Ebonystic - Married To One In Love With Another / Ain't It Good To You

Most of what we know about this amazingly soulful congregation comes from Sir Shambling, the extremely knowledgeable and best database on southern and deep soul music anywhere in the world. Ebonystic hailed from Aiken, South Carolina and were led by Lester Smalls. The group had some members from nearby Augusta, Georgia and the lovely ballad 'Married To One In Love With Another' definitely came from the Peach state. It is beautifully sung with Smalls' heartfelt lead particularly impressive. The minimal group backing is reinforced with some heavyweight horns as Smalls ratchets up the emotional tension. Pretty soon after this 45 came out on Scream Records in 1974, the group changed its name to Hearts Of Fire and there are copies of the disc with the new name inked in and Ebonystic scored out. The B-side is a bit unusual, up-tempo dancer with some weird sound ingredients that definitely grow on you with every spin. As original copies are near impossible to find you might as well indulge yourself and get this Everland 45 reissue. And enjoy these top-tunes in a sound quality you never heard them before.

Isayahh Wuddha - Urban Brew

For Fans Of: Arthur Russell, Cody Chesnutt, Music From Memory, Can, Damo Suzuki

Cody Chesnutt’s Headphone Masterpiece is a core work in the WotNot inspiration book. Put that release through Google Deep Dream and Isayahh Wuddha’s Urban Brew is what you end up with. Recorded in Kyoto to multitrack tape recorder with vintage drum machines, guitars and Casio keyboard, the result is an eddying blend of lo-fi soulful indie, funk, rock and psychedelia.

The release is led by Wuddha’s strange but alluring vocal delivery, moving between tender-to-the-point-of-breaking any-second, almost-apathetic-semi-rapping and friendly conversational with the occasional James Brown scream dotted around.

While the music ranges from lively to ballad-esque, there is a sense of fun and playfulness throughout, enhanced by the raw, slapped-together production style.

With roots in Taiwan and Japan, Kyoto’s Isayahh Wuddha counts avant garde saxophonists Albert Ayler and Kaoru Abe among his early influences, but attributes his decision to make and release music to reading Michael Jackson’s biography!

MIKE SPONZA - Made in the Sixties

An album dedicated to the '60s, a decade for me very fascinating in many ways and on which there is much to say; it is also the period in which I was born, and for some time I was thinking of making a record about that decade. 10 songs. One for each year. 10 stories inspired by events, facts, people, cultures, ideas, which are intertwined to look at the 60s in a dual perspective: the glamor side and swinging on one side, the dark and problematic side on the other. 10 controversial years that have changed youth culture forever. All filtered with different musical languages, from rock to Latin, from pop to acoustic, from soul to rock'n'roll. In 2014 my album ERGO SUM was produced at Abbey Road Studios by Rob Cass, producer of the English rock blues scene and Giles Martin's right-hand man at Abbey Road. At the beginning of 2017, Rob suggested that I also produce my new recording project. The collaboration with Pete Brown is born - one of the greatest English rock authors, active since the early 60s, but above all the man behind the major successes of Cream (wrote White Room, Sunshine Of Your Love, I Feel Free, Theme From An Imaginary Western ...). To give an important graphic touch, Romeo Toffanetti thought - famous illustrator (Nathan Never), who in 8 tables managed to perfectly represent the content of the songs.

Mr. K - Boogie Land B/w Lady, Lady, Lady (edits By Mr. K)

Mr. K returns to the 12-inch format for the latest in his series of edits for Most Excellent Unlimited, making the most of the long-playing wax with two contrasting cuts. First up is Ike Strong's "Boogie Land," an obscure side that was originally released in 1981 and saw plenty of action at the Paradise Garage. Krivit's edit is inspired by Larry Levan's technique in running the tune, focusing as Larry did on the late-song breakdown before dropping into a stripped-down rendition of the undulating main groove, a boogie bomb to be sure ! Don't let the name fool you — the enigmatic Boogie Man Orchestra, stars of the flip side, are all about disco. The instrumental "Lady, Lady, Lady" first appeared in DJ sets in the summer of '75, the prime breakout year for disco, making its way from Chicago all the way to clubs on both coasts despite having no national distribution. Pre-dating the introduction of the 12-inch single, the song never saw release on the larger format, until now. Krivit's edit takes advantage of the extended playing time by easing into the Philly-style orchestral groove and letting it breath for a dramatic, building dancefloor moment.

