Ted Coleman Band - Taking Care Of Business

We're delighted to announce the reissue as this ultra-rare LP, originally issued on JSR Records back in 1980. Heavily influenced by the likes of Bobby Hutcherson and Roy Ayers, 'Taking Care Of Business' is full of positive, uptempo soul/jazz gems, featuring Ted Coleman's wonderful vibraphone playing throughout. Not only did Coleman both sing and play piano, synth and vibes on the record, but he also designed the artwork himself, a true DIY LP if ever there was one. This DIY ethos even extended to the New Jersey label JSR who originally pressed the LP, describing themselves as: "a new company that helps working club bands that can sell their own records. JSR artists spend no money for recording or production costs, and there are no recording contracts." This could well explain the album's rarity, with original copies selling on Discogs for eye-wateringly high prices.
Ted Coleman cut his teeth playing local clubs and venues in his hometown of Pittsburgh, where his skills on vibes and mallet percussion quickly earned him popularity in the local area. 'Taking Care Of Business' was his very first studio album, blending latin rhythms with smooth jazz and soul stylings. The musicianship on the record is striking, the vocals mellow and soulful, the lyrics warm and
tender: put simply this album is designed to warm the heart. Still writing and recording at 'Joyful Noise', his Metuchen New Jersey studio, Ted Coleman also performs across the US with his "Good Vibes" band. We hope you find as much joy in this scarce and remarkable debut LP as we do.

The Inciters - Baby, I Love You

THE INCITERS play Northern Soul music. Northern Soul takes the Motown/Stax ethic but adds a stronger back-beat with more adventurous production, and THE INCITERS continue this tradition in grand style. With 11 members wielding drums, bass, guitars, a full horn section, and three female vocalists, THE INCITERS have no problem filling a room with the powerful sound of soul. The three vocalists lead the band through finely crafted original songs as well as traditional soul music that will get you out of your seat and start to dance. THE INCITERS first formed back in 1995 and had a successful 10-year run before breaking up in 2005 - leaving behind a massive following in Europe that demanded their return year after year. In 2009, they got their wish as original member / bandleader Rick Kendrick went to work putting the band back together. THE INCITERS re-formed with some new, younger faces and picked up right where they left off. Right after the group reformed, they embarked on another successful European tour, released a teaser 7' single on Scorcha in Germany, and then got to work to record their comeback album SOUL CLAP!

Dubplate
25.07.2016

The next instalment in the Dubplate series sees our very own Scrimshire step up to the plate for the fifth time!

Having gained huge amounts of radio play for his own productions, as well as the occasional cheeky re-edit, Scrimshire brings us two firing reworks of a couple of musical rarities covering latin, soul and disco angles.

His re-work of the 1975 Brazilian obscurity Tatarue by Giovana aims both barrels firmly at the dancefloor, while his extended edit of the Morris Wilson's version of Rappers Delight, entitled Bebopper's Delight, thankfully extends the original's 1'35" length with some typically Scrimshire twists and turns along the way.

Once again, we hope you enjoy!

"Big Boy Pete" was also a big single and a huge influence on pacific northwest garage rock group, The Kingsmen. Included here are many of those classic early singles, with bonus tracks, on 180 gram vinyl with a download code.

Alex Puddu - The Golden Age Of Danish Pornography, Vol. 1

The music on this record is inspired by and composed for The Golden Age of Danish Pornography - a collection of vintage hardcore short films from the early seventies, directed by Danish porn pioneer Freddy Weiss - available on DVD from Pink Flamingo Entertainment.

After a show at Copenhagen Jazzhouse with my band, Alex Puddu and The Butterfly Collectors, I came to meet an old face from the underground music business, Jan Schmidt, who I knew but not as much as I came to know in later years. He used to own a few brilliant indie labels such as Pingo, Cloudland and April Records, back when some of the coolest bands from the Danish indie scene were around. I recall that after that gig, Jan and I had a hell of a lot to share with each other: Food, music, Italian giallo and horror movies from the 60s and the 70s. In fact, just about everything!

Later that year I was signed to do 2 albums with Alex Puddu and The Butterfly Collectors, 'Chasing the Scorpion's Tail' followed by 'The Silcence of the Sun and The Rhythm of the Rain', by April Records, and even if the records did not sell so well we had a wonderful time recording them and we built up a great relationship between us.
I must admit that my music tastes have always been affected by the visions and the movies that I saw back in the days when I was a teenager growing up in Italy to the Dario Argento score of 'Profondo Rosso' or 'The Warriors'.

