Rochelle Rabouin - This Is My Year
DFL001
Discs Of Fun And Love
7"-Vinyl30.10.201930.OCT.19

Hip-HopSoul

Originally recorded in 1977 at Malaco Studios and Sound City this still relatively unknown modern soul dancer is ready to light up dance floors, with the smooth downtempo flip side perfect for the afters. Once a singer in the Earl White Revue, Rochelle had her moment on this beautiful crossover record. After talking to some of the top modern soul DJs across the world, this record still seemed illusive for the deepest of diggers.

The record has been remastered by Grammy nominated mastering house the Carvery.

Discs of Fun and Love is a reissue label run by DJs and diggers Miche (Spiritland’s programmer) and Frederika (a resident at Spiritland).

Soul Jazz Records Presents - NIGERIA SOUL POWER 70
SJRLP446
Soul Jazz Records
2x12inch04.11.201904.NOV.19

Hip-HopFunkSoulAfrobeatPopRock

Soul Jazz Records’ Nigeria Soul Power 70 album showcases the influence of funk, rock and disco on Nigerian music during the 1970s. Originally released as a now-long-out-of-print collectors’ 7” RSD box, this fully expanded album release now also includes extra tracks from Sonny Okosuns, Wings, Chief Kollington Ayinla and more. While for many people the fusion of funk and jazz music with Nigerian rhythms and aesthetics began with Fela Kuti and his afro-beat sound, in fact this can be traced further back to the phenomena of the 1960s Nigerian artists and house bands in nightclubs and hotels who interpreted US soul and pop music with a local flavour and none more so than Geraldo Pino, the ‘African James Brown’ who features heavily in this collection. Other similarly inspired Nigerian funk and soul artists featured here included Tony Grey and his Ozimba Messengers and Don Bruce and The Angels. Nigeria Soul Power 70 includes a number of tracks from the group Wings originally known as BAF (Biafran
Air Force) Wings, an army band formed during the Biafran civil war in Nigeria. The groups’ heavy mixture of funk, rock and African styles was popular among many Nigerian groups at the time.
Beneath the shadow of the few Nigerian artists who signed international recording deals in the 1970s – Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Chief Ebenezer Obey – lies of vast wealth of largely undiscovered musical transmutation and cultural cross-pollination, and included here are heavy afro-funk/rock and disco tracks
from artists such as the legendary Sonny Okosuns as well as rare cuts from little-known outside of Nigeria - groups such as Colomach and MFB. Most of these obscure artists signed to major labels in Nigeria in the commercial slipstream that opened up as Philips, Decca and EMI tried to emulate the international
success of the big three international Nigerian artists. Finally featured here is Kollington Ayinla, one of the co-founders of Nigerian Fuji music, who gives us perhaps the heaviest of all tracks on this album. Ayinla is the great moderniser of the Fuji sound and in the late 1970s began adding Bata drums and synthesizers to his authentic music to create a powerful and heavy new fusion of traditional and modernist aesthetics, embracing both new technology and experimentation while rooted firmly in Nigerian historical lineage. Nigeria Soul Power 70 is released as a heavyweight gatefold double vinyl LP (+ free download code),
deluxe slipcase CD and digital album.

30/70 - Fluid Motion
RS028LP
Rhythm Section International
12inch24.10.201924.OCT.19

Hip-HopSoul

With their third album 'Fluid Motion', Melbourne's 30/70 are set to soar into higher territory as the face of Australia's newest wave of soul-influenced brilliance. From the swirling opening pads of "Brunswick Hustle" all the way through to the sax-laden shimmer of "Flowers" at its close, 'Fluid Motion' is an instant classic, effortlessly shifting between neo-soul and languid, astralfacing jazz textures and authentic vignettes of UK club music history.
It's a formula that those already caught in 30/70's celestial web are fully aware of; first defined on the local heat of their 2015 debut 'Cold Radish Coma' and majestically expanded upon with their critically acclaimed 2017 release 'Elevate' on Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section INTL (mixed by Hiatus Kaiyote's Paul Bender). 'Elevate' did exactly that - elevating both the scope of the band's sound as well as their standing in the local and international community.
Since the last record was released, the music has brought the band on world tours and to the attention of the wider public and key tastemakers alike. Strongly supported by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft, Jamie Cullum, Matthew Halsall and Bradley Zero, the UK has become something of a second home for 30/70.

