A few years ago I took a journey to Europe searching for a new sound.

People along the journey had been telling me about this guy from Tropea, Italy called DJ Steve (named after his favorite musician, Stevie Wonder).
He's a butcher there by day, but at night he's the DJ at a club called Casablanca. I made my way to this tiny town in the south of Italy and found DJ Steve.
His 12 hour DJ sets opened my eyes. This guy was the real deal. He was playing dubplates, vinyl, cassettes, and reel-to-reel's. All special edits he had done over the years.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
In late November of 2011 DJ Steve finally made his first visit outside of Italy and came to New York. He came on my Beats In Space radio show and blew everyone away. It was one of the most listened to mixes of the year. While he was in New York, I was able to record in a few of the dubplates of edits he had done. Those recordings are how we arrived at the release of "DJ Steve's Special Cuts #1 & #2". With this release we also started a new sub-label for Beats In Space Records. B.I.S. Records, Inc is for any of the edits or bootlegs we might come across. Expect to hear more from DJ Steve soon.

Joey Negro is the most well-known pseudonym of master British DJ/producer/remixer Dave Lee. Under a plethora of other monikers including Jakatta, Akabu, Doug Willis, Raven Maize, The Sunburst Band, Sessomatto, and Z Factor, Dave was one of the first artists to incorporate disco samples in house music when he began his production career in 1988. Indeed, he was in the studio making credible and outstanding British House music when many luminaries around him were still busy getting to grips with their decks. In 2011 little has changed and Dave is widely regarded as one of the most commercially successful and in-demand artists on the global scene.

So what is After the void ..We Bang the Bomb of course with a lady in a thong surrounded by snakes and hand grenade's, obvious really! Having been away for some time it appears that a Light Sounds Dark spring is in the air. En route to their next destination (rumoured to be a dark subterranean world full of nasty mutants 'Danger electrified tracks' out this Summer) with arms out the window and the mothership roof down, it's full steam ahead and proper European dance music time.

Not really train spotting as before although a couple are a bit off piste like Malta's very own Ian Dury by the name of Iain Richardson rapping about sitting on a green bus! much more like it however are classic Italo covers of 'Big in Japan', 'Gloria', a wonderful new wave version of Falco's euro smash 'Der Kommissar' and The Thoughts massive German hit 'Wait a Long Time' sounding like some long lost Talk Talk record. Light Sounds Dark do some minor tweaking (going for that natural look) to big beast anthems Axodry's 'You' and Colme 111's 'You Take Me High' (early euro take on Chicago) and for lovers of something a bit more funky there's some groovy goings on from Kraut funksters Epsilon urging people to 'Leave The City' which might not be a bad idea if the water runs out.

Now they've got the messy business of establishing 100% quality out of the way, those lovely chaps behind the SLEAZYBEATS BLOG Dutch/Danish imprint Sleazy Beats Recordings make ready with their 10th and FINAL release in this series.
For SBR10, they've secured the unfathomable talents of Mr. Frank Booker. The New-Zealand based producer who Co-Hosts the acclaimed Hit It & Quit It radio show with none other than Recloose.
He doesn't put out much music (a handful of EPs over the past few years on class imprints such as Untracked, Japan's Wonderful Noise and Fine Art), but when he does get his hands dirty in the studio, the results are invariably exceptional.

Frank's chuggy, fuzzy, understated drums and driving basslines are some of the finest in the game, and he has found a way of weaving samples of old and forgotten soul nuggets into his productions that is neither obvious nor easy, layering sound upon sound and effect upon effect while still letting a track 'breathe' and retain the natural swing of the source material.
As it happens, the 'Fall Out EP' features some of Frank Booker's finest work to date. Title track 'Fall Out' is an irresistable uptempo peak time nugget that cleverly walks the line between moody deephouse and organic disco. Flip over for 'Boss', a pearl of a midtempo track with loads of oomph and drive that keeps building and building. On 'Points', the closing track of the EP, Frank Booker conjures up an infectious beatdown groove with a killer bassline.

