This collection, featuring seven pieces from 2011 to 2015, celebrates Noah Creshevsky's 70th year with a fittingly life-affirming and masterful verve. An award-winning composer who has studied with Nadia Boulanger and Luciano Berio, he began composing electronic music in 1971, using the power of circuitry, tape and then digital technology to create a "hyperreal" musical world in which recordings of human performers, both vocalists and instrumentalists, are juxtaposed and recombined in compositions which span eras, cultures and genres. His use of expanded musical palettes arises from an aesthetic of inclusion, guided by an open spirit and an expansive musical sense. The combination of the emotional power of human performances with the precision of computers create real-beyond-real super-performances of surprising control and virtuosity, resulting in a hypothetical and yet very real music, full of drama, humor, and tenderness. This album, Creshevsky's second release on EM, following the 2004 "Tape Music" compilation, gives ample evidence of both his mastery of digital technology and his profound, empathetic musical instincts. "Recorded in 1959, Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges is heralded as one of the best of Mulligan’s recorded pairings with fellow instrumentalists. On this date, the two saxophonists are joined by a solid rhythm section of Claude Williamson (piano), Buddy Clark (bass) and Mel Lewis (drums), splitting the repertoire across three originals each from Mulligan and Hodges. The two complement the other throughout with the exception of Mulligan’s ‘What’s the Rush’, where the baritonist sits out altogether in favour of Hodges’ alto taking the spotlight.

"Under the guidance of Norman Granz, Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan collaborate for the first time as the primary horns on Getz Meets Mulligan in Hi-Fi. Recorded in 1957, this record offers the unique opportunity to listen to the two jazz stars trade instruments on the first three tracks (‘Let's Fall in Love’, ‘Anything Goes’, and ‘Too Close for Comfort’) with Getz on baritone sax and Mulligan on tenor. The music gels with the help of a world-class rhythm section featuring Lou Levy on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. While a massive musical success, the duo never recorded again in this quintet format, making this record a rarity.

Die Psych-Rocker aus Cincinnati kehren mit ihrem vierten Album zurück und drehen die texturierten Synthesizer und spacigen Melodien voll auf, um ihr bisher shoegaze-lastigstes Album zu schaffen. Das zentrale Nervensystem von In The Pines befindet sich in The Lodge - einem alten Freimaurertempel, der als Mehrzweckraum gegenüber von Cincinnati in Dayton, Kentucky, umfunktioniert wurde. Die Band bewohnt eine Ecke des Kellers in diesem weitläufigen Labyrinth, wo sie Foleytronics betreibt - einen kleinen Laden für Vintage-Profi-Audio-Reparaturen und einer der wenigen Läden weltweit, der Vintage-Digitaleffekte reparieren kann. Ein natürliches Nebenprodukt dieses Ladens ist das Studio in Bandmitglied Peter Foleys Keller, ein Raum voller verschiedener Vintage-Effekte, Bandmaschinen und Synthesizer, in dem sie Sunbeam Dream vollständig aufgenommen und produziert haben. Alle Aufnahmegeräte, die für ,Sunbeam Dream" verwendet wurden, wurden vor dem sicheren Tod gerettet, repariert und von der Band selbst wieder funktionsfähig gemacht, die sich der Grenzen dieser Geräte bewusst war (und diese gerne ausnutzen wollte). Ähnlich wie beim Konzept von Oulipo in der Poesie und Mathematik entstehen Kreativität und Problemlösungsfähigkeiten aus einem klaren Verständnis und ständiger Überprüfung der Grenzen. Der Aufnahmeprozess ermöglichte es In the Pines zum ersten Mal, sich mit den kleinsten Details zu beschäftigen - ganze Tage wurden damit verbracht, den richtigen Akustikgitarrensound zu finden, nur um schließlich auf ein Stück Klebeband zu kommen, das über die Saiten geklebt wurde; Stunden, die in anderen Studios als Luxus gelten würden, wurden damit verbracht, verschiedene Beckenkombinationen für einen Refrain oder eine Bridge auszuprobieren. Genau wie bei ihrer Reparaturwerkstatt schuf die Band einen Aufnahmeraum, in dem Hyperfokus und Liebe zum Detail nicht nur erlaubt, sondern ausdrücklich erwünscht sind. Das Ergebnis dieser obsessiven Kontrolle ist das bislang ausgereifteste Werk von In The Pines. Sunbeam Dream hebt den Shoegaze-beeinflussten Psych-Rock der Band auf ein neues Niveau. Mit einer stärkeren Betonung der Synthesizer, die sich von einem strukturellen Element zu einem Hauptcharakter im Sound der Band entwickeln (dank eines wiederbelebten Mellotrons von 1971), reiht sich die Band in die Tradition großartiger und kraftvoller Alben wie ,A Northern Soul" von The Verve oder dem selbstbetitelten Album von The Charlatans (UK), bei denen die Produktion der beiden Bands ihrer kreativen Vision zu entsprechen schien. Horace Silver’s 1962 tour of Japan had a deep impact on the pianist who dedicated his album The Tokyo Blues to his Japanese fans. With his quintet of Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, Gene Taylor, and John Harris Jr., Silver combined a “Japanese feeling in the melodies with the Latin feeling in the rhythms.” This stereo Tone Poet Vinyl Edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, and packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket.