I probably got much more into it with time and at that point I just had to do something about it, and that is when I started to record my first solo albums after the break-up with Puddu Varano under the pseudonym of Alex Puddu and the Butterfly Collectors. This was very cinematically inspired and believe it or not I have always known from the start how to compose and produce a track from the very beginning to the very end with a perfect vision and artwork. Last year Jan told me that he was going to release some vintage collection Danish porn films on DVD and he needed to have some music done. I immediately thought of myself and believed that I was that right person for the job. I knew this was going to be something special for me.

Creating a score for a vintage porn movie has been my dream for many years and the thought that I was going to write and perform something original for those pictures made me really happy and proud, especially after so many years of waiting. I remembered when I used to go out and rent old vintage porno movies at the local video store because I just appreciated the old soundtracks so much. Can you believe that now it was going to be my turn Well, it took me a couple of months of writing and producing for the soundtracks and I wrote the whole score and most of the tracks while sitting on the couch in my living room with a glass of red wine and a funky bass line. And do you know what I am a pretty cool bass player when it comes to porno music, do you know what I mean.

Some of the songs like 'Naughty Girls at the Wild Party' or 'Black Triangle' are built up from cool and freaky fuzz guitar riffs and I also have to say that beats production is awesome. This was easy for me since I have been a drummer for many years and I just love this king of music so I did not have any trouble in the recording session and I got exactly what I wanted! But you can not forget that this album would not have been possible without the help of some of my wonderful music 'mates'... continues ...

X*nouvelle Vague - Xi Could Be Happy

  • 3: I Wanna Be Sedated
  • 4: I Could Be Happy
  • 5: All Cats Are Grey
  • 6: No One Is Receiving
  • 7: Maladroit
  • 8: Algo Familiar
  • 9: Loneliness
  • 10: La Pluie Et Le Beau Temps

Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague = New Wave.
This transliteration was the starting point for Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux's unique project, which, by appropriating the punk and post-punk cannon and running it through the Bossa Nova filter, reinvented the cover band genre, revealing new and brilliant talents along the way: Camille, Phoebe Killdeer (whose Fade Out Lines was remixed by The Avener,) Nadeah, Mélanie Pain, and, soon, Liset Alea. The gambit paid off, with sales of over one million records over four albums released between 2004 and 2010, and world tours that included stops at venues such as London's Royal Albert Hall, L.A.'s Hollywood Bowl and Paris' Olympia. Since 2011, Nouvelle Vague had stopped recording, focusing on an innovative live show created in collaboration with the mythical Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (Ceremony and Dawn of innocence,) and branching out into different projects: Olivier's Uncovered Queen of the Stone Age, and Marc's Bristol, along with his Kwaidan label. The time seems right to write a new chapter in the Nouvelle Vague saga: with a new album I Could Be Happy' and live show, the band and its coterie of female vocalists continue their time travels with a renewed alegria. Nouvelle vague by Nouvelle Vague and Some Friends is thus more of a nexus of forthcoming projects: a new album comprised of punk and post punk standards imbued with the inimitable Nouvelle Vague touch, and, for the first time, a bevy of surprising Collin/Libaux which prove that the two producers are more than prodigious arrangers. This album is also the opportunity to gather again the pioneer singers of Nouvelle Vague: Élodie Frégé, Mélanie Pain, Liset Alea, Nadeah and to find other guests as Camille or Clara Luciani. A worldwide tour is already confirmed and announced. It will begin in Europe and Asia, in the fall, and will continue through South America and the U.S.A. in the new year, and feature the entire crew on stage, around Marc and Olivier: Mélanie Pain, Élodie Frégé, and Liset Alea.

