Waking Up the new album from Annabelle Chairlegs - produced by Ty Segall

With roots in the industrial heartland of New Jersey. Annabelle Chairleg's music fuses gritty, dark, mechanical textures with a playful and whimsical spirit. The band has shared bills with The Zombies, Lucy Dacus and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, while lighting up festivals including Austin City Limits, SXSW, Levitation, and Austin Psych Fest.
On her newest release, Waking Up, lead singer Lindsey Mackin is joined by Nick Cornetti on drums and Derek Strahan on bass. Produced and recorded by Ty Segall in his home studio in Topanga, CA- this marks Chairlegs’ third full-length album— a bold new chapter for the Austin mainstay.

The rubber of ER Jurken"s pure pop fantasias meets the road on his second album, aided and inspired by a power trio of players from Chicago"s Junegrass to crank it up and out of the park. Paul Von Mertens" string and horn arrangements highlight the gritted teeth and dripping sweat that belie Ed & Co"s easy riding rock, while Jurken"s heavenly vocal choir provides balm to transcend and defy the stings of everyday misfortune.

Whitelands' second album Sunlight Echoes builds on their elemental debut - that won them fans from Slowdive to David Jonsson - with a more expansive sound that takes them out of the shoegaze shadows to somewhere bigger, better and brighter. Produced by long-time collaborator Ian Flynn and mixed by double Grammy Award-winner Eduardo De La Paz (New Order, The Horrors, The Charlatans, The KVB, Drug Store Romeos), there are soaring string arrangements (by Iskra Strings) and Lush guest vocals from labelmate Emma Anderson. "We're coming back with a lot more maturity and realness," says singer and guitarist Etienne Quartey-Papafio of their step up. "It shows in how much more emotional our music has become." With maturity comes a newfound confidence, so not only are there stunning melodies everywhere, but Etienne's vocals are front and centre throughout. "It's been really cool to watch Etienne push through boundaries," adds bassist Vanessa Govinden. "I like the direction we've taken on this album. We're taking a risk. It's half and half." She's right - the first half of the album has an almost Britpop breeziness, that belies the serious subject matter that inspired the songs, while the second half gets heavier, in all senses, with added grit and gravitas."This album is one of enduring," says Etienne of the overarching theme. "We had family that were dying, I was broke, there was a shortage of my ADHD medication_ I was suffering, but not just me, everyone around me was too." "The last two years have been challenging," concludes Vanessa. "The universe really fucked with us. That's why there are themes of loss, disconnection, fragmentation and yearning, but on the other side there is also unity and hope." Sunlight Echoes is a poetic, melodic statement of intent from this formidable band. Whitelands have fought back and triumphed in the face of adversity.

Oakland's DJ Mes returns with a fresh dose of jacked-up house in the 'D3w W3rk' series. Volume three blends gritty funk and rawness into fun, functional sounds. The EP opens with 'Detroit Ratchet City,' a bold, chunky anthem for pumping up the sweat before moving into the loopy 'For The People' where slinky percussion and soulful vocal hooks build a bristling arrangement. 'Look at Ya Shine' turns up the heat with a sleazy, slamming low end and then 'Peace of Mind' closes on a steamy, old-school tip with filtered synths, hooky male vocals and a retro charm that proves DJ Mes knows how to work the floor by joining the dots between the past, present and future.

Back when the first white labels started floating through the hands of German, British, American and Canadian DJs in late ’84, nobody was ready for what was coming. The official drop hit in early ’85 and the scene was never the same again. This was the moment Mike Mareen broke through the static. Yeah, he’d been working with Chris Evans-Ironside since the ’70s but nothing hinted that together they’d channel something this futuristic. “Dancing In The Dark” sounded like it had slipped through a wormhole: melancholic, hypnotic vocals wrapped in vocoder haze, riding an arrangement so razor-sharp it made most releases of the era feel prehistoric. It didn’t need the pop charts… It owned the clubs. And the clubs listened.

