Hugo Fattoruso - Hugo Fattoruso Y Barrio Opa

London based Brazilian specialists Far Out Recordings venture further out to Uruguay to record a new album with fusion legend Hugo Fattoruso. After a twenty-year search for the man behind the cult 70s jazz-funk group Opa, Far Out are honoured to present Barrio Opa: a new work from Fattoruso and his team of world-class musicians, including the sensational Candombe drumming of the renowned Silva brothers. Recorded at Sondor Studios, Montevideo, the album is the natural development of the original Opa sound, fusing Afro-Uruguayan rhythms, jazz harmony and heavy funk attitude, under Hugo's unique musical vision.

Born in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo in 1943, composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Hugo Fattoruso has had a profound influence on every aspect of Latin American musical culture. From early beginnings, playing in his family band at street festivals around Uruguay, to fronting Los Shakers: South America's answer to the Beatles, and one of the most successful rock and roll groups from the continent. At the end of the sixties Fattoruso was looking to broaden his musical horizons, and in 1969 he moved to New York where he formed Opa and went on to rub shoulders with the likes of Ron Carter and Creed Taylor.

Fusing Candombe (traditional rhythm of Uruguay) with rock, jazz, funk and other Latin American rhythms, Opa created a distinctive Afro-Uruguayan voice within the global jazz vernacular, influencing a generation of musicians throughout the seventies and beyond. During the eighties Fattoruso moved to Brazil, where he continued to work and record with Brazilian artists including Milton Nascimento, with whom he composed the World Music Grammy winning Nascimento album in 1997. Fattoruso also famously collaborated extensively with Airto Moreia, arranging and playing on a plethora of hit records including Fingers and I'm Fine, How Are You. More recently Fattoruso's music has been sampled by the likes Flying Lotus and Madlib.

With such a prolific career, Fattoruso's relative obscurity seems odd. Uruguay is dwarfed on either side by Brazil and Argentina, and while geography may have something to do with it, Hugo's own elusiveness may also explain why someone so influential has been hitherto, so underappreciated. A deeply humble figure, never settling for too long in any one place, Hugo has dedicated his life to music and little else. It has taken twenty years for Far Out to track down the man behind Golden Wings and Magic Time, and it wasn't until label boss Joe Davis met a Uruguayan producer (over one too many artisanal beers) at a world music conference in Budapest, that he finally made contact with one of his musical idols.

Following a few internet meetings and some very long impassioned conversations about Hugo's life, music and mutual musical friends in Brazil, Hugo began writing the new album, and Joe booked a seat on the next flight to Montevideo. Recorded at the state of the art Sondor Studios in Montevideo's iconic Barrio Sur district, the album features some of the world class musicians at the forefront of today's Uruguayan jazz scene, including Hugo's son Francisco Fattoruso on bass, Tato Bolognini on drums, Albana Barrocas on percussion and Nicolás Ibarburu on electric guitar. The album also features the Candombe drumming of the legendary Silva brothers, Mathías, Guillermo Diaz and Wellington, who give the album its Afro-Uruguayan identity, transporting the listener to Barrio Sur, the spiritual home of Montevideo's Candombe heritage.

In Hugo's own words this is the sound of Opa today.' This is most prevalent on 'Goldenwings' the fresh take on the funk-fusion masterpiece which became an underground hit in London jazz clubs in the 80s '. The stripped back yet equally rip-roaring trio piece 'Botijas' is led by Hugo's virtuosic piano playing and hypnotic wordless vocals, and backed by an inventive, heavy grooving fusion of Latin rhythms from Tato Bolognini on drums. The shining moments for the Silva brothers' Tambor playing are 'Candombelek' - a beautifully moody Afro-Uruguyan groove with characterful rhodes and vocal harmonies - and 'Candombe Alto', a carnival-esque track, awash with soaring synth lead, wah-wah guitar and pulsating keys.

Far Out Recordings are honoured to have had the opportunity to travel to Uruguay and work with a true hero of Latin American music. Hugo, his musicians and everyone at Sondor Studios welcomed us with open arms. We were overwhelmed not only by the musical brilliance we found in Montevideo, but also by the warmth and humility of everyone we met along the way.

