Phonica Special Editions' first release for 2013 comes courtesy of new signing Sad City. Northern Irish born, Glasgow-based Gary Caruth might not be a household name just yet, but with an EP on cult US imprint Underwater Peoples already under his belt, it's safe to say he's destined for great things.
His release for our Special Editions offshoot, is a magnificent four tracker of swirling synths, subtle detailing and melodic bliss. It kicks off with the reverb-drenched, hazy atmospherics of 'Polymath' and the trippy glockenspiel-inspired melodies of 'Easing' which recalls some of Four Tet's early output (definitely a good thing in our books!). Then it's straight over to the dream-like 10 minute journey that is 'What I Talk About', with the EP rounded off perfectly with the Steve Reich-esque title track, 'You Will Soon Find That Life Is Wonderful'.

*Factory Benelux presents the first CD edition of In Movimento, the debut mini-album by Italian ambient funk group Surprize, originally released by Factory Benelux in April 1984.
*Formed in Bologna in 1980, Surprize issued two singles in Italy (Nu-Clear Dance and The Secret Lies In Rhythm) before supporting New Order on tour, and joining Factory Benelux in 1983. That same year the sextet travelled to Manchester to record mini-album In Movimento at Revolution Studios, produced by Bernard Sumner of New Order and Donald Johnson of A Certain Ratio. Surprize also played shows with New York hipsters Konk; three members later formed Slava Trudu!!, a conceptual art project produced by Yello.

After five years of releasing EPs and singles across a raft of labels including Argon, Ramp and his own Signal Life,
Finnish producer Desto returns to Rwina to deliver his first full length album, 'Emptier Streets'. As with his previous
releases on the Dutch label, Desto strips the music back to its bare-bone essentials, fulfilling the album's title with a
sound that's spacious and eerie, bleak and punishing yet still offers warmth in its apparent coldness. Stylistically the
album is most obviously aligned with the aesthetics of Dirty South hip hop and the dubstep diaspora, deploying
booming drums, rolling hats and cold synthetic melodies and voices inside cavernous sonic landscapes. Rather than
simply rehashing styles Desto draws from his own surroundings to make Emptier Streets play out like the soundtrack
to a dark city tale across its twelve tracks. A city full of tall skyscrapers surrounded by dark alleyways, night time
characters shrouded in shadows, empty warehouses where the raves aren't quite what you imagine them to be. You
can feel this cinematic quality on 'Discolated City', where a simple interplay between pitched kick drums and
modulated melodies is all it takes to create a hypnotic vibe. The title track features a rare use of vocals, stuttered and
effected into something alien, set against icy melodies on a solid bed of bass kicks and syncopated snares. 'Glottal
Stops' plays with a slightly disturbing melody made of guttural sounds over a relentless kick assault while '4 A.M'.
starts old school before switching into one of the album's most anthemic productions. 'Drainpipe' shows off Desto's ability to pull emotions from the listener even without any drums, winding things down before 'Healing' closes the
album with one last energetic run through the city, coming across like the bastard child of Burial and Mala. 'Emptier
Streets' takes the sound Desto has been building for the past few years to its logical conclusion. An intense listen that
can work equally well at home as in the club, it's an album that makes no concessions and wears its colours proudly:
a spectrum of dark emblazoned on a night time jacket.

ordered, clean. The same could not be said of Copenhagen four-piece When Saints Go
Machine's second full-length album, 'Infinity Pool'. The opposite, in fact. It's a record
born out of an atmosphere of chaos.
It's harder, darker and more synthetic than its predecessors. It opens with 'Love And
Respect', which features a guest vocal from Grammy award winning rap artist Killer
Mike, who freewheels over chugging, synth-drenched beat. Elsewhere, 'Dead Boy' sees
Vonsild's tremulous falsetto digitized and then floated over a semi-ambient sounds-
cape, while 'Infinity Killer' pitches skittering sound effects against a low-end drone.
On the previous album, 'Konkylie', we tried to make machines simulate nature,' says
Vonsild. 'With 'Infinity Pool' we were trying to capture a feeling of the absurdity of
mankind trying to construct nature. Maybe it's something to do with being in the city.
You are always influenced by what's going on around you.'
It's also to do with the music that inspired them. 'There are a lot of references to the
early '90s on the album,' says Vonsild. 'It's not a rave album, but there are a lot of
elements of rave on there. 'Degeneration' sums up what we were trying to do. There are
some tracks on the album that could almost have been rave songs under other circum-
stances. I think that it's one of the songs that I don't think anyone else would have
made.'
Rather than go at these rave influences full tilt, they did the opposite of what might be
expected: they stripped them down and twisted them into new shapes.
The dark undercurrent that coloured the band's previous releases is intact, then. It's
something that makes the fact that When Saints Go Machine won a string of awards in
their native Denmark last year all the more surprising. Vonsild is sanguine about that
kind of music industry approval.
While it's nice to be liked, Vonsild says it's far more important to challenge people as
well as yourself. He says they felt nervous about the direction they took on 'Infinity
Pool', unease that they were operating outside their comfort zone. 'But,' he adds,
'that's a good thing. Whenever you feel a bit scared about putting something out, that's
how you should feel as an artist.'

