Various - Antique Fragments Ep

Antique Fragments EP is the third release of our Kommuna Tapes imprint. The A side starts with a quirky fast-paced track created by a mysterious producer named Schematix in 1997. Thinktank, an electro/breakbeat act who signed his first and unique EP only a few years later in 2000, takes us on a punchy yet dreamy techno journey. On the flip side, after Schematix undusted his hardware to extract the stems for the occasion, wizard Sergio Moreira mastered the challenge of creating a slower and deeper version of the track, while upcoming Madrid talent Javier Moreno closes the release with a bouncy acid burner.

Track by track, we build a Kommuna of artists who share our insatiable appetite for music discovery, guided by a certain vision of the dancefloor: deep stripped-down grooves, sometimes challenging, always with character.

A brand new studio album from Gorillaz titled The Now Now will be released by Parlophone Records on 29th June.

The Now Now is 11 all-new songs from the World's Most Successful Virtual Act, produced by Gorillaz, with James Ford and Remi Kabaka, and recorded in London, in February this year.

The album sessions for The Now Now saw the band largely eschewing guest stars, taking it back to the core creative crew: blue-haired, sweet-natured dreamer 2D on vocals, whip-smart Japanese badass Noodle on guitar, not forgetting Brooklyn-born philosopher and the meat-behind-the-beat Russel Hobbs on drums. And with Murdoc Niccals temporarily indisposed, bass duties on the new album have been taken up by erstwhile Gangreen Gang member Ace.

A sun-drenched new video for first track Humility, starring a roller-skating 2D and a busking Jack Black, was directed by Jamie Hewlett and filmed entirely in Venice Beach, California last month

INDUCTION - LITURGICAL HYMNS REMIXES

Induction's Remix EP can be considered as a true Ravage family affair. The EP starts and ends with takes on Theological Explanation; Tadeo delivers an hypnotic version with a lot of drive, and - it may sound counterintuitive - Zadig dives into the deep as well, with an outstanding, euphoric and ethereal mix. Both tracks turn out to be quite true-to-self reworks of the offbeat original. On A2, Birth of Frequency altered the ambient intro Epitrachelion into a soft, melodic, functional electro track that oozes refinement and a bit nostalgic comfort.

The B-side starts with As Patria's signature sound, giving a new interpretation to a previously unreleased production called Oxygen Swamp. Melancholic hisses, softly rattling hats and light synth-work all contribute to the overall feeling of their remix. The same goes for Samuli Kemppi, who took on Back in my Amnesia, giving it the ghetto-house-treatment, indulged with rave influences.

Kevin Murning - Mode's Arp

Kevin Murning is a musician, producer and DJ from Cape Town, South Africa. He describes his music as fake jazz, probably because he dropped out of jazz school. At 23 years old, Kevin's music is youthful yet precise and his debut EP offers an intriguing cross-section into his varied musical experience to date. The release comes out via Cape Town based imprint, Quit Safari, home to some of SA's most exciting producers.

Kevin's debut comes in the form of a 5-track EP called Mode's Arp. Comprised of 3 originals and 2 remixes, the release serves as a dual functional one with tracks for home and club use. Taking 2 years to fully complete, Mode's Arp is a wonderfully considered body of work and speaks volumes about Kevin's talent and his ability to create music that is beautiful and banging. Both Kevin and Quit Safari label head, Zanasi Wifi, are on remix duty for the EP, taking the originals and recontextualising them into high octane percussive workouts.

DJ support already includes The Maghreban, Turbojazz, Severino, Laurent Garnier, Mystic Bill, Edmondson and more.

New York's Chase Smith brings back a funky version of late 1990's electro-disco. New York's Kid Ginseng brings a combination of mid-1980s New York/LA electro to the table. This is a very diversely packed compilation EP with the loudness and depth typical of Kraftjerkz.

Ruby Rushton - Trudi's Songbook: Volume Two

Tenderlonious led jazz outfit Ruby Rushton drop their second album of 2017. Following on from the success of 'Trudi's Songbook: Volume One' the band are back with their highly anticipated 'Volume Two'. Comprised of a further six cuts the listener is treated to another journey through modern day jazz!

Stand out tracks include "Tisbury Truckin", which is a stunning opener! Starting with an atmospheric soundscape it unexpectedly drops into a neck-snapping hip-hop groove with a punchy melodic line before effortlessly sliding into an up-tempo, afro-beat inspired rhythm with strong solos from trumpet and keys in tow. "Song For Christopher" is a heartfelt ballad, which begins with a touching flute solo and continues to take the listener on a journey through the emotions, ending in a crescendo of optimism - a fitting tribute to the late Christopher Rushton.