The Allergies - Promised Land

The Allergies

Promised Land

12inchJAL356V
Jalapeno
27.09.2021

The Allergies are back with a new album – Rejoice! And the feel-good funk, hip-hop swagger, and dusty vintage loops, is everything you need right now.

Across the 13 tracks, producers Rackabeat and DJ Moneyshot dig deep into their souls, as well as their record collections, serving up a day-glo blast of super positive sampledelia that'll have you smiling from ear to ear.

Built from scratch during lockdown, each song offers up a world to lose yourself in, free from any and all dark clouds. It's their Promised Land, and everyone is welcome to bask in the sunshine.

Along for the ride is LA rap legend, Andy Cooper Ugly Duckling, soul sensation Marietta Smith, dance music heavyweight, Dynamite MC, and the unmistakable voice of hip-hop royalty, Lyrics Born.

Everyone got the memo, as career-best performances roll one after the other. And each singer, rapper, scratcher, and sampler, unites through the power of good good music.

Highlights on the LP include the swamp blues meets half-time hip-hop monster, 'Lean On You'. The Latin funk bomb, 'Move On Baby'. Soul rollers 'New Thing' and 'Are You Ready', and the show-stopping and stirring Moby-ish beat banger, 'Promised Land'.

Almost a concept album, the idea of fresh starts, strange new worlds, loss, solidarity, freedom, and the communities we find in clubs, festivals, and making and sharing music, began to come out, organically, through the song-writing process.

"In a weird way the album wrote itself," says DJ Moneyshot. "We'd be lost in our own little world of hypnotic loops as days passed, and samples jumped out of the shelves, and just started to make sense as they got chopped and layered into these tracks."

Early support for the singles, and response from fans across the globe, suggests that this, their fifth album, really could be something special. Come on in…

MUITO KABALLA POWER ENSEMBLE - MAMARI

The double LP ‘Mamari’ by Muito Kaballa Power Ensemble from Cologne (Germany) will be released on 28 May on outernational Brussels label Rebel Up Records. It represents the vast musical development of the Muito Kaballa project since the release of the first album 'Everything is Broke' in 2019 on German label Switchstance Recordings.

Muito Kaballa, also known as Niklas Mündemann, started out as a one-man show on the streets and quickly gained attention through his loopstation performances. After the recording of the first album Niklas Mündemann wanted to move away from the entertainer image and explore new musical ideas. When he met musician Jan Janzen, the two instantly decided to create a band and take the project to the next level. The band now consists of members Nora Beisel on vocals, André van der Heide on drums, Leonard Gaab on percusscions, Marie Tjong-Ayong on trumpet and flugelhorn (replaced recently with Lilli Thomas on trumpet), Till Weise on bass, Benjamin Schneider on guitar, Tim von Malotki on baritone sax, Jan Janzen on keys and Niklas Mündemann on tenor sax, flute and synthesizer. The result is a jazz album that brims with afrobeat, afro-cuban and funk influences and current activist thoughts on social equality, racial politics, climate change and more, all through the voices & bodies of this young ensemble.

‘Mamari’ is the title song and first single. Bass player Till Weise composed the song about which he says; “When I first wrote Mamari, I wanted to create a song that I could play alone while singing along to it. Mamari is a song with a groove heart that moves forward fast and at the same time stumbles. Like riding a bike with bent wheels or the way how camels move, which is called the pace gait, or in arabic: Mamari.”

