Simm/Medium - A Prosperity in Obscured Deception

Eraldo Bernocchi is SIMM – one of the originators of Dark Hop. The
Italian musician and producer has worked with Harold Budd, Mick
Harris, Bill Laswell, and Robin Guthrie, and is a versatile, masterful
studio composer, as well as a renowned live performer and improviser.
Odessa’s Medium (Igor Oklander, Pavel Kostyuk, and DJ Koss) are the
newest sensation out of Ukraine in the world of drum & bass. Their
technical production ability and live drum & bass show are unmatched
in the current era. Nailed is a classic, black silk creeper, a film noire
dungeon score sound. Eraldo’s distantly familiar horrorscore guitars
are backed with a stomping broken beat, and the deepest, darkest sub
to be found in the genre. Nailed is SIMM at the height of Bernocchi’s
dark power – crawling, surveilling, hunting. No Questions is what it
says it is on the wrapper – an absolute mauling 2018 dark hop
MONSTER – without question. The crew has cooked up a bass drop of
titantic, megalithic proportions, which must be heard to be believed!
Stepping out of their normative drum & bass format, they play with the
notion of half time drum & bass, while keeping it 100% dark hop tempo.

02.07.2019

Regis is the founder of one of techno’s most influential and
uncompromising labels, Downwards Records. His inimitable hard
techno sound, and collaborations with Surgeon as British Murder Boys,
have cemented his legacy as the definition of the Birmingham techno.
Luke Lund is one of the Finland’s fastest rising young composers, with
the ability to move seamlessly between the marshes of dark hop to the
silkiness of deep techno. His own Terranean Recordings label has
been fearlessly documenting the Finnish underground and beyond
since 2010. King Pin Frankie is treasure untold – a live Regis recording
from New Year’s Eve 1997 in Chicago. Pounding classic minimal TR
909 with an accelerating/decelerating arppegiator make this A side a
serious find, with distorted synth moving platforms occurring as the
track winds out. TIP! Luke’s Scourge is an electronic composition
masterpiece – pinning a straight kick underneath a shifting snare,
leaving the question open – is it techno? Is it dark hop? Whatever it
may be, the bass underneath tells it big and fills up a subwoofer.

SHING & TSÉ

Décalé
28.06.2019

“The year is 1982. Rita Mitsouko has not yet recorded its eponymous debut album. The pile of ashes that once was Disco is still smoking on the field of Comiskey Park. New Wave is a phrase, Post-Punk Rock a thing. In France, young musicians dream of New York City – some with more devotion than others. Lapassenkoff are to early 1980’s downtown New-York what seminal New Wave act Marie Et Les Garçons (who met John Cale on their way to CBGB) are to the city’s musical scene in the late 1970’s: an unexpected cousin from Lyon.

Indeed, going through Shing ‘n’ Tsé! sometimes feel like an impromptu meeting between John Lurie and Tom Tom Club in the basement of some French record store. If we press pause for a minute, a question comes to mind: how on earth such a unique blend of funk, post-punk, jazz fusion & hip hop (!) – more easily associated with, say, The Mudd Club, than with Les pentes de la Croix-Rousse – made its way to the brains of three French musicians?

The answer probably lies in a Swiss chalet, some 40 kilometers away from Zurich. Sent there by the wise people from Mosquito (the label which also gave Ramuntcho Matta and Carte de Séjour the opportunity to record their first album), the band experiences Alpine ennui and mysterious neighbours (a certain Carlos Peron, for instance). That is probably during this stay in Swiss meadows that they opened a Pandora’s box called experimental music, leading them into recording the mind-blowing sample-based – and accidentally proto-everything – M Le Maudit,, that would later grace Belgian airwaves via the famous Liaisons Dangereuses radio show.

