Sind die 11 groovenden Tracks auf "Finyl Vinyl" der krönende Abschluss einer langen Karriere, mit der sich Canned Heat aus dem Showbusiness verabschieden? Zumindest der Albumtitel scheint dies anzudeuten. Andererseits ist der Tourplan der Band für 2024 schon gut gefüllt und nach Europa soll es im Sommer auch gehen.

"What Lies Beneath" ist das zweite Studioalbum der fi nnischen Künstlerin Tarja. Ursprünglich 2010 veröffentlicht, ist es mit Hits wie "Until My Last Breath", "I Feel Immortal" und "Falling Awake" ein echter Fanliebling und bis heute eines ihrer erfolgreichsten Alben. Die 2024 Re-Issue ist als "2CD Deluxe Digipak" und, zum ersten Mal, als "Heavyweight 2LP Vinyl" (Gatefold, 180g, schwarz) erhältlich. Beide Formate bieten ein wunderschön restauriertes Artwork, und alle Tracks wurden bei Sterling Sound remastered.

Das macht die 2024 Re-Issue zum ultimativen "What Lies Beneath"-Erlebnis. Das 2CD Deluxe Digipak enthält außerdem 15 weitere Songs, darunter alternative Versionen, Single-Edits und Remixe. Viele davon wurden bis heute noch nicht physisch veröffentlicht. Außerdem enthält es den Track "The Good Die Young" von The Scorpions & Tarja, welcher ursprünglich nur als Bonustrack auf dem 2010er Ltd. "Dreamers" Boxset enthalten war.

Blue/Black Marble Vinyl, limitiert auf 200 Exemplare. ARROW MINDS sind eine melodische Metalcore / Hardcore Band aus Rostock, Deutschland. Sie wurden in einer kalten Winternacht im Jahr 2016 gegründet. Wenn du Bands wie Strike Anywhere, Avail oder Architects magst, wird diese Band deine Welt auf den Kopf stellen. Ihr neues Album ist ein großer Schritt nach vorne im Vergleich zu ihrem letzten. Man merkt, dass diese Band ihren musikalischen Weg gefunden hat. Nach einer erfolgreichen Reihe von fünf Studioalben und zwei Live-Alben, Psychedelic Backfire I und II (beide 2019), hatten Elephant9 ihre groovige Mischung aus energiegeladenem Rock und Power-Jazz so weit gebracht, wie sie konnten. In dieser Hinsicht war ihr letztes Album Arrival of The New Elders (2021) eine willkommene und sehr zeitgemäße Ergänzung ihres Schaffens. Mythical River ist auf die gleiche Art und Weise geformt und ein natürlicher Nachfolger, mit sechs herausragenden neuen Kompositionen von Keyboard-Maestro Ståle Storlokken, gerahmt durch zwei kurze kosmische Einwürfe. Von hypnotischen und magischen bis hin zu messerscharfen und polyrhythmischen Stücken ist dies ein weiteres starkes Werk eines Trios, das sich auf der Höhe seiner Zeit befindet. Es wurden Vergleiche mit Bands gezogen, die bis in die sechziger Jahre zurückreichen, aber mit den letzten Alben erscheinen Elephant9 als eine durch und durch zeitgenössische, zeitlose und sogar futuristisch klingende Band. Thee Heart Tones treat us to another must have 7" while the finishing touches are being put on their debut album. A bunch of talented kids from Hawthorne, California that came right out of high school and wound up in the studio with two legendary producers (El Michels Affair & Tommy Brenneck) cutting their first album in 5 days. Here on this 45 are two more of songs drenched in the magic that was captured. Side A "No Longer Mine" is gritty and driving mid tempo banger that lead singer Jazmine Alvarado's honeyed voice smooths out. A declaration of young love gone wrong, Jazmine states the facts and lays down the law like a boss with a chorus that will live in your head rent free. Side B "Cry My Tears Away" is a heavy duty B Side Ballad that can hold court with the best of them. This is sure to find a place in the hearts of all the slowie enthusiasts and soundtrack many a slow dance, joy ride, and late night.