»Aquarium Eyes« ist das zweite Album des österreichischen Duos Ritornell. Ihr Erstling »Golden Solitude« erschien 2009 ebenfalls auf Karaoke Kalk. Akustische und elektronische Klänge verschmelzen auf »Aquarium Eyes«. Aufnahmen, die mit viel Liebe zum Detail (unter anderem im Studio von Patrick Pulsinger) entstanden sind, werden behutsam in den Ritornell-Klangkosmos eingewoben. Durch subtile elektronische Verfremdungen entwickeln Instrumente wie Klavier, Kontrabass, Vibrafon, Kalimba und Akkordeon ein überraschendes Eigenleben, um sich Momente später im Zischen und Fauchen elektronischer Gerätschaften aufzulösen. Unterdessen werden sie umspielt vom Funkeln mehrschichtiger elektro-akustischer Drones. Einzelne organische Geräusche und sublime Texturen komplettieren die detaillierten Arrangements. Für »Aquarium Eyes« hat Ritornell erstmals Songs geschrieben: Die Wiener Künstlerin Mimu singt, flüstert und haucht rote Fäden durch manche der fragilen Klangkonstrukte, die Gerold und Eigner mit Fingerspitzengefühl zusammengesetzt haben. Für das Stück »Tremble« hat sich das Duo mit dem Vokal-Künstler Didi Bruckmayr zusammengetan. Der Track »Music Box« ist ein Konzeptstück: Dirigiert von Richard Eigner drehen 20 Personen gleichzeitig an ihren Spieluhren. Aus den Melodien der Musikgeschichte wird dabei ein funkelndes Gewirr. Mit »In Every Dream Home A ÊHeartache« hat sich Ritornell schließlich auch an eine Roxy Music Coverversion gewagt, wobei an die Stelle der Gitarren ein Streichertrio getreten ist. Live präsentieren Richard Eigner und Roman Gerold ihre Musik zusammen mit Mimu und Gerhard Daurer, gelegentlich auch verstärkt von Bernd Klug am Kontrabass und Meaghan Burke am Cello.

On April, 20th the sixth Record Store Day will take place. Sonar Kollektiv has two very special goodies in store: There's the limited 300 copies 12inch of the Paskal & Urban Absolutes remix for Jazzanova's That Night.
The other goodie is a reinterpretation of Terry Callier's 900 Miles from 1968 by FETSUM. In honor of the soulfolk singer/songwriter, who sadly passed away in late 2012, the new stunning soul voice of Germany covers one of his all time favorite songs. A brave move which succeeded fairly and fittingly pays tribute to one of the most talentend musicians of our times. Sonar Kollektiv A&R manager Alex Barck is also a huge fan of Terry
Callier. After he recently has remixed FETSUM's Letters From Damascus so brilliantly it's a logical step to have him step in and turn FETSUM's cover into a club track. It's astonishing how Barck pushes the groove towards South America and still leaves air to breathe for FETSUM's voice .
Matt Karmil is less known as a remixer, but more as a versatile session musician and producer. For instance he played with Cee Lo Green, Siobhan Donaghy and Neneh Cherry and produced Portishead, Massive Attack, Sugababes, Patrice und Gorillaz. The fact that he now found some time to give an existing track his very personal note is Sonar Kollektiv's achievement and our luck. His delivery would even shine in the portfolio of, let's say DJ Shadow or Geoff Barrow. An outrageous attempt.

DJing all over the world at many of clubland's most esteemed nights over the past couple of years and collaborating with an elite roll-call of dance music's most credible class, Victoria named the record Nocturnes because it is 'an album indebted to the night." Winning critical acclaim alongside rapturous responses from live crowds, Rudimental are a collective with strong musical heart (in the shape of Piers Aggett, Amir Amor, Kesi Dryden and Leon Rolle) who, like Soul II Soul, Massive Attack or Basement Jaxx before have come together to strike musical gold with a unique identity: sound- clashing live instruments, beats and soulful voices. Rudimental release their debut album Home , through Asylum Records on April 29th. . It follows the blaze lit by previous singles - the chart-topping 'Feel The Love', 'Not Giving In', with its empowering message for hard times, and the bittersweet street record 'Hell Could Freeze' - with New York rapper Angel Haze. The new song brings the summer festival season fast forward a few months - with a huge sing-along chorus seamlessly on top of a rolling D&B beat and the band's signature brass and Hammond organ.
The band will also take their carnival-esque live show - complete with extended Rudimental family of players and vocalists - on the road this April with a UK headline tour supporting the release of their debut album. Their tour kicks off in Glasgow on April 23. They will also play Liverpool, Nottingham, Manchester, Birmingham, Oxford and Norwich, taking in London's Electric in Brixton on May 2. The headline tour follows their slot supporting label-mate Plan B on his sell out arena tour, and Australia's Future Music tour (alongside Stone Roses & Prodigy), and a US tour taking in SXSW and a main-stage slot at Miami's Ultra Festival.
With a melting pot of influences stamped firmly across the brilliant and adventurous forthcoming album - soulful songs, live instrumentation and massive club tunes - the tour will showcase a wealth of new material and deliver the hits, including one of 2012's biggest hits - the Brit Nominated 'Feel The Love.'

