In future times, culture historians will refer to Gabor Schablitzki aka Robag Wruhme as a creator of a singular techno sound, a rock in the murky sea of arbitrary musical dullness that befell mankind in the early 21st century.

Furthermore, a lesser known quality of Schablitzki will be praised and explored: He was a relentless wordsmith, a deeply passionate inventor of elegant idioms that enriched German language. Take ‘Freggelswuff’ or ‘Wemmel’ as shining examples.

It’s within this context that a certain cultural artefact released on a Cologne based record label called KOMPAKT (which towards the end of the 21st century made a hardly publicised turn to manufacturing CO2-neutral wall plug systems) that went by the sonorous title ‘Topinambur’ has to be mentioned. Legend has it that Schablitzki claimed to have created the word ‘Topinambur’, unknowingly that local farmers have been marketing a root tuber under the same name since it got imported from America in 1610 AD. The following tenacious copyright lawsuit between Schablitzki and a large agricultural consortium lasted for many years. It isn’t considered as a highpoint in Schablitzki’s turbulent life but it still serves a staircase wit that is passed on from generation to generation amongst Black Forest moonshiners.

Jahrhundert vorherrschenden Beliebigkeit. Als DJ und Produzent war ein Meister des deepen Abrisses, werden sie weiterhin formulieren, obschon es weitere 136 Jahre dauern wird, bis die subkulturelle Bedeutung des Wortes 'Abriss' zweifelsfrei geklärt werden konnte.

Es wird aber auch eine weitere einzigartige Qualität Gabor Schablitzkis hervorgehoben werden: Er war ein unermüdlicher Wortschöpfer, der die deutsche Sprache um elegante Idiome wie Freggelswuff oder Wemmel bereicherte. In diesem Zusammenhang findet meist eine Veröffentlichung des Kölner Labels KOMPAKT (welches im ausklingenden 21. Jahrhundert einen wenig bemerkenswerten Wandel zum Hersteller von CO2-neutralen Dämmstoffdübeln vollzog) Erwähnung. Diese Veröffentlichung erschien unter dem klangvollen Namen "Topinambur" und die Legende besagt, dass Schablitzki behauptete auch hier der Nachwelt eine neue Wortschöpfung hinterlassen zu haben, nicht wissend, dass europäische Landwirte bereits seit 1610 A.D. unter diesem Namen ein aus Amerika importiertes Knollengewächs vermarkteten. Der sich daran anschliessende Copyright-Streit zwischen Schablitzki und einem mächtigen Agrarkonzern, zählte nicht zu den rühmlichen Episoden seines bewegten Lebens, sorgt aber seit Generationen als Treppenwitz unter Schwarzwälder Schnapsbrennern für viel Geschmunzel.

Robag Wruhme isn’t just a producer; he’s a sonic storyteller. His tracks are known for their emotional depth and technical brilliance – the perfect blend of minimal techno, deep house, and ambient music—each track a meticulously crafted journey through sound. With influences ranging from classical to jazz to world music, Robag’s music is as diverse as it is enchanting.
His latest offering on the trailblazing Speicher series is no exception. True to his unmistakable style, “Naila” meanders between heartwarming positivity and menacing darkness induced by one of those bass lines only Robag can deliver. In short: He nail(a)ed it!
On the flip side, he joins forces with the ominous Bruno Pronsato – an elusive character that has a string of cult releases on Perlon, Musique Risquée and Foom under his belt. “CDV” was initially released on his album “Live At Club Der Visionäre” on Logistic Records. Robag’s slick re-rub is pushing things decisively in an afterhour-ish direction. Mental music for mental times!

