94 East Feat. Prince - Just Another Sucker
CHARLYL220
CHARLY
12inch30.09.201630.SEP.16

Hip-HopFunkSoul

THE EARLY WORK OF A MUSICAL GENIUS WHICH BECAME A STAPLE OF THE MINNEAPOLIS SOUND FOR DECADES TO COME.
Formed in December 1975 by Pepe Willie (the former husband of Prince's cousin), 94 East was the Minneapolis-based funk group with which Prince first came to prominence. Willie was a key player in launching Prince's career, spotting his many talents and quickly enlisting the young maestro into 94 East (named after Interstate 94 in Minneapolis). Alongside Willie, Prince composed one song for them, "Just Another Sucker", newly remastered for this release along with "One Man Jam".

These are two of a collection of epic tracks laid down by the band between December 1975 and February 1979, with Prince's nascent musical power to the fore. Remastered versions of the complete recordings are available across three new Charly releases: CD (CHARLYF840), single LP (CHARLYL219 - purple vinyl ) and triple LP box (CHARLYL221) with bonus tracks and instrumental versions.

The band disbanded in 1979 when Prince became a star in his own right . And the rest is history. . .

AL SUNNY - PLANETS

Favorite
12inch17.12.201917.DEC.19

Hip-HopSoulPopWorld Music

Two years after an acclaimed first album, Al Sunny and Favorite Recordings proudly present Planets, carrying on their collaboration and bringing it to another level.

Al Sunny is a young and talented singer/musician/composer emerging from the French soul music scene. During his conservatory studies, he refined his knowledge and confirmed his desire to write and compose. He quickly matured the music that he truly loves, inspired by artists such as Tim Maia, America, Al Green, and Al Jarreau. Giving birth to the majority of his compositions through his guitar, he always seeks to bring his songs’ melody to the forefront. During his studies he kept experiencing live performing on different scenes and confirmed his choice for a musical career, while also meeting many brilliant musicians, including Florian Pellissier, who later introduced him to Pascal Rioux and Favorite Recordings.

It resulted in 2017 in Time to Decide release, a dazzling first album establishing Al Sunny’s music and writing style, looking towards the 70s and 80s Westcoast movement, infused with Blue-Eyed-Soul, Pop and Folk flavors. Built on the same influences, Planets is made of 8 new compositions (including a CD and digital bonus), and is clearly a continuation of its cadet, asserting Al Sunny’s talent and singing skills.

Fully recorded live and analogic in Paris, this new album also stands out by an impressive level of production, faithful to some classics of the genre. Mixing catchy melodies, soulful vocals, warm and heavy bass, strong beat and beautiful guitars and keyboards harmonies, Planets just perfectly meets the AOR and Modern-Soul golden era standards.

Fredfades & Sun Raw - The Maxi Single/mobbin For A Hobby

King Underground
7"-Vinyl06.07.201806.JUL.18

Hip-HopHip-Hop

* 7" vinyl
* 300 copies
* Featuring Planet Asia (Cali Agents)

2 songs on a limited edition 45 - 300 copies, all straight SP1200. Both songs featuring Planet Asia with one of the tracks featuring one of PA's friends Waz on the hook.

Fredfades & Sun Raw are keeping alive the gritty, analogue sound with 12-bit drums and loops but with their own unique style. Fred has been working with KingUnderground for the last 3 years and has a flock of releases. Sun Raw from Stockholm, Sweden is new to the crew but about to drop his debut "Beat Weeks". The duo are both part of Mutual Intentions crew and find inspiration from old music, from Jazz, funk, soul, rock and anything they find in the crates.

Planet Asia has been affiliated with KU from early on with a release and some features. Some MC's have been left behind, Asia isn't one of those. He's been kicking out better and better verses since he first showed up on the scene in the early 90's and it doesn't look like he's stopping anytime soon.

Spinefarm Records
12inch22.05.202022.MAY.20

Hip-HopHip-HopPopAlternative

Following the release of Puppy's critically acclaimed debut album, The Goat, the band decided to record in Hackney's (largely analogue) Holy Mountain Studios, around the corner from the rehearsal space where they first started making music together, to create their third EP "iii".

Musicians Jock, Will & Billy instead approached iii as a stand-alone six-tracker (plus two interludes), tackling material conceived for purpose - songs that waste no time in getting to the point, recorded quickly and essentially live to capture chemistry, spirit plus a more frayed and brutal set of sonics.

Released on single sleeve trans green LP.