Der 1934 in Berlin geborene Komponist gehört zu den wenigen Großmeistern die mit wenig Mitteln sehr viel erreichen. Seine Musik ist leise und behutsam, doch nicht zaghaft. Farbig ohne vordergründige Brillanz. Sie ist eindringlich ohne aufzutrumpfen. Sie entfaltet sich organisch, ist von eigensinniger Schönheit. Aus der Differenzierung von Tönen und Klängen erwachsen Kontraste und Spannungen, die der Musik eine in sich ruhende Lebendigkeit verleihen. Mit dem Werk "Extension 1" (1964) ließ er die Fachwelt aufhorchen. Bereits in dieser Komposition beschäftigte er sich stark mit reduktionistischen Kompositionstechniken. Vergleichbare Beispiele sind in der Neuen Musik vor 1965 in Deutschland nicht zu finden. Sein Werk wurde bis vor kurzem nur von wenigen wahrgenommen, dies ändert sich zum Glück nach und nach und m=minimal freut sich zu der Verbreitung seiner Musik beitragen zu dürfen. Die erste Komposition "Ton in Ton" für Kammerorchester, ein Auftragswerk der Hanne-Darboven-Stiftung wurde vom weltweit renommierten "Ensemble Modern" unter der Leitung von Frank Ollu eingespielt. Das Werk, von Ernstalbrecht Stiebler im 2011 komponiert, hat die besten Voraussetzungen als Klassiker in die Geschichte der "minimal music" einzugehen. Das Ensemble Modern, hat während seines mehr als 25 jährigem Bestehens Kompositionen der herausragendsten Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts aufgenommen. Künstler von Helmut Lachenmann bis Frank Zappa schrieben Werke für - oder ließen ihre Werke von diesem Kammerensemble einspielen. Künstler wie Sakamoto und Alva Noto gehören zu den Bewunderern vom Ensemble Modern. Die Orgelkomposition "Torsi" aus dem Jahre 2002 wurde vom Stiebler-Kenner Hans-Peter Schulz auf der Heintz-Orgel der Stephanskirche in Konstanz eingespielt. Das dreiteilige Werk besteht aus den Sätzen: Torso, Organa Minima und Cantus und hat nichts gemein, mit den vielen geschwätzigen zeitgenössischen Orgelwerken der letzten hundert Jahre, wo die Komposition oft zur Leistungsschau für die Orgel wurde. Stieblers Komposition dagegen ist schwebend und kommt auf einer Orgel wunderbar zur Geltung. Als Bonusstück auf der CD und Download-Coupon der LP erscheint das Frühwerk "Betonungen", das Ernstalbrecht Stiebler 1968 für die Orgel schrieb. Eine Gegenüberstellung beider Orgelwerke lässt die Entwicklungen Stieblers wunderbar hörbar machen. Das erste von m=minimal veröffentlichte Album mit Werken Stieblers bekam hervorragende Besprechungen auch außerhalb des Neuen-Musik-Zirkels. "ctm 13" widmete einen ganzen Abend den Kompositionen von Ernstalbrecht Stiebler. Das Konzert war ausverkauft und Intro schrieb: "Zu den spannendsten Programmpunkten gehören wieder einmal die Veranstaltungen, die die aktuelle elektronische Musik in einen historischen Kontext einzuordnen versuchen. Berlin based Martsman steps up for the latest techno release on Pushing Red. 'Shrank' and 'NYCD' both weigh in at less than 130 BPM despite bucket loads of shuffle. You'd be forgiven for describing these sounds as garagey. Shrank has some uplifting progression and plenty of hi-hats and NYCD backs it all up nicely with some dub influenced tripped out sounds. Another top release from Pushing Red. Their third this year in fact.

Mikal's 'Spiritual' is inspired by the sounds of classic Metalheadz. A relaxed atmosphere soon gives way to a thunderous kick drum and warped bass. It is easy to hear how this vinyl cut has been hammering clubs across the world.On the flip continues Utopia's desire to push for consistent quality. Rido performs his remix duties of 'The Chant' most admirably. Dream-inducing atmospherics introduce this one, lulling us as the break builds up from the back of the mix into a climatic drop of beat and bass weight combined with the most meaty bass stab for the turnaround soldiers.DJ support from Andy C, Friction, Goldie, Break and many distinguished others.

2 x CD in gatefold sleeveFor those who want to know the background, it is something like this. I bought an Italian drawbar organ module around two years ago. Apparently Italian organs from that period had a bad reputation but I was so happy with it that it appeared on most of the tracks I had been working on. I thought I had an album together and was supposed to get it mastered on the day after the mastering session for the Pinch and Shackleton release on Honest Jons (sometime towards the end of Summer 2011). I had also been working on a 12 of more spacious music to go with that album as a limited vinyl 12. By the time that I finished the music though, the tracks for that 12 became so long for that I couldn't contain them to two sides of a vinyl. This is what became Music For The Quiet Hour album.In the end we didn't get time to finish the mastering on that day in late Summer 2011 and for one reason or another the date got pushed back three months. Then there was the artwork. There was a lot to do and that took a long time to finish. On top of that I then moved house and studio. To cut a long story short, these things stacked up to a six months or so delay in the release. In the meantime I listened back to the whole 2 hours plus of music a few times and it struck me that Music For The Quiet Hour was an album (yes, a proper album) to be listened to all the way through, whilst the drawbar organ tracks were better suited to 12 releases. Hence the format you have in front of you. A proposed 12 that actually turned out to be an album and a proposed album that turned out to be a series of 12s. In short, there is some new music from me. It's generally bass heavy and percussive with an involved narrative. Some people will like it and some people won't. I think that it is quite different to music I have released before, I suspect that other people won't. Many thanks to musical contributors Andreas Gerth and Kingsuk Biswas. Many thanks as well to Zeke who has done wonderful artwork again and Vengeance Tenfold who has provided great vocals and also the superb letter that proved to be a big inspiration for both the artwork booklet and the music from Music For The Quiet Hour (Part 4 is based on a letter he wrote to his granddaughter who lives in the year 2065). 03 Shackleton - Seven Present Tenses -

