Simply one of the greatest guitarists in jazz history, George Benson is an amazingly versatile musician, whose adept skills find him crossing easily between straight-ahead jazz, smooth jazz, and contemporary R&B. Blessed with supreme taste, a beautiful, rounded guitar tone, terrific speed, a marvelous sense of logic in building solos, and, always, an unquenchable urge to swing, Benson's inspirations may have been Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery, but his style is completely his own. Not only can he play lead brilliantly, he is also one of the best rhythm guitarists around, supportive to soloists and a dangerous swinger, particularly in a soul-jazz format. Yet Benson can also sing in a lush, soulful tenor with mannerisms similar to those of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, and it is his voice that has proven more marketable to the public than his guitar. Benson is the guitar-playing equivalent of Nat King Cole -- a fantastic pianist whose smooth way with a pop vocal eventually eclipsed his instrumental prowess in the marketplace -- but unlike Cole, Benson has been granted enough time after his fling with the pop charts to reaffirm his jazz guitar credentials, which he still does at his concerts.

In the wake of "This Masquerade," the balance of power shifted for the first time toward George Benson's suddenly marketable voice, four of the six tracks on In Flight are vocals. By this time, Benson was tailoring his tenor toward soulful pitch-bending à la Stevie Wonder on tunes as diverse as "Nature Boy" and "The World Is a Ghetto," and the unison scatting with the guitar that caught fire with the public on Masquerade is now pulled out whenever possible. Benson's backing band from Breezin', still set in its funk mode, is intact, and Claus Ogerman again contributes gentle orchestral cushions. She was the favorite singer of Johnny Cash and Aretha Franklin and 15 years before Angus Young and Frank Zappa, she already played the emblematic Gibson model SG.

Parallel to her studies that introduced her to jazz and classical vocal
styles, at home, Christine grew up listening to calypso, reggae, soul, rock and pop music. After graduating and moving to Germany in 2009, she founded and performed with musically diverse ensembles and has made solo performances on international television programs, in stadiums and arenas
across the country. Her most current band, Seraleez was founded in 2010 celebrating Future Soul (a fusion of Soul, Hip Hop and Jazz).

The first instalment in our new 'Mr Bongo Record Club' compilation series - a selection of favourites, recent discoveries and sought after obscurities, which form the basis of our DJ sets and our radio show of the same name. Including cuts by Claudia, Cortex, Dave Pike Set, Fruko, Neno Exporta Som, Connie Laverne, Barbosa and more. The original concept for 'Mr Bongo Record Club' was a radio show that allowed us to air our treasured record collections, recorded and broadcast once a
month. We wanted to create an outlet free from any genre or BPM restrictions, not constrained by the need to beat-mix every record, a space where we could play latest finds alongside favourites. The only self-imposed rule being that it had to be played from vinyl. We have always DJ'd across-the-board, but playing in an eclectic way hasn't always been easy. Recently DJ's such as MCDE, Floating Points, Nick The Record, Leon Vynehall, Four Tet, Jeremy Underground, Antal (Rush Hour), Sassy J and Young Marco - to name a few - have opened things up with very diverse sets to younger audiences; Brazilian samba-rock, next to modern soul, highlife, disco, boogie, jazz, house, techno and beyond.   We're seeing a rare groove like sensibility. A shift towards the attitude of legendary club nights hosted by the likes of Mr Scruff and Gilles Peterson, where you could hear house, hip hop, Turkish funk, boogie, jazz, dub and Latin back to back. At the same time it isn't a nostalgic or retro movement, people have a progressive attitude and a thirst for new-old music. It is a vibrant and exciting time - we are proud to be a part of it.

Music and boxing have always gone hand in... glove. Whether on stage or on screen, a strong tune has always been an essential part of the gladiatorial experience and over the years, boxers, promoters and film directors have taken great care in selecting songs to inspire and intimidate.

Now, on the eve of World Heavyweight Champ Anthony Joshua's fight against anticipated opponent Wladimir Klitschko, comes a unique album The Greatest...Best Boxing Ringwalk Songs.

This 2CD set, the first of its kind, contains the most memorable songs - and one legendary poem - from the ring.

Both classic and contemporary fighters are celebrated: first up, The Greatest himself, Muhammad Ali, whose legendary poem, recited before Ali's rematch with Smokin' Joe Frazier, was first aired 45 years ago on the Michael Parkinson show (Oct 17th, 1971). Heavyweight hard man Mike Tyson used Cypress Hill's 'How I Could Just Kill a Man' as one of his ominous signatures, British superstar Lennox Lewis loved the music of James Brown and favoured classic slo-funk cuts such as 'The Payback' and 'The Boss'. '80s anthem 'Simply the Best' by Tina Turner is synonymous with Chris Eubank.

More recent stars are celebrated including British heavyweight hero Anthony Joshua MBE, who had his friend and leading grime star Stormzy perform a bespoke version of his song 'Shut Up' before AJ's clash with Dillian Whyte in 2015. The track, a b-side, entered the Top 10 the next week as a result of the fight's huge impact. We may see this repeated on 26th November ...

