'In collaboration with the children of Nico Kasanda, better known as Docteur Nico, Planet Ilunga proudly presents an anthology dedicated to African Fiesta Sukisa, available as a 3LP set and a digital release with bonus songs. This release is the result of many years of preparations and was realized in close partnership with Liliane Kasanda, Nico’s eldest daughter. Marking forty years since his passing, we felt that the year 2025 was the right time to honor Docteur Nico’s legacy with this original collection.
'Almost all of the African Fiesta Sukisa songs were released on Nico’s Sukisa label which translates in Lingala for “the final accomplishment”. The music on Sukisa, crafted by Nico and legendary vocalists such as Chantal, Sangana, Apôtre, Mizele, Lessa Lassan and Josky, embodies the essence of that powerful phrase with genius, class and depth. The label ran between 1966 and 1975 and released approximately 280 songs. Ngoma also issued the group between 1967 and 1971 and, in addition, reissued material from the Sukisa label. Many of these songs have become part of the collective memory of Congolese society and are still heard, discussed, and analyzed daily across digital platforms worldwide, as well as on numerous Congolese radio and TV stations.
'The album we put together features some of Nico’s signature songs alongside never before reissued tracks from the Sukisa catalog. It furthermore contains a large booklet with song commentary, testimonial interviews from well-known musicians, journalists, fans and Nico’s entourage, besides never before published photography about his personal and musical life.
'Alastair Johnston, author of the book ‘A Discography of Docteur Nico’ and longstanding Planet Ilunga collaborator, designed a stylish booklet and cover using all our collected material. Audifax Bemba, longtime admirer, compiler and connoisseur of Nico’s music, and the author of most of the song commentary in our accompanying booklet, offers his portrait of Docteur Nico:

With his band African Fiesta Sukisa, Docteur Nico displays his wide palette of unusual sounds. While exploring the Hawaiian guitar with its clear, airy, plangent, psychedelic effluvia, he continues to replicate the piano comping technique, and adds two missing strings to his bow: a simulation of the sanza (likembé or thumb piano), whose sounds he reproduces right down to the noisemakers of the tiny tin rings, on the one hand, and the sounds of the Luba balafon on the other. The right note, in the right place, at the right time, is the triptych on which Nico Kasanda’s playing is based, a note dressed in the perfect sound. A guitar of pure emotion. With African Fiesta Sukisa, his playing takes a ‘Chopin-esque’ turn, sending out more notes in a sublime adagio. The true artist is the one who simplifies everything. The complete recordings of the legendary Marc And The Mambas run of three live performances given at The Duke Of York's Theatre in London's West End in 1983. Restored from the original VHS tape recordings made by the late Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson (Throbbing Gristle, Coil), these remain the only recordings that exist of Marc And The Mambas performing live. Originally released in 2012 on Marc Almond's (Soft Cell) own Strike Force Entertainment label as a CD/DVD set (long sold out), this edition, presented on vinyl for the first time, contains the 17 tracks from the SFE CD release, expanded to include the two bonus DVD-only tracks: 'Près Des Ramparts De Séville' and 'Jacky'. Completely remastered for vinyl by Martin Bowes (The Cage Studios). A combination of the chanson and torch songs which he still sings today, over piano, strings and woodwind-accompanied compositions. "It's quite a spectacle, especially when Almond hits his sweet spot of sinister lyrics, declared pompously over a droned string arrangement... Early signs of the full-on showtune and classical rearrangements that make up Almond's current albums are evident"(Record Collector). Presented on heavyweight double vinyl in a deluxe glossy gatefold sleeve featuring the extensive reminiscence by Marc Almond himself from the 2012 release. Also included is a reproduction of the 16-page programme printed for the three concerts in 1983. The stunning cover painting by Val Denham is exclusive to this release.

Back again with another release for the Meeting Of The Minds series, this time with lucky number 13!

First track on this is by me & Fez The Kid, who has been regularly sending me music for years, most of which I admit to sleeping on due to the sheer volume of demos submitted to the label. But when I was able to actually check some music that he sent me, there was one tune (at the time called All Round Juggling) of his that I gave me a few ideas on how it could sound. He was thankfully up for me working on it with him & the end result is "Skin Out Crew (Magnificent Mix)", which I've been playing a lot in sets this year.