79.5 - Terrorize My Heart (pt.1 & 2)

Big Crown is proud to present the debut single from 79.5 Terrorize My Heart'. Hard to categorize, easy to love, 79.5 has been making tons of noise around New York City for the past year. With three lead vocalists, Kate, Nya, and Piya and a band that pulls influence from every corner of a record store, it's no wonder they are already taking the scene by storm. They are an act that gets put on as an opener and shortly there after is asked by the venue to do a month long residency. That residency leads them to a full page write up in The New Yorker before they even have a single out. The long and short of it is that 79.5 wins over the listeners wherever they play with an infectious energy. Between the arrangements of bandleader Kate Mattison and the prowess of all the players, their sets run a gamut of energies and tempos, whether breaking it down to a capella, turning it up to disco, or mastering the middle, they run the groove, and the crowd follows suit. Take all of that and put it in the studio with Big Crown's own Leon Michels on production duties and you get a record we can't wait to put out in the world, a record on which every song was recorded live to tape in one take. Terrorize My Heart', a tune leaving no room for gray, finds the ladies of 79.5 walking the line between vulnerability and forthrightness. Setting out with admonishments of love and infatuation that are checked by the bluntness of women who've lived in the Big Apple for years, is it her or is it me, that's how it's gotta be'. A smashing rhythm section covered in punching rhodes chops, flute parts, and dubbed out reggae rhythm guitar sets the perfect vibe for the ladies to trade off leads and come back together in three part harmonies: All the while taking the whole tune from half time to double time. The B side, coined the Disco Dub mixed by Jens Jungkurth, finds Michels' production taking Terrorize My Heart' from the change where it goes to four on the floor and lacing it with drums and a clap track that absolutely pushes this tune over the edge into the realm of dancefloor banger. Tombstones fall over, the earth cracks open, and dead people get up and dance when this comes on... Another Big Crown Sureshot.

Lady Wray - Smiling/make Me Over
  • A1: Smiling
  • B1: Make Me Over

Big Crown Records is proud to present the second single from Lady Wray's Queen Alone album Smiling'. An instant feel good anthem, Smiling finds Lady Wray reminding us to keep our heads up and keep a smile on our faces through whatever life deals us. With production from Leon Michels & Thomas Brenneck that rides the line between bubblegum pop and lo fi tough grit, Nicole lays out with a voice as encouraging as the lyrics she is singing. Listeners will be hard pressed not to find themselves singing along after the first listen. A proper good vibe tune guaranteed to move dance floors the world over. The B side Make Me Over' is a lushly scored tale of letting your guard down and letting the one who loves you take care of you when you are down and out. A relatable tale of having expensive taste and empty pockets, Nicole finds herself asking for a little help so she can get a break from being strapped for cash promising to take care of her man as soon as her check comes in.

Whilst not the first UK dance scene - the mods had that covered - northern soul is the longest running. Those northern clubbers who eschewed late 60s psychedelic fripperies for obscure old soul records with the requisite beat, couldn't have known what they started. After using up all the UK released sides they began digging in the United States and after nearly 50 years the northern soul scene has probably unearthed more great music than any other.

Various - Can You Feel That Beat: Funk 45s And Other Rare Grooves

Funk was the syncopated groove that emerged in the mid-sixties through hits from James Brown and Dyke and The Blazers. It was a natural development out of rhythm and blues. Thousands of local bands tried to emulate Brown's success, and in the process created a plethora of rare and sought after 45s and album cuts that have been mined by DJs and producers to fill floors or provide breakbeats. Whilst the 20 tracks on this compilation would cost you thousands of pounds to own on their original issue, that isn't really the point. Instead you get to listen to magnificent grooves such as Mickey & The Soul Generations explosive 'Iron Leg', Andrew Brown's blues tinged 'You Made Me Suffer' or the message music of 24 Carat Black.

Various - Extra Added Soul: Cross Over, Modern And Funky Soul

There is a lot of confusion with regards to the modern soul scene. An off-shoot of northern soul, it initially mixed new release independent soul, with post late-60s soul that didn't fit with the northern scene. They championed a lot of great records, but this was the mid-80s and it now seems odd to describe nearly 50 year old records as modern soul - but somehow the name has stuck. Extra Added Soul luxuriates in this contradiction, as it allows us to mix up the boogie like 'Love Explosion' by Donnell Pittman, with two-step Chicago classics by Elvin Bishop or El Anthony, or the danceable sweet soul of Dyson's Faces with Gil Scott-Heron alike 'Patience' by Rokk. Amongst the twenty tracks there is also room for a touch of Prince on 94 East's exceptional 'If You See Me' and the cosmic soul of Karriem's super rarity 'I Love You'.On the 14th October 2016 J&D Records release three exceptional compilations that look at vintage African-American music through the prism of UK club culture.