Gramme spluttered into life in 1996, high on the fumes of 99 Records, ESG, Liquid Liquid, Factory's ACR, New Order & Daft Punk's album 'Homework'. Their ambition was to make raw, accessible and deeply pleasurable party music for those left cold by the tired and uninspiring sounds of big beat. Gramme and the Output imprint paved the way for a new musical movement and was influential in the early sound of New York's DFA and bands like The Rapture and The Juan Mclean.
Now, in 2012, this joie de vivre has never bean more apparent. Their first release in 6 years, EP2.1 came out in March and flew off the shelves, as did Hot Chip re-edits of classic Gramme tracks 'Like You/Mine' which was released on a New York bootleg imprint.
Now 'Too High' EP drops this June. This new EP on the band's own imprint Physical Release Recordings takes the Gramme sound to yet new musical echelons. 'Too High' is an addictive hypnotic, anthemic ode to the dancefloor. 'Headsore', a bleepy, intensely spirited whirl of inner verve being released through musical veins. 'I'll Make It Up' takes the pace down with a seductive clicky groove, oozing a lush yet melancholic vibe that will make the hairs on the back of one's neck tingle. And then there's 'I Can't Resist', a contemporary slice of post-punk funk heaven.

But you should definitely, ahem 'go for this' ! A top notch 2011 housed-up update of the 1981 Hall & Oates stomper

Human Woman is the new signing on hfn music, made up of two very promising artists from Iceland; Gisli Galdur (aka Galdur) of prolifi c Icelandic band Trabant, and producer Jón Atli Helgason (aka Sexy Lazer).

Hot on the heels of volume 12 and with a familiar Let's Get Lost face at the helm, volume 13 welcomes Jacques Renault aboard once more and he's jumped genres yet again! After the relentless house edits of his last LGL voyage this release sees him return to the familiar waters of synthesizer prodded orchestral disco for the first two tracks and a saxophone and choir led afrobeat gem to round things off.

Next up on the docket - we slow things down ... just a touch .. and welcome in a cast of new players along with a familiar face for the next installment on the Kolour mother-ship.
Some of you might recognize the name "Klic" from the wildly popular release on the brilliant Home Taping Is Killing Music release from last year that featuring the smash hit "Disco Music". Teaming up with fellow Londoner Lokiboi .. Klic makes their Kolour Recordings debut in sublime fashion with a couple of heavy, lo-slung joints. Remixing duties also see another Kolour Recordings debut with the talented hands of Frank Booker & join us if you will as we welcome back our old pal .. secretsundaze own Ethyl to round things out.

Razor sharp futuristic textures from the Bristol based producer, dropping one of his deadliest EPs to date. Stratagalastico is an absolute bomb of machine-made dynamite, dark and deadly for those who like to lurk in the shadows. Creepy shenanigans are most certainly the order of the day, but with that said, Marco ends the EP with a deep, melodic piece titled 'Bugs In The Virus', a transcendent composition that enriches the Stratagalastico experience and completes the package. The concept of climactic and chassis shaking is synonymous with Rayko. And his vision does not disappoint. It draws you in and layer by layer, this structurally more simplified midnight burner slowly but surely intensifies - through its reliance on chunky bass, trademark mid-point vocal introduction and heavy use of synths. It is both playful and a little bit naughty. Destination dance floor.

Time & Space Machine twist the grain and strip it back towards a more minimal mood with their inviting exploration. Whilst embracing the subtle elements of the original, this remix is quite transformational with its gracious representation and varying cultural influences. The clever use of vocal and instrumental interplay is particularly dreamy and enables the listener to feel as if this unfurls like sunrise. Atmosphere plus.

Greg Wilson personifies deep groove and his heady remix is all about its big, bad bass line. Opening with drum kicks that could send the neighbours into a tailspin, this is soon accompanied by flickering synths and haunting upper level harmonies. The chugging bass is complemented by the vocal introduction in the middle section and whilst grounding this somewhat, it also flies with an unmistakably sharp touch.

Rounding off this selection perfectly, Toby Tobias proves, once again, his capacity to take a track and make it his own with this stunning down-tempo remix. Tobias' interpretation offers an unassuming alternative. Seductive in its progression, it is a golden thread of lightness and beauty. The eloquently funky mood is enhanced by a more diverse selection of drums, gentle use of pads and trills. This is perfectly balanced with a waving bass line and a subtle, teasing vocal, ensuring that this is as smooth as silk and elegantly ethereal.

Finnish DJ crew Rollomatik break out on the Boogie Boutique imprint with a two track release that aims to represent the Arctic Circle fully in the nu funk/breakbeat scene. Formed of Hesh & Eaves, Rollomatik aim to rock the party and that much is evident on this cheeky 12" with "We Love To Party" deftly blending Will Smith with Chic amidst a melange of other recognisable samples. A similar approach runs through flipside jam "The Greatest" as Rollomatik lay down the vocal from an oft used Q-Tip solo joint over a heavily filtered take on Sister Sledge's most ubiquitous track.

