Quantic & Anita Tijoux - Doo Wop (that Thing)

One-off collaboration between Quantic and the Grammy nominated Chilean MC and singer Anita Tijoux

On 7' vinyl in a beautiful full-colour sleeve, 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' is a one-off single bringing to light an exciting collaboration between two prolific and influential artists: Colombia-based, British-born producer and musician Quantic and the Grammy nominated Chilean MC and singer Anita Tijoux (also known as Ana Tijoux).

The A-Side, as you will no doubt have clocked, is a cover of Lauryn Hill's hit 'Doo Wop (That Thing)'; the lyrics flipped into Spanish by Tijoux, whose understated yet charismatic flow makes her a beguiling vocal presence, and a Cumbia beat giving an alternative, tropical slant on the late '90s hip hop/R 'n' B classic. Beats, bass, guitar and accordion are provided by Quantic, alongside a horn section comprising some of the musicians who have featured on his Flowering Inferno dub/reggae project.

'I wanted to continue on the link with hip hop and Cumbia that I touched on with my Hip Hop En Cumbia EP last year', says Will 'Quantic' Holland, whose music has been key in the recent surge of interest in Cumbia in the UK; 'It's important to unite the styles of North America with those of Latin America, make that connection. These worlds are closer together than we think, and I think it's nice to generate this kind of interaction musically speaking.'

The B-side brings another cover version, the Spanish language song 'Entre Rejas' (translation: 'Behind Bars') which was made famous in Latin America and the Spanish speaking Caribbean by the great accordionist and singer Lisandro Meza. The emotive song tells the story in the first person of a character who is in jail and his/her lover has forgotten about him/her inside; and this perfectly pitched rendition is sure to bring it to the attention of a new worldwide audience.

Blo - Chapter One

Blo

Chapter One

12inchMRBLP106
Mr Bongo
16.09.2013

Chapter One was Blo's debut album, originally released by EMI in 1973. Blo were remarkable for a variety of reasons: they were arguably the first rock trio to emerge from Africa and its members - Berkely 'Ike' Jones on guitar, Laolu 'Akins' Akintobi on drums and Mike 'Gbenga' Odumosu on bass - had a pedigree like few others at the time having worked as part of Ginger Baker's band Salt in the years leading to their formation in 1972.

Historical facts aside the album's enduring appeal and significance still resides in the music: eight tracks of infectious afro-rock that took the band's afro-beat foundations and melded them with the western psychedelia, rock and funk of the late 60s resulting in one of the finest African fusion albums. Making the most of the band's trio format, Chapter One features outstanding guitar work from Jones, fuzzy, raw and reminiscent of the western greats, backed by the funky interplay of Akintobi's drums and Odumosu's bass. Many of the album tracks are remarkable in how they balance a clearly rock inspired drive with an otherworldly, psychedelic vibe. While officially featuring only one instrumental track, the Arabic-tinged Miss Sagitt, vocals are far from the album's most prominent element, instead functioning more like an additional rhythmic element that the trio deploys in just the right amount.

Despite its standing today as one of the most sought after African albums, Chapter One performed poorly on release leading the band to switch labels and focus on a funkier sound for their follow up. Thus Chapter One remains a rare, and one of the finest, slices of African psychedelic funk, fetching up to $4000 for an original copy.

Cut La Vis - Little Way Different

Brighton Reggae/Hip Hop supremo Cut La Vis teams up with UK Hip Hop Legend
Mystro and roots singer Mr Melody for an anthemic Re-Lick of the righteous roots
classic, fusing boom-bap hip hop beats with a skanking groove and awesome vocal
deliveries. Mystro's conscious lyrics and trademark silky-smooth flow perfectly
compliments Mr Melody's sweetly sung chorus.

4 big-hitting producers have delivered huge remixes. Marcus Visionary brings a dark
and dubby vibe to his tearing drum and bass sound, while Wrongtom's lo-fi, gritty
version takes it back to old-school, smoke-filled dancehalls. Soundforce's Weedy G
(Germany) re-licks it in a nu-roots style with a sub-wrecking bassline and The Dirty
Dubsters' stripped down ragga work-out keeps it fresh with it's shifting drums and
heavy bass.