Recorded in 1971 by a 27-year-old pastor and an after school program choir, Like A Ship is a stirring and powerful meditation on the wayward aftermath of the Civil Rights Movement. Tracked with the help of Chess/Cadet maestros Gene Barge, Phil Upchurch, and Richard Evans, the album is a mix of euphoric gospel and Mayfieldesque political soul, with sleigh bells, hand claps, and jazzy piano stabs. Sampled by T.I., Kanye, and Khaled, Barrett created a rapturous, crossover gospel classic that's still wildly r elevant.

Weniger rau als beim Album davor, fast schon ein wenig poppig, bewegen sich die acht Songs zwischen Indierock, Psychedelic, Americana und Postpunk. Düster-sphärische Soundflächen wechseln sich ab mit krachig-dissonanten Ausbrüchen ("Drift", "Passerby"), bisweilen lugt gar Nick Cave um die Ecke ("The Blanket"). "The Beauty Of Dysfunction" ist kein Konzeptalbum - aber der Titel könnte ein Leitmotiv für die Lyrics zu den Songs sein: Es geht um Brüche, um Widersprüche, um Risse auf der Oberfläche - sei es in Liebesbeziehungen ("Easy Care"), in Lebensentwürfen ("All we've ever had (was enough)") oder dem Verhältnis zwischen sogenannten Minderheiten und der "Mehrheit" ("Difference"). Auf der anderen Seite die vielen Scharlatane, die sich "Lifecoaches" nennen und im Netz oder in hochdotierten "Keynotes" ihre Selbstoptimierung als Ersatzreligion vermarkten ("Ode to Excellence"). Und nicht zuletzt die Scheißpopulisten, die einem weismachen wollen, dass alles doch ganz einfach ist ("Habits"). Ist es nicht. Es ist schwierig. Leben - und lieben - heißt, die Dissonanz zu akzeptieren, die Schönheit im Unperfekten zu erkennen.

Der zweite Teil dieser Killer-Sammlung des besten Punk und Hardcore, den die Helvetische Eidgenossenschaft zwischen 1977 und 1984 zu bieten hatte. Ein umfassender Überblick und eine Bestätigung einer aufregenden Musikszene, mit noch nie wiederveröffentlichten Tracks und absolut unveröffentlichten Stücken. Dazu gibt es ein 12-seitiges Booklet mit Fotos und Informationen zu den Bands. Volume 2 dieser großartigen Zusammenstellung wieder mit Schätzen der alten Schweizer Punk Rock und Hardcore Szene. Vom klassischen und genialen Punkrock-Sound von The Bastards bis zum feurigen Hardcore der ersten Generation von The Squirt ist hier alles vertreten, was das Punkherz begehrt. Wie schon beim Vorgänger gibt es ein dickes 12-seitiges Booklet mit der Geschichte der Bands, Erfahrungsberichten aus erster Hand und einer Auswahl an seltenen Fotos. Ein Muss!

"Gut Geklaut" ist das dritte Langeisen des Trios aus Mettmann, den Königen und Gründern des METTCORE. Dabei ist die neue Scheibe anders als der Titel es vermuten läßt KEIN Coveralbum, im Gegenteil! Fleischwolf haben einfach alles durch ebendiesen gedreht, was sie an Musikgenres und Bands über die Jahrzehnte an Vorlieben entwickelt haben und sie geprägt hat. Und das ist ne Menge, denn PUNK darf bei Fleischwolf immer noch ALLES und wird weder textlich noch musikalisch in ein Korsett gesteckt! Und deshalb gibt es auf "Gut Geklaut" mit 12 eigenen Songs einfach unglaublich Vieles zu entdecken (inkl zahlreicher Gastmusiker), was das Album für jeden Punk/Hardcore/Metaler zu einer spannenden "Zitatereise" macht: Von den glorreichen Punkrock-Tagen, ("Revolution, "Fuck the System", Hass ist Deine Währung") Hardcore ("Echter Scheisstag", "Sturmflut") , geil-üblen Schweinerock bis Thrash bis hin zur liebevollen NDW-Hommage an ein anderes TRIO aus Großenkneten. ("Ja, Paul") . Und wer einen Song wie "Mötörhead 4 Life" in Petto hat (Nein, Lemmy ist leider nicht auferstanden...hinterm Mirko ist tatsächlich Sänger Ollrich!), kann kein schlechtes Mett sein... "Gut geklaut" Oder auf den Punkt gebracht, wie die Band schon singt: "Wir spielen nicht nach Euren Regeln"!

