Cero39 - Montate En El Viaje

Cero39

Montate En El Viaje

CDCR0182
20.05.2013

The debut album "Móntate en el Viaje" is in the pipeline: future sound from Colombia! An explosive sound cocktail Fredo himself calls 'psychedelic electrotropidub'. As the album's title ("Join the trip") promises, CERO 39 sends us on a voyage between time and space and into various sound spheres. Fredo's three special ingredients are dub, electronica and tropical sounds, especially in the form of cumbia. The styles are perfectly combined on the album.

It all began in 2007. The musician, DJ and producer Mauricio Alvarez alias 'Fredo' from Medellín packs his things for a long journey to the north of Colombia. His destination: Barranquilla, the largest port of the country's Caribbean coast. The region surrounding the Rio Madalena is a cradle of cumbia. He carries with him his production gear: computer, synthesizer, effect devices and recording equipment. There he meets countless musicians and singers from the region, among them many of the unforgettable cumbia and vallenato legends from the 60's and 70's. After one year of innumerable recording sessions, inspiring encounters and impressions, he returns to Medellín. His creativity knows no more boundaries. He becomes a sought-after arranger and remixer in the field of cumbia digital, and his mixes of Bomba Estereo, Cumbia Cosmonauts, Matia Bazar and the ZZK artists Tremor and El Remolon are celebrated in the world-wide future bass scene. His first EP 'Volador' was released in 2011 on the small Chilean label KONN Records. The unique productions receive increasing attention. Before Fredo can concentrate on bringing his album to completion, he is receiving invitations to international festivals such as 'Congreso Iberoamericano de Cultura' (Medellín), 'My World images' DNK (Denmark), 'festival Cervantino' (Mexico) and 'Latin Alternative Music Conference' LAMC (New York), as well as clubs in Washington and Miami, with the project CERO 39. Now finally, the debut album 'Móntate en el Viaje' is in the pipeline: future sound from Colombia! An explosive sound cocktail Fredo himself calls 'psychedelic electrotropidub'. As the album's title ("Join the trip") promises, CERO 39 send us on a voyage between time and space and into various sound spheres. Fredo's three special ingredients are dub, electronica and tropical sounds, especially in the form of cumbia. The styles are perfectly combined on the album. While the album opener 'Me encontré con Nicomedes en Paris' and the songs 'Morenita' and 'Junto al mar' are characterized by dubby basslines, delays and downbeats, 'Oie tú', 'Estate Cumbia' and 'Camila', with their moombahton and cumbia digital accents, are great tracks for the dancefloor. The voice of young singer Alexandra Arciniegas stands out in the songs 'Bye Bye' and 'Vamos'. Her style of singing mixed with the effects is reminiscent of early M.I.A. recordings. The single 'Bye Bye' will be released 26th of April 2013 in all online stores such as iTunes, Amazon and Juno Records along with 5 remixes by moombahton master DJ Sabo, New York's beat surfer Thornato, Copia Doble Matador Copyflex from Copenhagen, the the Cumbia Cosmonauts and dub artists liquid Rockz from Hamburg. Album with heavy 13 tracks will be released 20th of Mai.

Malphino - El Lava De Gabacho

Initiated by DJ & visual artist Yu Sato (Lex Records), the devilish Malphino have been spreading their raw, earthy blend of Cumbia, Forró, Samba and cinematic Exotica throughout London since 2010.
This is their first 'studio' effort - recorded live at Catapulte's basement on a 2-track tape machine - featuring 3 original instrumentals and 3 beautifully sung vocal tracks (including José Barros's classic 'Navidad Negra').
While Alex Barrow's accordion and Graham Mushnik's organ deliver their merciless riffs, the rhythm section - percussion, acoustic guitar and a mad tuba - keeps the groove going. Rather than opting for the trendy psychedelic sounds of echoey guitars and synths, Malphino went for a more primitive approach with clear influences from early jazz, 50's mambo and film soundtracks (live, they often cover Nino Rota and Piero Piccioni). A catchy, soulful and butt-shaking 10' vinyl that will keep your hips busy 'hasta Lunes'!