But if we’re looking for a bigger picture, M Le Maudit is just an example of how inventive their approach to music was. This compilation is a testimony of a decade-long feverish flirt between the Lyon trio and dance music. From the infectious electric boogie cuts Shing A Ling and Roadie to the somehow euro-house-fuelled Ma Poubelle Angelina, via many unclassifiable yet iconic songs like Bossi Le Bosseman or Fièvres, Frissons, the compilation demonstrates one thing: Lapassenkoff took the road less traveled by and contributed to a different history of French Pop music.”

The inventors of lo-fi indie rock return with a 15-track blast of melodic melancholy, all delivered by the smudged middle finger of Dinosaur Jr original Lou Barlow…

“The auteur of the subterranean lovesick blues.” Houston Press

Their first studio album since 2013’s ‘Defend Yourself’ and their first release with Fire Records, Lou Barlow, Jason Loewenstein and Bob D'Amico return with a smorgasbord of beautifully dysfunctional tunes harking back to their finest college rock anthems.

It’s Barlow at his introverted songwriting best; matter-of-factly delivering a stream of self-questioning stories, punctuated by detuned guitars, spine-tingling time changes and throwaway one liners.
A grainy post grunge postcard wrapped in bittersweet melodies with an aftertaste that’s pure heartbreak.
More songs about growing up wrong for those who continue to act surprised at life itself - all illegibly handwritten and lovingly submitted to vinyl.

Type-303 - Ghost in the 303

DJ Pierre’s legendary Jack Trax Records returns with a delicious set of raw acid tracks from Finnish producer Type-303, who made his 12” wax debut on Posthuman’s I Love Acid imprint, with a release on Lobster-distributed ProForm this past fall.

“What is the Time?” kicks things off with a jacking beat reminiscent of the classic Chicago acid house sound, answering the question with “it’s time to jack”.

Next up is “Sound of Future”, alluding to Phuture’s classic “Acid Track” with a tough, driven beat and acid line that builds up to a psychedelic frenzy of claps, snares, and rides.

The title track, “Ghost in the 303”, follows suit with more of Type-303’s punchy percussion, interjected by moments of frenzied 16th claps, paired with an eerie, otherworldly pad taking the listener deep into the soul of the machine, the classic TB-303.

Last is “Control”—filled with dreamy yet slightly dissonant pads and a wispy breakbeat-inspired snare line that provides a deep, introspective conclusion to this acid laced journey.

Red Channel - Crazy Diamonds EP

Melody (vocals, synth), Casey (vocals, synth), Bill (bass), Scott (guitar) and Marcus (drums) united through a shared post-punk sensibility and began experimenting with some angular drum and guitar give-and-take, layered with duelling synth refrains.

Over this Melody and Casey worked-up their vocal harmonies through impulse, developing an interplay reminiscent of The Go Go's at both their most serene and severe. The pairs vocals drift through each track, punctuating the profound and guiding us through each song's uncanny terrain. After a busy year of local shows and bouts of instinct-first songwriting, Red Channel chose a number of their most resonant songs to record with Andrew Schubert at Golden Beat. These were subsequently mixed by Eric Carlson and then mastered by John Hannon for this debut 7' EP on Upset The Rhythm entitled 'Crazy Diamonds'.

The title track launches the listener through a stratosphere of cascading notes, swoonsome lyrical turns and tack-sharp pivots in rhythmic practice. 'Crazy Diamonds' is an exhilarating rush of a song, both wistful and defiant. Melody explains that it is 'about the forever fluctuating reality that weaves in and out of ecstasy, loneliness, yearning and destruction. It's about women being free from a superficial beauty, it's about the cessation of ideals and power worship.'  'Giver' is a similarly sprightly yet pointedly questioning track, 'alone in your room, alone with your thoughts, of sleepless shadows, but what do I get' sing Casey and Melody in spooked unison.

'Demons' swirls with minimalist pop moves, a trailing backing vocal and a tumbling bass motif, whilst a dream-like quality pervades the guitar and keyboard lines. Melody then peppers the song with references to extinguished lights, evil forces, bags of sugar, floods and heaven on earth, drawing us so close that we enter the vision too. 'Slowness', which brings this debut EP is a close, is another triumph of illusory lyrical association and punchy gesture. In fact the band sound 'caught in a fragment, non-corporeal' throughout all the four tracks. Opalescent passages freewheel into splintered eruptions, there's a duality constantly in play, 'somebody dies, somebody's born'.

