Das Album "The Scholars" spielt auf dem fiktiven Campus der Parnassus Universität. Die Songs des Albums erzählen von Studierenden und Dozierenden sowie deren Erlebnissen als lose Erzählung über Leben, Tod und Wiedergeburt. Die erste Single "Gethsemane" gibt einen Vorgeschmack auf die spirituelle Reise, die das komplette Album prägt. Im Mai 2020 veröffentlichten Car Seat Headrest (Sänger Will Toledo, Gitarrist Ethan Ives, Schlagzeuger Andrew Katz und Bassist Seth Dalby) ihr experimentelles, beatlastiges Album "Making a Door Less Open" - just in dem Moment, als die Welt zum Stillstand kam. Die darauffolgende Phase der erzwungenen Pause zog sich über Jahre. Als sie 2022 endlich wieder auf Tour gehen konnten, waren sie überrascht und erfreut, dass ihr Publikum jünger war als je zuvor. Dank des unerwarteten viralen Erfolgs von "It"s Only Sex" und "Sober to Death" hatte eine neue Generation ihre Coming-of-Age-Klassiker "Teens of Denial" und "Twin Fantasy" für sich entdeckt. "The Scholars" wurde von Toledo produziert und größtenteils analog aufgenommen. Für die Lyrics und die erzählerische Struktur ließ sich Toledo durch Klassiker inspirieren - von Shakespeare über Mozart bis hin zu Opernmusik. Musikalisch orientiert sich "The Scholars" behutsam an großen Rock-Opern und Konzeptalben wie "Tommy" von The Who oder "Ziggy Stardust" von David Bowie. Die erste Albumhälfte dreht sich um Studierende und ihre spirituellen und persönlichen Krisen, während die zweite Hälfte von einer epischen Auseinandersetzung zwischen Tradition und Aufbruch handelt. Auf Sound lag diesmal ein besonderer Fokus. Ethan Ives übernahm eine aktivere Rolle in der Soundgestaltung, was zu einer dichten, vielschichtigen Produktion führte. Neben Stücken wie dem 19-minütigen "Planet Desperation" enthält das Album auch eingängige Songs wie "The Catastrophe (Good Luck With That Man)", das an den Folk-Pop der 60er Jahre erinnert. Car Seat Headrest sehen in "The Scholars" eine neue Ära ihrer Bandgeschichte, die weit über die Anfänge des ehemaligen Soloprojekts hinausgewachsen ist. Teether & Kuya Neil released their first mixtape GLYPH via Chapter in 2021, receiving airplay from NTS, Dublab and Australian radio, plus writeups via Brooklyn Vegan and NME. Four tracks from `GLYPH' were featured in the iconic Australian Netflix series 'Heartbreak High' the following year. 2023 mixtape STRESSOR charted in the Australian Independent Top 10 and made it into end of year best of lists for The Guardian, Rolling Stone and NME Australia. The mixtape was nominated for Best Hip Hop Album at the 2024 Australian Independent Music Awards and named Album of the Week by 3RRR and fBI Radio. Teether & Kuya Neil have performed around Australia and New Zealand. They have played alongside international peers MC Yallah & Debmaster and They Hate Change as well as supported veteran alt-rap outfit Shabazz Palaces and Chicago Footwork pioneer RP Boo. As a solo artist, Teether has collaborated with New York rapper Billy Woods and toured with his outfit Armand Hammer in Australia in 2022. In 2024, he opened for the legendary Kim Gordon. Kuya Neil is an active producer in underground dance music, releasing tracks on UK labels Chinabot and Moveltraxx and has toured South East Asia as a DJ and promoter.

