Unbound by place or genre, mercurial, experimental pop duo Soft as Snow find freedom to intuitively reflect the disarray of human connection with their intricate, shape-shifting pop production. With each successive release, the duo evolves, unfurling into their own poetic sound, now fully realized on their intimate, third full-length, Metal.wet.

The oft-present trappings of male-female duos are eschewed here as the Berlin-based Oda Starheim and Øystein Monsen contribute equally across a canvas of analogue synthesizers, samplers, live drums, and processed guitars. At once a part of and yet apart from the zeitgeist, their forward-thinking modernity stretches the limits of expectations across Metal.wet's ten insouciant tracks. Fans of Tirzah, Hype Williams, and even Angelo Badalamenti will find much to love in this haunting work peppered with ASMR moments and rough sampling wrapped in high production –– twinkling glasses and sirens in the distance, rhythms and voices up front. The result is synth-driven, noisy, and dripping with laidback, confident sensuality.

Although Starheim's voice begins the album in a whisper, it quickly becomes apparent that the group has jettisoned their previous tendency to bury and distort her vocals. Nested in a bed of thorny electronics and broken rhythms, her multifaceted vocals might bring to mind Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead or Hope Sandoval fronting Massive Attack. London MC Brother May (Mica Levi, CURL) makes an appearance on the driving and ethereal “Whip,” while Øystein’s own voice appears for the first time in a state of languid background haze.

Soft as Snow create and record across Europe. Defiantly averse to genre, the pair become vessels for their “electronic music pushed to the brink of collapse” (The Wire), previously released by Infinite Machine and Houndstooth. Informed by backgrounds in film and performance art, “there’s a surrealism that comes with watching Soft as Snow in the flesh,” (Vice) as seen at L.E.V. and Lunchmeat Festivals. Collaborations with visual artist Guynoid, designer AGF Hydra, and sculptor Camilla Steinum add depth to the corporeality of their “strange, mesmerising and utterly unforgettable” electronic experimentations. Julie Kuhl, geboren 2005 in Châtillon-sur-Seine in Frankreich, ist eine junge Singer-Songwriterin aus Frankfurt a.M, die in den vergangenen zwei Jahren von sich hören gemacht hat. Bereits als kleines Kind fing Julie an, in Chören zu singen, Instrumente zu lernen (Gitarre, Klavier, Bratsche) und erste Songs selbst zu schreiben. Im Alter von 15 Jahren folgt dann ihre erste Single und kurz darauf ihr Debütalbum „flowers & candles“. 2022 – mit 17 Jahren – erschien Julies zweites Album „Born With Nostalgic Bones“ auf dem Frankfurter Jazz-Label „Jazz Montez Records“.

Chris Douridas, Musikdirektor des kalifornischen Radiosenders KCRW zählt bereits zu ihren Fans. Nach unzähligen Auftritten in Frankfurt, teils auf großen Bühnen (wie auf der EM Eröffnungszeremonie in Frankfurt oder dem Holidays Festival), teils klein folgt nun eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kölner Musiker Gianni Brezzo (Marvin Horsch), der mit ihr gemeinsam 5 Songs im Stile von Genevieve Stokes, Arlo Parks & Clairo produziert hat.
Die IndiePop-Hymne DAMAGE drückt den Schmerz der Jugend und ihre düsteren Herausforderungen mit ihrer eigenen Perspektive aus & die kraftvolle Piano-Produktion lässt Julies klassisch ausgebildeten Gesang einfließen.
Julie: "Es geht um Jemanden, mit dem man Abschließen will und um dem Konflikt mit sich selbst, da man immer noch ganz viel Liebe für die Person hat, aber zeitgleich weiß, dass sie einem nicht gut tut. Ein präsentes Thema ist auch die Verzweiflung darüber, dass die Person keine Einsicht zeigt und sich ihrer Taten gar nicht bewusst ist.“

Die EP CLOUDS OF GRIEF erscheint 01.11.2024 auf dem „Jakarta Records“ Sublabel „ASMARA RECORDS“ (Woman & XulZolar). In Japan erscheint die EP auf P-Vine Records. Brain Marrow übernimmt die PR (inkl. Radio) in UK & Achim Launert bemustert die Radiosender im deutschsprachigen Raum. Begleitet wird das Release von einer Digitalen Marketingkampagne (Konversion) auf Instagram.