London. Berlin. Madrid. Rome. Paris. Lisbon. Amsterdam. Athens. Toronto. NYC. Tokyo. Mexico City.

One drop of that electro bassline and DJs were hooked. Crowds were hooked. The whole underground was hooked. Soon Europe’s radio charts caved under its pressure, and the track crossed borders on mixtapes, becoming a cult anthem behind the Iron Curtain. It was everywhere, even where it technically wasn’t allowed to be.

Fast-forward four decades and the spell hasn’t faded. “Dancing In The Dark” still shows up in indie dance, italo wave, house and deep house sets. Producers keep re-editing it like it’s sacred material. It’s one of those tracks that DJs treasure, a timeless weapon, one of the top three defining singles of Mareen’s entire career.

And now for the 40th anniversary of its official release, Vintage Pleasure Boutique and Night’n Day Records drop the vinyl every collector and selector has been waiting for: a special reissue loaded with four brand-new remixes spanning the full spectrum of today’s underground indie/disco/italo/house energy.

Tallac – the American Berlin dweller – dives deep into the hypnotic soul of the original, pulling out its buried deep-house DNA and carving out a spacious, emotional roller.

Luksek, Italian producer & DJ, goes raw and dirty: loop-driven, gritty, underground, hypnotic, the kind of edit that eats dancefloors alive.

The wax also features two historical heavy-hitters: the 1985 Jens Lissat’s team remix and Luis Rodriguez’s original arrangement, essential cuts in the Mareen universe.

Mighty Joseph is the combination of emcees Vast Aire (Cannibal Ox) with his long-time rhyme ally Karniege. The duo's sole album, Empire State (2008) was released during the tail-end of the last great non-commercial Hip-Hop period.

Never released on vinyl before, the album will be available soon on a double LP edition.

Rooted in the concrete streets but lyrically abstract, features and beats are provided by equal musical foils including Madlib, Camu Tao, Murs, J-Zone, Poison Pen and Vordul Mega (Cannibal Ox) among others.

Fan and critical attention were positive with All Hip Hop summing the album as "solid post-millennium product that bridges the gap between gritty street tales and a paranoid view of the future."

Plug One Magazine added that "Empire State" "unravels a unique perspective, documenting not only much personal change between the two emcees but also the changes in the streets of New York City. From poverty, to the September 11 attacks, to the abuse of Hip Hop culture in general, "Empire State" stands strong as a snapshot of the city."

Dallas, Texas resident Ben Hixon is a consistent performer with a tasteful take on deep house that most often comes on this label. His final missive of the year opens up with 'Meant To Be', a nice bumpy cut with bass reverberations and glitchy percussive textures. Hi-hats tick in the background to keep time as smudged vocals burn with soul and lolloping rhythms take centre stage. 'Love Crazy' is another stripped-back sound that is dusty and gritty with bass that folds in on itself and more sprinkled analogue percussion to add extra bite.

Over two decades later, the underground classic that lit the fuse on indie hip-hop’s next era finally gets its vinyl debut. Originally dropped in 2001, Table Scraps is a gritty, no-frills compilation of unreleased tracks and lost sessions from the formative years of MHz, the Columbus, Ohio hip hop crew that helped define an era before the mainstream caught wind of the underground. Recorded between 1997–2001, the album is raw, urgent, and packed with early glimpses of the greatness that would follow.
The core lineup is fully intact and fully in form: Copywrite flexes his unmatched wordplay and delivers two self-produced heaters, “The Funnel” (co-produced) and “Combustion Spontaneous,” proving he’s just as deadly behind the boards. Tage Future brings futuristic cadence and sharp delivery, Jakki Da Motamouth stays unapologetically rugged, and the late Camu Tao is in rare, untamed form, a creative force whose brilliance only grew from here. Holding it all together are beats from RJD2, Mighty Mi, Camu, and Copywrite himself.
Pressed on vinyl for the first time ever, Table Scraps is more than a collection, it’s a time capsule from a crew that helped shape the underground before it had a name.