"Charlotte Emma Victoria" is another strong track and includes some tasteful sousaphone and trombone parts to add extra oomph to its bounce, accompanied by a soaring saxophone solo by band leader Edward Cawthorne (aka Tenderlonious). The album ends with a classic Herbie Hancock jazz-fusion standard, "Butterfly", which the band handle with finesse. A fitting cover that I have no doubt would impress its original writers.

'Trudi's Songbook: Volume Two' is a fantastic album, which further solidifies Ruby Rushton's place on the modern jazz scene. This is a must have album that would hold its own in any jazz enthusiasts record collection - make sure you check it out!

DJ Lilocox - Paz & Amor

The sprawling ambience we hear throughout "Paz & Amor" unveils the present stage of the fascinating aesthetic progression that Lilocox has been sharing with the world ever since this Eurochild of Cape Verdean descent started to produce his original music. Lilocox comes out in open field, with a lot more space, building the groove around complex rhythm grids now unfolding peacefully. He scored a bouncier underground hit with "La Party" back in 2015, coming from a background of intricate batida drum patterns but his sights reached further and further away into deeper territory."Ritmos E Melodias" seems to split into two parallel tracks at some point with the house beat balanced by a background rattle more commonly associated with the slower tarraxo vibes. "Samba" is fully-formed from the very beginning but the kick only comes in around the 2-minute mark, joining a bleepy substitute for a bassline. In fact, you will find this music practically does away with the need for a bassline because the rhythm inventions keep the feet moving effortlessly. It might seem strange that a genre seemingly rooted in classic house can stay focused on the dancefloor without a bassline, but the skeleton of these tracks is naturally strong and provides all the necessary ground for ambience and melody to shine.

And they do shine universally on "Fronteiras", an intensely emotional and catchy tune WITH a bassline, though very discrete and minimal. It follows the beat more or less independently, but its presence helps to consolidate the human bond we should all feel when exposed to these celestial harmonies. "Fronteiras" seems to contradict its very title.

Catz 'n Dogz - Rave History

To know what's up right now, we must understand what went down in history... 'Rave History': Easily one of Catz 'n Dogz most evocative, classically-informed and ferociously euphoric pieces of work to date, this is a celebration of every black wax brick laid in the foundations of dance music culture. Every hand that was ever raised in sweaty exultation. Every stranger whoever got hugged on the dancefloor for no reason but pure love for the moment. Every whistle. Every horn. Every damn time. From its quintessential break to its iconic vocal via its sizzling bass-heavy groove; 'Rave History' is the ultimate finale piece, a show-stopping opener or a wild mid-set excursion. It resonates with everything that's relevant now and everything that's ever been relevant. Loaded with pure positivity, this will complement any style of DJ set, any crowd, any age, any country. This is our DNA. For added euphoric stimuli, the Szczecin boys have also thrown in a kickless hype tool in the form of the feel-heavy Life Mix. Choral pads, cascading FX, dramatic one-strike piano notes, splashing cymbals and that almighty vocal sample that comes with one essential message every single one of us can raise our sweaty hands and hug strangers to: no matter how weird things feel in the world right now, when we're together with like-minded dancing neighbours, everything is going to be ALL RIGHT.

Various - Selectors Assemble, Vol. 3

We proceed with 'Selectors Assemble Volume Three'. The latest release from the CoOp Presents label headed by IG Culture and Alex Phountzi, and the latest instalment of EPs featuring an array of artists, focusing on the wealth of talent that exists within the London Bruk scene and beyond, a continuation of the sonic spirit brought to life by the legendary West London movement.

Selectors Assemble is an ever-growing family - this six-track selection seeks to introduce more of the collective to the masses, and bring further heat from some of the squad already established. Call it what you will genre-wise, this EP sweeps styles, and shamelessly laces up another assortment of certified dancefloor fire. The previous two volumes were supported by a wide-ranging squad of DJs in recent times, including Toddla T, Mr. Scruff, Benji B, Josey Rebelle, Alex Nut, Shy One, Marc Mac, Lefto, Kev Beadle, Nick Luscombe, Simbad, ThrisTian, Stuart Patterson, Bradley Zero & Mr Thing, to name a few.

