A year on from the label's last broadcast, ScanOne's Yellow Machines steps back out of the shadows with another heavyweight sci-fi electro-step clarion call from the border badlands where bass music meets electronica's unmapped empty quarter. 'Sub-Prime' is an eight minute cross-genre epic, built from muscular electro synth lines, drum & bass sonar bleeps, and twisted digital dub breaks. Its intricately structured post-garage/dubstep-slanted rhythmic form leads the listener through a series of peaks and troughs, yet the overall impression is of a relentless passage around the edges of dark machine beats, where the ghosts of metallic electro mingle with the blythe spirits of bass-fuelled techno. 'Minotaur' is a seven-minute prowling sci-fi creeper, with chilling atmospheric pads progressing throughout whilst old school hardcore beats weave in and out of the sub-bass framework. The most recognisably 'dubstep' track of the two, 'Minotaur' rolls like an armoured assault vehicle across pock-marked terrain, with oscillating low frequencies acting as the driving force while rhythmic breaks burst above the scorched earth and strategic drops create pockets of false calm within the militaristic marching beats. Riddim in collision with industrialized electronica, like Claro Intellecto meets Loefah in the year 2020. Darkstar's last single on Hyperdub, 'Need You', released early in the summer of 2008, was Pitchfork's # 1 dubstep single of the year, and turned many towards their developing melancholic sound. Championed by Radiohead, they recently returned the nod of appreciation by recording a version of 'Videotape' for Mary Anne Hobbs' new Planet Mu collection, 'Wild Angels'. Now the much-anticipated vinyl release of 'Aidy's Girl Is A Computer' is at last set, having first made its presence felt 12 months ago as part of Darkstar's contribution to last year's Radio One Hyperdub showcase broadcast. On 'Aidy's Girl...', the duo confidently define and refine their catchy melodic sound with a song that's perfectly pop, while at the same time possessed of strange and intriguing bittersweet machine soul. Over at the other side, Detroit teenage wunderkind and Omar S protégé Kyle Hall recalibrates the original into a blissful robotic Motor City house opus on his Oats B So Good remix, with a massaging bass line that sounds like sunshine on melting wax.

Apollo presents a sublime mini album from Melbourne duo Albrecht La'Brooy AKA Sean La'Brooy and Alex Albrecht which will appeal to fans of Suzanne Kraft, Tornado Wallace and Dawn Of Midi. The release is inspired by a visit to the beautiful Wilson's Promontory, a remote national park on the South East coast of Australia. The tracklisting runs from morning through to nightime and tries to capture the feeling of each snapshot in time.
Their music is a delicate fusion of ambient electronic textures, live instrumentation and field recordings - gauzy guitar melodies, dreamy synth arpeggios and throbbing rthymic pulses that feels equally at home in outdoor amphitheatres as well as dark nightclubs
Alternating between their cosmic/balearic deep house and more laid back introspections, Tidal River's gorgeously lush sounds are remarkably consistent - rich, warm and organic with an emphasis on atmosphere and the transportation of the listener. Each track was the fruit of Albrecht La'Brooy's long improvised jamming process Heavily involved in their local scene, the duo co-run the Analogue Attic imprint, "Championing this gentler side of electronic music in Australia' which has proven a fertile incubator for their own development, across a series of ambitious and ear catching EPS, alongside local cohorts such as Sleep D, Rings Around Saturn and Udmo.
