Hip-HopReggaeReggae-Dub

Studio One Records and the seminal in-house band The Skatalites both created and defined Ska in the process making Jamaican music famous throughout the world. This compilation features classic vocal and instrumental tracks from The Skatalites, Bob Marley and The Wailers, Delroy Wilson alongside super rare tracks from the likes of Ken Boothe, The Maytals, Jackie Mittoo, Tommy McCook and many more.

“Ripping Ska compilation. The sound is tremendous as well thanks to Studio One recording techniques - already superior at the birth of Reggae - and Soul Jazz mastering. Nice mix of stomping Skatalites; Tommy McCook instrumentals and vocal tracks from many of the prime exponents of the genre. It's a superior Studio One Ska compilation what's not to like?” The Face.

Hip-HopReggaeReggae-Dub

The legendary Skatalites, alongside the later Studio One in house bands - the Soul Vendors, Sound Dimension, Soul Defenders and Brentford Road All Stars – were as much a part of the classic Studio One sound as were the singers that they accompanied such as Alton Ellis, Horace Andy, Marcia Griffiths and Bob Marley and The Wailers.

This album features many of the musicians involved with Studio One who literally defined Reggae music. From the Skatalites members Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, Jackie Mittoo to killer sidemen such as trombonist Vin Gordon (A/K/A Don Drummond Jnr), saxophonist Cedric "Im" Brooks, keyboardist and Twelve Tribes of Israel member Pablove Black.

Many of the rhythms that these musicians created became the back-bone of the Jamaican musical world and their songs have been replayed and re-versioned by 1000's of Reggae producers ever-since.

The album features classic and super-rare tracks all recorded under Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd’s supervision at the legendary recording studio and record label. As well as sixteen killer tracks the album comes with new sleevenotes and photography by Dennis Morris and Adrian Boot making this another essential Studio One Reggae release for connoisseurs of Reggae and newcomers alike.

As winter strikes, the summery SFV Acid reappears fully-fledged with some sluggish San Fernando Valley funk and his signature acidic aesthetics. Mostly slow-burning tracks that meander the boulevards, twitchy due the right dose of acid and vocal jabs scattered across. It's always summer in the valley.

Enlightment - Agape Love

Nature Sounds
12inch21.04.202021.APR.20

HouseElectroElectronicaFunkyHip-HopFunkSoul

Founded by ordained bishop Larry H. Jordan and his brother-in-law Frank Tinsley in the early 1980's, Enlightment was among the first groups to fuse modern R&B production with gospel themes.

After providing the group’s ultra-rare debut album Faith Is The Key with a proper release, Nature Sounds is now making another lost classic from Enlightment available to the world. “Agape Love” was
a 1988 promo-only 12” single pressed in anticipation of a second Enlightment album, which unfortunately never came to fruition.

Previously only available in extremely limited promotional quantities, “Agape Love” has been re-pressed off the original vinyl parts and will now be hitting record shelves worldwide. “This is well-deserved reissue,” says famed DJ and record collector Kon, who calls the record “a lost gem that slipped through the cracks of obscurity.”

Raphael Saadiq - Instant Vintage
GET54101LP
GET ON DOWN
2x12inch03.03.202003.MAR.20

Hip-HopR & BHip-Hop

Raphael Saadiq did not rest on his laurels after bringing his famed R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné! to a close in 1997. In the coming years he was a highly sought after producer and session musician, leaving his mark on tracks by D'Angelo, The Roots, and Erykah Badu, and briefly formed the supergroup Lucy Pearl with Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest, and Dawn Robinson of En Vogue.

After nearly a decade of working in the realm of New Jack Swing, Saadiq's interests gradually gravitated towards the burgeoning musical subgenre of neo-soul. 2002 marked Saadiq's debut as a solo act with the release of Instant Vintage, a record so titled to joke on the fleeting nature of pop culture. It proved to be an album many years ahead of the curve, with it's singular focus on organic, instrumentation-driven soul.

(With guest appearances from D'Angelo, T-Boz of TLC, Angie Stone, Calvin Richardson, Hi-Tek, and the South Central Chamber Orchestra, among others.) A record that foresaw the arrival of the neo-soul revival, and the mainstream success of nostalgia-mining artists like Amy Winehouse, John Legend, Mark Ronson, and many more.

