Featuring timeless waltzes and polkas by Johann Strauss I & II , including "An der schonen, blauen Donau", "Kaiser-Walzer" and the festive "Radetzky March", this album captures the sparkle, elegance, and tradition of Vienna's celebrated New Year concerts. Leading the charge was a young band from West London called Pressure Point, whose debut single Mellow Moods caused a real stir on its release in 1985. The Stan Getz-inspired bossa nova was released initially on Viceroy Records, and immediately punched well above its weight, thanks to the considerable talents of producer Steve James, vocalist Lydia Gayle and some of London's leading session musicians: saxophonists Jamie Talbot and Ian Trimmer, trumpeter Steve Sidwell and his brother, trombonist Neil, and keyboard player Simon Etchells. It quickly became Capital Radio's 'People's Choice', winning praise on air from the likes of Kid Creole himself - August Darnell - and went on to be re-released by Bellaphon in Germany and by Gilles Peterson's HardBack Records. It is widely viewed as a rare groove classic, with copies changing hands for hefty sums in the following decades. London- based Pressure Point's core members were Matthew Best, Anthony 'Hugo' Longden and Sean Maher, who went on to work with Soul Legend Miss PP Arnold to complete 'Dreaming', a now legendary and as yet unreleased 1989 album

Recently unveiled Norwegian Heavy Metal act Avrak was founded in 2023 by guitarists Anders Hegna & Ted Skjellum; himself notable for being half of legendary duo, Darkthrone. The pair had known each other for many years, & with a mutual passion for old, classic rock & metal they finally embarked upon this new journey together under the banner of Avrak.

Ted had declared from the beginning that he would in fact not carry out main vocal duties in the band, & so Anders - with his own voice befitting of the style - took on this task.

Still quite early on within the formative stages, Terje Kråbøl was brought in on the drums &, from there-on, with his percussive presence backing up some thunderous riffing, the creative work accelerated until enough material was produced (and relentlessly refined), culminating in the self-titled, hook-laden & doom-laced rock debut, ‘Avrak’.

Suitably & epically defined as a monumental “Heavy Metal voyage from the peak of the mountains to the depths of the seas”, & delivering themes relating to empowerment in the face of increasingly corrupt times, ‘Avrak’ is a combination of a vast multitude of influences, as the eclectic, deceptively nuanced nine track offering features a classic heavy metal & doom rock backbone, with further experimentation including synth passages, & even some traces of black metal riffing in its DNA.

Avrak subsequently held its debut show in their local town of Porsgrunn in late April 2026, backed by the brand new bassist & final piece of the puzzle, Steinar Gundersen, with more live shows intended in future to support the release.

This edition of ‘Avrak’ is presented on limited silver vinyl, including printed inner sleeve with full lyrics.

A year after the release of Adriatique’s debut LP, ‘Nude’, Afterlife presents a seven-track remix package to breathe new life into the originals.

The album found Adriatique, the duo of Adrian Shala and Adrian Schweizer, explore a more downtempo, contemplative sound than they were known for. Its profound musicality makes rich source material for a set of dancefloor interpretations, which Tale Of Us have curated together with Adriatique for the label’s 30th release.

First is Tale Of Us and Mathame’s version of ‘Mystery’, where they extend the blissful tones and Jono McCleery’s vocals into a euphoric dancefloor cut. Next Solomun brings some electro flair to the vocoder-led title track, before Kobosil toughens up ‘Tachykardia’ with a warehouse-ready kick drum and twists the serene voice of Delhia De France. Rampa is another new name for Afterlife Recordings; he gives ‘Nude’ a slick, techy overhaul to complete the vinyl release in fine style.

The digital release contains an Agents Of Time epic in their remix of ‘Buchla’s Dreaming’, Johannes Brecht’s shimmering take on ‘Ray Reincarnation’ and a chopped-up remix of Mystery by Isoleé. A diverse, tastefully-executed remix EP which does justice to the quality of Adriatique’s album.