Bronky Frumu Rehand Despite all the collaborations on last year's Amygdala by Pampa cult leader DJ Koze, there was still one recurring comment from the public: The album still had DJ Koze's trademark stamp all over it. That is why have been taking the proper steps to rectify this problem, offering a remix series, to further disassociate DJ Koze from this otherwise respectable assortment of songs. Here is the second installment. First up is Roman Flügel, co-founder of the legendary label powerhouse Ongaku/Klang/Playhouse, not to mention his more recent releases on Clone and Live At Robert Johnson. We have no idea what kind of app he used, but somehow he transformed the title track 'Amygdala' from a laid-back, wind-chiming electro-pop number into a clock-working tech-house fairy tale. Roman wisely and tastefully retains the original guest spot from Milosh (of the duo Rhye), offering a grittier backdrop for his lulling vocal delivery. Next comes Robag Whrume, who is no stranger to any Pampa fan, having released an album and a mix CD with us, aside from his countless other works. Here he has taken the pleasant puffiness of DJ Koze's 'Nices Wölkchen' and incubated it in a deep house cocoon. The witch-shifted voice of guest singer Apparat is given a new life, hovering amidst a mesmerizing mechanical groove. As always, there's nothing formulaic about Robag's formula as he serves up little moments of magic.

Pampa Records is back with its sixth release. This one will be a split 12~ of Isolée and Robag Wruhme who each drop tracks of their upcoming artist albums to be released on Pampa in 2011.

There's no 123 without 4 in our beloved Speicher series. Robag Wruhme is back with two intense, low-slung monster tunes in his unique masterful fashion. "Fire" is destined to set your peak time dancefloor on fire with its killer bassline and trippy sequences. "Un-spok-en" is equally relentless and unfathomable, garnished with a haunting vocal snippet.

Es gibt kein 123 ohne 4 in unserer geliebten Speicher-Serie. Robag Wruhme kehrt mit zwei unglaublich intensiven, tiefergelegten Monstern zurück und schon ab dem ersten Beat ist klar, dass hier der Meister aus Weimar wieder mal in Hochform ist. "Fire" ist pure Primetime-Beglückung mit einer der fiesesten Basslines ever und schön trippigen Sequenzen on top. "Un-spo-ken" ist ähnlich unerbittlich und unberechenbar. Daran kann auch das zart dahin gehauchte Vocalschnipsel nichts ändern.

After last year's lauded 3-track EP "TOPINAMBUR" we're more than happy to announce ROBAG WRUHME's return to SPEICHER. On the A-side, Robag delivers a deep hypnotic chugger that goes by the simple but ultimately affirmative name "YES". In all its simplicity, it's one of those tracks that gently tosses you down the famous rabbit hole. The flip side "CALMA CALMA" is pure summer festival bliss, resurrecting the spine-tingling a cappella from C'Hantal's proto techno classic "The Realm" for the 2020's. Both tracks are 100% Robag... highly emotive, über sexy and yet somehow hazardous.

Nach der hochgelobten 3-Track EP “Topinambur” freuen wir uns sehr, ROBAG WRUHME’s Rückkehr auf SPEICHER anzukündigen. Auf der A-Seite liefert Robag einen tiefgehenden, fast hypnotischen Track, der den simplen und durchweg bejahenden Titel “YES” trägt. In all seiner Einfachheit ist das ein Stück, das dich behutsam das berühmt-berüchtigte Rabbit Hole hinunter bugsiert. Acht Jahre nach dem Klassiker „Thora Vukk“ veröffentlicht Robag Wruhme ein weiteres Meisterwerk – Venq Tolep!