Instant Vintage underperformed commercially upon it's release, having the misfortune of being released at a time when pop audiences were more inured with the electro-infused sounds of The Neptunes and Timbaland. In spite of this the record was an absolute marvel to critics, who praised Raphael Saadiq's shimmering sounds, and effortlessly warm reproduction of the classic 70's soul of acts like Curtis Mayfield, merged with a then modern neo-soul sensibility. Heavy praise from the likes of Chicago Sun-Times, The Village Voice, USA Today, and many more.

Instant Vintage would also go on to earn a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album in 2003, and would be ranked as one of the Best R&B Albums of the 00's by Rhapsody. In the nearly two decades since the album's release in 2002, Instant Vintage has never been reissued on vinyl. Get On Down aims to change all that in 2020 with this sterling LP reissue, featuring remastered audio and an intricately re-created sleeve of the original, enigmatic cover art.

Hip-HopFunkSoul

The true definition of a "rare-groove", "Windy City Theme" is a triumphant, funky paean to the spiritual home of the Blues, Jazz and House music. Often closely guarded by the rare record cognoscenti this scarce 45 on the Chi Sounds label was originally released in 1976 and became a solid staple of London's underground rare-groove scene, finding favour with DJ's like Norman Jay and Giles Peterson with the track even appearing on their groundbreaking "Journeys By DJ" mix. B-side cut "Show Me The Way" is not to be overlooked either, a smooth, stepping soul number with lush orchestration and yearning vocals featuring the amazing arrangements of The Chi-Sound Orchestra, sounding like a beautiful cross between MFSB and Marvin Gaye. An utterly essential 45 for any serious

PHARAWAY SOUNDS
7"-Vinyl15.06.202015.JUN.20

Hip-HopR & BSoulPopGarage Rock

LIMITED TO 300 COPIES. NOT TO BE REPRESSED.

Raw and wild soul-funk-r&b-garage from 1970, recorded and released only in Algeria! Imagine JAMES BROWN fronting THE SONICS!

Born in Puerto Rico, Bob Destiny grew up in Harlem (USA) and has a fascinating story: from starting playing piano as a child (self-taught) and tap dancing with the Five Chocolate Drops when he was 6 years old, to meeting Billie Holliday and playing with her; from appearing in a film with Shirley Temple to musicals in Broadway, dancing at Mankiewicz’s movie “Cleopatra”, singing at the San Remo Festival...

In 1969, Bob went to Algeria to teach music at the Algerian National Theater. He also continued with his singing career while living there. In 1970, he released a couple of 45s featuring “Wang Dang” and “Mahna (Troubles)” on the Freedom Musique label. He was also involved with the creation of the first Pan African Festival with Mahboud Bati and Frank Pourcel.

These 45s are very rare and were first discovered by the great Habibi Funk label a few years ago, who included “Wang Dang” on one of their compilations. For our Pharaway Sounds 45, we’ve selected one track from his first 45 and another from his second one.

After playing in Morocco with Hahmed Maraki and forming bands like The Fingers, Bob arrived to Spain in the 80s. He created a jazz school in Zaragoza and was involved with the famous “Jazz en la Margen” festival. In the 90's, Bob move to France, focusing in composition, gospel, musicals and soundtracks. Sadly, he passed away on March 31, 2016.

It's a Turkish Jazz-Funk Delight...!

Some hard-hitting rhythm section blending into a prime example of the swingin' sound of the cool influences of Jazz, Funk and Folk music, with a Turkish flavor. It's fantastic funk jazz groove built on a titanium synth bassline!

An instrumental library of traditional Turkish Jazz session reaching a great climax in drums and percussion sets + electro-bass break with moog and synthesizers from the beginning to the end.

Traditional Turkish songs are based on drums and synth bass over moody 5/8 fuzz guitars...

Album recorded & released in Denmark, 1979, and it has never been released in Turkey.

