Ginger Root ist das Projekt von Cameron Lew aus Südkalifornien. Seit seiner ersten Veröffentlichung 2017 vermischt der Multi-Instrumentalist, Produzent, Songwriter und visuelle Künstler handgemachten, aber makellos polierten Synth-Pop, Alt-Disco, Boogie und Soul zu einem Sound, den er selbst als "aggressiven Fahrstuhl-Soul" beschreibt. Durch seine Linse als asiatischer Amerikaner, der mit der Musik der 1970er und 80er Jahre aufgewachsen ist, nimmt eine Musik Gestalt an, die insbesondere den kreativen und kulturellen Dialog zwischen japanischem City Pop und seinen westlichen Gegenstücken von French Pop über Philly Soul bis hin zu McCartney der Ram-Ära hervorhebt. SHINBANGUMI ist seine dritte LP und die erste für sein neues Label Ghostly International. Lew zeigt sich auf SHINBANGUMI gelassener, eigenwilliger und bewusster denn je und bringt genau das zum Vorschein, wonach sich Ginger Root anhören und anfühlen sollte. Die Leadsingle "No Problems" fungiert mit singbaren Basslines, schwungvollen Gitarrenriffs und cleveren Keyboard-Hooks als Eröffnungssequenz und als Brücke zu neuem Terrain. A multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter, and visual artist from Southern California, Lew has crafted his project steadily since 2017, inviting a fervent and growing legion of fans into storylines drawn across mediums: captivating albums with accompanying films and globe-spanning tours. The Ginger Root sound _ handmade yet immaculately polished synth-pop, alt-disco, boogie, and soul _ takes shape through Lew's lens as an Asian-American growing up enamored by 1970s and '80s music, specifically the creative and cultural dialogue between Japanese City Pop and its Western counterparts from French Pop to Philly Soul to Ram-era McCartney. He spins his retro-minded influences and proliferates savvily in the present, synthesizing a songwriter's wit, an editor's eye, and a producer's resource into something singular and modern. SHINBANGUMI, his long-awaited third LP, and Ghostly International debut set for physical release in 2024 with a visual album component, translates roughly to a new season of a show. It finds Lew more poised, idiosyncratic, and intentional than ever in a new chapter of life, unlocking "exactly what Ginger Root should sound and feel like," he says. "In terms of instrumentation and musicality, it's the first time that I felt very confident and comfortable with what everything should be comprised of. On the more personal side, I'm coming out of the last four years of writing, touring, and living as a different person; SHINBANGUMI is a platform to showcase my new self."

"Sometimes you have to take sides", singt Adele Ischia im Opener des Debüts der nach ihrem Nachnamen - aber mit kleinem "i"! - benannten Band (nichts zu tun mit der gleichnamigen italienischen Vulkaninsel). Sowas nennt man wohl Statement. Da schadet auch nicht, dass "Sides" mit einem hypnotisch wabernden Gitarrenriff herein prescht, wie es einem Kevin Shields unter die Finger hätte kommen können (Ischia ist hörbar ein My Bloody Valentine-Fan, nicht die einfachste Vorgabe, die man sich als Gitarristin stellen kann). Im Februar erschien die krautrockig groovende Debüt-Single "Sleep", im September kommt das Album! In ihrem Line-Up versammeln sich Leute, die sonst mit anderen Größen der Wiener Indie-Szene auf der Bühne stehen (Endless Wellness, Yukno, Sharktank, Cousines Like Shit...). Tatsächlich sind ischia aber kein Seitenprojekt, sondern die aus jahrelanger Freundschaft und spontaner Assoziation entstandene Band rund um Frontfrau und Namensgeberin Adele Ischia. Auf ihrem Debüt-Album "Leave me to the Future" offenbart sich die breite Palette ihres Sounds, von Krautrock-Grooves bis zu Post-Shoegaze-Psychedelik, doch in dessen Kern steckt dabei stets ein melodiöser Popsong. Und ischia präsentierten einen gänzlich anderen, veritabel psychedelischen Post-Shoegaze-Pop-Sound als gewohnt gehört, entpuppen sich als Band mit breiter dynamischer Vielfalt, beseelt von einer zugänglichen Mischung aus Witz und Melancholie, ziemlich gut für eine Band, die sich erst vor etwas mehr als einem Jahr zusammengetan hat. Neben dem Release ihres Albums werden ischia dieses Jahr aus praktischen Gründen übrigens vor allem gemeinsam mit Endless Wellness auftreten. Luckily, sometimes you don't have to take sides.

The Funeral Portrait stands to represent the outcasts from all walks of life. The misunderstood, the weird, neurodivergent, LGBTQ+, marginalised or otherwise given an unfair hand in life. To offer a sense of community, a place to belong and a space where they can feel safe and accepted for their differences. The band members all grew up as 'the weird kid' who was saved by music and alternative culture, so they now feel obligated to return this favour to the younger generation. This message is shouted to the masses through their over-the-top theatrics and dramatic, almost blown out presentation. The Funeral Portrait believes in the power of Devotion to their Music and to their unwavering fanbase, The Coffin Crew. The ritual is beginning and they want everyone involved. Join them to share your devoutness; excuses for not attending are forbidden.