"BDC" is a track done by me & The Last Ronin (aka Stretch & Enjoy) which they had started and I was really into it because it reminded me of some of the "ruff with the smooth" ragga jungle style tracks I'd hear on labels like Slam!, Tom & Jerry, Kemet & so on. It was really fun to work on this with them & we were also able to do a 2nd collaboration, which will be coming out on the next Defender compilation on Stretch's label AKO Beatz.

Settle Down is someone that was on my list of potential collaborators for a long long time but I just kept neglecting to reach out to him about actually doing something together. I eventually got round to getting in touch with him last year for collaborating on a track for Meeting Of The Minds, so he sent me something he had started, which I added some more to & sent back to him, so that he could add the finishing touches. The end result is "Shell Of A Man", which I like because it's quite sparse & ominous, dark but not in the typical "darkside hardcore" way.

"Altitude" by me & Flex Luthor has been through quite a lot haha. He initially reached out about working on a tune together in 2021 & at the time, I was keen but already quite occupied with other artists I was collaborating with for the series, as well as contemplating ending the series on Vol. 10, due to the amount of work it takes to compile each one (which also explains why Vol. 14 is not currently ready for release yet). But around the end of 2022, he sent me a track he had done where he said that he was struggling to get any kind of bassline that he was happy with. I liked what he sent so I asked him to send the track over for me to work on, but I then sat on the track for a whole year due to other commitments before finally working on it in 2024, during a long plane ride where I had time to actually focus on it. I was able to get the track to a place we were both happy with, until it became one of the tracks of mine that got lost when my backpack was stolen a few weeks later, with my computer inside. I didn't have the backup of the project, so unfortunately, we had to master this track for release from the mp3 file of the first & only version we had of it. I think it still sounds fine though, especially as this is not the first (or only) time I've had to send mp3 files off for mastering, but yeah, what a journey this tune has had!

New week, new heat from Monsieur Van Pratt, an ever-reliable edit master who this time brings his signature style to a trio of Spanish-language cuts. He tackles two classic disco anthems that are familiar yet completely revitalised in EspaNol as 'Caliente' kicks off with stomping disco energy and catchy riffs, then 'Toca Mi Campana' is a more funky and playful number with low-slung bass. They are joined by a deeper, lesser-known gem, 'Americana ', which is reimagined into a powerful dancefloor weapon with gritty, analogue textures and a deep respect for groove that will heat up any 'floor.

Poetry and music in an annually changing Frisian-international ensemble — that’s IT DEEL, a residency project by the Kleefstra brothers. After three previous sessions and releases with Jacaszek, Eivind Lønning & Espen Reinertsen, and Karen Willems, this beautiful project finds its conclusion with a fourth collaboration.
In the summer of 2024, the Kleefstras invited cellist Joana Guerra and violinist Maria do Mar de Brito Lopes for a week-long creative residency at a special location: the Thomas Church in Katlijk.
Like with the previous releases from the IT DEEL collaborations the central theme of for this work is the relationship between humans and nature, in all its beauty and complexity. It’s not a light topic, but one that is universal and deeply connecting. Each year, it’s remarkable to witness what has emerged from the Frisian soil in the dialogue between the Kleefstras and their guest musicians.

ensemble 0 (pronounced zero) is a band /contemporary music ensemble, whose line-up and instruments can change according to the repertoire performed. Directed by Stéphane Garin and Sylvain Chauveau, performing pieces by, mostly, contemporary composers including its own members, and working with numerous collaborators.

The year 0 of ensemble 0 was 2004, when four friends decided to assemble a vessel, essentially dedicated to acoustic music for the present time. A light and adaptable vessel, of varying geometry and geography (its members are based in different cities and countries, including France, Catalonia and Belgium.)

Zero, in cartography, is the reference level from which altitudes are erected. In other words, where the field of possibilities stands. Depending on the chosen direction, the disentangled or deciphered compositions, the musicians and instruments brought in, ensemble 0 performs upon a unique range of reliefs. First, its own compositions are specifically performed by the pulsating heart of the collective, i.e. a trio made of Sylvain Chauveau (acoustic guitar, glockenspiel), Stéphane Garin (metallic percussions) and Joël Mérah (acoustic guitar). Then, with a contemporary repertoire the ensemble expands according to the needs of each work. ensemble 0 occasionally performs pieces by Moondog, Julius Eastman or Ligeti but is particularly keen on living composers such as Tristan Perich, Michael Pisaro or Rachel Grimes.

