einbezieht und die intensiven Metal-Kompositionen des Hauptacts außen vor lässt. Es ist etwas, das seit Jahren wächst, aber im Jahr 2022 nahm es
seine eigene Form an. In Abkehr von der unerbittlichen Energie des Metal verfolgt Dimbild einen gedämpfteren und introspektiveren Ansatz beim
Musikmachen. Das Projekt ermöglichte es Vintersorg, eine andere Facette seines künstlerischen Ausdrucks zu erforschen und tiefer in die Gefilde der
Folk- und Akustikmusik einzutauchen, in die ein Hauch von Melancholie eingeflochten ist. Die Musik von Dimbild, die sich von der Natur, der
Mythologie und existenziellen Themen inspirieren lässt, entführt den Hörer in eine andere Welt, in der sich Emotionen mit den Klängen von
Akustikgitarren, Perkussion und dem markanten Gesang von Vintersorg vermischen.

While Duster went into hibernation in the year 2000, Clay Parton's four-track never stopped rolling. Recorded alone at home over several years, Birds In The Ground is an album of 30-something, post-9/11 malaise. Under his Eiafuawn (Everything Is All Fucked Up And What Not) acronym, Parton hides beneath layers of fuzzy and clean guitars, his hesitant, cottony vocal disappear into noise. This deluxe pressing is packaged in a gorgeous tip on sleeve and includes the complete lyrics for this cryptic entry of the Dusterverse.

3. Album der instrumentale Rock-Band Der Neue Planet aus Köln. Sie bezeichnen ihre Musik als"Heavy Dream Prog" bezeichnen: Schwere wuchtige Stoner Riffs bilden den Kontrast zu verträumt-spielerischen Post-Rock-Melodien und immer wieder wird man als Hörer durch Stilwechsel überrascht. Die Songs sind lang und entfalten einen wilden Genre Mix verschiedener Einflüsse: Jazz, Latin, Funk, Metal, Doom, Psychedelic oder Disco. Die Kompositionen sind vielseitig und progressiv ohne dabei in technische Dudelei oder laut-leise Post Rock Klischees zu verfallen. In fünf sehr unterschiedlichen Stücken tobt sich die Band aus und berührt zahlreiche Stile der Musikgeschichte, ohne ihren eigenen melodischen Wiedererkennungswert zu verlieren. Eine genaue Genre-Einordnung fällt schwer. Post- und Stoner Rock Elemente verschmelzen mit Sounds von Funk bis Jazz, über Kraut- und Psychedelic-Rock Parts, bis hin zu knüppelharten Metal-Klatschen. Wie bei Der Neue Planet üblich gibt es eine Menge zu entdecken.

In 2004, California-based indie band Golden Shoulders followed up their highly acclaimed debut with their second album, Friendship Is Deep. Now, on the twentieth anniversary of its release, the album most requested by their fans for a vinyl release is finally set for one on Unspun Heroes. Described as “one of the great semi-lost albums of the 21st Century”, the album showcases singer, songwriter, and band mainstay, Adam Kline’s knack for lyrical hooks and penchant for catchy melodies. But, like friendship, this is deeper than its pop sensibilities might suggest.
 
From the moment the opening track I Will Light You On Fire opens with its simple piano refrain and vocal harmonies you know you’re listening to something worthy of further exploration. From this building of tension between its temporary aural chaos and the beauty that ultimately emerges, you’ll be hooked. Yet, scratch beneath the surface and you’ll find this is an album that carries with it a political, pro-peace, and pro-humanity message, albeit somewhat more satirical than you might expect of a band hailing from America’s West Coast. This is particularly notable on tracks such as Golden Soldiers and the Committee, where Kline’s turn of phrase and wit shines through, cleverly weaving words so they create detailed poetic mosaics. 

Golden Shoulders is a loose and ever-changing lineup of international talent, with Kline as the kingpin and sole songwriter. Given the pedigree of those whose talents grace the album – among them, Todd Roper and Greg Brown (Cake), Josh Klinghoffer (PJ Harvey, RHCP, Pearl Jam), Neal Morgan (Joanna Newsom, Fleet Foxes), and Dan Elkan (Broken Bells) – it’s no surprise the compositions and attention to detail present in each and every one of the 14 songs is top notch. It’s this pleasing mix of accomplished individuals, and their mishmash of influences, which lend a pinball effect to the set of stylistically diverse songs on Friendship Is Deep. Collectively though, the music you’ll hear has a focus, one that channels late 90’s Brendan Benson, the poppier side of 80’s Violent Femmes, and even the mid-60’s flair of the Beatles’ Rubber Soul.

Escape into the vast universe inside yourself :

The Circus is a place of lights and colors, but also of shadows, even darkness. Admittedly, it delights children and makes adults laugh. But you only need one rainy autumn evening near a circus tent and the smell of fodder to think of the sadness of the clowns, the endless training of the animals and the freaks who are hidden in some caravan... cinema, the essence of the circus – movement, light, danger and burlesque – will have been admirably rendered in Notes on the circus by Jonas Mekas (1966), one of the inventors of the filmed diary. With Cirque, Michèle Bokanowski does similar work, entirely dedicated to spinning, in the musical field.

