Etta James live at the Chicago Blues Festival, Grant Park on 7th June 1985

Etta James needs no introduction to lovers of soul, blues and R&B. Her long career began way back in the 1950s, and she was a legend by the age of 21. Thereafter she experimented with funk and rock, and toured with the Rolling Stones in 1978, but sank into drug addiction and alcoholism. Originally broadcast on WXRT-FM, this superb set captures her on terrific form, performing a selection of her best-loved songs in front of a delighted crowd, and is presented here together with background notes and images.

Heatwave - The Mike Maurro Remixes Vol. 2 (the Groove Line / Always And Forever)

Following on from the first part of Heatwave remixes, Mike Maurro digs deep into this legendary groups catalogue to bring us another duo of stellar reworkings. This time their Jazz-Funk classic 'The Groove Line' from 1977 gets the MM remix treatment and is backed with their evergreen slow-jam 'Always And forever'. 2 deeper cuts this time but the quality is just as high as Maurro really understands this music and knows what to use and how. Fans of Heatwave will undoubtedly adore these new mixes and people who are new to the group will be amazed they hadn't checked out the legendary Mr. Rod Temperton and his super talented pan-European band of musicians before! Naturally, everyone is welcome to this party....
Another amazing addition from Brookside Records to the ever growing archive of classic Disco, Funk & Soul treats that we, as music lovers, are lucky to experience. Much care and love has been taken with these new mixes, and new life has been breathed into Heatwave's music. Both mixes utilise some previously unheard studio ad-libs and instrumentation to fantastic effect, shining some new light on tracks that are engraved in the psyches of millions of dancers, DJ's and music lovers, no mean feat, but Mike Maurro pulls it off beautifully.
Again, Brookside bring us another set of cult Disco cuts reworked beautifully for 2017's ears, essential stuff for all lovers of this kind of music, this release is simply unmissable. The record comes with lovingly reworked Heatwave artwork and these remixes are exclusive to this release and are fully, 100% legit, licensed and sanctioned by all relevant rights holders.
Simply put, another set of essential mixes from a modern day master!

Black Ivory was the pride of Harlem - and New York's answer to the Philly-Fine Delfonics - but with innitely more teen sex appeal. This silky-smooth 70s harmony trio featured the fabulous falsetto lead of Leroy Burgess (nephew of Philly soul legend, Thom Bell) and charted four top-40 R&B singles and two top-30 LPs under the guiding hand of their manager and TODAY records' driving force, Patrick Adams. Songs like, You and I', Time is Love' and Don't Turn Around' (which they performed live on Soul Train) are acknowledged Sweet Soul classics. And as the decade progressed and tastes changed, they successfully conquered the disco dance-oors with fave-raves like, Mainline' and Walking Downtown (Saturday Night) for BUDDAH records - which were liberally sampled by the Hip-Hop generation - a true testament to the staying power of their incessantly soulful sound.

Lion - You've Got A Woman

Lion

You've Got A Woman

7"-VinylES63
Numero Group
21.11.2017

Lion—and the mean ecstasy of You've Got A Woman,' the B-side to their sole release—comprise a rare burst of psychedelic-Western soul from two names best known for Dutch progressive rock and new wave. Drummer Peter de Leeuwe, departing from the symphonic leanings of Dutch prog-fixtures Ekseption, penned it in 1975, layering syncopated explosions of hand-claps, vibraslap and slick drumwork with neutron-star density, with super-producer Hans van Hemert nearly bursting Glenn Robles' vocals through the fore. The Shoes Subtle Edit' provides exactly that, gently teasing the organ- and requintohinted contours of the track to better suit the treasure within. Chicago-based septet Whitney have brought some attention to You've Got A Woman' with a recent cover, and the faith with which they recreate much of the original instrumentation proves the extent of Lion's accomplishment.