The songs collected here are manifestly catchy, conjured in cyclical patterns that are distorted by a desire that tends towards stream of consciousness. It's this willingness to wake-up in the unreal and see each moment reflected in the mirror which really sets apart Red Channel's first record.

Régis Renouard Larivière - Contrée

Cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin, November 2018
Mastering: Mathias Durand

Translations: Valérie Vivancos

Coordination GRM: François Bonnet

SIDE A
Contrée (2013), 20'

SIDE B
Allégeance volatile (2002), 8'46
Esquive (2010), 10'10

The mastering of these tracks was done by Mathias Durand at François Lê Xuân's Studio 101, in Paris. I would like to warmly thank him for this.

Allégeance volatile and Esquive each tackle the same issue in their own way. Overcoming time: whether it be successive, additional, enumerative, or repetitive. However, there is nothing here about the ensuing nature of so-called "repetitive" music. These are types of high-end music. And it is more about insistence, the obstinacy of an individual who keeps knocking on a door that will never open.

Allégeance's rustic drumming, talkative, acidulous, colourful and overarticulated, with almost clownish desinences, eventually dies out in this very respite. The iterative and puffy shimmering of Esquive with its dull, thin and precise sounds, shifts and is engulfed into another sonic world — which appears as a gaping and collapsed response to this prime insistency.

This is, indeed, a 'volatile allegiance' and 'avoidance' from the sonic to the musical elements: the musical phenomenon anticipated and pursued as the non-sound of sound — or, in other words, the void of sound. This seems to be the lesson of the concrete attitude in music. Such is the kind of questioning that stirs the composer.

He returns with another title: Contrée, which, once again, speaks of a counter-event. Here, the movement is broader, more generous, more confident. Time spreads and stretches out. What seems to be a landscape of entanglements, trajectories, influx, masses and points emerges. "Something" rises and presents itself out of the sounds - these escaping beings, these "relatively short combustion flames " (Schaeffer).

The piece consists of five consecutive and uninterrupted parts: Entrée and Stance I — Véhémence de l'air and Stance II — Grande Allure. It is the central section of an electroacoustic triptych with Sables (2011) as the first and Nil (2017) as the last.

Fantastic Twins - Lost In Germany

The fourth AF Trax release is a three-track EP from our long time ally The Fantastic Twins, who has the following to say about her EP:

This EP is a small collection of works I crafted over the past couple of years in the process of working on my live show. I have been performing versions of these tracks countless times and yet never played them twice the same way. To me, they have been material in constant motion, so shaping them into a 'finished' form was a risky challenge. Something I was also wary of - would it mean they would become set in stone Would it mean I'd have to somehow 'rationalise" the music - via the mind - as opposed to letting it run into the wildness of its physical live experiences

Whilst editing these tracks into a format that could be released, I realised that instead of shaping them into the mould my mind first intended to give them, I could in fact use the power they revealed each time I performed them to an audience and inject some of that energy - as much as it is possible to capture and recreate it in the studio - back into this EP. Then of course, it meant letting go on things I usually like to control more, and better.

But isn't it the power of music to let it take you where you didn't plan to go And how incomplete would the music be if our inspiration didn't feed off the collective experience of dancing to music together I've lost myself (and my twins) many times throughout the process - not only on German soil - I have sometimes landed in the wrong place, but I may have found one answer yet in the form of another question. Why are we here if we can't dance

That reminds me of the words of Pina Bausch 'Dance, dance or we are lost'. Lost in our internal struggles as individuals (or imaginary twins). Lost in a society where our relation to the other is often marked by fear, power or violence. We feel the need to resist. Yet nowadays, taking a political stance as an artist is too often being instrumentalised as another tactics or accessory to gather more popularity, reducing the political message to nothing else but a branding attempt. Isn't it anyway the power of capitalism to assimilate everything, even contradictory or once-upon-a-time subversive voices All to end up on a 'Rave' or 'Feminist' H&M t-shirt. Slogans that have been emptied of their initial force and substance, now replaced by their commercial value. I strongly doubt that more empty words poured in vain on social media will help us much. But, like Pina Bausch, like JD Twitch, I have always firmly believed in dancing as a physical, social and fundamental act that leads us to share a common space with others and embrace otherness. Standing together, dancing together when everything else forces us to divide.

