Thavius Beck - Cosmic Noise (TAPE)
21UTRQDM15
U-Trax
Cassette27.12.202127.DEC.21

Hip-HopHip-HopInstrumentalBeatsAmbientExperimental

Since our first contact with NYC based producer Thavius Beck in 2018, he sent us over 100 unreleased tracks, or beats, as he calls them. 25 of them have been selected for releases on U-TRAX, good for over 2 hours of music, across this album and the Lovesick EP.

Growing up in LA, Thavius Beck entered the hip-hop scene as member of Global Phlowtations, and released several solo albums under the Adlib moniker. In later years, he released five albums under his own name on labels like Mush, Big Dada and Plug Research, and also produced albums for artists like Saul Williams and K‑the‑I???, and did some remixing for amongst others Nine Inch Nails.
Nowadays he combines making music with a career as a succesful certified Ableton and Bitwig trainer and as a music teacher at Berklee NYC.

The tracks vary in style a lot, but what they have in common is that they either are moody – in U-TRAX lingo: deep - or they are drum heavy. The common denominator would probably be 'experimental/instrumental hip-hop', reminiscent of producers like Flying Lotus. People have tried all sorts of comparisons to pinpoint Thavius' sound, ranging from 'between DJ Shadow and Orbital' and 'a mix of Massive Attack and The Orb'. None of these are spot on, yet quite a few of these tracks feel like a happy marriage between hip-hop beats and techno sounds.

Despite the fact that some tracks are 20 years old and have been made with widely different gear (one track was even made on a PlayStation 2), this selection sounds remarkably balanced, yet diverse.

From the irresistible single 'Lovesick/Still Sick' to the dark and massive 'Birdsong' (that echoes the sound of his popular song 'Atmos'), and from the head-nodding 'Work!' to the soothing 'Reunited With The All' - if this collection showcases anything, it's Thavius' brilliant production and composing skills, as well as his wizard-level sampling techniques. The result is a luscious electronic music album with a broad appeal.

Available on double sided, 80-minute, 20-track cassette (two exclusive bonus tracks), comes in Maltese cross cardboard picture sleeve.

Underdog Records
12inch04.11.202104.NOV.21

Hip-HopSoul

Dark and yet still luminous, the new album of The Buttshakers, Arcadia remains true to
the spirit of soul : hope out of struggle, light out of fear; even when the cracks expose the
darkest side of humanity, soul music has always given us the assurance that out of this
chaos, a better day will come. A philosophy on which they built their discography and their
stage presence; founding principles that the group has always been faithful to: to awaken
the listener, to ignite the fire, to bring the dance.

We now have a superb new remix which has a very different feel to the original version thanks to Mac McRaw’s expertise in using his weapon of choice, the Emu SP1200 famed for that authentic much prized 12-bit grit. Plus, the original LP version now available on the recurringly popular 7” format.

Fellow Vinyl Veteran and regular AE designer Mr Krum has beautifully recreated the feel of early 90’s Electra Records sleeve artwork as to a nod to Grand Puba’s debut solo recordings, having already been a member of 2 sterling Hip Hop groups – Brand Nubian and prior to that Masters Of Ceremony.

Boora is known for his rare, but very high quality output. This is also evident on "Nautiqua", his new album with lofi legend Wun Two. The two producers take you with them to the sea and undiscovered land, where they explore different sounds from around the world. With South American influences, the album perfectly reflects the harmony of the two artists and is a successful mix of danceable rhythms and dusty relaxed lofi sounds. A real masterpiece from two of the best artists of their genre!