BorninAraraquara/SãoPaulo,Liniker is a multitalented artist - singer, songwriter, music producer, and actress - whose passion for the arts began in childhood. Influenced by her mother and uncles, who were active in samba rock circles, Liniker's early musical experiences planted the seeds for her future career. Today she is one of the most exciting Brazilian artists. In 2022, she won the Best Brazilian Album category at the Latin Grammy Awards with Indigo Borboleta Anil. In 2023, Liniker became immortalized by the Brazilian Academy of Culture, taking the seat once held by Elza Soares, the eternal Brazilian singer. Liniker's sophomore album CAJU, released in August 2024, has quickly become a classic in Brazilian popular music. The album's 14 tracks—some extending beyond 7 minutes—demonstrate Liniker's commitment to artistic expression over commercial constraints. Liniker showcases versatility and artistic growth through a seamless blend of pop, samba, jazz, R&B, and house. "Water Season" is a collaborative EP between the lo-fi duo Hooky and shoegaze artist Winter. They first met online as fans of each other's music and soon started corresponding with ideas, the first of which was writing "horseshoe." After relocating from Los Angeles to New York, Winter took a trip over to Philadelphia in the summer of 2024 where they all became good friends and spent the whole day writing songs together. They coalesced in their love for lo-fi, indie, electronica pairing beautiful melodies with experimentation, sampling, and guitar. In their own way they created a sonic snapshot of that intersection of time and feeling- the bittersweet and fleeting sensation of the end of summer fading into fall. Both bands will be playing shows together this year as well as touring to promote the EP.

Oi Va Voi sind bekannt für prominente Kollaborationen wie mit KT Tunstall, Bridgette Amofah (Rudimental) oder der Violinistin Anna Phoebe. "The Water's Edge" wurde zum Teil von Mike Spencer (Rudimental, Tom Walker, Ellie Goulding) produziert und erscheint auf dem eigenen Label Parallel Skies. Oi Va Voi fuse dance grooves, singer-songwriter sensitivity and a rock’n’roll sensibility with the group’s Jewish cultural heritage and a cosmopolitan rhythmic inspiration drawn from Eastern Europe, the Middle East and beyond. Despite the fractured times we are living in, a theme of optimism through pain is there throughout Oi Va Voi’s new album ‘The Waters Edge’.

We’re reminded of the title of the breakthrough first album, Laughter Through Tears. The Bacon & Quarmby-produced debut won a BBC World Music Award, was listed as a New York Times Top Ten Album Of The Year, and launched the career of a young KT Tunstall. The tradition of world-class musicianship continued with Bridgette Amofah (Rudimental) as the featured vocalist on Travelling the Face of The Globe, and noted violinist Anna Phoebe, who recorded and performed with the band for over a decade.

Every member evolves the Oi Va Voi sound; but through each change, the core themes and vision have remained constant. 2018’s album, Memory Drop, introduced the unique voice of Zohara Niddam, and it’s Zohara who returns here on The Water’s Edge, featuring on ‘Shine A Light’, ‘Lay Your Head’ and ‘Wave’. Also featuring across the new album is composer, violinist and singer Sarah Anderson, who co-wrote seven tracks on the album, with her emotionally poignant lyrics, evocative layered vocals and uplifting violin parts. Guitarist John Matts and Trumpeter David Orchant also return, with Orchant bringing deep colour and expression to the stirring waltz ‘Oceans’.

The album opener ‘Sad Dance’ was written after the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria in early 2023 impacting many of the band’s friends, fans and colleagues. Finding themselves in the studio the day after the tragedy, the band searched for ways to respond. Sarah’’s mournful, pulsating violins create an ever evolving soundscape on top of which her own vocal, and Steve’s earthy clarinet express sorrow and hope. Says Sarah - “It’s about human connection - a metaphorical hand held through trauma, and the preservation of ‘old worlds’ through relics, reminding us of where we came from”.

‘Shine a Light’ was also a chance to welcome back producer Mike Spencer (Rudimental, Tom Walker, Ellie Goulding), who produced their second album. Here his Pop experience can be felt in the hooky dance loop, which you can hear becoming one of Oi Va Voi’s trademark live encores. Along with the melodic pop sheen of ‘Lay Your Head’, this song shows the band in an uplifting mood, pointing at the years of high-energy tours which have become their signature. These tracks, and the poignant ‘Josephine’, offer a release - a more escapist mood and a sign of the hope underneath everything.

