In his second volume of the Beat Tape series, Istanbul based acclaimed beat-maker Da Poet works his hip hop magic with 14 killer tracks. The album features collaborative beats of Gantz, Grup Ses, Ahu, Gokalp K, OtherMan and Ince Sarj.

Gemma & the Travellers give a nod to the early deep Soul, R&B, Northern Soul and Funk of the Sixties but add a refreshing twist with their unique songwriting. With her powerful and distinctive voice, Gemma M. is a true Soul woman who left the south of Italy as a teenager with a small bag in her hand and a bit of cash in her back pocket. Travelling through Europe, she met Robert P., an Anglo-Swedish guitarist living in Germany at the time and formed a travelling duo, which ended up returning to Robert's hometown London. After many years getting sick and tired of the city's distractions, they looked for a more creative environment beside the sea and fell in love with Northern Brittany, where they formed the band Gemma & the Travellers with friends and musicians from down the road.

Contrary to the "Motown" or "manufactured" model where the singer is rarely the songwriter, Gemma M. writes all of her songs with the help of Robert P. on the guitar. Her influences are Aretha Franklin and Julie Driscoll - genuine vibrations where life is your own creation! Recorded live at Lemoncake Studios in northern Brittany, producer Robert P. strived for an authentic and original Soul sound with a certain crunchiness and analogue distortion, like that of an old vinyl from the Sixties without falling under the overused retro banner.

The title track of Gemma & The Travellers' debut album "Too Many Rules & Games" is a song about a woman who has had enough of a world run by the men looking only for their own personal glory and fame. Love is the answer to the problems of this world! "Where I lived before" is another highlight: "I am looking back at the years of my upbringing living in the south of Italy, a juxtapose of poverty, injustice and hardship with all the beauty of the land and warmth of the people, it was hard to be a teenager there as my mum would not let me go out, which amplified the rebel in me," Gemma explains.

In 2015, the band played their live debut at London Jazz Cafe, opening for the Craig Charles' "Funk & Soul Show", who then described the band's sound as a "tasty little nugget of Soul".

For a label that wasn't around long, Strata East achieved the same sort of label recognition that Impulse! or Blue Note managed to build. In other words, you knew what you were getting when you bought a record on the label, even if you didn't know the names on the outside of the cover. This is no exception. Who is Shamek Farrah Who knows Who cares It's the music that's important. This is the standard spiritually intense new jazz one learns to expect from the label, soaked in some Eastern influences but always with its ear to the street. Musicians took their roles as leaders and spokesmen very seriously back then. This very adult statement from a group of very serious men is no exception. However, what might be an average, forgettable session is rescued by the propulsive engine of Milton Suggs' bass. He adds the fire and the drive that keeps things interesting and prevents the music from wandering into a circular spiritual morass. For fans of the sound or the label, this can be heartily recommended.

Robert Cray Teams with Steve Jordan and Legendary Memphis Sidemen for New Album.

Robert Cray has been bridging the lines between blues, soul and R&B for the past four decades, with five Grammy wins and over 20 acclaimed albums. For his latest project, Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm, the Blues Hall of Famer traveled to Memphis with his friend, renowned Grammy Award winning producer Steve Jordan, to make a classic soul album with Hi Rhythm, the band that helped create that sound.

Jordan and Cray met in 1987 while working on the concert film Hail! Hail! Rock and Roll, a tribute to Chuck Berry. Steve produced Robert's Grammy winning Take Your Shoes Off in 1999, and a number of other albums, including the exciting 4 Nights of 40 Years Live. He knew of Robert's deep love of O.V. Wright and other Memphis soul legends, and suggested they take up residence at Royal Studios, where Wright, Ann Peebles, Al Green, Syl Johnson, Otis Clay and many others recorded with the venerable producer, songwriter, arranger and engineer, Willie Mitchell. The core of Mitchell's Hi Rhythm band used on many of those landmark sessions was still around, though Mitchell himself had passed in 2010.

Set inside an old theatre, the funky Royal Studios looks much as it did when Al Green was cutting those classics for Hi Records. Guitarist Teenie Hodges has passed away, but his brothers Rev. Charles Hodges (organ and piano) and Leroy "Flick" Hodges (bass), along with cousin Archie "Hubbie" Turner (keyboards), were still there. "It was a soul, rhythm and blues, fantasy camp for us. Those guys have been playing in that room for 50 years," says Jordan.

Robert penned "You Had My Heart" and "The Way We Are," two stunning love songs. Many timeless soul songs were statements in a time of turmoil, and so it is again with Cray's "Just How Low." The album opens with a driving, soulful version of Bill Withers' "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh" that sounds as if it was originally from an old Hi Rhythm recording. Jay-Vee Records knows it's very lucky to have these powerful songs. When Robert chose two Tony Joe White songs for the album, White, a big fan of Cray, came up from Nashville to sit in. First up is the moving ballad "Aspen, Colorado" (the sister song of his "Rainy Night in Georgia"). The other end of the spectrum is the swirling psychedelia of "Don't Steal My Love." The tribute to O.V. Wright and Hi Rhythm is the horn-driven version of "You Must Believe in Yourself." Known for writing "Mustang Sally" and many other songs, Sir Mac Rice's "I Don't Care" follows on the album with an unforgettable hook, and Rice's funky "Honey Bad" features more guitar brilliance from Cray. Moving into early R&B from the 5 Royales, Robert performs "I'm With You Pt. 1" then turns the guitar loose on "I'm With You Pt 2."