Dinosaur L - 24 ->24 Music

Dinosaur L

24 ->24 Music

2x12inchTEG76530LPC
Traffic Ent. Group
09.08.2019

Dinosaur L is an alias donned by Arthur Russell, a man whose contribution to dance music from the late seventies and through the eighties was formidable but only quietly acknowledged. His innovative and left field dance records were way ahead of what people were used to hearing at the time. He was a cellist who studied classical and Indian music. As well as his great strides in dance music he was also involved in the New York downtown avant-garde music scene and produced some albums in a more avant-garde / experimental vein as well as trying his own unique approach to pop. He scored several hits on the underground New York dance scene at clubs like The Paradise Garage (Larry Levan was a huge supporter). His biggest tunes, 'Go Bang!' and 'Is It All Over My Face' were worldwide club hits and are still played today as classics. His records have influenced the scene from his first dance record in 1979 to the present day and his work has been much sampled. Sadly Arthur
died in 1992, but his music lives on and his influence is still felt on the dance music scene, his tunes still sound great and are still moving many dancers around the world, so his spirit lives on. Sleeping Bag Records and Traffic Entertainment Group is proud to present Dinosaur L's '24-24 Music' for the first time ever on double LP. Includes the original album tracklisting plus rare 12'remixes and edits.

Mohawkestra - Mo-Heavy

Mo-Heavy

7"-VinylRR005REED
REED Records
26.07.2019

Reed Records presents the fifth single from Mohawkestra ‘Mo Heavy’ b/w ‘Buffalo Bill’ available on 7” vinyl

Mo Heavy is the first Mohawkestra single to feature one of their original compositions as the A Side and it’s a belter! Replete with the signature Mohawkestra heavy organ working alongside driving guitar chops and the percussion gets plenty of time to shine.

As the a-side is a Mohawkestra original on this one the B-Side is ‘Buffalo Bill’ which is a rather unique funk fuelled take of ‘The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill’ from The Beatles’ White Album. The hint of the title and the melody are the only similarities though as Mohawkestra take the groove far out into the Funk spectrum and stripped back to raw elements.

Available on 7” vinyl

The fifth and final Mohawkestra 45 in this series for Reed, and for this final donut they have gone into the realms of soundtracks vibes, a lost 70s cop show theme immediately comes to mind. This is a wide open joint, a spaced-out arrangement with super tough drums n' bongo breaks that keeps building into a killer jerkin' funk burner, just needs a cop car's siren wailing at the end! Special mention to Joe Wilkins for the raw as **** guitar riffs, heavy stuff. All in all a wicked and furious 45 for B-Boys & B-Girls.

9th Creation - Love Crime

Love Crime

12inchPASTDUELP08
Past Due
16.07.2019

It is well known that talent never guarantees any success in the music industry. This sentence summarizes the story of The 9th Creation, one of the best soul, funk, disco and boogie band to make it out of Stockton, CA.

Founded by J.D. and A.D Burrise in 1970, the 9th Creation went on for almost two decades and released 3 albums and half a dozen singles that regularly flirted with the US Charts, getting them featured on Soul Train in 1975 and allowing them to tour North America and Japan a few times over. 9th Creation regularly shared the bill with Irma Thomas, James Brown, The Whispers, The Sylvers, The Main Ingredient, Con Funk Shun and many others.

The music that J.D, A.D Burrise and their 10-12 band members created was a perfect combination of West Coast raw soul, disco and funk that resulted in a religious fan following across the globe.
To this day, The 9th Creation has been sampled by Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Artifacts, Quasimoto, 3rd Bass, Basement Jaxx and many others.

9th Creation was undoubtedly one of the greatest funk band of the Seventies.

Past Due Records is proud to officially reissue the 9th Creation's essential full lengths and singles, carefully remastered and all in their original artworks. 'Love Crime' is a unicorn. As rare as 'Mellow Music', this mini LP is the absolute holy grail for west Coast boogie funk lovers. It is the final release from the band 18 years after their inception. 4 tracks of absolute bliss and the final attempt for 9th Creation to finally make it in the mainstream. Originals of this 12' have sold for silly money for a while, get it while you can....