AI UNIT (Christian von Borries and Andreas Dzialocha) - Land der Musik - The Graz AI Score

A world premiere of AI-generated symphonic music!

All three audio files are compiled from two live recordings with different microphone settings. The cover image is generated by algorithms trained with the following image searches: migration, mediterranean, boat, Libyan coast, EU. Different search engines were used. »Land der Musik« celebrated its world premiere on 7 October 2018 at steirischer herbst '18 - volksfronten in Graz, Austria. Commissioned and produced by steirischer herbst in cooperation with ORF Musikprotokoll.

A1. soundalikeStrauss (an audio reverse-engineering tool is used after the initial cross-fade) A2. AIstrauss (algorithms are trained with midi-files of Johann Strauss waltzes) B1. AImahler (algorithms trained with midi-files of Gustav Mahler symphonies) B2. (untitled)

A new standard of beauty. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms can now group photo pixels or audio waves into meaningful categories. This is similar to how our brain operates, yet the outcome seems distinctively non-human. At the same time it appears that the sphere of our appreciation and imagination may just have expanded. The question of whether we are still able to see and hear the difference between automated and so-called autonomous artifacts should be left to historians. On the other hand, producing this analog audio record with this image on the front cover really is an antagonism. A more appropriate medium might be a tracking chip of your online and offline activities generating customized results in real time—be it images, music, or whatever.

If AI is communist (to quote the libertarian Silicon Valley entrepreneur Peter Thiel), then this statistics-based technology might actually reinforce centralized monopoly capitalism and the coming crisis of inequality, just as it might accelerate into Deleuze's notion of the Society of Control. But it might also be seen and heard as a demo, a new standard of beauty, for the redistribution of wealth and for solidarity; in short as a utopia freed from exploitation, nationalism, and racism, liberating us from our own perception of this world. »Land der musik - The Graz AI Score« demonstrates how machine learning might help us to finally create the perfect Austrian national music identity. Yet in doing so, our ultimate aim is to get rid of the construction of national identities all together.

»God created man because he dreamed him. / But man forgot God and created the machine because he dreamed it. / At the end of the twentieth century, however, the machine has forgotten man. / Who could predict who or what she dreams of« (Friedrich Kittler)

We Are Mattimatti. Two Mattis Living In Different Countries - Sweden (malmö) And Germany (berlin). We Travel Around The World Playing Music While Asking Ourselves, 'who Are We'. The Answer Seems To Change Just As Our Surroundings Do. But The Music Stays With Us And So Does The Friendship. It Is Cliché That It's Hard To Put A Label On Music. And To Say It Has Almost Become A Cliche Itself. But Whole Meaning Of Music Is To Listen To It And Create Your Own World By It. To Create One's Own World One Needs Space. Space That Is Not Interrupted By Either Style Or Defining Categories. Mattimatti Is An Attempt To Step Into That Space Creating Music That Is Solely Built On Improvisation. Our Music Is An Invitation To Places Not Yet Known, Where Rhythmic, Suggestive And Meditative Soundscapes Meet The Present Moment. Music Represents Many Things For Us. First Of All, It Is In-sync With Our Friendship, When The Relationship Is Stuck So Is Our Music. Our Music Is Therapy. We Need To Be Authentic With The Music In Order To Have A Real Friendship And The Other Way Around. As Friends And Musicians We Welcome The Unexpected. This Has Lead Us To Places Where We Never Would Have Ended Up In If It Weren't For The Music. In That Way, Music And Life Walk Hand In Hand. If We Dare To Be Real About It. We Are Living In A World Full Of Confusion When It Comes To Identity. It's Easy To Loose Yourself. All Of A Sudden You Are Standing There Playing Music But Missing The Music At The Same Time, Or Hanging Out With Your Best Friend While Missing The Friendship. We Are Trying To Stay Connected. It Is A Constant Task. We Lose It But Then We Find It Again, Just Like Everybody Else. Sometimes It Ends Up In Music For The Moment. Sometimes It Ends Up In The Shape Of A Record. We Met On The Streets Of Berlin In Spring 2013 While One Of Us Was Playing On The Streets. After We Played The First Time Together, There Was No Question That We Would Travel A Musical Journey Together From That Day. Mattimatti Was Initiated. Lali Puna - Being Water