The Verve Remixed volume debuted in 2002, its concept – inviting top DJs and producers to select songs from the label’s storied vaults – was an instant success, introducing classic jazz recordings to a new generation of listeners and kickstarting a global trend of jazz-electronic fusion.

Now back on vinyl for the first time in 20 years, with the series’ inaugural project VerveRemixed we hear what happens when Master’s at Work meet Nina Simone, and Dzihan & Kamien take on Billie Holiday. Experience the interpretations of renowned remixers with this refreshed physical format.

Originally issued on Hut Records in June 2000, Alone With Everybody was eagerly anticipated, as it was Ashcroft's first recordings since the demise of the group he founded and led, The Verve - This re-issue replicates the 2000 UK first pressing and is available on audiophile 180g double vinyl in gatefold sleeve.

Opening the album with its string overture, "Song For The Lovers" signalled Ashcroft's intent immediately. Intensely melodic, anthemic, it picked up exactly where The Verve's 1997 multi-platinum album Urban Hymns left off. Lifted as a single, it reached No 3 in the UK and spent most of the summer on the charts.

Recorded at Olympic Studios and Metropolis in London, big, bold and frequently beautiful, Alone With Everybody raced to No 1 in early July; it played to all of Ashcroft's strengths, memorable hooks, catchy choruses, beats subtly influenced by dance music; the brass-blazing bold hoedown of "Money To Burn" was the album's second single; other highlights include the ballad "Slow Was My Heart", the upbeat joy of "C'Mon People (We're Making It Now)" and the reflective, string-enrobed "You On My Mind In My Sleep".

You're strolling down an alley in New Orleans or Brooklyn late at night and this sound jumps out at you -- rock & roll, classic rhythm & blues, sung and played with verve, personality, and joy. The dance floor is full. You stroll in and hear sounds that wouldn't have sounded out of place on the legendary Specialty Records of the 1950s and '60s.

Indeed one of the eight cuts onWrite It Down, the new album fromJackson& The Janks, comes from the repertoire of rhythm & blues singer Mamie Perry, first recorded in 1959. The rest areJacksonLynch originals, inspired by his time living and playing music in the Crescent City. Theuniquearrangementsof the band itself have deep roots in NOLA, too, with Matt Bell (Esther Rose) on lap steel, Craig Flory (Tuba Skinny) on bass saxophone and Sam Doores (The Deslondes) sharing backing vocals while trading-off on drums and keys.

Jacksonand the Janks have performed at the Brooklyn Folk Fest, Blackpot Festival (Louisiana), and Oldtone Festival (New York) and did a video session for tastemaker series GemsOnVHS and Jackson a solo session for Paste. Its residency on Fridays in Brooklyn (when they're not on tour) packs the house week after week with fans and folks drawn in by the word-of-mouth buzz and the sound.

Keys To The World, Richard Ashcroft's third solo album, landed in January 2006 and quickly crept like a mile-a-minute vine to number two, whereto it clung for some time. Produced by long-time collaborator Chris Potter, it marks the former Verve frontman's last solo full-length for ten years, before its later supersession by 2016's These People. The LP leans heavy on orchestration, its string arrangements by Julian Kershaw performed by the London Met Orchestra, and electric viola parts from Bruce White sallying over its songwritten entirety. Sonically, Ashcroft dialled down the bombasticity of earlier outings for an analgesic, string-swept sound, dividing the lauds: praised by some for its melodic clarity maturer songwriting, others found it all too safe, though that didn't stop it going Platinum in the UK.

'Bird and Diz' is the legendary collaboration between two jazz giants: saxophonist Charlie Parker (nicknamed "Bird") and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie (often referred to as "Diz") key figures in the development of bebop. Their partnership was pivotal in shaping the sound and direction of bebop and their recordings together are considered some of the most influential in jazz history.