Oi Va Voi have never been easy to categorise, and they’ve made a point of ignoring genre in favour of more enduring musical and social values. The Water’s Edge is the first album to be released on the band’s own Parallel Skies label, which will sign artists from a diversity of cultures, nations and musics in the coming years. The album title refers to an old custom from the Jewish New Year of going down to the waterside - casting off the baggage of the past, and letting it wash away on the tide. As the first release on this label it’s an expression of the need to put divisions behind us, and find a shared humanity.

Known for their incisive political commentary and genre-blurring soundscapes, the band continues to challenge both the status quo and their own musical boundaries. At Peace promises a fusion of their signature punk ethos with progressive elements, delivering a sonic assault that"s as thought-provoking as it is relentless. As the follow-up to 2017"s Victory Lap, this album is poised to reaffirm Propagandhi"s place at the forefront of politically charged punk rock.

»Carpet Of Fallen Leaves« is an introduction to the folk-pop world of Eddie Marcon. It follows in the footsteps of other collections of Japanese artists on Morr Music, such as yumbo, Andersens, and the »Minna Miteru« compilations. »Carpet Of Fallen Leaves« draws together songs from Eddie Marcon’s twenty-two-year history, including fragile, yet rich in melody material, collected from a prodigious run of limited edition, self-released CD-Rs.

Eddie Marcon is the project of Eddie Corman and Jules Marcon, who met through their involvement in Japan’s underground music scene. Eddie was a member of noise-rock duo Coa, while both Eddie and Marcon were part of psych-rock collective LSD-March. Forming in 2001, Eddie Marcon’s sound is markedly different from these groups, though they do, at times, share a sense of psychedelic dislocation, through the gentle, limpid pace of their songs. But with Eddie Marcon, melody and gentleness is at the music’s core.

They’ve long marked out their own, unique territory within a worldwide community of psych-folk and folk-pop artists; sharing their music through a subterranean network of colleagues and friends, they count groups like The Pastels and The Notwist as their fans, and Eddie has collaborated with the likes of Shintaro Sakamoto, and Aki Tsuyuko (in Tondekebana, and with Marcon and Ippei Matsui in the quartet Wasurerogusa). Eddie Marcon have also recently worked with drummer Ikuro Takahashi, who’s played with groups such as Fushitsusha, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, and Nagisa Ni Te.

Across the songs on »Carpet Of Fallen Leaves«, Eddie Marcon’s songs are performed by Eddie on guitar, organ and vocals, and Marcon on bass; they’re variously joined by Takahashi, Yojiro Tatekawa (drums), Tomoko Kageyama (vibraphone), Yasuhisa Mizutani (flute), Madoka Asakura (vocals), and Ztom Motoyama (pedal steel). The arrangements are pared back to best serve the core of each song, and the playing is gorgeous – fluent but not showy; capable of great intricacy, but aware that simplicity is key to direct communication.

Songs like »Mayonaka No Ongaku« stretch their limbs languidly, the music shivering with beauty as guitar and cymbal drift across Eddie’s poised vocal delivery. »Tora To Lion« began as an improvisation, but it’s become a firm favourite of the group’s fans: as Eddie says, »it has become a very important song for us, to the extent that it can be said to be our representative song.«

Perhaps the most moving thing about »Carpet Of Fallen Leaves«, though, is the way it captures the subtle yet significant moments of everydayness that ask for our attention. »Shoujo«, a song for a beloved cat who passed away, possesses rare emotional resonance. »At the end of the song,« Eddie remembers, »I wanted to have her throat rumbling endlessly.« When the song was cut, a television voice appeared behind the purring, saying ›thank you‹. »For us, it felt like words from Poco-chan, and tears came to our eyes.«