Lali Puna

Being Water

12inchMORR166-EP
Morr Music
26.03.2019

With "Being Water" Lali Puna refine their distinctive take on pop and electronics, pushing the boundaries towards classical songwriting. The four songs - equally affecting and catchy as self-reflected and aloof - are complemented by the airy tripiness of a remix by Dave DK (Kompakt, Pampa Records).

Although singer Valerie Trebeljahr wrote "Being Water" mostly by herself, being backed by bandmates Christian Heiß and Christoph Brandner, she rejects the idea of authorship: "Nothing comes out of myself. I'm a sampler: I write music because I listen to music. And I write lyrics because I read". Accordingly, topics and references of "Being Water" vary quite widely: "Who's That Genius" pays tribute to Virginia Woolf and Madonna - and questions why the term 'genius' is still connoted primarily with maleness. The title track refers to the famous Bruce Lee quote "Be formless, shapeless, like water" - but here it is turned upside down: It was Hito Steyerl's video work "Liquidity Inc." that got Valerie's attention, re-reading the quote as a neoliberal paradigm. In contrast, a title like "For Only Love" might sound a little naive as Valerie claims - but: "It surely won't be hate that will save us all". The lyrics were written after watching Obaidah Zytoons and Andreas Dalsgaards documentary "The War Show".

"Diversity is queen" - this goes for the music as well. While the dreamy pop of "Who's That Genius" or the catchy guitar loops of "Being Water" are in the same vein of Lali Puna's earlier albums, the free-floating piano chords and tricky rhythm patterns of "Beatx" in some ways mark new territory as Valerie explains: "I am very proud of this song because it is so fiddly. I thought that was something reserved for men".

Koehler - Melencolia V b/w Invidiosa

Koehler was hurled headlong flaming from the ethereal sky. This is his first offering for the ESP Institute. Side A recalls the hazy memory of an ear-worm chant heard over a decade ago on the streets of Thailand, a melody that since haunted the artist and has finally been exorcised by his own hand in the shape of 'Melencolia V'. Somewhere between an enchanted bashment and a sailor's watering hole, Koehler found a gargantuan kick drum that lands solely on the 4, slammed it together with a wide pulsing bassline and brutalized Dancehall snare, then laced it all up with his elusive synth melody. Add to this a generous sprinkle of finely-ground cosmic dust and we're all tripping the light fantastic. On the flip side, the artist buckles up for a rough and rapid-paced journey with 'Invidiosa' — a relentless snare scrapes, gouges and corrodes over 7 minutes, coupling with a simplistic bass loop and swiftly marauding through a demented assembly line, accumulating various nuts and bolts of instrumentation along the way — an undeniable dancefloor exciter for those hours when the club becomes unhinged, dancing becomes raving, and slightly more audacious folk can channel their inner truth. These two songs will have you question your existence.