Nearly five years have elapsed since Truth's seminal Deep Medi plate 'The Fatman' announced their arrival as serious talents on the
international dubstep scene. In that time they have nurtured and
developed their reputation as architects of the fiercest, sub-low beats that balance raw dancefloor-rupturing force with the meditative,
eyes-down characteristics of dubstep's earliest formative sound. Their output has been prolific whilst maintaining the highest of
quality control; releases span Black Box, Argon, Boka, Wheel & Deal, Tempa and with their Aquatic Lab LP 'Puppets' they delivered
classic album that hits as hard today as it did back then. In 2013 they remain at the
forefront of dubstep innovation, possessing the ingenuity and creative drive to continue to push the sonic envelope with their
innovative,bass-ravaged sounds.
The latest chapter in their illustrious music careers sees two cuts of intense halfstep pressure released on New Moon Recordings, an
imprint still riding high from the success of the NMN006 transmission provided by kiwi compatriots Perverse. 'Iron Lung' and
'Medusa' are up there
with some of the deepest beats Truth have ever built, as they paint cavernous and paranoid soundscapes on top of supremely
engineered dread basslines. There's an element of cohesiveness across the two tracks with both utilising haunting vocal melodies to
create an icy-cold, ghostly aesthetic that chills to the core; Truth have long been masters of layering beautiful voice-based harmonies
in their music, and it works to great effect here. On 'Medusa', underneath the
precise rigidity of the halfstep drum structure, they imbue so much movement and swing with the subs, as they jump and sink
through varying frequencies with real buoyancy; it's an absolutely killer bassline and something you really have to experience on a
soundsystem. Similarly, on 'Iron Lung' the low-end is of course a focal point, with slow-burn oscillations providing some wicked
syncopation. The beat is typically sparse and skeletal, but the intersection of a collection
perfectly timed growls, pads, muted horns and quaint strikes of percussion all combine to create an intricately detailed piece that
keeps you vigorously rocking from side to side. The 12' as a whole is
another example of fresh, impeccably produced bassweight excellence from the duo, and another firm indicator that Truth's signature
sound is in the rudest of health.

Paris is back and it's no longer pumping to the
filtered sound of disco house. Instead, a '90s
generation have come of age born into the
monochromatic shadow of Mathieu Kassovitz's
classic film, La Haine. A world of internal tensions
cracking the ground for new shoots to appear from
a vibrant street culture that's en Seine in the
membrane, raised as much on global bass and hip-
hop's freakiest mutations as the distant orbit of
Chicago and Detroit.
You can hear it in the music of ClekClekBoom, the
Paris-based label which began in 2007 as a website
releasing baile funk from Rio's favelas but now
serves up its own home-grown ghetto grooves. Built
around a core of twenty-something DJs and
producers, spearheaded by French Fries (who runs
the label alongside Ministre X and The Boo), their
youthful energy has forged boundary breaking
ambitions. And as ClekClekBoom Recordings
reaches its first birthday at the start of 2013, its
dedication to quality and longevity is evident in a
commitment to vinyl, alongside digital, releases, a
box fresh aesthetic courtesy of artistic director The
Boo, their fortnightly Boomcast show, attracting....

COH is the moniker used by Ivan Pavlov from Russia for more than a decade. COH is also the Russian word for 'sleep'.

Originally released on Montreal's long defunct Intr_version label in 2001, Primordia was Scott Monteith's first foray into the album format, and some 13 years on serves as a remarkable document of the driving aesthetic touchstones which even at this early stage were bubbling to the surface and have gone on to define the sound of his Deadbeat project in the many years since. Over the course of 7 colossal slabs of crackling digital atmospheres and rumbling drone, a dirge of muted kick drums serve as the only steady anchor in a sea of wildly unhinged and naive sound experimentation, with the whole lovely mess plummeting into a endless cloud of decaying echos, granular processing, and cracked software reverb plugins. With it's production coinciding with the first years of his tenure at the Montreal based music software company Applied Acoustics systems, Primordia is the sound of the young dub Padawan reveling in the endless possibilities of modular software synthesis, and relishing each and every new discovery and mistake along the way.

Re-released on CD and for the first on lavish double vinyl with remastering by long time friend and cohort Stefan Betke aka Pole, Primordia is an essential cornerstone in Monteith's now vast catalog, and a must have addition to the collection of any serious dub techno historian.

