C.K. Mann made his name as a virtuous guitar player in Ghana when he played with Moses Kweku Oppong in the Kakaikus Guitar Band in the early 60s. He then became the leader of the band Ocean's Strings until 1966. In 1968, he enjoyed a hit with the single 'Edina Benya'.
Mann was known for blending authentic African music with European influences. He was inspired by Latin American music and created a style all of his own. He became known as the 'King of Highlife' in Ghana in the 70's, when he released the record 'Nimpa Rebre' featuring vocals from Pat Thomas and Kofi Yankwon.
Funky Highlife came out of the Essiebons label run by Dick Essilfe Bondzie. According to Dick, this album could have been a massive hit in Ghana but the vinyl factories ran out of stock because of Ghana's economic downturn, so the demand for the record could not be met. The album is a fusion of highlife and soul. The best-known track 'Asafo beesuon' is a multi-layered, drum heavy, funk medley and is over 13 minutes long.

Niney the Observer is well known for his great productions,collaborations,with the likes of Dennis Brown and for some of the best rhythms to come out of Jamaica.Maybe less known is that he began in the music business as a singer.Here for the first time is a collection of songs culled from his career that feature the outstanding voice of the Observer himself.
*Niney the Observer (b.Winston Holness,1951,Montego Bay,Jamaica) grew up in Montego Bay, Jamaica and began singing in school bands in and around the area and the nearby town of Lucea,where one of the bands he sang with,featured future Studio One guitarist Eric Frater.Two other singers that Niney grew up with were Derrick Morgan and Eric 'Monty' Morris. The Derrick Morgan connection brought Niney to the attention of Beverly's Records to whom he sold some of his songs.Producer Coxonne Dodd of Studio One began noticing Niney's talents and offered him some studio time and a base to work out of on Charles Street in Kingston Town. The year was 1957 and Coxonne Dodd released some of these early recordings featuring the vocal talents of Niney on his Studio One label .If Niney The Observers work as a singer was ever in doubt or overshadowed by his many other talents,then we hope that this album will put that to rest.Niney behind the microphone as compared to a mixing desk is a great,great,thing.....

Mr. K Alexi Shelby
Like a moth drawn to a flame, there is something utterly infectious about the music of Mr.K Alexi Shelby, better known as K-Alexi one of the founding fathers of house music direct from his home city of Chicago. Since the late 1980s, he has pioneered the true house sound, leading to a DH and production career spanning over 20 years, including collaborations with artists ranging from The Pet Shop Boys to Derrick May and from Larry Heard and Felix da Housecat to Will Smith, as well as gigs across the globe.
An impressionable young teenager, Mr.K Alexi Shelby developed friendships with Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy whilst attending seminal venues like The Warehouse and The Music Box in the mid 1980s. Being here at this embryonic stage of dance music culture, there were no rules or precedents, so K Alexi drew on a rich musical heritage that had seen him grow up in the 70s and 80s listening to Stevie Wonder, Prince, Curtis Mayfield and David Huff. Those roots continue to influence his music to this day.
It was under the moniker Risque III that Essence Of A Dream was released in 1987, firmly establishing the name of Mr.K Alexi Shelby amongst the most prominent of all house producers at the time. Moreover, those early tracks are still recognized to be the quintessential Chicago house sound. The rumbling and dark bass, smooth strings, incredible percussion and the spoken word poetic and erotic lyrical flow became the trademark for classic Chicago house and the template for everything else that followed. To reiterate, there was no template before this. This was the beginning.
This initial success has lead to Mr.K Alexi Shelby working with the leading names across the electronic music world and beyond. Collaborations and remixes for Chicago peers like Mike Dunn, Mr. Lee and Marshall Jefferson merely served as the springboard for Alexi to work with the best in the electronic scene, from Derrick May to Paul Johnson ,Ron Trent Dave Angel to Felix ad House Kat. Furthermore, his talents have also lead to him working with The Pet Shop Boys and Will Smith.
On top of this, his tracks have appeared on compilations by artists varying from Laurent Garnier to DJ Hell, who used It's Me 2010 contribution to the Body Language series for Get Physical Music. Produced under the Club M.C.M. moniker, the 1991 EP It's Me/Club M.C.M. has been a frequent selection for compilations for 20 years and is rightly regarded as a true underground techno classic.

The Cryovac machine is maintained and operated by A. Garcia. The components that make this machine function are the artists that push their creations forward to seal off their own vision of the now. What is preserved is the character of a craft that follows its own path. Cryovac believes sound vibration released from vinyl has the proper disposition to express the true nature of the Cryovac approach, and only selects the best vinyl when manufacturing and inspecting its' product. The Cryovac machine's purpose is to keep an independent view of the Detroit sound.
Jason Garcia is an international D.J., producer, and house music aficionado. His production runs the gambit of genres with a knack for injecting his smooth character into each work. For this effort Garcia has chosen to represent himself with a house style that is truly pimp heroic. Jason Garcia will forever have people in the Detroit underground.