Carlton Jumel Smith & Cold Diamond & Mink - I'd Better
TR736
Timmion Records
7"-Vinyl29.10.201929.OCT.19

Hip-HopR & BSoul

The only cover tune on Carlton Jumel Smith's "1634 Lexington Ave." album is not really a cover at all, since it was first cut by Carlton himself already 10 years ago. The sultry 2009 edition of "I'd Better", that was put out on the short-lived UK Soulchoonz label, is a nice piece of programmed mid-tempo modern soul. The new version, now getting a 7" single treatment on Timmion, still sounds miles away from the polished earlier effort.

It starts off with a nice guitar led beat before settling into a sweet Tighten Up groove, a funky road which still has plenty curves to explore, even for Cold Diamond & Mink, who are certainly not lifting water from this particular well for the first time. What remains naturally is Carlton's ultra-soulful vocal performance, and a message of manning up to the max, staying true to your word in front of something divine.

It's not that often you hear a more recent version of a song sounding so that you would think it's the old version. Essentially, what you get is a beautiful piece of xover soul, with timeless swagger, and an instrumental with soulful legs of its own.

Various - Hamburg Soul Weekender
LEGO169
LEGERE RECORDINGS
12inch29.10.201929.OCT.19

Hip-HopR & BSoul

The weekender is a very British thing, particularly combined with that other very British subculture: northern soul. When the first National Soul Weekender took place in Caister in 1979, some ways of celebrating the rare soul music scoring the scene had already been well established: sweaty all-nighters happened all over the country, where dedicated dancers and collectors met and kept the fire burning. And all-dayers came into being, allowing the people to indulge in their passion in different places, with less strict licensing obligations. The clues were all there. British people liked the idea to escape their urban working lives to the seaside on weekends. And the mod culture, always strongly related to soul music, followed suit, partying (and sometimes fighting) on coastal promenades, beaches and clubs, as immortalized by tabloid headlines, and a certain rock concept album plus movie. The brilliant idea in Caister, however, was to combine all-nighters and all-dayers, and given the unreliability of the British weather, the concept was due for success. If it rained, you just danced in a club, and other places. If not, you had fun at sea, and then danced, day and night, the whole weekend.

Across the North Sea in Germany, it seemed like only matter of time that all this would catch on. And indeed, when the British mod revival of the late 1970s hit continental shores, it ran through open doors, and the soul part established itself as a subculture as stubborn and ardent. The German weekenders followed a different path though. Starting in 1990 in Berlin and then led by annual events in Nürnberg and later Bamberg, Dresden, Leipzig, Bremen, München, Aachen and more, the locations were in cities. Hamburg is located very near to the UK and accordingly anglophile, and came fully equipped with a sizeable harbour and airport, and so what happened in the UK arguably left a quicker and bigger mark there than elsewhere in Germany. The city also had a long tradition of dancing to soul music to rely on, and a vital club culture, with a long string of cherished soul nights like the Soul Allnighter at Kir, Shelter Club, For Dancers Only and more recently The Soul Seven, Motte Allnighter, Cole Slaw Club, Cool Cat Club and 45 Degrees, just to name a few. But, strangely enough, it had no soul weekender.

In 2007 this changed, when Ralf Mehnert and Jan Drews Tarazi established the Hamburg Soul Weekender, with Tolbert taking care of the all-dayer part. As the three of them were longtime respected DJs and collectors, the weekender had notable line-ups right from the start, and every year a thousand international, national and local soul enthusiasts gather in the storied venue Gruenspan in the seminal Reeperbahn area, to dance and party to the finest 60s and 70s northern soul, modern soul, funk, r&b and other related trends within the scene that were always spotted early on, and with a keen eye. The music has been played by over 120 top of the league DJs from all over the globe so far, and it was always spread across a long weekend of two all-nighters, one all-dayer, a boat cruise through the harbour and an after party.