Gabriella Cilmi's talents were undeniable from a young age, leading her to sign to Australia's Mushroom Records when she was just 13-years-old. Just a few years later, the breakthrough success of 'Sweet About Me' and her Gold-certified UK Top 10 debut album 'Lessons To Be Learned' took the teenager global. But she discovered that the more success she had, the more she was subjected to countless opinions on what she should do next - an awkward situation for an artist who just wanted to be herself. With Elvis Presley wishes you a "Blue Christmas", the Drifters wishing you a "White Christmas", a "Christmas Prayer" by Billy Fury, a "Christmas Present" from Solomon Burke, "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" with Brenda Lee, "Twistin' Bells" by Santo & Johnny, and the "Jingle Bell Rock" with Chubby Checker & Bobby Rydell. The Cadillacs sings "Rudolph The Red- Nosed Reindeer" and Chuck Berry "Runs With Rudolph", Frankie Valli & The 4 Seasons "Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", Johnny Cash with his "Little Drummer Boy" and finally David Seville and the Chipmunks with "The Chipmunk Song".

The group's goal was, "Let's go back to melodic tunes, let's be more of a proper rock band," Hozie explains. Sonically, the band aimed for "this late '80's/ early 90's Stone Roses- meets- Janes Addiction thing, with more riffing and guitar solos." Where the band's earlier material took a more explicitly sociopolitical bent, Hozie and Belfilgio's writing on 'All Inside Aquarium' is deliberately more concerned with the personal, poetics, and play. With each single from the album, the band have created a limited edition 7" singles series. Each 7" has a unique colour and individual exclusive artwork that corresponds to a section of the 'All Inside Aquarium' album cover designed by Nikki. Deathbomb Arc has a long history of bringing unlikely artists together for collaborations. From True Neutral Crew featuring Grammy winner Daveed Diggs (clipping.), SB The Moor, and members of Ratsmagick to the Arc Mountain album which paired artsts from the Deathbomb and Hausu Mountain rosters including Fire-Toolz (WARP) and They Hate Change (Jagjaguar). Now Deathbomb is excited to share this surprise crew release from BBBBBBB, Fatboi Sharif, and Ratsmagick, entitled 'Christmas in Sodom'.
All three acts come together for the title track, and then contribute solo efforts to expound on the dark absurdist themes in their own manner, providing a deconstruction of how all the styles were combined.
The duo of BBBBBBB are leaders of the underground electronic hardcore scene Japan, often playing alongside their peers and collaborators, Dos Monos. BBBBBBB released 'Positive Violence' on Deathbomb Arc last year and will release their followup with the label this coming fall in conjunction with their 2nd tour of the UK/EU.
Fatboi Sharif's most recent full lengths are an impressive one-two punch released by Deathbomb Arc and then Backwoodz. Sharif returns to the EU/UK this Sept, after a special appearance at the Clipping. curated 'Splendor & Misery' fest in New York in Aug.
Relative newcomers, the Philadelphia based Ratsmagick, are masterminded by Dennis Martinelli of Knifeplay. This loose 7ish piece group includes Deathbomb Arc founder Brian Miller of Foot Village (Fat Cat) as one of their two, dueling drummers. Outside of Knifeplay's extensive touring schedule, Dennis has found time to finish a Ratsmagick full length due on Deathbomb this winter.

Much like a teacher, Meryl Streek imparts his knowledge and lived experiences to all who are willing to listen. His third album, ‘Stories They Don’t Teach You At School’, serves as an alternative form of education, delivered through a visceral blend of factual soundbites and raw emotion, loops and samples, guitars and bass. The lyrics resonate with core values of compassion, resilience, and community—themes rarely explored within a classroom setting or seen in today's fragmented society. By prioritising conviction over commercial success, the Dublin artist's outspokenness may invite controversy. Yet beneath the fervor lies a profound desire for positive social change at home in Ireland, and beyond.
Meryl Streek returned to Darkland Studios in Dublin to fine-tune the recordings previously made in a shed at the back of his ma's garden. Here he continued the genre-blurring nature of his earlier work, enticing listeners toward dissonant landscapes and hypnotic rhythms. Gentle piano tones collide with abrasive synths, creating a striking tension between beauty and noise. Streek tempers his rage when appropriate, integrating atmospheric textures and pop sensibilities into his ever-expanding sonic collage.
As is tradition with any Meryl Streek record, ‘Stories They Don’t Teach You At School’ unearths many uncomfortable truths. ‘Rotten Fruit’ examines media manipulation and the numbing proliferation of misinformation, all soundtracked by synth-punk. With gliding keys and a crunchy bassline, ‘Council Estates’ critiques systemic government failures affecting the working class. ‘Kelly’ is a slice of electronica that details an ongoing criminal investigation, currently classified as a “Contested Cause of Death”. The indie pop of 'The Chancer' brings much-needed attention to landlord politicians. As the album progresses, the mission remains absolute: to provide a voice for the voiceless.
To amplify these narratives, Meryl Streek handpicked a diverse group of collaborators for the project. ‘Rotten Fruit’ features Steve Ignorant of anarcho-punk collective CRASS. ‘Depression’ opens with a touching recording of the late Liam Norton, close friend and former touring companion, while Pete Holidai of The Radiators From Space contributes guitars on the song. Comedian Phill Jupitus provides the spoken outro for ‘The Chancer'. ‘Housing For All’ incorporates audio from Derelict Ireland campaigners Frank O’Connor and Jude Sherry. Venn Records owner and Gallows guitarist Laurent ‘Lags’ Barnard joins forces with Adebisi Shank bassist Vinny McCreith on the aggressive ‘Bullet,’ while Sophie Porter of Other Half provides bass guitar for ‘Life is Not a Rehearsal’. The album concludes with a three-minute spoken word piece by Frankie McNamara, the viral creator behind ‘Meditations for the Anxious Mind’.
In her 1990 protest anthem “Black Boys on Mopeds,” the late Sinead O’Connor warned, “To say what you feel is to dig your own grave”. With this release, Meryl Streek firmly holds the shovel.