‘Aga Aga’ is named after a lake close to Cologne called Aggertalsperre. There happened to be an incident with our percussionist Leonard Gaab almost drowning in the ice cold lake - naked. The song fuses Mali blues with Afro Cuban influences.

‘Money. Equal. Trouble’ broaches the issue of our relation to money in ironic manner. The groove is fast and definitely evokes the desire to dance. It is inspired by classical Afrobeat.

‘Chung’ is the new arrangement of the former version on the album ‘Everything is Broke’ from 2019. It represents the development of the Muito Kaballa project and combines diverse influences from Maroccan Gnawa to Hip Hop and Jazz.

‘Tin Tin’ is another rearrangement that was issued before on the album ‘Everything is Broke’. It’s a melancholic song that transports heavy vibes as well as dance moods. The song is influenced by Afro Cuban music as well as Cumbia.

‘Don’t Go’ thematizes political issues in our society in a protest swagger. It might not be profound, but it defenitly reflects upon a certain feeling of anger and frustration about political issues. The song turns that anger into a powerful and danceable groove that takes the people away.

‘There’s Always Sun’ is a praise to life. With all its twists and turns, slow moments as well as groovy moments, it takes into account the different turns life can take. It accompanies that journey with the catchy message that there is always sun, even though we might not always see it.

'Curupira' is the 2nd single of the album. The Curupira is a mythological creature that was known for being able to communicate with the inhabitants of the forest, notably alarming them about danger. With this song we want to alarm you, and ourselves. “We need to understand that there is no Curupira, it’s all on us”. Curupira lives inside each and everyone of us. We need to let it out and fight for climate justice together.

Curupira was also released as an EP with a remix of Ghanaian-German producer Lee Bass (Gato Preto) and serves as a fundraiser to support the project of Resgate Climático in Brazil. They recently started to actively protect and reforest land in the northeastern state of Bahia that once used to be pristine rainforest. Under the current political circumstances and the record wildfires in the country, their work has become more important than ever.

EL MICHELS AFFAIR - THE ABOMINABLE LP

El Michels Affair follows up the massive success of their full length Yeti Season with The Abominable EP. A collection of unreleased tracks, alternate takes, and instrumentals from the Yeti Season recording sessions. EMA's blending their signature cinematic soul sound with influences from Turkis Funk and the grittiest of Bollywood soundtracks yielded an instant classic The Fader calls "a carnival of dusty funk and soul". The EP starts off with the unreleased gem "Messy Grass" whose synth intro, peppered with distant yeti cries, gives way to a tremendous backing track that Tamer Pinarbasi's Qanun dances over. On "Cham Cham" EMA invites Piya Malik to the microphone again to share her styled storytelling vocals over the instrumental track from Yeti Season's "Perfect Harmony". Where some of the tunes on the EP have vocals added, some of them have them removed letting the band take center stage; "Poison Song", "Uncut Gem", "Smoked", and "Progress" are all instrumental here giving them a wholly different energy than the vocal versions. The EP is being released with two different covers, each one has two paintings from different Ghanaian mobile cinema artists commissioned through Chicago's Deadly Prey Gallery and are interpretations of the original album artwork. One version is paintings by Stoger and Heavy J, who also contributed cover paintings to the Return To The 37th Chamber album. The other version of the cover is two paintings by Teshie and Farkira.

JORDAN RAKEI - WHAT WE CALL LIFE

Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, producer, and songwriter Jordan Rakei is back with his fourth studio album

What We Call Life is Jordan Rakei’s most vulnerable and intimate album to date. Its lyrics concern the lessons that the New Zealand-born, Australia-raised, and London-based artist learned about himself during therapy, a journey that began two years ago when he started reading about the ‘positive psychology’ movement. Rakei, already a practitioner of meditation and mindfulness, was curious about the potential of using therapy for further self-discovery. During the process, he began to learn more about his behaviour patterns and anxieties, and addressed his long-standing irrational phobia of birds – a fear often associated with the unpredictable and the unknown, and something explored in the album’s creative direction and visuals.

