October has been releasing bass driven music from broken dubstep to jacking minimal house since 2003. Having established himself with his own Caravan imprint, and a gig schedule that regularly takes in Fabric, Robert Johnson, Bunker NYC, Cookies & Horst he is now heading up Tanstaafl a collaboration with respected Berlin based DJ Jon Osborn and has killer releases lined up on Skudge's own label and Will Saul's Simple.Borai has been a respected DJ for many years in Bristol, and can be found working behind the counter of one of the only 2nd hand record shops left in Bristol, Prime Cuts. He also works at Dub Studio the Bristol based dub-cutting house that has been making waves with their special vinyl dubplates.Together they make full use of the analogue synths and outboard effects in October's studio. With the beautiful melodic sensibility of Borai's synth lines meshing with Octobers jacking body beats, they fuse to create 2 sublime slices of warm, deep, but propulsive blends of slo-mo house, techno, & bass. 'I Didn't Mean To' has a Detroit techno soul feel with Bukem style bass stabs and rainforest jungle ambient noises, whilst 'Palmarosa' is a sure-fire set starter, taking it's time to build with cavernous bass stabs adding drama until the heads down jacking ensues.

Prolix's debut solo release for Suicide. We hope there's many more to come because this 12 is sick as shit.

Protect-U is the studio project of Mike Petillo and Aaron Leitko, who are associated with the new breed of dance music producers from in and around Washington DC, coming from a similar background as Ital, Innergaze and Beautiful Swimmers, with a history of playing alongside Mi Ami, Blues Control, Slava, Steve Moore, and Pissed Jeans among others. Mike is also co-owner of the very cool record label Future Times, alongside Andrew Field-Pickering aka Maxmillion Dunbar, who is also one half of Beautiful Swimmers. The music they make is a bottom up take on dance music created out of sessions jamming on analogue gear that got serious, resulting in a brittle, but soft and exuberant house music, thoughtfully paired down to the fundamentals and kissed by sunshine and good times. Their first two EPs on Future Times have attracted lots of the right kind of attention, and this three tracker follows in the same trajectory. 'Motorbike' starts with a bassline that recalls early Jellybean-era Madonna, before the track is all but buried in woozy, psychedelic strings that seem to bend and vibrate around the rhythm. 'Lawndog' is a tougher beast, with tight syncopated tropical rhythms underpinning light and breezy synths seemingly borrowed from Dare-era Human League. 'Invisible Halo' is hazier and slower, bumping along in a drowsy fashion, like a slow accompaniment to the sunrise after the night before.

Public Image Ltd confirm their first new material in 20 years will begin with the EP 'One Drop' released for 'Record Store Day' on April 21st Followed by the album 'This Is PiL' on May 28th The new material will be released on the bands own label 'PiL Official' Public Image Ltd can confirm that a 4 track 'EP' entitled 'One Drop' is set to be released for 'Record Store Day' on April 21st, marking their first new material for 20 years. The 4 track 'EP' is taken from the forthcoming album 'This Is PiL' released on May 28th. Both the new EP and album is self-funded by PiL and will be released on PiL's own label 'PiL Official' via Cargo UK Distribution. All the new material was recorded in the UK last year at Steve Winwood's studio in the Cotswolds. PiL were recently confirmed as special guests at BBC Radio 6 birthday celebrations at Queen Elizabeth Hall, London March 16th where they will be performing live, including some new tracks. With their show at The Brighton Concorde on August 16th sold out, a second date has been added at the venue on August 15th. Lead track 'One Drop' from the EP of the same name was given an exclusive airing by Steve Lamacq on his BBC 6 show last week. John Lydon describes the track as- 'One Drop is a reflection of where I grew up in Finsbury Park , London . The area that shaped me, and influenced me culturally and musically, a place I will forever feel connected to. But within this I am also saying it doesn't matter where you come from, we all go through the same emotions especially the disenchanted youth of today, yesterday and the future. Bearing in mind the Olympics are in London this year and who knows what that could bring for London and our country....'