Cyne - Water For Mars
PMC171
Project Mooncircle
2x12inch06.12.201906.DEC.19

Hip-HopHip-Hop

The songs on this record were created over the span of about 4 or 5 years (roughly 2004 – 2009), though every track was revisited, mixed, and mastered in 2009. The record displays the full spectrum of the “CYNE sound,” including the growth of the band, our collective tastes, and the process of our songwriting. It starts on a positive note about moving forward, building community, and taking on personal responsibility (these are themes that resonate throughout the record). At times, the record grows into something very ethereal and cosmic, alongside a contrast of something that hits harder, musically and lyrically. With each subsequent ‘movement’ we see a blend of introspective thought, social commentary, and a sound weighted in a more classic, uplifting tradition. This album constantly sways back and forth between the lines of classic hip hop, textural music, and a progressive selection of words and sound that are definitively CYNE.

Joining CYNE on “Water For Mars” are track collaborators Daedelus, Depth Affect, and Ape School, as well as remixers ROM (featuring Roberto Lange / Helado Negro), Mexicans With Guns, and Jay Appleseed.

“Water For Mars” is now available on vinyl for the first time. The exclusive remastered deluxe set comes out worldwide on limited gatefold red double vinyl and digital.

Speaking about the record, Mala said:
'The making of this record happened so naturally, the words inspired me to create the music. Their message and intention was set. Conscious vibrations using words and sounds.'

Oso Leone - Gallery Love
AMB1903
Apollo
12inch26.04.201926.APR.19

Hip-HopFunkSoulPopBlues

After a 5-year hiatus following the release of their acclaimed sophomore release, Barcelona based outfit Oso Leone return with an alluring new album touching on soul, funk, R&B and pop. Following their meditative self-titled debut and its captivatingly sparse follow-up 'Mokragora'; 'Gallery Love' achieves what it sets out to do and more, taking the listener on an auditory journey with lucid song structures that ebb and flow like the waves. A sublime musicalàexperience, its hypnotic repetition is an ode to refinement, and the gentle forays into ambient electronica and jazz show impeccable restraint and sensitivity: 'Gallery Love's' opening track and first single 'Virtual U' was born from very few elements. A beat on the MPC, a few chords on the Korg Trident and some gently lilting vocal jams create the structure, like a digital collage of feelings as vocalist Xavier Oso describes it. "I see this song as a hyperobject, an external entity moulding modern relationships and shadowing us. An anti-form creating distance in the closeness. A vast empty space between two islands." Recorded at his Mother's house in San Sebastian, 'Best In You' was the last song written on the record, whilst the mystically poetic 'Agró Blanc' is named after a type of heron that dwells in Mallorca. The band describe 'River of Jasmines' as the most mysterious track on the record, the lyrics coming to Xavier during a nap in the studio. "I recorded the vocals in one take with no set lyrics, just the lines that came to my mind. I tried a second go but it was impossible trying to imitate those melodies, so I left it with all its imperfections," he explains. 'Vernal Pools' is a funky existentialist piece, a reflection of a landscape in a pond, a contemplative loop, an iconic natural spot. A dubby & aqueous bassline conducts the title album's title track, it's ambient sounds featuring traces of kalimba and a field recording of an owl who frequented the house during the night. 'A Pale Blue Dot' is a floaty, dream-like jam and 'Samuel Sings' is a "calling to a lost soulmate." The dainty trance of 'Fountain At the Entrance' rounds things off in mesmerising fashion.