Shadow Ray is best known in house music circles as the co-producer of the Oasis 1, 13, 13 1/2 and 14 releases with Omar S, although he is also well known to the Ryan Correctional Facility for more nefarious reasons. The Detroit-based producer has spent the past four years at Ryan earning not only a hard knocked life but a trade in Sound Engineering. That was until Alex Smith (aka Omar S) made a presentation to the facility s parole board to commission a remix of his recent hit >Heres Your Trance Now Dance< as part of Rays work release program! Rumour has it the parole board was inhabited by at least one old school house head, and we re delighted to see Alexs idea come to fruition, with Shadow Ray really nailing it with this remix. Staying true to original s shimmering melody, Ray opts to bolster the bottom end with a raw bassline that creates a nice, fat rolling groove

Russian newcomer Kirill delivers the breathtaking house cut Feel The Broken Line. Last but not least Sellouts does what he does best: slow-mo-spaced-out-disco in She Knows. Tip!

Tough and subtle are the best words to describe Haruki's sound, you'll find his one-of-a-kind characteristics. High up in the skies, amongst the clouds, Rocket Juice & The Moon was born. Literally. It happened back in 2008, when Damon Albarn, Flea and Tony Allen convened on the same Lagos flight, to play and exchange musical ideas in that city as part of the Africa Express collective. Relishing a shared enthusiasm for one another's work, and bonding immediately, there and then the triumvirate laid down the blueprint for Rocket Juice.
Still, more than a year passed before conditions were set for three weeks together at Albarn's West London studio, recording and refining two-dozen startlingly out and deeply funky instrumental grooves. The next stage was to invite onboard some extremely talented friends, with further sessions in Dallas, New York, Chicago and Paris... Erykah Badu, no less, queen of contemporary soul. Three companions from Africa Express: Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara, whose debut album has topped World Music charts since its release last Autumn; her multi-talented compatriot Cheick Tidiane Seck, whose prodigious keyboardism has lit up releases by artists ranging from Youssou N'Dour to Hank Jones; the young, Ghanaian rapper M.anifest, quizzically existential, switching seamlessly between Twi and English. And the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, long-time stalwarts in the Honest Jon's set-up — since one of the team discovered them busking near the shop in Portobello Road, on his lunchbreak — with a second album for the label due in May... Finally, the tracks were dispatched for mixing to Berlin, to be meticulously honed, polished and envenomed by Mark Ernestus, one half of the legendary Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound partnerships.
The result is Rocket Juice & The Moon — out March 26, 2012, on Honest Jon's Records — a triumphant exploration and proliferation of kinetic Afro-funk rhythms: organic, exuberant, communal music-making, evidenced by the project's live debut on stage as part of the Honest Jon's Chop Up in late 2011, which hit London, Marseille, Dublin, and Cork to such great acclaim (witness the flurry of smart-phone film-clips uploaded in the days thereafter).
From the inaugural bars — that absurdly funky slice of instructional timekeeping, 1-2-3-4-5-6 — the liquid pulse of Fela Kuti's classic recordings drives the action through a suite of 18 shape-shifting compositions. The greatest drummer in the world has never sounded so good as he does here. His intricate cross-patterns jostle and lock with Flea's nimble, rumbling bass riffs. Joined by Seck on There and Extinguished — 'when you dispose of something burning, be sure it's out' — Albarn's keyboards spray synth fusillades up top, over, and under... splicing into the mess of wires running between the freaked Afro-disco of William Onyeabor and the space-jazz-moog of Sun Ra. The HBE brings extra intensity and drama to Leave-Taking — likewise Flea's trumpet to Rotary Connection — teasing out the haunting melody coiled in the mix.
Where the best of vintage Afrobeat sides sustained their concentrated energies over the course of sprawling, marathon jams, RJ & TM manages something altogether different: the group bottles the idiom into capsules of funk... and real songs. Beautifully buoyed by Erykah Badu's unmistakable vocals, Hey, Shooter brilliantly traverses metaphysical spaceways sans any semblance of noodling. Lolo and Follow-Fashion — featuring the open-hearted sensuality of Diawara's singing, M.anifest's quick, brawny science, and more brass blasts — play like its musical cousins or codas. Indeed, the album's shrewd sequencing creates the composite effect of tracks working both individually or within the context of an extended song-cycle.
The lovely ballad, Poison, is bittersweet and ruminative: 'If you're looking for love, beware the signs / They will paralyze you one by one / Poison, it will only break your heart.' Down-tempo and dubby, Check Out and Worries amplify the range of styles and moods. And by the time of Fatherless — a chugging Afro blues that evokes John Lee Hooker lost in Lagos, one gets the sneaking suspicion there's very little outside the reach of this collective's inventive musical grasp.
There is, in fact, a palpable openness pervading Rocket Juice & The Moon — the sense of a limber willingness to follow creative impulse — right down to how the group acquired its name. When Ogunajo Ademola — the Lagotian commissioned to do the album's cover artwork — dubbed his submission 'Rocket Juice & The Moon', it quickly morphed into the formal name of the project, like trying to hold onto mercury.
Surely, the stars above also approved.