Lee Perry - At Wirl Records

Lee Perry's time at WIRL Records, later to be renamed Dynamic Sounds Studios, was a very productive time
in his career. A run of great singles and the shaping of a new sound, the beginning of what we know today as
Reggae .
Lee Perry (b. Rainford Hugh Perry, 28 March 1936, Hanover,Jamaica) began his entry into the music business at
the age of 16.Moving up to Kingston Town and working around various Sound Systems, before finding
employment at Coxonne Dodd's Studio One set up, in the late 50's early 1960's. Perry started out as a record
scout, organising sessions and supervising auditions at Dodd's record shop on Orange Street. Helping to make
hits for Delroy Wilson ( 'Joe Liges','Spit In The Sky') and the Maytals, which would lead to his own vocal records
released through Studio One.The musical backing for which, came from legendary Studio One house band The
Skatalites. Another important relationship for Perry, his first recordings with Bob Marley came in the form of
the Wailers, also providing backing, alongside the Soulettes who featured Rita Marley. Cutting such tunes as
'Chicken Scratch' around 1965/1966. This tune was also to provide him with one of his future nicknames
'Scratch'. A dispute over credits and money saw Perry leave Studio One and work with various producers
including Clancy Eccles and J. J. Johnson, before arriving at the door of producer Joe Gibbs in 1967. Here he
would write songs and produce hits for artists such as, Errol Dunkley and the Pioneers. A tune cut during his
time with Gibbs, voiced a snipe at fellow employee Dodd, a trademark that would become an outlet for his
frustrations in the business. This particular tune 'The Upsetter' would also provide another moniker and a name
for his label 'Upsetter'. Again lack of musical credit and financial reward saw Perry move on this time to WIRL
(West Indies Records Limited) Records, working alongside manager Clifford Rae, who would provide studio
time and pay for pressings in return for helping to promote and distribute WIRL product, which Perry would
carry out on his trusted Honda 50 motorcycle around Kingston town.
This period at WIRL saw some inspired work from Perry. 'Run For Cover' was another musical blow to a
previous employer, Coxonne Dodd and featured the Sensations on backing vocals and Lynn Taitt's guitar
picking skills. 'People Funny Boy' was a massive hit for Perry going on to sell over 60,000 copies. Joe Gibbs
would be at the end of this musical attack. Perry had felt Joe Gibbs had turned his back on him, after he had
provided hits for groups like, The Pioneers amongst others. The song would be one of the first records to
feature a New Beat (Reggae) inspired by the sounds coming out of a Pocomania Church, Perry had heard one
night. The congregation inside, wailed in a more slower way than the current musical style of the time Ska!. Perry
worked up this new style with Clancy Eccles, who would come under attack himself in 'You Crummy'. Their
closeness, which as detailed in that song would find them, 'Even shared the same Gal' but 'Now it's plain to see we
reached the end'. 'Set Them Free' was an answer record to Prince Buster's 'Judge Dread' (which had
featured Perry on it) a plea to the Judges in Jamaica that handed out extremely harsh sentences to the young
offenders of the time. The track was cut on the same rhythm as 'Run For Cover' . 'Django Shoots First'
inspired by the Spaghetti Western film of the same name, features Sir Lord Comic. One of the early DJ's who
used a jive talking style over rhythms. 'Night Doctor' was a hit instrumental that featured the organ talents
of Ansel Collins, that really push the tune along. 'Something You Got' was a cover of an USA R& B track by
Chris Kenner and 'Wind Up Girl' was cut at the same session. 'Water Pump' was a rude style track that
was cut later and originally released in 1974.As was 'People Sokup Boy' a later version of 'People Funny Boy'.
'Labrish' which means idol talk and gossip, was one of the first great talk over tunes that features Lee Perry
and producer Bunny 'Striker' Lee talking about the Political situation in Jamaica at the time and their own
financial situation and stories of various comrades. The track was originally released in 1973.
Bunny Lee would play a major part in lee Perry's career around this time and they were very close, often
sharing sessions and rhythms. Ironically it would be Bunny Lee that took over Perry's roll at WIRL and become
responsible for the labels products in years to come. Clifford Rae who give control to Bunny for a lot of the
WIRL product and even gave him his shop 101 Orange Street. So here we have a collection of music born out
of a time spent at WIRL Records and providing an important chapter in Lee Perry's career and indeed to the
story of Reggae itself.
Hope you enjoy the set.

