18.09.2013

Mr. Mitch is at the forefront of a new wave of artists turning grime upside down and expanding the genre's possibilities in the process.
The Suave EP will be his first release with a proper promo campaign which will be handled in-house at Run Music (other artists we've orchestrated campaigns for include; Kano, Danger Mouse, Tempa T, Redlight, etc).
Mr. Mitch has already received early support from Mixmag, Dummy, Vice, FACT, Rinse FM and elsewhere. Influential journalist Joe Muggs consistently champions his music and included him on the recent Grime 2.0 compilation Muggs curated for Big Dada. Mr. Mitch produced the title track of Skepta's top 20 charting album Doin' It Again, has had his music included on a Fool's Gold Records compilation and - when not crafting exploratory electronic music - is busy co-running pioneering club night Boxed, where the instrumental-only music policy is simply, "no bars, just beats."
Track 4 of the Suave EP - Catford - is streaming on SoundCloud and has so far clocked up over 40,000 combined plays...

Rene Lavice - Insidious Remixes Part I

After several heavy-hitting singles on RAM, and a massive debut album release, Rene LaVice's name is well and truly scorched onto the international D&B map. Released in February 'Insidious' revealed the Toronto trailblazer's broadest badman skills and scored him massive support.

Now Ram Records returns to the album with two of their most exciting new signings. The first of a Rene LaVice remix series, this single sees both Chords and June Miller applying their technique to two of the many 'Insidious' highlights.

Chords takes the lead. And he does so with his darkest vision to date. Taking the icy unforgiving croaks and groans of the sub-soaked original, he's added more weight and brute force to the kicks and a trippier, more sporadic nature to the bass gurgles. All this is countered sweetly by occasional breezes of tantalising pads... Only to throw us back into the deep dark groove for more untamed bass fun.

June Miller follow with an equally satisfying take on 'Dark Passenger'. Paying respect to Rene's original demonically hypnotic Q&A bassline, the Anglo/Dutch duo apply their trademark metallic industrial strength dynamics. Charged with full spectrum muscle, and broken nicely by a short, sweet body-shocking halfstep drop, it's June Miller at their most savage and sonically succinct.

15.08.2013

Good things come to those who wait: the second release on the Crazylegs label finally arrives in the form of an incendiary solo debut from Nottingham's Toyc. That's 'toy see' — a name you're likely to hear popping up quite a bit over the coming months.
Fresh from guest appearances on Boiler Room and BBC Radio 1, Ruffer and Keyframe represent a bold snapshot of Toyc's unique sound: two dangerous slabs of light-footed, elastic bassweight that you may well recognise from the sets of Jackmaster and Ben UFO.

Backing up the originals, an old vs new-skool grime soundclash, if you will — 8 bar pioneer Youngstar and thrilling Belfast newcomer Bloom run amok with versions of Keyframe. And finally the inimitable Danny Native twists Ruffer into one of the most menacing pieces of dance music you'll hear all year.

Gamma + Hydro/spinline + Hydro - May Day/true

*Hydro is really making some moves this year. Coming on the back of two huge releases 'Celestine' on Symmetry and 'The Formula' on Dispatch. He teams up with Gamma of Spinline, and the Spinline collective for a 12' is much anticipated.

*A serious double A side release, both tracks are picks for the dancefloor purists. The anticipation builds with 'May Day' really bringing the warning sound to the dance, whilst 'True' really is the smooth operator. A class 12, and a great precursor as we wait for the dreamthief 4 project up next.

Optiv & Cza - Vital Signs/back To The Future

*Limited edition vinyl
*With experience comes knowledge, and with knowledge comes the power to create. And both Optiv and CZA have all of these qualities in abundance.
*Already established veterans of the scene via their output as Cause 4 Concern, this release sees 2 of the C4C members team up under their solo guises. Combining with Hardware to work together, to bring the best of the beats and the bass.
*The first of which is Vital Signs, a humming, resonating beast of a track, which builds itself around early helicopter effects, which are paired to a beat that slowly establishes itself. The action zooms in on a repeating bass note, which is surrounded by tinkling triangle sounds and some live - sounding drum rolls. Futuristic, funky and furious, this one'll have you itching to bust a move.
*The 2nd cut - Back To The Future sees classic neuro flavours erupt, as eerie synths clash with a ridiculously rolling bassline. See your way into the impending doom, as the duo take you on a wild ride. The track stays pretty low, as details are picked out in the drums and atmospheric elements. Things drop down half way through, but then rise up again nicely, as the bass reasserts itself.
*Vital Signs/Back To The Future readily demonstrates two producers at the top of their game. Be a part of the future signs, be a part of HWARE26. Get ready!
*Fully serviced to press and DJ's. Full support / feature report to follow.

Demon & Dcult - Frostbite / Sliver

Macabre Unit Digital makes it's third foray into the world of the vinyl press in the shape of MUV003. Unit commander Demon takes one side, fresh from his numero uno 'Boneyard EP' on MUD, and colab with Biome on MUV002, and the ever present DCult holds it down on the flip, having featured on the first MUV press. Demon kicks off with Frostbite, eerily shuffling into earshot, creating a threatening sense of anticipation with moody tones and teases of weight sneaking out amongst restrained drums. It snaps into the type of face-pulling neck-snapper Demon is reknowned for, electrifying stabs and growls sitting around precise, clean percussion, whilst being powered along by a juggernaut of a sub undercurrent. DCult's offering sounds like armaggedon, haunting and tentative from the off, before an injection of post-apocalyptic snarls add a sinister hint of what is to come. Sliver kicks into action, eastern vocals rise as the snarls dart in, each time with more brutal intensity, as the percussion marches forward, before breaking into an almost tribal vibe over driving low end weight. Macabre sounds!

12 vinyl only. The first entry into the Templar Sound white label series comes via Sydney savant Dro Carey. Carey's N.R. beat is the centrepiece of this vinyl-only release. The track is a menacing hybrid of rapid-fire martial 808s and uncompromising sub-low bass, indebted in equal parts to Black Ops and Mobb Deep. Grime don J-Sweet forges his own uncompromising version turning the instrumental into a brutal piece of 8-bar weaponry guaranteed to cause damage in the rave. The A-side of the record is reserved for a vocal of the N.R. beat by South London's Merky Ace with the MC riding the track with ease, his vicious flow effectively kept in check by Carey's brooding instrumental.

Dubkasm give us yet further access to their dubplate box and, after many years of anticipation, they unleash 'Jah Bible' on ten-inch vinyl for all soundsystem massive. For those who remember, this track became an anthem on the mighty Aba Shanti-I Sound during the late 1990's. Requested regularly at the legendary University of Dub sessions in London and always gaining an immediate forward! Ras Addis takes us through biblical history with his rasta reasoning before we move head-on into the realms of dub. All tracks are mixed by Aba Shanti at his London studio and this disc offers three cuts with each one plunging deeper into the chasm. The track Raw Mix is, in particular, soundsystem dubplate business to the core, extreme cut-outs and vocals echoed into oblivion it's Aba at his most raw.

03.12.2012

Continuing in a strong and revitalised form that has seen widespread recognition for releases from Synkro, Troy Gunner, Szare and Stickman, Mindset Records return with a debut 12' for longtime friend of the label, Elsewhere. Hailing from the same rural locale as sometime production partner Stickman, Elsewhere's infinitely technical productions bear the hallmarks of a studio obsessive, with production values of a higher level helping to deliver three tracks of a unique quality. With productions informed partly by seminal trips to London to stand in front of DMZ soundsytems, Elsewhere reworks the dystopian dread and power of that sound into something entirely new, with lead track Trippin already finding its way into the record bags of kkord, Lone, Troy Gunner and more. Bott Bott displays intense dynamics with a smartly deployed vocal and a ruthless subbass underpinning a ferocious UK funky influenced drumtrack whilst The Espers comes with alternating slices of rude UKG swagger and some subtle atmospheric work.