This set contains the complete original LP 'Bird and Diz' (Verve MGV-8006), consisting of a quintet session which marked Parker and Gillespie's last studio date ever (although they would later be recorded together live on numerous occasions, including the celebrated 1953 Massey Hall concert). This session was also Parker's only studio encounter with the great Thelonious Monk. Side B features nine alternate takes from the session.

Overall, the partnership between Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie represents a
golden era in jazz history marked by innovation, collaboration and artistic excellence
and their music continues to inspire and captivate listeners, ensuring that Bird and Diz
will always be remembered as two of the greatest figures in the pantheon of jazz
legends.

aron! studierte Jazzgesang und Komposition für Film. Seinen „Vintage Pop“, wie er seine Musik nennt, veröffentlicht er jetzt bei Verve Records. „Es ist eine Art Singer-Songwriter-Jazz“, erklärt er. „Ich habe mich schon immer für die echten Romantiker interessiert. Die Leute machen heute dasselbe durch wie damals. Liebeskummer ist Liebeskummer, und Liebe ist Liebe. Wir sind alle Menschen, und darum geht es in den meisten meiner Songs“.

Sechs ins Ohr gehende Songs erscheinen jetzt beim berühmten Label von Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong und Blossom Dearie. Ein Kreis schließt sich und für den jungen aron! beginnt eine vielversprechende Musikkarriere.

"Irrepressible, off-the-wall and utterly unique - the late 70s/early 80s Latin jazz-funk and leftfield electronic boogie of Japanese composer and pianist Izumi ‘Mimi’ Kobayashi collected for the first time.

A star in Japan, she moved to Europe to record global hits with Depeche Mode and Swing Out Sister, toured the world with the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra and made beats with Attica Blues’ Tony Nwachukwu. Now based in London, Mimi currently fronts Tokyo Riddim Band - the intergenerational live Japanese Reggae outfit born from Time Capsule’s acclaimed 2023 compilation of the same name - playing live shows and releasing a trio of recordings.

Choice Cuts 1978-1983 collects eight recordings from four of Mimi’s first five albums – Sea Flight (1978) recorded with her group Flying Mimi Band, and Coconuts High (1981), Nuts Nuts Nuts (1982) and Tropicana (1983) under her own name.

The compilation opens with a syncopated electro-funk cover of Sergio Mendes’ ‘Mas Que Nada’ (Tropicana) and the crisp and stripped back techno-pop of ‘Coffee Rumba’ (Nuts Nuts Nuts) with a keyboard bass line that would have made Stevie Wonder weep.

Alongside the off-beat synth jam ‘Quiet Explosion’ (Nuts Nuts Nuts) and piano samba of ‘Espresso’ (Tropicana), there’s two low slung soul-jazz numbers, ‘Naze’ and ‘Angel Sky’, from Sea Flight (1978) that recall the collaborations between Herbie Hancock and Kimiko Kasai. But it is around the two tracks from Mimi’s 1981 album Coconuts High that this compilation revolves (and from whose cover shoot it borrows).

Released on legendary guitarist Takanaka’s Kitty Records label, Coconuts High was recorded in LA with a jazz fusion backing band, including Alex Acuña, Abraham Laborial, Harvey Mason and the Tower of Power horns. A riot of playful Latin-tinged jazz, funk and fusion with the off-beat spirit of Kid Creole & and the Coconuts, the album became a cult hit. Here it’s the sultry, Minnie Riperton-esque ‘Crazy Love’, with its addictive groove and bittersweet melodies that makes the cut, alongside the steel drum-infused carnivalesque bounce of ‘Palm St’.

Choice Cuts 1978-1983 will introduce the idiosyncratic energy and playful verve of this under-the-radar pioneer to a wider audience for the first time. Welcome to the world of Izumi ‘Mimi’ Kobayashi."