She distinguished herself in particular in the composition of musique concrète, among others Tabou and Trois chambres d'inquiétudes, after having studied with Pierre Schaeffer and Éliane Radigue. The latter, great lady of drone and minimalism, fell under the spell of Cirque and wrote the booklet for the piece as a poem.

The piece, divided into five movements, is based on the handling and editing of recordings captured within one or more circuses (this is not specified and is of no importance) between 1988 and 1993. The initial allegro reveals the gallop of a horse joined gradually by other images. The idea of the circular space of the circus tent is immediatly and magnificently rendered and will be constantly recalled by an insistent use of the loop technique. Children's laughter, applause and drum rolls are thus sheared, repeated before being brutally interrupted. Accordion interludes and the distortion of sounds create a dreamlike atmosphere. This beautiful nightmare reminds us, to quote Éliane Radigue, the "Magic of childhood still living in the heart of man even beyond its abrupt end."

Major member of the french musique concrète scene, Michèle Bokanowski was born on August 9, 1943 in Cannes, FR, to a musician mother and a writer father. She now lives and works in Paris.
Music lover since adolescence, it was relatively late, at the age of 22, that Michèle Bokanowski decided to study composition. Reading In Search of a Concrete Music by Pierre Schaeffer was decisive. After classical training on harmony, she met Michel Puig, a student of René Leibowitz, who taught her writing and analysis based on the Treatise of Schönberg. In September 1970 she began a two-year internship in the ORTF Research Department under the direction of Pierre Schaeffer. She takes part in the same time in a research group on sound synthesis, studies musical computing at the Faculty of Vincennes and electronic music with Éliane Radigue.
Her main works are intended for concert: Pour un pianiste, Trois chambres d’inquiétude, Tabou, Phone Variations, Cirque, L’étoile Absinthe, Chant d’Ombre, Enfance, Rhapsodia, Cadence, Elsewhere. She has also composed for theater (with Catherine Dasté), dance (with choreographers Hideyuki Yano, Marceline Lartigue, Bernardo Montet) and cinema: music for the short films of Patrick Bokanowski and his two feature films L'Ange ( 1982) and A Solar Dream (2016).

Following a ten-part series of unannounced artist records and a spectacular high-concept album on Mask Records, label head ZentaSkai returns to the imprint for his next solo vinyl-only release, ‘Bob’.
The A1 sees the Berlin-based ZentaSkai combine a dusty, taped white noise feel with subtle, swirling dub chords as its high-end propels the track forward. It’s a stunning and evocative piece before the A2 continues with minimal drums and electric acid bleeps, a smooth organ lead completing its gorgeous soundscape.
On the B-side of the ‘Bob’ EP, ZentaSkai joins forces with long-time collaborator Sebastian Klenk. It follows their
‘Apeiron’ track on ZentaSkai’s 2023 ‘Architecture Of The Mind’ LP, among other joint work, and sees them deliver a near-twelve-minute track that is a true masterpiece. The track takes listeners through found-sound texture samples, intricate drum patterns, crunchy breakbeats, and more beautiful dub melodics.
‘Bob’ is another fantastic listening experience on Mask Records, already supported by Satoshi Tomiie, Raresh and Laurent Garnier.

Zusammen mit Bands wie Hans-A-Plast und Der Moderne Man gehören Rotzkotz Anfang der 80er zum Umfeld von No Fun Records, einem hannoverschen Label aus der linksalternativen Szene. Gute 40 Jahre später wird das Album jetzt inklusive der zwei Songs der "Kein Problem"-Single (ein kurzer Ausflug zum Major EMI) wiederveröffentlicht - neu gemastert und ergänzt um ausführliche Linernotes sowie bisher unveröffentlichtes Bildmaterial. Zwischen Punk und Avantgarde, zwischen elektronischen Sounds und digitaler Dystopie, zwischen Majorlabel-Deal und No Fun Records, zwischen 70ern und 80ern - Rotzkotz sitzen zwischen allen denkbaren Stühlen und schaffen es dabei, mit Farbenfroh + Lebensfroh ihre Nische auf eine auch heute noch außergewöhnliche Art zu besetzen.