Reissue! Ein exklusives Album zur damaligen (2019) Feier des 15-jährigen Bestehens des CMR-Labels, das von Chinese Man, Baja Frequencia und der Scratch Bandits Crew zusammengestellt wurde! Darting wildly between dark/light, pain/bliss and sacred/profane, the band originating from Bristol offers a different perspective on Post Metal! On Grand Scheme Of Things, Sugar Horse comment: "This album was intended to be a sideways step. A move away from the kind of thing that is expected of us_ if anything is at all. What I mean by that, is the songs are more direct. They take a much shorter amount of time to "get to the point". We also wanted to make this one noticeably "less Metal". While we love being a bit boneheaded and confrontational, we definitely wanted to explore the more melodic, song-based side of the band's sound. Normally you'd see shortened song structures and more singing and think "Oh these guys are going for gold_.they wanna get on the radio and make millions of bloodstained pounds." Well_you're very much entitled to think that if you wish, but it felt like more of a songwriting challenge than anything else to be honest. We've done the whole drawn out, endless Space Rock thing a good few times now and it would've been easy to rest on those laurels. Do something we're comfortable with. Alas, that is not really the point of this band. We'd much prefer to make it difficult and take the long route."

Katya Shirskova - David Maranha - Le Héron / A Reuniåo

Stellagedelivers a compelling split LP fromKatya ShirshkovaandDavid Maranha, "Le Héron / A Reuniåo," set for release in July 2024. Created and produced in residence at La Box contemporary art gallery at ENSA - École national supérieure d'arts de Bourges in 2023, this album is a profound exploration of the two artists' respective voices, showcasing their distinctive approaches.

Katya Shirshkovaopens the LP with side-long "Le Héron." This piece is an unadulterated exploration of voice, devoid of any field recordings or added effects. Embracing minimalism, the work revolves solely around vocal loops and re-recordings, creating choral structures that evoke folk traditions while delving into experimental realms. The ASMR-like techniques employed serve not merely as an auditory gimmick but as an intricate tool to illustrate the delicate flight of birds, mirroring the ethereal quality of the entire composition.

"Le Heron" aptly draws inspiration from its avian namesake, weaving birds into its fabric through the concept of vertical polyphony. The piece is underpinned by a profound understanding of this polyphonic approach, demanding meticulous precision in its looping technique. Each fragile construction is crafted in a single, unbroken take, showcasing an impeccable blend of simplicity and complexity.

David Maranhatakes over on the flip side with "A Reuniåo," delivering seven suites of powerful, minimalist drone compositions. Maranha's mastery of sustained tones and evolving harmonics creates a mesmerizing, meditative experience that is both intense and transformative.A dynamic interplay of harmonics creates a dense, immersive auditory environment, a study in sustained tones and subtle variation, leaving a lasting impression.

Asmaa Hamzaoui stands out as a pioneering female figure in the traditionally male-dominated realm of Gnawa music. With her group, Bnat Timbouktou, she brings a dynamic and spiritual dimension to the genre, infusing it with the vibrant energy of desert blues. Despite the essential role women have played in Gnawa rituals, female musicians have historically been underrepresented. Hamzaoui, however, is at the forefront of changing this trend. Born into a family deeply entrenched in Gnawa traditions in Casablanca, Hamzaoui was immersed in this musical heritage from a young age. Her father, a master musician, and her mother, a dancer, provided a rich environment for her early education in music. She learned to play the guembri, a three-stringed lute central to Gnawa music, and began performing with her father's band on the qraqeb, metal castanets used in Gnawa music, and in the choir. Encouraged by her father, she eventually formed her own group, Bnat Timbouktou. The group's debut album, "Oulad Lghaba," recorded in collaboration with the Swedish label ajabu! Records, was critically acclaimed and nominated for a Songlines Music Award. This album, along with their upcoming release "L'bnat," showcases Hamzaoui's commitment to preserving and revitalizing Gnawa music. "L'bnat," will emphasize the female traditions and spiritual aspects of Gnawa culture. Hamzaoui's performances are characterized by her powerful voice and the rhythmic, percussive playing of the guembri. Her music not only pays homage to the spiritual and healing qualities of Gnawa but also aims to keep the tradition alive by introducing it to new audiences worldwide.