Still buzzing from the first House of Spirits 12 Inch earlier this summer, RNT tops up our collective high with even more soulful bliss from the mind of Tom Noble. A Brit-funk inspired uptempo heater with spindly guitars, driving bass and a joyous vocal hook, 'Please Take Me There' is another all original modern retro offering that portends the massive gravity of the full LP to come. On the B side, Dutch production wunderkinds Makez reconfigure the tune into a sultry vocal house excursion, and Sizmo takes it to the beach with an extra wavey balearic A Capella dub. End of Summer essential!

Inspired by the cassette packs shared amongst friends on the playgrounds of the 90’s, Tape Pack’s debut release on new imprint, Loom Recordings, aspires to communicate the essence and spirit of golden-era jungle/D&B, updated to incorporate influences from today’s thriving and diverse electronic music community. Too young for the rave in ’95 but buying records and experimenting with production since the early 00’s, the time has finally come for Tape Pack to kick things up a notch and start sharing the output. Classic meets modern – elements from the past, the present and the future, weaving the fabric for LOOM-001, with LOOM-002 and LOOM-003 already in the pipeline.

Loom’s debut release is accompanied by a special event on August 24th, 2024, at The Glove That Fits, London. Artists on the night to include: Datassette, Equinox, Forest Drive West, Kid Drama, L Major and more.

Blakk Tape is the 4th solo mixtape released by underground legend Conway The Machine from Griselda Records on March 27, 2018. With the majority of production handled by Daringer.

After several rare vinyl editions of his releases, Blakk Tape is now officially reissued on black vinyl, limited to 500 copies.

Belarusian post-punk / synth pop group Molchat Doma have always exuded the kind of brutalist aesthetic of the architecture that adorns their album art. It's cold, gray, imposing, industrial and yet there are human hearts beating within those foundations. In the wake of their breakthrough success in 2020, the trio endured a polarity of experiences, from the nadir of an uprooted life and forced relocation away from their native Minsk to the apex of headlining massive shows across the world. It was in this headspace that the band settled into their new home of Los Angeles to finish writing their fourth album Belaya Polosa, a testament to change in difficult times, a love letter to the digital pulse of the `90s, and a technicolor reinvention of the band's somber dancefloor anthems. From the opening synth swell and drum machine throb of "Ty Zhe Ne Znaesh' Kto Ya," to the goth / post-punk austerity of "Son", to the swirling electronic textures mixed with reverb-drenched guitar flourishes, expansive space, and yearning vocals of title track "Belaya Polosa" - that suggests Depeche Mode at their most reflective or The Cure at their most downtrodden - to the sultry and seductive "Chernye Cvety"_ a track reminiscent of Duran Duran's early `90s output in its fusion of dreamy guitars and authoritative mechanized beats _ and the interwoven layers of instrumentation, soaring chorus, and melodic sophistication of "Ya Tak Ustal", it's clear that Molchat Doma are operating on another level. Molchat Doma gained following with earlier albums that sound like third-generation bootlegs of banned recordings from the Eastern Bloc made after a few key entries in the Factory Records catalog were smuggled in from the West. Belaya Polosa propels them into a new direction while retaining their cold minimalist delivery they're known for. The basement grime and dirty tape-head sound of their previous work are now making space for digital luster and shimmering production values. And while Molchat Doma's broadened aural spectrum adds a synesthetic power to Belaya Polosa, the mood remains rooted in stark and unflinching self-reflection. Molchat Doma retain the duality of being both cold and feverish in their delivery while pushing their music into expanded territories through an armory of new textures. The trio continue to harness the sound of harrowing beauty thriving under harsh realities.

Rose Main Reading Room, the fourth full length by Peel Dream Magazine, is a lush, inviting headphones record; the kind of album made to accompany city bus rides and rainy-day solo trips to accidental destinations. The band, whose name nods to the BBC Radio 1 legend John Peel — arbiter of all things underground, quality, and (it must be said) "cool" — has since its inception been a genre-hopping experiment, jumping from motorik krautrock to shoegaze and space age pop, and their newest work is a perfect starting point for the uninitiated, beckoning toward a newfound romance and nostalgia with their catchiest collection of songs to date. Across its fifteen songs, Rose Main Reading Room ultimately proposes a world of marvels and compelling complexity: “Oblast” cheekily prods at mutually assured destruction; “Ocean Life” explores the infiniteness within ourselves; while “R.I.P. (Running in Place)” unpacks an all too familiar stagnation. It’s all part of, and crucial to, Rose Main Reading Room’s transportive power, ever reaching for the wonder and magic of the world we live in.

