It's a common misconception that the late legend of soul, Aretha Franklin, didn't cut a good record until she got out from under her Columbia Records contract and began recording with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (aka The Swampers) for Atlantic Records. While those Atlantic sides are some of the greatest deep Southern soul ever recorded, there's a lot to love about her earlier recordings. Sister Rosetta Tharpe is often referred to as "the godmother of rock and roll" for her pioneering guitar technique, use of distortion/reverb, and a 1963 UK tour with Muddy Waters that has been cited as a huge influence by Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Jeff Beck. Released in 1956, Gospel Train, is one of her finest albums and great introduction into her rocking gospel guitar style and powerful voice. Featuring the floor-filling album opener "Jericho" and book-ended by the stomping closer "99 1/2 Won't Do" this is a gospel album sure to get your body moving in a nearly sacrilegious way.

Until it's title was revealed at online auction last year, this elusive 45 treasure had remained an enigma. Amongst DJs and collectors, the most coveted 'island funk' secret in years was heard previously only as a cover-up played by the Ultimate Choice collective.

The 5th Degree Band emerged out of Montell Heights, Nassau (Bahamas) forming in the early '70s. Five musician friends with jazz leanings who practiced together religiously in a wooden shack built for band rehearsals in the drummer's backyard. Perfecting their craft to the sounds of Hendrix, Miles Davis and The Eagles, they immortalised their sound in 1975 recording 'You Got Me Hypnotized' at King Eric's Elite Studios. Self-released in small numbers, the single was available at Nassau's popular nightspots where they played residencies.

Forty-years later and the 5th Degree sound is a soul-funk essential, remastered and reissued via Backatcha Records.

Founded by J.D. and A.D Burrise in 1970, the 9th Creation went on for almost two decades and released 3 albums and half a dozen singles that regularly flirted with the US Charts, getting them featured on Soul Train in 1975 and allowing them to tour North America and Japan a few times over. 9th Creation regularly shared the bill with Irma Thomas, James Brown, The Whispers, The Sylvers, The Main Ingredient, Con Funk Shun and many others.

The music that J.D, A.D Burrise and their 10-12 band members created was a perfect combination of West Coast raw soul, disco and funk that resulted in a religious fan following across the globe.
To this day, The 9th Creation has been sampled by Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Artifacts, Quasimoto, 3rd Bass, Basement Jaxx and many others.

Past Due Records is proud to officially reissue the 9th Creation's essential full lengths and singles, carefully remastered and all in their original artworks. After 9th Creation's departure from Prelude (due to a lack of promotional support). J.D. Burrise brought the band back in the studio for a self produced and released album under his own outlet Burrise Way Productions. 'Superheroes' shows the band reaching maturity in their heavy soul, funk and disco sounds. A monster album reissued for the first time!

Recorded in a one-take session in 1978 in their hometown Chattanooga, Tennessee, 'Changes' and 'Bilalian Woman' are the only two songs the No I.D. band ever recorded. A self-funded limited run of copies were pressed and released on their own imprint, Bilal Sabir Publishing. With no promotional budget, the record received little support and went under the radar with remaining copies going to friends and family.

For years the single remained virtually unknown until discerning collectors spoke of it's existence and word spread.

Reissued for the first time, No I.D's message can be heard again, remastered and officially licensed through Backatcha Records.

Hey-O-Hansen is a dub duo from Berlin. Helmut Erler and Michael Wolf are originally from Austria; their blend of folkloristic melodies from their home country with the bass-loaded echo chambers of Jamaican roots has been called Austrodub. In 2010, Pingipung put together a compilation called 'Rare and Unreleased Austrodub Tracks' to express our love for the oeuvre of the duo. They have been pushing buttons in the Berlin underground scene since the year 2000, Helmut Erler being a mastering engineer at internationally renowned Dubplates & Mastering. 'Die Sonn und Der Mond' was the exclusive unreleased track composed for the occasion of this digital compilation. It is now available on vinyl for the first time, reworked, mastered and cut by Helmut Erler into this 2018 version. Kazumi sings the vocals for the track, and her Japanese accent in the lullaby adds to the psychedelic vibe of this wonderful hit. On the B side edit, Helmut does the singing, in his Austrian tongue with a vocoder and his acoustic guitar. This single is a part of Pingipung's ongoing Concentrical Series of 7'' records. Stone Foundation release the second 12" from their Top 30 album Everybody, Anyone. Both soulful tracks feature contributions from regular collaborator Paul Weller. Next Time Around (Side A) was co-written by Weller and the band. Carry The News (Side B) includes guest appearances from Weller (backing vocals) and his former Style Council bandmates Mick Talbot (piano) and Steve White (drums) - the first time all three have featured on a track together in well over two decades. Strictly limited to 500 copies worldwide.