Splinta - The Splinta Experience
RXTXV009
RX:TX
7"-Vinyl10.07.201810.JUL.18

Hip-HopInstrumentalBeatsExperimental

The Splinta Experience was made entirely by hand. And a foot. The record is the result of Splinta's turntable tricks and layering. It's simply drumming and scratching arranged on the fly with a loop pedal, with added effects from a basic, pocket-size bass module. Low in fidelity and high in humming, buzzing and hissing. No SP-404 effects needed.

This is scratch music that takes us to the Electric ScratchHappyLand. It might as well be a tribute record celebrating 50 years of Jimmy Hendrix Experience's last album. And 22 years of Kid Koala's greatest mix-tape of all time.

Splinta's a Slovenian. He's been deejaying & juggling for more than a while. This is his debut on plastic.

Sleeve illustration, design and print all also hand-made by Splinta. Really wholesome hiphop shit.

The Mandatory Eight - Soul Fanfare #3
ATA014
ATA Records
7"-Vinyl30.04.201930.APR.19

Hip-HopR & BFunkSoul

The Mandatory Eight first appeared on the compilation "Funk, Soul & Afro Rarities: An Intro To ATA Records" released in 2015 on Here & Now recordings with the song "Suckerpunch", which has since become the label's most requested song for re-release as a 45. ATA have dug deep in the archives to unearth two dance-tempo 45 killers to placate the calls until studio time is allotted to the band for a debut album.

The band's sound and ideology definitely lies in less refined eclectic soul. Feel over precision, passion over execution, soul-on-a-budget grooves.

From the opening drum pick up of "Soul Fanfare #3" it is clear that The Mandatory 8 are here to make you move. With proud horn lines reminiscent of something that you might find in the Stax vaults, Soul Fanfare definitely takes it's lead from backing bands such as the Barkays and the funkier side of Booker T and the MGs. One can imagine that this was definitely a set opener for the group, guaranteed to put foot to floor. Guitar and bass have a care free movement and feel, conjuring up tones of late 60's summer soul hits.

The B-side "Turn It Out" has a darker, moodier feel to the previous side. Still a dance floor filling groove, the band take a direction more similar to below the radar funk outfits such as Amnesty or LA carnival. Biting minor horn lines set the tone backed by a bubbling bed of congas, rhythm guitar, unruly bass and drums which don't dip below boiling for the duration. "Turn It Out" features a manzarek-esque farfisa organ solo which sets the sonic tone of a band without funds but with plenty of soul in the bank.

Both sides will reflect well for different moods on the same dance floor.

Various - Gay Jamaica Independence Time

12inch06.03.202006.MAR.20

Hip-HopReggaePopRock'n'roll

Having dominated the rock steady era, Arthur ‘Duke’ Reid was searching for a way to build upon his standing as one of Jamaica’s premiere record producers following the arrival of the new reggae sound towards the close of the Sixties. By releasing Gay Jamaica Independence Time he proved that he still released high quality tracks. Some of the most talented musicians from that period are featured on this record, like U-Roy, The Ethiopians, Alton Ellis and Tommy McCook. Duke Reid may have been late on the reggae scene but his best material stands shoulder to shoulder with the classics of the era and many of the tracks presented here reach that level with ease. The disc closes with the Jamaican National Anthem, as this title was released to commemorate the eighth anniversary of Jamaican independence.

Gay Jamaica Independence Time is available as a limited edition of 750 individually numbered copies on orange vinyl.

Del The Funky Homosapien - No Need For Alarm
TEG755061LP
Traffic Ent. Group
12inch17.04.202017.APR.20

Hip-HopHip-Hop

Repressed and back in soon. After breaking out of the Bay Area underground scene in the early 90s Del The Funky Homosapien made a radical turn with his sophomore release, 93’s "No Need For Alarm.” Casting aside the familiar G-funk vibe of his debut, perhaps as “No Need” was produced without the involvement of his cousin Ice Cube, he moved into a jazzier – some would say more East Coast direction on this project. The verbal content on “No Need” shifted as well, moving away from comic interludes and towards a focus on battle raps. “No Need For Alarm” was produced with his Oakland based Hieroglyphics Crew with Domino, A-Plus and Casual all contributing beats making the record one of the three “Hiero Golden Age” releases (along with Souls of Mischief’s “’93 til Infinity” and Casual’s “Fear Itself”). Though some critics are harsh on “No Need For Alarm” and claim it's not as strong an effort as Del’s debut, many disagree and see this release as being the first where Del really stood out. Regardless of which side of the fence one falls on that topic, it's without doubt that "No Need For Alarm" has stood the test of time and remains a challenging and uncompromising follow up from one of the most talented and eccentrically gifted artists to to ever emerge from the world of west coast hip hop.