SASSY J - ALTERED SOUL EXPERIMENT VOL 13

1

N. 13.. Sassy J steps up! (price goes up on this one too - sorry to say). For the 13th mix in this series, Sassy J finds inspiration in the “Fruit of Life,” a system of information found in Sacred Geometry. It consists of a structure of 13 circles that is said to contain the blueprint of the universe. Its 13th circle is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the network and, more widely, the universe. It acts as a gateway to higher dimensions and a catalyst for healing. The music in this mix exudes spirituality. As a constructed piece, it’s a tapestry that weaves together broadcasts, interludes, songs, and poems. Echoes of horns mingle with a distant message of the cosmos as Sassy J invites us into a world from which we do not want to leave. Indeed, it doubles up as a map that marks Sassy J’s place in a universe that is held together by her singular thread. The overriding mantra of "You gotta have freedom, you gotta have peace and love” marks the end of the musical journey and corresponds to the principle contained in the 13th sphere. It rings with poetic meaning and speaks to the values she espouses so uncompromisingly. What I have always admired most about Sassy J is her unwavering commitment to a musical vision. The music she invokes belongs to a Space Age of astral jazz explorations and sonic paths that lead to a higher state of consciousness. It is music that is born out of pain but which offers redemption; both serious and supremely uplifting. In the act of curation, Sassy J is proposing an alternative history, one where style isn't as important as leveraging meditative states and the spirit behind the sounds. Because Sassy J refuses to stay in one place and treats music as a set of recurring melodic shapes, the very texture of this mix is defined by transition, process, and flow. It seems to say that art is the only thing that exists beyond death. As a beam of sunshine floods through my window the music glistens out to the street beyond. Caught in a dance with the rays of sunlight, it reminds me of how music is a journey and a destination all of its own.

Gökhan Sürer Quartet - Chimera EP

This latest Rocafort EP is an exciting, international jazz affair stretching across time and continents. Consisting of musicians from Mexico, Serbia, Catalonia and Turkey, the Gökhan Sürer Quartet delivers a new perspective on the oriental jazz genre. Gökhan Sürer is a young Turkish pianist, composer and arranger whose musical education reaches from Istanbul, to NYC and currently Barcelona.

CHIMERA is like the soundtrack to a modern mythological journey across all sides of the Mediterranean and beyond. Anatolian magic is woven throughout the four titles, most of them filled with an elegant urgency and tension in the rhythmic composition with the intension of giving a modern jazz twist to Turkish and Armenian melodies along with elements of rock, funk and reggae.

This is possibly Rocafort's most 'mature' release to date, in the sense that, as with most jazz, it requires intense listening in order to get the most out of the musical journey and detail in the composition.

Limited to 300 copies!

Various - Brownswood 10 Versions

Brownswood are celebrating 10 years with a compilation of 10 cover versions — one for each year of its existence. Sourced from Brownswood artists past and present, it's testament to the independent label's diverse, multifarious legacy.

Brownswood 10 Versions is the first in a series of releases and events to mark a decade of releasing music for the independent label. A limited edition, vinyl-only release, it collects together versions from Brownswood artists — past and present — that re-make and re-imagine tracks.

Brownswood Recordings was born at a time which, in a strange way, was perfectly primed for independent record labels. Picture the scene — it's 2006, and record sales continue to plummet to new, dispiriting lows. The veterans of the music industry grapple to comprehend the new, depressing reality facing them. With such little money to be made, only the most dedicated — driven by sincere passion, ill-thought-out optimism and, frankly, a plain disregard for economic reality — would choose to start a record label.
It's into this environment which Brownswood emerged. Founded by Gilles Peterson, it followed his departure from iconic label Talkin' Loud, a subsidiary of major label Mercury, which championed artists ranging from Roni Size and 4hero to Omar. By 2006, however, Gilles felt increasingly stifled. As purse strings tightened in the major label world, he sought an outlet where he could freely support the varied, divergent musical currents which continued to pique his interest.

Starting with little fanfare, the label started slowly. Its first signings were as eclectic as you'd expect: Ben Westbeech's bass-weighted soul music, Soil & Pimp' Sessions' third album of (in their words) death jazz', followed by the delicate meditations of Elan Mehler's jazz quartet. Since then, the label's sonic trajectory has remained just as tough to pin down — from Mercury-nominated Ghostpoet's debut to Mala's re-configuring dubstep with Cuban sound system culture, it affirmed its place as a platform for artists to grow or do something different.

This collection of covers is the perfect vehicle for the ever restless, open-ended musical policy of the label. With a solid grounding in jazz, there's Emanative's beefed up Sun Ra stargazing (in a previously unreleased mix), Daymé Arocena's take on a Patrick Forge-discovered, latter-day Dingwalls classic and Soil & Pimp' Sessions' explosive version of Art Blakey.