Hip-HopHip-Hop

LTD. RED VINYL

Dies Occidendum is a mythical voyage across fog-laden, scorched earth terrain from the original friar of dark hip hop, Dj Muggs the Black Goat. Known and revered as the sonic mastermind behind both Cypress Hill and his own Soul Assassins imprint, here Muggs sheds the MCs and presents his latest dark-soaked productions as an illuminated manuscript of sorts; a fully immersive, instrumental soundtrack to the mysterious Dies Occidendum. No one wields the Excalibur of sonic darkness quite like Muggs. Combining ingredients of psych rock, gypsy folk with modern elements of trap, forged together under layers of his signature sonic grime, Muggs has created yet another blueprint for the utmost sonic menace and macabre. The Renaissance is upon us. Long live King Muggs. ABOUT DJ MUGGS: One of the original architects of dark hip hop in the early '90s, DJ Muggs helped craft a singular sound that blended darker sensibilities of psychedelic rock and hip hop in a unique way that influenced many in its wake. As the primary producer of legendary rap group Cypress Hill, Muggs' productions and sonic sensibilities are unmistakable and deeply revered by the truest of hejkvgads. Muggs' own MC round-robin imprint, Soul Assassins has been home to countless productions, laying sonic drop cloths for everyone from Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Chuck D, GZA, Mobb Deep to MF Doom, Freddie Gibbs, Roc Marciano and Mach-Hommy.

EL MICHELS AFFAIR - MURKIT GEM
BCR107
Big Crown Records
7"-Vinyl29.03.202129.MAR.21

Hip-HopFunk

El Michels Affair is back with another two-sider picture sleeve 7". The A side, Murkit Gem, taken from the upcoming album, Yeti Season, is another pairing of El Michels Affair's unpredictable brand of soul and the lilting vocals of Piya Malik. From the crack of the first snare this one sinks its teeth in you. The backing music simultaneously has the swag of the darker side of Wu Tang as well as the light hearted bounce of a cartoon theme song. Piya Malik's vocals dance all over the tune, cementing Murkit Gem as an unlikely but undeniable "get to the dancefloor now" record. The B side Cham Cham is a non album cut exclusive to this 45. Again EMA invites Piya Malik to the microphone and she shares her styled storytelling vocals. It is the vocal version of Perfect Harmony, which appears on Yeti season sans vocals Picture sleeve art by the legendary Ghanaian artist, Mr Brew. Courtesy of Deadly Prey Gallery, Chicago, IL.

Emapea - Same Old Same Old / Drop The Bass

BLACK DAY IN JULY PRODUCTIONS
7"-Vinyl17.12.202117.DEC.21

Hip-HopReggae

Polish beats-wizard Emapea returns to Cold Busted for a quick double-shot of crucial dub and phat riddims. Released on 7-inch vinyl, Emapea’s new single celebrates the return of the good life with choice sounds for ‘zoning out’ in the global dancehall. “Same Old Same Old” occupies the A-side with a potent downtempo skank and an infectious sing-song vocal. The vibe is introspective and heady, as echoed percussion swirls through the soundsystem speakers. Flip the wax for “Drop the Bass,” a deeper dancefloor cut with a prominent boom-bap beat and bouncy bass line. Maximum dub pressure is exerted, with splashes of delay effects and rhythmic flourishes as an emcee gives “direction to the entire planet.” In the hands of a top selector, Emapea’s new tracks are ready to move the soul.

NOW AGAIN
7"-Vinyl17.12.202117.DEC.21

Hip-HopFunkSoul

For her second release on Now-Again, Eastside LA soul stirrer Trish Toledo stretches out, with help from Los Yesterdays and Tommy Brenneck (Budos Band/Menahan Street Band). “Sin Control” is a song as redolent of late 1960s Italian Library experimentation (think Morricone / Alessandroni / Nicolai, et al.) as the Latino soul of the great Los Angeles Negros. Recorded at Hollywood’s Sound Factory and produced by Brenneck and Los Yesterdays’ Gabe Rowland, Trish sings in Spanish, delving into the timeless themes of lost love and endless longing. The b-side’s instrumental features the greatest whistler recording today, Molly Lewis. You really couldn’t imagine a better combination, and it’s as predictably great as a pancho-wearing stranger taking down all of the baddies in a border town and riding off towards a dusty sunset

Arrington de Dionyso - Orga Ar
IMP034
Improved Sequence
12inch17.12.202117.DEC.21