Emotional Rescue turn their attention to Rare Silk and their sublime cult classic "Storm". It's one of those rare tracks with a wonderful otherworldly quality that manages to be smooth and accessible, and somehow not like anything you've ever heard before. It must be somewhere in the mix, between the dreamy harmonized vocals, lush instrumentation and curious sense of space. HouseElectronicaHip-HopR & B

Clear/red vinyl Edition

2nd Drop Records release 'Seven Lies', the debut album by Felix Manuel aka Djrum (pronounced 'Drum'). Its sounds are inspired by the rawness of urban London, influences of Portishead, DJ Shadow and The Cinematic Orchestra, jungle, minimal techno, classic house, broken beat - all seamlessly segued with a nod to jazz vinyl and film music.
Fans will recognise Djrum's iconic tropes on 'Seven
Lies': widescreen atmospheres, dub chords, dusty and melancholic strings, obscure film samples. But this time its spread over a bigger, more luxurious canvas that dips like an undulating terrain of sound; techno troughs, bumpy hip hop breaks, euphoric
drum and bass, all filtered through the Djrum node.
Felix would admit himself he is a not a prolific producer. Preferring to craft and hone, often allowing music to mutate and diverge down different paths, his tracks often top the 8-9 min marks in
length. However, each track is never at risk of becoming staid or boring, quite the opposite as ideas mutate and evolve, subtle differences and nuances are evoked and explored.
Inspired by the sounds of Ninja Tune's Solid Steel
radio show, Oxford born/London based Felix became....

KUDU
7"-Vinyl17.10.201817.OCT.18

Hip-HopR & BSoulPopJazz

Official remastered, reissue of two of Esther Phillips' breathtaking covers from the early '70s.

Firstly, Esther's cover of Gil Scott-Heron's timeless masterpiece 'Home Is Where The Hatred Is'. A haunting tale of addiction filled with the rawest of emotions, that can only truly be covered by someone who has fought that same battle with dependency. The pain in Esther's voice completely conveys this vulnerability and does Gill Scott Heron's original total justice. Heart-wrenching and completely absorbing in its honesty, it's a sincere portrayal of the demons both artist's faced in their lives.

On the B side, an adaptation of Eddie Floyd's 'I've Never Found A Girl (To Love Me Like You Do)'. Phillips' trademark soulful tones suit this sweet serenade so well, with the passion oozing from every word she sings. Sit back, relax and prepare to have your heart melted all over again.

Ladymonix - Baby EP

12inch20.11.201920.NOV.19

HouseHip-HopSoul

Boss lady LADYMONIX has been busy. Only three month's after her last sold out release "Track 39" she has recently connected with Carl Craig's Planet E Label where she has the first single "WHO RU" on the Detroit Love Compilation Vol 3 to be released on November 18th. In addition to Djing and producing, her major focus is building Frizner Electric and her third release "Baby EP".
The first track, Baby, uses bouncy bass lines layered with lush synth melodies and hi's that whisper in your ear. Weaving in infectious claps and cleverly-flipped diva vocals that we are coming to know as signature "Monix sounds". Stefan Ringer's twist on the A1 rolls in slowly like sweat down your back at 4am.
The emotionally provocative samples are teased-in with measured confidence over a thudding bass, and then the whole groove cyphers into a break laden with glowing chords. Deep fantasy at it's core. In A Feeling, LadyMonix throws us headlong into the heat of the night; creating new life into a beloved classic vocal that fired up the 'Garage without fail decades ago.
A stealth B-Side that could and should be used as a lethal weapon.

Between a secluded cabin sanctuary, tucked away in the vast the stillness of Topanga Canyon, California, and a remote 18th century finca on the Balearic island of Mallorca, Spain, BATO BATO's debut album was patiently guided into being.

Three years writing and recording between these two locations brought the group's collaborators - Julian Smith and Henrik Jakobsson, with Balearic legend Nestor Casas Oche on trumpet - to their most natural sound conclusion.
The music of Bato Bato does not just reflect its organic sound habitats; it absorbs them - the duo set up studio and outdoor field sessions capturing various local environments including percussive field recordings and ambient cave sounds.
The album is an exploration in sound somewhere between the influence of exotica, psych, and dub - metered with latin / afro rhythms merged with experimental studio process and mixing.

