap was definitely close to the sound of ISSUES with a driving bassline, minimal beats, quick drops and a playful vocal breakdown.

On Campbell Fryer’s MOODY the first remixer is Woody who delivered a super groovy remix with a funky bassline, straight beat with swing hihats and atmospheres at the background merging nicely with the beats, using the riff in a different and extra playful way that creates an amazing breakdown. The last remixer for MOODY is Shuski who delivered a housy version of the track. Straight funky beats with a big driving bassline, synth stabs and arpeggios through out the track and some wicked breakdowns with clever fills before the track kicks back in.