Elsewhere, there's British-Kenyan outfit Owiny Sigoma Band's previously unreleased cover of Can's Vitamin C', reworking hazy krautrock with their nyatiti master Joseph Nyamungu. Mala's 'Cunumicita', meanwhile, sees the dubstep talisman re-framing one of Peru's traditional touchstones.

Edwin Birdsong - Cola Bottle Baby

An instantly recognisable intro that Daft Punk turned into one of their most well-known anthems, 'Harder Better Faster Stronger' - Edwin Birdsong's 'Cola Bottle Baby' is straight up insatiable, late '70s funk fire.

To think this was made nearly 40 years ago - it sounds as delicious as the day it was released and one of those classics that was way ahead of the game. It'd be hard to find anyone that doesn't feel some level of nostalgia in those opening 15 seconds, but not many would be able to name the original behind the sample.

A futuristic leaning jazz funk sound, in part created by the quacked-out bass synth and ringing ride cymbal but grounded in the grooving funk bass, twanging guitar and electrifying keys. An amalgamation of sounds from pop, disco and funk to jazz and electro, there's no denying Birdsong's talents - a flair that would lead him to collaborate with the mighty Roy Ayers.

On the B side, 'Freaky Deaky Sities' ramps up the tempo but carries on that mix of the futuristic and the funk - an ode to all the disco dancers out there. Talkbox business married with Birdsong and his backing's call and response, bongos and cowbells side by side with rock styled guitars, it's a pure power play for the dancefloor.

An underrated talent given a new lease of the life - officially, remastered and reissued for the first time on 12-inch vinyl for a fuller, louder pressing.

NICK BERLIN & MAX EROTIC - CLUB BELGIQUE VOLUME 1

The Belgian duo San Soda and Red D entered the world of recorded music some 12 years ago with the inception of Red D’s label We Play House Recordings. A few years later their collaboration continued in the studio with the start of the FCL project, leading to original and remixed club hits.

In the meantime both have gained considerable mileage and reputation as adventurous DJ’s who are not afraid to take risks and with a ‘no boundaries’-approach to playing music. Being Belgian they continue to find inspiration in Belgium’s rich music and clubbing history, which led to the ‘Our Beat Is Still New’ compilation in 2013 on We Play House Recordings. Both San Soda and Red D contributed some tracks and thus the aliases Nick Berlin and Max Erotic were born.

Fast forward to today and Club Belgique, a concept Red D has been brooding on for quite some time. A true tribute to Belgium’s club (music) heritage which consists of club nights and also a new label for fresh material by himself and San Soda in his Nick Berlin guise. This release brings you that new material in the form of two tracks situated between new beat, synth pop and italo disco. Long live Belgium!

THE TOASTERS - Ska Jerk

Ska Jerk

Tighten Up
28.02.2020

The link between Jamaican music and US Soul and Blues is of course very strong. I am a huge fan of Stax/Volt, Motown, Chess Records and contemporaries which I consider to be the bedrock of pop music and whereas everybody hears about the more obvious big band influences on SKA such as Duke Ellington, Louis Jordan, Boots Randolph, Louis Armstrong.....less people are aware of the link to soul and R+B artists like Chuck Berry, Etta James, King Curtis, Rosco Gordon and so on. The great Lester Sterling once told me that he based the whole idea of the horn chop (or "upchuck" as some people like to call it) on what the guitar player was doing on the Yakkety Sax track. If you listen to that you will definitely hear the ska beat,

All these songs were mixed by myself over the course of different project sessions. The Ska Jerk recording is actually post the DLTBGYD album sessions and was originally intended for a compilation project that eventually never came out, so that track has just been languishing in the Toaster vaults. At that time we had been hired to do quite a bit of film and TV scores as well as commercial jingles for the likes of Cisco, Coca Cola, AOL, Miller Beer, etc. and so the band was tight, often incorporating guest members from the greater NYC SKA massive and we were able to turn around a complete mix like that in just one day. The engineer on SKA JERK was George Evagelou who also worked with me on the Edna's Goldfish record.