On The Sport of Love, seasoned collaborators Asma Maroof, Patrick Belaga and Tapiwa Svosve consider the language, competition and contradiction of modern romance: its yearning, incomprehensible vastness and the inevitable darkness and fleeting fragility. For the trio, love is the emotion that propels all of us whether we acknowledge it or not, and its expression can be realized in many forms.

The drone-pop consternations of Ekin Fil emerge through vaporous tone and forlorn, distant song, as if plucked from a dream. These exist on their own accord, moving with their own internal logic of an emotion heaviness that belies any the passing observation of this as mere shoegazing ambience. Her songs, her compositions find themselves adjacent the fragmented etherealization of Elisabeth Fraser's voice from a forgotten scene of a particular David Lynch film, as a ASMR trigger for Proustian recollection. Something profound. Something hidden. Something desolately sad.

The Helen Scarsdale Agency has had the pleasure of witnessing Ekin's continued development, maturation, and growth as a composer, having released now seven of her magnificent, under-the-radar gems. Her slow burning, dejected ballads continue to draw from the deep well of sorrow, with varying frequencies and intensities of bitter light poking through. Loves lost. A world broken. All is not hopeless, but there is a considerable amount of shit to wade through.

Sleepwalkers embraces a familiar set of metaphors in her work, that of narcolepsy and the unsettled state of existence between sleep and being awake. But she stretches herself with a set of compositions that run parallel to the work of Tim Hecker as in the gravitation soft-noise of "Stone Cold" or to a slow motion serialism that punctuates the ambient crawl of her ambitious "Gone Gone." Recommended for fans of Grouper, Rafael Anton Irisarri, A.C. Marias, and Carla dal Forno.

A Paris resident of Minsk origin, Lina Filipovich’s ‘Music for an imaginary dancefloor’ explores the liminal space between club music and something altogether weirder, elusive, and abstract. Nervous, varied and amplified by various delays, the LP was written from improvisations on analogue synthesizers between June and December in 2022.

Atonal drones and atmospheric textures convey imagery of charcoal skies and silk tapestries; an idealised parallel world untethered from reality and bodies, towards something more ethereal – floating freely in red carpet lined corridors.

“In my previous works, I used pre-existing sounds to create new pieces. I was interested in the appropriation and decontextualization of materials from various traditions and contexts. However, in this album, I don't deconstruct; instead, I attempt to co-write with the machines, relying on their aesthetics and my imagination.”

Lina's LP trickles down the spine, pulse-raising and gooseflesh on tender skin, analogous to the aftermath of a sweaty fever dream. Speaking the language of spirits in the allure of the dark.

Sweet pumpin minimal tunes, groovy !

2024 heißt es 20 JAHRE CHINESE MAN (RECORDS)! Das aus Südfrankreich stammende Trio Chinese Man (bestehend aus High Ku, Matteo & Sly) tritt seit seiner ersten VÖ unabhängig unter der Fahne des eigenen Label Chinese Man Records auf. Gegründet 2004, beziehen sie ihre Einflüsse vor allem aus dem Hip-Hop, Trip-Hop, aber auch aus Dub, Electro und Reggae. Mit über 600 Shows weltweit im Rücken, kehrt die Band 2024 für ihrem dritten richtigem Album zurück, eund einer explosiven Live-Show. Dieses neue Album wurde in den Studios des Labels in Marseille sowie in Paris, im Studio Zarma und im berühmten Studio Ferber in Paris aufgenommen, insbesondere mit dem Orchester "L'Ensemble Hors Champ". Die Leitung des Orchesters wurde Gilles Alonzo anvertraut, einem der Gruppe nahestehenden Musiker, der die Orchesterparts für sechs der 13 Titel des Albums mitkomponiert und arrangiert hat. Zu den Gästen des Albums gehören z.B. General Elektriks, KT Gorique, Stylo G, Isadora, Youthstar & Miscellaneous, FP & Green T (ASM) und Stogie T. Die Gruppe hat außerdem Ferdinand Lemoine für Bläserarrangements eingeladen. Lemoine hat bereits mit dem Funk-Produzenten Dabeull und der Pianistin Sofiane Pamart zusammengearbeitet. Wie schon bei ihrem ersten Album vor zehn Jahren hat die Gruppe beschlossen, Sodi (Studio Zarma) für die Koproduktion und den Mix des neuen Albums sowie Antoine Chabert (Studio Chab) für das Mastering zu engagieren. “ Dafuniks is bringing back their brand of cool hip-hop, soul and groove””