Hip-HopAvantgardeBeatsExperimental

Originally released on cassette in 1994 and now for the first time on vinyl, this is an incredible document from a teenage Arrington de Dionyso. All the seeds of his 30+ career are engrained on these fully formed Tascam recordings. From Arrington: "Orga Ar is how Old Time Relijun came into being. It was the first time I ever had a "real" drummer (Bryce Panic) come in to give me some tracks to build songs with, and then I had Aaron come in and play upright bass on one tune (Qiyamat). When they heard the tape they both asked me if I had ever thought about starting a band and getting some shows organized. It's so weird to imagine now, because I really didn't have my shit together to do the kind of live performance I wanted to do all by myself. So the idea was that we would start with the songs on the tape but allow them to "breathe" in the live setting. I think at first I really wanted the band to be mostly improvisational, and just using the lyrics as a way to have continuity. But after a lot of trial and error in setting up our own shows we decided that having a more structured setlist had better results in getting people to dance. The Olympia scene at that time was kind of "anti-dance party"- most of the punk shows downtown were heavily politicized and were more about the connected activism than about the music per se. For me at the time, I felt like the REAL "political statement" that needed to be made was for the music to be an affirmation of one's physicality, that movement and enthusiasm were both OK and sometimes necessary for self-and-social liberation. We weren't popular at all in the "scene" until years later, in fact all of our US tours were disastrous until we were invited to tour in Europe by an Italian fan who organized everything in 12 different countries. In pre-internet era Olympia, our only aims were playing fun shows for our friends, with little regard for reaching the outside world."

Wendell Harrison - Dreams Of A Love Supreme
WHR015
Tribe Records
12inch18.02.202218.FEB.22

Hip-HopSoulPopJazz

Re-mastering by: Cicely Baston at Alchemy/Air Mastering, London

Wendell Harrison was born in Detroit in 1942 where he began formal jazz studies for piano, clarinet and tenor saxophone. At 14, while still in high school, Harrison started performing & recording professionally with artists such as Marvin Gaye, Grant Green, Sun Ra, Hank Crawford … and many others.

In 1971, Harrison began teaching music at Metro Arts (a multi-arts complex for youth) where he also connected with Marcus Belgrave, Harold McKinney and Phil Ranelin…soon after they formed the (now legendary) Afro-centric TRIBE record label and artist collective. TRIBE used the Metro Arts complex as a vehicle to convey a growing black political consciousness. Wendell Harrison also published the very popular TRIBE magazine, a publication dedicated to local and national social and political issues, as well as featuring artistic contributions such as poetry and visual pieces.

In 1978 Harrison and McKinney co-founded REBIRTH, a non-profit jazz performance and education organization, in which many notable jazz artists have participated. Around the same time Wendell Harrison also created the WENHA record label and publishing company, which released many of his (now classic) recordings as well as those of other artists, such as Phil Ranelin, Doug Hammond and Reggie Fields (The Real ShooBeeDoo).

In the early 1990s, Wendell Harrison was awarded the title of “Jazz Master” by Arts Midwest. This distinction led Harrison to collaborate with fellow honorees and gave him the chance to tour throughout the United States, Middle East and Africa. Even to this day Wendell Harrison’s recordings for the TRIBE, WENHA and REBIRTH labels have a large worldwide fanbase.

DREAMS OF A LOVE SUPREME is a monster album that features an all-star line-up that includes Phil Ranelin on trombone, Harold McKinney on Keyboards and Roy Brooks on percussion. Although you can hear the 80ies creeping in with a smoother sound, more synths, and disco/R&B vocals… this remains a very spiritual (and soulful) jazz record. The record’s an irresistible blend of soul jazz combined with funky electric instrumentation…a groovy sound which is very much of its time, yet overtly timeless and as relevant today as it was back when it was initially released. Big Crown Records is proud to present this rock solid two-sider from El Michels Affair. This 7" is part of a new Big Crown X El Oms collaboration that includes a custom deck of playing cards and a t shirt series illustrated by El Oms. The labels of this 45 are pulled from some of the King & Queen illustrations contained in the deck. To go with this project, El Michels teamed up again with Bobby Oroza for the A side tune which plays along with the collab theme called "Stack The Deck". These two proved their chemistry on 2020's "Reasons" which became a fast favorite around the globe. This time El Michels comes with a heavier more orchestrated track that Bobby finds the perfect groove on as he plays up the gamble of love. The B side is a speaker smashing cover of the late, great, Notorious B.I.G.'s "Things Done Changed" from his Ready To Die album. El Michels Affair stays close to the tone of the original Easy Mo Bee production but makes it their own with their signature horns and cinematic grit. 45 and playing cards are being sold separately.