Niney The Observer - Dubbing With The Observer

Niney the Observer's first dub album 'Dubbing With The Observer' was cut at King Tubby's Studio with Tubby himself reworking Niney's rhythms and adding his magic as only he could do. Niney The Observer (b. Winston Holness, 1951 Montego Bay, Jamaica) by the early 70's had forged a successful working partnership with singer Dennis Brown cutting some of his best songs adding a more rootsy element to the
singers sound. Songs like 'Westbound Train', 'No More Will I Roam', 'I Am the Conqueror' to name but a few. Also cutting a hit for Ken Boothe 'Silver Words' and two other singers that Niney had grown up with, Max Romeo 'That Was Love' and Delroy Wilson 'Halfway Up The Stairs'. It was these tracks and a few other Dennis Brown worked rhythms, that Niney took to King Tubby's studio at 18 Drumilly Avenue, Kingston 11, with the intention to let Tubby remix and enhance the rhythms Tubby Style. The result was to be Niney's first Dub album the mighty 'Dubbing with the Observer'. On completion it was sent to London and it was then released on Trojan records and named Dub album of the Year. We are proud to put that album back out there for all to hear, what has now become a dub classic.

Dieuf-dieul De Thies - Aw Sa Yone Vol.1

Dieuf-Dieul De Thies

Aw Sa Yone Vol.1

12inchTBLP017
22.04.2013

TERANGA BEAT proudly presents DIEUF-DIEUL de THIÈS in their first ever edition. Three singers ASSANE CAMARA, BASSIROU SARR and GORA MBAYE together with their chef d'orchestre and guitar player PAPE SECK (an ex-member of GUELEWAR) compose traditional rhythms from all the regions of Senegal, with fuzz guitars, horn sections and hallucinatory percussion. The result is an explosive mixture of an Electric Psychedelic sound with the wisdom and superiority of the musical traditions of the region, a crossover of AFRO-MANDING and AFRO-JAZZ, in which each singer guides the 13-member band in a different direction.
Even today this 32 year old recording sounds futuristic and it is really rather weird that DIEUF-DIEUL never had the chance to release an actual album. Aw Sa Yone Vol.1 includes the biggest part of their second recording and the double LP comes in a special edition with a Silkscreen print cover with a large poster & included in the CD booklet photos and liner notes outlining the group member's careers. There was no other group in Senegal with such a variety of cultural background and a strong identity. Senegalese music at its BEST! We hope you will enjoy.