High up in the skies, amongst the clouds, Rocket Juice & The Moon was born. Literally. It happened back in 2008, when Damon Albarn, Flea and Tony Allen convened on the same Lagos flight, to play and exchange musical ideas in that city as part of the Africa Express collective. Relishing a shared enthusiasm for one another's work, and bonding immediately, there and then the triumvirate laid down the blueprint for Rocket Juice.
Still, more than a year passed before conditions were set for three weeks together at Albarn's West London studio, recording and refining two-dozen startlingly out and deeply funky instrumental grooves. The next stage was to invite onboard some extremely talented friends, with further sessions in Dallas, New York, Chicago and Paris... Erykah Badu, no less, queen of contemporary soul. Three companions from Africa Express: Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara, whose debut album has topped World Music charts since its release last Autumn; her multi-talented compatriot Cheick Tidiane Seck, whose prodigious keyboardism has lit up releases by artists ranging from Youssou N'Dour to Hank Jones; the young, Ghanaian rapper M.anifest, quizzically existential, switching seamlessly between Twi and English. And the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, long-time stalwarts in the Honest Jon's set-up — since one of the team discovered them busking near the shop in Portobello Road, on his lunchbreak — with a second album for the label due in May... Finally, the tracks were dispatched for mixing to Berlin, to be meticulously honed, polished and envenomed by Mark Ernestus, one half of the legendary Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound partnerships.
The result is Rocket Juice & The Moon — out March 26, 2012, on Honest Jon's Records — a triumphant exploration and proliferation of kinetic Afro-funk rhythms: organic, exuberant, communal music-making, evidenced by the project's live debut on stage as part of the Honest Jon's Chop Up in late 2011, which hit London, Marseille, Dublin, and Cork to such great acclaim (witness the flurry of smart-phone film-clips uploaded in the days thereafter).
From the inaugural bars — that absurdly funky slice of instructional timekeeping, 1-2-3-4-5-6 — the liquid pulse of Fela Kuti's classic recordings drives the action through a suite of 18 shape-shifting compositions. The greatest drummer in the world has never sounded so good as he does here. His intricate cross-patterns jostle and lock with Flea's nimble, rumbling bass riffs. Joined by Seck on There and Extinguished — 'when you dispose of something burning, be sure it's out' — Albarn's keyboards spray synth fusillades up top, over, and under... splicing into the mess of wires running between the freaked Afro-disco of William Onyeabor and the space-jazz-moog of Sun Ra. The HBE brings extra intensity and drama to Leave-Taking — likewise Flea's trumpet to Rotary Connection — teasing out the haunting melody coiled in the mix.
Where the best of vintage Afrobeat sides sustained their concentrated energies over the course of sprawling, marathon jams, RJ & TM manages something altogether different: the group bottles the idiom into capsules of funk... and real songs. Beautifully buoyed by Erykah Badu's unmistakable vocals, Hey, Shooter brilliantly traverses metaphysical spaceways sans any semblance of noodling. Lolo and Follow-Fashion — featuring the open-hearted sensuality of Diawara's singing, M.anifest's quick, brawny science, and more brass blasts — play like its musical cousins or codas. Indeed, the album's shrewd sequencing creates the composite effect of tracks working both individually or within the context of an extended song-cycle.
The lovely ballad, Poison, is bittersweet and ruminative: 'If you're looking for love, beware the signs / They will paralyze you one by one / Poison, it will only break your heart.' Down-tempo and dubby, Check Out and Worries amplify the range of styles and moods. And by the time of Fatherless — a chugging Afro blues that evokes John Lee Hooker lost in Lagos, one gets the sneaking suspicion there's very little outside the reach of this collective's inventive musical grasp.
There is, in fact, a palpable openness pervading Rocket Juice & The Moon — the sense of a limber willingness to follow creative impulse — right down to how the group acquired its name. When Ogunajo Ademola — the Lagotian commissioned to do the album's cover artwork — dubbed his submission 'Rocket Juice & The Moon', it quickly morphed into the formal name of the project, like trying to hold onto mercury.
Surely, the stars above also approved.

