Bill Brown & The Soul Injection - Time after Time/inst

Bill Brown and Al Hall jr met around 1971, they were both in south central L.A and shared the same apartment building, also in the same building was Doug Carn and brownstone singer billy Wilson.
These studio sessions were don't at Paramount studios Hollywood where Al Hall jr was working for producer Art Smith a&c music.
The main distributor for A&C was Accent records. So the Soul Injections very first single "Stay off the moon" was released via Accent, as was Bill Browns "Bip Bam" The group wasn't that pleased with how Accent handle the releases so Bill took it upon himself to set up his own label called Brownstone records. Many musicians were called in for studio sessions these included
Doug Carn, organ; Kirk Lightsey, keyboards; Mel Bolton,
guitars; Mel Lee, drums; Al Hall jr (trombones), Willaim 'Bill'Henderson strings.
The label was met with some confrontation from other Hollywood labels and many of the Brownstone releases were told not to hit the shops by Mafia run labels. Later around 1975 Brownstone released a track by Everyday people feat Alexis "world full of people"....A now cult soul 45 ....But wait, we at Super disco edits have unearthed the original tapes with the very first incarnation of that song and music, different lyric content and sung by Bill Brown. Not just this you get the instrumental on the b side!!

Mr. K - The Funk Box Edits by Mr. K

5x 7" Box Set + 2x 7" Slipmats

A defining characteristic of Danny Krivit's DJ sets has always been the strong elements of funk he threads throughout. Indeed, at the height of the pop-disco craze in the late '70s Krivit was sometimes criticized as being too funky' for incorporating tunes from the likes of War and James Brown in his sets, going against the grain of the stiff and sanitized fare that filled the playlists of mainstream jocks. Ironically, it was exactly this funky flavor that allowed his style to survive and thrive, a direct throwback to the vibes that originally gave birth to disco and, even as tempos accelerated and styles changed, continue to be the beating heart beneath the most powerful dancefloor movers.

This upcoming box set from Most Excellent Unlimited taps into that primal sound with ten funky sureshots from Mr. K's crates, each edited by the master for maximum effect. From sultry mood-setters to breakbeat headnodders to bouncy proto-disco, Krivit has laid out a powerful palette that stands as both a treasure trove of digger's delights and a collection of perfect party-starters. Spread over five seven-inches and packaged in a handsome bespoke box, this extremely limited package will be available May 2018 just delayed post Record Store Day. The first 75 units will include two high quality felt 7" Mr. K slipmats.

WYNDER K. FROG - SUNSHINE SUPER FROG

· First ever vinyl reissue
· Limited edition to 500 copies only
· Bonus tracks not on the original LP
· Remastered sound
· Insert with liner notes by Nick Rossi and photos
· Beautifully housed in three back-flapped 1960s UK style picture sleeve!

The Wynder K. Frog story evolves around Mick Weaver. After he switched from piano to organ he joined a band named The Chapters that would soon be renamed Wynder K. Frog and perform material from James Brown's Flames, Booker T. and The MGs or even songs learned through Georgie Fame's recordings and Graham Bond's repertoire. Wynder K. Frog moved to London and became regulars in the city's R&B scene playing at Swingin' London's clubs like the Tiles or The Marquee. A contract with Island Records was secured and -under the wings of producers like Chris Blackwell, Guy Stevens, Jimmy Miller or Gus Dudgeon- Wynder K Frog, a name that would eventually be used as a pseudonym for Weaver more than a proper band name, did some some amazing Hammond organ-ized recordings and issued in three LPs and a bunch of cool 45s.

At the end of the 1960s, Weaver would quit the "band scene" to become one of the most in demand session musicians and throughout his career he'd be heard backing names such as Eric Burdon, Roger Chapman, Dave Gilmour, Keef Hartley, Alexis Korner, Ralph McTell, Taj Mahal or Otis Rush a.o, but his LPs as Wynder K Frog are classic Hammond sound from the 1960s UK and will appeal to those into Brian Auger, Graham Bond, The Artwoods, Zoot Money, Jimmy McGriff, Booker T. & The MGs and the likes.