Katharsis - Suspension Of Belief

Re-issue of classic Katharsis LP
Limited vinyl copies in stock on red vinyl
Comes in a copy of the original printed sleeve with download voucher

KATHARSIS was a band from San Francisco, formed by Daniel Malson, Jano Sanguine, Mary Andre and Tim Vickers (from 1988). Daniel Malson also had a side project: Bast, that released a tape through The Happiest Place on Earth.

KATHARSIS was an industrial band with punk attitude, with power electronics touches. Their sound was about the fatness of the noise sound, the thickness, about the low frequencies... After a few cassette releases, they released their sole album in 1989 on highly influential label RRRecords in collaboration with industrial / avant-garde label SSS Productions. After the harsh sound of their cassette releases, Suspension Of Belief opens new sound perspectives. It mixed industrial sounds with more rock structures, not dissimilar to Nine Inch Nails meeting Swans, but retained the experimental and atmospheric sounds the band was known for.

Suspension Of Belief has been entirely remastered and is now reissued for the first time. Available on desire with the original artwork and insert, the first pressing of 300 copies is pressed on red vinyl...

Katie Gately - Katie Gately

Public Information search the West Coast skies to Los Angeles, to find Katie Gately, still in the throes of academe, playing at new pop forms. This record in July bloom is a bold and exciting taster of what is in store, around the corner. Six tracks of frightening ambition. A prime distillation in computer-music-pop. More alarming - this is her debut release, she has been making organised sound for just over a year.

Screech, crumble, gurgle, crack.... the opening track 'Ice' a storm of cluster tones and sequenced-bursts sets the standard. Then, to a potential Top10 smasher... gone mutant. 'Last Day' is the first time we hear Katie's voice, first looped and torn, then glowing, euphoric and beaming from deep inside a crashing-banging-beat system.

Similar patterns follow across this half-dozen. Fractured vocalisations, bittersweet harmonies, freaked alien voices all living, breathing in deep fried motherboards of acute computer programming and field sound. 'Dead Referee' finds Katie on a post-apocalypse basketball court, destroying waves of squeaks and crunches and cuts with a vocal refrain of high beauty, it knifes through the noise.
Then, to 'Left Half' the haunting reverb-calm before storm.... "I'm gonna sew your face to my heart", she whispers... 'Stems' closes the record in a riot of tone and interference and alien acappella.

Nu:logic - Everlasting Days (ft. Lifford)/we Live There (ft. Drs) (vip)

Having impressed D&B heads from across the scene with their searing debut album 'What I've Always Waited For' in March this year, Nu:Logic a.k.a Dan and Matt Gresham, are back with another two tracks pressed on the finest vinyl.
* First up, 'Everlasting Days' is a soulful garage inspired number, harking back to the haclyon days of the 90s with a catchy hook, lush vocals from Lifford and plenty of that Nu:Logic sparkle that we've come to expect from the Gresham brothers. This one is a guranteed charmer - truly uplifting, irresistably hands-in-the-air with that sing-a-long factor which makes it a firm favourite of all who hear it. A ubiquitous summer smasher.
* Accompanying this is a VIP of another gem from the album, the ever-popular 'We Live There' which brings in Mancunian vocal talent DRS for the growling, spoken swagger which dominates the track. Bringing together warm, rumbling bass with low-slung beats and compelling twisted, tech-y D&B rhythms, 'We Live There' (VIP) takes things on a deeper and darker tip than the original, showing yet another aspect of the expansive Nu:Logic sound.

Sei A / Falty Dl - Hyphen / Artemis

Part 1 of the 3 part vinyl series.
2012 sees Hemlock's 20th release after four years at the frontline of forwardlooking bass music and dark electronica.
To mark the occasion Hemlock boss Untold has curated a 65-minute mix joining the dots between the label's past, present and
future. 'Chapter One' weaves his favourite moments from the back catalogue with a series of exclusive material from FaltyDL,
Randomer, Joe, Sei A, Guy Andrews and Untold himself. The beautifully packaged CD will be released alongside three 12" vinyls
containing exclusive music.
From modest beginnings in the heady days of dubstep's conception, Hemlock - founded by producer Jack Dunning (AKA Untold) and
designer Andy Spencer in 2008 - quickly became a force to be reckoned with in the sprawling, and often confused, world of UK bass
music.
Since then, the label has steadily forged its own curious path, building an enviable back catalogue and garnering a reputation along
the way for zeitgeistdefining releases.
It also has a reputation for discovering incredible new talent. It was Hemlock that introduced the world to the James Blake, whose
debut release 'Air & Lack Thereof' saw the light in 2009, and was followed by his seminal 'Stop What You're Doing' remix later that
year.
As well as some phenomenal new talent, Hemlock has also been a place where established producers can find a home for their more
surprising, spontaneous or downright deranged music. Key moments include Untold's game-changing 'Gonna Work Out Fine' EP in
2010, Pangaea's jungle-inspired 'Hex' and 'Fatalist', and Ramadanman (AKA Pearson Sound's) seminal 808 anthem, 'Glut'. With the
likes of Cosmin TRG, LV, Mount Kimbie, Girl Unit and Funkineven also passing through their halls, the roster now reads like a who's
who of bass music talent.
'Chaper One', as you'd expect from Untold by now, is anything but your average mix. It takes as many twists and turns as Hemlock's
back catalogue and reflects the story of not just the label's evolution, but also the evolution of the music scene it spawned from.
Starting briskly, it jumps through percussive workouts from Fantastic Mr. Fox and Mount Kimbie, soon blunted with the bassweight of
the half-step anthems 'Air & Lack Thereof' and 'Discipline'. The section climaxes into the psychedelic organ studies from James
Blake's 'Stop What You're Doing' remix before gradually fading into an icy noise speckled mid-section.
Cosmin TRG's brutally sparse 'Béton Brut' crumbles into the muzzled chimes of 'Under' - one of Untold's most ambiguous cuts to
date. The panic reigns through FaltyDL's 'Artemis', picking up momentum into the metallic jacking 4/4 kicks of Sei A's 'Hyphen'. Guy
Andrews cements the groove with the epic 'Resistivity', morphing into a broken tribal drum workout towards the end. Randomer then
picks up the funk with 'This Train', before getting nasty with 'We Laugh, We Scream'.
The final section explores the label's fascination with reconfiguring the hallmarks of jungle and drum 'n' bass, with the rowdy MC
chatter on 'Fatalist' sparring with the rugged bleeps and bass of 'Studio Power On', and the sinister Reece synths of 'Motion the
Dance'. After the last onslaught the mix fades out to the calming neon glow of Nautiluss & Lord Skywave's 'Ultraviolet'.
With 'Chapter One' documenting their past and earmarking possibilities for future exploration, Hemlock looks set to fearlessly guide
brave listeners into the next chapter of uncharted frequencies.

Kaiju - Unity Dub / Rudebwoi

Stepping up to the plate are a freshly signed act considered by many to be a driving force behind the underground sound. Kaiju
recently teased dub connoisseurs with a handful of root marinated flavours on their infamous Rinse FM appearance. Kaiju's arrival on
Lion Charge is a testament to their versatile value and engineering expertise within sub-bass constructs.
Echoing the offbeat aesthetics of soundsystem music, LIONCHG003 is a hypnotic roller of dubwise riddims and dread-line melodies.
'Unity Dub' progresses under syncopated piano chords, and scattered horn riffs effortlessly mixed with accentuated guitar licks.
Exercising dub fundamentals, Kaiju place prominence on the drive of the bass skank groove and one-drop rhythm drumbeat. One for
the steppers.
'Rudebwoi', an extension of the dubbed out formula, opens with a classic reggae organ-shuffle before a vocal signals a vibrant flow
of staccato style piano chords, King Tubby guitar licks, and reverb-soaked horns sealed in a swirl of invigorating drum patterns. Once
again, Kaiju capture the Lion Charge vibe through smokey siren riffs and rugged trench town subs for good measure.