Tyson Fury, ex WBO, WBA, IBO, IBF Heavyweight and Ring Magazine Heavyweight World Champion - who is set to star in the new series of 'I'm A Celebrity', walked on to the Randy Travis cut 'I'm Gonna Have a Little Talk (with Jesus)'. Johnny Keating's 'Theme From Z Cars' is Tony Bellew's go-to song (also popular with his home team Everton FC). The classic 'Rock and Roll Star' by Oasis was used by fellow Manc and ex WBA Super Bantamweight Champion Scott Quigg. Ricky Hatton and David Haye, perhaps the two most famous British boxers of the last decade, are also checked, with Supra's 'Blue Moon' (Hatton) and McFadden & Whitehead's pop-soul smash 'Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now' (Haye).

2016 marks the 40th anniversary of the first Rocky movie, a film that contains possibly the most famous theme tune of them all, 'Gonna Fly Now' by Bill Conti. That song, with its triumphant horns and strangely soulful melody is etched into the memory of a generation. For some, it proved an inspiration. World middleweight champion Tony Bellew joined the dots between real life and Hollywood when he starred in the latest Rocky film, 'Creed' in 2015. I grew up on the Rocky soundtrack,' says Bellew, who played baddy 'Pretty' Ricky Conlan, I loved it. I didn't know anyone who didn't love it. Whenever I watch any of the films, I think to myself, I'm a Rocky bad guy now. I'm one of them. So, really, the Rocky music has defined my life, my life as a boy, and my life as a man.' The Fruit Band's fleeting existence was only recently revealed by the discovery of a few unsold copies of their sole 1978 7" single, Say It, which quickly became a cult showpiece for savvy DJs and collectors, now we finish that untold story with the LP this 12" and a soon to be released 45.Support from Gilles and tons of other in the know Djs, this is a one time deal, so dont sleep.

TK Disco come up trumps yet again with 2 absolutely solid, killer pieces of Disco Funk for the heads!
The Miami label has long had a cult following & found fame with Disco aficionado's the world over & it's easy to see why. Their back catalog is peppered with rarities & classics including the 2 cuts featured here.

Taking up the A-side is the super rare "Moon Ride" from obscure group Universal Love, an epic, storming slice of get-down Disco Soul, a real burner of a track.. drenched in Jazzy vibes & deep harmonies laced in soaring synth swells & strings, underground Disco at it's best & a real tough to catch on original 12" with copies fetching collectors prices on-line!

Over on the B-side we have the Mad Dog Fire Department's appropriately named "Cosmic Funk", a track that has shown up in the playlists of everyone from David Mancuso to Daniele Baldelli & beyond! A stomping, grooving jam laced with the FUNK. Serious business indeed, & both tracks are now available on one 12"!

Curious and unable to locate any master tapes, it took a younger generation of Le'Trell boys to breath life back into the grooves and deliver an modern update to that which never was. After 14 years of close collaboration Tony Allen stopped working with Fela Anikulapo Kuti. After breaking from the band during the gigs at Berlin's festival in 1978, Tony Allen returned to Lagos to start working on new compositions. His independence inspired him to break-away from his regular routine of putting 2 tracks on every single album. The tracks on No Discrimination are also focussed more towards subjects of tolerance, brotherhood and peace. This was his final work during the 70's, after which he started to move beyond the border of Nigeria by collaborating with artists worldwide. Moreno, Kassin and Domenico were childhood friends from school. They formed a band and made three albums, each one under a different one's name. Their records are different and very influential in Brazil. Morneo is the son of legendary Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso. You can hear him at age 8 on the first Luaka Bop release ( Beleza Tropical') singing the words Ilê Ayê' on Caetano's song of the same name.

Moreno's record is to some extent the most conventional of the three, even though Domenico, the drummer, plays drums on a sampler and cymbal sounds using sand paper. The next release, Domenico's, had the greatest success in the indie world, while Kassin's album is the most produced (which makes sense as he has become one of the most successful producers in Brazil).

Assagai's debut for Philips' progressive subsidiary Vertigo was realised in 1971 to quiet applause. Critics soon became favourable as Afro-Rock gained a foothold as the 'next big thing' and it wasn't long before they would make their (only) appearance on Top of The Pops.Their journey in London's predominantly progressive underground music scene was brief, but also established a further chapter in the annals of afro-rock alongside Black Velvet, Osibisa, Thors Anvil, Uhuru and the Cosmic Grass Band. Numerous musical figures were assembled from the South African and Nigerian communities resident in London at the time with contributions from Dudu Pukwana, Fred Coker, Ayinde Folarin (Demon Fuzz) and Fred Fredericks (Jimmy James and The Vagabonds). An unlikely partnership with progressive-folk legends Jade Warrior would provide backing on their Zimbabwe LP, co-writing material for their self-titled debut. Unbeknown to Jade Warrior at the time, they were part of a combined contract with their labelmates.Assagai is as fresh and alive as it was when it was recorded in 1971, hypnotic in it's rhythm and tantalising in its mix of punctured brass and provocative vocals. Their ruthless brand of handsome rhythm offers copious potent vibes, but simultaneously employs a simple narrative achieving an elementary perspective of London's rapidly changing times.
