KSLP053[13,40 €]

The Jamaican Reggae duo Dave and Ansell Collins hit big time in 1970 when they topped the UK Charts with one of the all time classic reggae singles 'Double Barrel'.
It also became one of the first Reggae hits in the USA.
The distinctive chant of singer Dave Barker calling out the intro to songs letting the listener know what about to hit them is timeless.
He also carries a great soul voice that has added magic to many a great reggae tune.
Dave and Ansell are two talented artists that on their own have added so much to the reggae sounds we know and love.
But together they have made a name that will go down in history as one of the great duo's that came out of Jamaica and onto the world's stage.
We have compiled a set of songs that show the wide ranging talents of Dave Barker and Ansell Collins..

The Bombay Royale - The Island Of Dr Electrico

Melbourne-based, world-conquering originators of vintage Bollywood-inspired surf, spy, disco and funk, The Bombay Royale, make an exhilarating return with their second album, The Island of Dr Electrico (out July 7). From their unlikely beginnings in the suburban wilds of Melbourne, The Bombay Royale have taken their unique sound to audiences throughout Europe, UK and the USA, where their performances have been met with astonishment and critical acclaim.

The Bombay Royale's debut album You Me Bullets Love (HopeStreet Recordings, 2012) catapulted the 11-piece band (fronted by singers Parvyn Kaur Singh and Shourov Bhattacharya, and led by musical director Andy Williamson) on to the world stage. Featuring eight dazzling originals and two fascinating re-workings of long-forgotten Bollywood production numbers, You Me Bullets Love demonstrated the band's evolution from interpreters of 1960s and 1970s Bollywood soundtracks, to creators of a new and completely original music which synthesises Indian classical and folk music with Western styles such as surf, rock and disco. The album won universal critical acclaim, a place in iTunes Best of 2012, and #1 on the iTunes World Music charts. The last 12 months have seen the band debut their sound to international audiences, with tours of the US (Kennedy Centre, Global Fest), UK (Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Cambridge Folk Festival and WOMAD) and Europe (Fusion Festival - Germany and Sommarscen Festival - Sweden).

The Bombay Royale have provided a tantalising first glimpse at The Island of Dr Electrico by unveiled a bold new video for lead single Henna Henna. A sweeping, exhilarating romp sung in Bengali with raunchy wild-west flourishes, Henna Henna comes with a "high concept" (pun intended) film clip, directed by Kess Broekman-Dattner (The Bamboos, Hermitude, Clare Bowditch). The mischievous video depicts The Mysterious Lady and her crack team's efforts to rid the dastardly Skipper of the key to his secret lair and rescue the Tiger, and other hijinks on a private jet somewhere above the Pacific Ocean. Henna Henna is out now on iTunes and available as an instant download, along with a bonus track, Wild Stallion Mountain, with album pre-orders.

Judah Eskender Tafari / Ticklah - Land Of Confusion (ticklah Remix) / Dub Of Confusion (dub)