Its members have deep roots in 90s and 2000s mixed-bill shows, basement gigs, and tours that crossed paths with the broader Midwest DIY network. Collectively they've played in projects like Towers, Stillwell, Engines, Ghost Towns, Sore History and others, giving The Feat a seasoned musical identity that blends melodic punk, indie rock and emo without fitting cleanly into any single lane. Their songwriting leans heavily into emotional grit, sharp guitar work and the kind of lived-in perspective that comes from decades in the community

Known for his raw yet precision-tooled club cuts and a sound that moves from warehouse grit to late-night euphoria, the Stuttgart-based producer once again delivers tracks that are direct, functional and full of character, built for DJs who like it tight, driving and emotional at the same time.
On remix duties, Berlin icon Anja Schneider flips Ackermanns ideas into elegant, rolling peak-time material, balancing subtle tension with her trademark sense of groove and warmth. Rising force Confidential Recipe pushes things further into raw, percussive territory, upping the pressure with jacking drums and rave-soaked energy made for smoke-filled rooms and redlined sound systems.

Calling All Captains have built a reputation for turning personal struggle into explosive, emotionally charged punk rock. Iconic hip-hop duo The High & Mighty, composed of rapper Mr. Eon and producer DJ Mighty Mi, make their long-awaited return with Sound of Market, their first studio album in over twenty years. Metalheadz and Quartz present Interloper, a body of work years in the making that captures the evolution and persistence of a truly singular producer. Sparked by an invitation from Goldie in 2018, the project developed organically into a statement piece, shaped by shifting environments and a relentless drive to refine his craft. Quartz, also known as Elliot Garvey, has long stood apart from the noise. A Welsh producer with little interest in visibility or self-promotion, he has built a reputation on substance alone. Interloper reflects that focus: textured, brooding, and meticulously detailed, balancing grit and clarity while maintaining the looming tension that defines his sound. The album’s title hints at Garvey’s place within the culture - present but never fully belonging - and the music carries that same sense of quiet defiance. Intense without theatrics and deeply personal without pretence, Interloper is a record that doesn’t ask to be seen, only to be felt.

Dream Girls, Beauty And The Beast director Bill Condon returns to the movie musical in this dazzling Technicolor-hued fantasy. Valentín (Diego Luna), a political prisoner, shares a cell with Molina (Tonatiuh), a window dresser convicted of public indecency. The two form an unlikely bond as Molina recounts the plot of a Hollywood musical starring his favorite silver screen diva, Ingrid Luna (Jennifer Lopez). Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical hit. "The film juxtaposes very gritty, graphic, prison scenes with equally extreme 1950s period authentic technicolor musical sequences that replicate both technicolor look and aspect ratio as the film switches between both environments. Lopez looks great and the musical sequences are glorious. The supporting cast, especially the two male leads are top shelf Oscar worthy performances. It is superbly executed.

Spandau20 delivers its eleventh various artists release, a sonically rich and future-facing blend of broken grooves, spatial moods and modern Detroit romanticism. Four tracks, four new angles on the dancefloor. ANNA Z sets the tone with 'Kabeljau', an eclectic, IDM-flirting workout. On the opening track, elastic rhythms stretch and snap while ethereal pads drift overhead, punctured by sudden turns and glitchy surprises. Moody, weird and beautifully unpredictable. Closing the EP, Claus accelerates the pulse. 'Moist Logic' is a faster, more urgent exploration of the techno continuum. Machine funk encoded into a forward-thrusting groove, a sleek atmosphere swirling around a sharp, kinetic core. With SPANDAU20 011, the West-Berlin collective celebrates a hybrid future that is rhythmically adventurous, melodically rich and rooted in the love for the dancefloor. "The Cream Tape" is a gritty yet stylish showcase from Toronto’s The 6th Letter and Buffalo’s Billie Essco, entirely produced by Raz Fresco and released through his BKRSCLB label. Raz's signature production, which layers vintage soul and jazz samples with dusty drums and atmospheric textures, provides a cinematic backdrop that suits both MCs’ lyrical swagger and contemplative tones.