Melodies
01.08.2017

A few years ago, Melodies family members Floating Points and DJ Red Greg got their hands on a couple of original 70s obscurities. While these standout records shone brightly in their own right, the two DJs saw the potential to create their own edits behind the scenes, finely attuning the original versions to modern-day dancefloor standards. Of these new recordings, they cut only five copies for themselves and a few DJ friends of theirs.

Today, Melodies International is very proud to bring you MEL006 and MEL007. Fully licensed, lovingly mastered to the highest possible standards and carefully edited to dial up that dancefloor enjoyment, these two 'You're A Melody' classics weren't originally meant to get official releases. But due to popular request, they are now available to play and share in very special moments at parties around the world.

Ramon Morris - Sweet Sister Funk LP

From the mid to late 60’s Sonny Lester was at the helm of some of the period’s most significant jazz music (Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, Chick Corea, Duke Ellington’s 70th birthday concert) and also some of the genre’s biggest hits (mostly from organist Jimmy Mcgriff). With the folding of the Solid State label in 1971 Sonny Lester formed the aptly named Groove Merchant label (named after the tune Jerome Richardson wrote for the Jones-Lewis Orchestra). He then produced some of the periods most notable soul/jazz, jazz/fusion from the likes of McGriff, Richard Groove Holmes, Reuben Wilson, Lonnie Smith to name but a few.

Leroy Hutson - Anthology 1972 - 1984

Leroy Hutson

Anthology 1972 - 1984

2x12inchAJX2LP419
ACID JAZZ
06.12.2017

Acid Jazz are pleased to announce details of the definitive Leroy Hutson compilation - Anthology : 1972-1984 on 20th October. Erstwhile Impression, Leroy Hutson's catalogue has become increasingly coveted over the years and this compilation collects his Curtom recordings together with two newly discovered tracks including Positive Forces which is available as an instant grat track when pre-ordering the album.

Native of Newark New Jersey, Leroy Hutson grew up In a part of the world that spawned many of Soul's all-time groups, amongst them, The Parliaments and the Manhattens. Smitten by the music he was to join a local quartet, The Nu-Tones and despite never recording the youthful Hutson experienced the thrill of being a singer. On splitting up, Hutson found himself studying in Washington DC and once more in the company of supremely talented artists including Carla Thomas and future collaborator Don Hathaway. Various recordings came and went with little chart success before, along with Hathaway he became central to a group of singer, songwriters and players under the tutelage of Curtis Mayfield at his Curtom label a relationship that initiated Hathaway's chart topping career when the pair co wrote the all-time classic and million seller The Ghetto.

Early 1971 saw Hutson replace Mayfield in the Impressions as he left to concentrate on his solo career, the transition was seamless and although relatively brief saw the band in the pop and R&B charts. His debut on the Billboard chart as a solo artist arrived with Love Oh Love, the first of a dozen Curtom singles he recorded during an exciting and turbulent decade for black American music.

The seven albums Hutson released on Curtom between 1973 and 1979 are a legacy that remain highly respected, almost revered amongst soul cognoscenti, an untold influence on an entire generation of musicians throughout the eighties. The demise of Curtom in the early eighties saw Hutson relocate to Elektra, where in 1982 he released Paradise - highly acclaimed and much loved for a time it looked like that release may spell the end but some twenty-seven years later, the newly monikered 'Lee' Huston unveiled Soothe You Groove You.

Mr. O.T. Sykes is often and fondly called 'The Singing Dentist' but it's far from a joke. Dr. Sykes, who till this day never gave up his day job, chooses to do only top quality music. He will not sell out to an already overcrowded pop-market as this extremely well respected and very soulful LP from 1981 so eloquently proves. Within an international circle of connoisseurs O.T.Sykes ranks among the very best of soul singers. This is true soul music to the max and is written, played and produced by Jeffrey Singleton (The Frat / Frat Band / Autofrat) and Mr. Sykes himself, plus the cream of the rich music scene in Memphis, TN. Original copies are now really hard to come by so this long overdue and most carefully prepared reissue is more than welcome. - Marc Janssen

The Allergies' debut album introduced the world to the way they effortlessly fuse funk, soul, disco, hip-hop and breaks into dancefloor-ready nuggets of ear candy. Taking classic sounds and reshaping for the modern age is the signature that won them plaudits across the globe.