Helmed by world-renowned drum & bass and reggae DJ Liondub, the Liondub Internatonal imprint has made massive strides since
it's inception. Releasing a steady stream of top-shelf material from a growing stable of producers and vocalists, it has become a go-
to source for emerging, top-notch music at the nexus of reggae, dubstep and drum & bass sounds. Last year saw the christening of
the Liondub45 sub label, which specializes in collectible, deep, vintage dub and scorching Roots Reggae 7's and showcases the
talents of a veritable who's who of modern Dub producers and original foundation vocalists.
Sugar Minott is a hard act to follow, but there could be none better than Judah Eskender Tafari. Coming up at the height of roots
reggae music, Judah first performed as a musician at 12 Tribes shows in Jamaica and later recorded his first big releases at Studio 1.
Beginning with "Jah Light", he went on to record other hit songs like "Rastafari Tell You", "Always Trying" and "Just Another Day".
These tracks and many more have gained him international notoriety in the past 30 years and lead up to his work with Ras Kush's
Black Redemption label. In all of his music Ras Kush delivers a positive message of Faith, Hope and Charity.
NYC based keyboardist, engineer, and producer Victor Axelrod, aka Ticklah, has been a continual and integral part of the NYC music
scene for over a decade. He is a founding member of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Antibalas and the Easy Star All-Stars with
whom he continues to record and perform. In the past several years he has recorded keys for Mark Ronson, D'Angelo, Estelle, MIA as
well as the Amy Winehouse. In addition to Liondub45 he has released his own work on the NYC reggae label Easy Star. Wether its a
dubbed-out Sharon Jones remix or an original groove built form the ground up, Ticklah's tracks are always captivating and rich with
sonic detail.
Originally released as the b-side to "Life" on Black Redemption, Land Of Confusion was voiced at Ticklah's studio and released in
2007. Three years later, Ticklah has arranged a new instrumental track around the vocal, adding his own signature out-board effects,
percussion and keyboard harmonies to the conscious lyrics of the "Commander". The resulting track and version are a musical gem;
melding the dub experimentation of Creation Steppers with the inimitable spirit of Studio 1 and Soul Syndicate. It's no surprise then
that Jah Shaka has offered steady support for this track on his soundsystem time and time again! Three years in the making and well
worth the wait, Land of Confusion is a must have for all fans of dub reggae and roots music worldwide.

Hot & Rich With Lynn Taitt & The Jets/beverleyÿs All Stars. - Rocksteady

* Hot & Rich-Rocksteady was first released in 2004 on 10'LP & CD. The album hasn't been available on vinyl since 2006. The album is now re-released in a revised format, both on LP & CD. The revised vinyl release features many different tracks from the original and all tracks have been revised and re-mixed. Hot & Rich play Sax & Harmonica led instrumentals on original Jamaican recorded 1960's Rock Steady & early Reggae rhythms.

Hot & Rich are Bob "Hot Dog" Ormrod and his son, Richard Ormrod. With over 50 years of musical experience between them, they play everything, from Traditional to Free Jazz, Blues, Ska, Reggae, Latin, Calypso, Mento & South African music. Their musical empathy, formed over 15 years of playing with now defunct bands, Skaville Train, Ska Bop and others, enables them to go into the studio, with little or no prior scores or arrangements, and play track after track of innovative and passionate music.

The featured instrumentals were recorded over a two day session in December, 2003 and at a later session in 2004, at the Bijou Studio, Taunton, Somerset, GB. Hot & Rich played Alto, Tenor, Soprano & Baritone saxes, Clarinets, Bass Clarinet & Harmonica. The overall track style ranges from loose style, free-blowing Jazz influenced incarnations, on Sax and Harmonica, to more precisely orchestrated tracks. All instrument parts are played over original Jamaican recorded 1967/68 Rock Steady and early Reggae rhythms and all rhythms were supplied through the courtesy of Derrick Morgan O.D. All tracks have been re-mixed and re-mastered by Alien Dread & Top Beat, Summer 2014, at the recently fully refurbished A.D.studio, Nr. Exeter, GB.

Sluggy Ranks, Ticklah, Rob Symeonn - Nah Bow Down

Returning to ignite a busy fall season for 2013, LionDub45 kicks things off with another double-sided plate featuring the production
talents of New York's Ticklah with vocals from Sluggy Ranks and Rob Symeonn. As a frequent contributor to the label, Victor
Axelrod's Ticklah project should be familiar to all of our fans, and his consistently outstanding productions garner our enthusiastic
support. The place of honor on the A-side goes to Sluggy Ranks (RIP), the recently departed vocalist from Kingston whose tragic
death last year in a car crash has done nothing to diminish his legacy in the New York dancehall scene. A foundation artist in the busy
NYC reggae clubs of the '80s and '90s, he recorded many classic sides for Park Heights, Jah Life, Wild Apache, Shelly's, Digital
English, and many other imprints. Here, Alexrod's tough, minimalist riddim of hard drums, digi-horns, and space age synthesizer
provides muscular backing to Sluggy's chant of defiance against the false idols of the modern age. On the flip, LionDub45 is proud to
reissue one of Ticklah's strongest classic dub productions from over a decade ago. Vocal credit is given to frequent Axelrod
collaborator Rob Symeonn, but the bulk of the side is an instrumental dub that bubbles and burns in a style reminiscent of Scientist
with psychedelia left intact. As a tribute to a lost legend and a valuable press of a lost NYC dub classic, Liondub45 again places our
feet firmly in New York and Kingston for it's fifth 7" release.