'Sometimes you wake up and you've just lost the plot. Is life great or is it not Should I eat more fruit Is buying diamonds rude' Ca$hminus are asking all the wrong questions. After their debut on Bordello A Parigi last year and a recent appearance on Credit 00's Rat Life imprint, the Belgo-Australiana duo unleash a collection of their wildest works to date. The package opens with 'Atlandwehr', a jaunting affair that could have risen from the filthy Berlin Landwehr canal, only to dissolve again after six frenzied minutes, leaving nothing but a trace of bubbles on the skanky surface. The gritty 'La Foire', a grimy take on Belgian new beat, fuses raw, stepping drums with a playfully gnarly synth line. Luckily 'De Vlasmarkt' is lurking around the corner: this is the awkwardly joyous soundtrack to an annual phenomenon in Ghent, where young and old folks gather on the 'Vlasmarkt' square after a heavy night of boozing, to collectively gaze at at the sun coming up whilst drinking Irish coffees until they drop. G-funk meets electro on the flipside, where Cora from Chengdu showcases her vocal swag on '' to a backdrop of supreme subbass and rattling beats. Man of the moment Cornelius Doctor of HARD FIST fame (the adventurous imprint he runs with Tushen Rai) delivers a beast of a rework that both hypnotizes and elevates. The acapella leaves you in charge of your own destiny.

The Prize Was Thousands Of Dollars Worth Of Gigs And A Tuck And Roll Kustom Pa System, Which The Band Put To Use As They Moved Forward Into 1968, Brimming With Confidence. A Roving Capitol A&r Man Caught Their Show In Cadillac, Michigan, And Encouraged Them To Write Some Original Songs And Go Into The Studio. So In 1968 That's What They Did. `dream World' And `with You' Were Recorded At A Studio In Grand Rapids And The Session Turned Out Exceptionally Well. "it Just Floored Me That We Didn't Sit Down And Write Some More Songs," Says Aquilino, "because I Thought We Did A Pretty Good Job." `dream World' Is Particularly Great With A Soulful Lead Vocal, An Insistent Fuzz Guitar Line, Waves Of Hammond Organ, A Catchy, Harmonized Chorus And An Insistent Dance Groove. Shades Of The Doors, The Young Rascals, The Blues Magoos And Src. A Mixdown Of The Tape Was Forwarded To Their Contact At Capitol Records, But Ultimately No Deal Was Signed. "we Were Just Starting To Separate From High School," Remembers Aquilino. "it Was The Start Of That Transition. I Was Class Of '67, They Were Class Of `68. There Was The War In Vietnam. You Could Go To College To Avoid The Draft. It Was A Lot Of Decisions And I Guess What Happened Is Nothing Really Happened From Us Recording. I Mean They Liked It, They Made Us An Offer, But I Think That The Parents Weren't Really Happy With That. I Think That There Was Some Dissent In The Band Too." The Conspiracy Broke Up In Early 1969 And The Tape Of The Only Original Songs They Ever Played Remained Unreleased And Unheard Until 2018, When Soriano Brought The Original 1" 8-track Session Tape Into Earthling Studios In El Cajon, California, Where It Was Mixed And Mastered By Mike Kamoo For This Release. "getting This Out On Vinyl - It's What We Dreamed Of!" Aquilino Grins. "even If It Took Fifty Years To Happen!" Mike Stax

Rasputin's Stash - Make up Your Mind / You Are My Everything

Rescued from a haze of drugs, alcohol and questionable women comes a potent blend of heavy Chicago Funk, Modern Soul & Psychedelia. Influential recordings from the group's sought-after Funk classics have been sampled by Beck, The Chemical Brothers, Jim Jones, Raekwon & Leaders of The New School.

Previously unreleased Rasputin's Stash from the forthcoming Stash album due out in April. 'Make Up Your Mind' is a contagious rhythm with Jimi Hendrix-style fuzzed out guitar riffs echoing sweet soul vocals and a brass section tight enough to please any Tower of Power fan. On the b-side is a slow-jam Soul-Steppers classic 'You Are My Everything'

Cut directly to vinyl from the recently found master tapes, this music presents material from the band at their artistic peak and the last recordings before Rasputin's Stash members went on to record Crystal Winds First Flight and Attitude, Belief & Determination
