Ed Scissor's latest album 'Tell Them It's Winter' ruminates over life and love. The LP settles on the
notion that all human beings are on the hunt for the very same thing.
A key player in the UK rap renaissance, renowned live performer, acclaimed wordsmith and expert storyteller, Ed Scissor's development tessellates strongly with his ever-blossoming relationship with Glasgow-based producer Lamplighter. The pair have developed into one of the key partnerships in the alt-rap soundscape ever since their debut 'Better.Luck.Next.Life' was released to critical acclaim back in 2012 (even though they rarely find themselves in the same room as one another).
Fast forward four years and the duo's nu-classical compositions are wiser and more profound than ever before. The camaraderie grows more expansive and ear-opening with every song, striking nods to love songs from the 60's, 80's power ballads, the seedy end of the 90's R'n'B spectrum, to psych-indie anthems, rave anthems, electronica and drone, but moreover, countless nods to moving image, spoken word, soundtracks and scores - the music is rich, expansive and rewarding at every turn.
Scissortongue writes lyrics that extend beyond the realms of reality into a strange left field. It feels like an alternate reality in his head, fuelled by a heady mix of fantasy and reality, umbrella'd under a now customary gothic shroud. 'Tell Them It's Winter' is the next (and quite possibly final) instalment and both Ed Scissor and Lamplighter are super excited for you to hear it.

A bit of funky, jazz, electro-pop, blues, ambient. A full of sounds album, rich in different musical influences, brought together by a common thread: deep house galore for your mind. Formix is a Neapolitan producer and he really rocks with this impressive release. "Run" into many genres, to a multi ethnic world, led by so much creativity and talent. The attractive groove in "Run", the old-fashioned electronic rhythm of "So What", by way of "Slow" and his soul shape. The deep vibe of Sensual Trip feat. Gastek. "Evolution" is the way! A groovalicious track that amazes the listener; a real sensitive club tune. The remix made by GuyDee is the right answer to the original mix, a tasty manner to recreate the same vibes. Not to mention the remix of "Another Journey" Formix feat. Lello Di Franco aka L D F made by The Legendary 1979 Orchestra or the hypnotic pads of the British artist OOFT! Music! "Run" remix. "Just because a records got a groove doesn't mean it's in the groove". "Run" album does both.

First Word are proud to introduce the new EP from our latest signings Darkhouse Family. The production duo consisting of Don Leisure and Metabeats have previously released music through Fat City and Earnest Endeavours, building up a dedicated fanbase that includes Gilles Peterson, Gaslamp Killer and Lefto. The Solid Gold EP is the start of a new chapter for the pair, exploring fresh textures and BPMs within the beats scene.
Metabeats and Don Leisure originally met back in 2008 - DL had produced DnB records under the 'Jamal' moniker (releasing with TOV / Metalheadz and more) and on returning to Cardiff from a spell in London was naturally drawn to 'this Metabeats guy that I kept hearing about'. The Darkhouse Family sound developed over the next few years, merging the territories between hip hop, jungle and DnB, with 2014's Brockwild EP representing the pinnacle of that era. The last few years have seen Metabeats release several acclaimed EPs through Associated Minds(including 2013's 'Caviar Crackle' featuring Action Bronson) as well as building a growing reputation for his house output under the 'Earl Jeffers' name. The duo have also toured the world as DJs, as well as providing sets / mixes for Boiler Room, Gilles Peterson's Worldwide, Solid Steel, Fabric, NTS and Rinse FM.
The Solid Gold EP has seen them add to their musical palate allowing them to draw on influences including Alice Coltrane, Tangerine Dream and Sun-Ra. As Don Leisure explains: 'After the last EP we felt like we needed to change our style to reflect what we were listening to more honestly. We still love Brockwild and those tunes but wanted to do more jazz influenced stuff as that was what were looking for in the record crates and what we were bumping in the studio.' Access to a larger recording space allowed the duo to expand their capabilities, collaborating with other musicians, adding Fender Rhodes, percussion and even harp into the mix. The resulting EP shows a maturity and depth that can only come with time.