The Excelsiors - Control This (gatefold)
  • A1: Mrs Magic
  • A2: It's Too Late
  • A3: Lookout Weekend
  • B1: Here I Come (Broader Than Broadway)
  • B2: In The Name Of The Father
  • B3: People Make The World Go Round
  • C1: A Land Far Away (Satta Massagana)
  • C2: This Is Sunshine Music
  • C3: Mirror In The Bathroom
  • D1: Cold As Steel
  • D2: Soon I Will Be Done
  • D3: Ashes to Ashes

Sounding quite like nothing you have heard before, The Excelsiors come correct with their debut album, Control This. The latest project from Shane 'Sureshot' Hunt, known for his Sharpshooters group, and for his highly-regarded Soundbwoy Reggae Breaks series wherein he has liberally dropped science, sharing his in-depth knowledge of ska, rock-steady, reggae and dancehall for the instruction of the hip-hop massive, The Excelsiors is the logical extension of Shane's passion for classic Jamaican music (and more) of the '60s through '80s. At a time when seemingly everything is made using the same software packages, Control
This is a defiantly old-school, analogue record, dispensing with the uniform polish and sheen of contemporary production methods and instead showcasing an array of 'real' instruments and a variety of styles and moods. In the mix are not just bass, drums and guitars and some real antique keyboard sounds but percussion including steel pans, organ, horns, backing vocals, and even strings! All new music, cut live to tape and then seamlessly pieced together across an album of (mostly) cover versions, a living link with the music that was the inspiration for the project. Sounding like something that would be very expensive to produce in this day
and age, the finished result nevertheless retains a rawness and gusto that virtually leaps out of the speakers. Nor is this simply a reggae album -in fact, here we have Sureshot bringing together a whole array of cultural influences, in a lively mash-up style. Vocals come from northern soul/disco legend The Mighty Pope and Omega Rae of Blackalicious, coming from opposite ends of about four decades of black music styles. Mrs. Magic is the Grover Washington Jr. jazz-funk staplegiven a gender re-assignment, and an earthy reggae treatment: Esther Philips, Roberta Flack and even Amy Winehouse have previously recorded vocal versions atop this killer rhythm, this is how it might've sounded if Toots and The Maytals had done it at the time it came out, raucous and intense. Carole King's It's Too Late has been covered notably by Dennis Brown in reggae and the Isley Brothers in soul. It's given a reggae groove but its strings and deep backing vocals bring to mind classic '70s soul. It takes a particularly fertile imagination (and an extensive record collection) to think of versioning Debbie Deb's freestyle classic Look Out Weekend as a sprawling, organic Afrobeat tune... Shane Hunt is clearly the man with that imagination! Check the fierce horns here. Similarly, Barrington Levy's Here I Come, the digital-dancehall tune to end them all, is here reimagined as a hugely infectious 'live' jam ...try listening to this without breaking into a grin, it's so 'wrong' and yet so right! Thom Bell and Linda Creed's People Make The World Go Round has been covered countless times since its original Stylistics version, and seems to have more resonance than most of the classic Philly era with contemporary listeners. The Excelsiors' version might not even be the first version to use steel pans, but it definitely is the first to combine such instrumentation with a vaguely psychedelelic, eastern drone. Essential version! The version of Gene Rondo's A Land Far Away acknowledges its debt to the greatest of all reggae anthems, the Abyssinians' Satta Massagana ... while This Is Sunshine Music is a funky-soul version of This Is Reggae Music by the under-rated Zap-Pow. The optimism and yearning of the former is tempered with dark psychedelic elements making it stand out dramatically from other versions. The great era of conscious roots reggae is brought back to life with a bang with these unexpected covers. The script is flipped with a cover of The Beat's Mirror In The Bathroom, a classic from the twotone era, given a digital rhythm. Two-tone marked the definitive arrival of a new multicultural generation as a distinctively British creative force... a splash still rippling to this day, with projects like The Excelsiors. As well as Shane's version of a traditional spiritual, named here Soon I Will Be Done, he also shows his own songwriting prowess with a couple of originals, In The Name Of The Father and Cold As Steel, demonstrating influences from gutbucket funk to island music. This is an accomplished work, essentially the creative inspiration of one man, with some very talented musicians on board, and with its phenomenal 'live' sound definitely marks this producer out as an artist to watch in his own right.