Lee Perry - At Wirl Records

Lee Perry's time at WIRL Records, later to be renamed Dynamic Sounds Studios, was a very productive time
in his career. A run of great singles and the shaping of a new sound, the beginning of what we know today as
Reggae .
Lee Perry (b. Rainford Hugh Perry, 28 March 1936, Hanover,Jamaica) began his entry into the music business at
the age of 16.Moving up to Kingston Town and working around various Sound Systems, before finding
employment at Coxonne Dodd's Studio One set up, in the late 50's early 1960's. Perry started out as a record
scout, organising sessions and supervising auditions at Dodd's record shop on Orange Street. Helping to make
hits for Delroy Wilson ( 'Joe Liges','Spit In The Sky') and the Maytals, which would lead to his own vocal records
released through Studio One.The musical backing for which, came from legendary Studio One house band The
Skatalites. Another important relationship for Perry, his first recordings with Bob Marley came in the form of
the Wailers, also providing backing, alongside the Soulettes who featured Rita Marley. Cutting such tunes as
'Chicken Scratch' around 1965/1966. This tune was also to provide him with one of his future nicknames
'Scratch'. A dispute over credits and money saw Perry leave Studio One and work with various producers
including Clancy Eccles and J. J. Johnson, before arriving at the door of producer Joe Gibbs in 1967. Here he
would write songs and produce hits for artists such as, Errol Dunkley and the Pioneers. A tune cut during his
time with Gibbs, voiced a snipe at fellow employee Dodd, a trademark that would become an outlet for his
frustrations in the business. This particular tune 'The Upsetter' would also provide another moniker and a name
for his label 'Upsetter'. Again lack of musical credit and financial reward saw Perry move on this time to WIRL
(West Indies Records Limited) Records, working alongside manager Clifford Rae, who would provide studio
time and pay for pressings in return for helping to promote and distribute WIRL product, which Perry would
carry out on his trusted Honda 50 motorcycle around Kingston town.
This period at WIRL saw some inspired work from Perry. 'Run For Cover' was another musical blow to a
previous employer, Coxonne Dodd and featured the Sensations on backing vocals and Lynn Taitt's guitar
picking skills. 'People Funny Boy' was a massive hit for Perry going on to sell over 60,000 copies. Joe Gibbs
would be at the end of this musical attack. Perry had felt Joe Gibbs had turned his back on him, after he had
provided hits for groups like, The Pioneers amongst others. The song would be one of the first records to
feature a New Beat (Reggae) inspired by the sounds coming out of a Pocomania Church, Perry had heard one
night. The congregation inside, wailed in a more slower way than the current musical style of the time Ska!. Perry
worked up this new style with Clancy Eccles, who would come under attack himself in 'You Crummy'. Their
closeness, which as detailed in that song would find them, 'Even shared the same Gal' but 'Now it's plain to see we
reached the end'. 'Set Them Free' was an answer record to Prince Buster's 'Judge Dread' (which had
featured Perry on it) a plea to the Judges in Jamaica that handed out extremely harsh sentences to the young
offenders of the time. The track was cut on the same rhythm as 'Run For Cover' . 'Django Shoots First'
inspired by the Spaghetti Western film of the same name, features Sir Lord Comic. One of the early DJ's who
used a jive talking style over rhythms. 'Night Doctor' was a hit instrumental that featured the organ talents
of Ansel Collins, that really push the tune along. 'Something You Got' was a cover of an USA R& B track by
Chris Kenner and 'Wind Up Girl' was cut at the same session. 'Water Pump' was a rude style track that
was cut later and originally released in 1974.As was 'People Sokup Boy' a later version of 'People Funny Boy'.
'Labrish' which means idol talk and gossip, was one of the first great talk over tunes that features Lee Perry
and producer Bunny 'Striker' Lee talking about the Political situation in Jamaica at the time and their own
financial situation and stories of various comrades. The track was originally released in 1973.
Bunny Lee would play a major part in lee Perry's career around this time and they were very close, often
sharing sessions and rhythms. Ironically it would be Bunny Lee that took over Perry's roll at WIRL and become
responsible for the labels products in years to come. Clifford Rae who give control to Bunny for a lot of the
WIRL product and even gave him his shop 101 Orange Street. So here we have a collection of music born out
of a time spent at WIRL Records and providing an important chapter in Lee Perry's career and indeed to the
story of Reggae itself.
Hope you enjoy the set.

General Levy / Cutty Ranks - Incredible (wrongtom Rx) / As You See It (mr Benn Rx)

Following the success of their 2012 Record Store Day collaboration with the legendary Fashion Records, Nice Up! return with another two classic cuts from the vaults, remixed and refashioned for 2013! First up, East London's Wrongtom takes time out of his packed schedule to rework the massive 'Incredible' by General Levy. Universally loved, very few people know it was originally recorded as a dancehall number, then later remixed in a jungle style by M-Beat for chart success around the globe. It is a tune that has traversed genres and ages and still smashes any dance to this day. Wrongtom takes it back to the source with a fresh bumping reggae riddim featuring live instrumentation and his trademark dub fx. Over on the flip, rising star of the reggae world Mr Benn gives his spin on the modern dancehall sound with a dancefloor pleasing remix of Cutty Ranks 'As You See It'. Probably one of Cutty's lesser known tracks, this also found its home in the jungle raves of the mid '90s when sampled extensively by the producers of the day. Taking his cues from classic '90s dancehall producers such as Dave Kelly, Philip "Fatis" Burrell and Bobby Digital, this remix showcases the producer's talents perfectly. This release will form part of a full album of remixes from the Fashion back catalogue, expected later in the year.