Hip-HopHip-Hop

Cassette

During the past decade, the Chicago-based multiinstrumentalist and producer, NNAMDI, has quietly become one of the most prolific musicians of the modern era. Whether under his own name or one of the many bands he's spent time in, either as a full-on member or merely a touring partner, there's been an endless stream of music that NNAMDI has had his hands in. Pair that with the fact he co-owns his label, Sooper Records (KAINA, Sen Morimoto), and it'd be easy to wonder how he finds time to do anything other than make music. On BRAT, the follow-up to 2017's critically acclaimed DROOL, NNAMDI removes the veil to show just how much effort and energy it takes to work at such a high level without any breaks. That process of finding a balance between NNAMDI the performer and Nnamdi Ogbonnaya the person is what fuels BRAT, an introspective record that's still as dexterous and exciting as anything that's come before, but is intimate and hushed, commanding a listener's full attention from the very start. Like all things he's done before, BRAT proves that genre classifications don't really work here. BRAT is part hip-hop, part indie-rock, part gospel, and part West African music, and in NNAMDI's hands, these seemingly disparate pieces fit together snuggly, as if there was never a question of their compatibility. NNAMDI wrote, performed, and recorded BRAT by himself.

PML Beatz - Pedra de 800 Kg
P029
Príncipe
12inch30.05.202030.MAY.20

Hip-HopRaggatonBeatsExperimental

Darkside Kuduro continuum styles from Lisbon’s PML Beatz, racking up the heaviest Angolan-Portuguese gear this side of Nazar on their debut for Príncipe Lobbed from their respective bases in Lisbon and Luxembourg (one of the countries Portuguese have traditionally sought a better life), the three tracks of ‘Pedra de 800 Kg’ hustle a strong introduction to siblings Lisandro and Ivan aka PML Beatz.

Drawing on a shared Cape Verdean and Angolan heritage, the duo started producing in their early teens back in 2010, but got distracted, as teenagers are prone to do, before returning to the software circa 2017 with a little help from their their former neighbour and mentor, DJ BeBeDeRa - whose grinding tarraxhos have been issued on 7” by Promesses - to finally produce this killer trio of club workouts.

Hypnotic and hard in a signature Príncipe style that firmly resonates with SA Gqom, strains of syncopated UK Bass and mutations seeping out of all corners of the internet, the EP kicks off with a mesmerising mix of New Beat-esque choral drones with synthetic Berimbau-like riffs and flinty rhythm in No Cubau’, before ‘Manganza’ doubles down the darkness with murderous bass drones and distorted drops recalling Durban taxi techno vibes, and ‘Pedra de 800 Kg’ - so titled after their father’s motivational expression “That’s easier to lift than a 500 Kg rock” - recklessly pushes the dance to a steely, uptempo frenzy.

Various - Elsewhere Junior I-A Collection of Cosmic Children’s Songs
ZZZV19008
Music for Dreams
2x12inch23.12.201923.DEC.19

HouseBalearicHip-HopDownbeat

For 'Music For Dreams’ collector’s series, we aim to bring you something a little different, something a little out there. After eclectic contributions from Jan Schulte, Moonboots and most recently Basso, we’ve lent the slot to Belgian sonic globetrotter DJ soFa. As always, he’s been granted supreme curatorial sovereignty, and trust us, he held us to our word on that one. For elsewhere Jr I, soFa takes us on a trip to the alluring and magical reality of childhood - and a trip, it is.

This double LP features both new and old compositions from a wide range of countries, all centered around the youngest citizens of planet earth. The compilation has been 2.5 years in the making, with soFa collecting obscure pieces from all over the world and inspiring young collaborators to produce new tracks mostly by means of analogue synthesizers and vintage drum machines. The result is a thematically and sonically homogenous collage of cosmic children’s music.

'soFa' starts us off with Milo Kolarov’s exercise in sonic imagery ‘Analogue Beam’, a story about animal characters, presented to us as distinct motifs of bleeps and blitzes. Next up is the surreal jigsaw puzzle dub ‘Totti und Pippo’ by Jah Limonardi and 'Die Kleine Gräfin Dubski'.

Here, we come bouncing on giant, iridescent mushrooms, lulled deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole by incantations of a child’s voice. Throughout, the record is full of these synaesthetic properties, immersing the listener in creative ways, nudging you down hidden experiential pathways.
All of the tracks, more precisely ... they were pleasantly engaging, often blooming with charming grooves and provided with a whimsical melody.

Various - The World Of Northern Soul
0831295
Decca Records
12inch21.02.202021.FEB.20

Hip-HopSoul

"In the late 1960's, Decca was playing to its strengths – mass marketing classical and easy-listening recordings just as it had been doing since the late 1920's. In April of 1968, Decca entered into a venture that would see its repertoire prominently displayed by non-specialist retailers, and after much resistance, it moved into the world of budget releases, with the beginning of its much loved ‘The World Of’ series in 1968.