Official reissue for this long lost 1966 LP, the very first to be endorsed by the Trevor Lucas estate. Pressed on orange vinyl for RSD 2022. Ultra-rare 1966 solo album by singer/songwriter Trevor Lucas of Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, and Election. This Australian born folk legend recorded his own songs and a handful of covers – mostly solo acoustic, occasionally accompanied by bass, concertina, and fiddle. This is the first ever authorized reissue (by his estate), a long lost gem from a seminal songwriter.

Jude Brothers sails toward a new shore with Dogwood Maiden Voyage. Created in living rooms, recording studios, and train tunnels between Tennessee and Arkansas, it's an adventurous album that's every bit as eclectic as its world-traveling creator. Jude's songs are rarely linear. Instead, they explode outward in unexpected directions, exploring left-hand turns and detours before returning to their original paths. Originally released April 15th, 2014, Do to the Beast was on its release the first new album by The Afghan Whigs in over a decade and a half. Founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1988, the band has long stood out from its peers, with their savage, rapturous blend of hard rock, classic soul, and frontman Greg Dulli’s searing obsessions. The album served as both a homecoming – it marked their then return to Sub Pop, for whom the Whigs were the first signing from outside the label’s Northwest base – and a glimpse into the future of one of the most acclaimed bands of the past thirty years.

DINTE presents a collection of southern gospel sides from late 1940s to mid 1950s capturing the post-WWII departure from rural folk & shape-note singing traditions that had previously defined the music, to quartets and vocal harmony groups embracing of driving, uptempo boogie-woogie rhythms and spirituals borrowed from the black church. Meticulously transferred and restored from the original 78 RPM and transcription discs by collector James Zurek

Scottish musician Kay Logan (aka Helena Celle) self-released the prescient collection of oddball aleatoric bangers "Copy Music" in 2021, before pulling it from circulation. With the help of London imprint SWIMS, this cult album is now remastered and available on vinyl for the first time, under the new name "Endless Waltz". This will be the final Helena Celle album.

Raised on a diet of industrial queer pioneers Coil and Throbbing Gristle, occultish physics (John Dee, Aleister Crowley) and Frank Zappa, Kay's work has toyed and probed at the fringes of outsider art and technology for over ten years. Her 2016 album "If I Can't Handle Me At My Best..." established Celle's unique sonic language of unrepeatably gnarled techno, coaxed from a bewildering array of disintegrating midi controllers, Markov chains, and whatever else came to hand.

"Endless Waltz" pursues this formula to its bizarre conclusion: 18 fever loops of algorithmically crumpled dance music, pulled through a cheese cloth of obscure '90s computer game palettes and pop froth wordplay. Some of these delirious vignettes evoke a rudimentary AI regurgitating Captain Beefheart scores. Others, as one fan put it, are "sort of like if 'Commercial Album'-era Residents did an album on Rephlex". Enjoy the trip.

Almost Starlight is the extraordinary new album by Jem Finer (hurdy-gurdy) and John Matthias (violin). Produced by Jay Auborn and recorded in a Medieval Church, deep in the Devon countryside, in the Summer of 2025, the music is suffused with light, heat and the natural acoustics of the space.