Not ones to rest on their laurels, it hasn't taken long for them to deliver more of the goods on their second full-length album, 'Push On'. As well as taking the successful formula of the first record and expanding on the sound with raw Funk, Psych, Northern Soul, and Boogie influences, The Allergies enlisted two giants of underground Hip-Hop to bless mics on the album as well.

After a hugely successful collaboration on their debut LP, once again the dynamic lyricism and production skills of the inimitable Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) are present and correct in this new collection. Besides bringing the party on tracks like 'Main Event', he also settles scores with 'It Won't Be Me', before destroying all-comers on the battle Rap behemoth, 'Buzzsaw'. Also joining in on the action is UK MC veteran, Dr Syntax (The Mouse Outfit, Foreign Beggars) who prescribes some more healthy Hip-Hop advice on the track 'Remedy'.

Other highlights include the vintage Soul stomper, 'Entitled to That', Sixties uptempo groover, 'Hold You Close', and the fantastic little strutter, 'Get Down On You'. All in all it's a brand new set of future classics from your new favourite funky beatmakers, The Allergies.

The Andy Tolman Cartel - Cypher

For decades, if you wanted to listen to great music all you needed to do was stare at a screen! TV and film soundtracks were often the work of US legends such as Lalo Schiffrin, Oliver Nelson & Quincy Jones, and their Uk counterpartsRonnie Hazelhurst and Alan Hawkshaw, provided the soundtrack to the 60's & 70's at a time when film and TV music was unashamedly funky and featured the ensemble of choice for the jazz arranger.. the big band!

A 21st century musician with comparable skills is Andy Tolman - an astounding bass player, but also highly adept at writing & arranging for a big band and who is heavily influenced by those greatest practitioners of the art. Andy met to Nick van Gelder (the original Jamiroquai drummer) and keyboard guru Carl Hudson whilst doing a run of gigs backing artists like Leon Ware and Jean Carne. Andy played Nick You What! and he asked if he could lay a drum track down and at around the same time Carl offered his services on the record also. Nick went on to drum on the entire album and produce the recordings too.

At the tail end of 2011, when Freestyle Records A&R man Greg Boramans' compilation 'Sounds From The Soul Underground' was released the glorious noise of The Andy Tolman Cartel first came to public attention. The amazing track You What! had one foot in jazz-funk & the other in film & TV themes of the 60's and 70's, found champions in Jazz FM's Peter Young and BBC 6 Musics Craig Charles who both featured it on their radio shows heavily.

Andy himself takes up the story, "After You What! found it's way onto Gregs' compilation he asked me how many more tracks I had, I kind of lied (sorry Greg!) and said a whole albums worth. Having shot my mouth off I thought I had better set about delivering... a daunting prospect, and a promise I probably wouldn't have made had I been sober at the time. So I called upon the services of some of the amazing musicians I have worked with over the past few years. Move Over was the first song I heard Jo Harman sing and Stevie Watts award winning Hammond organ playing seemed like a natural fit too"

'Cypher' is indeed the perfect example of a natural fit of like minded musicians and their natural talents and the delightfully natural sound of a big band cutting loose that has not been heard for a long time making a welcome and long overdue return.

El Michels Affair - Shadow Boxing / Iron Maiden

Following up on the smashing success of El Michels Affair's Return To The 37th Chamber, EMA drops one more 45 for the collectors. The A side is the crushing cover of the Wu classic Shadowboxin' off GZA's cinematic masterpiece Liquid Swords. El Michels Affair takes the tune and makes it their own with dancing guitar licks, floating organ notes, and their signature heavy drums. The B side is a treat for the fans, a non album cut, they cover Ghostface's Iron Maiden', the tune that opened up and set the tone for his debut classic Ironman. El Michels smashes this one with a frantic off beat intro that drops into a heavy duty cover of the tune. The inimitable studio prowess of Michels is higlighted all over this track in the nuances and arrangements. Play it loud, and also smoke something and play it in your headphones. Itadi's music is unique, in his second album, he kept the same recipe: a mixture of soul, reggae, hi-life and Funk, with heavy lyrics which sounds like slogans and caused him big trouble after its release. He was obliged to escape the country to USA. A real definition of a revolutionary musician!