Fresh New Zealand talent, RQ, otherwise known as Ryan Quinlivan, delivers 4 original pieces of emotive music drenched in bass and pure vibes. Ryan is better known for his artwork for labels such as Samurai, Samurai Red Seal, V Recordings, Valve and Commercial Suicide, but this is set to change, as we unleash his debut release onto an unsuspecting public. Backing up the original tracks are remixes from Anders Peterson (A.P.) of Ghost Sounds fame, ASC, who also provides an outing for his Mindspan guise, Sam KDC and ambient stalwart, bvdub. Rub A Duck Presents - Duck Down Dubstep The Rub A Duck label has been active for a little over a year now and already established a rock solid reputation as a high quality outlet for dubstep, electro, rave and techno. In a short period of time the label managed to secure such highly acclaimed acts as The Freestylers, Utah Saints, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, The Crystal Method, MRK1 and Sound Avtar while legendary top producers like Cookie Monsta, Datsik, Damn You Mongolians and many others are lining up to deliver remixes for the imprint. Rub A Duck's success hasn't gone unnoticed and resulted in an impressive list of artists and releases.

Yellow Machines' latest release brings us into futuristic sci-fi territory with four slabs of bass heavy electronics. Siren Records has up until now served exclusively as the release platform for Siren, a joint alias of Vicious Circle and Universal Project's Ruxspin, with their 2010 album Broken Silence. The definitive track of that release, Snorkel, continues to get regular airplay two years down the line in both its original incarnation and the S.P.Y remix, which finally gets a release this coming May as the A-side of Siren Records very first single release (SIREN001). This surprising second outing for the seemingly limited label also enjoys an excellent submission from Vicious Circle, solo-producing Solitude on the flipside, a bleak, grimey and sonically timeless roller, characterised by its brooding bassline, amen break snippets and short, sharp vocal samples.

SKRILLEX is on the path for complete world domination and is kicking 2012 off with a bang by releasing a brand new EP 'BANGARANG', which is available digitally now. It went straight to #10 in the UK iTunes chart and very quickly peaked at #2 with it taking the #1 spot in the dance charts. In the US it peaked at #2 and went to #1 in Australia, New Zealand and Canada's iTunes charts. The first single 'Breakn' A Sweat (Skrillex & The Doors)' is Zane Lowe's Record of The Week at Radio 1 and has gone straight onto the A-list.

The second bomb being dropped by Renegade Masters is a sweet grower that pays homage to peasants rights all over the world and the inevitable rise of the bullied poor. The A side track is a hiphop influenced reggae soiree which leans into the chanting sing-along excursion of early '90s pop with a laid back vocal from Soom T injected with intense dramatic inflections. Not a standard piece of reggae by any means, the smooth production by Australia's Combat Wombat Monkey Marc makes for a dance-able chiller providing the driving force needed to hold up Soom T's extreme voicings, as well as making an adequate vehicle for MCs to ride the riddim on the B Side version.

The final Spectrasoul single before their stunning debut album drops has arrived and it looks set to cement the duo as one the most exciting and most talented production outfits currently spearheading the multi-genre movement with a release of epic proportions. Over the past several years, Raphael Johnson AKA SPKTRM has become widely acknowledged as one of the most upcoming producers in the American drum & bass scene. Following his debut release in 2006, he was picked up by some of the scene's heaviest hitters, including Dieselboy's Human Imprint Recordings, Evol Intent Recordings, Barcode Recordings and Gein's imprint Habit Recordings among others, and a strong set of releases (both forthcoming and current) were signed immediately. Always evolving, SPKTRM's sound has undoubtedly gone through quite the transformation. Today, his productions range from hard hitting, dancefloor steppers to dark, sinister broken beat chaos, and lately his fascination with the fusion of deeper drum & bass vibes with elements of traditional funk and jazz. The only thing that surpasses his production style in diversity is his live shows. SPKTRM has been known to incorporate everything from the harshest of breaks and sub sonic basslines to the smooth, airy sounds of soul infused liquid drum & bass into his sets. During the summer of 2009, he took part in the first wave of the heavy metal inspired concept tour, Monsters of Jungle, alongside such artists as Dieselboy, The Upbeats, Demo, Ewun, Infiltrata, Mayhem and Evol Intent (The crew is expected to reunite in 2010 to complete a full length North American tour). Most recently, SPKTRM has linked up with Los Angeles based producer Gridlok, and is working on tunes for his infamous Project 51 Recordings. He also has additional releases lined up for the new year, as well as remixes and collaborations with the likes of Gein, Demo, Joanna Syze and Dieselboy to name a few. Through constant and tireless work, SPKTRM is rapidly making a well established name for himself, and is an act not to be missed.