For Fans of Charles Bradley, Yesking, Daptones, Bill Withers

Adam Prescott Meets Charlie P - Lazy Man / Stand Firm

Now on the seventeenth release of forward thinking UK Reggae & Dub music, Reggae Roast are going from strength to strength with many underground hits under their belt already in 2013. This release definitely follows suit, having already done the rounds on dubplate for many months and set alight dances all over the world. They've signed up one of the top up and coming UK producers, Adam Prescott, and one of the top mic men on the scene, Charlie P. On remix duty they've drawn for the vanguard of dub, Iration Steppas, and digikal stalwart, Tradesman. With this double A-side release Reggae Roast have lined up two heavy hitting bubblers built to test any soundsystem. 'Lazy Man' is a contemporary steppas reimagining of the stone cold classic 'My Conversation' by the late, great Slim Smith which is accentuated by Charlie P's take on the advantages of being Lazy in modern day Britain. 'Stand Firm' on the flipside is a slice of ruff & tuff Rootstep with conscious lyrics from Charlie P alongside weighty bass assault and a hard rhythm section from Adam Prescott it's a stark contrast to 'Lazy Man'. Straight outta Nottingham, Adam Prescott has been mashing up dances for many years now combining a crucial selection of dubplates and his own varied productions, which are always steeped in Roots music and Soundsystem culture. Having remixed some of the biggest names in Reggae & Dub such as Mungo's Hi-Fi, Iration Steppas, Part2Style, Alpha Steppa, Radikal Guru, Vibration Lab and many, many more over the course of his career he has been finally let loose on a Reggae Roast extended player. Charlie P hardly needs any introduction, however if you have been living under a rock for the past few years he has worked with pretty much everyone worth their salt within the modern day Dub circuit, such as Mungo's Hi-Fi, Dubateers, Solo Banton, Part2Style to name but a few. Constantly touring the world and smashing Dancehalls on a regular basis Charlie shows no sign of slowing down, add to that he has just finished his second LP produced by none other than Scotland's finest, Mungo's Hi-Fi. In the Soundsystem game for over 20 years Mark Millington, one half of Iration Steppas (with Dennis Rootical), has been instrumental in the massive resurgence of Dub music over the past few years. Having set up the legendary Subdub sessions (alongside Outlook Festival's Simon Scott) to showcase the mighty Iration Steppas Soundsystem, Mark is one of the most in-demand selectors on the scene. As a supporter of Adam's work Mark has been playing his 'Year 3000 Dub' of 'Lazy Man' at nuff sessions across the world to sell out audiences. With another busy year planned hot off the back of their new LP 'Iration Steppas Meets Tena Stelin in the Dub Arena' Mark and the rest of the crew deserve their place at the top of the Soundsystem league.

Hailing from Leeds, Tradesman has been exposed to a hot bed of musical activity, more importantly Soundsystem culture, for a number of years. He is a resident at one of Subdub's more underground offshoots, Dancehall Science, and regularly supports some of the most exciting artists in Dub music today playing sets where the majority of the tunes are his own productions. This has, in turn, led to Scotch Bonnet (Mungo's Hi-Fi imprint) snapping up his debut release with Parly B, 'Inna Competition' which gained support from some of the scene's top players and took Tradesman's ruffneck digital sound international. Reggae Roast is building a formidable catalogue featuring some of the most exciting artists in the UK and beyond. Key players in the resurgence of the UK Roots scene over the past 5 years, they are a leading light in the new generation of dub music. Setting them apart from the crowd is their ruff n tuff remixes giving the label a unique cross over appeal. Look out for plenty more releases in the coming months from the likes of Dubmatix, Vibration Lab, Ed West, Parly B and many more.

