Genetix - Genetix Part 1

After ending last year with successful debut releases from Farkas and LAXX, Biscuit Factory Records returns with its first release of 2013. The first of a two part release sees established Bournemouth based producers, Genetix, bring their sound to the imprint. The A side is Goin' In. An eerie intro, layered with vocals, quickly leads into an unsuspecting drop. Deep, sub low basslines pulsate throughout with perfectly placed melodic stabs giving the track its undeniable presence in any club. This is Dubstep in its purest form. Mindrise on the flip maintains the moody and sinister feel to this release. Rolling drums and bongos come in straight from the start, leading into a drop that will get you drawing for your best tribal skank. Genetix excellently demonstrate their ability to produce a track that combines both the vintage bass-led sound, along with fresh and crisp percussion. Available as a digital bonus track, 24/7 Reflex is another deep and dark track that oozes with the original half-step sound. Again, Genetix effortlessly merge tribal sounding drums and bongos along with raw, aggressive synths. All three tracks firmly cement the continuing intention and ethos of the label; to keep pushing good quality underground music into an ever evolving scene. They have all being receiving massive support from key DJ's within the last few months. Featured in Walsh's and N Type's sets, they have quickly become sought after tracks by many other producers and DJ's alike. Support also coming from Hatcha (KISS FM, Sin City Records), Skream & Benga (BBC Radio One) and Youngsta (Tempa, Rinse FM).

Maduk is definetely one of the biggest drum 'n bass talents emerging from Holland this year. Originally working the Amsterdam house/techno scene his drum 'n bass production got picked up rather quickly by Liquicity Recordings.
Now he's getting ready for his first release on the Fokuz imprint and delivers two great tracks for this 12''. The A side 'Hold On' has an epic drop and involves some great synth work, some powerfull liquid action going on here..The flipside 'Never Again' is the perfect closer to this EP. It has a catchy piano riff and smooth chords, it will set dancefloors on fire while the occasional vocal snippet adds an element of intrigue to the track.

Overlook / Blocks & Escher - Three Shards / Embers

In a year that has seen the label grow from infancy to an outlet receiving acclaim far beyond its years; Narratives has found its way into the record boxes of the scenes elite including Rockwell, Friction, Teebee, Loxy & Marcus Intalex to name a few and whilst maintaining the 170 bpm tempo, has caught the attention of other genres by ways of DJ's Laurent Garnier, Kuedo, and Rob Da Bank. The previous single closed 2012 on a high and saw the label earning Single of the Year awards (Everyday Junglist), a place in BBC Radio 1's Drum and Bass 2012 round up, and the blessing of pioneer Goldie who described Narratives Music as 'This is art'. Narratives Music marks its first year as a label with release number four and with it, the first piece of original music to grace the label from an artist other than label owners Blocks and Escher. The young talent Overlook steps up to deliver a track capturing the very ethos of the label and continues from where Narratives 003 left off. Cinematic soundscapes give way to a rhythm work out that nods to the works of Photek and Source Direct but drags and kicks those sounds into the future. Relentless and unnerving this one never stays still, progressing and developing for what seems a super short 7 minutes. Blocks and Escher retake the reigns for the flip side and remind us that this label will never be pigeon holed, it wants to surprise. 'Embers' unleashes again the emotive keys and melancholic synths revealed previously in this pairs music but carries a weight and character that takes it far beyond shoe gazing ambient. It feels like a track pulling against the chains of DnB and as a contrast to the other side of the single, leaves the listener in wonder of where the label is heading next. Mixmag D&B Single of the Month - March 2013. Teebee - 'I love how they don't give a fuck about fitting the norm Refreshing. Future.' Ulterior Motive - 'Love this single' Skeptical - 'Play this every set and have done for a while.' DJ Support includes: Goldie, Teebee, Skeptical, Loxy, Paradox, Doc Scott, Ulterior Motive.

Unknown Artist - Get Down / Nobody's Truth 10"!

The first vinyl slab of Capital Bass imprint comes in form of 10" white-label from an incognito artist.

A-side is a dark tech-bass track. What does really make it stand out is that driving analog bassline chord: you can easily imagine yourself dancing your ass off to it at some obscure warehouse party. B-side is a lighter affair with dubby atmospheric chords and pitch shifted vocal cuts.