The album defies categorisation; forced to pigeon hole it the nearest approximation would be ‘modern-classical’ but this ignores its myriad influences and explorations which encompass inspiration from Arvo Pärt through Terry Riley to Can via Delius, Alice Coltrane and a subtle reimagining of electronic music played purely with acoustic instruments, bending and shaping their possibilities in surprising and unexpected directions.

Jay Auborn plays cello on a number of the compositions and his production opens up and expands the music through a skilled and imaginative use of space, paying homage to the atmosphere of the church; ‘the sound evolved… chasing the imagined acoustics of that church in my mind; a place for worshipping light with sound.’

Almost Starlight will be released on the 4th September by Touch, available as CD, vinyl, cassette and on streaming platforms.

BIOS OF THE ARTISTS

Jem Finer

Since studying computer science in the 1970s, Jem Finer has worked in various fields, including photography, film, experimental and popular music, sound recording, sculpture and installation.

Much of his work relates to systems, extended processes and extremes of scale and includes Longplayer, a musical composition repeating once every 1000 years, and the Gurdy and Hurdy stones, ancient rocks set upright in fields in East Sussex and Gloucestershire with Jimmy Cauty. Their work together includes a band, The Standing Stones, whose most recent release is Twa Sisters, featuring Iona Zajac and Daragh Lynch.

He was a founder member of The Pogues, with whom he has played, written and recorded since 1981.

Recent music revolves around a fascination with the hurdy-gurdy and includes hrdy-grdy, a cassette released by Benedict Drew’s Thanet Tape Centre. His latest collaboration, with John Matthias, Almost Starlight, will be released by Touch in September 2026.

John Matthias

Since studying Theoretical Physics in the late 1980s and 1990s, John has created music and sound in many forms, including for installation, popular music, music for film, for dance and orchestra.

Much of John’s work plays with the physics of complex systems but he is also greatly influenced by stories and song. John has collaborated with Matthew Herbert, Stanley Donwood, Jay Auborn, Radiohead, Thom Yorke, Nick Ryan and many others to create music with a variety of textures and sonorities. He is particularly interested in simplicity and form and how context informs the way music sounds.

His latest collaboration, with Jem Finer, Almost Starlight, will be released by Touch in September 2026.

Erstmals stellt sie auf einem Album eine groß angelegte Originalkomposition ins Zentrum. Ihre neun Sätze umfassende Suite für Violine und Orchester ist eine ausdrucksstarke Auseinandersetzung mit der Liebe in all ihren Facetten und fängt das gesamte Spektrum der Emotionen ein - von Zärtlichkeit und Leidenschaft bis hin zu Sehnsucht und Verlust. Über die Suite hinaus versammelt "Amour" eine vielfältige Auswahl ikonischer klassischer Werke rund um das Thema Liebe, die von Esther Abrami neu für Solo-Violine und Orchester arrangiert wurden. Ein besonderes Highlight ist Nino Rotas "Romeo and Juliet: Love Theme", mit der gefeierten Mezzosopranistin Marina Viotti. Ihre Stimme tritt dabei in einen musikalischen Dialog mit Esther Abramis Violine. Das Programm umfasst weiterhin Instrumentalarrangements von Céline Dions "All by Myself" sowie Georges Bizets "Habanera" aus "Carmen", wie auch neue Versionen für Violine und Orchester von Francis Poulencs "Les chemins de l'amour", Christoph Willibald Glucks "Tanz der seligen Geister" aus "Orfeo ed Euridice" und der virtuosen "Chaconne in g-Moll" von Tomaso Antonio Vitali. Auch eine neu arrangierte Version von Charlie Chaplins "Désillusion amoureuse" aus seinem Film "The Circus" ist auf dem Album enthalten. Im Laufe ihrer Karriere hat sich Esther Abrami einen Namen damit gemacht, klassische Musik einem breiten und vielfältigen Publikum vorzustellen. Mit "Amour" verbindet sie erstmals ihre unverwechselbare Stimme als Interpretin mit ihrem Schaffen als Komponistin. Das Album erscheint als CD sowie als Doppel-LP in einer limitierten Ecorecord InkPlosion Version, bei der jede LP individuell gestaltet ist. Die Doppel-LP enthält außerdem 3 Bonus-Tracks, die bisher nur digital erschienen sind.