Bibi "The Kid" Msomi - Colours Of The Rainbow

Remastered 6 song mini LP originally produced in the
mid-80s *very in-demand with funk record collectors and
DJs worldwide. Featuring 6 upbeat synth-driven, boogie
funk dance tracks *first officially licensed vinyl reissue*
Colours of the Rainbow contains the best 6 tracks from two rare South African LPs by recording artist Bibi
the Kid Msomi: 4 tracks from the 1985 album Searching, and 2 tracks from the 1986 LP What Kind of Love
is This?
South African funk music from the 80s has recently gained recognition as some of the best funk
productions in the world; yet so many titles remain virtually unknown outside of South Africa, especially
due to the scarcity of the original pressings (due in part to the destruction of any music perceived as
subversive by South African government censors at the time).
The level of musicianship on these recordings is simply world-class. Even Paul Simon was trying to work
with Bibi Msomi while recording his Graceland album in South Africa (read more about it in this exclusive
interview).
Combining American and South African funk influences, these 6 upbeat dance tracks feature popular
synths and drum machines of the day. The subversive lyrics and infectious grooves on these recordings
address the political turmoil during the peak Apartheid years in a way that was just subtle enough to slip
under the radar of stringent government music censors. Deep messages of freedom and universal
brotherhood are backed by some of South Africa's greatest musical talent, including:
Mac Mathunjwa (Street Kids, Neville Nash), Sello Mphatsoane (Bayete), The Hot Soul Singers, Cisco the
Champ Mokoena, Blackie Sibisi (Step Ahead, Brenda & The Big Dudes), Alistair Coakley (Hotline, Stimela),
Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Jantshi Mayo (Sipho Mabuse), Peter Mokoena (Pure Magic), Solly Ledwaba
(Juluka), Joey Mabe (Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens), Deborah Fraser (Brenda Fassie), Zamo
Mbutho, Banzi Kubheka (Banjo, CJB), Cyril Mnculwane (CJB), and Stimela vocalists: Marilyn Nokwe, Tu
Nokwe, Hlengiwe Maphumulo, Beaulah Hashe.
Meticulously re-mastered with love for maximum impact on the dancefloor; we hope you enjoy the
songs contained on this spiritual boogie masterpiece.

Chocolate Buttermilk Band - Head Games (The Story of Larry Akles & CBM Records)

Founded by Larry Akles in 1971 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, The Chocolate Buttermilk Band, has been one of the busiest and most successful cover and backing bands in the Southern United States for the last 5 decades.
While they’re little known outside the region, their handful of singles from the early 1980s are, for record collectors, among the best and most desirable in Modern Soul and Boogie Funk.

Jerome Derradji & Past Due Records are proud to present “Head Games (The Story of Larry Akles & CBM Records)”. Released on a DLP / CD with printed inner sleeves (or booklet) that include never seen before pictures of the band and a story written by Jacob Arnold. Artwork is by the mighty Al Kent. As a companion to the compilation we are also reissuing the incredibly rare and sought after “Head Games” 7” with a picture sleeve.

This compilation includes every song released by the Chocolate Buttermilk Band, remastered and reissued for the first time.

Needless to say, this is an essential release for fans of Boogie, Soul and Funk as the Chocolate Buttermilk Band releases are known to fetch thousands in the collectors market.

In Larry Akles own words, “This girl in Atlanta told me one time, she said ‘Larry, I heard on the radio that Chocolate Buttermilk was going to be on the show, and I told my girlfriend, Oh, it’s gonna be onnnn if Chocolate Buttermilk on there, ’cause whoever come behind them, they got to go!’” He continues, “When we hit the stage, boy it’d be some fire. We wouldn’t have to get warmed up. We’d start off hot!”

Family Tree Ft. Sharon Brown - Family Tree

July 26th sees the timely reissue of the OST Recordings 7-inch of Family Tree’s rare groove dance Family Tree. This mid-70s recording by the group Family Tree, was made on a tour and sneaked out on the tiny Ananda label probably without singer and group leader Sharon Brown’s permission. In the intervening years it became a UK club floor filler and a firm favourite of DJ Norman ‘Fatboy Slim’ Cook.

OST - a legal re-edits label, was the brainchild of Frank Tope, Dean Marsh, Bruce Sandell and Dean Rudland - tracked down Sharon, and released it on 12 inch, with a remix by Norman and on 7Inch with a bonus beats remix created by Tope & Rudland. With both long deleted and OST now operating out of Acid Jazz towers, we have decided to bring the 7 inch back to life, whilst Norman’s big beat work-out is now available digitally.