Madlib Invazion reissues Madlib’s collaboration with legendary Brazilian drummer Ivan “Mamao” Conti, propellant for lauded jazz fusion archetypes Azymuth. 5000 pressed for worldwide. Debuts on Black Friday. First released in 2008 on CD by the US based Mochilla imprint with vinyl being issued only in Europe on the Kindered Sprits label. Both formats are out of print with vinyl unavailble since its initial run. Alternate cover artwork, photography by B+. When Madlib went to Brazil in 2002 with Mochilla to participate in the production of Brasilintime his one mission was to meet Ivan “Mamao” Conti the drummer of the legendary trio Azymuth. Madlib had made an Azymuth tribute record he wanted to play for him. On a rainy night in Rio Mamao and Madlib went in the studio. Several hours later the rhythm tracks that make up Sujinho were laid and the process began. Featuring the music of Madlib, Mamao, Edu Lobo, Chico Buarque de Hollanda, Luiz Eca, Baden Powell, Vinicius De Moraes, Marcos Valle, Joao Donato, Dom Um Romao, Airto Moreira and even George Duke… and with guest vocals by Thalma De Freitas — Jackson Conti is a unique and classic record. Filled with the angularity and edge of a Madlib production and underwritten by the polyrhythmics of Mamao — Sujinho takes Brazilian music into places it has never been, bringing oft forgotten classics like Upa Neguinho to 21st century ears.

It is the type of music that shares a genesis with the birth of soul and R&B sounds emitted from the classic lowrider cruising down Whittier Boulevard to the sunshine-y vibes of traditional ska and dancehall reggae. And with his debut 45 on Colemine, Quinones shows that he's adept at not just the slow and low, but also the mellow sounds of early reggae. Brownswood Recordings

Hip-HopR & BFunkSoulPopJazzDisco

Handpicked by Gilles Peterson from Manchester’s vibrant live music scene, and newly signed to Brownswood, 2021 set to be the main stage for them to breeze on to the scene, as a multi-generational band breathing new life into the classic British street-soul sound, founded by singer/song-writer Kemani Anderson, multi-instrumentalist and song-writer Callum Connell and Manchester music scene stalwart Stuart Whitehead.

Debut track ‘The Sun’ was inspired by a poem written by Callum Connell at the top of Greenwich Park viewpoint looking over the infamous London cityscape as the sun set. At the time the band were writing and arranging separately with Callum & Kemani living in South London while they attended Trinity Laban (following in the footsteps of many of the UK’s young Jazz prodigies). Eventually, they congregated for a fateful recording session at Blueprint studios in Manchester, that would be the amalgamation of their individual processes, to create ‘The Sun’. Inspired by four bass chords flowing like a stream of consciousness, Callum’s poem sprung

to life as the centrepiece of the track, with the melody being polished and refined by Kemani on keys and vocals. The result is an invigorating debut produced by influential music producer and sound engineer Yvonne Ellis (Simply Red & Swing Out Sister). Kemani coins this sound as “spiritual and healing” whilst Callum shares “The Sun’ is a powerful and uplifting song that can take you on a

spiritual journey but also make you reflect on everyday life.”

Surprise Chef / Minoru Mraoka - The Positive And The Negative
MRB7202B
Mr Bongo
7"-Vinyl17.01.202217.JAN.22

Hip-HopFunk

This release is a special one; a moment where the two halves of the Mr Bongo record label unite, our heritage re-issues and our contemporary artists roster.

Minoru Muraoka’s 'The Positive and the Negative’ is a firm favourite at Mr Bongo. It sees a master of the shakuhachi, a traditional bamboo Japanese flute, flex his prodigious skill resulting in a unique mix of breakbeat jazz and Japanese folkloric music. 'The Positive and the Negative’ featured on the 1970 'Bamboo’ album, which Mr Bongo reissued in 2019. Heralded by DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, Egon, and many others. The record’s cult status had us thinking how could we pay further homage to a sublime track such as this. The opportunity came to us in an email from Melbourne’s Surprise Chef with a link to the fabulous reinterpretation of the track which they had just recorded.

