Anlässlich des 50-jährigen Jubiläums freut sich Ace Records, eine limitierte 3-LP-Compilation anzubieten, die dort beginnt, wo alles begann – bei Chiswick Records. Im November 1975 verwirklichte Ted Carroll endlich seinen Traum von einem eigenen Independent-Label, als Chiswick seine erste Single veröffentlichte – die EP 'Speedball' von The Count Bishops. Mit Roger Armstrong und Trevor Churchill an seiner Seite war Chiswick zur richtigen Zeit am richtigen Ort. Bald darauf veröffentlichten sie Singles, die sich in den Bereichen Pub Rock, Punk, Metal, Pop und Rockabilly etablierten, darunter 101’ers, Motörhead, The Gorillas, The Radio Stars, The Radiators, The Stukas und viele mehr. Auch gabe es Artists die später groß werden sollten:. Joe Strummer war der Frontmann der 101’ers. Johnny & the Self Abusers verwandelten sich später in Simple Minds, während Riff Raff einen jungen Billy Bragg in ihren Reihen hatte. Der Solokünstler Jakko wurde zu einer tragenden Säule einer späteren Inkarnation von King Crimson. Hard Times welcomes back Alex Arnout and his BLACK LOGIC project, following their recent ‘Pull Up’ EP with a second installment of new music from collective - The Illusions EP.

Hailing from West Yorkshire, Arnout spent his formative years on the Hard Times dancefloors, absorbing the beats and vibes that would later shape his own productions. His journey with the label reignited when he was invited to remix Michael Watford’s classic 'Love Change Over' and Steve Silk Hurley’s fresh hit 'All I Need'. Now, he returns with something truly special.

“Black Logic was born out of the pandemic,” says Arnout. “I wanted to move away from drum machines and synths, getting back to sampling jazz and the deep house sounds of the ‘90s - taking inspiration from artists like Bugs in the Attic, Jazzanova, and Ernest Saint Laurent.”

What began as a solo project soon evolved into a collective effort. Bassist and guitarist Alan Riggs, a former member of Delta 5, joined the sessions, bringing warmth and groove to the productions. Vocalists Tempo O’Neil, Anthony Beckford, Mariana Orsho, and Sophie Barker added their distinct voices, completing the vision

Across four tracks, The Illusions EP pulls us deeper into Black Logic’s rich, live-wired universe. The title track pairs Tempo O’Neil’s vocal with a grooving, low-slung bassline, whilst “Dusty” drifts in on brushed snares and ghostly Rhodes, its saxophone lines curling through the mix like smoke. “Chasing Daze,” analog synth shimmer and Tempo’s velvet tones, is a track suspended between head-nod groove and astral lift.

The curtain falls with “Disco Down,” a jubilant ensemble of Hammond organ, flute, guitar, bongos, and horns locking into joyous conversation.

Following the lush listening LP outing by KAMM, the EG team is back in fine floorrocking form, this time with both label operatives on the dials as Rodney joins Dave Aju for his debut co-production. And what a debut it is: Highly-potent, raw, swinging house music of the highest order, complete with knocking 909 kicks, thick slapping snares, and a hypnotic melodic call-and-response tonal section that keeps things properly lifted and moving throughout. The vox evoke label boss Aju’s earlier catalog work, and he’s in particularly pointed mode here, spitting fire spoken word lines calling out various questionable corners of the dance music scene and humanity on the whole. A bold light-shining display during notably dark times, defending the once-sacred underground dance space against runaway trends of ego-driven capitalism, online image over actual skill sets, and the beyond low-ball barrier of entry into the arena. But by the time the soulful chorus lines hit and rise us up and onward toward the blissful musical finish, it is clear that this is in fact a unifying floor anthem and that indeed despite our differences amidst disheartening global chaos, at least “We Still Dancin". As always with the seasoned DJ-focussed three-piece Elbow Grease EP offerings, here we have the full A-side OG Vocal Mix cut at a crispy and tight 45rpm, a deliciously stripped and leveled-up EG Dub Mix on the B1, and finally the uplifting B2 Vibe Mix which doubles-down as half ambient instrumental builder and essential acapellacapella

Followed by the first release last year Chinese label Motivation, curated by B.ai, comes back with its second V.A. featuring Ilkay Yeler, J6, SMEV and NAE. The vinyl attributes in progressive house, electro house and electro.

