Der postklassische Komponist, Klangkünstler und Kurator Matthew Patton ist mit seinem zweiten Album als Those Who Walk Away zurück. "Afterlife Requiem" ist eine Elegie für seinen Freund und Kollegen Jóhann Jóhannsson. Drones, Elektroakustik und fast vollständige Stille, extrahiert aus unvollendeten Aufnahmen auf Jóhannssons Festplatten, bilden die Grundlage für zwei Streichquintette - Ghost Orchestra (Reykjavík) und Possible Orchestra (Winnipeg) -, die in einem traurigen, langatmigen Werk verarbeitet und ausgelöscht werden. Patton hat auch wieder mit Andy Rudolph (Guy Maddin) und Paul Corley (Sigur Rós, Ben Frost) an der Koproduktion und dem Sounddesign gearbeitet, um eine brodelnde Körperlichkeit zu schaffen, die brodelnde Tiefen mit eindringlichen Bewegungen gespenstischer Streicher kontrastiert. ,Alles, was ich je geschrieben habe, ist ein Requiem. Alles ist ein Ende. Der Tod ist überall in dieser Musik präsent. In meinen Werken geht es um das Verschwinden - der Gegenwart, der Vergangenheit, von allem. Afterlife Requiem wird im Laufe seiner Dauer immer langsamer, es ist ein einziges großes Ritardando, die Zeit verlangsamt sich nicht nur, sie verschwindet. Ohne dass ich darüber nachgedacht hätte, ereigneten sich zwei miteinander verbundene Tragödien, die während des Schreibens, Aufnehmens und Arbeitens organisch an die Oberfläche kamen: der Tod meiner Mutter und der Tod des Komponisten und Freundes Jóhann Jóhannsson. Wenn ich mit dem Schreiben anfange, denke ich an nichts Bestimmtes, ich schreibe einfach, komponiere, nehme auf und höre zu ... aber irgendwas macht sich immer auf unvorhergesehene Weise bemerkbar oder drängt sich in den Vordergrund. Nach dem medizinisch assistierten Tod meiner Mutter wurde mir beim Ausräumen ihrer Wohnung klar, dass ich auch die physische Manifestation ihrer Welt auslöschte - und dass ich genau dasselbe mit der Musik tat, die ich schrieb und aufnahm. Während dieser Zeit wurde mir auch Jóhanns Tod immer wieder bewusst. Für Afterlife Requiem habe ich kurze, verlassene Fragmente aus Jóhann Jóhannssons Festplatten genommen und diese körperlosen Audio-Geister abwechselnd in meine eigene Musik eingebaut, wobei ich sie unrein gelassen habe - und dabei die Grenze zwischen Schaffen und Zerstören verwischt habe. Nach seinem Tod hatte ich diese Festplatten aus Jóhannssons Berliner Studio zum Anhören bekommen. Diese Musik war aufgegeben worden, in verschiedenen Stadien der Entstehung und Auflösung: ein Verzeichnis zerfallener und toter Erinnerungen, vergessen und jetzt nur noch in einer Reihe ineinandergreifender mechanischer Teile vorhanden, die mit der Zeit selbst versagen und verschwinden werden, wie alles andere auch. Monatelang hörte ich mir diese Überreste von Jóhanns Musik obsessiv an und versuchte, Hinweise auf Jóhann vor seinem Tod zu finden. Oft stellte ich fest, dass er das Aufnahmegerät noch lange nach Ende der aufgenommenen Musik laufen gelassen hatte. Er schien nicht zu bemerken, dass die Musik aufgehört hatte, oder registrierte nicht, dass dies das Ende der Musik war, oder vielleicht war er durch etwas anderes abgelenkt. Aber ich fand diese langen Stillephasen zutiefst emotional und berührend. Die verschwindenden Elegien von Afterlife Requiem sind weniger Musik als vielmehr Überreste von Musik. Auf diese Weise arbeite ich immer auf die Subtraktion von Bedeutung hin. Die Musik ist fern und verschwommen, beschädigt, geisterhaft und gespenstisch und deutet nur wie eine halb vergessene Erinnerung an das, was einmal existierte, eine verdichtete Darstellung von Verfall und Auslöschung. Ich habe dieses neue Stück von Anfang bis Ende mit diesen körperlosen Stillephasen aus Jóhanns eigenem Werk, Raum und Zeit unterlegt. Jetzt für immer verschwunden, bleibt seine aufgezeichnete Stille zurück; eine monumentale Leere, die der Welt verloren gegangen ist. Im gesamten Stück, insbesondere in den Abschnitten ,Memorial Environment", habe ich auch unzählige Geräusche aus der Natur integriert, von vulkanischer Lava über Lastenaufzüge bis hin zum menschlichen Blutfluss, dem Zischen von Turbinen und Selbstmordinjektionen. Der Künstler Robert Smithson sagte vor Jahrzehnten: ,Es ist die Dimension der Abwesenheit, die es noch zu finden gilt." Für mich misst diese Musik auch, wie die Zeit abläuft. Julius Hemphill's debut record, 1972's Dogon A.D., was self-produced for his Mbari imprint, and it was issued with a beautiful black-and-white cover. Very DIY. The label's name writ large along the bottom edge, like it was the band's name. It's a quartet record featuring Hemphill on alto and flute, with Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Abdul Wadud on cello, and Phillip Wilson on drums – a classic jazz front line/rhythm section format, but nothing conventional about the way the music sounds.