"Minoru Muraoka’s ‘Bamboo’ LP has long been a fixture in our record bags, mostly for the killer shakuhachi funk cut The Positive and The Negative. The record is possibly our favourite from Mr Bongo’s extensive catalogue of reissues, and certainly the most influential to Surprise Chef; The Positive and the Negative’s cinematic atmosphere paired with the wonky drum feels and dramatic performance makes it a near-perfect amalgamation of what we try to capture on Surprise Chef records. We’ve borrowed an element or two from the tune over the last few albums (such as the percussion on ‘The Limp’), so it felt right to go head first into reinterpreting the entire track for ourselves. We recorded the tune in Karate Boogaloo’s attic studio with our man Henry Jenkins at the controls and Hudson Whitlock on percussion. We spent an entire day trying to get the take; we felt such a deep responsibility to capture the intensity of the original, we must have done 20 or 30 takes before we were finally happy. We stuck a fork in it late into the night, satisfied that we’d had our best crack at paying homage to a masterpiece by the great Minoru Muraoka.” - Surprise Chef

Forged in their signature sound, "The Chef" have made 'The Positive and the Negative' their own whilst simultaneously treating the original with utmost respect. The shakuhachi and koto have been replaced by synths and guitars, but the breakbeat psychedelic vein flows richly through both instruments

The 7" vinyl format was the right fit for this release, so the original Minoru Muraoka recording which clocks in over nine minutes has been edited into a 7” version to accompany Surprise Chef’s new take.

FRANK HATCHETT - SENSATIONAL
TER084
Telephone Explosion
12inch26.11.202126.NOV.21

Hip-HopFunkSoul

Sensational – that’s Frank Hatchett! These words can be found on many of the 16 albums credited to the legendary NYC jazz dancer, choreographer, and teacher to the stars - Madonna, Brooke Shields, Olivia Newton-John, and Naomi Cambell.

In the highlights compiled on this expansive double LP set, the sounds of Hatchett’s albums run the gamut from disco and funk in the 1970s to electro and proto-techno as they glide through the ’80s. Most tracks clock in at a brisk 2:30 – the ideal length for Hatchett’s classes or his students’ recital performances. Fans of library music will find a similar focus on immaculate performances, while the tightly coiled drum breaks, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and thumping 808s will send rare groove collectors into a state of head nodding bliss.

Hatchett’s name and photos may appear on the sleeves of his records like Dance Crazy, Jazz Power, or Vop Style, but he is nowhere to be found in the music contained within. Instead, these albums dating back to 1974 were recorded by studio players under the guidance of musical director Don Tipton or arranger Zane Mark. Performers include: keyboardist Fred McFarlane (Madonna, Keith Sweat, Evelyn “Champagne” King), drummer Bernard Davis (Steve Winwood, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kool & The Gang).

Between 1982 and 1988, Irene Mawela - a key contributor to the sound of such famous names as the Dark City Sisters, the Sweet Sixteens and the Mahotella Queens - made more than two dozen excellent vocal jive recordings for the SABC Transcription Service. Though broadcast regularly over the years on Phalaphala FM, no transcriptions were ever made commercially available. Now, Umsakazo Records and the SABC are proud to present 22 of Irene's best transcriptions, providing a rare insight into the SABC’s vast archive of recorded material... and a glimpse into a forgotten era of the illustrious career of one of South Africa’s greatest singers.

Makgona Tsohle Band - Take Your Time / Marabi Blues

Hip-HopFunkSoulPopJazzWorld MusicFolkCountry

• Fully licensed and restored from the original master in the Gallo Record Company vault.
• Featuring Teaspoon Ndelu, West Nkosi and Michael Xaba on saxophones and Marks Mankwane on lead guitar.
• Includes new liner notes and full recording personnel on sleeve rear.
• Strictly limited run of 500 copies!