Al Massrieen: Disco, Funk and modernized Arabic Pop from Egypt

In the beginning of Habibi Funk, our search was focussed on vinyl records. Around a year ago though, we got to the point where we realized that it became substantially harder to discover music, that we enjoyed and hadn't heard before. It became apparent that it was time to start looking for other formats. Cassette tapes were the obvious alternative. These were introduced in the arabic world around the late 1970s. In some countries they took over a bit earlier, in others a bit later, but eventually they pushed the vinyl format out of the market in the 1980s. In Egypt this trend already even started in the late 1970s.

Al Massrieen was one of the first bands I learned about once I discovered the tape format for myself. They were really popular in Egypt in the 1970s and the more of their music I found on either tapes or Arabic pirate mp3 sites, the more I was becoming a fan. Only very few bands from the region can match the band's versatility as well as their strive for innovation. Hany Shenoda is the man behind the Al Massrieen band. He is a reknown figure of the Egyptian music scene and has worked with everyone from Abdel Halim Hafez to Mohamed Mounir. Al Massrieen was his attempt to introduce his ideas of modernizing Egyptian music, heavily encouraged by Naguib Mahfouz (Egypt's only winner of the Nobel Price for literature) after discussing his ideas with him. Al Massrieen's sound goes from lush disco like "Sah" to psych rock like "Horreya" or incredible jazz fused pop on songs such as "Edba Mn Gded". I was shocked to realize the band seemed to be hardly known outside Egypt, even though I feel they're at least on the same level as Ahmed Fakroun. An relative obscurity which I largely attribute to the fact that their releases never have been pressed on vinyl (apart from a Greece best of LP which wasn't a strong compilation of the group's songs). One way or another it felt like this band and especially their composer, band leader and overall brain Hany Shenoda was in need to get some recognition outside of Egypt. The release is fully licensed from the band and comes with an extensive booklet with liner notes, interviews and unseen photos.

Decompoze, of the group Binary Star, returns with another impactful contribution to hip hop with his second solo album. In this day in age of global instability, this LP is a comforting sound bed of reassurance aptly titled MAINTAIN COMPOSURE.
With Decompoze's penmanship and beat production talents at the forefront, MAINTAIN COMPOSURE also features verses by some highly regarded veteran hip hop MC's, J.U.I.C.E., One Be Lo, RoSpit, the Subterraneous Crew and some new talent to the hip hop world, Sarah Lady Essence' Violette and T-Logic.

Delights label is proud to present its new 7'' release - debut single by the Brighton-based trio MNP. The trio consists of Simon Hill (a.k.a. Beta Hector, bass) and his long-time band-mates: Toby Sendall (Baby Charles, Derriere, guitar) and Robin Mallon (Derriere, drums). Together they create a special kind of cinematic groove music, largely inspired by library and film composers of the 1960's and 70's.

The 7'' is a result of the first collaboration between MNP and the Delights label boss - the Jerusalem-based composer/producer Markey Funk. Markey played additional keys and mixed both tracks, giving them his trademark psychedelic sound.

Recommended for fans of The Natural Yogurt Band/The Sign of Four, Adrian Younge, Portishead, Drumetrics, and the 1960's library and film music.

After providing us with the boogie drenched Tempo Dreams Vol. 2 compilation, LA-based Modern Funk maestro "B. Bravo" is back with a new 7" that's sure to become a staple for the crates.
With that feel good bassline and soulful hook, up-tempo A-side single "I'm For Real"'s infectious keys will get the dancefloor moving, while B-Side track "Stay The Night"'s gets a very rare dubbed out remix from Hawaii's Mr. Carmack taking things to that tropical island vibe. Let the funk take you.

Blackman, multi-keyboard wizard played with the biggest names in fusion music including Lenny White & Twenny-nine'. As a leader and featured recording artist Don's keyboard, vocal and composing talents all came to shine on this debut LP, Blackman' originally released on Arista/GRP in 1982. The album became a sensation on the soul, jazz fusion, funk and rare groove scenes leading to it being constantly in demand since. In the UK Don performs every year at The Jazz Cafe' off the strength of this one album twenty years ago! In 2002 Expansion released his first solo album for Expansion Listen'.
Don toured the world with his band and The Marcus Miller Band', The World Saxophone Quartet', with jazz and bassist Tuero Nakamura.. His work on the acoustic piano and other keyboards was recorded on Mary J. Blidge's, Feel Like A Natural Woman' and Janet Jackson's That's The Way Love Goes' Nard' was sampled by Snoop Doggy Dogg' entitled Hustlers N' G's'.