"A dub version could be a stone killer", predicted David Hutchison in his 4 star Mojo review of 'You No Fit Touch Am'. And here it is: Afrobeat icon Dele Sosimi's recent album gloriously re-imagined in dub by two production masters, Prince Fatty and Nostalgia 77.
"It was such a rush to have Prince Fatty and Nostalgia 77 work their magic on Dele's album. With Fatty bringing the spirit of 80s On-U Sound, Mikey Dread and Mad Professor, and Ben Nostalgia having mixed Dele's original LP, this was always going to be something very special." Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45s)
'You No Fit Touch Am', Dele Sosimi's first full-length album in almost a decade, was released by Wah Wah 45s in May 2015. It represented where Dele is today - something of an untouchable force in the music scene that he has always been such a vital part of. The album provided a musical representation of Dele's strong socio-political opinions, as well as delivering classic song-writing that could have come straight out of 1970s Lagos.
Born in Hackney, East London, but soon to return to his parents' native Nigeria at the age of four, Dele Sosimi was schooled and raised in Fela Anikulapo Kuti's shadow at the height of early 70s Afrobeat. Having been chosen by Fela to join his band at somewhat of a tender age, he was still a young man when sharing
Fela's Glastonbury stage in 1984, and became both Musical Director for both Fela's Egypt 80 and FemiKuti's Positive Force. After Fela's passing in 1997, Dele went on to concentrate on his own solo career and, with diligent patience, carved out his own Afrobeat crown. In London, where he now resides, his Afrobeat Vibration all-nighters are charged with his passion, labours and his unrelenting spirit.

'Letters To Home' is the brand new album from Jon Phonics. Since last appearing on First Word with his 'White Neckle' EP in 2014, the London-born/Glasgow-based producer has spent the intervening period becoming one of the UK's most versatile contemporary rap producers, as well as enhancing his reputation as a club DJ to be reckoned with (check his riotous Boiler Room set from 2015 for evidence). Alongside this, he's busied himself running the critically acclaimed Astral Black imprint / clubnight, home to some of the country's most exciting talent in Hip-Hop & Grime, releasing music from JD. Reid, Drae Da Skimask, Dressin Red and Jaisu.
On 'Letters To Home', his first full-length since 2010, Phonics further explores what has become his signature brand of deep textured field recordings, sample chops and rolling bass lines. Across 16 tracks - the album, much like his DJ sets, ducks and weaves through moods & BPMs whilst maintaining an obsessive focus that is uniquely his own. With 'Exotic Wall Furnishings' & 'P_O_V' Phonics nods to the sleazy 80s synth-pop influence of his early production sound, whilst the slo-mo trap of 'Nagasaki' & 'Gut Splash' (a collab with Astral Black label mates DJ Milktray & Dressin Red, commissioned by Fact TV) and the club destroying 140bpm Bollywood flip 'Seeta' hint at where this producer's head has been at recently. Elsewhere, the dynamic instrumental Hip Hop of 'Sunshine Emoji' & 'Black Russian' are fine examples of his effortless MPC work.
Though largely instrumental Phonics tastefully peppers the offering with a handful of vocal contributions - High Focus' Dirty Dike rides high on the typically futuristic 'Live From The Hypocrite Fest', whilst Blah Records head honcho & Cult Mountain leader Lee Scott channels Nate Dogg to surprising effect on the lo-slung 'PPLPERSON' (a video for which will be dropping soon courtesty of NTS Radio). Phonics teams up with his UK stalwart M9 for the firs time since his acclaimed 2011 single Strange Fruit on the deceptively melodic 'Cheatin'. Most surprisingly though, Astral Black producer Dressin' Red makes the move from behind the boards to in front of the mic for the first time on record with the twisted synth-pop of 'P_O_V'.

Australian vocalist extraordinaire Kylie Auldist will be no stranger to soul & funk fans, her searing soul singing having featured on her own albums 'Made Of Stone' ,'Still Life' (Tru Thoughts) also in The Bamboos, as well as Freestyle Records own Cookin' On 3 Burners.
Her unmistakable voice is currently topping the pop charts across Europe, as the Kungs remix of Cookin' On 3 Burners 'This Girl' has proven a sure fire hit with club audiences as well as pop fans. It has been playlisted on BBC Radio 1 and Capital FM, and is rising up the UK Top 30 like a bullet!
For her first solo album on Freestyle, Kylie, assisted by long time friends & collaborators Lance Ferguson (The Bamboos/Lanu/CO3B/Black Feeling) and Graeme Pogson (of Aussie electronic duo GL) have honed and perfected a collection of amazing new boogie, disco & electro-funk inspired tracks that evoke the feel and sound of late 70's & early 80's club classics. Think of classic acts like D Train, Sinnamon, and singers like Chaka Khan, Maxine Singelton, Sharon Redd and you will already start to understand where this new project is rooted.
Waste Of Time, a shimmering, soulful and devilishly catchy mid tempo groover. Graeme Pogsons'synthesizer bass lines are so evocative of that era , they act like a musical time machine! This is perfect summer time soul.
Sensational (which has a fantastic video to accompany it) hits a little harder, the beats, bass line and Kylie's vocals will drive you onto the dance-floor and stay there until the very last note and begging for more. Good Time Girl doesn't let the pressure drop for a second and also features a fantastic proto-rap contribution from King Merc - whilst Family Tree is pure Saturday night, feel good disco aimed at the ears and dancing feet.
Look Away takes the tempo down to a mellow mildly introspective place, but the heavy groove still underpins some totally fantastic vocals from Kylie, who surely must now be reconsidered as one of the most soulful singers active today.