Kapingbdi - Take A Look Outside
SONOL111
Sonorama Records
12inch25.09.201925.SEP.19

Hip-HopAfrobeat

The Drop X Dj Rum - Looking To The Sky / Takeover (dj Rum Remixes)
JUPITERSMELODY01
Jupiter's Melody
12inch12.10.201712.OCT.17

HouseElectronicaHip-HopReggae-Dub

Holy smokes batman! Brand new label straight outta MCR here as esteemed clubnight House of Wax launches a new, vinyl only imprint entitled Jupiter's Melody. What a coup for this debut release - The Drop are a London based, 9-piece reggae band operating since 2009 and with a soundsystem informed mentality. Fitting then that soundsystem operative, UKG legend and accalaimed bass music progressor DjRum is enlisted on remix duties to take these UK reggae skankers into the club for some grooving 2-step business. Felix Manuel has a storied history across UK dance music, most notably through releases on the iconic 2nd Drop records and a much lauded Resident Advisor mix. "Looking To The Sky" is THAT festival burner you wish you'd have packed for the Summer just gone. Gliding in on waves of undulating bass, punctuated by a typical but none less arresting 2-step beat, the rastaman vox from the Drop fit so well you won't actually believe it's a remix! Deep, emotive and beautifully poised, its retroist in many ways but this only adds to the warm and welcoming nature of the track. The flip is more introspective, and in someways melancholic, but with a massively uplifted message. Again, taken from a completely different OG piece (check youtube for The Drop's original vid), the vocal sits perfectly in another crisp and frenetic take on the UKG beat. This side builds slowly, with a defined song structure and lush musicality, never quite climaxing but simmering gently with a mindful glow. Appearing out of nowhere and instantly having us climbing over each other to see what was playing, we expect this to be a big smash here in Manchester over the coming months. If you've felt something missing in your life since MJ Cole, Zed Bias and Todd Edwards last released summat, then you could do much worse than adding this to your collection! Limited copies so get those orders in quick folks...

HouseDiscoHip-HopReggae

Killer compilation of Bro David's work.. It sounds like a blend between digital reggae, disco and calypso, ''Bredda David Obi'' calls it ''Kungo'', a mélange of traditional Belizean brukdown music. Hard to describe exactly - its various ingredients make it feel somewhat familiar but the recipe with which he blends them is slightly strange, fresh, intriguing and damn groovy!! BIG one..

Hip-HopR & BSoul

45 years after the band's inception, we are proud to announce the official re-issue of

CRAC's debut LP from 1980, "All For You" on KingUnderground.

The new reissue has a silver foil printed cover along with a printed inner sleeve and unseen band photos. The first 300 copies of the new package come with a bonus seven-inch, including two previously unreleased songs. Also available on all digital platforms. The music is comprised of a crossover mix of mellow jazzy soul, AOR, and hints of yacht rock, R&B, and uptempo funk. With its lush, forward thinking arrangements, "All For You" sounds like an album recorded during the peak of the late 70's "California Sound" at a forgotten studio off the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. Throw in a unique blend of East Coast flair and first class songwriting - it's a real treat for fans of this style and beyond.

DAMON LOCKS / BLACK MONUMENT ENSEMBLE - Where Future Unfolds
IARCLP25
INTERNATIONAL ANTHEMS RECORDING COMPANY
12inch25.07.201925.JUL.19

Hip-HopHip-Hop

Where Future Unfolds is a new work spirited by Chicago-based sound & visual artist Damon Locks. Starting as a solo sound collage piece (where Locks pulled samples from Civil Rights era speeches and recordings to create an improvisational pallet for performance on his drum machine), over 4 years the project has blossomed into his 15-piece Black Monument Ensemble - featuring musicians (including Angel Bat Dawid on clarinets and Dana Hall on drums), singers (alumni of the Chicago Children"s Choir), and dancers (members of Chicago youth dance company Move Me Soul). Where Future Unfolds is a live capture of the ensemble"s epic debut at the Garfield Park Botanical Conservatory on the West Side of Chicago. Recalling the spirits of Phil Cohran"s Artistic Heritage Ensemble, Eddie Gale"s Black Rhythm Happening, Archie Shepp"s Attica Blues, and Public Enemy"s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, the album presents an inspired, innovative & immediate intersection of gospel, jazz, activism & 808 breaks.