Alpha Steppa is thrilled to announce the arrival of a truly unique and international release that is bound to enthral music lovers of every generation. Alpha And Omega, true icons of the dub world have joined forces with son and nephew Alpha Steppa to create Dub Dynasty. The record, in the words of Alpha Steppa, is 'an exploration of the unrelenting force of nature and the inspirational powers that brought us together to create this record.' Taking inspiration from this credo, the title Unrelenting Force is a true reflection of the power and community that dub has mastered. Alpha And Omega and Alpha Steppa have called on their favourite collaborators from the UK, Ireland, South America, New York, Jamaica and South Korea to join with them in merging their pure, unadulterated dub into one of the deepest releases ever seen. Alpha Steppa spent 2011/12 living and creating music in Asia, and he has been rewarded with some powerful connections in South Korea. For Unrelenting Force, he has called in Koonta, a member of Rude Paper and Korean reggae duo Koonta & Nuoliunce. Having worked with Alpha Steppa in Korea the pair's previous collaboration is indicated with the smoothness and ease in which Eastern and Western styles are mixed. Another artist from Korea to feature on the release is up-and-coming melodica wunderkind Smiley Song. Featured here on the tracks Dub Dynasty and Warrior Song, Smiley proves that the roots sound is alive and well all over the world. Singing on Chicken and The Cow and The Buffalo and Goodness is N'Goni, one of the most exciting and mysterious new lyricists/singers to hit the scene. One of the most powerful tracks on the album is Monsoon Come, featuring the Dublin based South American singer Ras Tinny, this song is a true representation of the Dub Dynasty sound and is sure to surface as a single. Dub Dynasty is pleased to introduce these exciting new talents to the dub community and are certain a huge future awaits them. Dub Judah, of Dub Jockey label fame, is one of the most respected names in UK Dub. His vocals on The Earth to It's Original Form prove that old dub gods don't die, they just get better and better. If you listen to dub and aren't in awe of the name Linval Thompson, you aren't listening hard enough. This iconic producer and singer has been making reggae since he was 20, playing with every major artist that ever passed through New York or Jamaica. A producer of over 40 albums, he is considered one of the essential contributors to reggae and its message in the 1970's golden era. Featured here on the dub Long Time, Thompson's vocals are as memorable as they are powerful. A taster of the full Linval Thompson release from Vibration Lab due for release later this year. Last but not least, Cian Finn contributes his unique blend of Celtic spirit and rootikal dub to 9 Years and Dub Island. Finn's work as a member of Intinn saw the group named Best Upcoming Reggae act in the U.K and Ireland and he is renowned for his overwhelming positivity and insight into the principals of dub/reggae. Finn worked with Alpha Steppa on last year's Moonshine Steppas release and the pair play off each other beautifully to create music that has a universal appeal and message. The whole album is presented on limited edition 12" vinyl in a beautifully designed sleeve accompanied by a CD containing bonus mixes and dubs. This LP is powered by bass, the kind of bass that can reverberate through your whole body and lift you into another time and place. Raw, pure and unadulterated dub.

Alpha Steppa /lutan Fyah /dj Madd - Two Sacred Swords

Alpha Steppa Discovers The Two Sacred Swords Of Lutan Fyah: Vocal, Dub and Remix. Alpha Steppa (Steppas Records/ Dub Dynasty) presents the vocal talents of Jamaican reggae singer Lutan Fyah. Lutan started his musical career in 1999, recording for Buju Banton's legendary Gargamel Records. Since then he has gone on to release numerous records with various high-profile labels, including VP and Greensleeves. This release features a vocal and dub version from Alpha Steppa plus a chest-rattling remix from Hungarian-born DJ Madd. Madd gravitated towards the low-end sonics of dubstep in 2008, with early releases on the well-respected Boka Records and the infamous white-label WAR series. The success of these early releases caught the attention of several front-line dubstep labels and Madd went on to release with Black Box, Osiris, Wheel & Deal and Moonshine Recordings. An essential Steppas single presented in the brand new black & gold foil printed house-bag, quality assured with the golden lion stamp of approval.