SUNSHINE SUPER FROG

Recorded mostly in 1966 and issued in 1967, Wynder K Frog's first LP came out of sessions produced by Chris Blackwell, Jimmy Miller and Syd Dale. Weaver was assuming more and more the identity of Wynder K Frog and was backed by session musicians rather than by his live band. It consisted in organ led instrumental covers of songs from the Island catalogue, some built over rejected backing tracks for other artists of the label like Jimmy Cliff, Jackie Edwards and Owen Gray and some new recordings of hits like Spencer Davis Group's "Somebody Help Me", plus some covers of american R&B hits by the likes of Sam & Dave, Willie Mitchell or Wilson Pickett. The end result gave an idea of the Wynder K Frog sound, resulting in a top mix of dance club go-go sounds, perfect for any allnighter at the Tiles or any Swingin' London venue of the 1960s.

Lack of Afro - Jack Of All Trades

Never one to be constrained by musical genres, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Adam Gibbons (aka Lack of Afro) has taken it up several notches with his sixth studio record 'Jack of All Trades', a multi-genre tour de force that combines soul, funk, hip-hop, disco, rock and everything in-between, all wrapped up in his signature chunky production to create arguably his finest work to date.

The album is blessed with some incredible vocal performances. Regular collaborator Elliott Cole, Nick Corbin (formally of New Street Adventure), ex I Am Giant vocalist Ed Martin, Wax & Herbal T, Alyssa Marie, Camila Recchio, Juliette Ashby & Emma Noble are all on scintillating form on an album that is crammed full of infectious hooks, top musicianship, and more importantly, vibe by the bucketload!

Classic soul ('Back To The Day', 'Reach Out'), hip-hop ('Back In Business', 'Take It Up A Notch'), disco ('Only You & Me'), rock ('Over & Out'), modern soul ('Baby Be Mine'), folk ('Home') and a healthy dose of funk ('The Messin' Around Intermission', 'Good Love'), all combine to create an album that is stuffed with gorgeous phonic gems of all varieties and represents a definite step up from anything he has done before.

Packed full of beautiful horns and lush strings (and all recorded onto tape through a 1970's mixing desk), 'Jack of All Trades' is Adam doing what he does best and then some - blending the old and new to come up with a crossover classic that's entirely his own, whilst all the while ensuring that the songwriting takes centre stage.

Lack of Afro continues to go from strength to strength. 2016's 'Hello Baby' picked up a BBC 6 Music 'Album Of The Year' nomination & appeared in the Top 10 of the iTunes R&B / Soul chart in 21 countries worldwide.

His music also continues to be in high demand across all aspects of film & TV by networks such as ABC, Fox, NBC, Sony Pictures & the BBC. More recently he has signed to licensing label A Remarkable Idea, an imprint of Universal Music alongside artists such as Maximo Park, Pulled Apart By Horses, Alt J & label boss Benson Taylor. A remix of his 2011 song 'P.A.R.T.Y' by French duo Ofenbach (released on Warner Music in March) is all set to be one of 2018's tracks of the year, whilst his debut album 'Press On' (2007) has just been given 'classic' status by Future Music Magazine.

'Jack of All Trades' is supported by a live band UK tour in May & also at various festivals throughout the summer.

Pat Kalla & Le Super Mojo - Combattant

Favorite Recordings proudly presents Combattant, first EP by Pat Kalla produced by Bruno Patchworks' Hovart (aka VOILAAA).

PAT KALLA is a musician, singer and storyteller. Patrice of his birth name, in tribute to the great Lumumba! Lover of words, French language, and music of course. Born in Lyon, from a Cameroonian father, musician and political activist, and a French and literary mother, he explores from his childhood the Soul, the Slam, the Funk ... and the art of telling stories, life being a great one...

After years of touring alongside many bands (Conte & Soul, Legend of Eboa King, Mento Cloub, Voilaaa Sound System), and several acclaimed titles on the two albums by Voilaaa, he comes back with this project to put a bit of primordial lightness in a rainy world: A tribute to the African culture in honor of a father with "Sawa" origins, the tribe from the people of Makossa.