70s African Nuggets and Garage Rock From Nigeria, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Download Card Included. Globetrotter of parallel subcontinents and digger of rare, forgotten records, Eothen Egon' Alapatt tracks sounds from the dawn of time to the four corners of the world. On the other side of the globe, French designer Christophe Lemaire stays forward thinking and audacious in his choices: far from our deified present, he cultivates a love of timeless designs and mixed influences, a passion for iconoclastic music hidden in the dark corners of a global cultural industry. This extraordinary openness has been at the heart of their friendship since 2007. Their exceedingly eclectic, fierce rock discoveries gave birth to a first anthology, Where Are You From (Now-Again, 2010), the fruit of Lemaire's excavating Alapatt's archives. That was a postgeographic exploration in psych, rock and funk territories from 1968 to now, this second anthology celebrates their impressionist vision and explores garage rock from the 1970s, voicing the struggles of independence in Zambia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. Can't You Hear Me comes from a track by charismatic Zamrock icon Paul Ngozi, a Lemaire favorite. Ngozi's title track sets the tone for a drastic selection of seventeen songs with rebellious undertones, riddled by an infectious groove, the forsaken writing about a forgotten chapter in the history of music. Ngozi, WITCH, Chrissy Zebby Tembo, Amanaz, Wells Fargo, Eye Q and the Funkees represent a generation fighting for their freedom, armed with fuzz guitars, symbolic objects of a new movement. They played in Fela's kingly shadow, were influenced by Hendrix's psychedelic solos, Jefferson Airplane's penetrating chords and Cream's repetitive melodies. The music of their colonial oppressors they reassembled and reinterpreted with pure energy, without nod to hymn or flag. A halo of cosmic design and pure lines, the cover for the anthology by Sanghon Kim transports us in this whirling odyssey in space and time while composer/producer Pilooski concludes the album with an edit of WITCH's No Time,' an expression of the critical need to open up to new perspectives, new imaginations and to keep unearthing riches of our universal heritage. Through these tracks we can feel the communicative energy, this pure vitality, not only of Africa , but of youth and hope,' Lemaire states. And I find it quite universal and timeless. It is not about music as an industry , or as product , but music as a craft . And one can immediately recognized when music is created with heart and soul.'

Rim Kwaku Obeng & The Believers - Rim Arrives / International Funk

We're very proud to present here the first of two legendary 'lost' albums both previously available only as rare-as-hen's teeth private presses, from one Samuel K. Mfojo, the man known as Rim Kwaku Obeng. As well as heralding the arrival as solo artist of an exciting new drummer, the title of his 1977 debut, Rim Arrives, also makes reference to the long struggle Kwaku had in getting to that point. To say that he 'paid his dues' is an understate-ment!
A member of one of Ghana's most popular bands, the Uhuru Dance Band, during a period when 'every song was a hit', the recording studios of LA were even more alluring to an aspirant musician, and he followed his bandmate, Duke Oketa, there for a session in 1973. Despite having hired a massive string section, Oketa failed to provide charts for the session,
and it was postponed for a week, with Kwaku being asked to write them instead. He turned it around, pocketed $700, and won the admiration of Quincy Jones who was hanging out at A&M's studios and asked Kwaku to join him ... only to back off when Oketa intervened, threatening a lawsuit if Kwaku walked.
That scuppered opportunity was as nothing compared to the disaster that next befell him: having flown to London with Duke's band, to record with 'a band called Traffic' and a young singer-songwriter called Joan Armatrading, Kwaku found himself marooned in the city without money, documentation or friends. Oketa had checked out of their hotel the first night, and had Kwaku's passport and luggage with him. Despite the sympathy of the hotel staff, he found himself on the streets, and thus in 1973 began a six-month period as a homeless, destitute, undocumented stranger. That Kwaku by chance managed to meet Armatrading, who helped him get his life back on track, by chance passing Ronnie Scott's where she was playing, was an even more unlikely twist in the fate of this promising young musician. He never found out why Oketa had abandoned him, but he fulfilled his promise, recording Rim Arrives in San Francisco in 1977.
That year was the zenith of disco, and pretty much anybody who entered a recording studio that year cut a disco record. Rim was no exception, his Ghanaian rhythms tailor-made for the percussive energy that was fuelling the clubs of the day. With a mixture of hot LA session musicians and African emigrés, he cut an album that very much captures the spirit of its time. As well as kit drums, conga and an array of percussive instruments, the multi-talented bandleader also played piano and clavinet on the sessions. Throw in some tight horn riffs, Fela-style call and response vocals, and you have an album that fits the current mania for both vintage African music and ever-more obscure disco perfectly. Cuts like Brushing Means Making Love, Gas Line and Believe In Yourself and have been tearing up dancefloors in the hands of specialist DJs for some time: now it's time for the rest of the
world to catch up.
Also included is International Funk, a very in-demand 12' he recorded later as Rim and The Believers, with drum machines and synths in full 1980s effect!
Serious Afro-disco heat here, with the originals fetching silly money, these records were overlooked at the time, with the glut of amazing music that characterized the era, but, nearly four decades on, it's fair to say that, Rim really has arrived!