The long track – from where the LP takes its title – is one of the key epic statements of new jazz in the era. Among its remarkable distinctions, it manages to draw on Wilson's schizoid experience having been a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and the first drummer for the Art Ensemble of Chicago, in making an 11/8 rhythm into a staggeringly funky thing of joy. Over the course of fourteen and a half minutes, Hemphill builds a nearly continuous solo, his spiritual blood brother Wadud sawing the cello with a deep blues soulfulness that is raw and mantra-like in its repetitive incantation. It feels right and wrong in equal measure, the theme carrying its own piquancy with honked barnyard dissonances and some contrary motion between the horns and string. Most of all, it takes its own sweet time, in no hurry to get anywhere in particular, but out for a righteous stroll. – John Corbett (excerpt from the liner notes)

Davidsen hat eine enge Beziehung zur Met, wo sie seit ihrem Debüt 2019 regelmäßig in Hauptrollen von
Tschaikowski, Wagner, Strauss, Verdi, Puccini und Beethoven auftritt. „Ich betrachte die Met als mein
zweites Zuhause“, sagt Davidsen. „Aber um so etwas gebeten zu werden, war etwas ganz Besonderes.“
Zu den Höhepunkten zählen Wagners „Dich, teure Halle“ aus Tannhäuser, Amelias Arie aus dem dritten Akt von Verdis ”Un ballo in maschera” und Puccinis „Vissi d’arte“. Dazu kommen Lieder von Schubert
sowie Musik von Grieg und Sibelius als Hommage an Davidsens skandinavische Herkunft.
Die Veröffentlichung folgt auf Davidsens gefeiertes Wagner-Album ”Der fliegende Holländer”, welches den
Gramophone Award 2025 für die beste Opernaufnahme gewann und von Kritikern weltweit hoch gelobt
wurde.