Legendary songwriting siblings Richard and Robert Poindexter often during the 1960's frequented the CBS Building at 1697 Broadway and 53rd St (formerly known as the Ed Sullivan Building). On several of their visits they noticed a young man by the name of James 'B.J.' Barnes, using one of the building's many rehearsal rooms. Eventually the Poindexter's invited B.J' to partake in one of their open rehearsals. Asked to give their honest opinion regarding his voice, although they both liked him the brothers felt he didn't have a strong enough voice to be a solo performer and recommended that he join or became a group. The very next day B.J returned with two other singers by the names of Randy and Tony, again the Poindexter's liked what they heard but felt potentially this new ensemble still needed a fourth member, this situation was rectified with the addition of Douglas 'Smokey' Scott the groups eventually lead singer.
An initial recording session for this as yet un- named group lead to the recording of three unrehearsed songs 'Give A Damn', 'Push Button Love' and 'Beautiful Philosophy (Of Love)' with Robert Poindexter's wife Jackie Members contributing to the songwriting credits. With the group taking the name of 'The Internationals' they released their first single on the D'ar Recording Company label during 1969 'Give A Damn/Push Button Love' (D'ar 102) followed later in the same year with their second release 'Too Sweet To Be Lonely/Beautiful Philosophy' (D'ar 105). The lead track for this second 45 release a further Poindexter's composition which had been previously recorded on The O'Jay's as part of their 1968 Bell records 'Back On Top' album project and also by a songwriting colleague of the Poindexter's Ray Lewis (D'ar 101). The D'ar label was owned by Jeff Moore and a silent partner, with Moore overseeing the day to day running of the company.
The Internationals later broke up with Randy and Tony leaving the group, leaving 'B.J.' and 'Smokey', who with the addition of Charles Stodghill and with Richard Poindexter briefly filling in as a vocalist, became the hit group The Persuaders.
Richard Poindexter although a reluctant singer, did sing on both sides of The Persuaders 1971 million seller 'Thin Line Between Love &Hate/Thigh Spy' as well as a third song 'You Musta Put Something In Your Love' before returning to his preferred position as a songwriter/producer upon the arrival of a later new group member Willie Holland. Holland's vocals would then on feature on the remaining tracks from the groups 1972 'Thin Line Between Love & Hate' (Win Or Lose Productions) album. Today The Internationals second 45 is a highly regarded and sort after example of the genre of Soul known as 'Crossover'.

The Congo has given us many excellent guitar players, but only one of them earned the nickname 'Dieu de la Guitare'. With this compilation, made in collaboration with Ignace Mukendi (Comité de Gestion des Oeuvres Musicales de Docteur Nico) and the children of Docteur Nico, Planet Ilunga recalls the life and musical career of guitar player and band leader Docteur Nico. Nicolas Kasanda wa Mikalayi stood for over 20 years at the forefront of Congolese rumba. Backed through his whole career by his older brother Dechaud, Nico introduced numerous innovations to Congolese rumba such as a remarkable take on Dominican merengue, the use of the Hawaiian guitar, the introduction of new rhythms and dances such as the kiri-kiri and kono, and especially the shimmering, electrified modern versions of traditional tunes from his native Kasai. Thirty-three years after his death, we remember him as the most gifted guitar soloist of Congo. This anthology consists of an original selection of 26 exquisite songs, made between 1954 and 1970 with the groups African Jazz, Rock-a-Mambo, African Jazz Aile Nico, African Fiesta and African Fiesta Sukisa, many of them reproduced for the first time and mostly taken from the original 78 rpm or 45 rpm shellac/vinyl. The album is released on September 22, 2018, a symbolic date since it will be exactly thirty-three years after the early death of Nico in Brussels (1939 -1985).

Those of you who have followed Lucky Brown's tireless efforts since joining the Tramp family in 2007 can hear without a doubt the progress he and his various ensembles have made in almost every musical aspect. His songwriting skills amazed us right from the start of our relationship. What deserves much more respect is that during the past years he has proved to be probably one of the most authentic and steady but at the same time most innovative creative minds on the contemporary funk scene. Sure, many of today's funk bands are able to deliver a two-and-a-half minute funk killer, what distinguishes Lucky Brown, however, is his ability to create compositions which also employ the idiom as a means to deliver an artistic message, a hard-to describe feeling, or a conscious concept, just like James Brown and Fela Kuti mastered in the 1970s. Furthermore, Lucky has developed his own trademark production and sound whose depth and honesty form a basis from which his work will ever remain timeless.

But that's nothing new as you can hear on both of his first two albums for Tamp ("Lucky Brown's Space Dream, 2011 and "Mystery Road", 2015) On "Mesquite Suite" he is forging new paths by soaking up musical styles from all over the world to infuse with his own totally unique way of producing. Perfect examples are the Mulatu Astatke-ish tracks "Pauraque" and "Mother Corn Stalk" with its distinctive New Orleans Swamp-Jazz flavor. Fans of the Menahan Street Band or El Michels Affair may see in "Taterbug" and "Estrellas De La Tierra" their favourite tracks. But it's the entirety which makes this album standout.

It has been Lucky Brown's aim to paint for the world a picture of the vernacular jazz that America's neighborhoods once crafted as their own homegrown cultural heritage. Lucky Brown's music is a rejection of the elitism, classism, and status of the music industrial complex and is an antitoxin to it's resultant homogeneity. He wants with his heart and his art to transmit an everyday people's sound, made by everyday people, dedicated to the upliftment of all people.

The Unbelievable Two still is Mzuzu and Mucka, who lead us through nine new songs of speedy disco, down low boogie and even some smokin' reggae. Recorded in late 2017 and through the spring of 2018, "Power Plant" tells stories beyond the surface level. "Even though our music is purely instrumental, it doesn't mean we haven't got anything to say," explains Mzuzu, a respected and well-travelled vinyl DJ on the Germany funk/disco scene. "Boogie and disco are a universal language. With the influence of Afro, Latin, Reggae, even European electronic music you do not need a lot of words to tell a story which gets everybody connected. These songs are about our friends, our everyday life, how we life and what we feel."