Them Two - Am I Am Good Man
  • A1: Am I A Good Man
  • B1: Love Has Taken Wings

A sinewy guitar, a throbbing bass, and a chorus of haunting females oohs... Eccentric Soul: The Deep City Label started with one unrelenting pleader of a track: Them Two's Am I A Good Man.' Since its 2006 re-release, Am I A Good Man' has appeared in dozens of films and television shows and has been sampled by the likes of Ghostface Killah and 50 Cent. Ten years later, this deep soul classic from Miami returns to its original format with it's long-vaulted B-side Love Has Taken Wings' on the reverse. Both songs were co-written by Clarence Blowfly' Reid and produced by Liberty City wunderkinds Johnny Pearsall and Willie Clarke.

Dennis Bovell - Heaven

At last! This one took literally years to piece together. Does Dennis Bovell need an introduction I think not but in case you don't know, he is a musical polymath, top flight producer, dub legend and one of the finest artists the UK has ever produced.

Optimo Music has worked with Dennis before when he went into Green Door studios and dubbed out Golden Teacher to the max. This Disco Plate EP was already in the works before then but various circumstances caused it to take until now to see the light of day.

In 1981 Dennis released his solo album, "Brain Damage". A double album that fused afro beat, funk, dub, jazz, blues and styles that have still to be genre-fied, it went over most people's heads and is now a mainly forgotten masterpiece.

From that album we present on the A side, the magnificent "Heaven", a disco dub afro-sound dance floor bomb that somehow manages to sound more current today than it did 35 years ago. Also included is a slightly edited version that removes some of the vocals to focus on the groove a little more.

On the AA side is the legendary "Escape Goat Dub". Back in 1981, Dennis Bovell was perhaps thee hot producer of the day. Epic Records put Dennis in the studio with singer songwriter Garland Jeffreys to work on his new album. It turned out Mr. Jeffreys was a big dub fan so most of the studio time was spent doing wild dub tracks instead of the singer song writer type tracks the label was anticipating. The wildest of those was "Escape Goat Dub" which must be up there in the greatest dubs ever to shake the world. The label was patently at a loss as to what to do with it so stuck it out as a promo only 12" in France, and there it lay forgotten. After a long search Twitch picked up a copy in Rennes a few years back and got permission from Mr. Bovell and Mr. Jeffreys to put it out again. It's not an expensive record or a mega rare record, just little known and definitely deserving to be heard by new ears. Epic dub abounds.

The AA2 is "Smouche", another track from "Brain Damage"; 3 minutes of dub, funk inflected Moogy summery joy.

Next up on Nang we are pleased to bring a really positive 3 year association with West Country, UK based collective Situation to a fruitful crescendo. After 4 singles, numerous remixes and a couple of Beach Disco mixes we are extremely proud to present the sister release "Revisions" to the debut album from Situation "Visions". This vinyl release features the remix highlights of the Situation album and some brand new exclusive remixes to boot.

Situation is live, DJ and studio collective made up of the core members Ben Vacara, Mr Mulatto, Dom Thompson, James Payne & Paul Walker, with Vocalists Lauren Rimell & Andre Espeut(Defected & Fools gold records). The crew got together in 2008 through a shared love of house, disco, funk & soul music. Based in & around Stroud & Bristol in the UK, the crew released their first Edit based single on Disco Deviance with huge support from DJ's including Greg Wilson, who featured their edits on a Radio One essential mix & Resident Advisor mixes. Their Edit "Pushin' On" which was a rework of an Alice Russel/Quantic track got snapped up by Tru Thoughts & released as an official remix. They then formed their own "Situation" label in 2009 with a string of successful edits, establishing themselves strongly within the worldwide edit scene, which they still continue with. They have now gone on to write more & more original compositions (as well as edits) & so in 2012 formed their new label "Situationism" which concentrates on original compositions & compilations from themselves & other established & up & coming artists.