American Standard beginnt mit einem Schock. Sänger Michael Berdan steht allein und schreit: "A part of me, but it can't be me. Oh God, it can't." Alles beginnt mit einem Geständnis. Hinter den erschütternden Schreien verbirgt sich der Schmerz der Bulimia nervosa. Es ist der Schmerz einer Krankheit, die ebenso physisch wie psychisch ist. Dies ist eine Art von Aufbruch. Mit jedem Satz von American Standard schält Uniform eine neue Schicht ab und erzählt die Geschichte im Inneren der vorhergehenden. Die Texte dringen in den Kern des innersten Selbst ein, in das kleine menschliche Wesen, das im Griff der Krankheit zerquetscht wird. Um diese Geschichte von Essstörungen, Selbsthass, Wahnvorstellungen, Manie und letztendlicher Entdeckung zu entschlüsseln, holte sich Berdan Hilfe von zwei überragenden literarischen Außenseiterfiguren. Zusammen mit B.R. Yeager (Autor des modernen Kult-Klassikers Negative Space) und Maggie Siebert (dem Kopf hinter dem zeitgenössischen Body-Horror-Meisterwerk Bonding) nehmen die drei Autoren das persönliche Material auseinander, um ein Porträt psychischer und physischer Krankheit zu präsentieren, das so eindringlich und erschreckend ist wie nichts anderes im heutigen Kanon. Das Ergebnis ist eine akkurate Artikulation eines Zustands, der über einfache Qualen hinausgeht, und fängt die aufregende Transzendenz und Befreiung ein, die Krankheit in diesem Prozess bringen kann. American Standard ist mit Sicherheit das thematisch gelungenste und musikalisch selbstbewussteste Album von Uniform, das es bisher gab. Abschnitte drehen sich und explodieren. Motive driften ins Ungewisse ab, bevor sie sich mit neuer Kraft wieder durchsetzen. Genres kollidieren und brechen auf und formen etwas Eigenwilliges und Neues. Es gibt eine Größe, die zum Teil auf die Hinzufügung des Interpol-Bassisten Brad Truax zurückzuführen ist, zusammen mit dem perkussiven Druck und Zug des zurückkehrenden Schlagzeugers Michael Sharp und des langjährigen Tour-Schlagzeugers Michael Bloom, der hier sein Uniform-Aufnahme-Debüt gibt. Diese Großartigkeit ist jedoch ganz klar der Größe und Kraft der Arrangements von Gitarrist und Gründer Ben Greenberg zuzuschreiben, die immer elegant zu den intensiven lyrischen Themen passen. Ohne den geringsten Zweifel ist American Standard ein Kunstwerk, quälend in seiner Ehrlichkeit und unerbittlich in seinem Streben nach klanglicher Transzendenz. Es ist abscheulich. delving ist ein Studioprojekt des Multiinstrumentalisten Nicholas DiSalvo, der vor allem als Frontmann der Heavy-Psych-Rock-Band Elder bekannt ist. 'All Paths Diverge' folgt auf das 2021 erschienene Debütalbum 'Hirschbrunnen' und setzt DiSalvos unvorhergesehenen Weg als einer der einzigartigsten Songwriter des Psychedelic-Rock-Genres fort. Nach anderthalb Jahrzehnten als Frontmann des bahnbrechenden progressiven Psychedelic-Quartetts Elder gründete DiSalvo delving als zweites Ventil, um musikalische Ideen auszudrücken, die nicht in das Paradigma seiner Hauptband passten. Später rief er noch die Projekte Weite und Eldovar (mit Kadavar) ins Leben. Delving erforscht Instrumentalmusik mit einem starken Fokus auf Psychedelic Rock, Krautrock, frühe elektronische Musik sowie Ambient-Sounds, und zeigt dennoch immer die eindrucksvollen Melodien und das einzigartige Songwriting, die seine Markenzeichen sind.
Die sieben langen Tracks des Albums wurden erneut aus einem ständig wachsenden Songbook voller Ideen ausgewählt, und sind eine Momentaufnahme von DiSalvos aktuellen musikalischen Interessen sowie seiner Liebe zur Klangerkundung und vermeiden Genre-Grenzen. Der Albumtitel ist als subtile Abfuhr des alten Sprichworts "Alle Wege führen nach Rom" gedacht und stellt klar, dass Veränderungen unvermeidlich sind und nichts in Stein gemeißelt ist.

Danish tenor and soprano saxophonist Søren Skov (Debre Damo Dining Orchestra) and keyboardist Peder Vind co-founded the trippy quintet Søren Skov Orbit in 2016 to explore “more jazzy ideas,” as the saxophonist puts it. Joined by a rhythm section steeped in contemporary improvisation and psychedelia, bassist Casper Nyvang Rask, drummer Rune Lohse and percussionist Ayi Solomon of the legendary 80's Ghanaian roots/highlife band Classique Vibes, the Orbit belts out a richly focused helping of broadly African-inspired modern jazz with a hazy sheen.

On the opening “Notifications of Nothingness,” Skov digs in his heels, a steely but languid unspooling of burnished tenor lines atop condensed, quavering piano and the thick footfalls of bass and percussion. As a tenor player, Skov has done his homework and has a kinship with Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, J.R. Monterose, and the Dutchman Hans Dulfer, but he clearly has got his own robust phraseology and expressiveness. He also cites multi-reedists John Gilmore, Yusef Lateef, and Bilal Abdurahman as, “some of the players I’ve been listening to the most for the last 10-15 years.”

A healthy dose of reverb is present throughout the album, echoing Alton Abraham’s studio wizardry with the Sun Ra Arkestra or the trance-inducing and compressed fidelity of certain Ethio-jazz and Mystic Revelations of Rastafari sessions. Skov notes that, “everything is recorded live at the same time in the same room. I wanted to do it that way in order to catch the dynamics and authenticity of the music.” There is, in fact, a complex teeter- totter between crisp and hazy execution, achieved by a delicately balanced mix that keeps the group’s sound simultaneously advancing and receding. Vind’s phrasing is terse and introspective, a vibrating echo that nudges and reflects on Skov’s brusque tenor in a dance of sonic displacement.