With sharp verses from Raz Fresco himself on select tracks, the album has a distinct cohesion that blends lyrical dexterity with refined production, and also featurwes Jae Skeese, a rising force from Conway The Machine's Drumwork crew, adding a potent Buffalo flavor.

The artwork by Harvey Dentist perfectly complements the album’s vibe, referencing the bold aesthetics of streetwear and modern art, with nods to BAPE and KAWS that echo the album's sense of style and substance. Bars & Noble, the latest release by Black Soprano Family affiliate Heem, is a hard-hitting album steeped in the gritty realism and lyrical finesse that define Buffalo's hip-hop scene. The album features an all-star lineup of collaborators, including Conway The Machine, Benny The Butcher himself, Jae Skeese, Boldy James, Jay Worthy, and Illy Foo, each adding their signature styles to the mix. CRYME's 808-driven electro, ghetto house hybrid "London Boy" gets the MCR-T treatment, spiced up with a dose of Garage. The Berlin-based artist reshaped the bassline into a gritty reese bass and put in the iconic UK hardcore vocal "your name is not down, you not coming in," perfectly amplifying the track's original UK flair.
A2 - CRYME - London Boy (Roza Terenzi Remix)
Roza Terenzi joins the "London Boy" Remix EP with a sleek, modern tech house cut. Flipping the distinct 808 cowbells into heavily processed percussive elements that bounce through the mix while carrying a melodic line. Her remix is packed with her quirky yet precise sound design and kinetic frequencies. The original vocal phrases are creatively chopped up into fragments and reassembled so they become part of the rhythmic backbone.

The LP “Cassiopeia”, sets the tone with its mysterious, latesummer atmosphere. Drawing inspiration from cinematic storytelling and layered soundscapes, it unfolds as both intimate and expansive, resonating with themes of release and tension - proper to Butschi and DJ Sonnenbrand music identities. The LP comes with two extended B-side remixes, embodied with a grittier and raw sound, channeling nostalgic 90s trance aesthetics and early Ibiza vibes.

RAW, RUTHLESS AND CEREMONIALLY DARK!

Only two years after its inception in 2023, the ominous entity hailing from Germany has come up with their first full-length. Consisting of 6 songs with the first one being an instrumental intro, "Fiery Paths" is a very convincing effort on all levels. Notwithstanding the fact INFERNAL PRESENCE has only been active for 2 years, their hybrid of Black and Death Metal sounds as if it had been composed by a seasoned band. Unlike many outfits whose songs consist of a salad of riffs randomly thrown together, INFERNAL PRESENCE are apt at cleverly composing their material by frequently alternating between different tempi and moods. Fast tremolo picked riffs akin to DISSECTION or MAYHEM are alternated with palm muted Thrash riffs or atmospheric slow-paced arpeggios reminding of WATAIN or ONDSKAPT.

In so doing the two-piece creates dynamic songs that succeed in truly capturing the listener's attention. Just listen to standout tracks like "Eternal Exodus" or the exceptional "Tomb Procession" with its slithering groove and you will see our point proven. Although, only sharing certain musical elements with said bands, the suffocating atmosphere of "Fiery Paths" reminds of NEGATIVE PLANE's first album or early SECRETS OF THE MOON. Fortunately, the production fits the material just splendidly, too. While being gritty and raw, thus emphasising the album’s ferociousness, it's still polished enough so that no detail gets buried in the mix.

INFERNAL PRESENCE unleashed a record suffused with unrelenting darkness! If you consider yourself a fan of some of the bands mentioned above, do yourself a favour and listen to this beast of an album!