Here, ensemble 0 plays in according to the movie: L’Incroyable Femme Des Neiges (directed by Sébastien Betbeder with Blanche Gardin and Philippe Katerine) a soundtrack with their own strong and beautiful imprint.

Drumcode launches a new V/A series ‘DC4’ inspired by their popular A-Sides compilations. ‘DC4’ showcases a quartet of sure-fire heaters from the label’s extended family of artists. The EP features two mainstays of Drumcode, Timmo and Mark Reeve, while fleshing out the techno sides of Kaufmann and Goom Gum (in collaboration with rising London artists RDNK) after they debuted on Truesoul in recent times. Kaufmann’s curiously titled ‘Broncho’s Sandman’ kicks things off, a punchy slice of dancefloor tackle marked by a catchy vocal line, with a foot in techno and progressive alike. Timmo follows up last year’s tidy contribution to A-Sides Vol.13, with a technicoloured techno cut that bubbles with bags of personality, as any cut titled ‘Miami Vice’ should! The Bulgarian has poured plenty of hours into the creation of the track, which espouses an otherworldly celestial energy. It's been four years since Mark Reeve’s last contribution on Drumcode, with the excellent mini album ‘Breathe’. The Frankfurt-based British producer makes a timely return with the storming ‘Stop, Go’, that fuses together elements of techno, hard trance and pop for an inspired five minute dancefloor workout. Goom Gum & RDNK team up for the first time ‘It’s Time To Get High. The track begins life as a crisp melodic cut, before transforming into a trippy slab of psychedelia in the second half. This is begging to be rinse in an outdoor party setting.

In our era of post-truth & questioned realities, tin foil hatted folk project their insecurities onto the puppet masters, those holding the strings to us all, the endless psy-op at play. For those opting for psychedelic enlightenment over psychological terror, we find solace in the dance, especially when the music is from heads such as Jeku.

All dies trägt zu einer Atmosphäre erhöhter Präsenz bei, einem organischen Blitz, der tief aus dem Unterbewusstsein kommt. Entstanden aus Ideen, die in einem ruhigen Kloster und abgeschieden von weltlichen Einflüssen entstanden sind, wird der liturgische Rahmen des Albums durch die innige Hingabe zweier Schwestern gefiltert - ihre eigene Interpretation von Popmusik, befreit von Anmaßung und oberflächlichem Glamour. Der Titel des Albums stammt, wie viele seiner Songs, aus einem Bibelvers, in diesem Fall Lukas 12:49. Aber Schwester Irene und Schwester Marimil haben ihn in einen Raum gebracht, in dem alle spirituell Suchenden die Übertragung oder: ungewöhnliche Hermeneutik schätzen können. Die Texte sprechen universelle Bedürfnisse, Wünsche und Sehnsüchte an: ewige Liebe und Zuneigung, ein Ende der Einsamkeit, eine neue Form der Erleichterung, Befreiung von der Angst vor dem Tod. Anstelle von Hymnenformeln bedient sich Schwester Irene, vielleicht unbeabsichtigt, der damals modischen Folk- und Psychedelic-Musik, um eine Predigt zu halten, die sich wie Liebesbriefe an eine göttliche Präsenz liest und über jede formale Religion hinaus zur Seele spricht. ,Fire of God's Love" ist ein inspirierendes Archiv früher elektronischer Experimente zwischen zwei befreundeten Frauen und Mystikerinnen, eine Dokumentation ihrer göttlichen Energie, die auf disziplinierte Weise kanalisiert wurde. Bei seiner Erstveröffentlichung war es weder ein durchschlagender Erfolg noch ein Misserfolg, sondern wurde vor allem mit Neugierde aufgenommen. Die beiden haben nie wieder gemeinsam Musik gemacht, und in den 50 Jahren seitdem zieht ihre einmalige Zusammenarbeit weiterhin Zuhörer an, die sie in Plattenläden entdecken (sei es die Originalpressung von Phillips oder die klanglich überlegene Neuauflage von 1976 bei Alba House Communications) oder eher über YouTube, als zufällig entdeckter und heiß diskutierter Kultklassiker. Heute lebt Schwester Irene in Sydney, Australien, und freut sich, dass ein neues Publikum in ihrer Musik mit Schwester Marimil einen Sinn findet. Ihre Geschichte ist ein Beweis dafür, dass man nicht viel braucht, um ein visionäres, zeitloses Album zu schaffen: ein Tonbandgerät, Freundschaft und ,The Fire of God's Love", um den Weg in die Zukunft zu ebnen.