Once again Icarus Records releases the album in cooperation with Vynilla Vinyl, the label of Ghent-based record store Vynilla Records.

Stray Dogs

Stray Dogs aka Koenraad Ecker (cello, guitar, electronics) and Frederik Meulyzer (percussion, electronics) have been on an exciting musical journey ever since their debut album 'Intangible States' (2010). Balancing between electronica, dub and experimental music, they've constructed their own sound universe, in which attention for detail and texture is combined with a physical intensity that you not only need to hear but feel as well. Stray Dogs take you along on a menacing post-apocalyptic trip through a disintegrating no man's land.

'Wasteland'

'Wasteland' was recorded in a desacralised church in Antwerp (Belgium), making it more strippeddown, industrial and ritualistic than 'Intangible States'. The acoustics of this space were exploited to a maximum, after which all elements were merged in the recording studio. Percussion, cello, guitars and analogue hardware lead to a sonic result situated at the crossroads of ritual drums, dubby reverberating echoes and disintegrating orchestras. 'Wasteland' will be released on a limited edition of 250 vinyl copies.Later on in 2013 other work by members of Stray Dogs (also involved in Lumisokea) will be released on the Digitalis, Opal Tapes and Eat Concrete labels.

Anile / Lm1 & Kharm - View Catcher / Inversion

As warm summer nights go by, we are wandering from highest peaks to deeper downs enjoying that particular period, Absys Records presents their newest 12" vinyl filled with finest quality drum & bass music. Deep and atmospheric as the label had proven before, still make us move our feet and our mind in the tempo we all admire. Anile's "View Catcher" starts neatly, letting the listeners feel comfortable in their shoes walking around modern urban jungle. Overall lightness of this 6-minutes piece envisions things levite before the eyes of the audience, at the same time keeping us near the ground with groovy bassline and well programmed drums. On the flipside, we recieve Naibu's take on LM1 & Kharm track "Inversion", released originally in 2008 on Levitated Recordings. Lush atmospheric pads dominate sublime breakdown securing it as evident highlight, and the upbeat drum work and fierce bassline are Naibu's trademark, making the remix sound perfectly well along this year's top picks of the genre.

'Something About Love' is the perfect soundtrack to your summer.
d. REbORN - 'mARIO IN cOmpuTER HELL'

inside the deep depths of Nintendo land. With expertly composed 80's & 90's synths and pads, mixed in with 8 bit chops, drops, and melodies - this piece leaves you feeling like you're trapped in 'load-mode' with your joystick all in a twist.

Cut La Vis - Little Way Different

Brighton Reggae/Hip Hop supremo Cut La Vis teams up with UK Hip Hop Legend
Mystro and roots singer Mr Melody for an anthemic Re-Lick of the righteous roots
classic, fusing boom-bap hip hop beats with a skanking groove and awesome vocal
deliveries. Mystro's conscious lyrics and trademark silky-smooth flow perfectly
compliments Mr Melody's sweetly sung chorus.

4 big-hitting producers have delivered huge remixes. Marcus Visionary brings a dark
and dubby vibe to his tearing drum and bass sound, while Wrongtom's lo-fi, gritty
version takes it back to old-school, smoke-filled dancehalls. Soundforce's Weedy G
(Germany) re-licks it in a nu-roots style with a sub-wrecking bassline and The Dirty
Dubsters' stripped down ragga work-out keeps it fresh with it's shifting drums and
heavy bass.

* Drum & Bass legends release the 1st in a series of 10' vinyl album samplers taken from their new album Wall of Sound.
* It tops off a phenomenal 18 months which also saw the DNB trio notch up 3 UK Hit singles (What Can You Do For Me, Through The Night & One In a Million), a 'Nextlevelism' tour supporting DJ Fresh, as well as a Radio1 Essential Mix.
* It features 2 of key tracks from the album - Atmosphere & Revolution. Atmosphere shows them reverting back to their sound that was extremely popular in their early smash, Close.

* Drumsound & Bassline Smith - or, if you prefer, East Midlands boys Andy Wright, Ben Wiggett and Simon 'Bassline' Smith - are optimists. It's not surprising in some ways: after many years working hard in underground music, they're achieving unprecedented commercial success, and after two and a half years of work, they've just completed the album of their careers in 'Wall Of Sound'.

Maylee Todd - Escapology

Maylee Todd's sophomore release Escapology is the follow-up to her 2010 Do Right debut Choose Your Own Adventure. Borrowing the playfulness of her first LP, Escapology delivers a brilliant hybrid of genres ranging from space funk to boogie to alt-R&B topped with Maylee Todd's sweet art pop vocals. Tape Five - Geraldines Remixes

Kicking remixes from sunny southern Europe (Italy, France and Spain) - and TAPE FIVE itself with some Electro swing, Dub step, Club and
Deep house flavour that you would not expect from this brand! News Gazette: As we needed electrified mixes of the dance track "Geraldines
Routine from the recent album SWING PATROL, we also engaged the French "Grand Monsieur´s of Electro swing Bart & Baker" to do a version.
Staying in the morphogenetic vibe Fab Samperi and Pep Allegria offered remixes and it was an easy choice to put them all together in this
fabulous collection. Electrify the Gramophone: TAPE FIVE blew the dust from those old Synthesizers and plugged them in: What surprising
sounds we found! Beats not just for the electron enhanced ballroom - but even mainstream clubbing! The Songs: Geraldines Routine, one of the
dance tracks from the album "Swing Patrol", already in the radio playlists, got brand new revamp. See if you prefer the "Spin Around Radio Mix"
which recreates the passion and elegance of a Balkan wedding, the stomping one with some Dub step elements - or the Bart & Baker version
which went deep into House. Bad Boy Goodman, TAPE FIVE´s successful track which became a standard in the sophisticated Electro Swing
scene, now in a Barcelona Club style done by Pep´s Show Boys & Martin Dee from Spain. Madame Coquette, the song from the successful
"Tonight Josephine" album got dressed down in Italy by Fab Samperi, ready to stick her powdered nose through the club doors. How Coquettish!
The Remixers: Fab Samperi who did the "Italian job": "Originally I started this work of my own accord, as a ´DJ edit´ for my own sets. I sent it
over to TAPE FIVE who loved it - I ended up doing a proper remix for them!"

Crossing a Frozen Sea is the first release by Belgian electronic music project Red Stars Over Tokyo on Testtoon Records. His music is free-flowing, precise and emotional and references 90's Intelligent Ambient and 80's Industrial music. The 20-minute original is remixed for the B-side by the acclaimed Magazine collective from Cologne. They give the track a liquid bassline and some more forward motion, turning it into an overpowering and emotional trip.

Red Stars Over Tokyo - Melody Attack Remixes

Another set of prolific remixes of the Belgian Red Stars Over Tokyo. His 'Building Houses' has been re-imagined by Machinefabriek as a heavily sound-based piece that escapes easy definition. The remix has an improvised flow and a very natural feel to it. The track sets its own limits but crosses them time and again. A languid melody line on top gives a sense of emotional direction, but its rhythmic energy hints at the track being stuck in an echo chamber, whilst bouncing off the walls and off itself. Vindicatrix delivers two remixes of 'Building Houses'. His informed idiosyncrasy dwells through these two tracks, linking them to the darker side of Techno, UK Bass and post-rave culture. Both tracks have a broken feel to them, delivering their message in jolts and bouts, whilst ending things up with a strong sense of ecstatic relief.