Opening track “Destiny” ‘s morphing main motif gets kept in check by a steady pulse of snappy bass. Enigmatical vocal samples add to the ambiguous atmosphere, so the sets of twinkling mallets J6 sleekly includes, bring a touch of subtle lightness.

A-2 Ilkay Yeler’s sound is fueled by endless nights of groove, and on “Frontliner” this translates to a hypnotic trip into the deep end. Underneath its dreamlike current of silky chords a steady bass riff propels everything forward, allowing a restless arp to zone in and out.

Flipping to the side B, Sev’s Miami-inspired 808 patterns have “Clearing The Fog” come out of the gates swinging. Bright flutes and big basslines provide this slab of machine funk with a tapestry of melody, and fluorescent synth solos top it off.

Nay ends affairs on a melancholic note with “Silent River”. The leads sound like they ran through an eighties wave pedal chain, and as pondering chords and choirs work their way in, a Juno 6 bass adds extra depth. Still firmly directed at the club, the track escapes easy classification - and suitably closes a diverse yet coherent EP.

Spidergawd sind klassischer Heavy Rock mit gigantischem Melodieverständnis, das teils poppige Züge annimmt. Twin-Gitarren zelebrieren dieses Melodieverständnis exzessiv, duellieren sich und feuern es an und alles steht auf einem solide klassischen NWOBHM Fundament. Für ihr achtes Album in elf Jahren Band-Geschichte haben SPIDERGAWD einen überraschenden Titel gewählt: "From Eight to Infinity" oder "From 8 to _êP". Damit beendet die Band die Verwendung römischer Titel, die sie für ihre vorherigen sieben Alben verwendet hatte. Ansonsten scheint vieles vertraut, wenn sie mit ihrem unverkennbaren SPIDERGAWD-Sound, doppelten Gitarren, dreifachen Gesang und Bariton Saxophon in gewohnt aufwändigem Album Artwork stets wiedererkennbar bleiben. Natürlich bleiben die wichtigsten Referenzen wie Thin Lizzy und Motorhead offensichtlich. Aber während "VII" sich ein wenig an 80er-Jahre-Bands wie Rush, Adrian Smith und Boston anlehnen konnte, ist "From Eight to Infinity" in seinen Referenzen eher bei AC/DC und Cheap Trick auf der einen Seite und Metallica und Black Sabbath auf der anderen. Es gibt scheinbar immer noch keine Anzeichen dafür, dass Spidergawd einen Gang zurückschalten und die Band verspricht nicht nur im Titel eine große Zukunft. All das scheint vielversprechend für die anstehende Tour. Man konnte dies aber auch schon deutlich spüren bei den Support Shows für Judas Priest, ein Band-Traum, der in Erfüllung ging.

Fetter’s Body of Noise erupts at the threshold between ravey hypnosis and avant-pop experiment, slithering through the hinterlands of unconscious desire. Vocals swoon, drift, and demand—stacking into fragments that multiply and weave through saturated pulses and shimmering, snarling synths.

Opening track "Like a Rose" traces a dreamer’s transition into the unstable physics of a perplexing but familiar dream world, where they gradually become lucid. “Beast” follows up humming with shadowed urgency, threading a path through self-sabotage and metamorphosis. “Spathiphyllums” drifts a while in a lush lostness, aching for something new before fracturing into wild, cathartic collapse. Side B’s “Do I Exist? (D.I.E)” and “The Longing” spiral into existential wonder, searching for a human origin story—both personal and collective—against a backdrop of uncertainty, while “Headache” thrusts forward as an absurd and insistent manifesto to stay the course and harness one’s own power within the madness.

Rooted in all-hardware improvised production and shaped by Fetter’s years of boundary-blurring visual and performance art, their debut LP feels alive and in flux. Fetter makes clubby self-destructing noise pop to dance and weep to. Oscillating between ethereal and pounding, their all-hardware, largely improvised live sets take listeners through a foggy wilderness of saturated rhythms and menacing synth lines, a golden voice guiding the way through. Fetter is the stage moniker of multimedia artist Jess Tucker. Their performances take place in clubs as well as galleries, often incorporating video, installation, and interactive performance art elements to create other-worldly surrounds of mesmerizingly unhinged bodies and faces.