Jojo Ngallé, Moni Bilé, Pain, Manu Dibango, Franco, Rochereau, Kabaselé, Fela, François Nkotti & The Black Style, all these legends' vinyls have turned on the family turntable and the collection has whetted the child's appetite. Through this new trip, he revisits styles that are sometimes little known to Western audiences, such as High-Life, Makossa, Angolan Music, Afrobeat, Afro-Disco and others. We could talk about Franc CFA', we could talk about Jacques Foccart, but we will rather dance, because "the dancer seems naive, but his feet must be connected with earth to understand history..."

Backed by the "Super Mojo Disco", a hyperactive band from Lyon with deep groove and positive energy, Pat Kalla offers us an anti-crisis project, where swaying and feel-good humor is mandatory! An album soon in the crates, beware « c'est médicament » (it's medicine)!!

THE BIG HUSTLE - TIME TRAVELLER
  • A1: Turn Uo
  • A2: A Curse, A Blessing
  • A3: Flying Donut
  • B1: The Star Of A Story
  • B2: Gettin' To The Good Part
  • B3: Gimme Dat

Word of advice to funk lovers; there is not a minute to lose. Get on board of the Big Hustle's spaceship. Before we take off, let's do a little history. The band was founded in 2014 by bass player and composer Sébastien Levanneur and its aim is to bring together 70's old school funk with the hippest actual sound laced with influences spanning from Steely Dan and Headhunters, to Snarky Puppy and Soulive. With mighty horn players, a rock and funky rhythm section, the Big Hustle's music has a very large variety of soundscapes. The first destination takes us to the Washington, D.C. area with 'Turn Up'. The groove is clearly go-go music flavored with the trademark sound of cowbells and of course it reminds us of Zapp by the use of the talk box on lead vocals, performed here by Saad El Garrab. And don't miss out Shaun Martin (Snarky Puppy, Erykah Badu, Kirk Franklin amongst others) as a very special guest performing the talk box solo! Second stop is 'A Curse, A Blessing'. It's an instrumental very much in the Freddie Hubbard vein during his CTI years. The last leg of the A side ends with an instrumental interlude titled 'Flying Donut'. Double tribute to Jay Dee and Flying Lotus, the music is a simple hip hop loop based on samples. The B side takes us back into the past with two brilliant covers, involving Rod Temperton the late great British songwriter who scored some of Michael Jackson's biggest hits. Now the idea for this B side is to do the opposite approach from the A side. Taking 70's and 80's original music and make them travel into time to 2018. We first land with a Heatwave song named 'The Star Of A Story' from their 1976 Central Heating album. Track 2 is a Herbie Hancock song named 'Gettin' To The Good Part' from his 1982 Lite Me Up LP. This Time Traveler EP journey ends with an interlude. Called 'Gimme Dat', the song deals with the need of new music, new sound.Again, this blend of deep rooted funk laced with a contemporary edge is to be consumed without moderation. And do not forget that E.P. also stands for extended pleasure.

THE SCENE CLUB - VARIOUS ARTISTS: CLUB SOUL

THE SCENE CLUB HAM YARD, LONDON 1963-66 - THE ORIGINAL SOUND OF NORTHERN SOUL, POPCORN AND R&B FEATURING SONGS NOT ON THE CD EDITION

'The Scene Club was red hot, the hottest little club in London... and in 1963 London was the centre of the world - even if the rest of the world didn't know it quite yet.' - Norman Jopling (Record Mirror).

The club in Ham Yard, off Great Windmill Street, in Soho, central London had previously been a jazz club, but by 1963 it had become a revered mod venue, playing soul, R&B, blues, ska and rock'n'roll records to a sharply dressed crowd.

This new to vinyl compilation collects some of the classic tracks played there at the time. The 16 cuts include gems from Alvin Robinson, The Dixie Cups, Chris Kenner and Bessie Banks, first time reissued on vinyl from remastered original

analogue tapes. It is presented on 180g heavyweight audiophile vinyl in a single LP packaging.

Various - A Look into the Evasion Disques Vaults: 1970-1973

Rocafort Records digs into the 'Evasion Disques' catalaogue to bring you the best in Funk, Soul, Psych & Folk from the legendary Swiss label.

Linernotes and comments of the songs by Evasion Disques' co-founders.
Artwork by Laurent Pizzotti, the graphic designer to whom we owe a large number of Evasion Records sleeve covers.
All songs taken from the original master tapes.