Davis conceived Bitches Brew by having the musicians stand in a semi-circle. There, he pointed at them with vague directions for tempo, solos, and cues. The collective improvisation and interplay spawned a galaxy of melodies and grooves that were later spliced together by producer Ted Macero. Benefitting from the ultra-low noise floor and superb groove definition of this pressing, these distinct creations take shape with utmost realism. Compositions stretch across jet-black backgrounds and paint canvases laden with millions of colors and shades. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab’s UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S) technique bypasses generational losses inherent to the traditional three-step plating process by removing two steps: the production of father and mother plates, which are created to yield numerous stampers from each lacquer that is cut. For UD1S plating, stampers (also called “converts”) are made directly from the lacquers. Since each lacquer yields only one stamper, multiple lacquers need to be cut. Mobile Fidelity's UD1S process produces a final LP with the lowest-possible noise floor. The removal of two steps of the plating process also reveals musical details and dynamics that would otherwise be lost due to the standard multi-step process. Jess Sah Bi is well-known as half of the legendary duo Jess Sah Bi & Peter One who brought homegrown Country-Americana to the West African masses with their smash debut Our Garden Needs Its Flowers in the mid-1980s. Touring stadiums and reaching listeners worldwide, their music has racked up millions of spins on YouTube and remains imprinted in the hearts of Ivorians of a certain age. ATFA reissued their album in 2018, garnering critical acclaim from publications including Pitchfork and Rolling Stone and reaching a new generation of listeners outside Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire). Sometime in the early 90s, Die Sahbi - or Jesse, as he known to friends-became gravely ill with an unknown ailment and almost died. He visited various doctors and all kinds of religious healers and nothing helped. One day he went down to an Evangelical Christian revival in his neighborhood. They prayed over him and he was delivered. He says, "Their prayers helped chase out whatever demons and unhealthy spirits were inside me. After that my illness went away. When I went to the United States a few months later on an exchange program I wanted to make music to thank God because I was saved." He recorded an album of music praising God in order to honor a promise he made to himself at the depths of his desperation in the hospital. The album Jesus-Christ Ne Deçoit Pas Jesus Christ Does Not Let Us Down came out in 1991 and sold around 3000 cassettes in Ivory Coast. The master tape was lost along the way so the recording has never been on digital platforms until now. Jesse didn't have much time to record while visiting South Carolina, hence the relatively short album, 6 songs including two reprises for filler. A local pastor connected him with a studio and some American musicians (Robert Fortner and Gary Davis) to help. They added acoustic guitar, percussion and keyboard accompaniment to Jesse's soaring French and Gouro vocals, harmonica and finger-picked acoustic. The resulting recording is deeply soothing and contemplative music that perfectly compliments the songs already embraced by millions. But he had to find the rest of the studio expenses-$600 total-which he secured drawing cartoons for UNICEF. Jesse is Ivory Coast's first political cartoonist, a vocation for which he was widely celebrated at the time. It also made him a few enemies which lead to him leaving the country permanently a few years later. Jesus-Christ Ne Deçoit Pas is Jess Sah Bi's first and only gospel album. Fortunately, fans responded with enthusiasm: widespread radio airplay and concerts followed, along with a growing solo profile in the country. The first big gospel artists in Ivory Coast were the duo Mathieu et Constance, who emerged in 1989. There was a bigger gospel music movement in English-speaking counties like Ghana and Nigeria (Christians make up roughly 40% of the population in Ivory Coast, slightly less than Muslims). Jesse didn't have any intention of working in Christian music but he realized, "You don't make music to make money-you want to send a message." In the years since Jesus-Christ's release, gospel music in Ivory Coast has grown to become a key part of music culture in the country. Spiritual music appears in community actives across the public and private spectrum from religious gatherings and parties to television broadcasts and music festivals. And, as it has evolved and indigenized locally, gospel music has picked up elements of traditional Ivorian music, reggae and soul. The album ultimately precipitated the demise of the duo, who were soon separated geographically as Peter One relocated to Nashville. He went on to become a nurse and release a successful solo album on Verve following the ATFA collaboration. Nowadays Jesse lives in the Bay Area and continues to record and perform music wherever and whenever he has the chance. He is publishing a new book of humorous cartoons in 2025 and his most recent album Never Give Up came out in 2020

Japanese bamboo flute maestro and goat (JP) cohort Rai Tateishi makes an impressive debut statement with his holistic attempts to transcend the limits of ancient instruments to reveal gently delirious insights.

‘Presence’ is a triumph of improvised, elemental musicality that distills aspects of myriad folk traditions in pursuit of the artist’s own truth. For 40 minutes of singularly weird, locked-in performance, Rai Tateishi diverges his formative training in the shinobue (a bamboo flute) to applications for its elder sibling, the shakuhachi, and its distant relatives in the khene mouth organ of Northeastern Thailand and Laos, and even the Irish flute, with remarkable results returned from each.

Piece to piece, Tateishi adapts a spectra of unusual and extended instrumental experiments to articulate uniquely animist sound arrangements, with judicious use of a ring modulator and delay effects only subtly altering his sound in real-time, gelling the harmonics and smoothing off its contours. Some 15 years of studies and accreted knowledge of histories, timelines, and spirits are deftly tattered in the air and rebound in precisely complex ribbons that become all the more impressive by virtue of its in-the-moment recording.