Very welcome remastered reissue of the ultra-rare 1982 cut 'You Can't Have It' from cult NYC boogie label TNT Unlimited Inc. Mixed by the legendary Tony Humphries, this excellent cut is hugely dancefloor-friendly featuring a massive feisty vocal performance along with some top bongo action and a killer groove. Backed with a superb dubbed-out instrumental version, this is a stone-cold killer and deserves a place in any serious boogie or funk collection. Essential!

DFA has long been a favourite at the Bitches HQ and we were chuffed to be asked to remix one of our favourite acts, The Rapture. We certainly were not shy and dove headfirst into this mix bringing out the guitars and the lovely Beach Boy-esque harmonies twisting it into an indie-electro-house dance floor stomper. It's not for the wallflowers to be sure.

DFA have released this goodie digitally, but as we Bitches love our biscuits, we had to see it released on vinyl. And of course, we must ensure premium sound quality so this release is 45 rpm on 180 gram vinyl. Happy listening.

Limited reissue of two disco-funk classics by 70s super-group - WAR, renowned for their masterful blending of soul, Latin, jazz, blues, reggae and rock influences. On the A side you'll find the 7.30 minute promo-only disco version of Cosmic groover 'Galaxy', a wonderful technicolour star-spangled space-hop of smooth horns and hooks, blasted into the outer-funkosphere by a deeply delicious phat bassline, devastatingly groovy piano riffs and great dubbed-out vocals. On the flip, we have the mighty 13-minute Loft classic 'City Country City', a subtle blues-influenced obscurity taken from 1972 album 'The World Is A Ghetto'. Riding high on a blissful sax solo and laced with hauntingly mellow strains of a harmonica, this epic tune takes you on a soulful smoky journey through a dreamy land of slo-mo jazz and disco. Top quality!

The boys are back....back with another banger too. Definitely the best
little label doing the rounds around these parts of late. Vienna's Luv
Shack Records continue with the good groove venturing once again into
suspenseful House and Disco. This time the turn of LeSale to pull out
the big thick juicy drums and chunky basslines for which Luv Shack is
making a very respectful name for itself. Guaranteed heavyweight thump
when you flop the needle to the left side every time with the Luv Shack.
Original mix of 'We Go Straight Ahead' gets us off to the pristine start
with a huge slice of modern Vienna Disco Funk. It's tight, it's tasty
and the tempting vocal teases to the max.
Burnin Tears tear away some of the Funk but add the energy in a proper
remix style for 'We Go Straight Ahead'. The big trademark claps from the
guys get the thing moving, and I mean moving. Style all the way too with
textures and woven sound giving it the elegant tactile quality which is
missing from so much of todays music.
B Side begins with 'What You Get' in its original guise. Again, another
thumping humping banger with a cheeky sample of something to tease the
living daylights out of you and me! Nice prodding too of the synth
aiding and abetting this classy little musical mood swinger. And what
about that 'little bell' I definitely want that shit on my new bike.
And finally, Jakobin & Domino get a shot to remix 'What You Get'. 'Last
but not least' goes the saying. Or should we say 'leave the best to
last' What a great remix from the J&D, flexing their musical muscles
big time with some seriously deep House. Just turn off the feekin'
lights for this one and get totally lost and submerged. A deep serene,
almost tranquil groove, I was just as comfortable listening to it lying
down on a sofa, as I would be dancing upright like a nutcase at a club.

New Color Cover version

Two years in the making, with tunes recorded in 4 different countries, Can't Help It aims to be a modern prototype for further directions in future R&B and soul music.
The brain-child of Los Angeles born globetrotter Brian Gibbs. Born in 1978 to a Motown-addicted single mother. Gibbs absorbed the music of Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles and Sam Cooke before he could even walk. Growing up in California led to a deep rooted and abiding love for Disco, P-funk and ultimately Hip Hop. On discovering bebop and then free-jazz, Brian swore to apply the improvisational techniques to modern technology. Early works included eerie sonic predictions of things to come in the now globe conquering 'west coast beat' scene - including, on the infamous PCH label, a 13 minute opus that took us from latin jazz, to afro cuban funk and banging downtempo rhythms. Later Gibbs would move to Tokyo, turn to techno influences, and begin to release 12 vinyls at a frenzied pace! Since 1999 his projects have been diverse and undefinable, yet remained consistent and unmistakably original.