This deluxe LP contains also two unreleased tracks, interview, and photos and was fully licensed with his family.

Remastered by Frank Merritt at Carvery Studio.

Few funk groups have had as far-reaching an influence as New Orleans band The Meters, the project of keyboardist/vocalist Art Neville, and the famed house band of Allen Tousaint. During their mid-60s-to-late-70s heyday they released a heavy mixture of instrumental and vocal albums and singles of Louisiana-inflected soul, R&B, and funk music that continues to inspire and marvel, and get covered by groups and artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jaco Pastorius, Widespread Panic, and even The Grateful Dead. In 1969, The Meters released Look-Ka Py Py, which would cement their reputation in New Orleans music history as one of the greatest. Produced by Allen Toussaint himself, Look-Ka Py Py featured Art Neville and his sinuous keys leading the four-piece of George Porter Jr. on bass, Ziggy Modeliste on drums, and Leo Nocentelli on guitar 12 instrumental numbers of world-class funk, dripping with style and precision. Acclaimed to this day as a classic of the genre, The Rolling Stone gave the album a spot on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time, while songs from Look-Ka Py Py found new life decades after its release as a treasure trove of hip-hop sampling. (The title track alone has been sampled by Cypress Hill, DJ Shadow, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, 2 Live Crew, and even Kriss Kross, just to name a few.)

Eddie Russ - Take A Look At Yourself
  • 1: Take A Look At Yourself
  • 2: Don't Ask My Neighbors
  • 3: Tea Leaves
  • 4: Interlude
  • 5: I Want To Be Somebody
  • 6: Feelin' Fine
  • 7: I Heard That
  • 8: Lay Back

Keyboardist Eddie Russ hailed from Pittsburg and played with many of the greats including Sarah Vaughn, Benny Golson, Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie. Eddie is somewhat of an enigma, but he has always been held in high regard in the UK, and he finally was able to perform here in London at the Jazz café in the early 90's a few years before his untimely demise. His debut album 'Fresh Out' was recorded for the Jazz Masters label and includes the jazz dance classic 'The Lope Song', he also contributed heavily to Sonny Stitt's 'Tornado' album on that label. His band The Mixed Bag also made an album for the Detroit Tribe label. In 1976 he signed to John Richbourg's Sound Stage 7 label and made two great jazz funk albums which were released on the Nashville's Monument label and like his debut were produced by Bob Crawford. From the 1978 album 'Take A Look At Yourself' the title track is a monster percussive jazz funker on which Eddie's keyboards really shine through and Jackie Holiday's soulful vocals really top it off. She also does a great job of the Emotions 'Don't Ask My Neighbours', and Renee Coles adds her vocals to the infectious rare groove version of Quincy Jones 'I Heard That' . The Monument albums include some great musicians including on this album Motown's Eddie Willis, a very young Kenny Garrett and the funk group Quazar.

Keyboardist Eddie Russ hailed from Pittsburg and played with many of the greats including Sarah Vaughn, Benny Golson, Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie. In 1976 he signed to John Richbourg's Sound Stage 7 label and made two great jazz funk albums which were released on the Nashville's Monument label and like his debut were produced by Bob Crawford.

From this first album 'See The Light' the title track is a great take on the Earth Wind And Fire song, 'Poko Nose' is a great funky groove oriented track, but it is the magical 'Zaius' that has become an all time jazz funk classic, a track that has maintained its popularity over the past 40 years.

The Monument albums include some great musicians including Marcus Belgrave and Larry Nozero, and on the Take A Look At Yourself' album Motown's Eddie Willis, a very young Kenny Garrett and the funk group Quazar.