Proceedings open up with the big nu-disco grooves of "Get To Know Me" with UK based Hot Toddy on the remix. Driving bass guitar and bags of dance floor sass. Next is the hypnotic oscillating groove of "Barcelona" with Psychemagik working their synth big room groove. Keeping the remix groove high and UK based next up is Wolverhampton based Peza with his pulsating synth bass lines working themselves into "Standing Here Baby".

Next up on side B is some ubercool Nordic Russian beats with 5 Reasons on the melodic and sweeping remix of "Stay With Me". "Secret Situation" gets a big room dance re-rub from Pete Herbert next before South American Phunktastike takes on "Stay With Me" with big room aplomb. The grooves are bold, strong and incessant. Sportloto put their Russian spin on "Here Comes The Sun" adding layers of leftfield synth quirk to the jazzy guitar and lazy summer vocal.

Vampire Disco strip back the beats on "Standing Here Baby" turning in an offbeat twister. Next up UK based French man Jerry Bouthier teams up with Italian studio partner Andrea Gorgenio to deliver the pop house groove of "Like A Medicine". Bitter Suite turn in their remix of "Visions" with their 80s funk inspired Bitter Suite Re-rub.

"Good Life" receives a slo-mo synth strip down from Siberian based Acos Coolkas. Their trademark Rhodes and bleepy synth taking a centre stage appearance. To round things off "Work It Trough" gets an album closing stripped down night-time remix.

The Situation "Revisions" remixed version is also released with its sister album "Visions" which features the original versions of all these fine remixed tracks.

Billy Hawks - O'baby! Four Track Limited Edition Ep

A native of Richmond, Virginia, Billy Hawks was based in Philadelphia and worked with his trio up and down the Eastern seaboard. He was discovered playing in one of the area's many clubs and lounges and recorded his first album, The New Genius Of The Blues', for Prestige in 1966. Heavy Soul!', an organ-heavy mod R&B masterpiece, followed a year later. Produced by Cal Lampley at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, Heavy Soul!' included the latter-day London club favourite 'O'Baby (I Believe I'm Losing You)', the lead track on this latest release in our limited edition 7-inch EP range. Beautifully packaged in the classic London American style, the cover features the only known photographs of Billy, provided by his brother Leroy, a singer in his own right who recorded two rare 45s for Philly labels. Introduced to the UK's jazz scene by Baz Fe Jazz and Gilles Peterson in the mid-1980s, 'O'Baby' become a staple of the more discerning clubs, a clarion call to the dancefloor. Unfortunately, Billy died in the early 80s, a little too early to enjoy the album's rediscovery.

Fort Knox Five Feat. Joe Quarterman - Donlt Go / Instrumental
  • A1: Don't Go
  • B1: Instrumental

Washington, DC native Joe Quarterman had his first hit in 1973, an instant funk classic that was part of the capital city's red hot 70s funk scene. So Much Trouble On My Mind' is a party rocking anthem still being sampled and played over 40 years later. Fort Knox Five recently got Quarterman back in the studio to record a new song, the stripped down funk banger Don't Go.'
Over the past 13 years Fort Knox Five have been producing original funk music in Washington , DC , giving credit to DC legends like Joe Quarterman and Chuck Brown. Through the DC Funk Parade festival the two artists were linked up, a fusion years in the making. Having worked with legends like Afrika Bambaataa and others, Fort Knox Five are deeply honored to be working with Sir Joe Quarterman.
The result of this collaboration is a modern funk anthem that will put the glide in your stride, just as long as you Don't Go'! Quarterman drops in with a classic funk delivery, complete with James Brown vocal stylings. He really belts it out, saying This funk will set you free, this funk is as good as can be.' Sir Joe's upbeat flow is perfect for the dance floor sensibilities of Fort Knox Five, who incorporated their own live elements into the mix. Pulling out all the stops, FK5's own Steve Raskin is on live bass, Rob Myer drops some seriously funky wah-wah guitars and incorporates a full horn section, complete with DC's own Frank Mitchell, Jr. on saxophone.
Spanning time and generations of music, this tune captures the vibe of DC's classic funk sound and merges it with the future funk sensibilities of Fort Knox Five. Inspired by the DC Funk Parade, this song is being released to commemorate the third annual parade this year. A slice of DC through and through, combining styles and influences across the decades, Don't Go' is sure to get your hands clapping and your booty shaking!