Nur wenige Bands der Heavy-Metal-Szene haben im vergangenen Jahr einen ähnlich kometenhaften Aufstieg erlebt wie ORBIT CULTURE. Sviatoslav Richter war einer der größten Pianisten des 20. Jahrhunderts und viele seine Aufnahmen gelten als legendär. Im Januar 2025 sprengte Alex Cameron sein Leben in einer kontrollierten Detonation in die Luft, die vom Universum weitgehend ignoriert wurde. Die verkohlten Überreste von Camerons Leben zerfielen in Fragmente und fügten sich zu neun Songs im Stil des Synthetic Rock zusammen, die die tiefe Verwirrung und die Reue seiner Welt beschreiben.
Er findet weiterhin Teile seines eigenen Spiegelbilds in den zerrissenen Charakteren, die er erschafft und verkörpert. Der versprochene Messias. Agamemnons Kriegslust. Mel Gibsons Lösegeldforderung. Das kriegsbefürwortende Schicksal der Menschheit. Eine Trennung im Kalten Krieg. Dies sind Lieder des Protests gegen das Leben selbst. Dies ist die Welt, die unsere Väter fürchteten, und hier ist ihr Soundtrack.

1986 veröffentlichten Bassist Ron Royce (Ron Broder), Gitarrist Tommy T. Baron (Tommy Vetterli) und Schlagzeuger Marquis Marky (Markus Edelmann) ihr erstes Demotape »Death Cult« mit Hilfe von Celtic Frosts Tom Gabriel Fischer am Gesang (Fischer war auch für die Texte verantwortlich).
Kurz darauf, Anfang 1987, unterschrieben Zürichs Avantgarde-Metal-Pioniere einen Vertrag mit Noise Records aus Berlin. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte sich Bassist Ron Royce entschieden, selbst die Rolle des Leadsängers von Coroner zu übernehmen.
Schließlich buchte Karl-Ulrich Walterbach von Noise Records für Coroner Studiozeit im Berliner Music Lab Studio, damit sie ihr Debütalbum unter den wachsamen Augen von Harris Johns aufnehmen konnten. »R.I.P.« wurde im Juni 1987 veröffentlicht und erhielt ausgesprochen positives Feedback in der Presse.

1988 folgte auf Coroners Debütalbum »Punishment For Decadence« (diesmal produziert im Sky Trak Studio in Berlin, produziert von Guy Bidmead). Laut Gitarrist Tommy Vetterli war das eine natürliche Weiterentwicklung für die Band: „Wir haben uns mehr auf die Tiefe der Musik konzentriert, es war nicht mehr nur eine Demonstration unserer technischen Fähigkeiten. Die Band war ziemlich tight, definitiv tighter als auf unserem ersten Album. Insgesamt denke ich, dass die Platte etwas reifer ist. Es ging weniger darum zu zeigen: ‚Schaut her, wie gut wir spielen können‘, sondern der Fokus lag auf den Songs.“
Der herausragende Track auf dem Album ist „Masked Jackal“, ein Fanliebling bis zum heutigen Tage. Außerdem wurde ein Musikvideo zu dem Song gedreht, wie der Gitarrist erklärt: „Es ist das Stück, das auf dem Album heraussticht. MTV war damals für jede Band extrem wichtig. Deshalb ist ‚Masked Jackal‘ bis heute ein Favorit der Fans.“

»Punishment For Decadence« kam mit einem auffälligen Cover-Artwork daher (ein Gemälde mit dem Titel „Porte de L'enfer“), eine Idee von Schlagzeuger Marky: „Er kletterte mitten in der Nacht eine Leiter hinauf und fotografierte hier in Zürich das Artwork von Rodin. Das Plattenlabel fand jedoch, dass dieses Cover nicht ‚Heavy Metal‘ genug sei, also veröffentlichten sie für die zweite Pressung ein anderes Cover mit diesem Skelett, das Geige spielt. Jenes Motiv war eigentlich nur als T-Shirt-Design gedacht.“

Laut Tommy lief das Album in Sachen Verkaufszahlen ordentlich: „Anscheinend müssen die Verkaufszahlen befriedigend gewesen sein; sonst hätten wir wahrscheinlich nicht weitermachen können. Wir haben nicht viel Geld mit Coroner verdient, aber das Ganze hat viel Spaß gemacht. Wir konnten überleben und das tun, was wir lieben. Die Presse und andere Musiker mochten uns, aber wir erreichten niemals die breite Masse.“