OLUMA wurde 2021 von dem Bassisten Gregor Nicolai, dem Schlagzeuger André van der Heide und dem Saxophonisten Roman Polatzky gegründet. Die instrumentalen Kompositionen der neunköpfigen Band lassen sich dem Global Groove zuordnen. Sie schaffen dichte Grooves, die von energetischen Brass-Lines bespielt werden und in virtuose Improvisationen münden. Die vier Bläser können das Publikum aber auch schwebend und leicht in eine träumerische Welt begleiten. Die multikulturelle Szene Berlins mit ihren unterschiedlichsten musikalischen Einflüssen haben André und Gregor geprägt und zusammengebracht. Dazu kommt die Liebe zu handgemachter Groove-Musik, die Leidenschaft zu tanzbaren Beats. Roman trafen sie im Dunstkreis der Musikhochschule Leipzig, wo sich die internationale Band gefunden hat. Der Albumtitel Cooking Time entstand nicht zufällig: Die Musik entsteht in gemeinsamen Songwriting-Sessions, bei denen Beats gebastelt und Ideen eingesungen werden. Die Band gewann den Delay-Nerd und Afrobeat-Liebhaber Umberto Echo für ihre Aufnahmen, der mit Verwendung alter analoger Technik einen nostalgisch anmutenden Sound schafft, welcher auf moderne Produktion trifft. Mit ihrem Debut-Album möchte OLUMA die Idee teilen, dass Musik einen Beitrag zur globalen Verständigung leisten kann und Menschen verbindet. The ashtrays in the music cellar are getting cold. Nobody coughs, that Beer tastes stale, and the disco ball spins in slow motion the sequins are missing. Only a small illuminated sign shines on the counter. Tonight: LO FAT ORCHESTRA – New Wave HIT-MACHINE from Schaffhausen, Switzerland. The band – three men with a sense of well-being Melodies – sets off on a ghost ride. “I’m not your dancer,” sings Chrisi Schmid, the singer behind it powerful synthesizer that writes the lyrics without them to write down. "I'm not your fucker." I'm not your puppet, you clown. This is the essence of the new Lo-Fat album “LFO_09”, which contains eight songs. That the name of the album just as well could come from a UFO is consistent. You don't have to Wanting to fit in or be cool for the sake of being cool. If in doubt, for the doubt. “I was afraid to talk to you,” sings Chrisi in the song “Sound,” and his Synth hops a wild dance. “I was afraid I wouldn’t like you. And I didn’t want to be like you.” The band still doesn't need a guitar. The bass works for two (the new bassist is Dominic Rubli). Drummer Daniel Zimmermann switches seemingly effortlessly between high-speed, Ballade scene and assembly line. “Love is for free,” sings Chrisi in the wonderful ballad “Good Times”. “This place is killing me.”