On June 17th Bodytonic Music present the fear inducing yet exquisite Mouth To Mouth EP by cult Dublin band Ocho. Distorted bass, grinding rhythm and icy atmospherics give EP opener Vines a dramatic, dark and icy Celtic beauty, all set to the spectral voice of lead singer Stace Gill. Completed by producer /writer DOS and a plethora of talented guest musicians, the band's ambient sound is influenced by an eclectic mix of music from around the world. Ocho released their hauntingly beautiful debut Young Hunting in 2012 and Mouth To Mouth marks a mesmerising return for the intriguing duo and their unique brand of ice-cold, soulful electro, getting support from the likes of Severino, Anthony Naples, Fish Go Deep & more
Disco master Darshan Jesrani (one half of the legendary NY duo Metro Area) reworks Vines into enchanting Balearic sunrise house, presented in both vocal and instrumental incarnations.
Ocho amp up the drama level even more for an engrossing, trance inducing fantasy journey high into stratosphere on Disappearing. The EP closes with the epic, Burial-goes-baroque torch song 'Offshore'.
Bodytonic started life in 2002 as a small club night based in Dublin and has since thrown parties everywhere from Sonar to Berghain, with guests including Carl Craig, Theo Parrish, Laurent Garnier, Horse Meat Disco, Switch & Diplo, Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock and Q-Tip.
In addition to their ongoing club nights and label, Bodytonic run Irish nocturnal institutions Wigwam (formerly the Twisted Pepper venue) and the Bernard Shaw pub, whilst other areas of their rapidly growing empire include festivals, pubs, brewing beer, restaurants, a gallery, apps and websites.
The first release on Bodytonic's labels came in 2007 and they have since put out records featuring Ron Morelli & Svengalisghost (under their Ghost 202 guise), Naum Gabo (AKA Jonnie Wilkes from Optimo), Mr Fingers, JD Twitch and Irish stars Kormac & Tr One.
Bodytonic releases are forthcoming from Adultrock and Hmeflght, with Bodytonic parties at Snowbombing, Dimensions, and Wigwam in Dublin happening in 2016, with events at ADE and beyond in the pipeline.

The soul behind these recordings is Rama Dyushambee. Not only a vocalist, Mr. Dyushambee also plays tenor saxophone too. He even produced, composed and arranged the entire album. The music on here is hard to categorize. The basic feel of the songs is Jazz, but you also find a portion of Funk and lots of spirituality in them too. If you like your Jazz funky - check out this album. If you like your Funk jazzy - check out this album. Generally, if you like music with SOUL then you can't go wrong with Orbit In Space.

I'll be honest, I had forgotten about Samuel Jonathan Johnson until i heard Theo Parrish play it recently. I used to spin the LP years ago but my copy got lost or beat. Soon as I heard it I made a call and sorted out the 45, just an amazing solid Groove on Sweet Love, you cant help but feel it. The flip 'Reasons, is the other great track from the same Columbia LP 'My Music' . First time on 45 for both of these, once they are gone that is it. Disco Essential