Presented with no overdubs, the six works were recorded by label head and KAKUHAN/goat lynchpin Koshiro Hino across three days of adventurous improvisation capturing the breadth of Tateishi’s vision in a mix of succinct flights of fancy and one durational wonder where he really cuts loose. An opening piece of rapid percussive fingering and rasping sets the tone for increasingly intricate explorations of the shinobue, and bluesy cadence of a reedy Thai khene - antecedent of the shō - whipped into headier harmonic overtones, whilst his 5th piece for Irish flute best recalls Ka Baird or Michael O’Shea’s lysergic impishness, and a 13 minute closing piece most boldly fucks with folk and jazz traditions, in-depth and with the genre short-circuiting audacity of Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

Released in 1967 with personnel including Lonnie Liston Smith (piano), Ronnie Boykins (bass), and Grady Tate (drums), Now Please Don’t You Cry… marked the beginning of Roland Kirk’s groovier explorations that would eventually lead him to record Blacknuss (1971). It’s vintage Kirk in a pared-down setting and is considered an essential Kirk album. Tenor saxophonist Ben Webster (1909 - 1973) had already enjoyed a long and fruitful
career by the time this 1957 session was recorded. However, as Bob Blumenthal
explains in the original liner notes, he still wasn't known for the sensual ballad feeling
that became his trademark during the last two decades of his life. At that time, he was
still recognized for the hard blowing fast tenor sax style he played with both the Duke
Ellington Orchestra and his own multiple small groups.
Even though his repertoire was generally linked to that of Duke Ellington, this classic
Norman Granz produced session presents Webster playing four popular ballads and
two of his own bluesy compositions, Soulville and Late Date. On hand in support are
the incredible Oscar Peterson Trio (Herb Ellis, Ray Brown), and drummer Stan Levey.
"The by turns grizzled and vaporous-toned Webster really hit his stride on the Verve
label. This 1957 date with the Oscar Peterson Trio is one of the highlights of that
golden '50s run. After starting off with two bluesy originals, Webster gets to the heart

The queen Ella Fitzgerald and the king Louis Armstrong first met in 1946 for the recording of "The Firm Fram Sauce", a song made famous the previous year by Nat "King" Cole. They had the opportunity to collaborate again in the studio for a few tracks in 1950 and 1952, but it was mainly between 1956 and 1958 that the duo was extremely active. Thanks to the impetus of producer Norman Granz, the star-studded partnership recorded at this period nearly fifty songs, considered masterpieces of jazz history. All these great standards were released on Norman Granz"s Verve label, with a dream cast: Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, Buddy Rich, and Louie Bellson. The grand finale took place in 1958 with their incomparable version of Gershwin"s "Porgy & Bess" conducted by Russell Garcia. For this Greatest Hits album showcasing the association of two geniuses, we have focused on the 1956-1958 period, choosing the most iconic standards and concluding this double vinyl on a high note with three excerpts from "Porgy & Bess".

Recorded in 1964 during two concerts in the venerable Greenwich Village venue, the Café Au Go Go, two months after Astrud Gilberto's "Girl From Ipanema" became a Top Five pop single. However, the focus of these sets moved away from the Brazilian flavoured fare, bringing Gilberto into the realm of a decidedly more North American style. The band features a young Gary Burton (vibraphone), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Gene Cherico (bass), and Joe Hunt (drums). There are a few personnel substitutions, with Helcio Milito (drums) and Chuck Israels (bass), respectively, filling in. Reaching yet another creative high watermark, piano virtuoso, multiplatinum songwriter, and social media sensation Tony Ann announces the pre-order of his anxiously awaited full-length sophomore album, 360°, on February 21, 2025.

Released in 1966 on Verve Folkways (a partnership between Verve Records and Moses Asch's Folkways Records), Mixed Bag was Richie Havens' official debut album and tackles a variety of song styles, hence its title. Among its highlights are Havens' readings of Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman" and The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby." The album received a ****½ AllMusic rating, with reviewer Jim Newsom stating that, "Richie Havens' finest recording, Mixed Bag captures the essence of his music and presents it in an attractive package that has held up well. It's the sound of Havens' distinctive voice coupled with his unusual open-E guitar tuning, rather than the specific lyrical content of the songs, that pulls the listener in. 'Handsome Johnny,' one of Havens' best known songs as a result of the Woodstock film, is a classic anti-war ballad, stoked by the singer's unmistakable thumb-chorded strumming.