Hip-HopHip-Hop

The man with the golden sound is back to showcase some rare material from his personal archives for the first time with this beautifully packaged and limited-edition 45 box set. The set of 5
seven-inches features unheard original versions, instrumentals, and unreleased songs from a classic period of output between 2002-2006, including beats from the sessions of his critically acclaimed “It’s
All Happening Now” LP and the “Put a Beat to a Rhyme” remix project. All this is available for the first time. After a long stay in Queens, NY, soaking up the energy and grittiness of the city and working with Joey Bada$$, the London-born musician is back in the UK. After several successful previous releases with KingUnderground Records, Lewis is now releasing a special treat for long-time fans.
In a standout cut, dramatic horns and raw, soulful vocals form the foundation of the instrumental version of legendary Wu-Tang member, Ghostface’s “Shaky Dog.” The original track is on the “Fish Scale” album, released on Def Jam in 2006. “Sunny Dedications” featured in instrumental form for the first time ever; is a classic beat taken from
Parker’s seminal “It’s All Happening Now” album released in 2002 on Massive Attack’s Virgin imprint, Melankolic. The lush strings and hard drums still strike a chord over 15 years later. As Parker continues to maintain his musical integrity and commitment to the traditional Hip-Hop aesthetic while simultaneously pushing his sound forward,KingUnderground brings a rare snapshot of the veteran producer’s cutting-room floor.

PAT KALLA & LE SUPER MOJO - CANETTE EP

Heavenly Sweetness
12inch25.03.202025.MAR.20

Hip-HopAfrobeat

Tucked away in their cover, but never for long, Guts' musical eyebrow wands have once again panicked, this time aggressively marking Africa.

Letting his instrument guide him towards the one he felt was the next signature of his label Pura Vida Sounds, the beatmaker-producer found himself face to face with an old acquaintance: Pat Kalla aka the voice of the Voilaaa Sound System, aka the one with which he crossed the funk on his album Philantropiques and the title "Daddy Sweet".

Convinced to follow him in studio, Pat, accompanied by his Super Mojo celebrates this collaboration by decapsulating La "Canette". Long groove in the mouth, acidic notes of synths and attacks of precise guitars, despite the bitterness of his words, a drink that suits every hour of the day and that strengthens the legs most numb. Heckled by her journey to the bottom of Pat’s musical bag, shaken by the syncopes of the beat, she spreads her funk foam from the very beginning into the A-side furrow.

Bartering the beige trench coat of Commissioner Joss against a colorful toghu, Kalla and his Mojo revisit on the B side the "Requiem Pour Un Con" de Gainsbourg. The martial groove, dark and hypnotic leaves its place to a polyrhythmic afrodisco production, surrounded by a low velocity.
More than a recovery, they are making a real diversion.
A hijacking driven by Pat Kalla and his Super Mojo, with Serge Gainsbourg and Jean Gabin sitting in the back seat like two "Pachas".

Irish producer, DJ and radio host Mr. Spring aka Replicants, joins the German Dominance Electricity sub label Electro Empire.

The versed multi-genre music writer, who has been active since the early 90's under various aliases, starts this purely hardware production based package with the powerful "I Like The Way You Crunch". This original version of the earlier released "I like The Way You Focus", offers energetic broken 808 beats, punchy basslines, a mighty string machine break and sinisterly mumbled vocoder magic.

Second song "Jiro", a tribute to legendary sushi chef Jiro Ono, is a classic old school Electrofunk Breakdance anthem. Next to the featured Extended Mix, 5-times DMC mix champion DJ Mek contributes a remix with an extra portion of fresh scratches and funky edits.

Essential for fans of clubby Electro with a traditional twist, as known from artists like DJ Overdose, Egyptian Lover or Dynamik Bass System.

Aktiv seit den frühen 90ern unter diversen Namen, started der versierte Multi-Genre-Musiker dieses komplett mit analoger Hardware produzierte Release mit dem energiegeladenen "I Like The Way You Crunch". Diese Originalversion des zuvor veröffentlichen "I Like The Way You Focus" (aus Dave Clarke's best of 2018 chart) punktet mit punchigen 808 Beats und Basslines, magischen Synth-Strings und gekonnt gemurmelten Vocoder-Vocals.