Congo Natty - Jah Warriors

Congo Natty

Jah Warriors

Big Dada
05.07.2013

The warm-up for the first full artist album by Mikail Tafari aka Congo Natty aka Rebel MC in twenty years - the brimstone-heavy 'Jungle Revolution' - continues with the first full single taken from the record.

Engaging with the new trend for 150bpm jungle, 'Jah Warriors' twists the form into a righteous roots reggae tune that rolls out in its second half with all the power and propulsive force you'd expect from a Jungle legend. Featuring the sweet tones of Nanci Correia, quality reggae stylings from YT and hype man duties from Tafari's teenage son Yosief, it's a superb marriage of junglistic style and fearsome bass which sounds both timeless and utterly contemporary.

The first remix comes from Joker, originally introduced to Tafari by Buggsy, who has worked with both men. He keeps the reggae feel of the original (how could you get rid of it!) but gives the whole thing an irresistible, stoned, purple slide. Machinedrum is next up. The sometime Azealia Banks producer and new Ninja Tune signee is a massive jungle fan and opts to pay respect to the tradition with a very clever re-work of 'UK Allstars.' The junglists are fully represented, finally, by mixes from Benny Page and Serial Killerz, both of whom take the tempo back up to more familiar jungle territory, pile on gigantic b-lines and let the party really start.

The Fontanelles - Pinprick / Criminality

The Fontanelles are the newest signings to First Word Records. Originally formed to be the onstage band for the London run of Fela! The Musical, the band's natural chemistry was such that they instinctively continued performing together when the show ended. They took the energy of the stage show and started working on original material, adding reggae, ethio-jazz and ska influences to the afrobeat source. The Fontanelles sound is truly their own, with their incandescent live shows a focal point for their unique energy as a band.

For their first release we've picked two live favourites that showcase just a fraction of the band's deep sound. 'Criminality' is a straight-ahead afro-stomper, bringing the band's virtuoso skills as musicians to the fore, whilst still funky enough to move any dancefloor. 'Pinprick' takes in the slightly dubbier influences of the band, with an elastic bass-line underpinning a seriously catchy horn-led hook.

Dub Unit Feat Speng Bond - Ganjaman Ep'

This is the first release of the label Cubiculo Records, a newborn label based in London / Lisbon that will feature Dub Unit (PT) and Speng Bond (UK) with the single EP debut 'Ganjaman'.
The 'Super Mariojuana Riddim' is inspired by the 8 Bit music, so called chiptune, blended with laptop / digital Reggae and influenced by retro computer games such as Nintendos Super Mario. The Portuguese producer Dub Unit created this Riddim based in a old school tune from Horace Ferguson called 'Sensi Addict' and U-Roy's 'Music Addict', but also brought the 8 Bit feeling because of his appreciation for producers like Prince Jammy, Jahtari, Maffi, and labels like Jammy's, Harmodio, Unity Sounds, among others. Super Mariojuana Riddim was produced and mixed by Dub Unit where the English veteran Deejay Speng Bond, from the UK based label Reality Shock Records, sings 'Ganjaman' in a wicked and conscious way.
The 12' vinyl will have six tracks, featuring on the A side the original version, the riddim version and the Acapella of 'Ganjaman' so that any Speng Bond fan can do a remix for their own music. The flip side of the record will have three different remixes from Dub Unit´s & Speng Bond 'Ganjaman', where you can find a Digistep Version from the Portuguese producer Delmighty Sounds, a Cumbia / Raggamuffin version from the Colombian producer Alguacil Dub Killa and finally a Jungle version from the Portuguese Dirty Skank Beats.

LES FILS DU CALVAIRE are hybrid, between fancy french pop, decadent club music and outgoing cabaret.
Pop extrapolation of dOP, they have sense of show, phrase and mixture.
More than the immediate pop seduction, "Femme d'Affaires" gauges fake containment, funky and warm background, 80's synthetics winks, and panoramic contemporary sound.