Evasion Records was born of a rebellious 60's rock band, "Les (Faux) Frères", who got tired of being forced by their record company to cover British hits rather than record their own compositions.

Along with their pianist Eric Christen, and a childhood friend François Vautier, Gaston Schaefer and Jean-Pierre Skawronski embarked on the adventure of composing and producing their own work as of their 7th EP.

Extending the experience further, the group then created its own label,"Evasion Disques" (as in, escaping from the big record companies). The first single was distributed by Barclay Switzerland, managed at the time by a Swiss musician who was all too keen to welcome in this new label.

Less than a month later, local artists, friends of the group and acquaintances who knew of their initiative, turned up at the small office in Avenue du Théâtre in Lausanne with the desire to record for the new company.

Philly's Instant Funk are one of Salsoul's most well-known and respected groups. Appearing on the legendary TSOP label in 1976 the outfit was renowned for their ultra-tight musicianship and for backing Disco icon Bunny Sigler as his group. The late 1970's saw them sign to NYC's Salsoul label and this is the point where this compilation comes to life. 'I got my mind made up' was the groups opening shot on Salsoul and was a huge hit for them, helped in part by a super long, stripped back and funked out remix by Paradise Garage jock Larry Levan. This track and a whole host of others feature on this amazing compilation and snapshot of one of Disco's toughest rhythm sections, boasting all their hits and some stellar mixes from Levan, Tom Moulton, John Morales, Francois Kevorkian, Shep Pettibone and more! This whole selection features the mixes in their 12" glory, unedited, end to end, as intended.

A truly essential package for the die-hard Disco aficionado or for those who are exploring this most important movement in dance music for the first time. Shake - Music Is The Only Way We Can Communicate

The group Shake was the brainchild of the elusive soul and funk singer/producer Lenis Guess from Norfolk, Virginia. It is now considered one of the great overlooked funk bands of the late 70s Virginia scene - a tight little combo with a warm style that's just right for the dancefloor! The VA groove of the time was a different take on the styles being used up north in Philly and New York - as the groups were often more traditionally funk-based, especially in their instrumentation - but played in a mode that was upbeat and soaring, perfectly suited for the disco-era dancefloor, yet handled with the sincerity of an indie soul group. Shake communicate a heck of a lot in their music - moving through some great original tunes written by producer Lenis Guess, done with some nicely personal touches that maintain the indie spirit of the set, even though the group's overall sound is tightly professional. Originally released on Guess records, it includes the Kon & Amir favourite 'Lost In Space', but the whole album is just great.

Soul Jazz Records Presents - YORUBA!

YORUBA!

2x12inchSJRLP399
Soul Jazz Records
12.06.2018

Soul Jazz Records' latest album 'Yoruba! Songs and Rhythms for the Yoruba Gods in Nigeria' is newly recorded in Lagos, Nigeria. The album is co-produced by Soul Jazz Records label head Stuart Baker and Laolu Akins (founding member of the legendary 1970s Nigerian Afro-Funk/Rock group Blo). Yoruba! features an array of local master drummers led by Olatunji Samson Sotimirin and singers (featuring the lead vocals of Janet Olufanmilayo Abe) performing heavyweight Afro-rhythms, with talking drums, Bata and Dundun drums and a mass of percussion in these deep spiritual and sacred songs used to honour and worship the traditional and ancient Yoruba gods in Nigeria, West Africa.
The enormous impact of Yoruba and West African music and culture is worldwide - from the first Afro-centric explorations of African-American jazz musicians in the 1950s such as Art Blakey, Randy Weston and Dizzy Gillespie, the explosion of Nu Yorican Latin music in New York City starting in the 1960s - Mambo, Boogaloo, Latin funk and soul - through to the sacred and powerful Afro-derived music of the religions of Santería in Cuba, Candomblé in Brazil and Voodoo in Haiti, which all came into existence on account of the Atlantic slave trade which began over 400 years ago. On a wider scale West African music remains the primary root of all African-American musical forms - from New Orleans jazz to Bronx rap, gospel, soul and more.
This album features songs honouring the Nigerian gods of the Yoruba traditional religion - Yemoja, Obatala, Ogun, Sango and others - as well as a selection of instrumental cuts focussing on the Bata and Dundun drums. The album comes complete with extensive text and photography included in the 40-page outsize booklet/gatefold double vinyl + inners showing the influence of Yoruba culture throughout the world and the social and historical context for the music contained here.
Watch out for a limited edition remix of the project by Osunlade, also forthcoming on Soul Jazz Records.

