Difficult as it may be to imagine, there was a time when Sun City Girls did not exist. Prior to the Bishop brothers teaming up with drummer/shaman Charlie Gocher to form SCG's classic trio lineup, there were various ad-hoc assemblages of local Phoenix-area freaks and weirdos – groups which existed only long enough to play a single gig, open mic or house party before disbanding without a trace. Hatched from this milieu was Paris 1942, a short-lived band formed by guitarist Jesse Srogoncik that included Alan Bishop, Richard Bishop and former Velvet Underground drummer Maureen Tucker.

Paris 1942 would play only four shows in as many months, but between April and August of 1982, the band would gather several times a week in Tucker's living room, where the group feverishly wrote and rehearsed with a kind of quotidian discipline. While P42 didn't release anything during their brief tenure, a 7" EP and LP (both self-titled) surreptitiously surfaced on the Majora label in the mid to late '90s. Until now, those two titles – as well as an appearance on Placebo's Amuck comp in late '82 – would be the only documented evidence that this improbable, serendipitous and magnificent band ever existed.

While those expecting P42's music to sound like a tantalizing combination of Sun City Girls' iconoclastic hoodoo havoc and the Velvets' primal drug-chug certainly won't be disappointed, Paris 1942 more often than not transcends even these nearly impossible expectations. Srogoncik's songs, in particular, are a revelation, displaying as much in common with the exuberant raunch of The Gun Club and the chapbook punk of Peter Laughner as they do any of the more obvious touchstones.

The group's foresight to document and capture this meeting of musical minds – a meeting as unlikely as it was short-lived – provides a missing link between the Velvets and the Voidoids, between the Dead Boys and the Dead C, between ESP-Disk' and DNA. Far more than a historical curiosity, Paris 1942 provides a fresh perspective on an embryonic and sadly vanishing US underground. It is music that blinks at the past and anticipates a thousand possible futures.

Another run of floor-fillers from Rozalla with ‘Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)’, JX with ‘Son Of A Gun’, Blue Pearl’s ‘Naked In The Rain’ and ‘U Sure Do’ from Strike follows and the side closes with the electronic acid house of ‘Killer’ from Adamski that hit the top of the charts and introduced Seal… and over on the final side, the collection moves toward it's close with stunning and enduring tracks of the era – opening with Soul II Soul & Caron Wheeler’s #1 ‘Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)’ blending soul, R&B and club rhythms to perfection, while Beats International’s fusion of dub reggae and house: ‘Dub Be Good To Me’ (another chart-topper) follows with its iconic bassline and leads us into the stylish and smooth ‘Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out’ from Freak Power. The journey through this incredible era is completed with genre pioneers The Prodigy with ‘Charly’, ‘Infinity’ from Guru Josh, and closing with ambient house, ‘Pacific - 707’ from 808 State, and the timeless ‘The Sun Rising’ from The Beloved.

Was hat es mit dieser ,Augendisko" auf sich? Man hat sofort ein Bild vor seinem geistigen Auge: funkelnd, glänzend, leuchtend, irgendwie speziell. Das passt auch ganz wunderbar. Dabei war der Auslöser für die ,Augendisko" vergleichsweise banal. Marcus Heider (als sein Alter Ego ,John Krempl" Kopf der Band) war nach dem letzten Album gezwungen, sich mehreren Augenoperationen auszusetzen. An sich eine natürlich unangenehme, aber letztlich auch seltsame und fast überirdische Erfahrung. Wie beschreibt man das Flimmern und die Farben, die vor einem tanzen, wenn man im Dämmerzustand auf dem OP-Tisch liegt? Richtig, ,Augendisko" trifft es am besten. Die ,Augendisko", die dem Album seinen Titel gibt, ist ein Sehnsuchtsort - bizarr, bunt, vielfältig wie die Musik. Und das Geheimnis rund um die Augenklappe von John Krempl haben wir nun auch gelüftet. Es ist kein modisches Accessoire, sondern eine Notwendigkeit bei der Real Life Bildschirmarbeit und somit willkommener Teil des Bühnenoufits. Songs: Wir treffen uns in der ,Augendisko", eine ungestüme und hymnische Rocknummer, die auf ein furioses Bass-Schlagzeugfinale zusteuert. ,Johnny gegen den Rest der Welt" ist ein Streifzug durch das Leben von Johnny, dem Protagonisten vieler Love God Chaos-Songs. Der bisher längste Love God Chaos-Song ist aufbereitet wie eine üppige, ungewöhnliche und überraschende Netflix-Serie, getragen vom Czech Film Orchestra. Der wohl bisher thematisch ungewöhnlichste Song in der Karriere der Grazer Band ist ,Im Kopf von Lisa Eckhart". Ein dunkles und groovendes Lied, das weniger Hommage sein will, sondern eher eine Unterstellung ist. Wer weiß schon, was in den Köpfen anderer vor sich geht? Egal, Hauptsache es ist ,alles wunderbar". ,Bistro d'Amour" ist eine schelmische Abrechnung mit den Ex-Freunden von Johnnys Liebster. Was tun, wenn gar nichts mehr hilft? Love God Chaos empfehlen ,Mach dein Voodoo". Nach der lässigen und zugänglichen Nummer geht es weiter mit ,Muss das so laut sein". Ein Satz, den wohl jede Musikerin und jeder Musiker schon mal gehört hat. ,Hoffentlich Henri" ist ein opulentes Weltraumepos, das abhebt und sich mit einem Textzitat vor den Größten verbeugt. Der Schluss hat es nochmal in sich. ,Alle gehen, keiner bleibt" beginnt folkig und mit luftigen Harmonies, ufert aber letztlich aus. Ein Song wie eine Matrjoschka, überraschend bis zum Schluß

Bret McKenzie ist ein Grammy- und Oscar-prämierter Künstler, der vor allem durch seine Band Flight of the Conchords und die gleichnamige Fernsehshow bekannt wurde. Following on from his highly acclaimed debut Len Parrott"s Memorial Lift, Baxter proves that this was no fluke. His 2nd album Floor Show sounds like it was recorded in St Paul"s Cathedral, with vocals added in the whispering gallery. Narratively, it"s seems to be about a disintegrating relationship, although this is no confession booth moment. Guitars float like ectoplasm, Wurlitzer"s spin beneath mirror balls, summoning the presence of spectral beings, swaying to luxurious, narcotic music that predates trip-hop by a good sixty years. Stand-out tracks include the single "Lisa Said", "Cocaine Man" and the wonderful "Francesca"s Party". The album was produced by Baxter, Nick Terry and mixed by Craig Silvey (The Coral, Magic Numbers) in West London in the winter of 2004 / 2005. The band are Damon Reece on drums and Mike Mooney on the electric guitar- both former members of Spiritualized.

Since their last album L’Oiseau Magnifique, Alice have spent time on the road — in cars, in trains, out in the open. Accustomed to writing outdoors, they slowly stitched together a collection of new songs. After two years of performing in clubs, bars, stairwells, carpentry workshops, activist agricultural fairs and roadside shoulders, they took their Oiseau Magnifique just about everywhere.