Die & Jenna G - 1000 Soul Songs Remix

*Somewhere in between fact and fantasy there lies a place ... where sweet soul music can exist in perfect harmony with rolling drum and bass.
*Connecting the old to the new, the rough to the smooth, the soul to the groove. This song is a dedication to all music lovers.
*Die & Jenna G are both OGs of the DnB scene. Both can count numerous stone cold classics under their belts with Bright Lights/ Clearskyz & Midnight / In Love respectively. Having previously collaborated on the track Work It Out (alongside Clipz aka Redlight). It was long overdue that these to came back together with added penmanship from William Cartwright, for another game changing collaboration.
*There are a three of remixes for this. The first of which has had a healthy sprinkling of Addison Groove's magical 808 wonderdust and was on the first half of this release.
*In this second instalment on remix duties we have one of our favourite producers and good friend Break. Keeping the D&B vibes rolling but with a harder edge and of course Breaks super crisp production this is definitely heat for the clubs and raves.
*To round this package off, Gutterfunks' own Jus Now have bought the carnival to Ibiza. Taking the track down to 120 BPM, they have managed to transform the track into some sort of tribal House/Soca monster. You could just as easily hear this track on the sun-drenched beaches of the Balearics as on the streets of Trinidad Carnival
*This is a summer smasher already receiving massive support from all corners of the scene, from Goldie, Mistajam & Skream to Chrissy Chriss, Trevor Nelson and Norman Jay.
*'1000 Soul Songs' also made it to the BBC 1xtra B playlist, as well as receiving nearly 150,000 views in the first 2 days on the UKF Drum & Bass YouTube channel

J:kenzo Mixed - Dubstep Allstars Vol.11

*11th volume in Tempa's prestigious Dubstep Allstars series - the original dubstep compilation series - The only dubstep compilation to contain real dubstep tracks by the best current artists, and road-tested by real dubstep DJ's - contains no 'dubstep' remixes of pop songs.

*Mixed by one of the most prolific producers in the scene - A regular host on Rinse FM, Kenzo has toured in recent months in Japan, North America, and Europe - Packed with exclusive tracks from labels like Metalheadz, Exit Records, and Shogun Audio. - Four exclusive tracks come from J:Kenzo's forthcoming 'Bloodlines EP' on Tempa

*Over the last few years, a series of acclaimed releases through Tempa, including his 2012 self-titled debut album, have established J:Kenzo at the forefront of a growing wave of new dubstep producers. His Dubstep Allstars: Vol. 11 offers a fresh perspective on the genre - a vision of dubstep still defiantly focused on physical impact and sonic experimentation. 'There's a new wave of producers making more progressive music, and I wanted to represent that' explains Kenzo.

*The mix opens with a call-to-arms, as the technoid percussion of Kryptic Minds & Killawatt's 'Cunning Juncture' explodes into AMIT's aptly titled 'Don't Forget Your Roots'. Its dub-infused sound pays homage to the genre's earliest incarnations while also hinting toward new innovations to come. The diversity of Kenzo's selections shows off the variation present within this growing scene - all manner of influences are present, from techno and ambient music to drum & bass, two-step and grime. Indeed, many of these new producers cut their teeth in other genres before finding that dubstep offered an ideal shared space within which to experiment.

*The mix contains four brand new, as-yet-unreleased tracks by Kenzo, each of which takes a drastically different approach - from the beautiful, Blade Runner-esque synths of 'Enter Valarak' to the ultra-percussive whirlwind of 'Ricochet'. These four tracks will be released on the 'Bloodlines EP', available on 2x12" and digital from 15 July 'With this type of music you have to forget about big synth lines or obvious uplifting styles, you have to just go in there and just absorb it,' enthuses Kenzo. 'It's what you feel from the music, and how you feel in the dance too - you feel the impact. All the tunes are tried and tested, they work on a sound system, some of the basslines will take your head off. For this mix I wanted to encompass the emotion of the tracks and their heaviness as well.'

* Stronger and more potent than the most premium of Czech lagers, Prague's finest export Rido returns with the huge 'Faith EP'
* Four outstanding slabs of raw darkness that showcase Rido's outstanding production ability and pick up from where the epic 'Twisted' left off.
* As a complete body of work the EP confidently moves from the half time grit of 'Cockroach Funk', through to the sparkling piano intro of 'Back to the Future', the deep pulsation of title track 'Faith' and finally culminates in the evocative future soundscape of 'They Think That'
* Each tune within its own right is nothing short of outstanding, all combined in one great E.P to give a twisting snapshot of the all of the deep corners of current Drum & Bass Music, as you would expect from Metalheadz everything here is just as it should be and at the highest standard of brilliance.
* Metalheadz once again putting in a very special vintage year in 2013 and adding (yet) another milestone release to the catalogue, Rido once again bringing the goods bang on point and totally true to form.

Shogun Audio
02.09.2013

*Bass legends Total Science step up with their debut EP for Shogun Audio and as you'd expect from two of the most experienced producers in the game today, it's a fully fledged masterpiece. Drawing from their wealth of abilities Quiff and Spinback let rip with an array of styles and moods to set sound systems ablaze the world over with Shogun serving as the perfect host.
*The summer sunshine opening title track 'See Your Face' is a sparkling, laid back groove featuring their longtime collaborator Riya who drops her typically lush vocals over some crisp TS breaks and bass. Full of reverse pads, cascading synths and delicate pianos this still manages to deliver for the dance floor as much as it does those poolside moments.* 'Hush Ya Mouth' is the exact polar opposite opening with harsh, abrasive breaks and sinister loops before a drop into a heinous drum & bass workout that'll have you reaching for the rafters. Get ready for the gnawing bassline, engineered strictly for your pleasure.
*Moving on and 'Just Want You' keeps things grizzly. Retaining a very old-skool vibe the 'just want you' vocal paves the way as we fall smack into a full-on marching track with proper drums and a twisted b-line that wraps around your ears and doesn't let go.
*The final track 'Suspicious' sees Total Science stepping out of the D&B zone altogether for a super cool piece of darkening garage with Riya supplying the vocals once more. With this original mix coming on the digital package only, Alix Perez delivers the D&B remix to complete the vinyl release keeping things much in the same vein as the title track to soothe the soul and round off the whole for an EP of true excellence not to be missed.

Frankee - Black Heart / Wonderland

After two critically acclaimed releases on Program, exclusively-signed Frankee now makes his debut on Ram Records. Naturally, it's a massive release for all parties concerned... One that's sure to blow up dancefloors worldwide!

'Black Heart' lives up to its name in every single sense. We'd say 'it does what it says on the tin' but there is no tin, just an incredible sense of foreboding ghostly doom. Darkness soars through each eastern wail while the rich bassline drives deep into the groove, doubling up towards the builds for extra drama. Peppered with nuances of neuro funk, once again Frankee has shown an understanding of drum & bass dynamics that belies his young years.

For the ultimate switch-flipper, head to 'Wonderland'. The complete contrast to 'Black Heart', here we find the London producer paying the ultimate homage to drum & bass jungle's earliest rave carnations. With vibrant, euphoric piano licks, skippy breakbeats and subs so heavy they need their own passport, 'Wonderland' is a quintessential example of contemporary rave.

As for the emphatic vocal We can all agree with its sentiments. Music is indeed wonderful - especially when it's being written by the likes of Frankee.

*In the space of two short years, Kahn has made a deep impression on the electronic music landscape.
Starting with a debut on Peverelist's institution Punch Drunk, a rite of passage for any new Bristol-based artist, Kahn proceeded to release on a number of well-respected imprints including Idle Hands, Deep Medi and his own Bandulu Recordings. His music draws effortlessly on wide-reaching influences, touching on soulful UK Garage, bristling grime and shimmering, technicolor hiphop. Alongside his solo productions and busy DJ schedule, Kahn is also a member of the hotly-tipped Young Echo crew - a loose collection of musical collaborators, who broadcast marathon Ustream sessions from their underground bunker, and whose debut compilation is due for release in March 2013.
*Now ready to deliver his most ambitious record to date, Kahn has drawn on his rich and varied influences to build an EP which expands beyond grime and dubstep and into more classic Bristol territory, inhabiting a musical space which shares direct lineage as much with Nellee Hooper and the Wild Bunch as it does more recent tropes. Featuring a turn from grime legend Flowdan as well as Rider Shafique and Young Echo emcee J a b u, this will also be the first record to showcase Kahn's own vocals."

