DJ Shadow, widely acknowledged as a crucial figure in the development of experimental, instrumental hip-hop, will return with 'The Mountain Will Fall' via Mass Appeal Records, his first full length release since 2011. The 12-track album finds DJ Shadow exploring new realms in addition to the deep samples and kinetic soundscapes that helped to launch his career 20 years ago. On 'The Mountain Will Fall' he's shifted further toward original composition, a vast experimentation of beats and textures, synthesizers and live instruments including horns and woodwinds. Jamie Lidell has announced his first new album in more than three years. On October 14, he'll release Building a Beginning, the follow-up to his self-titled LP. It features DaRu Jones on drums, Pino Pallodino on bass, and multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, along with Kudisan Kai, Traci Brown Bailey, and Tiffany Smith. Justin Stanley and Ben Ash produced. Northern soul boy, crate digger and tastemaker, Keb Darge is a name which needs no introduction to lovers of rare music the world over. His 'Legendary Deep Funk' night at Soho's seminal strip club turned music venue Madame Jojo's introduced obscure dance-floor soul music to an eager London club crowd, sparking a global appetite for raw, visceral funk.Keb's search for rare '45s took him across the globe, obsessively searching dollar bins, private collections and in some cases, artists homes to discover hidden gems recorded by local bands on regional record labels and pressed in tiny quantities. The rarity of the music combined with Keb's exquisite ear and DJ ability meant that these records quickly became highly collectible (not to mention expensive) and even made 'deep funk' a recognized genre all its own. Keb's passion paved the way for the modern funk revival, spearheaded by bands like The New Mastersounds & Quantic, even hitting the pop charts with the likes of Mark Ronson.In 1997 BBE released the first of three compilation albums of 'Legendary Deep Funk ', among the first LPs issued by the label. If you're familiar with Passover, the band's 2006 debut, you'll know that The Black Angels's music alone is enough to invoke spirits. There's a name for the band's sound; they call it `hypno-drone 'n roll'. It's the sound of long nights on peyote, of dreams of a new world order, and of half-invented memories of the seamy side of '60s psychedelia. While the Iraq war is still a major influence on the band's lyrics, there are new forces at work here, including Eugene Zamyatin's dystopian novel We and in Christian Bland's words "psychic information from the past and future." See, The Black Angels really are in contact with ghosts. "Civil War battlefields are prime spots for seeing ghosts," says Bland. "One time at Kennesaw mountain in Georgia, I was climbing the mountain in the middle of June and it must have been close to 100 degrees, but in this one particular spot it was very cold. The hairs on my neck stood up and I knew something strange was happening. Then the wind whispered something like `retreat,' and I did. I later learned that the spot where I was on the battlefield was known as `the dead angle', the place where the fiercest fighting took place. The confederates ended up retreating from the mountain towards Peachtree Creek." The Black Angels formed in Austin, Texas, in 2004, comprising from six people (now five) from very different backgrounds. Singer/vocalist Christian Bland is the son of a Presbyterian Pastor and was raised in a devoutly religious household. Bassist / guitarist Nate Ryan was born on a cult compound and drummer Stephanie Bailey claims she's a descendent of Davy Crocket. She and Alex Maas (vocals/guitar) believe a little girl in a red linen dress haunts the group's home. The band released Passover in 2006 to critical acclaim for both the album and the song "The First Vietnamese War". Most of all, Passover established The Black Angels as a band with brains, balls and a strong message. And this time around, the message is there to read in a 16-page booklet that comes with the album. "Our central theme is that people need to open up their minds and let everything come through, and to learn from past mistakes," says Christian. "Only then will we understand the reality of this world and progress beyond where we are now as humans. We've built upon that theme with Directions to See a Ghost. In this vein, Bluey Maunick celebrated Incognito's 30th birthday on stage at the London INDIGO2 with a thrilling concert in summer 2009. It was a fantastic night: with their blend of soul and jazz, funk and fusion almost 30 musicians, with several surprise guest appearances, electrified the audience. Thanks to the contagious energy and the virtuoso solo numbers, each song became something special. And as if this band hadn't given us enough variety already, the strings of the Millenia Ensemble provided a delightful additional interplay of sound.