„Twio“ hieß das fünfte Studioalbum des US-amerikanischen Tenorsaxofonisten Walter Smith III, das im
Februar 2018 bei Whirlwind Recordings veröffentlicht wurde. Der Titel war eine spielerische Wortschöpfung
aus „Trio“ und „Two“. Downbeat schrieb damals: „‘Twio‘ präsentiert den großartigen Tenorsaxophonisten in einem kompakten Trio-Setting. Sein Ton und seine Melodik sind umwerfend, gepaart mit reichem,
packendem Ideenreichtum“.
Für sein drittes Blue-Note-Album greift der Musiker jetzt das Konzept wieder auf und präsentiert mit
„Twio Vol. 2“ ein äußerst gelungenes Album mit klassischen Jazzstücken voll swingender Spielfreude. Das
Album besticht durch eine neue, wechselnde Besetzung mit Bassist Joe Sanders und Schlagzeuger Kendrick
Scott sowie Gastauftritten der Jazzlegenden Ron Carter am Bass und Branford Marsalis am Tenorsaxofon.

Nach einer fünfjährigen Schaffenspause veröffentlichte eine der dienstältesten Punkbands Deutschlands 2010 ihr achtes Album. Der passende Titel: "Gib acht!". Es entstand mit Gastmusikern von den Skatoons, Cultus Ferrox, Directors Cut und dem Pianisten Peter Stoppok. Das Repertoire reicht von dynamischen, treibenden Punkrock-Songs über Ska- und Folkanleihen bis hin zur Ballade "Ich bin"s", die an frühe Lindenberg-Lieder erinnert. Mit "Danke" hat man sogar einen echten Popsong, und für "Mama, hol den Hammer" wurde ein kultiger Uraltschlager entstaubt. Textlich geht es wieder quer durch sämtliche Lebensbereiche: mal kritisch, mal nachdenklich, dann wieder kämpferisch oder einfach nur am alltäglichen Wahnsinn orientiert. Zehn Jahr nach der Erstveröffentlichung kommt nun das Jubiläums-Tape für alle Sammler und Kassettenliebhaber.

Mit Queen of Cuba präsentiert Wagram eine sorgfältig kuratierte Vinyl-Ausgabe, die dem unvergleichlichen Werk von Celia Cruz gewidmet ist. Die "Königin des Salsa" prägte über Jahrzehnte die kubanische Musik und machte sie weltweit bekannt. Dieses Album vereint einige ihrer bedeutendsten Aufnahmen, die den unverwechselbaren Klang und die Energie des Son, Rumba und Salsa widerspiegeln. Titel wie Burundanga, Yerbero Moderno, Cao Cao Maní Picao und Mata Siguaraya zeigen die Vielfalt ihres Repertoires und ihre charismatische Stimme, die Generationen begeistert hat.

Michel Houellebecq is, of course, well-known for his novels, translated into more than 40 languages, and his Goncourt Prize (The Map and the Territory, 2010), but perhaps less so for his debut album, released exactly a quarter of a century ago on Tricatel label. One can sense the influence of Serge Gainsbourg's L'Homme à la Tête de Chou, a disillusioned Procol Harum and a world-weary Burt Bacharach hovering over Houellebecq's poems in Présence Humaine, a now cult classic album orchestrated by Bertrand Burgalat and the musicians of Eiffel. Twelve thousand copies sold and a few concerts later, the writer decided (or so we thought) to bid farewell to the stage, only to generate more media attention though his literary success. Frédéric Lo is, of course, known as an exceptional lyricist, composer, arranger, and producer, author of a sublime fourth solo album (L'Outrebleu, released last March) and a master of collaborative work, notably with Bill Pritchard, Peter Doherty and Daniel Darc. Initially, Michel Houellebecq and Frédéric Lo met for the tribute album that the latter was planning for the tenth anniversary of Daniel Darc's death, but their recording of "Psalm XXIII" was, to their great disappointment, rejected by the label and therefore did not appear on the final version of Cœur Sacré (2023). Fortunately, every cloud has a silver lining, and the two men decided to take their collaboration a step further. Lo decided to set the writer's words to music, in his studio in Pantin. Raw, stripped-down music draped in electronica, adorned with piano and antediluvian drum machines, often minimalist, sometimes repetitive, provides the perfect backdrop for twelve tracks that question and reflect on humanity's past and future (if indeed there is one). Reflections on the human condition, 21st-century style, a work of speculative fiction conceived by two eternally modern "young lads," Souvenez-Vous de l'Homme (Remember Man) is an album that might occasionally evoke The Stranglers' La Folie, and, given the title, that's probably no coincidence. But above all, it's a hypnotic and melancholic album, uncompromising and captivating. Most importantly, it's an album like no other.