Mit Musik von Kristian Ross und Real X spannt der Soundtrack einen Bogen von üppigen Ambient-Atmosphären bis hin zu cineastischen Orchesterklängen. "Burning Down Paradise", das sechste Studioalbum der NWOBHM-Legende Tokyo Blade, erblickte ursprünglich im Jahre 1995 über Fresh Fruit das Licht der Welt. Fresh Fruit war ein Sublabel von SPV in Hannover. High Roller Records legt »Burning Down Paradise« jetzt zum allerersten Mal als Vinyl auf.
Die Platte markierte die Wiedervereinigung von Gitarrist Andy Boulton und Sänger Alan Marsh, die das erste Mal seit dem Debütalbum von Tokyo Blade im Jahre 1983 wieder gemeinsame Sache machten. Die damalige Besetzung wurde komplettiert von John Wiggins an der zweiten Gitarre, Colin Riggs am Bass und Marc Angel hinterm Schlagzeug.
„Ich denke, alle zwölf Songs haben den Test der Zeit gut überstanden“, kommentiert Gitarrist und Gründungsmitglied Andy Boulton heute. „Allerdings war es eine schwierige Zeit für Hardrock und Heavy Metal. Der musikalische Geschmack hatte sich drastisch verändert. Das Album wurde in einem kleinen Studio direkt außerhalb von Marlborough in Wiltshire aufgenommen. Zusammen mit einem Tontechniker namens Nick Beer. Ich nehme an, man könnte sagen, dass die ganze Band »Burning Down Paradise« produziert hat. Als Hauptsongwriter hatten Alan und ich am Ende aber wohl den größten Einfluss auf den Sound der Platte.“
Laut Aussage des Gitarristen erntete das Album zum Erscheinungszeitpunkt unterschiedliche Reaktionen: „Die Meinungen gingen auseinander, einige alte Fans mochten unsere neue Richtung nicht, während andere positiver eingestellt waren. Und was die Kritiker an sich betrifft, auf die höre ich eh nicht. Meine Einstellung ist: Wenn dir die Musik nicht gefällt, hör sie dir einfach nicht an.“
Nach der Veröffentlichung von "Burning Down Paradise" gingen Andy Boulton und Alan Marsh abermals getrennte Wege. Tokyo Blade lösten sich (zwischenzeitlich) auf: „Wir hatten die Schnauze voll, ohne Unterstützung von irgendwoher weiterzumachen. Es war eine schlechte Zeit für unsere Art von Musik, und wir sahen keinen Sinn darin, die Band weiterhin am Leben zu halten und unsere Kraft zu vergeuden.“

Die Wurzeln der NWOBHM-Legende Tokyo Blade gehen zurück bis in die frühen achtziger Jahre, als die Schulfreunde Andy Boulton (Gitarre), Andy Robbins (Bass) und Steve Pierce (Schlagzeug) in Wiltshire unter dem ursprünglichen Namen White Diamond starteten. Irgendwann tat man sich mit Sänger Alan Marsh zusammen und machte zuerst als Killer und dann als Genghis Khan weiter. Die Doppel-Single »Double Dealin’« erschien 1982 und sicherte Tokyo Blade einen Plattenvertrag beim neu gegründeten Label Powerstation Records. Im November 1983 stand schließlich das Debütalbum in den Läden.
Gründungsmitglied und Gitarrist Andy Boulton erläutert: “Die Platte wurde im Wickham Studio in Ost-London aufgenommen. Wir hatten lediglich vier Tage zur Verfügung und es war ein Albtraum. Immer wenn wir fertig waren, fielen wir todmüde um und schliefen sofort auf dem Studioboden ein. Und am nächsten Tag ging alles wieder von vorne los.“
Es wundert demnach kaum, dass Andy die Atmosphäre im Studio als angespannt bezeichnet: “Wir dachten, uns würden wenigstens zwei Wochen zur Verfügung stehen, aber am Ende mussten wir alles mehr oder weniger live aufnehmen. Im Grunde genommen haben wir die Songs für das Album ausgewählt, die uns am besten gefallen haben zu diesem Zeitpunkt.”
Während die Pressereaktionen im Vereinigten Königreich, speziell beim Kerrang!, nicht überwältigend waren, wurden Tokyo Blade in Kontinentaleuropa von Magazinen wie dem Aardschok (Niederlande) und Rock Hard (Deutschland) bereits als die neuen Iron Maiden gefeiert.
Diese erweiterte Re-Issue des ersten Albums von Tokyo Blade kommt mit einer Fülle von Bonus-Material: als da wären die vier Songs der »Midnight Rendezvous«-EP, nämlich “If Heaven Is Hell”, “Highway Passion”, “Midnight Rendezvous” und “Mean Streak”, sowie “Powergame” und ”Death On Main Street” von der »Powergame« 7”, plus ein Stück namens “Machine Run”, das 1982 auf der Ebony-Compilation »Metal Maniaxe« unter dem Bandnamen Madame Guillotine erschienen ist und in Hull aufgenommen wurde.