This landmarkappearance was primarily aimed at promoting Arista's imminent release of their 1976 LP It's Your World. This monumental performance comprised of only six songs in comparison with the ten of It's Your World, but the energy and spirit of that performance evoked acute political and spiritual awareness, rampaging through global and local injustices with humility and conscience firmly intact. BACK ON THE STREET AGAIN - AUSTRALIAN FUNK, SOUL & PSYCH (MOSTLY) FROM THE FESTIVAL VAULTS is a stunning 20 track CD and 2LP release that highlights a point when the previously disparate styles of rock, jazz and soul all started influencing each other, and exciting new genres were created. To quote the liner notes (by DJ Kinetic):

Australia produced some amazing music during the 60s and 70s that sat outside of the normal rock mould. Avant guard artists like John Sangster pushed boundaries and experimented with the fusion of local and overseas influences, artists like Dalvanius recorded soaring disco music that was lost amongst the popular music of the time, only to be rediscovered by DJs overseas who were searching for unknown sounds, composers like Brute Force and His Drum took risks and recorded left-field funky sounds hidden within their more mainstream compositions, and popular artists like Billy Thorpe occasionally strayed from their A&R directions and took leaves from the books of American artists who were largely unknown in Australia at the time. Claudja Barry's cult "Love for the sake of love" gets Mike Maurro's magic remix treatment for the 7th release on Brookside Records. This is no ordinary edit or reworking though, Mike got his hands on the actual physical master tapes and turned in a refreshed, original mix of this sleazed out downtempo monster. Well known by underground Disco aficionados by it's inclusion on DJ Harvey's earth shattering and legendary "Sarcastic Study Masters" mix CD from 2001 this mid 70's Tom Moulton mixed number came out on Salsoul and caused quite a stir. This new mix really breathes new life into this stone cold classic, Mike utilises lots of alternative takes, vocal vamps and instrumentation from the original sessions giving us a version that's never been heard before! A completely new, original mix. If that doesn't get all you Disco fiends excited then something is seriously wrong!

On the B-side Mike takes Claudia's "Sweet Dynamite" into a new realm too, again using the master tapes to full effect to create a new, refreshed version of one of her more popular jams, A raucous, slamming club cut. Also released in 1976 and mixed again by Tom Moulton, Mike Maurro's version extends everything in just the right way! His rearrangements and remixes are always respectfully executed and it's clear that Mike understands and feels the tracks he works on. Again, another cult Disco cut reworked beautifully for 2016, essential stuff for all lovers of this kind of music, this release is simply unmissable. The record comes in a full colour picture sleeve and these remixes are exclusive to this release and are fully, 100% legit, licensed and sanctioned by all relevant rights holders.

Monologue plays out like a novel, where the Abernathy's expand the perception of family over Ab's expansion of the stripped down Soul/R&B music we're used to hearing. Whether he's playing piano, wurlitzer, synths, guitar, programming drums, live drums, or arranging strings and horn lines, Ab's mastery of musicianship is on full display through Monologue's array of colorful, complex compositions, coupled with his rich, layered vocals. The album opens with him honoring his parents on the whimsical, Parliament-influenced selection Son Of Larry,' followed by the melodic up-tempo Favorite Girl.' On both records, he praises his father and mother and touches on their influence, words of wisdom and bold love. On the groovy Bachelorette,' where we're introduced to Ab's pursuit of his high school love interest, the track gets an assist from long-time collaborators and hip hop heavyweights Phonte and Black Milk. Ab displays his sultry edge on the Prince-inspired soul-pop records I See You' and Pretty Kind,' which showcase his raw and playful vocal lead. Doubt creeps in on the soulful mid-tempo Play It Cool,' where he questions if he should profess his love or take the approach of the track's title. But with the release of his new EP, 'Elixir,' the Brooklyn rapper has never sounded more focused or motivated, and it's only a taste of what's to come from the young artist. His tenacity becomes clear as soon as opener The Root of Sole' hits your ear with its mad-scientist samples and production from J57 (he produced five of the EP's seven tracks). And then in comes Rose to bring it all together, flexing his breathless flow and dizzying wordplay. From there, the BK native continues to rip apart the instrumentals, including the jazzier Break It Down,' featuring Domo Genesis and the more militant Parkside Ave.' More than just a rapper with incredible chops, Rose also reveals pieces of his personality and background on those same tracks. A reggae cover version of "Ring My Bell" b/w "Promise Land Dub", a break beat filled, bassline heavy, head nodder which was sampled heavily on the new Tribe Called Quest LP, warrenting a repress.

Following the release of his limited-edition Boomerang' EP and his cassette-only album Special Request,' Diamond Ortiz brings you his first full-length LP, Loveline.' His heavy, bounce-laden style carries the album from start to finish, cementing him as California's heir apparent to the gutter synth funk sound, which originated from Ohio and found an adopted home out west. It fits perfectly with the cultures of lowriding and popping/locking. Diamond Ortiz proves on Loveline,' as he has with all of his past efforts, that the sound he is a proponent of is not simply retro' or old school' - it has a place in the modern day pantheon of electronic music.
