Doris Duke's version of Marlena Shaw's seminal, powerful “Woman Of The Ghetto” originally appeared on her third album 'Woman' in 1975. It's a searing version, Duke's full-bodied and fierce voice adding even more urgency to the searing social commentary embedded in the lyrics.

On the flip is another SAM Records classic. “Free” by Rhyze is a disco-monster. A sure-fire staple for some of the biggest DJs and diggers out there.

Kaidi Tatham is a legendary multi-instrumentalist born in the Midlands and based in Belfast. Established as one of the original creators of the Broken Beat sound, he is a virtuoso on the keys and a true innovator in sound production. A deeply prolific artist, this is Kaidi's 5th solo album under his own name, following on from 'Don't Rush The Process' (2022), 'An Insight To All Minds' (2021), 'It's A World Before You' (2018), and 'In Search Of Hope' (re-pressed in 2020), all released on First Word, along with several EPs from 2017 onwards. Oliver Dollar’s Industry Standard welcome Detroit’s Outr Drive featuring vocalist Steffanie Christi’an for a vinyl release on the label. This package presses up the original ‘You Don’t Know’, first released on the label in 2021, with remixes from John Arnold & KON.

The original sees Outr Drive deliver a low slung, soul drenched, deep house track with a live bass line and lush keys that set the tone of a track for a wonderful vocal from Steffanie. The song is both emotive and seductive and shows off her amazing vocal range.

Detroit’s John Arnold steps up for the first remix taking his version into a deep electronic, synth driven work out, using the vocals to blistering effect over his swirling Detroit styled synth chords.

Over on the B-side we have some disco gold from Boston’s KON. He’s crafted a vintage styled disco record around the vocal that sounds truly authentic, almost feeling like it was recorded in a live session. This mix oozes quality and will be a timeless floor pleaser for the cooler floors.

The Congos were formed by Cedric Myton (b. 1947, St Catherine, Jamaica) around the mid-Seventies when the
Rasta message was central to the reggae sound coming out of Kingston, Jamaica. But he had started out in the
Rocksteady era, when he formed the vocal group 'Tartans', taking lead vocal duties alongside Devon Russell, Prince Lincoln Thompson and Lindbergh Lewis.They cut 'Dance All Night' (1967) and 'Coming On Strong' (1968). The line-Up became The Royal Rasses and from this Cedric moved on to form the Congos on meeting Roydel Johnson, who had previously sang with Ras Michael and the Sons of Negas. Cedric's Rasta roots were firmly in place when he went to work with producer Lee Perry to cut the seminal album 'Heart Of The Congos' at Perry's just built, Black Ark Studios in 1977. Cedric Myton has carried on the mantle, cutting a set of tunes with the help of his good friend Mr Brent Dowe, who had previously sang lead vocals with the Melodians.This is the Dub set to the vocal album released on the Kingston

Conceived as a means to get out of a songwriting rut, When We Were Younger, is an EP centered around the concept of nostalgia. This was partly motivated by grentperez’s desire to stave off cynicism and embrace the carefree creativity of childhood. When We Were Younger fuses the signifiers of a wide variety of nostalgic sounds: his beloved bossa nova, yes, but also sprightly Philadelphia soul, the swelling strings of golden-era Hollywood, even the soundtracks and general vibe of 90s romcoms. Different musical gestures and lyrics stimulating long-dormant memories while simultaneously providing a soundtrack for new ones.