Es war ein Coup, als Gründer und Bassist Lee Payne vor drei Jahren ankündigte, dass Harry „The Tyrant“ Conklin, der nach Griechenland gezogen war, seiner Band Cloven Hoof beitreten würde. Der ehemalige Jag-Panzer-Frontmann war der perfekte Nachfolger für Russ North, der für die Fans bis dahin als der ultimative Cloven-Hoof-Sänger galt – leider weilt er nicht mehr unter uns. Daher waren die Reaktionen auf das erste Album der Band mit Harry Conklin am Mikrofon herausragend. »Heathen Cross« wurde 2024 bei High Roller Records veröffentlicht.
Nun folgt Cloven Hoofs zehntes Studioalbum mit dem Titel »Never A Prophet In Your Own Land«. Wieder einmal ist die Gesangsleistung vom „Tyrant“ absolute Weltklasse. Lee Payne grinst: „Das Lob gebührt einzig und allein Harry. Wir können uns glücklich schätzen, einen so brillanten Sänger und Frontmann in der Band zu haben.“
Kontinuität ist für jede Band wichtig, und Cloven Hoof hatten in der Vergangenheit mehr als einen Besetzungswechsel zu verzeichnen. Diesmal nicht, wie der Bassist nicht ohne Stolz erklärt: „Wir haben dieselbe feste Besetzung wie auf »Heathen Cross«, das kann ich mit Freude sagen. Am Gesang der einzig wahre Harry Conklin und an den Gitarren Luke Hatton sowie Chris Coss. Dazu Ash Baker am Schlagzeug. Luke, Chris und Ash sind nun seit über zehn Jahren bei Cloven Hoof; sie kennen ihre Rollen in- und auswendig. Ich selbst bin seit 1979 in der Band, also sollte ich inzwischen eine Vorstellung davon haben, was ich mache (lacht).“
„»Never A Prophet In Your Own Land« ist keine direkte Fortsetzung von »Heathen Cross«“, fährt Payne fort. „»Heathen Cross« hatte seine eigene schwere und düstere Atmosphäre. »Never A Prophet In Your Own Land« ähnelt eher »A Sultan‘s Ransom«, doch diese Ähnlichkeit war weder konstruiert noch geplant. Es ist einfach so gekommen.“

Widow aus London (auch als Ritual bekannt) machten erstmalig 1983 im Zuge der NWOBHM-Bewegung auf sich aufmerksam, als ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum auf Legend Records erschien. Zu jenem Zeitpunkt waren Re Bethe (Gitarre, Gesang), Phil Mason (Bass) und Rex Duval (Schlagzeug) allerdings bereits ganze zehn Jahre aktiv. Ihr allererster Live-Auftritt fand im September 1973 im ""Café des Artistes"" in der Fulham Road in London statt.
Heutzutage werden Widow/Ritual in bestimmten Kreisen als Säulenheilige der originalen Okkult-Rock-Welle verehrt. Re Bethe hingegen sieht wenig Parallelen zwischen seiner Band und Black Widow, Atomic Rooster oder Coven: ""Ich glaube, wir haben uns selbst niemals als Okkult-Rock-Band bezeichnet. Ich denke, wir waren eher ganz normaler Heavy Rock. Aber selbstverständlich haben wir beobachtet, was um uns herum musikalisch passierte. In den ganz frühen Tagen waren wir sicherlich ein wenig von Black Sabbath beeinflusst. Ich wollte schon immer wie eine Mischung aus Black Sabbath und Deep Purple klingen. Das waren wirklich die einzigen beiden Rockbands, die ich mir überhaupt angehört habe. Black Sabbath und Deep Purple hatten irgendwie den Dreh raus.”
Als Widow (oder Ritual) schließlich im Jahre 1983 ihre Platte vorlegten, hatte die NWOBHM ihren Höhepunkt bereits überschritten. “Wir sahen, was mit den anderen Bands geschah”, gibt Re Bethe zu Protokoll. “Wir fühlten uns dieser Bewegung auf eine bestimmte Art und Weise verbunden. Die Leute haben uns oft mit Samson, Quartz oder Pagan Altar verglichen. Im Grunde genommen gehörten wir aber einer früheren Generation an, die sich bereits vor der Punk-Revolution formiert hatte und nun mit der Schwierigkeit konfrontiert wurde, Arbeit an Land zu ziehen. Es war schier unmöglich, einen Deal zu ergattern, es war sogar unmöglich, überhaupt einen Vertrieb für die Platte zu bekommen.”