Originally by State of Mind, Black Sun Empire and Bulletproof, Gridlok plys his trademark grime, the result being a monster in the club. Supported by the likes of Jade, Optiv, Neonlight, Telekinesis, Optical and anyone with a dong. The flip is one for the headz. A big bass roller that sees State of Mind team up with Concond Dawn for the first time since 2008. A favorite with Calyx & Teebee, Chris Su, Ant TC1, Klute etc etc.

State of Mind are no strangers to drum and bass, and fresh off the heels of their last album 'Nil By Ear' and their free live album, we would undoubtedly consider them official rockstars. Always busy in the studio, managing their own imprint: 'SOM Music' (State Of Mind Music), and actually finding time to tour, they are relinquishing some serious output. This double A-side record proves how versatile these gents are! Stryker Matthews is a New York City based producer and DJ by way of Northern California by way of Southern California. Drawing influences from most of the continents with people living on them, he works to create rhythmically focused music that moves hips and spills drinks. Stryker grew up in San Juan Capistrano, CA playing guitar and drums in a string of bands who mastered the fine art of garage-based rocking before moving to the Bay Area and finding an interest in club music as a new class of producers with fresh takes on dance production began to flood the World Wide Web. Upon completing his first set of original tracks, he caught the ear of Dubstep pioneer, Skream, who signed the tunes to his imprint, Disfigured Dubz

Excellent third release on the essential 'Supafrico Records' featuring four absolutely stunning Afro flavoured grooves dug deep from the vaults. First up we have a previously unreleased extended version of 'Hot Black 'N' Sweet' by Nigerian funkster Kio Amachree. Taken from the über-rare 1981 'Ivory' LP, this a slice of pure funk filled afro boogie led by a groovy phat bline, driving horn section and Kio's magnificent Kid Creole-esque vocals. Number two comes in the form of 'Slow Down' from the hugely sought after 1981 'Grill' album by Amas. But 'Slow Down' it doesn't! With a catchy, pulsating drum intro, layers of incredible stabbing piano and damn-right groovy guitar licks, by the time the vocals come in, you're already in a state of Afro-euphoria! On the flip, we have the full 10 minute version of the ultra rare 'Sabi (Get Down)' from Ghanaian master drummer, Okyerema Asante feeding us a funk-riddled piece of undiluted afro groove pie with awesome vocals and tripped out synths Finally, if that wasn't enough, Time Will Tell is a deeply undulating Afro funk disco gem from the 7-piece who were also known as the Lafayette Rock Band. Welcome return for this very sought-after rare electro 12' from tiny Harlem label Express Records. Big with the Cosmic crowd as well as on the early hiphop scene, this is an extremely cool low-slung synth-heavy electro groover with a hypnotically smooth lead vocal, given a sharp percussive edge by the rattling congas and ticky-time chorus. Written at a time in rap music history when the introduction of synthesizer technology created a wild flurry of creativity, this futuristic track by Barry Michael Cooper (who went on to write the screenplays for movies New Jack City and Above The Rim) was Teletron's only ever release. Launched in 2010 by two music nerds, The Very Polish Cut-Outs quickly became one of the most important sources of fresh musical discoveries.
Focused on renewing interest in usually forgotten and obscure music from Poland's communist past, TVPC brings disco, funk, soul, electronic and psychedelic rock grooves made years ago in Poland, back to the modern dancefloor.
Label honcho's Zambon & Pnk.Discorporation expertly curated the series of tastefully done edits, reworks & mixtapes.
Now, after a long list of digital-only freebies, TVPC guys are back in town with their first physical release. This beatufiul piece of wax contains the two most sought after reworks from the camp. On the A side we have an amazing edit of - Powiedzmy To', originally recorded by famous Polish psychedelic bluesy-rockers. It comes from their lesser known LP, released in 1972 on state owned label.
This beautiful ballad, filled with sexual tension between two lovers, is transformed here into a late night classic by Zambon. He beefed the track with an extra drumkit, subtle synths & dub effects. The result is a truly Balearic gem straight from Eastern Europe.