Amoss - Footloose Vip / Lost Souls

*Footloose VIP: Amoss bring a 2012 rethink of their track Footloose from their 2011 'Spectrum EP', delivering a broodingly heavy take on the original.
*The atmospheric intro sets the stage for what is perhaps the duo's most sinister tune to date. With a quick build and the original's dub style vocal hook, the drop hits with a shattering, industrial style weight.
Booming kicks, combined with smacking snares and shuffling hi-hats sit atop of a pulsing sub whilst airy side chained effects provide a grooving movement throughout.
*With the second drop a distorted synth delivers a warehouse rave style attitude topping off this grungy slab of steppy drum & bass.
*Lost Souls: The b side to this 12" demonstrates Amoss' ability to combine breakneck drums with the atmospheric qualities of a horror film. Droning fx moulded around twisting, distorted stabs take the forefront as they envelop the surging breakbeat.
*This is a true slice of the murkiest 170bpm music around!

Naibu - Fall Ep : Autumn Comes / Wrong

*Welcome to the Fall EP, the new release from Horizons Music, and Naibu.
*Paris' Naibu has compiled yet another masterpiece of melodic and musical offerings, creating his own world across six tracks which exhibit his natural grasp of emotion, feeling and destiny. Drum & bass, and electronic music as a whole is taking a step into the future in 2013, and this step is being led by visionaries like Naibu.
*The EP will be a vinyl release, showing the artist's and label's love of the format, and the meaningful place it has in the hearts of collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. And the EP has the feel of a collectors' item about it too.
*The third plate is begun by the retrofuturistic Autumn Comes, with its sweeping strings and contemplative synth work, which is added to closer Wrong, which is as calming and meditative a piece of music as you are likely to find all year long, with electro-topped drums which put one in mind of classic Dope Dragon material.

Rene Lavice - Insidious

Rene Lavice

Insidious

CDRAMMLP16CD
Ram Records
18.02.2013

So the dictionary tells us, but if the word insidious bears any relation to Rene LaVice's rise to drum & bass prominence it's that it is the exact opposite. Smashing his way to the top of the game within a year with nothing but a hugely positive effect, Rene LaVice is poised to unleash his debut album on Ram Records following just a handful of releases.
*It would be foolish to think that Rene LaVice and his music weren't ready for such a bold step, though. Last year saw his tunes find a home on the playlists of tastemakers such as Annie Mac, Nick Grimshaw and MistaJam, become highlights in the sets of Ram boss Andy C amongst many of his D&B peers, top the sales charts amidst fierce competition from all manner of bass music and storm into Mixmag's top 50 tracks of the year.
*How exactly, you may ask, has a relatively new artist from Canada managed to achieve all of this in 2012 Your first listen to his debut album 'Insidious' will undoubtedly answer that.
*From the opening bars of 'So Inspired To Fail' to the closing notes of 'Absolute Monster' this LP is really a lesson in creating beautifully crafted drum & bass. 'Perfect World' and 'This Is Conflict' are prime examples of Rene's ability to put together tracks that will undoubtedly smash dancefloors.
*Throughout 'Insidious' has nothing but breezy production and genuine soul to offer the listener. 'The Way You Love Me' draws you in with subtle vocal hooks and chest-warming Reeses, 'Rude Selection' sees Rene drop the tempo and team up with Trinity Chris for a crunching, grinding slice of hip hop heavy bass music, while the album's title track is a dizzying blend of sultry vocals and Prototype Years style drum & bass.
*Drawing together classic sounds and giving them a fresh lease of life is Rene LaVice's mainstay, crafting drum & bass that manages to feel nostalgic, infused with timeless, classic intent, but always up to date with fresh production values. Rene LaVice is a producer who wears his influences on his musical sleeve and always brings them together in a new and exciting way, and his debut album is a testament to that incredible talent.

Wilkinson - Need To Know Feat Iman / 'direction

* Never resting on his laurels Wilkinson continues to assure himself a place at the very top of the drum & bass pile with another incredible single for Ram Records. Following on from 'Automatic' / 'Hands Up' a massive single which received huge support from tastemakers around the world including Radio 1's Annie Mac and MistaJam, Wilkinson is ready to drop 'Need To Know' and 'Direction' - two essential slices of D&B that will have dance floors jumping for months to come.
* First up 'Need To Know' gets you into the mood with rolling jungle breaks and strummed guitars that pave the way for Iman's beautiful vocals. And by the time Wilkinson unleashes his euphoric bassline and infectious melodies you're begging for the release. Moving and progressing throughout, Wilkinson creates a stunningly simple but undeniably catchy track that will sound perfect on the dancefloor, over the radio or cranked up on your home stereo. This one has 'Anthem' stamped all over it!
* But those of you who prefer your D&B a bit darker will not be disappointed either, as 'Direction' embraces all kinds of filth and then throws them back at you covered in bass! Intensely dark atmospherics open the way for a grimy Reese bass, vocal snippets and echoed sound FX that combine to create an absolute monster of a tune. 'Direction' is sure-fire dance floor material destined to destroy clubs whenever it's dropped.
* Yet again Wilkinson delivers two incredible slices of drum & bass that will undoubtedly be the soundtrack to many a night out this winter, proving himself to be one of the hottest producers on the block in the process.