Mit spielerische Leichtigkeit nimmt Wruhme synthetische Klänge und gesampelte Geräusche, schneidet sie zurecht und baut daraus Beats, ohne dass seine Musik je gebastelt klingt: jeder einzelne perkussive Sound eine kleine Einheit, die vor Melodiösität berstet. Oder diese zumindest andeutet. Für "Venq Tolep" seine erste Pampa Albumveröffentlichung seit 8 Jahren, hat Robag Wruhme sich genau da hinein vertieft und den Raum dieser Teile weit aufgezogen. Er findet Beats in den Beats, öffnet diese weiter, entdeckt Hooklines und Harmonien, und spürt, wo er schliesslich gänzlich auf Rhythmen verzichten kann. "Venq Tolep" klingt rund. Ein Bogen spannt sich. Und natürlich ist es das Robag Wruhme Universum. Wärme statt Coolness und Freundlichkeit statt Härte. Aber mit "Venq Tolep" formuliert Robag Wruhme noch etwas anderes: Das Album spricht die Sprache von Clubmusik – Klanggestaltung, Layering, Arrangement sind vertraut. aber "Venq Tolep" wagt auch die größtmögliche Annäherung von Track an Song: Techno Pop? Pop Techno? Pop Ambient? Ambient Pop? – Ach was, ganz einfach: »"Venq Tolep" ist Robag Wruhmes Einschreibung in die Pop Musik.

The latest boy band in town, POP VAMPIRES COLOGNE, opens the party with the enigmatic ‘Karianne’. SUPERPITCHER knows how to make a grand appearance, accompanied by high-calibre guests. His electro-pop treat ‘Pandora’s Box’ features Hot Chip’s ALEXIS TAYLOR​ on vocals.​ JÜRGEN PAAPE isn’t coming alone either, but with newcomer HELLA in tow. ‘Grace (A Tale)‘ once again shows our resident hit maker at his best. JÖRG BURGER also has a table companion, the extremely talented Irene Kalisvaart, and remixes himself on top of that. REINHARD VOIGT points out that money never sleeps and proceeds according to the motto: ’​Zahl an einem anderen Tag (Pay another day​)’. Our Brazilian whirlwind GUI BORATTO returns after a long absence with the banger ‘Panorama X-Press’. After careful consideration, ROBAG WRUHME has named his new track ‘Total’ and sings in the chorus with his family for the first time. WASSERMANN contributes an ultra-fat remix of Mayer’s ‘Brainwave Technology’, while MICHAEL MAYER himself marvels at the rare ‘Erdbeermond’. Die neueste Boygroup in town, POP VAMPIRES COLOGNE eröffnet die Party mit dem enigmatischen ‘Karianne’. SUPERPITCHER weiss, wie man einen großen Auftritt hinlegt, und zwar in hochkarätiger Begleitung. Sein Elektropop-Leckerbissen ’Pandora’s Box’ featured Hot Chip’s ALEXIS TAYLOR an den Vocals. Fresh from the release of André Hommen’s More Than This album earlier this year, October will see the German talent follow up with the first of two special remix packages. Set for release on his own imprint, These Eyes, More Than This Remixes Pt. 1 includes stellar offerings from two Kompakt regulars: Robag Wruhme and Jonathan Kaspar.

Beginning with the punchy sounds of Robag Wruhme ’s remix, hard-hitting drum combos are swiftly complemented by reverberating vocals, as up-tempo hats create rhythm to forge a no-nonsense dancefloor cut. Jonathan Kaspar ’s remix rounds things off gently, with a softly-building bassline that ebbs and flows alongside whispering hats and warm, soothing pads.

André Hommen ’s international following should come as no surprise given his already storied career. As label head of These Eyes, the imprint has welcomed standout releases from the likes of Ane Brun and Marc Romboy previously. Another staple of Germany's ever-flourishing music scene, Robag Wruhme ’s productions have found a welcome home on labels as acclaimed as Koze’s Pampa Records, Kompakt and Mute to name a few, whilst fellow prolific-producer Jonathan Kaspar has released two EP’s on These Eyes, then also Objektivity and Acid Pauli’s Ouië in an already-storied career.

Over the decades, the image of Kompakt as a pirate ship has taken root in our minds, braving the dangers of the seven seas of the music market. Sometimes it glides with a tailwind through calm waters, sometimes it has to survive violent storms. When we set sail in 1993, we never would have dreamt that our journey would still be going on after more than three decades and with 500 releases to date.