Over the past few years Huxley's name has been on everyone's lips in the house scene, following a string of deep house and garage-infused tracks for labels like Hypercolour, Tsuba and 20:20 Vision. His sound is incredibly distinctive, its swung rhythms rooted in UK garage, accompanied by diced vocals and chords that hark further backward toward originators like MK and Todd Edwards.

Huxley's latest release offers three subtly different takes on his sound. Lead track 'Lost Love' is stark and electronic, pairing swing percussion with keys that trickle upward through the beat. It's elevated further by shimmering synth licks that ripple across its surface and mark it out immediately in the mix. 'Who Am I' has been all over house dancefloors and Rinse FM recently, its downpitched vocal sample buffeted by thick organ chords. 'Walk 2 U' rounds off the package with one of Huxley's most explicitly garage-leaning productions to date, opening with a pirouetting two-step beat reminiscent of El-B, before a four-to-the-floor kickdrum halfway through transforms the track into a burning peak-time anthem.

Following on from his long awaited album KU:PALM in November of last year, we now see its lead track Pyramid get a vinyl release
on Photek's own label, Photek Productions. The eastern instrumentation and spacey beats may not be apt for every dance floor, but
for fans of Modus Operandi era Photek, Pyramid is an essential tune.
On the flip we have Oshun, another track from KU:PALM this time remixed by Beneath, a producer that began making waves last
year with a series of 12's on his own label, No Symbols and a cracking mix for Fact Mag. He has gone on to release the Illusions EP
on Dusk & Blackdown's Keysound Recordings, as well as a 12' on Pinch's influential Tectonic Recordings. Mixing the darkest
elements of funky, dub and syncopated grime with a distinctly UK edge, Beneath's complex layered beats result in a truly unique
sound that is a perfect matched to remix fellow experimentalist Photek. A young producer that clearly knows his shit, Beneath is a
breath of fresh air.

»Aquarium Eyes« ist das zweite Album des österreichischen Duos Ritornell. Ihr Erstling »Golden Solitude« erschien 2009 ebenfalls auf Karaoke Kalk. Akustische und elektronische Klänge verschmelzen auf »Aquarium Eyes«. Aufnahmen, die mit viel Liebe zum Detail (unter anderem im Studio von Patrick Pulsinger) entstanden sind, werden behutsam in den Ritornell-Klangkosmos eingewoben. Durch subtile elektronische Verfremdungen entwickeln Instrumente wie Klavier, Kontrabass, Vibrafon, Kalimba und Akkordeon ein überraschendes Eigenleben, um sich Momente später im Zischen und Fauchen elektronischer Gerätschaften aufzulösen. Mit »In Every Dream Home A ÊHeartache« hat sich Ritornell schließlich auch an eine Roxy Music Coverversion gewagt, wobei an die Stelle der Gitarren ein Streichertrio getreten ist. Live präsentieren Richard Eigner und Roman Gerold ihre Musik zusammen mit Mimu und Gerhard Daurer, gelegentlich auch verstärkt von Bernd Klug am Kontrabass und Meaghan Burke am Cello.

2012 was without doubt the breakthrough year for South London Ordnance. In the space of twelve months the 23 year old artist put
out three separate 12's alongside a five track EP, which garnered support from Jamie XX, Scuba, Benji B, Mary Ann Hobbes, Mosca,
Claude Vonstroke, Richie Hawtin and more.
His jungle-advised, finely honed productions also rightly earned him notable mention in several annual end of year roundups including
DJ Mag's Best of British 2012, XLR8R's 4th Best New Act of 2012 (alongside Disclosure and Karenn), and Time Out UK's DJs to
Watch in 2013.
With this debut outing on Hotflush Recordings scheduled for March, 2013 is set to be yet another strong year for the young producer.

After the well-received and career-spanning compilation that was 2011's Ambient Selections, John Beltran returns with a brand new album entitled Amazing Things, due for released on Delsin records in March 2013.
As a life long pioneer of ambient soundscapes, blissful downbeat and stirring techno, Michigan born John Beltran already has his place in history assured with a bulging back catalogue that takes in influential releases on vital labels like Peacefrog and R&S. This new 17-track album sees the man draw on his lifetime in music to craft an immediately timeless body of work that's stuffed with genuine musicality, pregnant with emotion and laden with organic blissfulness.

Since Beltran's last original full length, he admits a lot has changed. "I'm using all new gear and virtual synths that I didn't have when writing Human Engine so it sounds different for sure. And let's just say that this album still wouldn't be finished had a friend not turned me on to the software Omnisphere."

Despite new tools and techniques, Beltran's touch still shines through in his floating arrangements, opposing textures and organic resonance, as do the continued influences of favourite artists including Four Tet, Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood.

"There was no real plan (for the album). Some of these songs ("Clouds Pull") are over two years old. This album is truly an accumulation of music inspired by my life as a new father but I didn't write these songs for an album per say. I guess it was just written with a lot of love."

Love - and feelings thereof - permeate the album from start to finish. Tracks like opener "Retrouvailles" immediately submerge you into a utopian world with the distant sound of a playground coming over like the backdrop to a daydream, whilst more kinetic, splintered efforts like "Het Leven is Mooi" recall the aforementioned patchwork beauty of Four Tet, and "Flower Power Submarine" carries you along on a warm summer breeze.