Gimme, Gimme, Gimme Desire, an everlasting grip of that youthful energy, that fire and fury you felt playing a style of music that gives you a lifelong addiction and appreciation. If you’ve once been part of that certain something, that became part of your identity, it never lets you go. Drummer Sascha, bassist Jan, guitarists Philipp and Tobias know how it is getting older but still feeling the fire. The four friends shook up the scenes out of Frankfurt in the 90s and 00s. They played in different bands, they toured Europe and the US of A, they were mods, punks, hardcore kids. And they never lost their connection and love for their music. That’s why they got together some years back, rehearsing and writing songs just for the heck of it. Out of pure desperation the four of them were thinking about staying a goddamn instrumental band, maybe working with projections and shit to fog the fact that there was something initial missing: a singer. The road was calling their names, and they wanted to play shows and let you and you and you know what they got... So, they gave it one last try to find somebody to fill the void behind the mic. What helped was a platform – basically Tinder for musicians – to find that certain somebody. They kept it simple and only dropped one thing: #blackflag. On the other side of the screen there is Sam, a mystical, ghostly punkrock fairy. Sam shares that same hashtag, and she wants to sing. So, why not give it a try? Sam takes the offer, shows up in the rehearsal space, and the rest is history. Sam owns it. Sam is prepared. Sam can sing, scream, kick ass and has the lyrics to back it all up! On different occasions they now set stages on fire. They played a sweaty show in a packed Molotow cellar at Reeperbahn Festival, they joined the “Female Fronted Is Not A Genre” festival at legendary SO36 in Berlin and took the place by storm. They are ready. They were born ready. And they have that record to prove it. As any classic hardcore/punk LP it’s almost over before it started. Ten songs in twenty minutes. That’s the way. I Am A God sets the tone: “You think that I’m a girl?”, Sam asks, “Let me tell you I am a god/ And you know that I’m heaven sent.” What else would Sam be? The legendary hashtagged Californian hardcore icons drip out of every note here. This is old-school knowledge, played today. Fast, furious, and packed with energy. But it’s way more than just a bland tribute. It’s a middle-finger that finds its own direction. Salary Man allows itself a certain amount of melody – also carried by Sam who obviously can do more than bellow. Or Somewhere that shows that The Pill is a more dimensional band that can even Hüsker Dü things up if they are willing to. The Bitter Pill presents itself surprisingly angular and kind of melancholic. And What’s New almost makes its way into post-hardcore territory. Inbetween Switch and Off give you all the Greg Ginn vs. Dez Cadena your damaged souls were desperately striving for. The debut album Hollywood Smile will be released on April 5th, 2024 by Hamburg’s Sounds Of Subterrania.

Soul entwickelte sich gegen Ende der 1950er Jahre aus Rhythm"n"Blues, Gospel, Blues und Jazz. Im folgenden Jahrzehnt war Soul ein Synonym für schwarze Popmusik. Kennzeichnend dafür waren vor allem die Produktionen von Motown Records, zum Beispiel Diana Ross & The Supremes oder Sam Cooke. Seither sind herzergreifender Gesang und groovige Vibes die größten Stilmerkmale des Soul. Zu den weiteren Ikonen des Soul gehören Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Barry White, Sam Cooke, Al Green und viele mehr. Deren Erfolg ist eng mit dem Kampf der US-amerikanischen Bürgerrechtsbewegung gegen Rassentrennung und für Gleichberechtigung verbunden. 1969 benannte man die Rhythm"n"Blues- in Soul-Charts um. Der Soul-Orkan, der während der Sechziger in den Charts tobte, ebbte jedoch wieder ab, kam aber runderneuert in den 70ern als Phillysound wieder zu erneuten Hitparadenehren. 1982 änderte man die Chart-Bezeichnung von Soul in Black Music. Die vorliegende Kompilation vereint die legendären Stimmen des Soul mit ihren unvergesslichen Hits.

Rich in ancestral flows, between Ghana and Europe, powered by deep, conga led rhythms and seductive warm horn riffs come Jembaa Groove, whose new album and newly rendered sound, reminds us that jazz, in its contemporary, soulful form is not just a London ‘ting’. Highlife is Ghana’s colourful national tradition and is at the heart of Berlin based Jembaa Groove’s groove. And this newly crafted follow up to their debut album. Susuma from 2022, goes even further in provoking new perceptions of jazz and soul music helped by young and senior blood from Ghana and its diaspora. Vocal masterclasses come via Sheffield (UK) based K.O.G and original veteran of the 70s and 80s highlife scene Gyedu Blay Ambolley with Ghanian multi-instrumentalist and producer Kwame Yeboah (Kwashibu Area Band) also providing inspiration.