Ruffhouse - Pellet / Classified

RUFFHOUSE is a collective consisting of PESSIMIST, VEGA and COOPER. The trio decided to join forces at the start of 2012 and have since been gaining support from some of the major players in the Drum and Bass scene including Loxy, dBridge, Doc Scott and Skeptical. With a distinct and recognisable sound, Ruffhouse are bridging the gap between the modern and the old, the deep and the dark. The lads first met 3 years ago, at Vega's bi-monthly event 'Abstractions' in Bristol, quickly realising their shared passion for similar styles of music. From there, collaborations and experimenting in the studio together has led to the development of what we now know as Ruffhouse. "Basically we had all been toying with the idea of starting a production crew as we are all influenced drum and bass wise by people like The Horsemen (Loxy, Keaton, Dylan & Ink), Bad Company and Vicious Circle. The thing we liked about those guys was the whole unity and crew vibe that they all had." Pellet and Classified is the first vinyl release for promising Bristol based trio, both tracks featuring heavily in the sets of Loxy, dBridge, Doc Scott and Skeptical.

Various - Programmed V1.0 2x12"

Various

Programmed V1.0 2x12"

2x12inchPRGRAM006
Program
06.02.2013

he vibes just keep on flowing at the PROGRAM HQ... Battering their way into the new year with a quartet of forward-thinking grooves, the label's sixth release is chock-a-block with floor busters.
*Nitri ignites proceedings with stealth-like prowess. Opening with a series of infectious clicks and whirrs, his engine purrs with a pensive funk that isn't realised fully until the delicious vocal and bassline bounce kick in. The epitome of a contemporary roller, this stripped back groove attack has been a highlight of Andy C's sets for the past few months, causing major commotions amongst both the raving crew and fellow DJs whenever he drops it.
*Audio & Meth follow. And they do so with an almighty switch-flip. Hot on the heels of their monstrous 'Gamma' on Audio's latest album 'Soul Magnet', the duo continue to strut their heavyweight co-lab stuff with 'Alone'. Drenched in drama and grizzling bass tears, 'Alone' opens with a cavalcade of haunting horns before dropping into an all-out filth workout. Spitting snub-nosed sonics, it's like the late 90s all over again... But with production skills our last-century D&B forefathers could only dream of.
*Up next: Eastcolors who's served up a track that's in grave danger of literally living up to its title. 'Murderer' harbours a bassline so deadly it could bump your dancefloor to death with its endless mutations and manipulations. Sprung with a fine-tuned funk and arranged with dynamite dynamics, this is one murder case all dancefloor detectives want to solve.
*It's down to Paul B to bring this speaker-smashing set to a fitting conclusion. A dab-hand at this D&B game since the turn of the century, 'Drop By Drop' shows just why the Russian artist is widely regarded as 'the producer's producer'. A funky fusion of minimal and electro and classical reference points, it's a roller that just keeps on giving on every listen. Simple but outrageously effective, it's an exemplary lesson in how to make a nagging hook.
*It's time to get with the program!

Girl Unit / Morri$ - Night Slugs Allstars Vol 2 Sampler

The newest installment in our NSWL series sees us borrow two brand new tracks from the forthcoming Night Slugs Allstars Volume 2 compilation, cut to glorious 12" vinyl (with love and care as always by Precise Mastering). Two highly melodic, colourful R&B/Hip Hop instrumentals dripping with Slugs flavour.

On side A, the unstoppable GIRL UNIT expands on his gloopy, warehouse-sized rap beat "Double Take". Teasingly previewed in the outro of "Double Take Part 1" from his "Club Rez" EP earlier this year, now Girl Unit finally lets us have "Part 2" in all its bittersweet glory. The drums and FX of the original are deployed this time over deep analog bass, gorgeous layers of synth melody, DX7 bells and flanged toms borrowed straight from Prince. Few others could pull it off with such charisma.

On the flip, new NS signing, Kansas-based MORRI$ gives us "White Hood". Already sounding super confident, the young producer has cultivated a style that mixes subtle but powerful influences from Southern rap with highly melodic layered instrumentation and organic percussion. "White Hood" is driven by an irresistible accordion hook, framed by skittering hi hats, snare rolls and a massive 808 undercarriage.