Smoove & Turrell - You're Gone / A Deckham Love Song

Smoove & Turrell return with the first new single from their forthcoming album 'Mount Pleasant' - a storming double-A side with disco cut - 'You're Gone' and the gorgeous and ironic 'A Deckham Love Song'.

From the moment John Turrell heard label mate Izo FitzRoy's debut album "Skyline" he knew they had to work together and started adapting a song he was working on "You're Gone" with her in mind.

The result is an absolute ear worm of uplifting chic style instrumentation combined with haunting lyrics - disco dynamite delivered with feeling as John & Izo's vocals perfectly encapsulate the balance of frustration, pride and vulnerability present in a lovers argument.

The flipside is the undeniably pretty 'A Deckham Love Song' - a smooth slice of sublime songwriting with a Richard Hawley-esque tongue-in-cheek look back at a childhood spent in Deckham. The beautiful and sentimental imagery conjured up in the lyrics and tasteful musical arrangement inspired by Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka, ironically offsets the subject matter of a childhood growing up on an estate in the North East of England.

Aotearoa. New Zealand, nineteen seventy something. Bottom of the South Pacific - the largest Maori and Polynesian population in the world and ... a nation wanting to groove.
Approx 3 million people. Two islands, hot summers , muddy winters, one tv channel till 1975 and all radio was AM. Cantankerous (and sometimes not so sobre) Prime Minister Rob Muldoon was in his pomp, the economy was in the toilet, and rugby (a national sport and in many parts of NZ , a religion) was a mess played in a mud bath ... the people had to dance!
A constant supply of international soul, funk, and disco releases were available for local issue through the major labels , but things got really interesting when local artists found their soul on vinyl.

Colour, clothes and sex began seeping onto the dance floors, while back at home kids watching music clips on television were turning to their parents: Is that a boy or a girl' New Zealand would never be the same again. A new generation was taking over and they wanted to boogie.
This new group of faces were taking to the dance floors. People like Mr Funky, people who'd stepped out in style and wanted to get down with their own bad self. A funky revolution was brewing with bands that'd been mired in the middle ground now swerving into sounds more suited to the disco than a rugby club social. Other bands were emerging from cabaret and had shifted from being the show to creating the show.
These then are the songs that drove a country from black and white to technicolour, and being a scene born in total isolation it took turns that weren't heard anywhere else.
This is funk, soul and disco as it would've sounded if Studio 54 had been set up within five minutes of a dairy farm, a rugby club and a marae, and if nothing else it finally let people to dance because they simply wanted to.

Heed The Call! collects the best New Zealand material from the afrotastic days of 1973 to 1983. Artists like Mark Williams whose House For Sale became a sought after northern Soul single, The (three) Yandall Sisters (two of whom are pictured behind Mark WiIlliams on our cover), a teenage Tina Cross, Dalvanius & Prince Tui Teka, all became household names in NZ. The collection mines some overlooked nuggets from their respective catalogues alongside lesser known boogie cuzzins The Pink Family with their non-secular floor sizzler Don't Give Your Life Away, the gritty gospel soul of Sonia & Skee, The Johnny Rocco Band, Inbetweens, and The Totals. The Kaukau brothers were four fifths of Golden Harvest who hit the national charts with the number one I Need Your Love in 1978 which featured new addition 17 year old Karl Gordon fronting the band. Local 60s beat pioneer Larry Morris fresh out of the big house after a public LSD misdemeanour finds his groove on Who Do We Think We're Fooling. Funk dynamos Collision hail from Tokoroa, and in an earlier incarnation were known as The Shriek Machine, move to Australia on Dalvanius's insistence to record the showstopper You Can Dance. Early 70s Acid Rockers Ticket flaunt their funky flare(s) with their Vertigo single only release Mr Music (later covered by Collision) , and the windy city jazzmen The 1860 Band take form fitting self promoting t-shirts to the next level while re- interpreting Rita Jean Bodine's Thats The Kind Of Love

Kamal Keila

2x12inchHABIBI008-1
HABIBI FUNK RECORDS
10.04.2025

Songs about the unity of Sudan, peace between Muslims and Christians and the fate of war orphans, backed by grooves equally taking influence from Arabic sounds, American funk as well as neighboring Ethiopia.