The Flipside contains already famous edit of - Ucz Si y', one of the lesser known songs done by a band, who were the Polish answer to The Beatles. Pnk.Discorporation mixes hooks, riffs and verses from the original song with an infectious disco rhythm. Filled with youthful energy, this one works really well in peaktime sets. Also it's one of Todd Terje's favourites, who even included the track in his 2011 recap.
Both tracks were carefully mastered and loudly pressed to maximize your pleasure of discovering forgotten gems from Poland's rich musical past.

Cornelius Ferguson aka Traxman is from the west side of Chicago and one of the longest serving producers working in footwork with releases stretching back to the glory days of ghetto house on Dance Mania records in the nineties. He's also one of the co-founders of Chicago's two-decades-old Geto DJz clique and a member of DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn's Ghetto Teknitianz and was one of the creators of the legendary mixtapes on coloured cassettes which were the prototype for footwork's evolution. His unique brand of footwork is very strongly rooted in Chicago's history of soul, funk, house and ghetto trax; he's a veteran and renowned crate digger who has provided the sample sources for many of footwork's classic tracks over the years. His deep knowledge of music makes him one of the city's most versatile and skilled DJs and producers. Traxman's own productions are an incredibly well rounded suture between hip hop's natural funk and resourceful sample flipping, the hyper-kinetic innovation of footwork's stop-start, half-time-to-double-speed drum programming and a deep respect and understanding of Chicago's house music past that few producers can match; 'Da Mind Of Traxman' is a testament to this man's skills. 'Footworking On Air' starts the album in a relaxed and almost improvised mood with Kalimba melody, 303 acid line and martial drums. Then 'Itz Crack' puts strangely edited samples against echoey vocals and off kilter kicks to give the track a really unusual slip and slide feeling. Later, 'Let There Be Rockkkkk' takes an unusual sample source to build a track with a totally raucous rock vibe, whilst 'Rock You' simultaneously references house music's roots and a beautiful soul sample. '1988' is a tough 303 acid track with footwork drum patterns; 'Sound Filed' again tampers with house music's early rhythm tracks, bringing them up to date and speed with footwork's syncopations; while 'Work Me 2011' manages to fuse the soulfulness of deep house with the breathtaking energy of ghetto house and rave. Meanwhile, 'Lady Dro' makes good with some Mizell Brothers samples and loose congas, wrapping and looping them into a hypnotic vortex, while 'Setbacks' works a vocal and piano sample into tinkling abstraction. Traxman's skills are unmessable, you can tell from the minute the album starts that music is like breathing for him, and that the album also makes an incredible and skillful case for footwork as Chicago's very own sideways evolution through hip hop via house with a rich history of soul.

'All Nite' EP is the young Mancunian Walton's second set on Hyperdub, after his very well received 'Walton EP' debut for the label in 2011. Title cut 'All Nite' kicks it off with warm plucked strings, diva moans and lazer-like synths stretched to the point of anticipation over cracking grime handclaps and bass drums, until the track drops into a blocky bass line playing hide and seek with low arpeggios that spiral in and out of the mix, over a giant pounding metallic kick drum before layering on the warmth again. The whole track plays with a fine balance between warm, disco-like lushness and exuberant roughness. 'Mallet' is driving and darker, building detuned, bell-like tones over a 4/4 beat accented by breaks and fills and gaps, dropping into a big bass line and syncopations that disrupt the beat and bring the drama. 'Kush' is different again, taking the pace down with low end, synth hip hop with glassy chords, running over woozy pitch shifting Rhodes chords fed through a layer of crackly gauze.