I don't wanna die (Pt. 1 & 2) is John Wells raw portrait of two years caught between a stalled music deal, broken trust, and the fight to stay alive. Set against fog and grit in Baltimore, the EP blends soul-baring lyricism with shifting, dreamlike production — confronting self-doubt, past mistakes, and the stubborn will to survive.

Elvis Now was, despite the title, recorded between early 1969 and the summer of 1971 and encompasses different genres including country, gospel, soul and pop. We see for example Kris Kristofferson-penned "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and The Beatles' "Hey Jude", all lavishly arranged keeping in mind the Las Vegas aesthetic of 70s Elvis. The album furthermore only had one single, "Until It's Time for You to Go / We Can Make the Morning", which reached number 9 on the Easy Listening chart in the US in March 1972 and number 5 on the UK Singles Chart in April 1972.

Elvis 56 is a compilation originally released in 1996 containing 22 of Elvis' best tracks from his first year at RCA: five singles with five B-sides, five songs from his debut and six from his second LP plus a previously unreleased alternate take of "Heartbreak Hotel". That means we see "Hound Dog", "Don't Be Cruel", "Blue Suede Shoes"; quintessential tunes that cemented Presley's status as a true rock and roll icon.

The album opens with a swinging version of "I'll Be There." The groove is up-tempo, slippery and almost gospel in intent, it's simply breathtaking.

Soul Quest present the second edition of their Quest Series, a vinyl compilation featuring tracks that have previously only had digital releases. First up, label co-founder Max Sinàl once again teams up with label mainstay KingCrowney with ‘All Night’, a bumpy dance floor friendly groover featuring Yasmin on vocals. The track also samples an extract from Moodymann’s famous Red Bull interview, with clearance and blessings from the main man himself. Next up we have a track taken from Colm K’s ep released in the summer, ‘A Red Line In A Blue Sky’ remixed by another of the labels co-founders, Slxm Sol.

Deep, sexy grooving house with well placed vocal samples that keeps you zoned in from beginning to end. Flipping over to the b-side, we start off with Real Love Seeker x BB James with ‘I Want You’. Distinctive London flavours spoken through broken beat grooves and BB James’ captivating lyrics, ending with a gorgeous synth solo. Finally Stefan Ringer brings some ATL flavours to Berkeley Hunt’s ‘Wicked Sins’. Stefan twists the original in to a dark, enchanting roller, using the haunting vocals over a percussive groove with perfectly placed synths weaving themselves in and out.

Set for release on 27th February 2026, the single offers an early glimpse into Kaden’s forthcoming album on Radio Slave’s flagship imprint, and comes with a remix from New York House legend, Dennis Ferrer.

A slow-burner with real progression, Mathias Kaden’s ‘Fyutr’ unfolds as a mind-melting journey. Dub chords creep in gently before stretching and mutating, while Zoë Xenia’s spoken-word vocal drifts through the mix, and sweeping strings give it a deep, timeless feel. The single is complemented by a remix from Dennis Ferrer, who flips the original into a beefy, pared-back House cut, warping Xenia’s vocals and locking into a rolling groove before resolving in lush chord work.

Active since the mid-90s, Kaden first appeared on Rekids in 2019 and has since built a wide-ranging catalogue across labels such as Cocoon and Vakant, alongside remix work for DJ Koze, KiNK, Monika Kruse, and Trentemøller. ‘Fyutr’ marks his fifth release on the label, following last year’s ‘Freedom’ remix EP, which received support from Ben Sims, Anja Schneider, Kölsch, Honey Dijon, and more.