Kamal Keila was among the first artist we met in Sudan during our two trips to Khartoum and Omdurman last year. He is one of the key figures of the Sudanese jazz scene that was a vital part of the musical culture in Sudan from the mid 1960s until the islamist revolution in the late 1980s. When we meet Kamal he luckily presented us with two mold covered studio reels.
Each tape included five tracks. One with English lyrics and another with Arabic ones. Musically you can hear the influence of neighboring Ethiopia much more than on other Sudanese recordings of the time, as well as references to Fela and American funk and soul. His lyrics, at least when he sings in English which gave him more freedom from censorship, are very political. A brave statement in the political climate of Sudan of the last decades, preaching for the unity of Sudan, peace between Muslims and Christians and singing the blues about the fate of war orphans called "Shmasha".
A note inside one of the boxes specified the track titles, durations and the fact that the sessions were recorded on the 12th of august 1992. Both sessions stand as a hearable testament how Kamal Keila stuck to a sound aesthetic from decades ago, while incorporating current events into his lyrics.
Kamal Keila's album is the first in a series of releases covering the Sudanese jazz scene on Habibi Funk. Be on the lookout for albums by The Scorpions and Sharhabeel coming soon.

The Beginning Of The End - Funky Nassau The Complete Recordings

Strut presents the definitive reissues of two all-time classic Caribbean soul and funk albums, The Beginning Of The End's 'Funky Nassau' (1971) and 'Beginning Of The End' (1976).

Emerging from Nassau in the Bahamas in 1971, the band was formed around the Munnings brothers (Ray, Leroy and Frank) and the first song they recorded, 'Funky Nassau', became a No. 1 Billboard R'n'B hit, selling over a million copies. We wanted to create something new,' remembers Ray Munnings, something that was truly Bahamian. We loved funk but wanted to include elements of junkanoo, the indigenous music of The Bahamas.' An album was written within a week and recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami. We brought in more Bahamian themes, like 'Monkey Tamarind', a wild fruit that grows there.'

By the time of their second album in 1976, the band was managed by Don Taylor, also Bob Marley's manager. Don took us to Byron Lee's studio in Jamaica and used Teddy Randazzo (Little Anthony & The Imperials) to direct the sessions,' recalls Munnings. He gave us more of an uptempo jazz funk sound with Chicago-style horns.' The album led to a run of incredible bad luck. Booked to support Marvin Gaye's 'What's Goin' On' tour, the US Musicians Union stepped in and ordered a US group to fill the slot. They were then added onto a major Bob Marley tour in 1976 before he injured his foot, cancelling all dates.

These definitive official reissues of 'Funky Nassau' and 'Beginning Of The End' are remastered by The Carvery from original tapes and feature full length tracks from the studio sessions. Both albums feature a history of the albums and the band by vocalist Ray Munnings, alongside rare photos. 'Beginning Of The End' appears on loudpress 2LP for the first time. The CD edition features both albums + all extra singles recorded by the band.

Ernie Hawks & The Soul Investigators - Cold Turkey Time

The world has barely recovered from the previous sting of the Scorpio Man, when he lands in another dose. "Cold Turkey Time" from Ernie Hawks' debut album gets a single treatment here arriving back to back with the 45 only track "Tracking Down". The latter should make the b-boys move even if heard in the relaxing steams of a Turkish bath, where its breezy melodies eventually point at.

"Cold Turkey Time" is a serious slab of jazzy funk that shares many of the exotica qualities of its partnering side. It might sound nice, while driving a fine European sports mobile down on a spiraling mountain road, preferably in a 60's dandy state of mind. The eerie wordless vocals at the end tie the package together so nicely that Dario Argento could have made a scene out of it.

The continental vibes emanating from this vinyl single are bound to appeal to rare groove fanatics and secret agents alike. Ernie Hawks and his merry bunch of professionals are on a mean streak here, so keep listening.