1986 veröffentlichten Bassist Ron Royce (Ron Broder), Gitarrist Tommy T. Baron (Tommy Vetterli) und Schlagzeuger Marquis Marky (Markus Edelmann) ihr erstes Demotape »Death Cult« mit Hilfe von Celtic Frosts Tom Gabriel Fischer am Gesang (Fischer war auch für die Texte verantwortlich).
Kurz darauf, Anfang 1987, unterschrieben Zürichs Avantgarde-Metal-Pioniere einen Vertrag mit Noise Records aus Berlin. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte sich Bassist Ron Royce entschieden, selbst die Rolle des Leadsängers von Coroner zu übernehmen.
Das erste Ergebnis war »R.I.P.«, das Debütalbum der Band, das im Juni 1987 erschien und sehr gute Pressereaktionen erhielt.
1988 folgte Coroners Studiodebüt »Punishment For Decadence«, erneut produziert in West-Berlin, diesmal von Guy Bidmead im Sky Trak Studio. Die Band tourte in bescheidenem Umfang durch Europa, bevor sie mit der Arbeit an ihrem dritten Album begann.
Für »No More Color« (1989) reisten Coroner zum dritten Mal in Folge nach Berlin. Diesmal war Pete Hinton der Produzent, wie Gitarrist Tommy Vetterli erklärt: „Ja, genau! Pete Hinton wurde vom Label vorgeschlagen. Da er einige meiner Lieblingsbands aus Jugendtagen produziert hatte, wie Saxon und Demon, waren wir begeistert. Die Zusammenarbeit mit ihm lief wirklich gut, er ist ein absoluter englischer Gentleman.“
Der Mix des Albums wurde in den Morrisound Studios von Scott Burns in Tampa, Florida, realisiert, einem damals sehr angesagten Ort.
Der komplexeste Song auf »No More Color« ist vielleicht „Mistress Of Deception“; laut Tommy Vetterli „besitzt er definitiv einige extrem schwierige Gitarren-Passagen. Ich erinnere mich, dass Marky vor den Albumaufnahmen sagte, er schreibe einen Text über die Wüste. Das hat mich wirklich inspiriert, und ich habe den Song in ein paar Tagen geschrieben.“
„Die By My Hand“, eine deutlich geradlinigere Nummer, wurde als Single für das Album ausgewählt (und zusammen mit „Tunnel Of Pain“ auf durchsichtigem Vinyl als Promo-12“ veröffentlicht).
In damaligen Interviews erwähnte Tommy, dass »No More Color« das erste Album von Coroner war, auf dem die Band groovige Parts einbaute, anstatt durchgehend auf kompromisslosen technischen Thrash Metal zu setzen. Heute glaubt er immer noch, dass das stimmt: „Ja, durch all die Tourneen hatten wir gelernt, dass man zwischen den schnellen und komplexen Abschnitten einige einfachere und groovigere Parts spielen muss. Das wirkt live viel besser und macht auch das Publikum glücklich. Das Album konzentrierte sich insgesamt viel mehr darauf, Stimmungen zu evozieren, und weniger auf technische Leistungen.“

Im Februar 2026 von Patrick W. Engel bei TEMPLE OF DISHARMONY remastert und restauriert. Die Schneidearbeiten wurden von SST Germany auf Neumann-Geräten durchgeführt, um in jeder Hinsicht optimale Qualität zu gewährleisten. Die ultimative audiophile Ausgabe dieses zeitlosen Klassikers!