Professor Skank - Digital Revolution

Professor Skank is by far the most well known Greek Dub producer with a number of great releases and collaborations. Born and raised in the Cretan Agios Nikolaos, he experimented with the genre at a really young age on a 4-track recorder in early 90's. A period of blending and maturing followed that lead to his days with Soul Fire and then the great days came. Meeting Mad Professor was a turning point for him. His talent was discovered immediately and he succeeded not only to shine through but also being initiated into the dub 's secrets from such a living legend. In the following years their collaboration allowed Professor Skank to use the legendary Ariwa studios remixing and working with great artists and bands of reggae and dub like Max Romeo, Zion Train, Aswad, Love Grocer, Afrikan Simba and many other. In 2006, his first solo album 'Industrial Democracy' was released through Universal music. Based in his studio, he kept on producing music, releasing it on international labels and presenting it all around the world and building an international career which lead to him being the first Greek musician to ever appear in Glastonbury Festival, Great Britain 's most famous music festival. In early 2014 Professor Skank starts a new collaboration, this time with Pale Sound Records and releases his second solo album 'Digital Revolution'. A project that starts with the best portents since Mad Professor is not just a mentor here but opens the album with his voice talking about Professor Skank 's ecumenical music. His bet with himself was to bring together two different cultures, the Cretan musical tradition and the Jamaican reggae / dub one.

Ezra - Dub To Me

Dub To Me

12inchNMR022
NoMad Records
26.06.2012

Dub To Me is a record with powerful dub roots, recorded with the collaboration of Ferdinando Masi (Casino Royale, Blue Beaters) and Cato Senatore (Africa Unite, Blue Beaters), certainly two of the best Italian reggae musicians. Ezra takes cue from the genre masters (King Tubby, Lee Scratch Perry, Mad Professor, Tappa Zukie, Prince Far I) to create an ideal soundtrack for a hypothetic interstellar voyage. Electronics mix with acoustic instruments and recording studio experimentation. Piano strings played with hands, percussions and noises mix with synthesizers and a massive use of effects. Broken rhythms and constantly evolving structures push Dub To Me away from the classic canons of the genre making it always original and brave. The friendship with Howie B whom Ezra met during the recording of Reale with Casino Royale, has lead to the remix of the piece titled Hypercompact Stellar System.

The Hempolics - Green Line / News Readers 7"

The Hempolics are out to put those organic rootsy vibes back into electronic music
and bring something altogether different to the table, Green Line is just the
beginning...
Some of you will recognize Green Line as a song originally voiced by the late, great
Garnett Silk over Jackie Mittoo's Hot Milk riddim. Here Grippa Laybourne has kept
the classic rhythm to the fore, with echo and rewinds all punctuating the vocal
delivered by members Nubiya (also of Leeds-London Afrobeat/hip-hop pioneers
Nubiyan Twist) and Dandelion (frontman of mercurial UK-reggae outfit
The Drop), complete with a toasting interlude. The sensibility, right from its opening
Barrington Levy-esque 'bongo-didddly-ooooooaahh', is early digital dancehall, but
as you'd expect from Grippa, well-known for his work with Cheeky Records, it also
has an effortless commercial sheen.
Overly capable B-side News Readers is no sideshow. Kicking straight in with 'News
flash, there ain't no cash, s'all gone on the wall', it is a poignant statement of
disaffection with the negative buzz created by modern media or the 'blues feeders'
as it's better put by the song. Featuring the smooth and ear-pleasing soul Sony
signed and extended Hempolics crew LSK (AKA Leigh Steven Kenny) who also
provides artwork for the upcoming album. Produced with Grippa's own unique
rhythm, this is an unashamedly a bouncy, upbeat number whose positive step
belies the scathing political commentary within. Another summer banger.
Grippa, Harry Collier, Nubiya and Dandelion formed the band in 2010 and Caused
an instant stir with their single Serious on the Reggae Roast label but the band now
rolls out as an 9-piece at full strength, with ranks often swelled by visits from various
international talents such as Maxi Jazz and Paulo Nutini to name a few. They have
gained a cult following through their tight as a tick live performances - honed
supporting Faithless' final ever show in front of 4000 people at Brixton academy as
well numerous small but necessarily on point venues - is the best kept secret on the
UK's live circuit today and it's slowly getting let out of the bag.
There is a full album of material ready to drop, all recorded in back to basics fashion
throughout the bedrooms and home studios of the band; although the weather out
might be dull London-side it's strictly sunshine vibes, resplendent with huge hooks
and festival-friendly choruses. In the mean time Green Line looks set to appeal to
both older reggae-heads and those younger fans who've adopted hip-hop and
dancehall as just another part of the pop firmament, with its massive crossover
appeal and slightly wistful but feel-good charm.
This is the first release for Hempolics on BBE and is part of the slow build to their
album release