“As we worked through it, it made me realise I would love to talk about the different lessons I learned from therapy in my music: about my early childhood, my relationship with my parents and siblings, becoming independent in London, being in a new marriage, understanding how my marriage compares to the relationship my parents had” Rakei says.

Black vinyl LP, printed inner sleeve, fully artworked outer sleeve with obi. Includes double-sided lyric poster and MP3 download code. Artwork by Justin Tyler Close.

Peech Boys - DON'T MAKE ME WAIT (White vinyl Repress)

The original, the inspirational, the bombastic, the never bettered, the one.
'Don't make me wait' is all of the above and so much more. Classic to the core. Huge earth shattering record right here.
OK, so the scoop, for the uninitiated is this - the Peech Boys were Larry Levan's group, we're talking early 80's NYC here, 1982 to be precise, around the height of the Paradise Garage as Larry was making the transition from superstar DJ to producer. He brought a sparse, dubbed out, narcotic late night feel to the overall sound of this record. This was a short-lived project, but the influence is still felt today, the Peech Boys DNA is inside the veins of modern dance music, as is Larry's. There is no underestimating what an impact this record had. 7+ minutes of electronic bliss, trailblazing stuff, and don't get us started on the dub. Do yourself a favour, BUY this classic if you don't own it already, you'll keep coming back to it time and time again. Guaranteed. This essential 12" is repressed here in it's original 1979 glory, an essential classic that has stood the test of time for the last 30+ years & is now available again, remastered & repressed for 2017 in conjunction with West End Records, NYC.

Repress

This brilliant 1972 album from UK 70s funk outfit Cymande (pronounced Sah-mahn-day) has been heralded as the best Brit Funk album of all time.

Taking influences from their Guyanese and Jamaican roots they fused reggae influenced basslines, Afro-tinted Nyabinghi percussion, psychedelic touches and American style funk instrumentation creating a unique sound which the band referred to as nyah-rock.

Their tracks later became a mainstay of block parties and hip hop break samples.

This, their debut, boasted perhaps their best-known funk anthem The Message and the much-sampled Bra, adopted by pioneering DJs like DJ Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash before being plundered by De La Soul, The Wu-Tang Clan, The Coup and The Fugees to name but a few.

TEDDY BRYANT - IN THE BEGINNING

NBN Records is very proud to introduce to you, Teddy Bryant, singer, composer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist from Conway, South Carolina.

Despite being his first solo album, Teddy Bryant is no rookie in the music industry, as he's been playing local shows with his Contemporary Jazz band called Urbyne since 1998 and releasing a Neo-Soul album in 2012 under the moniker of Moonlight Ora. Being the son of a Jazz player and after learning the piano at an early age, he soon realized he had unique musical skills : a boiling talent for composing melodies and harmonies and an unparallaled voice that could remind of none other than the legendary Marvin Gaye. Teddy does his own thing though, and he approached the label with the album already finished from top to bottom, including the artwork, made from an old analog poto of Teddy's mother.

On « In The Beginning » Teddy invites you to a trip around his world, at a cross between Contemporary Soul, Street Soul and R&B. « A dreamy concept of sonic realness is an ode to everlasting love and pays tribute to Sade, Marvin Gaye, Prince and Quincy Jones » as he describes it. Showcasing out-of-this-world vocal abilities and composition skills, Teddy sounds just as good as the all-time greats he got his inspiration from.

CELIA WA - WASTRAL LP

Celia Wa

WASTRAL LP

12inchHS217VL
Heavenly Sweetness
19.09.2022

Energy and inspiration come from the Gwoka. From these hands which, when they are not a raised fist, pound the drums, proud of their roots and of their Guadeloupean identity.
This is where Celia Wa comes from, from all that she inherited by spending her childhood between the West Indies and France.