'Umsakazo Records is proud to present the first in a series of limited-edition replica 45rpm records. This collection of ‘seven singles’ has been carefully curated from key holy-grail recordings made during the golden age of South African township jive. It is fitting that the first in this series comes from the band so closely identified with the genesis of the style – the Makgona Tsohle Band, the hardest working session team in apartheid-era South Africa.

Under the guidance of talent scout and producer Rupert Bopape, the Makgona Tsohle Band (“The Band That Can Do Anything”) would underpin literally hundreds of recording sessions as the house band of Gallo Africa’s Mavuthela Music subsidiary from its launch in 1964 right through to 1977. This included all of the hit records made by Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens, as well as classic hits from the Mthunzini Girls, Irene Mawela, Abafana Baseqhudeni, Lemmy ‘Special’ Mabaso, Reggie Msomi, Sipho Bhengu, Teaspoon Ndelu and so many more artists essential to the sound of urban jive music.

The Mavuthela operation formed the core of Gallo’s ‘black music’ production and, by the mid-1970s, accounted for as much as 20% of the organisation’s total income. Mavuthela’s market dominance was usually attributed to the resourcefulness of director Bopape, along with the well-oiled machine that was Gallo Africa. True enough, Mavuthela releases were of a high musical and technical quality and were always well publicised, be it through Gallo’s promotions department or the countless stage performances made by Mavuthela artists in South Africa and neighbouring countries.

But the Makgona Tsohle Band was the real secret to Mavuthela’s success. Its repertoire stretched from traditional sax and accordion jive right through to disco and ‘English pop’, and this 45rpm sees them effortlessly tackling the burgeoning 1970s Soweto soul-jazz sound. Ironically, the musical influence behind this recording was almost certainly Michael Xaba, the seasoned African jazz veteran who had scornfully referred to the newer strains of jive in the late 1950s as ‘mbaqanga’. As the Makgona Tsohle began making history as the country’s first all-electric ensemble, that epithet would resurface and was eventually ‘reclaimed’ as a term of endearment for the music they had largely created. By the 1970s, Xaba and a number of other longstanding jazzmen found themselves employed by Mavuthela as musical directors, under the initiative of Bopape who was not particularly musically inclined himself. The Makgona Tsohle Band members consequently gained a rich musical education and were fully equipped to move into arranging and producing roles when Bopape retired in 1977.

Issued only once on a 45rpm single in 1972 - and restored from the original master in Gallo’s Johannesburg tape vault - “Take Your Time” and “Marabi Blues” both offer new insight into the diverse catalogue of this greatest of all mbaqanga bands.'

Hip-HopHip-HopRapPopJazz

Acclaimed L.A. rapper Blu has left an indelible mark on the hip-hop landscape, crafting an impressive catalog instilled with the essence of the vibrant city he calls home. Now, the gifted lyricist is back with the new album "The Color Blu(e)". Among Blu’s most conceptual projects to date, "The Color Blu(e)" is an artistic thesis statement, celebrating and reflecting on a remarkable creative journey. The word “Blue” is featured in every song title, and “Blue” is also weaved into each of the album’s soundscapes. “This album is the ultimate cartoon series about myself,” Blu explains. “The Color Blu(e) is the cool breeze. Another day in the life of being Blu.” While he typically works with a single producer on each project, Blu recruited Sirplus, J57, and longtime collaborator Exile to shape the album’s sonic texture. An unapologetically personal collection with no features, "The Color Blu(e)" is packed with intricate wordplay and dynamic production, reaffirming the unique talent of the artist known as Blu

For Fans Of.. Durand Jones & The Indications, Frightnrs, Thee Sinseers, Jr. Thomas & The Volcanos, Bobby Orozo. Producer, songwriter, and member of Thee Sinseers. Upcoming LP on Colemine Records. Joey embodies the East LA sweet soul scene, and it now dipping into reggae! As the leader of the modern Chicano soul outfit, Thee Sinseers, and releasing a string of singles as a solo artist, Joey Quinones and his crew have recently been ushering in a new era of modern soul. We are proud to present "For You" by the ever-sweet and oh-so-talented Mr. Joey Quinones.