'Volume Three' kicks off with the deeply prolific German trio, Soul Parlor, who've been releasing a ton of music & remixes, and DJing worldwide for two decades now, here providing 'One 4 U' - bleeps, bassline and beats, with some twisted sonics and reversed pads along for the ride. Next up, label bosses IG & Phountzi (aka NameBrandSound) revisit a classic from Quango and the amazing talent of Eska on the vocal, giving this one a deliciously fresh lick for 2018 - 'Rock It Tonight' has all the ingredients to be a Summer anthem. James Rudie returns for Volume Three with 'BoxD', on a soulful 4/4 vibe once again, this one adding a little bruk swing and some smoothed out funk atop. Next we introduce Xtra Bruk to the crew - a mastering engineer by day, he's been releasing d'n'b and house records since the late 90's - here with something called 'Samba', more now-skool broken styles, with some serious bassweight in a wobbly UKG-esque style. Gonzi steps up and in from South London with 'Bawss', a seriously innovative cut that flits and chops between 4/4 and bruk, with a space-funk synth that encompasses a tinge of deep Detroit, a pinch of Kaytranada / Soulection style sonics, and a slight brush of jazz into the mix. Finally the one Entek returns to close out the selection with 'Brukway', which pretty much does what it says on the tin - straight up heads down synthed-out boogie business.

Selectors Assemble appear on rotation monthly on Worldwide FM, as well as playing numerous other shows and dances individually, and building momentum on their new base, The Flex, a multi purpose warehouse space in East London. The Summer's looking set to be a hot one for CoOp Presents, this is just another taste...

Various - Death To Digital Volume 2 EP

* The Death To Digital series on Kniteforce serves to introduce new talent, and at the same time bring a wide variety of styles on to one EP. Still keeping within the 1991-1996 era, this EP brings together Ant To Be and Shadowplay, a collaboration resulting in a deceptively cheerful piano tune for the summer. Meanwhile, Luna-C & Saiyan do the exact opposite with 'Demogorgon' - possibly the darkest tune Kniteofrce has released since The Trip's 'Snowball' back in 1992. The style flips again to slightly faster and definitely a tad cheesier with Luna-C's 'My Kinda Rush, and the EP is rounded out with a rare 4x4 track in the 1996 hardcore style, 'Fat Hands' by Paul Bradley. So named because...well...no one knows.

Hypocrisy Is the Greatest Luxury is the debut album by the industrial hip hop formation The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. Years after its release it was recognized as one of most underrated albums from 1992. Michael Franti created a piece where capitalism, consumerism and political changes weren't avoided. The issues he raps about are focused on the changing world and the way people interacts with each other. The emotional power and anger are part of the musical changes. On the album you'll find an stunning revision of the Beatnigs' Television, the Drug of the Nation' and the political insanity of The Winter of the Long Hot Summer'. Lyrically and musically it is still vital today, even when the jazz poetry comes alive.

In their short existence of only three year the duo Michael Franti and Rono Tse made of The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy a successful band in the underground scene.

Futuro de Hierro - Paso En El Vacío

Viktor Lux Crux is a key figure in Barcelona's vibrant post-industrial scene as a musician, producer and co-founder of the label Màgia Roja. He has performed more than 300 shows, almost 200 of them touring abroad in Europe and the US as Futuro de Hierro and with past bands Ordre Etern and Qa'a. Collaborator of Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten), Nurse With Wound, Paddy Shine and Chris Haslam (Gnod), and others. Among many other places he has performed in 4 editions of Sonar Festival, Incubate Festival, Klangbad Festival, 2 editions of Primavera Sound and Periferias Festival. As Comisarios de la Luz DJ he has performed more than 200 sessions in the last three years.

With Futuro de Hierro he mixes the legacy of Esplendor Geometrico and Throbbing Gristle with the heavyness of Swans or early Laibach and transcends the nihilism of the genere creating a cosmogony of songs where the personal, the esoteric, the present and the future intertwine. His live shows are a visceral and energetic deal, a hands-on approach to electronic music with an unseen control of rythmic feedback, dynamics and noise.

His latest 12 Un Paso en el Vacío' has been co-released by Màgia Roja and Opal Tapes the 28th of June 2017.

DJ Ham - Most Impressive EP

* Dj Ham returns to Kniteforce with a superb 10' vinyl. Now largely known for his releases as Hamilton on D'n'B titan RAM records, Dj Ham has always been one of the most talented producers in either scene, and is respected as a pioneer and producer of some seriously classic tunes. His new Kniteforce 10' showcases his skill while keeping firmly within the old school soundscapes. Most Impressive is both dark and technoish, with twisted mentasms and a dark lords samples, while the inexplicably named Chicken Tune is a breezy, uplifting summer vibe anthem.