The first album set out the series’ stall perfectly, focusing on one of the label’s biggest-selling artists. Its whole raison d’être was to drive sales of the artist’s repertoire: inviting consumers to dip in here and discover more, while the rear sleeve clearly offered the catalogue numbers of the parent albums. Later, the World Of ’s would also become treasure troves for rarities and one-offs.nitially, the series stayed in the ‘Easy’ territory and by the end of ’69, 54 titles were available. Unsurprisingly, given the label’s heritage, classical repertoire would also become a mainstay.

The first classical LP was one of the early issues:
The World of Johann Strauss. The series treated classical music much like pop: compiling the most popular pieces and presenting them across two sides.

• 180 GRAM HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL • CUT AT ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS • NEWLY-COMPILED SELECTIONS FROM DECCA’S ILLUSTRIOUS CATALOGUE • Please note: The World of Nothern Soul - previous orders still stand.

Graham Mushnik - Peeping Through the Porthole
CATALP030
CATAPULTE RECORDS
12inch13.03.202013.MAR.20

Hip-HopR & BSoul

Graham Mushnik is back with his 3rdLP, featuring his fantastically groovy Group Martini for the first time on record – also featuring the vocal talents of Derya Yıldırım and Benny Gordini.

Acclaimed as one of Europe's contemporary "wizards of the organ manual", Mushnik (who plays in Malphino, Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek and Guess What, amongst other bands and projects) invites us to a curious and sinister lounge cocktail party, where Western and Eastern sounds collide in the manner of a classy spy movie soundtrack from the 70's.

Accompanied on side A by his Group Martini (which features members of Mazalda, Imperial Tiger Orchestra, Les Pythons de la Fournaise and Phat Dat), he leads us through the action via fantastic melodies (starting with the majestic "Group Martini's Theme"), impeccable funk beats and extraordinary solos – flutes, Persian santur, moogs, saxophones, bass and bongos all get their chance to freak out!

Side B finds Mushnik alone playing all instruments on an epic instrumental trilogy ("At Sea/The Wreck/Gone All Jetsam") that travels from folky prog moods to the hip-hop side of his production where loops become deep and hypnotic. The album treats us with 2 vocals tracks, respectively "Hoş Geldin" (which translates as "Welcome"), another epic and funky journey beautifully sung by Derya Yıldırım, and "Flow Up, Flow Down", a cross between Disco and Afro-funk, soulfully interpreted by Benny Gordini from French Soul-funk band The Slow Slushy Boys.

All wrapped up in stunning gatefold artwork, "Peeping Through The Porthole" offers a 360° view on Graham Mushnik's imaginarium – yet don't miss Group Martini's rare live shows across Europe this year!

Trying to build cultural bridges across the world, powering connection between dancefloor activists, Hard Fist thinks Princes Of Abzu not only as a compilation but as a tool to give space for expression to local legends like Kaan Duzarat in Istanbul or to upcoming artist such as Linja or Feller who are doing here their debut on wax. A tool to promote another vision of dance music, obviously produced to dance, but also to think, to raise curiosity, to keep a daring spirit and an open mind.

DRS - From The Deep
SPACECADET001

Hip-HopHip-Hop

*REPRESS*

Long distance mission manoeuvres: DRS digs out the keys to his shiny new mothership for the second ever Space Cadet voyage. Once again there are seats on board for everyone. Buckle up and bring supplies, this one goes deep...

Guerrilla-dropped with no hype, build-up or blaring pregame klaxons, 'From The Deep' is the Manchester MC's most raw, honest and revealing album to date. File under switch-flipped; Delroy Pottinger's third solo artist LP takes us right back to his hip-hop foundations as he sets the coordinates for Planet Roots and gives us a classic vibe time trip that's every bit as personal as it is gilded; soulful, stripped back, soaked in positive messages but shadowed by a bleak demons, 'From The Deep' is the sound of a man hauling his way out of a black hole with pure hope.