“Orbiting” pits a chunky backbeat and the teetering, taut hand-rhythms of Solomon against an infectious, almost microtonal piano riff, while Skov’s arpeggios are clean and florid as he patiently rises up from under a carpet of funky loops. Following the freer “Reflections of Rif,” “Naration” lilts with a wink at “Footprints” and tugs between up-tempo polyrhythmic drive, clanging keyboard accents, and the innately steadfast keenness of the bandleader. The coupling of Solomon and Lohse is a big part of the group’s detailed energy; as the leader puts it, “Ayi knows everything about regional differences in drum patterns. He is always listening and super responsive, and his and Rune’s dynamics are amazing.” The music both presents a “vibe” and keeps the door open for engaging well under the surface as repeated listens will be extremely rewarding.

Easton fully embraces her new upbeat, pop-funk direction on tracks like the Top 30 US dance hits ‘Do It For Love’ and classic Motown cover ‘Jimmy Mack’, as well as sensual groove ballads like ‘Magic Of Love’ and ‘When The Lightning Strikes Again’.

David DeFeis hat der Wiederveröffentlichung ebenfalls den Spitznamen ‚The Anniversary Edition‘ gegeben, denn wie beim Re-Release des Virgin Steele-Debüts hat er das komplette Album von Anfang bis Ende neu gemischt. Er sagt: „Es macht Sinn, diesen Titel hinzuzufügen, denn genau wie bei Virgin Steele 1 ist auch dies eine ganz besondere Neuauflage. Auch hier gilt: ‚Guardians Of The Flame‘ ist ein großes Fest! Jeder Song wurde liebevoll restauriert und mit festem Glauben, heißem Herz und hartem Stahl neu gemischt.

Kompakt is proud to announce, finally, a reissue of the first, self-titled GAS album. Originally released on electronica imprint Mille Plateaux back in 1996, it’s been unavailable in its original form ever since – the version of GAS included in 2008’s Nah Und Fern box featured several different tracks. Here, however, GAS is restored in all its glory, the debut full-length from Wolfgang Voigt’s most enigmatic, quixotic project.

There had, of course, been signs of what was to come. Back in 1995, Voigt essayed the first GAS release, a slender, yet remarkable four-track EP, Modern. Its centre label featured a reduced symbol – an overhead or lamp light, switched on, its glow radiating outwards in four bold black lines – a perfect representation of the tight, stylised ambient electronic pop contained on that 12”. A few curious compilation tracks were floating around, too, for Mille Plateaux’s Modulation & Transformation and Electric Ladyland series. If you were attentive enough, you could tell something was up.

But nothing quite prepared us for the languorous, effervescing loops and regular-like-clockwork beats that Voigt folded together on GAS. Its six long tracks, all untitled, neither begin nor end but hazily fade into earshot, vibrate majestically in your cochlea for fifteen-or-so minutes – some a bit shorter, some longer – and then meander away, reading the mise-en-scène for the next example of Voigt’s drift and dream logic to unfold. The material is referential in the most distant way, and you can sense only the most evanescent of ghostly presences, haunting these six compositions.

GAS feels, also, like a more pliable hint at what’s to come, as the GAS concept really solidified on its successor, 1997’s Zauberberg, and reach its apotheosis on Königsforst and Pop. Those three albums share a very similar palette – blurred, hazy samples, often of classical music, stacked and cross-thatched across a muted 4/4 thud. GAS, then, is an outlier of sorts: it’s more expansive in its remit, lighter in its mood, perhaps more fleet of foot. This, of course, is part of its charm.

In clearing space for Voigt, by preparing the terrain, GAS sits both at the edge of the forest, and at the verge of an expansive, wide-eyed future; one where GAS would become truly eternal.

Kompakt ist stolz, endlich eine Neuauflage des ersten, selbstbetitelten GAS-Albums ankündigen zu können. Ursprünglich im Jahr 1996 auf dem Electronica-Label Mille Plateaux veröffentlicht, ist es seitdem nicht mehr in seiner ursprünglichen Form erhältlich – die gleichnamige Version von GAS, die 2008 in der Nah Und Fern Box enthalten war, enthielt verschiedene andere Titel. Nun liegt das 3er Album in seinem naturbelassenen Originalzustand wieder vor.

Bereits 1995 zeichnete sich mit der Maxi GAS - Modern auf Profan, sowie einigen Kompilation-Beiträgen auf Modulation & Transformation und Electric Ladyland auf Mille Plateaux dieser frühe, weltentrückte, rätselhafte GAS Sound ab, der sich erst in den sechs scheinbar endlosen, majestätisch-sprudelnden Tracks des Albums voll entfaltete. Die Musik ist von ätherischer Leichtigkeit, in der wie aus einer anderen Sphäre abstrakte Referenzen aus weiter Ferne nur andeutungsweise herüberzuwehen scheinen.