The first years of her life were spent discovering the musical soul of the island, letting the seven gwoka rhythms seep into her until they became an integral part of her. The following years were spent discovering reggae, salsa, jazz and the omnipresent hip hop. Music whose original source was close to her, but to which she only opened up after having travelled thousands of kilometres.

After two self-produced EPs, Wastral is the sum of these inspirations and influences. Born in the acoustic, it is under the modern and futuristic production of Victor Vagh (producer of Flavia Coelo) that the seven tracks were revealed and then sublimated. Dissipated in the vaporous arrangements, softened under the effect of the synthetic layers, the organic was meticulously covered with an electro varnish disturbed by the echoes and reverbs of the dub. Celia Wa's soaring, twirling flute grazes or stirring the groove, her lyrics reviving the memory of her island. In Creole or in English, they tell the story in the present tense without forgetting the past. A past full of the sounds of struggles, of clashing chains and cracking whips, marks that have disappeared from bodies but remain deeply rooted in families and history. New feminine signature at Heavenly Sweetness, Celia Wa draws with Wastral the map of an avant-garde stellar journey in which the musical star of Guadeloupe shines the brightest.

Christine Lewin / Tricia Dean - In The Mood / Don't Let It Go To Your Head

Two standout versions from the Lewin sisters, now available back-to-back on 45 for the first time. Classic soul turned reggae grooves produced by guitarist John Kpiaye and Adrian Joseph aka DJ Smokey Joe.Recorded in the mid-80s, a decade after the first advent of UK lovers rock and tailor-made for bass-heavy sound system playback, Christine Lewin’s cover of Tyrone Davis’s ‘In The Mood’ transformed his sensual after-hours classic into a female-led hit, that became a staple on Lovers playlists both then and now. Similarly, Tricia Dean’s sought-after cover of Jean Carn’s soul favourite ‘Don’t Let It Go To Your Head’ follows the same formula from Kpiaye and Smokey, synth-led rhythms reflecting the times rooted firmly in a local London scene.

Circle City Band - Magic / My Place

A clubland favourite amongst boogie and soul fans, Circle City Band’s ’Magic’ is made available on 45, coupled for the first time with the band’s follow-up single ‘My Place’. Originally released in 1983 on Tyscot sub-label Circle City Records, ’Magic’ was a best-selling single in the band’s Indianapolis hometown. Whilst making waves across the Midwest US R&B charts, it became a popular import in the UK and a staple for DJs, often being described by fans as one of the best Slave soundalikes with its classic bass groove and appeal. In the early 80s, Thomas was introduced to multi-track recording by producer and multi-instrumentalist Reggie Griffin. A fellow Indianapolis native, Griffin was working for Sylvia Robinson in New Jersey at the time as an in-house musician at Sugar Hill Records. “He taught me a bunch of stuff and showed me how to use reel-to-reel,” explained Thomas. “Reggie came home from Sugar Hill Records. He’d done Grandmaster Flash and all that stuff and he bought a drum machine, vocoder and a keyboard with him. I said ‘hey man I got some studio time, come and hang out.’ So he helped me put this one track together and I built this song ‘Magic’. Frankie Crocker broke the record on WBLS and then BET ending up using the instrumental for a theme song”

Dyson’s Faces - We’re Two Fools In Love / Don’t Worry About The Jones

We’re delighted to introduce our 9th release and it’s a biggie.

Dyson’s Faces released two album’s worth of incredible underground soul that has long convinced us that the band should’ve been icons of 70’s soul. A sound that combines a soaring mix of male and female harmonies, tight backing band and wonderful strings - reminding us of the likes of The Voices Of East Harlem. The story of Dyson’s Faces traces back to a small group called The Differences. Headed up by one Clifton Dyson (younger brother of Ronnie Dyson), he recruited three Durham, North Carolina, vocalists; together they released just one 45 - entitled Five Minutes on the Mon’ca Records imprint in 1971. A proper crossover anthem.