The Ethiopians - Freedom Train

The Ethiopians are one of the great vocal groups to come out of Jamaica. Singing songs of life and times as they found them, themes that resonated with the people of the Island that made them such a treasured group. Lenard Dillon (b. 9 December, 1942, Port Antonio, Jamaica) the founding member of the Ethiopians began his singing career at Clement 'Coxonne' Dodd's Studio One. Initially he recorded under the name of Jack Sparrow, and backed by the Wailers, cutting 'Ice Water' and 'Suffering In The Land'. Under The Wailers encouragement, he went on to form his
own vocal group. Recruiting singers Stephan Taylor (b.1944, Portland, Jamaica) and Aston 'Charlie' Morris to become The Ethiopians. They cut 'Live Good', 'Why You Gonna Leave Me Now' and 'Owe Me No Pay Me'. Although receiving favourable response, Aston Morris decided to leave the band and the remaining pair carried on and cut 'I'm A Free
Man' and 'Don Dead Already' and 'For You'. On meeting contract builder Leebert Robertson who had recently returned to live in Jamaica, ashad he wanted to get into the music business, a session was booked for Treasure Isle Studios. The session produced their seminal 'Train To Skaville' track, which became an immediate hit in Jamaica and in the UK, when in 1967 it reached number 40 in the charts. They also cut 'Engine 54', which became the title of their debut album. Its
follow up 'I Need You / Do It Sweet', did not fare so well and the band moved over to Sonia Pottinger's stable, where they cut 'The Whip / Cool It Amigo' which revived their fortunes and proved another big hit for the band. Two more hits followed 'Stay Loose Mama' and 'The World Goes Ska', after which the band decided to return to a trio, adding
Melvin 'Mellow' Reid to the line up. The band now hit another run of successes with producer JJ Johnson 'Everything Crash, 'Gun Man', 'Hong Kong Flu' and 'The Selah'. Many hits followed leading the band to work with a variety of Jamaican producers. Such tracks as 'I Want To Be a Better Man, ' Conquering Lion', 'Fire A Mus Mus' Tail', and the timeless 'Reggae Hit The Town' to name a few. Two albums 'Reggae Power' (1969) and 'Woman Capture Man' (1970), pulled a lot of these tunes together. Sadly Taylor was killed in 1975 after been struck by a van in a road accident. Dillon returned to Port Antonio till 1977, when he was persuaded to return to Treasure Isle studios with producer Niney The
Observer and cut the Rasta based album 'Slave Call'. Additional members who joined for this album were Bro Fatty, Bro Ewing, Bro T, Mello and Hychi Dread. An album that showed all the Ethiopians magic had not been lost.
For this release we have included the full 'Slave Call' set, 'Ethiopian National Anthem', 'Slave Call', 'Guilty Conscience', 'Hurry On', 'Mus Follow Babylon'(on CD Edition), 'Train To Skaville (1977 version, on CD Edition), 'Culture', 'Obeah Book', 'Let It Be' and 'I Love Jah'. Alongside some of the bands early hits including the original version of 'Train To Skaville', 'Engine 54', the great and poignant 'Everything Crash', 'Reggae Hit The Town' and 'The Selah'. An interesting set to remind us what a great group the Ethiopians really were.

Winston Wright - The Liquidator Strikes Back

*Winston Wright is another unsung hero from the Jamaican musical
cannon. Although many might not know his name, you will have
heard him on many records in your collections. When we say that
it was he who played that classic Hammond organ riff on the
1969 'Liquidator' classic, as part of the Harry J Allstars, we might
begin to appreciate his talents that bit more. But not only this, many
1970's classics carry his organ, piano and arranging skills and
even before that time, many tunes cut in the 1960's,as part of Duke
Reid's house band Tommy McCook's Supersonics, carried the

Winston Wright signature sound.

Winston Wright (b 1944 , Jamaica) began his musical career in
the 1960's as a session player and soon became an integral part
of the Treasure Isle Studio house band, that became known as
Tommy McCook's Supersonics . He played on many of the
Rocksteady era hits that Duke Reid ruled the island with between
1966-1968.His mastery of the Hammond organ made him an in
demand session player. One such was Harry J studio's that had a
massive hit in the UK in 1969 with 'Liquidator' as the Harry J
Allstars of which Winston was a member. The same year saw him
cut some great tunes as part of Clancy Eccles' Dynamites.
The 1970's saw Winston Wright working closely with Dynamic
Sounds Studios' nucleus of musicians Cutting material for all the top
producers of the time including numerous sides for Bunny 'Striker'
Lee, which we have focused on for this set of tunes. From 1975
onwards Winston Wright was a member of Toots and the Maytals'
touring band, but we celebrate here his mighty fine studio work.
Adding his touches to many a fine rhythm as only Winston could
we hope you enjoy the set.