Lorn has always had a distinctive way with form and texture, from 2010's 'Nothing Else' on Brainfeeder to 'Ask The Dust' on Ninja Tune last year. On this new EP for Ninja tune he makes beats clatter and crackle with menace and powerful dark intent. Field recordings scrape up against guitars and and crumbling synthesizers, the drops are cavernous, radiating doom and drama. Throughout it sounds like noises are being pulled apart, each sound stretched, bent and twisted to the limit. That slightly unbalanced aesthetic adds to the majesty. 'Debris' is a work of sound architecture that is all the more incredible for sounding like it could all implode at any second. A masterful record of darkness and tension that occupies a haunting, hard-edged space all its own

Lars-gunnar Bodin/bengt Emil Johnson - Semikolon;

Originally created as a 6 part radio series in 1965, and released in 1966 by Sveriges Radio. This is the first LP recording by either of these composers. Recorded at EMS (Elektron Musik Studion), the newly established studio facility at Swedish Radio. This pioneering work did not easily fit in any category that existed at the time. Inspired by the work of Öyvind Fahlström (who was a pioneer of concrete poetry along with the Lettrists and Futurists), a few young Swedish artists began exploring new text based experiments. The only other artist releasing records of similar soundworks at this early time in Sweden was Åke Hodell who had released two 7" singles. These Swedish sound poets differ in style from their other European counterparts mainly due to their easy access to the high quality facilities available at EMS, with its own in house engineers and sophisticated studio equipment. Given the close relationship at that time between EMS and the national Swedish radio station, their works often have a strong narrative (radio art) quality. Semikolon is one such work. By 1967, Bodin and Johnson had together finally agreed upon a term for this particular style of sound poetry; text-sound composition. This term was then taken up by other Swedish artists working in the same field including Hodell and Sten Hanson, and soon became internationally recognised. The following year Bodin and Johnson in association with Fylkingen inaugurated the first annual festival of text-sound composition. This international festival, and the commissions it gave rise to, became a major part of the work at Fylkingen and EMS. The festival ran for 10 years. 7 LPs from the early years were released by Sveriges Radio and more recently Fylkingen have compiled the series as a 5CD set. Naturally, both artists were included in the festivals, but they also created a large body of work which appeared on many of the essential anthologies of European sound poetry at the time, including the OU Revue and Klankteksten (released by the Stedelijk Museum in 1970 to accompany their exhibition of concrete poetry), as well as other international compilations. Both artists have also worked in the area of pure electro-acoustic composition, and these works are also mostly available on compilations. This record though, is a collaboration rather than a compilation and retains a timeless contemporary feel that is shared with other radio art projects like the Hörspiel Heute series released by Luchterhand in the 70s. This new vinyl edition of the original LP adds an extra 7 minute composition by Bodin, also taken from the original Semikolon radio series.

Merky Ace - Play Your Position'

South East London's Merky ACE returns with 'Play Your Position', the second of his two-part mixtape, released on No Hats No Hoods 14th October. Since the release of the first mixtape 'All Or Nothing' Merky's appeared on an EP with Last Japan, featured on Boiler Room (again) and has taken to more stages across the UK and Europe.

*Merky's brought go-to producers (Faze Miyake, Rude Kid, Splurt Diablo and Deeco) as well as some new faces (recent Columbia signee Shift K3Y, Smurf Beatz, Jack Mason, Mr V, Jammin) to make a focused yet energetic set of tracks. The production team combine genres effortlessly, with the trap leanings of tracks like 'Strawberry Rain', 'Don't Know' and 'Naughty' merging with Merky's idiosyncratic flow and lyrical content to construct sinister urban soundscapes. There's a fair share of experimentation too, with the maddening 8-bit arpeggios of title track 'Play Your Position' building up over three minutes to create something frighteningly intense and warped vocals of 'My Lady' constructing an eerie, disjointed background for Merky to exhibit his flow.
*Recognised for his intelligent wordplay and catchy adlibs, Merky ACE has been MCing both by himself and with his collective Family Tree (other members include Ego, MIK, TKO and Shif Man, along with producers Splurt Diablo and Faze Miyake), for nearly 10 years. Over 12 releases later and he's garnered support from the likes of BBC 1Xtra and Radio 1's Tim Westwood, 1Xtra's DJ Cameo and Kiss FM's Logan Sama. His notable appearances on Logan Sama's After Hours alongside P Money, Blacks and Footsie have shown off his variety of flows while proving that he can consistently hold his own amongst some of grime's biggest names.
*Alongside radio appearances, he's honed his presence with PAs at Prague's The Roxy, Lovebox and Hip Hop Kemp festivals and Boiler Room while featuring on productions from heavyweights Starkey, Rude Kid, Preditah and more. To top it off, he's featured on Dizzee Rascal's recent 'Dirtee Stank TV 2' and Baauer's 'Day of the Dead' mixtape, helping to expand his ever-growing fanbase that stretches from the UK to the Czech Republic, Japan and Australia.

Tosca - Tlapa The Odeon Remixes

It's something of tradition for Tosca to get their albums remixed. Indeed, they once released a record comprised entirely of 13 mixes of
one song, 2002's 'Different Tastes Of Honey', variations on 'Honey' from 1999's 'Suzuki'. It's a way of keeping things fresh, injecting some
uncertainty into proceedings, knocking things out of balance in order to check how they should be re-aligned.
After releasing 'odeon' earlier this year, tosca comes back with 'tlapa the odeon remixes'. 'tlapa' meaning, This Life Arouses Pure Adventure.
This will be release August 2013.
The first person the pair approached was New York producer Brendan Moeller, who remixed 'Bonjour', turning it into a muted soundscape of
drifting synths and keening strings that slowly warms as a bubbling riff fades in. The choice of remixer for 'Stuttgart' was a case of obvious connections. The track already had a bit of a Latin feel thanks to guest Lucas Santtana from Brazil.
Other reworks come from Silver City, two guys from from Buenos Aires who live in London. They apply an '80s twist to 'Johnny Waters'.
LTJ Experience, an alter ego on Italian producer Luca Trevisi from Bologna, turns in an atmospheric interpretation of 'Meixner'. Perhaps
the most unusual remix is AFG's version of 'Cavallo', which sees spoken word passages thrust to the fore. 'That's definitely the most
leftfield,' agrees Dorfmeister.
If 'Odeon' was the sound of a band at the top of their game, still relevant after two decades, then the remix album shows they're still on
top of the music scene, pulling together well-judged names, old and new, to give their distinctive sound an equally distinctive twist.

26.08.2013

Having opened our account as a label with five interpretations of Youngstar's grime classic 'Pulse X', our first original artist EP comes from Birmingham-bred, Melbourne-based producer James Black, AKA Arctic.

The 'Pulse X Remixes' EP picked up widespread support across the board including radio play on BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra, Rinse FM and NTS, DJ support from B.Traits, Dark Sky, Last Japan, Brackles and more, and positive reviews from the likes of Fact, Mixmag, Resident Advisor, SPIN, the Independent and WIRE.

Following a well-received EP for label-to-watch Coyote Records, Arctic steps up to Liminal Sounds with three new original productions and a bonus VIP version that channel the visceral energy and raw experimentation of grime into potent, unpredictable and ultimately impactful club tracks. The EP also comes with the addition of a remix from Breen, who has been winning support from many of the scene's key tastemakers including Dusk & Blackdown, Logos and Slackk to name a few.

The EP has had early DJ support from Amy Becker (1Xtra), Brackles, Dusk & Blackdown, Filter Dread, Mumdance and Slackk, with radio play on Rinse FM. The EP announcement was premiered by Dummy Magazine and 'Seeps' was premiered by Sonic Router..