It was during this recording that Clifton came to work with the talented arranger Eddie Drennon who would introduce Clifton to producer Jose Williams and the two laid down the basics of Clifton debut LP. Without a name for the band, Williams suggested Dyson’s Faces to reflect the ever-evolving background players Clifton was using. And in fact, many of the original players on the albums remain unknown. Confusingly another album was released with the same title some years later and includes some of the original tracks from the first album. Fast forward to the present-day and it was good friend of Miles Away and fantastic DJ - Buddy Love, who got in touch and recommended we give these tracks another little listen. After enjoying both albums we lovingly cherry-picked two tracks and are delighted to now release them for the very first time on a 45 in our teal green labels.

Ruby & The Mudflaps - Breezy

Ruby&The Mudflaps

Breezy

12inchCORDLP009
Cordial Recordings
29.10.2021

Breezy' by Ruby & the Mudflaps features a collection of studio cuts alongside a number of live recordings from the 1970s. These songs are exclusive to Cordial Recordings and have previously never been available on vinyl apart from 'Is That Enough?' which we released in 2018 on 7" single.

The live recordings capture the magical Haight-Ashbury west coast vibes with a crossover of soul and hippy chic. The original full length studio demo version of 'Breezy' starts the proceedings off on Side A and is followed by the uptempo swing of 'Without You.' The steppers of dream of 'Is That Enough?' slows the pace down before the tempo is raised again with the prophetic 'Only Love Spoken Here.' The album closes off with the first live version of 'Mountain Man.'

The B side kicks off with 'Love Song' that conjures up visions of lying on China Beach in the late 1960s without a care in the world. We are then treated to a fine rendition of Tower of Power's 'Don't Change Horses (In The Middle Of The Stream).' The final studio recording in 'You Want Me' comes next before segueing into the jazzy work out of 'Time.' This album version of 'Country Girl' is a different take of the song that we had previously released as a B Side. We close the album off with the second live recording of 'Mountain Man.'

We believe that these songs deserved a wider audience or they risked the danger of being lost forever in time. We take changes here at Cordial Recordings from time to time and hope that you like this collection of golden nuggets.

Bombstrikes deliver another outstanding limited edition 7'', this time with Glasgow duo Shaka Loves You taking care of business. Both tracks on this Double A deliver on the funk credentials SLY have become renowned for, with aficionados such as Craig Charles always supporting their output. On the A side, their modern classic 'Boogie' featuring the vocal talents of Fullee Love (AKA Soup of Jurassic 5), finally gets the vinyl release many have been asking for. On the flipside, new Shaka Loves You track 'Get Down' is a sure-fire party starter, locking piano hooks with a horn section and touch of soul. Another essential release in the Bombstrikes vinyl catalogue. As always, grab yours quick, these don't tend to stay around long.

The Edwards Generation - Get Up, Get Up Get Out On The Dancefloor

'Get Get, Get Up' by The Edwards Generation is our favourite song from the partnership with the family. We decided at the beginning to release it as a single and not to include it on the vinyl release album. It is included on the CD version. It's a sprightly energetic warm song that's lifts your spirit on listens. We've also included 'Get Up On The Dancefloor' on the flip because we've had a lot feedback on this being the best cut on the vinyl album.

NIL'S JAZZ ENSEMBLE - NIL'S JAZZ ENSEMBLE

After years unavailable, this reissue presents this 1976 album in its full glory, with remastered sound and original artwork, including the rare promo poster.