Curtis Mayfield - Back To The World
ETH8015LP
8th Records
12inch08.02.201808.FEB.18

Hip-HopFunkSoulPopJazz

It was 1970 when Curtis Mayfield left R&B group The Impressions, to set off on his own solo path. What followed was a rich and highly celebrated career, during which Mayfield produced some of the most influential R&B, soul, funk, and gospel recordings of all time. Along with Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, Mayfield is credited with helping to ring in a new era of socially-aware funk and soul music, all while raking in numerous Billboard-charting hits both as a performer and a songwriter. Though he died in 1999, he left behind a vast legacy of innovation and long-lasting music, and has been ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 100 Greatest Artists of all-time. Coming hot on the heels of his powerhouse hit soundtrack for the film Superfly was 1973's Back To The World. Mayfield's music always had a socially-conscious and political bent to it, but the tracks on Back To The World cranked this conceit up to an even higher degree, largely inspired the increasingly industrial world around him, and the social and environmental concerns that followed it. (The album's lead single "Future Shock" was named for an Alvin Toffler book on the subject.) Though not the smash commercial success of his previous efforts, Back To The World still landed in the Billboard Top 20, and is considered an underrated, and overlooked entry in the soul innovator's catalog.

Pedro & Jenna Camille - This Is What I'm Going Through EP
WOLFEP046
WOLF MUSIC
12inch19.07.201819.JUL.18

HouseJazzyHip-HopR & BSoul

It's a captivating encounter when a producer of relative anonymity bursts onto the scene with an exciting and engaging release, that you're drawn back to again and again, wondering how you've never heard of them before. Porto producer Pedro, & Washington DC vocalist Jenna Camille have achieved exactly that with this first release on the mighty Wolf Music Recordings.

The influences from jazz though to soul, RnB & broken beat are weaved deep within this record. You're drawn in from the off with an intro of stripped back pianos behind an emotional spoken word monologue from Jenna, before it opens up into a beatsy, RnB infused groove.

Having pulled you in 'Float' hits you with a richness of synth textures, layers of broken beats and dreamy chords alongside Jenna's "float" mantra hypnotising you deeper and deeper. Reaching the last section of the track though you're woken from that hypnotic groove with a switch to a raw and energetic breakbeat sure to get any crowd moving.

'Keep It H 2000', the final track on the A side, has a real flavour of Fatima to it emanating from Jenna's blissful vocals - laid over the top of sustained Rhodes, weighty synth lines and dynamic drums.

Flip it over and there's a tougher intensity to 'Future Dance (It'll Be OK)', coupling rhythmic stabs with jazzy chord progressions, laced behind a groove that wouldn't be out of place lighting up the floor at a Co-Op night.

To close out the e.p. you're given a sensory overload through Jenna's staggered, overlaid vocals panned to come at you from every angle - it's the perfect outro to both stun you and leave you wanting more. And if this extremely well-polished, first key release is a sign of things to come, Pedro's name will be becoming a lot more familiar in years to come.

Roy Hamilton/H B Barnum - Earthquake 7"
OSV202
Outta Sight
7"-Vinyl15.04.202015.APR.20

Hip-HopFunkSoul

Outta Sight’s collectable ‘Classics’ series continues with two real heavyweight’s of the rare soul scene, face-to-face for the very first time. Together, these two icons helped define, not only Northern Soul, but the soul music genre… and now, almost sixty years on, they go head to head.

In the blue corner is former commercial artist and amateur heavyweight boxer Mr Roy Hamilton who set the dancefloors trembling across the North of England when his 1962 “Earthquake” was finally unleashed on the Northern Soul scene. Hamilton was already a huge star in America scoring two R&B No.1’s in 1954 and ’55 with the standards “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Unchned Melody”. But, he will forever be remembered in the U.K. for his Northern anthems “Crackin’ Up Over You”, “The Panic Is On”, “You Shook Me Up” and the explosive “Earthquake”.

In the red corner is the multi-talented actor, pianist, arranger, producer, songwriter and singer Mr H. B. Barnum who’s early belter “It Hurts Too Much To Cry” belies its 1962 recording date. Barnum also scored on the rare soul scene with “Three Rooms With Running Water”, “The Record” and the awesome “Heartbreaker”.

But his contribution far exceeds his personal output with writer, producer and arranger credits on a slue of floorfillers inlcuding Judy Street’s “What”, Earl Wright’s “Thumb A Ride” and The Magnificents’ ”My Heart Is Calling You”, to name but a few.

SIX NINE RECORDS LTD
7"-Vinyl24.04.202024.APR.20

Hip-HopSoulFunk

The independent UK label Six Nine Records Ltd, based in Newcastle upon Tyne, proudly presents Skull Snaps and their first release with
previously unreleased material. Skull Snaps were active during the 1970s (during the 1960s they called themselves The Diplomats and released a good amount of singles) and stand behind one of music history's most sampled drum breaks, which can be found in their 1973 tune "It's A New Day". Their releases from this time are true collector's items and fetch good money on the rare record market today. This new release contains two songs taken from a live session from the 1980s, which haven’t been heard by the world until now. Definitely not to be missed as it is a limited UK press with small hole and full colour printed picture cover!