Produced with rising Manchester beatmaker Pitch 92 over the course of an inspired two week writing exploration, 'From The Deep' is DRS's first hip-hop LP since his debut post-Broke N English solo album 'Grown Man Biznizz' in 2010 and tells the story of a man with a painted on smile and a barbed soul behind the bars. His own personal way of dealing with tragic losses, knowing his heart that will never fully heal, each track on 'From The Deep' is Delroy's message to himself and anyone who's suffering that things will change.

A way of returning to reality and putting inner demons on blast, this is less of a trip into outer space but more of a safe landing back to earth from outer space where it's easier to hide from the truth. It's a toolkit that reminds you that life is turbulent and seriously shit sometimes, but there are priceless factors that make it worthwhile; family, friends, love, music, adventures, real connections and reliable high grade weed vendors.

It also reminds you how funky, soulful and versatile DRS is. Renowned for his skills at both true blues and raw doubletime brutality across the drum & bass spectrum, 'From The Deep' flexes back to Delroy's most craft honing chapter as an artist and as a founding member of Manchester hip-hop trio Broke N English. A groundbreaking act in Manchester's music scene, the fact all three members - DRS, Konny Kon and Strategy - have gone on to set next level benchmarks and inspire the city's next generation speaks volumes and continues to echo in the city's next generation.

Rooted but not nostalgic. Emotional but not sentimental. Deep but more focused than anything Delroy has ever created to date. No hype, build up or klaxons are necessary for a body of work as honest as this; long distance mission manoeuvres are ultimately timeless. Stay tuned for the next astral transmission.

" LaRombé " is one of the most talented songwriters I have come across in my years of working for Jazzman and Athens of the North. Having gone through much of his tape archive it obvious what a powerhouse of song writing and composition this man is.

His music is of the strongest calibre all the way, from his first release in 1979 to present day. All of his Soul, Disco & R&B stands the test of time. It's easy to have one record that with luck ends up great but another thing to write record after record with great hooks you can't leave alone. Athens of the North is very proud to present 'From Philly', Vinyl and CD comes with sleeve notes featuring interview and photos.

Congo meets Jamaica on this exceptional reggae album from the late seventies. Made in collaboration with Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Seskain Molenga and with liner notes by David Katz.
The Belgian labels Planet Ilunga, specializing in researching, documenting and releasing Congolese music from the fifties to seventies, and Roots Vibration, devoted to reissuing classic roots singles and albums, join forces for the first time. Together making one of the most enigmatic reggae albums available again. Recorded and produced in the late seventies at Lee Perry's Black Ark studio in Kingston, Jamaica.

The album which Congolese artists Seskain Molenga (African Fiesta National, Empire Bakuba, TPOK Jazz...) and Kalo Kawongolo recorded together with Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry is a most remarkable project to surface from the Black Ark studio. It's also one of the most misrepresented of Perry’s productions, with myriad explanations for its existence falling far short of what actually happened.

The intention of the original band, formed in France by the producer Bernadette Duget and composed of a mixture of Congolese, Senegalese and French musicians, was to head to Jamaica to record a rock album with African undercurrents in Lee Perry's Black Ark studio. However, in Jamaica things didn't go according to plan and the project turned out to be a failure. The Congolese duo Seskain Molenga and Kalo Kawongolo continued working with Lee 'Scratch' Perry and this collaboration would eventually bear an unexpected reggae fruit. These recordings were originally released on LP in 1979 and re-released in 1991, yet the vinyl album remains highly sought-after.

Now finally re-issued with extensive liner notes by the American journalist, author and reggae aficionado David Katz (assisted by Bart Cattaert (Planet Ilunga) for the interviews with Seskain Molenga). This reissue sheds more concerted light on the complex tale that lies behind the work. Most notably thanks to the emergence of 'new' eyewitness accounts such as Seskain Molenga, Wasis Diop and Lee Perry.

The debut album by Seskain Molenga and Kalo Kawongolo remains a unique slice of musical ingenuity, an intoxicating sonic storm that resulted from their temporary presence at the magical space of the Black Ark.

The sound recording and quality of the original album is a story on its own (you will be able to read about this in our liner notes). It was quite an odyssey to get the sound right, without losing the original energy and ambiance of the recordings.

Vinyl-only release

* LP comes in a gatefold album sleeve with extensive liner notes (in English)
* 180 gram vinyl
* Restored and remastered tracks. Lacquer cut made at Dubplates & Mastering
* Artwork by Fiona E. Oikonomidou