Having mixed both sides of this release, NS executive producer BOK BOK takes the opportunity to strip down "White Hood" and pass its bare essentials through some lovely analog gear on the bonus cut, his "Accordian Dub". Listen to that chorus sing!

Command Strange - Rock Steady / Open Your Eyes

Fokuz Recorings boy wonder Command Strange has come a long way since his first release in 2008. Recent featurings with the likes of Artificial Intelligence prove once again his tunes are an excellent addition to every record bag. For the 56st release of Fokuz Recordings he delivers two quality tracks showing he still knows to improve and renew his sound and production.

The A sides 'Rock Steady' is a crafty piece of liquid d&b with all the right musical elements present. Proper rolling drums with some clever fx tweaks and a booming bass make this one a certified club banger.

On the flip 'Open Your Eyes' brings the deepnes, definitely stuff to get down to! The combination of swiping drums, a dynamic but round sounding bassline and floating vocals work really well together, it rounds things off in style perfectly.

Cutworks / Nummix - Joint / What Your Feelings

A: CUTWORKS - 'JOINT'

Imagine entering a dark unfamiliar town where you're greeted with ghostly ambient tones including synthetic grumbling basses, distant ringing chimes, and deep, warm cinematic strings. But this is only a small beginning. After a brief intro featuring some steppy minimal drum patterns and beat progression, Cutworks unleashes a masterpiece drop of pure silk - with a bass-heavy blend of soulful minimal drum & bass, and vocal liquid funk.

'Joint' is one of those tunes that you just simply can't get enough of. Recommended to buy on site.

AA: CUTWORKS & NUMMIX - 'WHAT YOU'RE FEELING'

Cutworks teams up with Nummix to unleash 'What You're Feeling' - a deep thumping vocal liquid banger that is more than worthy of occupying the A-side of this release.

This piece has everything that a classic, soulful drum & bass tune should have, starting with a crispy drum beat accompanied by some vintage keyboard sounds. Upon the main drop 'What You're Feeling' quickly transitions into a rich soundscape featuring a slick but mysterious sounding male vocal, pumping kicks, deep sub-basses, resonant wobbles, jazzy guitar lines, melodic synths, and so much more.

This release is a serious piece of wax. Don't sleep on this one!

Wickaman & Hoodlum - Ain't Done Yet / I Got A Feeling

Frequency Recordings should be well known to every drum & bass fan. Ram Records' sister label, and the home of stars such as Sub Focus, DC Breaks, Xample and Hamilton amongst a plethora of the scene's greatest underground talent, Frequency has played a pivotal role as an outlet for the incredible music that gets sent in via Andy C and Ram's inbox. Following on from Optiv & BTK's 'Zero Hour' Frequency drop their second 12' of the year, this time from Wickaman & Hoodlum and Rewind.
*Taking the lead on the A side Wickaman & Hoodlum unleash an absolute beast of a tune in the form of 'Ain't Done Yet'. Soothing pads lull you into a false sense of security before some chunky drums begin to pave the way for what's to come. And what comes is an immense chunk of bass so heavy it may just knock club goers off their feet! Screeching midrange synths and ultra-low sub bass ensure utter dance floor mayhem and prove once again that Frequency knows how to pick the best of the D&B crop.
*Rewind step up next and their driving slice of drum & bass pulls no punches either. Fans of their recent EP will already know what these producers are capable of, but newcomers will be blown away by the epic atmospheres, muted Reese bass notes and pounding subs. 'I Got A Feeling' is a lesson in how to create feel-good D&B that doesn't sound cheesy.

Youngsta - Destruction/poseidon

Youngsta should need very little introduction by now. One of the figureheads of dubstep since the very beginning, long-running resident at scene-defining club night FWD>> and the DJ who first played some of the genre's most-loved anthems, he continues to be a hugely active figure in dubstep's development. His weekly show on Rinse FM draws deep for new music, helping to expose and break talented new producers, and the founding ethics that defined dubstep in its early years still remain at the heart of his DJ sets.
*It's taken until now - eleven years since FWD>> first opened its doors - for his debut solo 12" to arrive.
*Early support from: Skream / Icicle / Vivek / J:Kenzo / Kryptic Minds / Biome / N-Type / Mary Anne Hobbs

Kevin Mcphee - In Circles

WNCL Recordings and Kevin McPhee have spent many a moon discussing a shared love of Mood II Swing, dubplate culture and Bobby Champs amongst other things. In between times, the Canadian young-gun has been honing 4 tracks to present WNCL012 a finely crafted Extended Play in which McPhee gets his clonk on, in keeping with WNCL's hard jacking groove tendencies McPhee produces four slices of brick hard house that you'll be hard pressed to even try and overlook.Sonic Router