Pressed on 180g vinyl. Once resettled in Lima, Peru, in 1974 after spending some time playing in a jazz quintet in Berlin, sax player Nilo Espinosa would put together the Nil's Jazz Ensemble, a top-notch array of local talent consisting of Pancho Sáenz (trumpet), Miguel 'Chino' Figueroa (keyboards), Oscar Stagnaro (bass), Andrés Silva (drums and percussion), Jorge Montero, Richie Zellon and Ramón Stagnaro (guitars). They recorded one single album that remains not only as one of the truly grails for collectors of Latin-American jazz but also as an outstanding piece of music on its own. The opening song "Reflexiones" is a mind-blowing jazz-funk number right up there with the very best of the genre, written by Black Sugar's former member Miguel 'Chino' Figueroa, featuring a fantastic work on trumpet and rhodes. The album also includes a cover of the rare groove classic "Hard Work" that could have easily sneaked into the funkiest side of the Prestige catalogue. Following the success of this album, Espinosa would expand his band to a big band format and tour local theatres and clubs in Lima, where jazz music was a popular genre at the time. Our reissue presents this 1976 album in its full glory, pressed on 180g vinyl with remastered sound and original artwork, including the rare promo poster.

Willie Williams - Give It All I Got / Do You Understand

Blind, Chicago soul singer Willie Williams was first discovered performing in clubs in and around the Windy City. He was signed to ABC records by their A&R Director for the Midwest Johnny Pate a former Jazz bassist, independent producer, arranger and songwriter in his own right. Pate was a friend and colleague of fellow musician, songwriter and founding member of one of ABC’s prolific vocal groups The Trends, Tom Dorsey. Pate and Dorsey would contribute heavily as writers and producer throughout Willie’s recording career, beginning with his first ABC 45 release in 1966 “Have You Ever Been Played For A Fool/With All My Soul”. The release’s b-side became a popular radio play at the time with Willie becoming known as Willie “Soul” Williams for a while. Two further ABC releases were to follow “It Doesn’t Pay/Just Because” (1967) and “I’m Through With You/Strung Out” (1968).

Willie’s next 45 release although recorded in Chicago under Johnny Pate’s supervision found it’s way to another major label, RCA, although credited as a GWP Production (Gerrard W. Purcell). The 45 in question being the excellent Tom Dorsey penned songs “Just To Be Loved By You/Name It” released during 1969.

Two Willie Williams 45 releases did appear on the Gamma label but I’m unsure if one or both of these are by the same Willie Williams in question.

Throughout his recording career Willie continued to work the clubs with his own band which was led by his bass guitarist and confidant Bradley (Brad) Bobo a man who featured as a session musician on many recording sessions including the creation of The Notation’s album of the same name for Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom subsidiary label Gemigo.

On the 22nd of December 1970 a recording session was held in RCA’s Studio B, on North Wacker Drive, Chicago with sound engineer Russ Vestuto. The session was financed by Tom Dorsey who amongst other song writing gratuities had been paid handsomely for the 3 songs “Love Machine”, “My Baby’s Love” and “How Are You Fixed For Love” which he had wrote and contributed to the blue-eyed hit group, The O’Kaysion’s “Girl Watcher” ABC album. The result of this session yielded four Willie Williams tracks. Brad Bobo played bass guitar on the session, the composer of the four songs Tom Dorsey supplied the arrangements and Tom’s wife Carolyn (also a former group members of The Trends) joined both he and Brad on backing vocals.

The four songs were then offered to Eddie Thomas who chose two of them to release on a 45 single. The two songs being “Must Mean Love” which was later renamed “The Baa Baa Song “and “Psyched Out” which Eddie then released on his own Lakeside label, thus leaving the two other songs to remain unissued in the can.

Willie has now sadly passed away but in his later life once the opportunity’s for performing artists began to dwindle he chose a different path in his life, gaining a Doctors degree, he went on to become a College Lecturer. Tom Dorsey too turned his back on the music industry apart from his publishing company to concentrate on his family life as well as founding a very successful business involving one of his other great life passions, photography. Luckily for us he never lost the master tape of Willie’s sessions and after several years of tentative enquiries he graciously relented to my request to put them out. So now before you we have the two excellent previously unissued Willie Williams songs that Eddie Thomas passed on, the delightfully soulful “Give It All I Got” backed with the funky, social conscience themed “Do You Understand”, lost early 1970’s Chicago Soul at its finest.