Importantly, dark is contrast with light throughout, so more sombre, melancholic drifts like "For Vangelis" sit next to the more uplifting violins and raindrop melodies of "Broken Machines". Overall a mature and hugely resonant album for grown-ups, Amazing Things is full of just that.

Although Robot Koch has an international reputation as being 'One of Europe`s finest
producers of the beat generation' (Low End Theory), he is much more than just a beatmaker.
Hailing from Berlin, Robot Koch released three albums and 2 EPs since 2009 (on Project
Mooncircle) and toured internationally, playing shows and festivals in the US and all over
Europe. Koch (who was at the Red Bull Music Academy all the way back in 99) is also the
mastermind behind the critically acclaimed band Jahcoozi (BPitch Control) and works as a
producer and composer for both indie and major artists worldwide.
Now he is back in the studio, working on his 4th studio full length, which will be his first majorlabel
release (Four Music/Sony Music Germany). Robot Koch collaborates again with vocalist
John LaMonica (featured on Robot's last album The Other Side released on Project
Mooncircle). The concept of the album is slightly different to his early works. It's a new project
entitled 'Robots Don't Sleep', a band project that takes the songwriting and melody-focus of
Koch`s last album 'The Other Side' to a next level and focuses on vocal tracks entirely.

Andy Cato...Groove Armada of course & before that Beat Foundation as well as Journey Man, Big C, The System, 7th
Sense & a whole array of others. Thats some pedigree,..This album has been gestating for some time, almost 20 years (the
1st from '93). 'I was travelling back from a gig recently & had an idea for a tune. I was just jotting it down & thought, 'I've
been doing this for ages, I wonder where all the others are' So I went to find the remaining fragments & try & put them
together. Every one of these songs immediately takes me back to a place & a time where it happened.' Sorting through
corrupt discs, snapped 8 track tapes, withered floppy discs & the plain missing, part of the process of creating the LP has
been the search & in a few cases, restoration. 'Most of them have not been touched,' explains Andy. 'I've had to recreate 1
or 2 as they were on C90s and even if you like the lo-fi it was just too much but some were in great nick.'

This is a personal record through the mortal maze of dance. 'I did it for me, I was worried that anyone else might not have
the same feelings when they heard the tracks but I played it to some people & they seemed to get caught up in the journey
as well.' From squat raves to gigs in front of 100k people to arriving at an LA gig on a Camel. It's a history of the past 20
years through the lens of 1 person. Enjoy the ride!

B-Side is probably our best kept secret weapon, one part Superman and two parts Animal from the Muppets. Behind the decks he is a demon, he absolutely tears dance floors to pieces, he can read a crowd like no other, if his gaze falls on you you get the feeling that he can even tell what colour underwear you're wearing...;or not wearing (Fair warning!)

His production has progressed the old school way, from cutting his own unique bootlegs for his live shows and learning as he went. A seemingly permanent residency at Southampton's Orange rooms - practically the second home of the one and only Featurecast - helped define his sound and he's now cranking out regular Juno top spot releases on the Ghetto Funk label.

One of the few surviving links to the pre-Soul/R&B era, Bobby Womack - who was originally discovered as a teenager singing Gospel music by the late Sam Cooke - nowadays enjoys full-blown 'Living Legend' status. Blessed with one of the warmest, most readily-identifiable voices in Soul music, he carved out his reputation with a series of classic albums and singles in the early 70s, re-emerging again in the 80s with his career masterpieces, The Poet and The Poet II, the latter achieving platinum status in Europe alone.

Kode9 drops his first single in two years. 'Xingfu Lu' is a kind of musical puzzle. Named after a Shanghai street where it was started, it's intense, wrapping angular chords that are simultaneously ecstatic and brutal around a structure that contracts and dilates, switching from double time hats and kicks to half time hip hop speed. It sounds strangely faster than it's 150 bpm as well, building ugly chord structures into strange shapes. 'Kan's strange, almost 3D structure combines clinking glass and pouring drink with a rhythm track alternating between skittering triplets and bouncy dancehall-style drums, half speed bass drops and spirals of glassy high-hats, every eight bars punctuated with Trap-style tuned snares. Relentless chords stab at the centre, holding it's unstable structure in place.

Definitely Xtrah at his darkest, this is yet another gold seal release on what's quickly becoming one of the most exciting labels out there.

* Tangent is the latest in a succession of high quality releases, coming as it does after sessions for Dispatch, Renegade Hardware and now, Horizons. As with the rest of their output, Tangent, which is backed with the Geode remix, shows off their technical abilities and their unifying desire to move the crowd. Their mutual love of music, and early experience in a range of bands, has transmogrified into a searing, urgent awareness of what is funky and groovy in d&b. Tokyo's Heavy1 scoops up top-drawer tech-roller skunks Craggz & Parallel for his new Yabai 84 project, and result is a typically tough yet pleasingly funky nugget of bashy tech filth. Face-slapping snares slam down amid gristly, scurrilous mid-range warpings, yet the knotty synths are laced with a bouncy, bullfrogging bass melody that burps and parps along in fine dancefloor style. Check the flip for Heavy1's own efforts: a stop-start technoid percussion trip that rattles and jars off to infinity.