Effi Duke & The Love Family - Mr. Love

Nigeria had a unique music scene which began spreading rapidly in the 1970s. The era was based on unspoiled use of fuzz pedal, keyboards and indisputable influences of the Psychedelic Blues bands of the West. In 1980 Effi Duke & The Love Family came out with their debut Mr. Love. It was released by Homzy Records which was a home of many Afro-Funk records, going strong from mid '70s toward '80s. Effi Duke & The Love Family being one of their most energetic albums. The '80s were definitely more into a jazzy sound with disco slowly infiltrating the African music scene. What's so unique about Mr. Love is Effi Duke's love for guitar based Jazz and together with African rhythms and funky bass, his album is a Funk/Jazz/Disco hybrid. He's an incredible guitarist and also at the time of this LP an ex-Wings member. They were one of the most popular bands from Nigeria. Effi Duke was a key part of the scene with being member of The Wings, The Visitors, The Apostles, he played also the guitars on Mary Afi Usuah's fantastic second LP African Woman (which will be also rereleased on PMG) and on many other great albums including the incredible Folk 77 album.

Expansive synth the perfect tone setter for the album to come. Next up "Work Through It" gives us the first taste of the soulful vocals of Andre Espeut. His smooth tones sit effortlessly over the stomping grooves, house pianos and brass stabs.Situation first came to our attention when we heard their "Barcelona" track in 2012. We were blown away with its Balearic grooves and signed it as their debut single with us. This track is next on the track list sounding as fresh as ever.Get To Know" features a catchy vocal top-line, jazzy Rhodes and locked-on synth bass melded in perfect unison. "Here Comes The Sun" does exactly what it says on the tin with its sun drenched grooves, summertime Rhodes and lazy guitar. "Standing Here Baby" has Andre back on the soulful vocals this time over a walking synth bass and burbling synth swells. Title track "Visions" takes things on a housier, dancefloor excursion.Next up is a cover of the Inner City classic "Good Life". The Situation re-rub features the stabby synth of the original but adds layers of new dimension with its driving analog saw tooth bass synth and dancefloor sensibility. "Stay With Me" takes things on a jazzier detour whilst we lean towards the 80s with the big synth and snare fills of "Secret Situation Part 3". Things close off with the perfect closing nightcap of the evening vibe grooves and soaring vocals of Lauren Rimell. The Situation album also comes with its sister companion release "Revisions" which features the remix highlights of the album tracks and some brand new ones commissioned specially for the 2 X LP vinyl release.

The Whole Truth - Two Fools (feat. Earl 16)

The Whole Truth follows up this year's Balearic disco hit 'Stalemate' with a return to his speciality: dubbed-out boogie with a soulful strut.

'Two Fools' features vocals from Earl 16, one of the UK's finest reggae singers. Though best known on these shores for his appearance on Leftfield's 'Release The Pressure', Earl has credits with Joe Gibbs, Augustus Pablo, and, err, Rudimental, among many others over his four decades in the business. One of the finest soul voices in the country, he gives this story of a treacherous lover a Motown-meets-Jamtown feel. Meanwhile The Whole Truth is straddling the Atlantic - one foot in New York and one in London - as he serves up another slab of analogue boogie perfection. There's an instrumental dub on the flip for the purists.

With BBC Radio 1 (Monki) and 6 Music (Nemone) both waking up to The Whole Truth's unique charms, these 7"s may not stick around long. You'd be a fool to wait around.

Antonio Carlos E Jocafi - Mudei De Ideia

A truly fantastic record that sounds the way it looks - psychedelic rock, samba-funk and tripped out MPB.
Features 'Kabaluerê' as sampled by Marcelo D2 on his hit 'Qual e'. Arranged by Rogerio Duprat, featuring legendary guitarist Lanny Gordin. Antonio Carlos & Jocafi were a very successful and famous Brazilian writing duo, born in Bahia. They worked with the likes of Wilson Simonal, Rosinha De Valença, Trio Mocotó, Milton Banana, Toquinho and more. Originally released on RCA Brazil in 1971, this was the duo's debut LP. Two versions of the album cover exist in Brazil - this, the psyched-out, burnt out version, and a much less exciting photograph of the chaps, pressed to
include the single 'Desacato' which became a popular hit in Brazil and several European countries. Available on vinyl LP and CD. Original master, supplied by Sony/RCA. Artwork restored by Andy Edwards.