Ant To Be - Adventures Of Soundbwoy EP

* The Russian maestro strikes again. Following his widely praised debut EP, this second outing on Knitebreed should really cement Ant To Bes reputation as a man who can, and a man who does. Adding distinct jungle and dub elements to his already diverse sound, this EP once again runs through various styles of hardcore. Each track is beautifully crafted, sounding deceptively simple when, on closer examination, they are far from it. Earth Trax & Newborn Jr. - Maze EP

Hypnotizing Nostalgia that Dictates the Dance Floor.
.
With previous releases on Rythm Section, Echovolt and Les Yeux Orange, Earth Trax & Newborn Jr. are unapologetically consistent in building a legacy. The Maze EP is the fourth collective delivery of the duo, sent off into the world by Dopeness Galore. While hypnotizing synths dictate the dance floor, it is hard to resist the Balearic arrangements of new wave nostalgia. The record elevates through soothingly repetitive Ambient dreamscapes, while minimalist entrancement pulls us right back into underground territory. The EP represents a side A. meant for club settings and a more Ambient side B. Once the vocals on A2 set the tone, we bear witness to what seems to be the true ethos of the 'Maze EP':
"Where There's a Will, There's a Way".

Ant To Be - Untitled Riddim EP

* Ant To Be's debut EP is stunningly accomplished, to the point where you have to wonder how an unknown artist could have this much skill in the first place. Having won a competition to remix a track from Kniteforce Records, he was signed to Knitebreed almost immediately. His music is old skool in the traditional sense, but produced with a clear vision and clarity, and even though he is comfortable in various styles, there is a definite 'Ant To Be-ness' about each track. The A-side shows the lighter, piano styled tunes the Knitebreed label was traditionally known for, but the treasure is on the flip, with standout track 'Nobody Like Me' being a firm favorite. Dark, but not miserable, and with a sly sense of humor, it is the winner on an EP containing a variety of winners.

Orson Wells - Pneumatics

Orson Wells

Pneumatics

2x12inchPLAYRJC047
Live at Robert Johnson
22.09.2017

lvin Toffler was overwhelmed. When in the morning of October 4th, 1988-it was his 60th birthday-he was starring with a still somewhat absent look into a bowl of cornflakes, he thought that in the surface structure of the yellowish shimmering milk which was making an emulsion with the maple syrup and slowly but irreversibly corroding the crunchy crystals on the flakes, he could see through a window into a timeless dimension. Toffler, who at that time had reached the peak of his fames as a future scientist, was sustainably disturbed from his peek into this extra temporary peephole. In none of his books-'Future Shock' had just been released with yet another edition featuring a proud printed note on the book cover stating 'more than 5 million copies in print'-did he ever mention this occurrence. Even after his death in June 2016, no note on this incident could ever be found in his estate. The 'flake dimension' as Toffler called it in notes which were later shredded remains a secret of opaque, hard-to-grasp radiant power.

Maybe it's too simple to describe 'Pneumatics' as a creation coming from this cornflake world Without doubt. Are there any more precise terms or instruments to determine the multifacetedness and beyond-timeliness of the 'Pneumatics' soundscape There are still unknown. 'Pneumatics' is, after releases at Innervisions, Die Orakel und his own label Sound Mirror, the debut album of Orson Wells (as long as you don't count in 'Jupiter' - Wells's first LP which was released in 2014 with 48 copies on cassette-have fun digging for rarities and bargains!).
Perhaps Wells, known in Frankfurt under his real name Lennard Poschmann and as an employee at the record store Tactile, is only a messenger. Or a psychic. The sound manifesto that he apparently transmits from Toffler's secret dimension tells of a city of upside down pyramids ('Tianon'), of passes into the land of the five elements ('Multipass') and dead straight four-to-the-floor lines which appear bended within the spherical dimension (''Geodesic'). These beats are right on the heels of the ones of Intersteller Fugitives; the strings sound like that at any moment a vocal sample edited by Moodyman could warp over through the Cornflake wormhole. Pneumatics is the science of all technological applications powered by condensed and often by quite heated air. It is a matter of mechanics, compression, jackhammer, ramblings, high pressure levels, valves for blowing of steam. On 'Pneumatics' it's all about this. And more. Orson Wells's album gets to the point of the post-retro futuristic state of the dancefloors of the house and techno clubs of this planet. It is like a peek into another dimension, right on the golden cut of spacetime geometry.

Arandel 'Turbatrix' (Computer Club)

'Turbatrix', the eighth release on Sheffield's Computer Club imprint, is provided by mysterious French artist Arandel. No newcomer to the musical spectrum, Arandel has long been associated with the French label InFiné, alongside global names such as Carl Craig and Apparat.