June 2012 brings Echo Park's 'Cant Help It' - the first ever full length album on Disfigured Dubz. Currently relocating back to the United States from Chile, Brian himself describes the current Echo Park direction as 'freaky bass driven hip hop and soul music with a touch of 'Nintendo noir'.

Following two 12's for cult Washington DC label Future Times, rising stars Protect U move to Vibrations for this four-track EP of foggy analogue house oddities. "Wild Drift" opens proceedings with a flowing piece of arpeggiated machine funk, shifting through a myriad of hazy moods, whilst "Ultra (Basic mix)" utilises a conga led rhythm and aquatic bassline in combination with dramatic lead melody which evokes the complex moods of Legowelt's finest. This track is revisited on the flip, as "Slow Ultra" gives a reversion characterised by its shimmering, intertwining pads punctuated by a rich bassline. The EP is closed by "Bright After Dark", undoubtedly the moodiest track of the bunch; foregoing the relatively rich melodies of its counterparts, it focuses instead on swampy atmospherics and an industrial squelch.

The excellent Lumberjacks In Hell imprint has served up some fine edits in its short lifespan to date, most notably from Chicago's Mutant Beat Dancer Traxx and the label's latest release turns to two other Windy City residents renowned for their collections and skills. Rahaan needs little introduction for the disco loving community with essential drops on Stillove4music, Disco Deviance and more, whilst Mr Sounds runs the excellent Bring The Heat website. This twelve is all about the A Side "Rainin Bleeding Boy" which puts a well loved UK EBM couple through the dub laden beatdown grinder - though DJs will get plenty of mileage out of both tracks on the B Side with "Flip Side" some supremely chopped up disco funk and "War I Declare" a stomping and heavily filtered bomb.

Hfn music launches a new sub-label with 'hfndisko' - an outlet for some of the groovier finds. Lightbluemover is the somewhat mysterious new artist gifted with the chance to kick start this new project.

In the 18 months since his brilliant debut release for We Play House, Luv Jam has been steadily building his profile with a number of releases, and now he returns on Vibrations with his first full EP of material since that auspicious first record. The EP's A-Side is a typically lush foray into stripped back, slo-mo house, with opener Tough Future utilizing little more than a 303 bassline and 909 kick to slowly build up to its raindrop crescendo, and "Rubber Band" employing a number a dreamy synths atop its tense, gurgling bass. The pace picks up on the B-Side with "Last Floor Hotel (mega mix)" upping the tempo and going into full on acid mode, with its furious pace accented with frenetic cowbell hits and industrial textures. The EP closes with "Elastic Band" a deeper excursion into jacking house, characterized by its flurry of handclaps, weighed up by its rubbery bassline

After debuting with an album's worth of experimental, ambient electronic explorations from the hugely talented NYC based Jason Letkiewicz under his Alan Hurst moniker, the Emotional Response label maintains such high standards with their second release. The focus shifts to Timothy J Fairplay, a UK producer whose growing discography is proving to be impressive too. Ears should still be ringing to his World Unknown released homage to Ancient Egypt's predilection for psychedelic drugs and its little surprise he's been hand picked for the debut release on Sir Weatherall's new vinyl initiative Bird Scarer. The four tracks that make up Somebody, Somewhere retain that dubby mid tempo poise that permeated Fairplay's output to date, though he seems to revel in the freedom to experiment Emotional Response encourages, focusing more on developing expansive patterns of synths on tracks like "Aim for The Yellow Sector" and the title track. Special mention too for "I Do Not Believe" which comes on in a Deep Medi doing digidub style!

This release has been a long time coming. All the way from Russia, Kirill Sergeev aka The Saint Petersburg Disco Spin Club, has been catching our attention for some time now. So much so we asked him to take the reins for the launch of the new Conservation Dept. label. He obliged with three absolute belters!

Hugo is back! Gomma records' Berlin posse is busy. Hugo Capablanca - resident DJ at Broken Hearts Club and man of Los Massierias joins forces with Swedish amigo T. Keeler. The second one for Gomma. They started with an epic Flamenco Percussion Disco track last summer - now they go deep into proto electronica. Dreamhouse... balearic you can call it.

In the words of Pitchfork's Stuart Berman, Cornershop may have made their name in the mid-1990s with a heady, cosmopolitan concoction of psychedelia, old-school funk, and mantric Punjabi folk, but their music also makes room for 1970s boogie-rock, cornball country, and vocoderized robo-disco. From their latest album, "Urban Turban" we present this fresh French filtered 'singhle'.
