A seriously talented artist and shaper of off-kilter sonics, Jimmy works his alchemy in all the right places on this impressive collection of creations. Punchy drums and uplit mood colour the way in opener 'Nail Varnish'', as 'Delve Deep' opens the Arps to crunched drums, setting the mind to cycle with impressive effect. Over on the flip, rising pads and rhythmic shuffle fuse with warped effects as you skip through the sunny climes of 'That's More Like It'. Last but not least, you're met with the RAW punch of 'Breath': a full complement of Millsian influenced psychotropia that leaves you screaming for more, you've been warned.

Berlin’s ZentaSkai continues his slew of limited-run 200-copy vinyl releases via his Mask Records this July, presenting the ‘JIMMY’ EP, and following up last year’s ‘Bob’ EP and two instalments from his Cuddling Monsters project with Laura Merino Allue.

Across the four tracks on ‘JIMMY’, ZentaSkai delves deep, placing mysterious, foreboding synths over crunchy taped drums and exploring a variety of tempos. Dub influences are rife, its elements echoing across carefully laid-out Techno grooves while minimal shifts subtly build the energy. With ‘JIMMY’, ZentaSkai once again offers a journey through sound already supported by Luke Slater, Blasha & Allatt, Truncate, Elisa Bee, and many more. ZentaSkai (aka No Mad Ronin, Matt Nowak, and MASK) is a German DJ and producer active since 1997. Based out of his studio in Berlin, ZentaSkai runs the Zaijenroots label and, since 2017, the Mask sub-label, which houses his stunning 2023 ‘Architecture of the Mind’ LP as well as his Cuddling Monsters alias - with other credits including a release on Jerome Sydenham’s Ibadan Records and support from the likes of Richie Hawtin, Joseph Capriati, Marcel Dettmann, Luke Slater, Laurant Garnier, DVS1, Ben Sims and Radio Slave.

Jimmy Whoo and Muddy Monk have definitely never left each other's side. Since their first - and divine, like the title of the song - collaboration in the summer of 2019, the French producer and the Swiss singer have enjoyed meeting up in the studio to compose four-handed. Their budding friendship has quickly developed into a lasting artistic bond. There's an instant chemistry between them in their joint compositions. After once again inviting Muddy Monk on the track Aqua from his Motel Music trilogy, Jimmy Whoo has come up with a more developed collaboration for a fascinating EP, To the Moon, which will brighten up the autumn.

Gathered in the Ciel Rouge Studio in Paris, the two acolytes bring their instruments and machines, a priori to compose instrumentals, and we know their affinity for contemplative, floating and addictive music. When we work together, we produce sounds that have a common touch," explain Jimmy Whoo and Muddy Monk. We share the same taste for freedom, travel, dreams and the desire to ride in music". As always between them, their circumstantial meeting leads to a healthy emulation, an obvious magnetism. There's a clear cinematic quality to the heady melodies and harmonic patterns, reminiscent of some of the big names in dreamy electronica (Boards of Canada) or retro-futurist pop (Air).

Of the four tracks on the EP, To the Moon and So Close to You sound like potential singles on first listen. Muddy Monk must have written a few lyrics on these instrumental tracks, and you'll immediately recognise his free-spirited style ("Walking on the moon/Let me please come home", co-written with Jimmy Whoo on vocals) and pensive style ("Perdu en terre étrangère/J'éliminais quelques doutes"). Mixed by Stéphane 'Alf' Briat and illustrated by a graphic cover by 22note, this EP brings together two talents for a superb musical journey from the earth to the moon.

Auf seinem ersten Album für Verve Records präsentierte sich der Hammond-Organist Jimmy Smith 1962
mit zwei sehr unterschiedlichen Besetzungen: Während er die ersten vier Stücke mit einer von Oliver Nelson
arrangierten groovigen Big Band aufnahm, spielte er die übrigen Stücke mit seinem regulären Trio ein, mit
dem er zuvor schon Alben für Blue Note gemacht hatte. Die von Creed Taylor produzierten Sessions waren
ein Wendepunkt für Smiths Karriere: mit dem Titel “Walk On The Wild Side”, der Platz 21 der Billboard
Hot 100 Charts erreichte, landete er seinen bis dahin größten Hit.

Bei seinen ersten sieben Studioalben für Verve hatte der Hammond-Organist Jimmy Smith stets mit TopArrangeuren wie Oliver Nelson, Claus Ogerman und Lalo Schifrin zusammengearbeitet. Erst auf dem
1965 erschienenen Album “Organ Grinder Swing” kehrte er zur Trio-Besetzung mit Gitarre und Schlagzeug
zurück, mit der er zu Beginn seiner Karriere seine Aufnahmen für Blue Note eingespielt hatte. Mit dem
Album landete Smith die zweithöchste Chart-Platzierung seiner Karriere.

Als Rudy Van Gelder noch das kleine Tonstudio nutzte, das er sich im Haus seiner Eltern in Hackensack,
New Jersey, eingerichtet hatte, wich Blue Note für Aufnahmen mit größeren Ensembles eine Zeit lang
in den Ballsaal des Manhattan Towers Hotels in New York aus. Im August 1957 und im Februar 1958
schmiss Hammond-Organist Jimmy Smith dort mit zwei unterschiedlichen All-Star-Bands seine boppigbluesige “House Party”. Bei denselben Sessions entstanden auch die Aufnahmen für das Nachfolgealbum
“The Sermon!”.