Dj Madd Feat. Marina P - Homeland / Follow Dub

After the resoundingly well-received debut release from Roots & Future, DJ Madd has been hard at work building more tough soundsystem beats for his fledgling imprint. A surefire bet to keep steppas moving throughout the summer festival season, 002 presents a couple of contrasting takes on the reggae dubstep sound with a vocal collaboration, 'Homeland', on the A side and the heavily dubbed-out dread vibrations of 'Follow Dub' on the flip. Marina P's soulful verses dance over Madd's tightly-coiled basslines on Homeland, delivering plenty of groove, dashes of colourful melody and skanking rhythms. The smoky, FX-heavy textures of Follow Dub take the vibe deeper, with pneumatic sub-bass pressure and percussive syncopations cutting through the haze; eyes-down dubwise flavours reminiscent of the early DMZ classic era.

Nic Tvg - Then I Disappear

Nic TVG is something of an anomaly within Drum & Bass. His tunes consistently surprise with irregular beat structures and his unique
'hand-stitched' micro-arrangements. These traits are very much in evidence here.
'Timelapse Of A Tuesday' tackles the 'Think' break with some fresh thinking. The breakstutters and skips as if time itself was
disappearing. While the breaks are almost schizophrenic the bassline is regular as clockwork and helps to reign in the madness!
'The Clown' is another track with an interesting step to it. Opening with a kick and clap rhythm combination, delicate atmospherics
and jazz tinged keys, the track builds with found sounds and switches into 'live' drums before eventually unleashing the drummer
half way through. A deft combination of the rough and the smooth here.
Flip the record over and you'll find two remixes by some of the most interesting artists in electronic dance music today. DgoHn is
well-regarded by Aphex Twin amongst others and he shows just why with a mesmerising array of drums, words, cuts and effects on
his remix of 'Friday Nights With Heather'. A weighty sub-bass tempers the skittering percussives and the track progresses
incorporating some of the brass sounds from the original track which eventually give way to a wistful synth-line. Breakbeat blues at its
finest !
The name Anstam has become well known within the electronic music scene over the last few years, with 2 well received albums on
Modeselektor's 50 Weapons label, a remix of Radiohead and a guest mix for Gilles Peterson's BBC radio show under his belt,
releasing something on Subtle Audio was the obvious next step (!) We've been fans of this producer since we first heard the early
transmissions on the Anstam label back in 2009 and this remix is everything that we hoped for, namely, breakbeat/piano/synth
weirdness !

Dj Marky & Invaderz - After Midnight

Deep in the long dark winter of 2012 / 2013 DJ MARKY combined forces with longtime friends the INVADERZ with the idea of bringing some sunshine to what was one of the harshest seasons in recent memory. Having returned from a drum and bass sabbatical the INVADERZ reconvened in their north London studio with plans for a well deserved return to D&B having spent the last couple of years working along side various other projects, like Dego, BUGS IN THE ATTIC and confronting various mental health issues and living in Canterbury. On some rare downtime from tour MARKY joined them and the result is plain to see here. Two giant slabs of warm home cooked vibes. Needless to say the support from all sides of the community has been overwhelming. Just feast your ears upon the tunes to hear for yourself. Let the sun shine on.

Forest Swords - Engravings

Forest Swords

Engravings

12inchTRIANGLE20
Tri Angle
26.08.2013

The project of the Merseyside, UK native Matthew Barnes, Forest Swords crept into the underground consciousness in 2009 with the release of acclaimed EP 'Dagger Paths' (Olde English Spelling Bee/No Pain In Pop) - a record so eerie and expansive that it touched on both Ennio Morricone and early Massive Attack, while still sounding resolutely unique. The release received critical acclaim, and - despite being just EP length - charted in numerous 'Best of' lists that year.
Debut album 'Engravings' is a rarity in electronic music - an emotionally resonant distillation of the past couple of years in Barnes' life, and an unflinchingly powerful body of songs: both euphoric and bleak, triumphant and heavy. Taking off where his previous work started, 'Engravings' feels more articulate, structured, and affecting. Beats are more pronounced, with the looser tribalism of 'Dagger Paths' replaced with a more direct approach to rhythm. Voices are also more prominent. Barnes spent time learning to splice his own and sampled voices together to create abstracted, elliptical melody lines, and rough snatches of ecstatic choirs interject throughout the LP, calling out in either desperation or elation

LPZ's Debut EP, '1983' (released on Body Work in May '12) was 'Disco Single of the Month' in DJ Mag and featured on over 30 sites from Dazed Digtial and XLR8R to Discobelle and Gotta Dance Dirty. 'Think For Yourself' sees them deliver 3 original tracks of raw house music that veers from the Relief'esque acid of the title track, through to 'Without You's, yearning vocal snippets and bubbling basslines. Before it had even been mastered or promo'ed, EP track 'Council Fonk' had featured in Maya Jane Coles' recent Radio 1 Essential Mix, whilst Posthuman's remix of 'Think for Yourself' has been supported by Daniel Avery on Rinse FM.

Scrummage / Nanite

12inchPRGRAM010
Program
26.08.2013

One of Drum&BassArena's hot picks for 2013, Stealth lives up to his name in every way... Quietly making big moves behind the scenes, grafting hard at his dark sonic art, earning his stripes, waiting for the right time to pounce on his prey...

Well the time is now, and we are all his prey. Going in for the kill with his Program debut, the London-based artist has made his move with precision instinct, leaping on us with two rich, rampant rollers just when we least expect it.

Inherently underground and immaculately timeless, both 'Scrummage' and 'Nanite' purr with intricate production prowess. Late night vibes for drum & bass connoisseurs, they carry the hallmarks longevity, offering something new on every listen.

'Scrummage' leads. Opening with crisp, cold atmospheric subtleties, a waspish bassline zips its way into the mix by way of crafty LFO. Fluctuating with angular attitude, the bassline soon becomes the main melody, pinging us back and forth with gritty cheekiness. As we roll deeper into the mix, we're introduced to haunted one-shot human elements and a wealth of sub bass that underpins the whole composition. Vicious without the shoutiness; like the genuine tough guys who never even have to raise their voice, 'Scrummage' is 100 per cent killer.

The icy vibe continues on 'Nanite'. Sharp, stark and steppy, this one's home to yet more creamy sub bass and pensive, synapse-snapping kicks, conjuring up memories of the mid-to-late 90s when drum & bass was really finding its own identity. Boasting a truly menacing vocal sample, the track title might have connotations of a sweet night's sleep but the overall message is clear: don't have nightmares.

Two killer workouts, one unmissable label debut. Once again, it's time to get with the Program!

Limited to 300 hand screen printed copies.
Louis Johnston aka Wanda Group flits to Brighton's Where To Now label with a couple of spellbinding, submerged trips. Paying tribute to his father and grandfather, 'Masculinity Is A Wonderful Thing' is, in his own words, "ABOUT HOW I LEARNED OR TRIED TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO BE A MAN ON THIS EARTH." In two parts he sets immersive spectral atmospheres fizzing with para-dimensional crackle and embedded with crude, cryptic and mystifying sonic signifiers. In 'We Held Our Balance' he juxtaposes finely layered worlds of hi-frequency modulation and field recording textures opening a beguiling, psychedelic space between, whilst in 'Gorgeous Lucio' he perfuses that metaphysical space with gorgeous Fairlight-like synth pads and empty house creaks. Loxy & Isotone / Loxy & Skeptical - Ancients (skeptical Remix) / Cylon Theme

Cylon boss Loxy and man of the moment Skeptical join forces to turn in this rallying cry for the seminal imprint. "Cylon
Theme"epitomizes the brooding space dub championed in Loxy's influential DJ sets for years. Eerie sounds and distant choir
chamber vocals build into metallic high hats and speaker pummeling kicks before giving way to the essential Battle Star Galactica
Cylon samples. The full percussive riddim drops back in with an armor piecing reverberated rim shot and a ten ton Aba Shanti bass
line. The track twists and turns with loose break fills, dub effects and dog barks keeping the head down warrior charge moving
throughout. Lethal!
On the flip, Skeptical brings his razor sharp touch to Loxy and Isotone's "Ancients". Skeptical utilizes seemingly all his now
trademark drum work expertise to masterfully craft one unified rhythmic drum bed out of a huge pallet of percussive elements.
Stomping half step kicks, Natty Congas, reverberated wood blocks, reversed samurai swords, and chopped sections of the Ice Age
break mold together with Photek like precision. If Skeptical's clinical approach to the beats on this track nods to late 90's Rupert
Parkes, his bass line influence is gazed firmly upon the Water House Dub of Digital's output from the same period.
Loxy's keen ear for the future sounds of Drum & Bass, fueled by Skeptical's limitless production chops reminds D&B heads the world
over that the imprint with the robot head as its logo is back to the business of leading the way forward for the whole scene.