Norman Blake, Bernard Butler und James Grant sind drei der bekanntesten und angesehensten Musiker ihrer Generation. Norman ist die treibende Kraft von Teenage Fanclub, Bernard ist bekannt für seine Soloarbeit und Produktionen mit Suede und James für seine Soloarbeit und Love And Money. Nach einigen sehr gut aufgenommenen Shows, bei denen das Trio eine Auswahl der Songs der anderen spielte, kam das Kollektiv wieder zusammen, um neues Material zu schreiben. Die daraus resultierende Platte ist ein wahres Vergnügen; jeder der Jungs singt abwechselnd mit sympathischem Input seiner Mitspieler. "The Way We Were Vol. 1" ist eine Sammlung bisher unveröffentlichter Demo-Aufnahmen aus Francis Rossis persönlichem Archiv. Das Album vereint frühe Aufnahmen für sein vielbeachtetes zweites Soloalbum "One Step At A Time" (2010) sowie Songs, die später in ihrer endgültigen Version auf einer Reihe von Status Quo-Alben erschienen sind: "Heavy Traffi c" (2002), "XS All Areas" (2004), "The Party Ain't Over Yet" (2005), "In Search Of The Fourth Chord" (2007). Francis Rossi zeigt auf diesem Album eine Vielzahl an Stilen und Ideen. Was die Songs eint, ist, dass sie in der Art und Weise präsentiert werden, in der sie zuerst entstanden sind - roh, aufrichtig und direkt aus dem Herzen vorgetragen, ohne den Einfl uss von Studioveredelung oder kommerziellen Überlegungen. Unter den 17 Songs befi nden sich mit "Scary Mary", "Why I’m Walking", "Load On My Mind", "Can’t Change The World" und "Life Has Changed" zudem fünf Tracks, die nie zuvor außerhalb des Studios zu hören waren.

The Crippled Flower was a post-punk band from Düsseldorf - and they arrived late. However, unlike many young, unsuspecting, hairsprayed hopefuls from that time, in 1985 they could sense that the end of their era was approaching. They knew too much to want to take the world by storm. They were four individualists searching their own way. Each of the band members only found their calling after the time that they had spent together – but that's exactly what makes The Crippled Flower still seem really interesting today, this static energy that does not discharge, but is simply there.

Searching dreamers should sound like that and that's what they were. Singer Phil Elston, for example, had brought his love of Kraftwerk from England to Düsseldorf. Even his bandmates found this strange, but they were also entangled in their own longings. This is because the times were still so crazy and these searchers were "on fire". A fire that glows in the band's recordings.

Listening to the songs today, The Crippled Flower sound like they are hugely at the height of their game; think of Wire, Felt, Scritti Politti or Minimal Compact. The variety of musical themes, as well as different soundscapes, which the band created can only be listened to in amazement. Often, it is only Phil Elston's Sprechgesang that confirms that this is really the same band. However, it was back in 1985 when, importantly, the catalyst that brought the musicians together - the short lived eclectic record store "Heartbeat" in Düsseldorf Bilk - occured. It was there where post-industrial and pop, melodic minimal music and sound attacks awaited those who wanted to discover music by artists and bands they did not yet know.

Cassette releases. All recorded on 4-Track. The Crippled Flower succeeded in this medium. Firstly, with a cassette just entited The Crippled Flower, working from project-like studio recorded sketches. Four more tracks from the short-lived band appeared in 1986 on "A Heartbeat Rendezvous“. A demo tape submitted to Les Disques du Crépuscule, however, did not lead to a worldwide career and so, unfortunately, it was soon over.

