"Since 2012, New York City singer-songwriter Nate Amos (Water From Your Eyes, My Idea) has recorded and self-released hundreds of songs under the This Is Lorelei moniker, and perhaps surprisingly, after a decade plus, ""Box for Buddy, Box for Star"" marks the first attempt at a traditional, intentionally written full-length album. Amos describes the bulk of This Is Lorelei’s discography as “unedited diary entries,” written and recorded without much forethought, regard for genre or reverence for albums as thematic bodies of work, so oddly enough, ""Box for Buddy, Box for Star"" is both a fresh start and the culmination of years of diligent, interesting songwriting.

""Box for Buddy, Box for Star"" embraces traditional pop songcraft and a confessional, carefully written brand of lyricism, dabbling in the kind of classic singer-songwriter cliches he never imagined toying with—but not without the counterbalancing force of shitpost-y irony, which listeners have come to expect from Amos. Inspired by the gritty romanticism of Shane MacGowan and the Jim Croce mimicry of Tim Heidecker’s ""What the Brokenhearted Do…"", the LP exudes both a grizzled charm and youthful intensity. Sonically, Amos adorns the record with quaint country gestures—a full-circle artistic choice for Amos whose father is a veteran bluegrass musician.

And it wouldn’t be a Nate Amos release without a few curveballs, like “Dancing in the Club,” a bouncy auto-tuned pop song, which he likens to Bruce Hornsby-via-Blink-182, or “Perfect Hand,” an intimate piano-led track with vocal samples, alarm bell-like effects and skittering electronic beats. He also mischievously opens the album with a red herring of sorts, “Angel’s Eye,” a twangy sci-fi country duet about an angel who abducts a cowboy and unintentionally falls in love."

Barney, der inmitten der Schmelztiegel-Kultur von Huddersfield aufgewachsen ist, hat sich als einer der gefragtesten, eklektischsten jungen Produzenten Großbritanniens etabliert; von einem Ivor Novello Award für seine langjährige Zusammenarbeit mit Obongjayar bis zu Mercury-nominierten Künstlerinnen wie Joy Crookes und Olivia Dean. Der in Süd-London aufgewachsene Kojo verdiente sich seine Sporen in der Kirche und sang mit ebenso illustren einheimischen Künstlerinnen wie Cleo Sol und Little Simz. Nachdem sie sich während der Pandemie über Instagram kennengelernt hatten, trafen sich MRCY zwischen den Abriegelungen in Brixton, wodurch sich der Sound der Band - und ihre Verbundenheit - vertiefte. When Ella Fitzgerald began recording her series of albums devoted to the work of
America’s greatest song writers, she elevated the art of Jazz singing into a new
dimension while celebrating a unique musical heritage bequeathed to the world of
popular music. Norman Granz encouraged the bold decision to record five albums all
featuring the extraordinary output of songs composed by the brothers George and Ira
Gershwin during the Golden Age of popular song. Gershwin show tunes had long been
a staple diet for bandleaders, pop-vocalists and star-instrumentalists eager to perform
such exhilarating material as Strike Up The Band, Oh, Lady Be Good!, S’Wonderful and
I Got Rhythm. But there was also a gamut of ballads and romantic dance themes
needing to be interpreted with greater sensitivity. Ella was more than capable of
focusing on lyrics and caressing melodies of songs like Someone To Watch Over Me, A
Foggy Day and Embraceable You. They are among the 53 Gershwin classics she
recorded over an eight month period in 1959 and now featured in this superb collection.

Thanks For Coming bekannt sind, ist die Gruppe seit 2016 zusammen und hat einen klarsichtigen Ansatz für zukunftsweisende Tanzmusik entwickelt, die Strenge, Charme und Satire in einem Paket vereint, das durchweg innovativ und anders als alles ist, was ihre Zeitgenoss*innen in der Brooklyner DIY-Szene oder außerhalb davon machen. "Structure" ist ein Album, das sich an Widersprüchen erfreut und mit augenzwinkerndem Witz und unzweifelhaftem Know-How durch geradlinige Subgenres watet - ein Album, das das bisher erstaunlichste Projekt von Water From Your Eyes darstellt. Beeinflusst von Scott Walkers einziger Veröffentlichung aus den 80ern, "Climate Of Hunter", und den nachhallenden Werken des Farbfeldmalers Mark Rothko, ist "Structure" ein Konzeptalbum, das sich über die Idee von Konzeptalben lustig macht. Wie aus Höhlen zu kommende Tanzstücke dienen als hypnotisches Fundament zwischen Spoken-Word-Monologen, cineastischen Nummern und einem scheinbar fröhlichen Opener. Die siebenminütigen Epen "My Love's" und ""Quotations"" sind ausufernde, an Industrial gemahnende Stücke, wobei beide Tracks sägezahnartige Loops und Grooves einsetzen, die in der Lage sind, selbst die passivsten Zuhörer zu hypnotisieren. Wie Rothkos widersprüchliche Darstellung des Statischen und Kinetischen laden Water From Your Eyes dazu ein, an der stoischen Fassade von "Structure" zu kratzen, einen genaueren Blick auf die detaillierte Handarbeit zu werfen und die Risse im Spiegel zu verfolgen. Trotz der titelgebenden Implikationen und der kunstvollen konzeptionellen Ästhetik ist "Structure" eher unbeschwert als ernst. Sowohl Rachel Brown als auch Nate Amos, die in ihren jeweiligen Solo-Projekten bissig witzig sind, wenden ihren Humor natürlich auch auf "Structure" an, eine Platte, die den kreativen Prozess der Band widerspiegelt. Eifrige Hörer werden sich an wiederholten Durchläufen erfreuen, um die melodischen Feinheiten, die rhythmischen Kleinigkeiten und die lyrischen Wiederholungen der Platte zu entdecken. In his own words:
“Stylistically the tracks on this EP owe a lot to the great Black musicians from Chicago and Detroit, namely Herbie Hancock, Mr. De', DJ Rashad, Lil' Louis, Frankie Knuckles, James Stinson and Gerald Donald. I feel like the EP is kind of a love letter to the styles they pioneered, done in my own way, which in turn has been influenced by my background in classical music and improvised music but also so, so heavily by my friends and teachers: I've learned so much just from interacting, working and just plain witnessing eggglub, Lorelei, Maxi Cat, il sentimento, Hola Papá/Annunaki, Lavina Yelb, Jorge Pepi, and the whole music scene I belong to in Santiago.”

Fitzgerald’s concert and club dates, and wherever she goes, her
reception bears out an opinion that I have long held: People who
love good popular music are the same all over the world. Take, for
example, this record – “Mack The Knife”. It was recorded during a
concert at the Deutschlandhallen in Berlin which holds almost
12,000 people, and you can hear the same enthusiastic reaction,
the same eager applause, that mark similar recordings Ella has
made before live audiences in America. That concert – and this
album – have come to be regarded as something special because
of Ella’s version of Mack The Knife. It was the first time she’d sung
the song, and not knowing the lyric too well, she substituted her
own – for what may well have been an improvement on the

The return of A Turntable Friend Records starts with an opulent 40 track retrospective compilation of their heydays in the 1909s. Peers of Sarah Records and Slumberland Records but far from copying their style, ATF Records always had their own musical identity allowing for a roster as diverse as Boyracer (with Even As We Speak), Secret Shine, The Claim, The Ropers, the Hellfire Sermons + Lorelei.

This compilation is a feast of highlights from the long-deleted back catalogue plus 8 unreleased tracks from the period. Many of the original 7s & 12s are much sought after collector items and several tracks appear on cd for the first time.