Following a year-long break, LionDub International is proud to announce our return to wax with the rekindling of our long-standing
alliance with storied junglist Marcus Visionary, featuring vocals by reggae legend Johnny Osbourne. The first single from an
albumlong project, Rock it Tonight revisits Osbourne's 1986 smash We Gonna Rock it Tonight for the equally storied Jammy's
Records, but with an entirely new voicing and new lyrics. Marcus Visionary himself has had a long and storied career, starting on L
Double's old school Flex Records and moving forwards with other essential imprints like Revolve:r and his own Dance Rock Records
before making a solid connection with LionDub in 2009. Our strong support goes hand in hand with his inimitable style, and time and
again he's delivered massive releases that keep fans coming back for more. For this teaser to the album, Marcus steps up with two
contrasting versions of Rock it Tonight sure to cause ruckus on dancefloors. With digihorns, police sirens, and a skank sourced from
the song's original incarnation, for the original version the drums follow a bouncy reggae groove that keeps up the tempo but also
keeps a lighter mood. Tougher is his 'Jungle Remix', where busier breakage brings a rollicking classic jungle feeling. Together these
two mixes raise the bar high for the full-length, but given Marcus' track record here on LionDub, we have no doubt it will live up to the
highest of these expectations.

After honing his skills as a teenager on the illegal rave scene in the late 90's, his early days as a DJ saw him picked up to be a
resident warm up artist for the legendary promotion 'Movement', going on to play at some of Londons top nightclubs over the years,
as well as abroad, and hosting weekly shows on Origin fm.
The last few years have been focussed more and more towards his productions, allowing him to cultivate his skills as an artist, and
securing DJ support of his work from the likes of - Andy C, Chase and Status, Subfocus, Marky, Bailey, Bryan G, Calyx, Teebee,
DBridge, Break, Ulterior Motive, Zero Tolerance and Xtrah to name a few!

ollowing on from Lightfields (2010), and his collection of ambient works 'And All Is As It Should Be'(2012), British electronic producer Adam Fielding's is set to return to Distinctive with a new album titled 'Icarus'. As ever, Fielding's productions are rich with drama, space and intention. His work always carries a distinctly cinematic narrative; a trait that's picked up by the film production houses that regularly champion his work.

Opening the album is the title track and first single off the album.It's a vocal opus charged with breathy pads, smart string arrangements and snappy beats. 'Fireworks' is a powerful follow-on, with an undulating synth bass line and expansive tonal work.

For 'Are Lights Approaching', he takes a thumping 4x4 beat and envelops it in his signature textures, topping it off with an edgy vocal delivery that gives a raw, low-slung feel. Next up, 'All We Ever Wanted' introduces some acoustic guitar tones and yearning lyrics to the mix to create a haunting ballad.

'Somewhere Out There' is an ambient piece, just vocals and ethereal pads on this one that builds to a cathartic end. 'Hiding From January' is purely instrumental, showcasing Fielding's intricate beat programming skills. Next, we have 'Out of Reach'. It's a propulsive stomper with a darker, industrial space-age feel. Fielding's effected vocals adding to the crystalline finish.

'High Rise Downfall' uses a forceful broken beat pattern to punctuate beautiful synthetic atmospheres before some warm piano and guitar chords kick in to switch the vibe. 'Break Me Down' carries on the piano themes,this time paired with dynamic 'rock-esque' beats and chord progressions to make one of the album's proper epics.

'A Fire In The Sky' is a moody and contemplative, acting as the level-setting precursor to one of the more accomplished vocal tracks on the album, 'Ashes By Dawn'. Fielding's vocal takes centre stage here, and it's nothing short of breathtaking. As a final reprise, he delivers a short yet stunning string arrangement using the movements of the opening 'Icarus.' A fitting end to a record.

That sounds like Al Green enters Willie Mitchell's Hi-Studio for the first time, as if Archie Bell committed an unknown band from Houston, the "Tsu Toronadoes" as his backing band and recorded the legendary guitar riff of "Tighten Up", as if Issac Hayes conducted the Stax horn section , all that sounds like Northern Soul. That blueprint of dance music that was created on the northern english club scene, finding its way now throughout Europe, animating thousands of hipsters to some real acrobatic dancing.

I met Al & The Teenagers at a Soul Allnighter in Barcelona. They are fans, lovers of obscure african-american soul music from the 60's and 70's. They play what they love and you can hear that. They are funky without being "Funk", smart without being mods and definitely the tightest live band I've ever seen live. Eventually they even made guest appearances as a backing band for a couple of forgotten soul singers, Dean Parrish and Tommy Hunt in my hometown. They played their own one hour program and then accompanied Tommy Hunt and Dean Parrish for another hour each, just to immediately be found on the dance floor after the concert was over to dance like there would be no tomorrow. Enthusiasm, energy, fun, and an attitude to life that is fed by their deep love for the vinyl singles of Stax, Atlantic and other more obscure 60's soul labels. They are a leading part of the renaissance of soul music. The timeless, great soul music.