The Grinders - Under Arrest

The Grinders Diversify On Sophomore Album "Under Arrest"

by Patrick A. Brown

Following the 2013 album "U-Brown Meets The Grinders - Lets Keep Jammin" feat. Ranking Joe, The Grinders and Down The Bush Records have turned their modern day Reggae rub-a-dub offering up a notch, with a more diversified follow up album titled "Under Arrest" .

The Grinders along with their label Down The Bush Records who hails from France, have sought the vocals of the Original 70" Pionner Dj Ranking Joe, Lady Ann the First lady DanceHall, Sizzla Kalonji the man of a million rhythms, the talented London-based Dancehall Mc Tippa Irie, the heavenly and mystical Abajonai, long time collaborator singer drummer Squidly Cole, Tabby Diamond the mighty Diamonds lead vocal and U-Brown to create what they consider to be a very special "vocal blend" for this project. From the veteran fire branded roots artist Sizzla Kalonji vibing and echoing over pulsating, yet soothing dub melodies in "Can't Sit Down", to the young and emerging Abajonai offering words of encouragement in a more bouncy "Life Goes On", is proof The Grinders intend to bridge musical generation gaps with their modern rub-a-dub music.

Producers U-Man and Chalice Cooper who are earlier known for collaborating with jamaicans like Ranking Joe, U-Brown or Sizzla with "folk riddims" by U-Man are the Original founding members of The Grinders. The duo takes an "anything goes" approach to creating music hence their productions canscarcely be described as any definite genre. By melting 70's & 80's influenced reggae from dub thru dancehall to hip hop and free range floaty sounds they have managed to create these classic rub-a-dub tones.

The Quasi Dub Development - Little Twister Vs. Stiff Neck

The friendly, handmade - Quasi Dub' is at the same time experimental and accessible. The Quasi Dub Development (QDD) wurde vor vier Jahren von Luca Fadda und F.S. Blumm gegründet. Nach - Limousine To The Guillotine' (2011) erscheint hier ihr brillantes zweites Album.

Filter Dread - Midi Space

* RAMP welcome Birmingham-based Filter Dread into their warm bosom. Let's hand you over to the man himself for introductions:
* "In 2000, I started going to raves in Cambridge, and my dad got me a copy of cubasis. After a steady diet of ambient dub and drum and bass I moved to London and discovered Pirate Radio. I completely immersed myself in the music making process and dedicated my time to a sound that I was consistently happy with. A lot of my inspiration comes from early rave production and the quick and unapologetic techniques that were used to make tracks. Short sampling space, limited save functions and other restrictions lead to music that I find to be very pure, energetic and creative."
* With a digital-only single on Visionist's Lost Codes, and the FACT-championed 'Space Loops' cassette under his belt, RAMP would like you to acquaint your with the kaleidoscopic Grime of the 'MIDI Space' EP.