Ruby Rushton"s fifth studio album Legacy! written by band leader Tenderlonious and keys player Aidan Shepherd, marks a new chapter for the hugely influential UK jazz group. In the past the band - which also includes trumpeter Nick Walters and drummer Tim Carnegie - worked with a "one take" live approach; avoiding the use of overdubs. For Legacy! the four musicians decided to combine their virtuosic abilities with Tenderlonious" studio production skills. Each of the compositions sees layers of horn and flute lines added to the melodies on top of the original live takes. The result is impressive; the listener is left with a wider sonic spectrum than previously heard on Ruby Rushton albums.

MJ Lenderman writes songs that are amorphous and elastic, rising to fill the venue they"re in, generous to accommodate the number of players on stage, less concerned with replicating the studio version than they are with meeting the crowd where they"re at. On And the Wind (Live and Loose!), the Asheville-based Lenderman handles most of the playing, but with The Wind, it"s a multi-headed beast. This live album is culled from sold-out summer 2023 shows on a brief headline run during what some might call a wild-*ss couple of months. Nu Groove spotlights the artists that made the legendary NYC label a firm favourite of crate diggers then and now with this special vinyl release of their vital tracks revisited by leading selectors of today. The label, born in 1988 by Frank and Karen Mendez as an outlet for the experimental works of the Burrell Brothers, quickly became a home for up-and-coming genre pioneers. Nu Groove Edits, Vol. 7 opens with the NiCe7 Edit of ‘Feel It’ by NYC favourites The Sound Vandals. More monikers of Rheji Burrell appear in the collection too, as the seminal ‘APT. 2B’ by N.Y. House’n Authority is reworked by Steve Bug, followed by Darius Syrossian’s edit of ‘C’Mon’ by Rheji’s Avant Garde moniker. Make A Dance’s edit of the Rhano Burrell classic ‘I’ve Fallen And I Can’t Get Up’, under his You Know Who! alias, closes out this vinyl collection of future record box staples.

Wrong Filament embodies Robert Piotrowicz's creation of fictional traditional music - not studied but invented, a utopian and oniric construct that becomes tangible in sound. These imagined traditions act as communal forces of music-making, resisting dominant structures of power.

The album unfolds in six dense compositions built on rhythm, repetition and minimal melodic gestures that draw on archetypal patterns of Eastern European traditions. Entirely synthetic yet strikingly instrumental in character, they develop as autonomous sound events, expanding into multi-part forms that evoke the physicality of ensemble performance - as if played by an imagined community of musicians.

Rather than reconstruction, Piotrowicz invents forged dances - a pre-techno of sorts, where complex meters and dense textures point to a parallel history of collective sound beyond industrial uniformity. They imagine a utopian and fictional genealogy of collective sound: one where industrial modernity yields to more unstable, communal energies.

This is celebratory music with invocatory charge: calls to dance, echoes of ceremony, microtonal melodies shaped by emotional weight, and traces of Eastern ornamentation stretched through synthetic means. Wrong Filament sacralises performance through sound alone, spinning a world where spectres of collective experience vibrate against the limits of rupture and resistance.

These pieces confront the traces of violence inscribed in body and memory, yet also affirm freedom, emancipation and integration. They manifest celebration, identity and resistance while opening a path toward liberation and shared needs that exceed social, private and intimate categories.

Erik K Skodvin summons his alter ego Svarte Greiner for a dive into the dark, wintery Swedish forest with the score to the psychological thriller/horror film “From Darkness” (orig: Ur Mörkret).

The film is director Philip W. Da Silva's debut and is set largely at night, deep in a Swedish nature reserve where mining used to take place. Loss, mental health and Nordic mythology come together in a story that revolves around the search for a missing woman. The score follows an eclectic and atmospherical path throughout the narrative with an uneasy underlaying vibe; although one with occasional points of refuge in the otherwise vast darkness. There is a gloomy, barely tangible sound of Nordic folk tradition buried in the music, even if it comes across in a different, more abstract way, where the various instruments are often used more as sound sources that are improvised (and abused) into becoming their own element. Skodvin performed and recorded the majority himself. In addition, he commissioned free improviser Axel Dörner to participate with his unique, custom-built electro-acoustic interface, which, along with Claudio Puntin's processed reeds and additional electronics, has been built into the elaborate backdrops to create an entire world that balances on the border between the approachable and the elusive - not unlike the journey of the protagonists. Skodvin's partner in Deaf Center, Otto A Totland, appears on piano in the stand out piece “What have you become?”.