I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made 'Fatherless' a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh's Dad's house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked 'music.' He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks 'Just - E' and 'I Need You' are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions... These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. So peace to Dj Cra$y wherever you are and respect to BrEaCh for putting these together. best, VonStroke.

Here on this EP, Vince has selected 3 of the albums tracks, as well an exclusive. Starting with a club version of the album's title track, Every Soul Needs A Guide. Its got roots in House, Techno and Latin Jazz, but in reality its a fusion of all of the above and displays some wonderful production techniques along the way.

Bristol hub Soul Motive scored a massive coup in enlisting Punch Drunk boss Peverelist to remix "Stableface", one of the standout tracks from Clouds Of Moments, the 2010 debut set from Lithuanian experimental dubstepper Eleven Tigers. That they choose to complement it with two further remixes is tantamount to treating us, with both Dark Sky and Macc on board to further re-contextualise the cracked atmospherics. In the hands of Dark Sky, "Stableface" is twisted into a brooding dark side steppah with subtle hints of jungle pressure pervading the lower reaches, the 50 Weapons trio playfully teasing with the vocal before dropping in a bassline that can only be described as rude. On the flip, Macc showcases his enviable drumming skills with a heavily cinematic roller of a remix dominated by those rumbling, live rhythms.

Last year was huge for young producer Marco Giuliani AKA Last Japan. With 'Qi' garnering huge support from industry and his remix of Crystal Fighters 'Xtatic Truth' appearing on TV series Skins Last Japan went on to release two further records on Southern Fried and gain mass support from the likes of Radio 1's Toddla T and DJ Target. 2011 and the rising star continues on the up and releases 'Settle Down/Girl featuring Bobbie Gordon' on Four40 Recordings. 'Settle Down' combines the heartfelt lyrics of Gordon as Last Japan's drawn out chord sequences squirm over a powerful and pushing sub bass; sterling remixes come from Bondax, Asa and Stumbleline. Second track 'Girl' speeds things up as a highly electronic concoction of bleeps form the captivating high end while more rumbling sub bass echoes below for depth.

Sam Russo's hunger to spread his ideas globally is driven by an open minded approach to the floor. Sam's take on electronic music is rooted in the smooth rhythms of US house and garage, tempered by the expansive deepness of Basic Channel and Maurizio. He is currently expressing these ideas through his own solo productions and a prolific series of studio partnerships.

Starting off at the age of 18 in London's east end, Sam cut his teeth on the Shoreditch circuit, with gigs at spots like Cargo, Herbal. After a move to Southampton he became resident at the city's notorious Junk Club. Here he gained the invaluable experience of setting the atmosphere at heavyweight parties like Cocoon and Circo Loco.

A laid back character, Russo is equally at home in the tranquil surrounds of Bournemouth or in the hustle of London. At both of these bases he has forged strong relationships with a pair of the UK's current hot properties. On the south coast with Tsuba artist Huxley and in the capital Leftroom boss Matt Tolfrey.

Keen to shed the reserve that many engineers feel when experimenting with new ideas and techniques, his reputation spread quickly. Soon a friendship was struck with Craig Richards, and their studio partnership is now bearing fruit. Red hot productions will soon drop from an as-yet unnamed new imprint conceived by the pair.

The legendary Fabric residents out of the box ideas are nurturing ideas in Russo far beyond his years. As well as absorbing the creativity of the Fabric resident in the studio it would be impossible for young producer not to take on board Richards' gospel behind the decks.

Russo prides himself on finding unique tracks no one has heard of or played before. With an attitude that keeps alive the true spirit of DJ'ing, he thrives on building up a track library on both vinyl and digital. Able to blend both old and new, his ever expanding appreciation of music and rhythm gives him the edge as he continues to build his burgeoning reputation.