Dieser frühe, eher sphärisch-leichte, gleich einer sonnendurchfluteten (Wald-)Lichtung anmutende GAS Sound, stellt gewissermaßen den Ausgangspunkt der audiovisuellen „Welt“-Reise in den düster-romantischen Acid-Wald dar, in den sich GAS ab 1997 mit den Alben Zauberberg, Königsforst, Oktember und ab 2000 mit Pop an anderer Stelle wieder hinaus und in seine ganz eigene Ewigkeit begeben hat.

Legions Of Doom, die Doom-Metal-Supergroup mit Mitgliedern von The Skull, Trouble, Saint Vitus und Corrosion Of Conformity mit einer brandneuen, limitierten 7inch auf Tee Pee Records. Ursprünglich für das dritte The Skull-Album vorgesehen, begannen die Arbeiten an 'All Good Things' vor dem Tod von Eric Wagner (Ex-Trouble) im Jahr 2021. Es übernahm Karl Agell (Lie Heavy, C.O.C., Blind) die Vocals, unterstützt von The Skulls Ron Holzner (ebenfalls Ex-Trouble) am Bass, Lothar Keller an der Gitarre und Henry Vasquez (Druma), wobei Scott Little an der Gitarre und David Snyder (Trouble, BlackFinger) noch mit an Bord waren. Texte über Hoffnung und Geduld krönen einen flüssigen, schweren Groove und ein knackiges Refrain-Riff in aufrichtiger Metal-Manier. Auf dem Deep Purple-Cover 'Into The Fire' auf der B-Seite verleiht die Band einem Klassiker ihren eigenen Stil - Rock und eine Hommage an die Wurzeln des Doom im Swing-Groove der frühen 70er. Hallowed Ground is a testament to the richness and depth of Motor City’s musical background. It encapsulates a diverse range of genres, from the soulful rhythms of Soul and Funk to the pulsating beats of Techno and beyond.

Bubblegum XX features features members of Queens of the Stone Age, PJ Harvey, Greg Dulli, Izzy and Duff from Guns & Roses/Velvet Revolver, among other assorted rock luminaries. When Bubblegum was released, Mark chose to let it speak for itself and didn"t have much to say aside from within the small handful of interviews he did at the time. In 2017, he released a book of lyrics and writings called I Am The Wolf and wrote about the album then. Shared here are some of his words about the record. Song favorites include "When Your Number Isn"t Up," and "Strange Religion," a love song I wrote in a Tokyo hotel room. While many of the songs came from a place of dejection and ennui at the end of a tempestuous relationship, "Bombed" in particular came about when, after I had written and recorded it in just a few minutes, I put a microphone in front of Wendy Rae Fowler, my soon-to-be-ex-wife, and had her sing along while simultaneously hearing it for the first time. I loved the result as it reminded me of Royal Trux, a band I liked. When I insisted on using the first and only take of the song, it made her slightly unhappy, but to be fair, that was just one of many things I did that had that effect.

"Magdalena Bay, the Los Angeles-based duo of Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin, create magical pop music that floats in the ether of our collective social cosmos. While they call California home, their essence lies in the clouds, emitting unique yet familiar frequencies of synthesized nostalgia, kitschy catchiness, and warped neo-hooks. Suited for the times, Magdalena Bay blends the known and felt with innovative sonic landscapes.

Tenenbaum and Lewin met as teenagers in a Miami high school music program. Tenenbaum, who moved from Buenos Aires to Florida at age one, and Lewin, a guitar shredder influenced by his dad’s prog and concept rock records, quickly recognized their kindred spirits. They formed a prog band called Tabula Rasa and began a romance. Both were skilled musicians; Tenenbaum a pianist and singer, and Lewin self-taught in production and music theory. Despite attending different colleges, they maintained their band, traveling hours to rehearse before realizing two things: their relationship was undeniable, and prog rock wasn’t resonating with young audiences.

Shifting their focus to pop, they explored its craft, leading to the creation of Magdalena Bay. They learned the complexities of pop writing and production, striving to create something interesting within the genre. Describing their music broadly as ""pop,"" they released several EPs and singles before debuting their album, ""Mercurial World,"" in 2021. Praised for its melodic hooks and meticulous production, it was often labeled as ""synth-pop.""

Their success is reflected in streaming numbers, social media followers, and festival appearances. Magdalena Bay's stylized online aesthetic complements their music, creating a cohesive artistic vision. Tenenbaum says, “We love extending the world of our music past sound into videos or graphics.” Lewin adds, “We’re trying to create an atmosphere or an emotional quality with it.” This integrated approach, termed ""world-building,"" is central to their artistry."

BBsitters Club is a rock band based in Chicago that features Doug Kaplan and Charlie Olvera on guitar and vocals, Max Allison on bass, and Paul Birhanu on drums. As the label’s de-facto in-haus band, BBsitters Club satisfies Hausu Mountain co-founders Allison and Kaplan’s urge to remain connected to the rock and roll music they grew up loving and playing — far across the spectrum from the experimental electronics featured on the lion’s share of HausMo releases.