Stefan Krausen moved on to the follow-up project Deux Baleines Blanches with Stefan Schneider, which, in 1994, gave rise to the band Kreidler. Krausen was already drumming with the I-Burnettes on AtaTak and much later he studied painting in Munich. Nina Ahlers moved from Düsseldorf to Paris to study art, because in the 80s it was still the case that Paris was the destination of choice for those really wanting to become an artist – and that's what she did. Her work is characterized by a non-academic minimalism focusing on everyday objects. Stefan Schneider remained connected to music. Only Phil Elston, who helped sabotage fox hunts in England and wrote these observant lyrics about environmental destruction and time travel, seems to have escaped the social-media world. Whether he found Kraftwerk-fulfilment in Düsseldorf or moved on disillusioned remains a mystery to us. Zoe Heselton is a British-born poet and musician based in Strasbourg, France. Alone with her Telecaster guitar, she channels her multiple and influences into flamenco-folk-blues fingerpicking techniques, carrying her voice into the strings as she spits out rhymes about change and desire. For this first album, she gathered her beloved and talented friendships around her to sing from places of tenderness and anger, balancing melodies with the band's arrangements and dissonance. Since her songs are stories, spells, poems and prayers, there additional personalities give a crafted power to regenerate from the limbs, surrounded by caretaking souls and generous love-spreading hearts. These musical gems are sea-shanties for sadness, litanies for survival, spoken word bangers for dancing our way through the darkness.

Mannequin Pussy"s music feels like a resilient and galvanizing shout that demands to be heard. Across four albums, the Philadelphia rock band that consists of Colins "Bear" Regisford (bass, vocals), Kaleen Reading (drums, percussion), Maxine Steen (guitar, synths), and Marisa Dabice (guitar, vocals) has made cathartic tunes about despairing times. "There"s just so much constantly going on that feels intentionally evil that trying to make something beautiful feels like a radical act ," says Dabice. "The ethos of this band has always been to bring people together." Their new album, I Got Heaven, which is out March 1 via Epitaph Records, is the band"s most fully realized recording yet. Over ten ambitious tracks which abruptly turn from searing punk to inviting alternative pop, the album is deeply concerned with desire, the power in being alone, and how to live in an unfeeling and unkind world. It"s a document of a band doubling down on their unshakable bond to make something furious, thrilling, and wholly alive. Following the 2019 release of their critically acclaimed third album Patience, Mannequin Pussy returned in 2021 for their EP Perfect. They toured that release relentlessly and added guitarist Maxine Steen to the band"s official lineup. The band changed their entire creative formula, choosing to write together in the studio in Los Angeles with producer John Congleton , over slowly crafting tracks at home.

Nothing is lost on Cash Langdon. It’s something you can hear in the observational lyrics of his last record, 2022’s Sinister Feeling; but on its follow-up, Dogs, you can also hear it in the camaraderie he cultivates playing live with his band Meadow Dust, a sonic energy that gives off the heat of his native Birmingham. The trio’s fuzzy take on heavy country rock has a worn-in no-fussiness that recalls Neil Young & Crazy
Horse – nothing overthought, nothing understated. And like Young, Langdon’s voice is simultaneously earnest and world-weary – but there’s a sense of humor, too, and a resignation to keeping on (“Dogs,” “Magic Again”). Recorded at Portside Studios (the former location of the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound) in just two days, engineer Brad Timko (Dan Sartain, St. Paul and The Broken Bones) captured Langdon and Meadow Dust at their fiercest yet. The title track “Dogs” and side B heater “Dead Dogs” both take inspiration from the wild dogs Langdon encountered in his neighborhood at the time of writing the record, where he wondered about the sick twist of fate that renders one dog a pet and another a threat. Across songs, he examines how oppressive cycles overlap, intersecting the personal and the societal at all times. The heavy yet melodic “Lilac Whiskey Noise” is the heartbeat of the record, written following an active shooter event that Langdon witnessed at work in 2016. It’s an indictment – not of the perpetrator – but of the systems of power that enable such an act. It’s a microcosm for all of the themes on the album, too: the ongoing violence of simply being awake to the world around you, and the resolve to stay awake anyway.
On the crunchy album-closer “Nothing’s Good Anymore,” Langdon sings about overhearing someone say just that – and you can tell he’s tempted to agree. He’s going to find what kernel of beauty he can. Dogs is a sonic map for finding that beauty in just about anything.
