After seven years away, Detroit's supergroup 3 Chairs aka Kenny Dixon Jr., Marcellus Pittman, Rick Wilhite and Theo Parrish, returned in 2013 with 'Demigods', a superb EP that now gets repressed. Known for their loose, free-flowing jam style, the collective blended their distinct individual influences into four unique tracks. The title cut delivers raw, dynamic acid, 'Elephant Ankles' radiates Parrish's jazzy, polyrhythmic soul, '6 Mile' channels Moodymann's mechanical edge with playful bass and 'Celestial Contact' drifts into minimalist, atmospheric territory. The release captures the crew's spirit of freedom and experimentation and proves this cult outfit can craft music that's as fun to make as it is to hear. “Basement Trash was actually the first track we wrote. A funky, fun, hypnotic groover thatlocks you in on the d floor, made for those late nights (or early mornings) in the “basement” of a grungy club. For ‘Yes Bby’ we wanted something that worked on a bigger scale. We dialled up the French rave synths, bigger builds, more drive in the groove and added a cheeky classic vocal chop for the hook.”

It’s the first time something like this has happened for months and months; the first glow of an approaching summer, whatever date the calendar is currently saying it is. The whole thing acts as a curative meditation, miraculously wiping away all the greyness of the past few months. Right now, optimism abounds, outlooks change and your daily soundtrack has shifted from spiky and uptight into a kind of cosmic space where songs ebb and flow and drift on like rivers run on forever towards the glimmering sea. Bliss, right?

If you’re reading this, we’re assuming that you’re the kind of person who views summer as a state of mind rather than a good looking day on the BBC Weather app. With that in mind, we reckon you already know all about Heavenly Recordings’ series of untouchable, utterly essential Balearic Breakfast compilations, each one lovingly compiled by visionary DJ, producer and broadcaster Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy - the genius club legend whose radio show of the same name (broadcast 10am to high noon every Tuesday via Mixcloud) began as an escape route from the pandemic before rapidly building a global community of dedicated Balearican listeners.

Each Balearic Breakfast album has provided a spiritual getaway from the greyness of the everyday through a handpicked selection of glorious, psychedelically coloured, expansive music. It doesn’t matter where on the planet the music hails from, or when it was made, it just matters that it fits like a jigsaw piece into the musical whole. Be it off world jazz music or vocoder led robo-disco music; whether decades old or pressed to vinyl for the first time, everything on these flawless Balearic Breakfast collections just needs to flow together and bring the listener into the sunshine, whatever time of year they’re listening.

Due for release this August, the fourth Balearic Breakfast compilation sees Cosmo take this head trip further than ever before. Canadian disco-soul outfit The Spandettes were in sparkling form when they laid down their stunning covers of Lemuria's Hawaiian groove classics 'All I've Got to Give' and 'Hunk of Heaven.' Both now appear on this limited-edition double 7", which will bring some summer heat to any set you play. Fronted by three powerhouse female vocalists, the cultured band blends lush harmonies with irresistible rhythms as they revive a couple of free-soul gems for a new generation of ears. 'All I've Got to Give' first appeared on a sold-out P-Vine 7" back in 2015 and is a sentimental swooner that is super loved up, while 'Hunk of Heaven', taken from the debut album Spandex Effect, here makes its debut on 45rpm. It's a more upbeat and swooning funk gem with gorgeous vocals.

Indonesian duo Kuntari make music that's so distinctive, they had to devise their own genre: primal-core. On Mutu Beton, multiinstrumentalist Tesla Manaf and percussionist Rio Abror dialog with both history and their tropical surroundings in Bandung, West Java's mountainous capital. Using the cornet and hulusi, a free reed instrument made from a bottle gourd and bamboo pipes, Manaf echoes the bellows of local elephants, orangutans and rhinos, grazing Abror's ancestral Indonesian rhythms with potent overdriven riffs and evocative microtonal chimes.

It's music that's profoundly atmospheric and simultaneously raw, recorded live to fully encapsulate the dynamic and deeply human interaction between the two seasoned players. There are elements of sludge metal, noise and post-hardcore, references to traditional folk music and jazz, and gestures towards sound art, 20th century minimalism and dark ambient, but what Kuntari do is completely idiosyncratic -- it's hardly surprising it needed a similarly unique categorization.

Manaf started Kuntari as a solo project, debuting in 2020 with Black Shirt Attracts More Feather and animating his nimble instrumental improvisations with bold electronic processes and booming synthetic drums. And by the time he recorded 2022's acclaimed Last Boy Picked, his approach had evolved significantly; prioritizing organic sounds, he played prepared cornet and piano, bringing in additional percussionists to help devise a ritualistic rhythm section. Abror was one of those performers, and ended up sticking around, playing on 2023's furious LARYNX/STRIDULA, the stylistic precursor for Mutu Beton. At this stage, the duo have racked up a litany of accolades and collaborated with a spectrum of like-minded artists, from noise deity Keiji Haino to fellow Indonesian free-thinker Rully Shabara, who's best known for his work with Senyawa and avant-garde supergroup Osmium. Mutu Beton plays like a lap of honor, showcasing their most kinetic and most feral recordings to date. Kuntari surpass their own high standards, folding history and geography in on itself and suggesting a trailblazing Indonesian cultural movement that's not restricted by highbrow Western conventions. It's not just automation and technology that drives progression, it's interaction and observation. And there's nothing more primal, or revolutionary, than that.

The legendary 'Rhythm of Life' by American soul star James Mason returns with a series of remixes on this vinyl-only EP. Fresh interpretations come from DJ Mitsu the Beats, Dego and Yukari BB who all do their thing to cuts from sometime Roy Ayers Ubiquity man Mason's 1977 solo album. Dego's jazzy remix of 'Free' and Yukari BB's synth-heavy take on 'Good Thing' are standouts and DJ Mitsu the Beats adds percussive warmth to both 'Free' and 'Mbewe' by infusing the originals with mellow funk and hip-hop grooves. This one packs a super hot jazz-funk punch for the more open-minded dancefloors

From the basement of her beauty salon on Detroit’s West Side, she ran one of the most important Black-owned gospel imprints of the 20th century. At a time when both the music industry and the country were stacked against her, Mrs. Murphy built a sanctuary for soul — a Black woman-owned business and creative hub in volatile times.

2025 marks 20 years of Tectonic, the pioneering dubstep and electronic label founded in 2005 by Bristol’s underground originator, DJ Pinch.
The Tectonic Sound compilation lays down the gauntlet for the future direction of the imprint. Split across 6 x 4-track 12”s, the compilation comprises many producers making their Tectonic debut, including Re:ni, Beatrice M., Yushh, Flora Yin-Wong, and Sicaria, alongside stalwarts like Om Unit, RSD, Peverelist and Kahn & Neek. It’s an exhilarating 24-track journey through experimental, bass-heavy electronic music, with almost all tracks created by the artists specifically with Tectonic's sound in mind - at the intersection where dubstep and techno meet.