A solid four years after the one-two-punch releases of BBsitters Club & Party, the band’s 2020 debut studio album, and Joel’s Pick’s Vol. 1, the first volume in a series of audience-recorded live takes from shows around Chicago, we find the BBs reviving the Joel’s Pick’s series with Vol. 2. Charged with the energy of a close-knit group of friends willing to follow along with each other’s most outlandish ideas both in composition and live performance, JPV2 offers us a bewildering yet always tongue-in-cheek palette of ideas cherry-picked and mashed together into amalgams that both embrace “rock traditions” and defy them with a cherubic grin.

BBsitters Club’s amorphous compositions land somewhere between the world’s most baked prog band and a jamband that’s never content to lapse into wheel-spinning complacency. On JPV2, BBsitters Club cartwheel between eras and styles of rock music with abandon — a TV stuck flipping channels after your dad falls asleep with one leg on the remote. We encounter the elliptical dueling guitars and autumnal atmospheres of midwest emo / math rock, the gregarious stomp of electrified country rock, blues rock that has melted from ingesting one too many hallucinogens, and fried Devo-style art punk that breaches into the realms of ska before melting into free-form noise rock flecked with the bizarro imitative instrument tones of Kaplan’s MIDI guitar.

Guided by San Francisco musician Andy Pastalaniec, Chime School pays homage to the formative jangle of The Byrds by way of early Primal Scream and The Springfields; the production and pop sensibility of Biff Bang Pow! and The Razorcuts; and the spirit of great singles labels like Creation, Postcard and Sarah. Although it would have fit with any of those labels, Chime School found a natural home with Bay Area indie stalwart Slumberland Records, releasing a self-titled debut in 2021, and a follow-up 7” single in 2023, to broad acclaim.

The wild greaser with an ever-broken heart, Cong Josie, is back! His eagerly anticipated sophomore album; Moto Zone, pulls up throbbing, revving, sweating and grinding hotter than bitumen on a summer day. It is a non-stop EBM’in’, synth-punkin’, rock ’n’ rollin’ and doo-woppin’ sizzler, in much the same vein as his 2021 debut Cong!. With this release however, Cong pushes his own M.O. even deeper. The throbs get bolder, the NRG goes harder, slow sleaze hip-grinding enters and the dream washes return to envelope all that hear them like a siren’s call. On Moto Zone, Cong conjures the age of rock ’n’ roll, a world of motorcycle gangs and hot rods, leather, chains, backcombing and hair pomade, with an Aussie twist on greaser ‘cool’. Confessional lyrics tell tales of addiction and mental illness tracing the scars of a troubled past. Cong says the “Moto Zone” reflects his daily life and mindset. A life of ADHD, burning the midnight oil, living on black coffee, obsessively creating and revving through every day. Ultimately Cong is reaching for bliss, feeling connection and a new world in these songs. Exhilarating? Anxious? Hedonistic? Dangerous? Beautiful? A lust for life? The record is all of the above.

Nick Maurer’s Come On In! is the stuff of a modern American fable. The 20 year-old Cincinnatian’s first release on Happy Families feels wise beyond years but is equally moving in its innocent enthusiasm. Written while still in highschool and recorded using his cellphone, Come On In! is best enjoyed live, but even on vinyl or digitally, the album feels timeless, like you are stepping into a colorful picture book illustrated with a careful hand.

The third album from beloved Nashville indie rockers The Medium, City Life is the first they’ve produced on their own. Recorded in their homes with the help of a few friends, this grassroots approach to recording captures them simultaneously at their most relaxed as well as their most airtight. Ironically, City Life presents the quartet sounding their most country yet – sonically embracing some of the musical territory of their hometown as well as lyrically wrestling with the challenges of its rapid changes. With contributions from talents like Jovana Ćuk, the album transcends traditional genre boundaries. Fåntratt’s unique sound pays homage to influences like Bo Hansson, Örnatorpet, Paysage d'Hiver and Ildjarn while charting a new course in the realm of esoteric music.

10 years after its release, Lydia Loveless sits down at the piano for an intimate reimagining of her landmark album, Somewhere Else. Title track featuring guest vocals by Jason Isbell. “Over the last 10 years I’ve been told by countless people, emotional and earnest, that their favorite record of mine is Something Else. I love that, and I nod in amused reverence to it here. The me of 2012-2013 was drowning in pain and insecurity and my own press, pissed off that nobody could see me for who I really was, what I had really been through, and how hard it was to be me. I was walled in by fears and worries that I would never be good enough. I was struggling with my voice after a debilitating virus and a six week tour. I had rented a little room in the Grandview neighborhood of Columbus and was plugging away on my splintered acoustic guitar with a tape recorder.