23.04.2013

Funken presents berlin based solo clarinet-player and performer Andreas Ernst aka RANDWEG along with the first album EQUISETALES. RANDWEG portrays the theme of a journey that moves (and represents a thread between) while sketching the tiny little things beside the pathway. Following Andreas Ernst's debuts tracks and cooperations with Ellen Allien on Sool, Der Dritte Raum's SWING BOP and his live appearances with the electronic act Der Dritte Raum, he presents us nine tracks on EQUISETALES with a Krautrock and Jazz affair - coupled with ethereal sonic environments, and a surprising variety of sounds that come from his clarinet. It could be said that EQUISETALES is carefully sequenced to a narrative structure: beginning with ‚ARMY OF ANTS' a 5/4 time signature track that almost visualises the vitality of formicary and then ending in the mellow wilderness of ‚YOFA.' RANDWEG utilizes little, electronic instruments. Clarinet and the natural resonances of organic materials (usually by way of the clarinet-play or home-made contraption) become his main instruments, and as his live shows often attest to, Andreas Ernst can turn almost the full audience into a woodwind capable of producing beautiful music.

Aspect & Gremlinz / War - Armshouse / Makashi

Remaining permanently on the precipice of upfront, intelligent drum and bass, Demand Records have had a storming few years at the
forefront of the scene.
Shaping the brand new talents of upcoming producers like Ed:it, RoyGreen & Protone, Pennygiles, LSB and Heavy1, Demand has
also become a home from home for revered musicians at the top of their game. Basing the label's musical ethos around expertly
crafted sounds that command attention no matter who created them has led to a die hard following and a truly impressive back
catalogue.
This, Demand Records' first vinyl release of 2013, pushes together two standout tracks from Aspect and Gremlinz and newcomer
War.
Producing perhaps their strongest work when collaborating, both Aspect and Gremlinz attract the attentions of the higher ranks with
every release. 'Armshouse' does not disappoint, with devastating jungle breaks scarring the surface of a deep, rolling sub. Tight and
rolling, this is engineered for the dancefloor, the darker and dirtier the better.
War's 'Makashi' takes those malevolent bassy threats and adds them to the framework of an atmospheric stepper. Shaking up the
percussion to a blur and adding ambient touches, it's darkly addictive and full of disconcerting space.
DJ support comes from all across the dj circuit. Marcus Intalex, Lenzman, Spectrasoul, Marky, Bailey, DJ Die, Shy Fx and Goldie are
only a few to mention.

Narratives Music returns with release number five and with it a special collaborative single that brings some of Drum & Bass' biggest
names together to create one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year so far. With album projects on Exit Records and Non

and most forward thinking labels. This coming together with label owners Blocks & Escher has forged two highly contrasting but
intrinsically linked tracks.
The A Side sees the Narratives owners take on Loxy & Resound to create the tag team, melody led dancefloor effort, 'Monsters'.
Solid breaks, pads and retro synth chords lead into a hushed breakdown before firing off into a cauldron of percussion, subs and
wrenching reese edits. Never a label to stick to a formula, this track progresses into a different 'monster' altogether in the second half;
enfusing the intro's melodies with a new bassline that takes it to a more euphoric and meditative climax. With DJ Friction dropping
this track as a 'world exclusive first play' on his BBC Radio 1 show and D Bridge calling it a 'retro throwback for the future' on his
Rinse FM show, support has come thick and fast.
Continuing with the retro nod to real synths and melody, the flip pits Auxiliary head honcho ASC against Blocks & Escher in the ever
evolving 'Heliocentric'. This track welds the collaborators sounds firmly together, trademark breaks, ambiences and basses provide
the canvas for the constantly progressing musical motifs, pulsing fx and soaring chords. Vastly different in terms of execution and
mood but inimitably the sound we know from Narratives Music.
DJ Support includes: Goldie, Friction, Loxy, dBridge.

Dabs Feat. Mc Kwality / Mortem - Skull & Bones/hourglass

*Horizons 67 is a treat for all lovers of quality, in depth drum & bass music, and comes courtesy of Italian bass junkie Dabs. His funky, driven d&b has found acclaim across the world, from his native land, throughout Europe, and over to the US and Australia. Releases on Dispatch, Citrus and Horizons have secured him regular bookings right across the drum & bass universe. Since first releasing in 2007, Dabs has established his name at the forefront of the new skool, teaming up on many occasions with the likes of Cern, Ant TC1 and Cause4Concern. It's safe to say that Dabs is surefire hot right now, and this comes across in spades on his new 12' for Horizons.
*Skull & Bones kicks us off, with its funky, lilting intro, which drops into some rolling Eastern effects. Bass is never far away, underpinning MC Kwality's deep, resonating rhymes. Things get minimal after the intro, with booming pads taking the helm, along with continued percussion and mini-breaks. The atmosphere is menacing, whilst maintaining musicality. Skull & Bones is pure soundsystem fodder, ready to wreck any sound, anywhere. Get ready to hear this one at all the festivals this summer.

Ipman - Persistent Dread / Signal Moti

Ipman has established himself as a force to be reckoned with over the last couple of years, bringing a lethal combination of unfaltering creative freshness and no-nonsense soundsystem pressure to the table. His music is held in high regard by Kryptic Minds, and this August sees them welcome Ipman to the Osiris Music UK crew to drop two blackened cuts of bruising tech-edged weaponry for the imprint's 32nd release. The results are unreservedly dark and punishing, with 'Persistent Dread' driven by hypnotising sub bass body-blows that punch beneath a jagged swell of menacing sound design and mazing glitch melodies. The flip features the fierce rolling beats of 'Signal Motion', a lurching stomper that hits hard with chest-caving intent; deft snarls of mechanised snyths and titanium-grade kicks accent waves of deep dread frequency. A monstrous debut Osiris 12' from Ipman, as both label and artist continue to make serious moves in 2013.

Ken Camden - Space Mirror

Ken Camden

Space Mirror

12inchKRANK180LP
Kranky Records
20.08.2013

*This is the second solo album from Ken Camden who lives and works in Chicago. He also plays in the Implodes sound quartet. *Space travel is the dream of many and the reality of few. Since Yuri Gagarin rst shed the bonds of earth gravity in 1961, only about 500 humans have made the trip beyond the atmosphere. *Ken Camden travels to space while still grounded on terra rma. His vessel of choice is a guitar and some effects with which he journeys on fantastical expeditions and surveys the biggest territory of all, the one between your ears. *The glimmering sound elds he forms could be a soundtrack to an epic 60's science-ction lm, or a long forgotten grade school educational lm strip explaining how humans would be living on Mars early in the 21st century. *Camden's narrative rejects the dominant dystopian view of the future and posits that there are great voyages yet to be made in inner and outer space. *The album forms a gravity-free environment in which the listener is suspended, enhancing an aural excursion to the outer reaches of the musical Kosmos. *Press quotes for Lethargy & Repercussions: 'Transcendence achieved.' Tiny Mix Tapes 'It's an album that, although it's only been recorded once, feels forever embedded in the present tense when you listen to it.' Attn Magazine 'Ken Camden fuses the mystery of Eastern scales with Krautrock and Karl Stockhausen inspired themes, yet his sound remains futuristic.' Bearded 'Awesome record of shimmering, electronically modied solo guitar music. The pulsing, gated rhythms do have a certain (k) / (c) luster that reminds me of Achim Reichel and / or Steve Hillage, but the sound- palette is decidedly contemporary, with endless synchronized delays & comb lterings making the proceeding just so rich & dense.' Lynx - Therapy / Feelin Me

Lynx appears again on the Warm Communications for his second helping of funk fueled drum & bass that he does so well. Having a
reputation for razor sharp production and always pushing boundaries with his music, Lynx is no newcomer to the scene. 'Therapy' is
one of Lynx's more rougher tunes. Heavy stepping drums and punishing bass stabs accompany the sinister vibe when it gets going.
'Feelin' Me' sees Lynx teaming up again with Hellrazor for uplifting amen affair. Vocal treatments weave in and out of a very
interesting take on the amen break. If you like you're drum & bass with that rough & smooth style, then this is the one for you!