'Locus I' surprises as analogue rasps and pings spar with lush synths and a driving 4/4 rhythmic code. Key track 'Locus II' is a siren to the ghosts of Sheffield's electronic musical heritage, with relentless bleeps and a concrete sub-bass.

'Locus III' is a midnight romp through a neon-tinged city where only the holograms know your name. The fourth and final track, a blissed-out ambient piece soaked in celestial sounds, is a meditative end to a thrilling journey of invention and musical mastery.

Limited 140g 12" white vinyl, 45 RPM + download code

* "Enter Rogue Style, an EP series dedicated to b-boy culture, to share their own b-boy story through the language of drum & bass and footwork." Bandcamp daily, June 2017
For Rogue Style 2 EP we continue the mission for a global b-boy homage with artists from England (Digital), USA (6Blocc, Calculon, Shamanga), Finland (Fanu) and Iceland (Agzilla).

Digital: "Myself and my older brother have been into hip hop and b-boy culture from an early age. It showed me music wasn't just something you danced to, it demonstrated togetherness, passion and the amazing life you can have through music."

6Blocc: "I was lucky enough to be born in 1970, so around 1982 when the NYC club / DJ / MC movement made its way to Los Angeles I started my DJ career playing hip hop, electro funk and DJ battles. In the late 90's I produced hard jungle vinyl releases under the name B-Boy 3000 because to me jungle music was hip hop fast forwarded 1000 years ahead in a time when lyrics no longer exist and all is just sample sounds modified by computers."

Calculon: "As a teenager in San Diego I was exposed to underground hip hop Kool Keith and DJ Shadow, and it was scratching that inspired me to save up and get my first set of turntables. Going out to local 'cypher' events in the late 90s/early 2000s was inspiring as it was clear there was a community of DJs and MCs and dancers and artists that lived and breathed this music."

Shamanga: "B-boying has been a huge part of my life since I was nine years old. I began DJ'ing in 1988. One particular crew, 7A3 inspired me to take my abilities to a new level. I purchased an HR-16 drum machine and bought a bass guitar. A few years later, a couple of the gangsters in my neighborhood wanted to become rappers, so they bought an Ensoniq EPS16+. Once they realized they didn't want to learn how to program the machine, they gave it to me, with one stipulation: I was to produce beats for them to rap over. This was 1991. I have not stopped since."

Fanu: "No-one can deny that drum machines did play a big part in creation of hip hop. In my tune for Defrostatica, I wanted to employ my Machinedrum for the job. Those who know hip hop may spot a familiar sample or two there as well."

Agzilla: "The disciplines of hip hop, graffiti, turntablism, and breakdancing have been subtle undercurrents throughout my design and music. The era of discovering groundbreaking sounds, dancing, and style in the 80's left a deep imprint on me. And out of that wellspring grew my journey into the liberating universe of electronic music. The aura of b-boy culture has been with me ever since and remains both fascinating and deeply inspirational."

Permanent Vacation
03.04.2018

Born in the high north of Germany and now a Berlin resident, Ralf Schmidt aka Aera first appeared on the electronic music map when he established his own Aleph Music label back in 2010. With only a handful of releases, Aera was able to lay out his very own musically topography on the cutting edges between house, psychedelia and breakbeats.

This colourful mix culminated on his debut album 'Offseason Traveller' in 2013, resonating the past forty years of electronic music, which brought him the attention of a wider audience as well as fellow djs and producers. So it was a logical consequence that his talent also attracted other labels and lead to widely praised releases on Innervisions, Maeve or John Talabot's Hivern Discs. With these, Aera's sound bloomed further into bubbly acid and trancey territorries and his fine reputation as a singular producer, travelling dj and remixer flourished.

With - The Sound Path' Aera continues his musical travels and Permanent Vacation is gladly hitchhiking on that ride. His second album is the most coherent and definitely most personal work to date. Here, he has perfected his sound even further - adding nuances from the meadows of New Age, Kraut cliffs and high-flying kites of Ambient. Complete with the cinematic and nature-esque qualities of Ralf's music, it will draw you in deeply through a great variety of landscapes before your inner eye. However, you'll never lose track, because this path is beautifully illuminated.

Melatonin Man - Cruise Control Love

After last year's track Garrol on the Paerels compilation for island trips, Tammo Hesselink aka Melatonin Man is back with Cruise Control Love. The title track is a ravey disco jam, based around an acidic bass-line, that soundtracked many of our afterhours already. The B-side sees the release of 2 newer cuts - Breaky beats and trancy melodies of this young talent with much more to come.