I was frustrated as could be, not coming up with anything that I felt was 'me' or even remotely song like. One day, when I finally thought I had a nugget of something, I read the lyrics aloud to my then husband and he looked at me confused and said, 'what are you even trying to say in this, though? Who is the narrator?' I don’t remember what I said to that but I’m sure it wasn’t kind. When I went back into the studio with my friend Caeleigh Featherstone recording me this go round, she looked at me at one point and said, 'Were you singing these songs in front of old dudes? Like, your husband?' Yes, I was, I told her. We both shook our heads and laughed at the hubris on 22-year-old Lydia Loveless.” - Lydia Loveless

Gregory T.S. Walker’s Minstrels & Minimoogs was self-published by a young, nomadic composer and virtuoso in 1988 to accompany an immersive multimedia performance at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Fiske Planetarium. Created with this outer, and other, world setting in mind, the four tracks find Walker stretching toward an ancient-to-future vision where Egyptian myths and Hieronymus Bosch-ian tableaus are rendered in a screaming three dimensional circuitry of electronic drums, synth guitars, and, of course, Minimoog. Given the musical terrains and outmoded topics traversed, and that this entirely DIY effort was originally released as a micro one-sided 12” edition, Minstrels & Minimoogs is as perplexing and euphoric a document lost-to-time as it is now found.

Born in 1961 into an intensely musical family spanning four generations, Gregory’s mother Helen Walker-Hill was a noted musicologist specializing in the rediscovery and work of historical Black female composers, while his father, George Walker, was the first African American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for music. Both parents studied with the famed (and famously strict) Nadia Boulanger in Paris in the 1950s, and held to lofty aesthetic standards in their home life. Walker began studying the violin as a child, but when a burgeoning interest in the electric guitar and rock music as a teen manifested, it was largely verboten in the household. The rule was that the music played in the home was to be acoustic and classical. Although the elder Walkers eventually relented and allowed Gregory’s guitar to be plugged in for a brief interval on the weekends, the remaining days he settled for strumming it sans amplification.

Gregory, conditioned and eager for a life in music but looking to get out from under the influence and yoke of his famous composer father, ultimately chose to study computer music at the University of California at San Diego, where he earned a Master of Arts. This was followed by another MA in electronic music composition at that hotbed of West Coast experimental music, Mills College. Intermedia and multimedia in the arts was the rage in the 1980s, and Mills was one of the centers for it; audacious spectacle meeting visionary performance, such as one of the realizations for Anthony Braxton’s music for multiple orchestras a young Gregory performed in with his violin.

After a series of solo synthesizer concerts around California, Gregory followed a girlfriend on a mid-country move to Boulder, Colorado. After picking up yet another composition degree at University of Colorado Boulder, his life as a composer really started, writing a piece for extended technique for guitar, a passacaglia for vocoder and orchestra, as well as Minstrels & Minimoogs.

Envisioned as a multimedia performance such as the kind he’d experienced at Mills (which was all but unknown in Boulder at the time), Gregory roped in a number of college going or aged friends of varying skill levels and musical sympathies to accompany him with distorted sax or oblique spoken interludes. Confronted with a lack of finances, but driven to get his ideas captured in a complete musical package, the album was recorded in his brother’s apartment. If not every player assembled was on Gregory’s virtuosic level, so be it; it was more about capturing the spirit of his intentions and embracing the serendipity of mistakes.

An inspired attempt at world building, Minstrels & Minimoogs draws on the deep well of musical knowledge Gregory gathered from his parents and teachers, but all the while subverting that historical basis by incorporating mutant strains of prog and pop music. The work accumulated is not unlike the playful 1980s work of Gregorio Paniagua, where medieval estampies and rondeaus are wrenched into an anachronistic present where Hildegard Von Bingen and Kate Bush are contemporaries. Ars nova, new art, a 20th century minimalist jester and troubadour.

Walker’s cosmic-futuristic forays into oblique pop and baroque subversion could forever reside perfectly in both the domed simulacrum of our universe for which it was composed, in the formats it is being reintoduced now, and our own biblical firmament. Buried beneath 50 solid inches of annual snow, Minneapolis made a Sound quite different than what the pop world foresaw. It issued forth as a slick, black, technologically advanced fusion, poised to storm the charts. Never known for sizable African-American populations, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in fact harbored a tight-knit community of musicians working feverishly through the late '70s and early '80s toward a radical manipulation of American dance music, coating futuristic funk with the glamorous sheen of guitar rock. Synthetic ebony and ivory met electricity, with sexed-up results sent shockingly across the pop heavens like violet lightning.

Their European tours of 1969 are some of the only existing recordings of the group; the first legitimately released audio recordings by this stellar lineup. Bootleg 2: Live In Europe 1969 captures the short-lived quintet in three separate concert settings across 4 LPs, containing selections from two nights at Festival Mondial Du Jazz D'Antibes in France and one night in Stockholm, Sweden. Special recordings include a pre-studio recording version of “Bitches Brew” which would be recorded in the studio for the infamous record by the same name a few months later. The audio sources of Live In Europe 1969 have been remastered from the highest quality masters available, secured from the European broadcast centres where the material was originally documented.

It quickly became a uniquely Zambian movement, befitting of its name. WITCH, Paul Ngozi and Amanaz sound nothing like other rock music from the African continent or elsewhere.

The visionary Bill Graham had booked Miles on a bill with The Grateful Dead at the Fillmore West and with fellow Columbia artist Laura Nyro in June 1970. The latter recordings are the earliest documented live performances of Miles’s band when he hired the keyboardists Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett, along with saxophonist Steve Grossman who had replaced Wayne Shorter. The rest of the rhythm section - bassist Dave Holland, drummer Jack De- Johnette and percussionist Airto Moreira - were the backbone of his band throughout this explosive period.