This year's compilation is once again dedicated to the Bärenherz children's hospice here in Leipzig.
The people in this organization do such incredibly important work, but unfortunately it is all too often "invisible" - because if we're honest, it's not a topic you like to deal with unless you are directly or indirectly affected yourself. And then you realize that the costs of care, accommodation, supplies and psychosocial therapies are only partially covered by health insurance. The children's hospice does not receive any state subsidies, and that's why it is dependent on private donations.

We asked a few old friends from our new hood (now that we are no longer just mentally but also physically located in Leipzig) for tracks, as well as new ones - from Connewitz to Chicago - bridging the gap between Neo-Soul, good old Boom Bap, Modern Funk, Electro, Synthiepop, Breaks and of course, House Music in all its shades.

'Tape 1' is a cut & paste collection of original productions & edits by London's Samson A.K that navigates the gamut of outsider sounds whilst somehow remaining coherent. Apart from the rawness of the music the common thread seems to be its slightly unhinged quality and its irreverent take on the dystopia of modern life.

There's plenty of nods to the sub cultures that have informed Samson A.K along the way but plenty besides, and as moody as it is in places, it's certainly not taking itself too seriously. The genre thing doesn't really work when here but if you like skewed electronics & beats, but also go for antisocial guitar music this will probably connect.

“I want it to feel like you’re right there in the room with us.” And in 10 songs and 40 minutes, Wunderhorse capture the raw power and energy that has set them apart as one of the most formidable live acts of recent years. With rugged hooks, unfiltered noise, and fierce melodic sensitivity, Midas rips up the script of traditional second albums and establishes the band as an endlessly addictive and rousing generational talent.
In late 2022, the release of their debut album Cub saw singles ‘Purple’ and ‘Leader of the Pack’ dominate radio airwaves. Landmark performances filling Glastonbury’s Woodsies Tent (FKA John Peel Stage) and selling out London’s Kentish Town Forum months in advance followed tours with Pixies and Fontaines D.C. and stadium appearances with Sam Fender, signalling the band’s arrival as one of the most prominent and exciting new guitar acts in the UK.
With Grammy Award-winning producer Craig Silvey (The Rolling Stones, The National, Florence + The Machine) on board for their sophomore record, the band looked to do something different. Their goal – in the very same studio that Nirvana put In Utero to tape and PJ Harvey recorded the Mercury Prize-nominated Rid of Me – was to push themselves outside of their comfort zones.
“There’s absolutely no faking on this record,” ends Slater, “it's not supposed to be perfect; it’s supposed to be a snapshot, even if it is a bit of an ugly portrait. That's how it was then, and that's how you're gonna see it.” And it sounds like you’re right there in the room with them.

Love Rudiments is a meditation by Ty Segall on his first love: the drums. Known popularly as a singing guitar player, he generally starts the recording of his songs by laying down a drum track. Love Rudiments kicks off with drums and percussion then adds a few other percussive and production aspects. It travels a great journey in this configuration. However, Love Rudiments wasn"t written or performed to present as some kind of solo drums album - it"s just another music album, with vibes (figurative as well as literal), feels, a theme and a through-line. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Ty"s made an instrumental album of percussive music that rides the wild surf of a waxing-then-waning love affair - from the first blinding look, to the eventual recognition, that look back at love"s rudiments, viewed from beyond and outside that seemingly infinite sensation And why not? Drums are a melody instrument too. Ty plays them with precision and sensitivity, delving deep into the textures of timpani, vibraphone, xylophone, percussion and e-drums, all of them occupying space within the luxe stereo spread of the drum kit. In the process, a psychological space is opened - a private emotional location where only two can meet. Love Rudiments reembodies the passion and compulsion that drives all of Ty Segall"s music in a suite of moments played on orchestral batterie to explore the most delicate passages of human interaction - playing on the bones of love.

Experimental hardcore outfit Rats Will Feast draws their musical landscape from extreme aggression and hallucinatory chaos. Hailing from Jyväskylä, Finland, the band has been touring actively in its current form since 2018. Varying between crushing hardcore, noisy psychedelia and more mellow postrock sounds on their 2019 album Scarcity, 2020 EP Songs of a Racehorseand 2021's Malady, the band's new album Hellhole continues the development of the bands destructive chaotic hardcore sound. Hellhole is the culmination of the band's all the previous work. It's a bruising demonstration of the bands core sound: chaotic rhythms, battering drums, screeching vocals, varied guitar melodies and crushing riffswith gritty low frequencies. Characteristic of the band, the album is defined by the twisted song structures and desolate, emotional lyrics which deal with the artificiality of the modern world. Hellhole is the culmination of the band's all the previous work. It's a bruising demonstration of the bands core sound: chaotic rhythms, battering drums, screeching vocals, varied guitar melodies and crushing riffswith gritty low frequencies.