Yet this is not a breakout moment. For the last 2 years Jembaa Groove have been entertaining discerning dancefloors worldwide. They continue to ratchet up a solid and loyal fanbase buoyed by breakout performances at SXSW (USA), ESNS and Supersonic Jazz Festival (Netherlands). And now looking through the keyhole of 2024, with live headline and album launching dates in April confirmed in London, Paris, Madrid and Berlin and an exciting touring schedule ahead, the future of contemporary, highlife inspired Afro-Jazz is in motion and spreading like gospel.

The making of Congo Funk!, our long-awaited journey to the musical heart of the African continent, took the Analog Africa Team on two journeys to Kinshasa and one to Brazzaville. Selected meticulously from around 2000 songs and boiled down to 14, this compilation aims to showcase the many facets of the funky, hypnotic and schizophrenic tunes emanating from the two Congolese capitals nestled on the banks of the Congo River.

On its south shore, the city of Kinshasa – capital of Democratic Republic of the Congo, the country formerly known as Zaïre – is often seen as Africa’s musical Mecca, the city that spawned such immortal bands as African Jazz, O.K. Jazz and African Fiesta, and the place to which aspiring musicians from throughout the continent would go to make a name for themselves.

But the city of Brazzaville on the north shore of the river – capital of the Congo Republic – played an equally important role in spreading Congolese sounds continentally. In addition to producing legendary bands such as Les Bantous de la Capital, it was the powerful transmitters of Radio Brazzaville that allowed the unmistakable groove of Congolese Rumba to be heard as far away as Nairobi, Yaoundé, Luanda and Lusaka thus turning the electric guitar into the continent’s most important instrument!

Although the musical landscape of these cities had been defined by a core group of bands in the late 1950s, the modernisation of Congolese music has been steadily evolving until the events surrounding the Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman boxing match marked a turning point. The promoter of that event known as “Rumble In The Jungle” was none other than the notorious Don King who needed 10 millions dollars to get Ali and Foreman into a boxing ring. The only candidate willing to put this kind of cash on the table was Mobutu Sese Seko, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Mobutu - the megalomaniac dictator who got to power with the support of the United States and Belgium in exchange for unlimited and affordable access to the riches of the country - had a soft spot for music and it doesn’t come as a surprise that he agreed to a three-day live music festival being organised prior to the “Rumble”. Zaïre 74 - as the festival was dubbed - was meant to hype the boxing match and many stars were invited.

Although a myriads of artists flocked in for the occasion, it was the performance of James Brown on Zairian soil that caused havoc among the younger generation, inspiring hundreds of would-be musicians to take up their electric guitars and reverbs cranked to the max in search of a new sound in which hyperactive Rumba was blended with elements of psych and funk. While the results were very different from the popular music of the three Musketeers - as Tabu Ley, Franco and Verckys were known - they weren’t a complete break with tradition.

These new sounds emerged at a time when the Congolese record industry – previously dominated by European major labels – was experiencing a period of decline due to rising production costs and needed a radical change. The void was filled by dozens of entrepreneurs willing to take chances on smaller scale releases. It was the beginning of a golden age for Congolese independent record labels, and the best of them – Cover N°1, Mondenge, Editions Moninga, Super Contact – preserved the work of some of the region’s finest artists, while launching a generation of younger musicians into the spotlight.

The movement was greatly helped by legendary radio shows but it was the dynamic productions of Télé-Zaïre that set the dynamite on fire. Legend has it that TV shows were so huge that president Mobutu himself ordered RTV du Zaïre to put on daily concerts since it halted criminal activities for the duration of the evening.

Congo Funk! is the story of these sounds and labels, but most of all it is the story of two cities, separated by water but united by an indestructible groove. The fourteen songs on this double LP showcase the many facets of the Congolese capitals, and highlight the bands and artists, famous and obscure, who pushed Rumba to new heights and ultimately influenced the musical landscape of the entire continent and beyond.