At the same time that Neville 'Bunny Wailer' Livingston recorded his debut solo long playing masterpiece, 'Blackheart Man', he was also creating a series of singles for his own Solomonic label. These records were every bit as good, at times even better, but they have never been released outside of Jamaica. Until now...,
It is next to impossible to ever overstate the importance of The Wailers to the history of Jamaican music and, as the last surviving member of the group, Bunny Wailer rightly regards himself as the sole keeper of their history ever mindful of the group's exalted position in the story of reggae music and the importance of their legacy. In 2010 Dub Store were proud to be able to work with Bunny on re-releasing a selection of his earliest recordings for the Solomonic label, lovingly restored and presented in reproduction sleeves and labels, on limited edition seven and twelve inch singles. Now, taking another step forward, we are more than proud to present Bunny's timeless music on two beautifully packaged CD's and double LP's. Bunny's first solo album, 'Blackheart Man' originally released in 1976 on his own Solomonic label in Jamaica and on Island in the UK, is one of the undisputed all time classics of Jamaican music and established Bunny Wailer as a highly respected, world renowned artist in his own right. During this period Bunny also produced a series of singles released in Jamaica and the UK in strictly limited quantities without the benefit of international distribution, that are every bit as good and, in some cases, even better than this awesome debut long player. Original copies have subsequently become highly prized, and highly priced, collector's items. "Classic rarities" is an overused and abused term too often employed to describe average records that failed to sell on their initial release but both 'Tread Along' and 'Rise & Shine' are packed from beginning to end with a searing selection of some of the greatest and hardest to find reggae records ever produced. 'Tread Along' opens, naturally enough, with 'Tread Along' from 1969, one of the last singles for The Wailers' own Wail N Soul M label, and runs through the first release on the Solomonic label, 'Searching For Love' also known as 'Search For I', 'Bide Up' released as 1974 drew to a close, a radical reworking of 'Pass It On' and a marked contrast to the version on The Wailers' 'Burnin'', album, 'Life Line' and the prophetic 'Arabs Oil Weapon' kept the pressure on as Bunny began outlining the flawless 'Blackheart Man' album. Each release was a certified classic in its own right. Peter Tosh's melodica version to Bunny's 'Amagideon' ('Armageddon'), the first track on 'Rise & Shine', is followed by 'Love Fire', an update of another Wail N Soul M track, 'Fire Fire'/'Babylon Burning', through to one of the deepest roots records ever created, 'Rise & Shine', on to 'Riding' from the 'Bunny Wailer Sings The Wailers' sessions (but not featured on the album) and a huge hit in the UK in 1981, and closing with 'Rule Dance Hall' from 1985. No idle boast..., The liner notes feature the story of The Wailers, as told to Dub Store by Bunny himself in Kingston in an enlightening 2012 interview, and rarely seen contemporary photographs complete these essential releases. The music of Bunny Wailer was not only a medium for change and protest but also to elucidate and educate and 'Tread Along' and 'Rise & Shine' finally complete the canon of un-compiled Wailers music. "I'm quite satisfied, you know, reggae music is the kind of music that although sometimes you would look at it and say..., boy, it's hard..., then again you look at what it has done for the people of the world you know that that couldn't be locked up in a little place like Jamaica!" 'Aloha Got Soul' encompasses a vibrant era of contemporary music made in Hawai'i during the 1970s to the mid-1980s as jazz, rock, funk, disco and R&B co-existed alongside Hawaiian folk music. Check!
Hawai'i's identity had undergone huge change: statehood into America in '59 and the Vietnam War were the backdrop as Hawai'i's youth found inspiration in a new wave of international music led initially by The Beatles and Stones and, later, by US R&B bands like Earth Wind & Fire and Tower Of Power. Garage bands flourished during the '60s and, by the '70s, live music was at its peak. W aikiki was filled with clubs: The Point After, Infinity's, Hawaiian Hut, Spats and more.
For the '70s generation of artists, some came through the talent contest 'Home Grown' and its accompanying compilation LP. Singer Nohelani Cypriano won it with her instant radio hit, 'Lihue'. Other winning songs, like Marvin Franklin's soul surfer jam 'Kona Winds', burned more slowly but have endured with DJs today. Many records also packed a powerful message. In 1978, Hawaiian was made the official state language and a huge movement arose to revive hula and traditional music. Steve & Teresa's 'Kaho'olawe Song' longs for an island long gone: the US military had used Kaho'olawe as a bombing range since Pearl Harbor. Nohelani Cypriano sang about the once sleepy town of Kailua, now a popular tourist destination: Kailua needs no high-rise with her blue skies, not for our eyes. Can you realize' Leading Hawaiian artists like Aura, Mike Lundy and keyboardist Kirk Thompson's Lemuria took time in high quality facilities like Broad Recording Studio to make albums. Others grabbed studio time when they could: Tender Leaf's Murray Compoc worked for the city bus by day and recorded an album during night sessions. Other albums were spontaneous. In 1983, Steve Maii & Teresa Bright recorded an acoustic set in just 3 hours after being invited to a studio following a gig. For the artists of the '70s, the climate for music changed rapidly during the mid-'80s as DJ culture grew and live venues shut down. Hawai'i's R&B era shone brightly and relatively briefly but, despite brilliant musicians, regular gigs and LP releases, most of the music barely made it to the mainland. Thanks largely to Aloha Got Soul's Roger Bong, a new interest in this fertile era of Hawaiian music has grown, culminating in this new compilation of overlooked gems. 'Aloha Got Soul' is compiled and annotated by Bong and features rare photos and original artwork.

Eli Paperboy Reed has returned to the studio and crafted a new album that is at once back-to-basics and startlingly current.
Album opener "Hold Out" kicks things off at full-volume, embodying the classic gospel ethos that everything's going to work out fine if you just keep the faith. It's a notion that turns up throughout the record, from the title track "My Way Home" to "Tomorrow's Not Promised" to "Movin'," and it reflects Reed's resilient spirit in the face of disappointment.
Elsewhere on the album, he nods to the music's church roots, singing of fear of the devil on "The Strangest Thing" and damnation on "Cut Ya Down" (the only non-original on the record and a song he learned performing with Boston's Silver Leaf Gospel Singers, founded in 1945). "What Have We Done" is something of a secular hymn for the environment, and "I'd Rather Be Alone" serves as a meditation on following your own path to salvation.