In our fast-paced business, the 500 mark is rarely reached, so we want to celebrate it with a lavish 5LP box set. In a democratic process, we have selected 50 pearls from the thousands of tracks released over the last 33 1/3 years and pressed them onto 5 brightly coloured vinyls. Alongside many Kompakt evergreens, there are also some real rarities from the early ‘Kompakt Sound of Cologne’, which have been lovingly remastered here to shine in new splendour.

The box also contains a 144-page book that tells the story of Kompakt from 1993 to today with detailed texts and images. In addition to the manifold musical and graphic achievements of Kompakt, the multidisciplinary links to the visual arts are also highlighted here.

The Bonus Picture Disc opens with the symbolic tolling of 500 bass drums, followed by 50 locked grooves from the 5 Kompakt founders, looping into infinity at 133 1/3 BPM, and the ‘33 1/3 Years Loop Opera’ – in which the loops are combined into one track that, in its reduced essence, is more than the sum of its individual parts. The magic of groovy loop minimalism and the ‘art of omission’ are once again brought to the proverbial point.

On 23 May 2025, the big KOMPAKT 500 art exhibition will open at the venerable Kölnischer Kunstverein to coincide with the release. The entire visual cosmos of Kompakt will be shown here in an unprecedented way on three floors, with the participation of many renowned artists. Of course, there will also be dancing and partying at the vernissage party, with DJ sets and live shows by the Kompakt Allstars.

The last one turns off the bass drum.


Im Laufe der Jahrzehnte hat sich in unseren Köpfen das Bild von Kompakt als Piratenschiff festgesetzt, das den Gefahren der sieben Weltmeere des Musikmarktes trotzt. Mal gleitet es mit Rückenwind durch ruhige Gewässer, mal muss es heftige Stürme überstehen. Als wir 1993 die Segel setzten, hätten wir uns nicht träumen lassen, dass unsere Reise nach über drei Jahrzehnten und mittlerweile 500 Veröffentlichungen immer noch andauert.

Die 500 ist in unserem schnelllebigen Geschäft eine selten erreichte Katalognummer und soll daher mit einer üppigen 5LP-Box gebührend gefeiert werden. In einem demokratischen Prozess haben wir aus den tausenden Tracks der letzten 33 1/3 Jahre 50 Perlen ausgewählt und auf 5 knallbunte Vinyls gepresst. Neben vielen Kompakt-Evergreens finden sich auch einige echte Raritäten des frühen “Kompakt Sound of Cologne”, die hier liebevoll remastered in neuem Glanz erstrahlen.

Die Box enthält außerdem ein 144-seitiges Buch, das mit ausführlichen Texten und Bildern die Kompakt-Geschichte von 1993 bis heute erzählt. Neben den mannigfaltigen musikalischen und grafischen Errungenschaften von Kompakt werden hier auch die multidisziplinären Vernetzungen zur bildenden Kunst beleuchtet.

Die Bonus Picture Disc wird mit einem symbolischen Glockenschlag von 500 Bassdrums eröffnet, gefolgt von 50 Endlosrillen der 5 Kompakt-Gründer, die sich bei 133 1/3 BPM in die Unendlichkeit schleifen sowie der “33 1/3 Years Loop Opera”, in der die Loops zu einem Track zusammengefügt werden, der in seiner reduzierten Essenz mehr ist als die Summe seiner Einzelteile. Die Magie des groovenden Loop-Minimalismus und die “Kunst des Weglassens” werden einmal mehr auf den sprichwörtlichen Punkt gebracht.

Am 23. Mai 2025 eröffnet parallel zum Release die große KOMPAKT 500 Kunstausstellung im ehrwürdigen Kölnischen Kunstverein. Der gesamte visuelle Kosmos von Kompakt wird hier unter Beteiligung vieler namhafter Künstler*Innen in nie gesehener Form auf drei Etagen gezeigt. Selbstverständlich darf zur Vernissagenparty auch getanzt und gefeiert werden zu DJ Sets und Liveshows der Kompakt Allstars.