Curated by Carlos Santana, this set features fascinating firsthand accounts and profound insight into a seismic shift in American society, music, and culture. Die färöische Folk-Singer/Songwriterin EIVOR bringt mit ,Slor" bereits ihr zweites Studioalbum innerhalb eines Jahres raus. ,Slor" ist eine Sammlung neu komponierter Songs, die EIVOR in ihrer Muttersprache - färöisch - eingesungen hat. Das Album ist der Nachfolger des englischsprachigen Albums ,Bridges". Und auch wenn es sich um zwei unterschiedliche Alben in unterschiedlichen Sprachen handelt, gibt es eine Verbindung der beiden Platten. Wo ,Bridges" leicht und vor allem sehnsüchtig war, klingt ,Slor" eher rau und reflektierter. ,Bridges" wurde von Freundschaft, Liebe und Heimweh inspiriert. Es thematisiert die Brücken zwischen uns, Beziehungen zwischen Menschen, Plätzen und auch Dingen, die uns berühren. ,Slor" hingegen gibt sich der Fernsucht hin, thematisiert Trennungen und die Suche nach Frieden. Ein Schleier kann ein Symbol für eine Grenze zwischen Gegenwart und Vergangenheit sein, doch ein Brautschleier hingegen repräsentiert vor allem Glück und Hingabe. EIVOR selbst erklärt den Prozess der Geschwisteralben: ,Als ich die Songs geschrieben haben, erfolgte das Songwriting erst auf Englisch und direkt danach kam es auf Färöisch in meinen Kopf - wie eine Art Spiegelbild." The first single from this album was “The Change”, released earlier in the year ahead of the massive new song “Everyday”. The album is coming 26th July on CD and will be followed up with a vinyl release (of selected tracks) 23rd August.
Cornell is from Berkeley, California and raised in San Francisco where his debut album “Vindicated Soul” was released in 2017. Since then he has taken the soul scene by storm through further prolific albums “One Love”, “Absolutely” and “Next Life”. Earlier in his career he recorded with The Isley Brothers and performed on stage with James Brown. Cornell performs songs from the album for the first time at The Sussex Soul Weekender Friday 2nd August.

In a sonic departure from the symphonic folk of his critically lauded 2019 LP Omoiyari - a career-defining body of work born from his intensive meditation on the mass incarceration of Japanese-Americans during World War II - the Seattle-born singer/songwriter/producer's fifth studio album encompasses everything from Brazilian jazz and '70s funk to orchestral rock and city pop (a Japanese genre that peaked in the mid-'80s). Informed by an equally kaleidoscopic mix of inspirations - the cult-classic sci-fi novel series Hyperion Cantos, the writings of 18th century enlightenment philosopher Immanuel Kant, a revelatory trip to ancient ruins on the island of Crete - Kantos ultimately serves as an unbridled exaltation of the human spirit and all its wild complexities. During the earliest stages of creating songs for the album, Ishibashi's main intent was to return to his highly eclectic musical roots, in part by tapping into his jazz background and by delving into the dance-rock-leaning sensibilities he previously embraced as co-founder of Brooklyn-bred indie band Jupiter One. But not too long into the songwriting process, he stumbled upon an AI-equipped website capable of composing catchy song hooks based on a prompt - a turn of events that quickly catalyzed the existential inquiry at the heart of Kantos. Although his ruminations on AI, transhumanism, and humanity's troubled fate indelibly guided the making of Kantos, Ishibashi nonetheless views the album as "less of a warning about this kind of hubris but more a celebration of the very characteristics that make us human: desire, passion, empathy, and love." "If there's anything I want people to come away with when they hear this record, it's a feeling of excitement about the possibilities of human-created art," he says. "Even as we're learning more about all the amazing things AI can do, I think humans will always be one step ahead in terms of our creativity and innovation. There's still no limit to what we have to offer."

In many ways, the album serves as the tail of a creative comet that in just two years included the “classic line-up” trilogy of Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes, Under the Bushes, Under the Stars and countless singles that crammed endless hooks in their grooves. In the intervening space, Tonics And Twisted Chasers has taken on a mythic status. It’s arguably Pollard’s strangest, gnarliest, most enlightened record and also the fans first chance to see the stitches that bind his galaxy of songs. It’s like peering at the caliber inside a watch, responsible for making the whole enterprise tick. This nineteen-song collaboration with guitarist Tobin Sprout could be interpreted as spontaneous sketches, late-night improvisations, ideas that blossomed later in the timeline (“Knock ’Em Flyin’” and “Key Losers”), but as with anything in Pollard’s orbit, its intention is clear when heard as a cohesive whole. The Pollard tenet that “less is more” is on full display here. The songs rarely creep past ninety seconds and coalesce much like Pollard’s collage-styled visual art. MIKE TRAMP wurde mit White Lion, die 1983 gegründet wurden, in der Musikwelt bekannt.