The latest in a prolific string of solo and collaborative releases by James Rushford, Turzets collects a pair of new works primarily created and recorded last year while the Australian composer-performer was in residence at La Becque, an art center on Lake Geneva in Switzerland. The side-length piece "Fallaway Whisk" explores hesitation in its many forms_reticence of speech, sonic restraint_using live, abstracted translations of text from English to German against a lush and swelling soundscape. On the flip side, "Quire" is a work in ten movements influenced by the composer's study of late medieval repertoire on portative organ, weaving the instrument's woodsy interlocking melodies with angelic Yamaha CS-80 synth sweeps and stuttering glitches. The combined effort is somewhat a departure for Rushford, working in traces of Klaus Schulze, concrete poetry, and ars subtilior into a precise and ever-unfolding tapestry. Rushford's work draws from a wide range of collagist and improvisatory musical languages, staking out an idiosyncratic stylistic space that has been variously described as "electro-acoustic experimentation with a beating heart" (Boomkat) and "haunted Jacobean ASMR" (The Wire). Investigating the creases, cracks, and folds in traditions ranging from early music to New Age, Rushford's work subtly exaggerates seemingly liminal aspects such as atmosphere and the bodily presence of the performer until these take on a weight equal to musical elements such as pitch, rhythm, and timbre. In recent years, Rushford's solo work has been guided by his theorization of sonic images, particularly the shadow, which has inspired pieces as diverse as an hour-long companion to Federico Mompou's 1959-67 piano cycle Música Callada (2016) and a sumptuous translation of the play of light across flat surfaces into synthetic sound (The Lake from the Louvers, Shelter Press, 2021). His long-standing performance practice for piano, portative organ, synthesizers, and electroacoustic devices, is constantly infused with a delicacy of touch and a harmonic sensibility in which unorthodox tunings coexist with influences from fin de siècle Impressionism, the twentieth century avant-garde, and popular musical structures. He has worked with a vast range artists including Klaus Lang, Annea Lockwood, David Behrman, Tashi Wada, Haroon Mirza, Dennis Cooper, Ora Clementi, crys cole, Oren Ambarchi, Kassel Jaeger, Will Guthrie, and Graham Lambkin. He has performed as Golden Fur (with Sam Dunscombe and Judith Hamann) and Food Court (with Joe Talia and Francis Plagne).

"The organ dates back to 1790 and was made by Venanzo Fedeli, who came from a prestigious family of organ builders. This particular organ is tuned in the ancient way at 430 Hz. Tuning relies on pure thirds that aim to create dissonances within the instrument itself.

Since the organ is an instrument modeled according to the principles of nature, the intonation of the pipes was performed according to an incompletely equal system that reflects the natural intonation based on mathematical ratios.

This produces a purer sound for the thirds but slightly harsher and more difficult to listen to. The hardness of the intervals of the organ is a metaphor for the hostile climate that prevails in the Potenza valley during winter and autumn.

The sound of the organ with the register of the flute returns a particularly sweet and penetrating sound but, at the same time, a very complex timbre with intricate harmonic texture, given the numerous fluctuations and beats. The warm tones of the organ reflect the good and welcoming sould of the people who inhabit these lands. The absence of dynamics inside the instrument allows the listener to focus and understand the harmonic texture and timbral differences between the various notes more clearly.

Trombone and trumpet played by Matteo Paggi on track 2 and 3 were recorded during a hot summer day at Elefante Bianco Studio in Rome by Matteo Scarchilli. Sax, effects and noises in track 6 played by Giulio De Asmundis and Pietro Rianna were recorded in Fauna53 studio.

‘Gentle Confrontation’, Loraine James's third Hyperdub album, opens a new chapter of her real and sonic life in which she examines her past and present. It's a positively languid, enjoyably disjointed set made while listening to her teenage favourites; math rock and emo-electronic such as DNTEL, Lusine and Telefon Tel Aviv. The album also features an ever more diverse set of peers, placing them in her unusual musical settings and drawing out sensitive and reflexive performances. At other times the album stretches out into a drifting ambience as if seeking a sense of bliss in the everyday. ‘Gentle Confrontation’ is about relationships (especially familial), understanding, and giving back a little grace and care, while the tone of the record criss-crosses watery ambience with denatured rhythm and asmr beats. These 16 tracks are Loraine's best work yet, and a personal and musical leap forward, delivering a totally unique vision of electronic pop music.