Here we have a new label and it's some of the best Techy Drum and Bass we've heard for a while. Counterstrike and Cooh do what they do best and bring their trademark tight production along with a load of bass that'll rumble any bass bin. Rush Hour presents a new series of releases entitled 'Voyage Direct', all about feel good club music. Dexter kicks off this series in a classy style with his Junofest EP. This is easily his best work since his genre breaking electrofunk hit 'I Don't Care from 2000. The title track is a steady, yet smooth club groove with enough wsing to make anyone dance to the music. Best known for their ska, grime and indie blend, Man Like Me's brazen lyrics are less self-conscious than their musical counterparts and revel in the realities, perks and calamities of being a young Londoner. They reflect the melting pot that is the London scene, combining genres and entering into creative collaborations, cementing their reputations as one of the most exciting bands in the UK. The tracks on this EP have been produced by Clanger and Charlie Andrews (Madness, Micachu), and Charlie Hugall (Florence and the Machine, Crystal Fighters). you secretly believe that all of the best dance music has an undercurrent of melancholy then you are in for a treat. 0.5, the debut EP from the Fascination Movement, doesn't skimp on either the dancefloor rhythms or the windswept yes-we-remember-New Pop romanticism. The Fascination Movement is looking forwards, not backwards: just because this is music that adapts the same vocabulary created by bands like New Order or early Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark doesn't change the fact that from the first arpeggios of "Just Pretend" you feel the shock of the new. Of course, you may be too busy humming along to the choruses to notice how slyly the band makes a classic sound fresh again...

The Berlin based Alexander Kowalski is responsible for projects like DisX 3 (Tresor, Konsequent), Mr. Discoteque (BCC), as Double X together with Stassy (Sender Berlin) and last but not least under his real name Alexander Kowalski exclusive for Kanzleramt. After his debut 12inch for Kanzleramt titled "Live" featured two unchanged live recordings, Alex released his second 12inch "Dark Soul" in 2000 which includes the first solo-studio-recordings for Kanzleramt. This 12" gives you a taste for Alexander Kowalski's follow up LP "Echoes". The acutely harmonic tracks on "Dark Soul" are a tribute to the dark side of Alexander Kowalski and may belong to one of the best productions without a doubt in 2000. Alexander released his really successful long-player "Response" in 2003 and his 12inch release "Alexander Kowalski With Funk D'Void And Joris Voorn" on Kanzleramt at last.

"Agitators Of Hysteria" ist ArsGoatias zweites Album. Australia-based musician Mark Gomes presents the debut full length under his own name for Soda Gong. “Alphane Moods” finds Gomes employing strategies that will be familiar to listeners of his work as Blue Chemise – elegiac, loop-based modes of composition and a predilection for concise etude forms – that manifest here with a strikingly different scope and intent, shifting from expressive abstraction into more conceptual terrain. Over the course of fourteen widescreen tracks, he navigates the gap between nostalgic and futurist sensibilities, concocting elusive, romantic, and sanguine settings that feel both plucked from the past and beamed in from a time still to come. Gomes describes his approach on the record as a “practice of ‘constructed ambience’, deploying sounds and track titles with pop-psychological associations of escape.” The result is a vivid, cinematic album that splits the difference between the worldbuilding retrofuturism of the best vaporwave music and the shadowy, homespun tape vignettes for which Gomes has become well known.

Kaspi & Stride is a new project from Justin Tripp, best known as one half of the Georgia equation. Leanings has its origins in rigorous yet laid back studio sessions, dual personal practice sensibilities that seem to get at Tripp’s creative ethos as well as any descriptors might. The material here was born out of collaborative studio sessions with multi-instrumentalist Jimy Seitang (Conga Square/Stygian Stride) - the “Stride” of K&S. The music from these sessions has been reworked and recontextualized by Tripp to form the eight tracks found on the record. These compositions are heady and diverse, anchored by infectious drum patterns and intricate electronics, capably occupying a somewhat hard to define space between “club ready” and “home listening.”

“Vishing” throbs with a wide-eyed intensity, infused with the type of deceptively rudimentary synth stabs and bass swells that wouldn’t be out of place on an early Hype Williams record. With contributions from Mary Lattimore and Jon Leland, “Kaptoxa” charts a more ethereal, if no less dizzying, course. Indeed, this is an album that navigates dense, tactile passages and airy, celestial planes with aplomb, making a case for Tripp’s prowess as both composer and arranger with equal priority. The most important thing is to keep moving.