The result is a harrowing yet deeply melancholic journey through the human psyche. One that echoes through the dark forests, cabins and lost mines of the desolate Swedish woodlands.

“It is presumed that as humans mined ore in the 1800s, they had many mishaps and dug too deep, leading them to assume they had unleashed some evil spirit that was guarding the ore. She was referred to as "Cave Wraith". It was said that she employed darkness to lure miners to their deaths. They prohibited villagers from visiting during the darkest months of the year. Some used sacrifices to subdue the evil entity.”

The vinyl is released in an edition of 150 numbered copies, with screenprinted artwork on black cardboard inside a screenprinted PVC sleeve, incl. Riso-printed insert with liner notes by Mike Lazarev, 180g vinyl.

Adhémar’s first solo release on Oslated drives us into the geological matter of the mountains. Composed of an ecosystem of the artist’s own sounds, which unfold organically, “Mountain View” reveals the life of these alpine spaces. Between panoramic views, melting snow, birds chattering the pine trees and the rolling of stones, each detail places us in a different point of view.

In This Moment is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed by singer Maria Brink

Mit "Cotton Crown" erweitert die Band ihre Klangpalette um eine kaleidoskopische Bandbreite an Einflüssen: Von gefühlvollem Pub-Rock über HÜSKER DÜ-Aggression bis hin zu melancholischem Sophisto-Pop ist alles dabei. Wie Pitchfork feststellte, sehen THE TUBS den Jangle als eine "riesige Welt der Stimmungen und Musen" und "Cotton Crown" zeigt, wie sie diese Welt weiter erforschen und dabei einen unverwechselbaren Tub-ular-Sound kreieren. Das liegt nicht zuletzt an der Gesangsleistung von Owen 'O' Williams, der oft mit einem jungen RICHARD THOMPSON verglichen wird, und an seinen offenen, düster-komischen Texten. In "Cotton Crown" widmet er sich weiter seinen Lieblingsthemen: Liebespsychose, unsympathisches, psychisch krankes Verhalten und die Demütigungen des Musikerdaseins in London. Dieses Mal ist jedoch ein Gefühl des Risikos in seinen Selbsteinschätzungen und Bekenntnissen spürbar. Im Mittelpunkt steht das Leben in der Zeit nach dem Selbstmord seiner Mutter (der Folksängerin Charlotte Greig), und Williams singt über die unbeholfenen, aufdringlichen und gut gemeinten sozialen Interaktionen, die darauf folgten. Das Albumcover zeigt ein Bild von Williams als Säugling, der von Greig auf einem Friedhof gestillt wird - ein Werbefoto, das um die Veröffentlichung des Debütalbums von Charlotte Greig herum aufgenommen wurde. Der wesentliche Trick von "Cotton Crown" besteht darin, die lyrische Düsternis von Williams durch fröhliche, hakengeladene Pop-Perfektion zu kompensieren. Das liegt vor allem an der Gitarrenarbeit von George Nicholls, der auf dem Album mühelos zwischen dem virtuosen Jangle von JOHNNY MARR, dem treibenden Folk-Rock von PENTANGLE und den Refrain-lastigen Hi-Fi-Grooves zeitgenössischer Bands wie TOPS oder THE 1975 hin- und herwechselt. Dazu kommt die halsbrecherische Rhythmusgruppe von Taylor Stewart (Schlagzeug) und Max Warren (Bass) - die jeden Song mit einer Power-Pop-Wut angreifen, die an GUIDED BY VOICES in ihren besten Zeiten erinnert - und schon hat man ein Rezept für großartigen Indie-Rock. Das Debütalbum der Band, "Dead Meat", wurde durch Mundpropaganda zu einer Sensation, die der Band Auszeichnungen von Pitchfork, The Guardian, MOJO, Uncut, SPIN und anderen einbrachte. Sie gewannen sogar einige prominente Fans: der unnachahmliche Mark Proksch (The Office, Better Call Saul, What We Do in the Shadows) spielte die Hauptrolle im Video zu ihrer Single "Round The Bend" und die Punk-Legende IGGY POP lobte sie in seiner BBC 6Music Radiosendung.