Makoto - Souled Out Remixed Album Sampler

Taken from "Souled Out Remixed" album which brings a new perspective to Makoto's 2011 album "Souled Out" by featuring remixes
from Makoto himself, Lenzman, Random Movement, Sinistarr, Ena, Bun and Jabberloop.
A. Girl I'm Running Back 2 U feat. Christian Urich - Random Movement Remix: Marking a departure from the 130BPM, 80's disco
style of the original version from Makoto's last album Souled Out, this remix ups the energy level from the beginning with Random
Movement's super sharp drum beats, bringing out a drum n' bass vibe all whilst preserving the trade mark clear 80's-sounding synth,
guitar sounds, and Tortured Soul front man Christian Urich's soulful vocals. The baseline will give you goosebumps when it first
comes in, but continues throughout with a bouncy groove. This is definitely one tune which will surely get the dance floor going with
its upbeat energy!
AA.Woe feat. Deeizm - Lenzman Remix: This remix is exactly the high-quality work one would expect from Metalheadz soul boy
Lenzman. The soundscape of lush synths and his trade mark deep, smooth bass line fits perfectly with Deeizm's vocal and lyrics. It
captures the emotional and soulful essence but still retains an energetic groove, something that only Drum'n' Bass can do.

Mortem - Bring It Down / Malfunction

Bringing intelligently dark drum and bass to the masses is a difficult job, but somebody's gotta do it. This time Mortem takes
Demand's hot seat to encourage two tracks with the hard-hitting firepower and sub pressure of a depth charge.
'Bring It Down' has Mortem's deep-driven grooves stamped all over it, matching heavily contorted bass with hyper speed percussion
to give an unsettling sense of uneven, bottom-heavy textures.
Pushing dread-filled atmospherics through the ringer is one of Mortem's specialities, and this track excels in bringing out his dark
side in a format that's ready-built for the dancefloor.
Utilising old school flavours for 'Malfunction' while maintaining that technical bite, writhing rhythms are sucked in through his unique
sampling vortex to create a track that's all about movement. Multilayered and thick with attitude, its behemoth of a bassline is barely
contained by intricately woven techy percussion.
As one of drum & bass' most reliable sources of prolific high quality, Mortem rises above the rest time and again with his unique take
on deep, intelligent beats. This release showcases his love for depth, texture and movement but also his capacity for creativity, which
comes in droves.
Both tracks are available on Demand Records 12' and Digital Download.

There is music that's made from the outside looking in. The textures are vibrant and the beats bang, but there's a hollow radiance at the core. It's pantomime. Then there's Los Angeles' Alfred Darlington aka Daedelus, who has released a dozen albums in a dozen years straddling countless sub-genres. They're united by his insistence on letting his emotions guide the blueprint.

If you've listened to his music, you understand. There is a balance between the direct and the obtuse that can't be articulated in words. This is part of the subtext for Drown Out, Daedelus' most elegiac album. His debut for Anticon is a heart-on-sleeve meditation devoted to loss, coded language, and the maddening failures of communication. And yet you can still bob your head to it.

"Music can be this ultimate form of poetry—a place to express huge ideas and a whole range of emotion in a few minutes,' Daedelus, says. 'But it can fall short because no one can quite share in the experience as much as you feel yourself. Someone can empathize, but your melancholy ultimately rests in you. Title the songs, name the album, but the music is what speaks in the end." Perfectly imperfect.

There's a sadness that courses through Drown Out. During its gestation, Daedelus grappled with deaths of his grandmother and close friend and collaborator, Austin Peralta, as well the debilitating illness of another close family member forced him to
take a sabbatical from touring. The grief is exorcised not through overwrought builds and releases, but through quiet ripples and agnostic hymnals—a winding and unraveling of nerves.

It can be alternately intense or mellow, melancholy or ebullient, danceable or introspective. Genres ransacked and sublimated include 90s West Coast gangsta rap, rave, classical, jazz, footwork, juke, and the heavy beats that crop up out of the Low End Theory. There are neither speed limits nor straight paths, but there's always a voice and a roadmap.

'I want the sound to be an emotion,' Daedelus says. 'When there's a sample it should relate the subject material. No matter if it's a little obtuse at times; the feelings are so murky.'

You'll hear the sounds of skateboards clattering, the chirps of crickets, even drying eyes. There is secreted fragments of morse code and other musique concrète kicking up dusty grooves. As well seraphic vocals and lively instrumentation. The album feels like a reckless encounter when no one is watching—when you know that you're really alone, awkward on the dance floor. The album feels like wildly encountering a crowded room with reckless dances, with no fear towards their awkward angles.

'Everyone deals with death and departure in their own way. For me, it started to stew and manifest itself in sound. Almost ridiculous to try to express because of how jagged it feels, it's easier to face through music,' Daedelus says. 'There was a longing to express myself louder then the grief. This is the album that I needed to make.'

Dave Aju & The Invisible Art T - Look Out Above Ep

Subtle but never subdued, Dave Aju's "Look Out Above" continues his practice of aural alchemy, reconciling genres and eras in distinct, versatile elixirs of House. Each track allows ears and feet to glide through a menagerie of electro, jazz, chill and funk, where the elements are in harmony, enabling cross-genre mixes with ease.

The subtle, smooth elements of the title track, "Look out Above" blend effortlessly into a dense, lush sonic cocktail. The raspy refrain and jazz splashes creep in at turns, adding spice to the mix that makes it all the more hypnotic, not anesthetic. "Good Gawd" is decidedly upbeat, with a straightforward and propulsive groove, a bass line that smolders beneath riffs that shimmer, punctuated with funky hoots and hooks that cinch it all together. We finish off with the sensuous eccentricity of "Fall," whose lilting voices, grimy grind, and space-age arpeggios come together in surprisingly smooth way, staying balanced and focused despite diffuse influences.

*Following on your work as one of the twin pioneers of Glaswegian radge-rock in Arab Strap can't be an easy task. Aidan clearly has had other ideas, quite different ideas, and most of them comprise his solo project release via his alter ego, Lucky Pierre

*In these recordings, L. Pierre pays an affectionate tribute to the wear and tear of overplayed vinyl; the hiss, scratch and pop of records long loved but worn down. It's the sound of survival, the echoes of a life lived well; moth eaten music of dasness and resilience, of beauty and backbone.

*'Lucky' Pierre's musical training began at the age of three in his family flat in the quiet village of Camelon in the Falkirk District of Central Scotland. As he ate with his grandfather on a damp, cold, mid-1970s morning, the young boy was deeply moved by the song that flowed from their cheap tinny radio. There was something profoundly powerful about Julie Covington's rendition of Don't Cry For Me Argentina that Pierre was yet too young to comprehend, but this serendipitous moment led to a lifelong pursuit of drama, strings and loveliness. After a spell of numerous dalliances with songwriting, performance and a generous array of emotional stimulants, it was a mere twenty-four years later that saw 'Lucky' release the first fruit of these passions, the wryly titled Pierre's Final Thought, in the first year of the new century. He now lives in Scotland's largest city, Glasgow, where his myriad enthusiasms are often sated but never diminished.