In a fair and better world, 2013 would be the year of Al Supersonic & The Teenagers, that's for sure! Their second album, It's alright! can easily compete with Sharon Jones and Nicole Willis. Ever since they started in a borstal in Granada (Spain) many years ago, Al Supersonic & The Teenagers had a clear idea of the influences and the musical spirit they wanted to use as a basis for their musical work, revitalizing 60s and 70s afro-american soul in every single note they're playing.. The Teenagers have Soul music in their veins; when asked they say "We are not Soul, Soul makes us".

They have been the backing band for soul icons such as Tommy Hunt, Dean Parrish and P.P Arnold and shared stages with great soul bands as The Impressions, James Hunter or Eli Paperboy. Their first album, Not Too Young (Unique Records), received an Ufi (Independent Phonographic Union of Spain) Award for best Urban Music Album released in 2010, it was considered to be the 10th best album by Spanish music magazine Ruta 66, the 5th best best album of Andalusia by the music magazine Mondo Sonoro Ed. Sur (South Edition) and in the same year they won the Popeye Award for the best black music band in Spain. Their songs are the product of years of passion for the music they love, fulfilled with choruses and arrangements imbued with the true spirit of soul. Smart and with a street attitude, they understand the language of the music. The haunting intensity of Al's gritty vocals, supplemented by the sumptuous presence of Vanesa Spin's brilliant Hammond sound, the solid horns and the classy rhythm section of Javi Frias and Gustavo Fernandez have brought AlSupersonic & The Teenagers in the premiere league of today's live acts. A good proof of this fact have been their successful shows in Italy, England, Germany, France, Switzerland, Portugal and their home, Spain.

As a taster for their brand new album, It's Alright, they released the 45" Paint Yourself in the Corner, that got massive airplay on radio stations worldwide and became an instant dancefloor filler on the international club scene. the French based label gets back moodier than ever with 'Junction 12', a collection of 6
meticulously picked Drum & Bass tracks from some of the hottest talents on board that
comes in the form of a 3x12inch vinyl series.
Disc 1 sees Berlin producer Es.tereo going back to some of his darker playgrounds with
'Junction 12', an autonomic influenced stepper forged on obsessive robotic vocals and
industrial klanks. On the B side, French techstep veterans Kantyze deliver a surprisingly
uncluttered roller named 'Tough Breaker'. Simple & efficient.
With releases on labels such as Goldie's legendary imprint Metalheadz , 2012 has been a
wealthy year as well for Mortem as he returns to IM:Ltd with 'Converter', another brilliant
track that won't contradict his well earned reputation for creating music that causes serious
damages on dance floors across the globe. The flip consist of 'Amour King', the first vinyl
effort from Quartz , a new duo hailing from Cardiff.
On Disc 3, Gerwin steps up his game with 'It's All In Your Head', a seedy piece of minimal
tech funk. Once again, his ease and versatility definitively makes him one of the name to be
watched out for in the coming months. Last but not least, Belgian producer Atmospherix
teams up with S-Vb for some 'modular revenge'.

Paradise Club Recordings are due to serve up another eclectic EP later this month - their first selection of what they have in store for
2013 - and it's one that furthers the label's trend of showcasing the many different styles at their disposal from their current roster.
Label stalwart Jabru kicks things off with 'Last Days of Rome', an aptly-titled cut that begins by traipsing through ambient swells and
looms, only to then brew up a truly decadent, central dancehall rhythm. The so-real-you-can-taste-it narrative of featured vocalist and
LV collaborator Joshua Idehen also lends the lyrical side a distinct sense of tangibility that serves to genuinely build upon the track's
woozy atmosphere more and more as the story progresses. Bristol's Hodge is on hand for the remix, and whilst his take is
deceptively similar initially, Jabru's tune is given a much more bass-inclined edge once it drops and it makes for a heart racing affair
by all accounts.
The EP takes a house-driven swerve with the final two tracks - Blacksmif's 'Gavelock' has lasers sniping constantly from one end of
the track to the other, allowing for its gloriously infectious groove to carve its way nice 'n easy straight down the middle. Equipped
with 'Solace State' (a joint effort courtesy of PCR up-and-comers Juno Sutton & MTD) and its jumping melody that blossoms with a
truly sublime vocal break, both tunes utilise many of the tropes associated with the modern house of the moment, and it's safe to say
with the dance world's current fascination on the slightly weirder side of the subgenre at full capacity, finishing the EP off with this
one-two punch was most definitely a damn good idea.

Scott Mou, known as one half of the duo Jane - the folk techno drone duo he had with Panda Bear - aswell as part of Manhattan's famous record store Other Music, debuts with his Soloproject Queens. 

Johan Jacobsen describes the wonderful music of Queens "in oxymorons; "colorful monochrome," "myopic depth," "sad joy," "driven slowness," "enlightened darkness," "universal intimacy ' , "ethereal earthboundness" ... As it should be. Queens is one of those wonderful artists who are hard to catch on the fly, who escapes easy definition. His music is an unexpected and unimagined universe ready to be explored, and it's a universe that is wonderful to be in."

When Dial Records' David Lieske and Peter Kersten listened to a performance of their New York based friend in 2009, it was one of those unforgettable unique experiences you only have once in a long while these days. The idea of releasing an album was born. The production of "End Times" involved other labelmates such as Phillip Sollmann aka Efdemin (recording), Kassian Troyer (mixing) and Hendrik Weber, who once joined a life performance on stage with Scott Mou in 2012.
